Postcards from Paris
Parisian Apartment Home Tour
1970s yves saint laurent meets the row..
Itâs Sunday, letâs take a tour of my Parisian apartment! When starting any creative project, I create an Inspiration Phase to describe the desired style, feeling, and look. This creative exercise works well for all artistic projects - ranging from revamping your wardrobe to decorating your bedroom. For my French home, the Inspiration Phrase is â1970s Yves Saint Laurent meets The Row,â curating an edited style with warm tones muted colors, and layers of texture.
When sourcing for the classic Haussmannian apartment, I focused on French designers and artists so the space reflects the architecture and neighborhood. A lot of people ask me, âDid you ship furniture from Austin?â No! Itâs a great question but Paris is the mecca of design (imo) and I craved a blank slate, carte blanche. I sourced all the furniture from French flea markets (not your typical American flea market), Parisian vintage stores, Facebook Marketplace, and Selency (sister company of Chairish).
Thanks for reading Postcards from Paris! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.
How did I start the decorating process? When my family and I moved in, I immediately bought the necessities- a small IKEA dining table (for the European style kitchen), vintage chairs from Facebook marketplace, IKEA beds with storage, and mattresses from Amazon France (very different than American Amazon and not as good lol). Once we had a the basics, I didnât rush into any furniture + decor purchases.
My first big purchase was the large 1960s Guillerme et Chambron oak table with 1960s Emile Baumann sleigh dining chairs, both from the Paris Flea Market. For the living room, I always knew that I wanted black Togos since they are very kid friendly and easy to clean. A general rule to decorating is to buy what you LOVE and every selection MUST fit within your inspiration phase. I hope this helps you decorate your place or supports your next creative project! If you have any questions, please leave a comment below.
I feel grateful to Vogue Living for running a story about my apartment and you can read that article here . If youâre interested in finding your own Parisian treasures at the Paris Flea Market, Iâm booking shopping experiences (aka tours) for 2024. I can help you find the French antiques of your dreams! If you need design help, Iâll always available virtually for consultations and in-person in Austin during the Summer of 2024.
What are the takeaways from this story? Create an inspiration phrase before starting any creative project. If youâre looking for French vintage or antiques, search online at Chairish, 1st Dibs, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or come shop the Paris Flea Market with me. If youâre starting a design project, read How to Start a Design Project and How to Create a Vision Board for Any Project . Lastly, take your time to curate your dream home.
Without further ado, letâs start the tourâŠ

A Parisian Apartment With the Best Views in the City
Notre Dame? Check. Seine River? Check.
The first level features a large living room with an extended balcony that has three (!) different sets of doors that lead outside (excuse us while we daydream about bathing in all that natural light). The city literally comes to you â you basically get round-the-clock sight-seeing access without even stepping foot outside.
Of course, the decor doesn't disappoint either (and you stared out the windows all day, people might start talking.) Walls of wood paneling give the home a sophisticated vibe, and blend seamlessly into one of our other favorite features: the stairs. Why? Because they start off as a single stairwell and halfway up to the second level they spilt straight down the middle into two. It's a little funky compared to the rest of the home's classic interior design and kind of reminds us of a fun house â or a palace!
On the second level you'll find three bedrooms, each with a private bathroom. Can't you just imagine waking up naturally as the sunlight hits your face, then walking over to your bathroom that's also  drenched in sunlight as prepare for the day? Clearly we're not obsessed with this home at all.

Step Inside a Historic Paris Apartment That Brims With Charming Details and Antique Pieces
By Gay Gassmann
Photography by Nicolas Mathéus
It all started with a piano and a chance encounter in Paris . âThe apartment has been in the family since the late 1970s,â the Beirut-born inhabitant explains of her abode, which is located not far from the Arc de Triomphe. âThe previous owner had this piano and said, âIf you want the apartment, you have to take the piano,â since he didnât want to move it out. It then became the starting point for everything [that followed].â
A funny anecdote, yes, but one of two serendipitous origin stories that are key to understanding how the appartement came to exist in its current form. When asked how he and his client first connected, French architect Benoit Dupuis says with a smile: âIt was about 10 years ago, and it all happened in a boutique I designed for Christian Louboutin in Paris. One of the customers asked the saleswoman who designed the store, and if she could meet me. I happened to be [right] there!â At the time, Dupuisâs future client said she might have a potential project for him. A few years later they reconnected and started working on the apartment overhaul.
Right off the main entrance is the light-filled breakfast room, where family antiques mingle with Edmond Petit seats. On the back wall hangs a work by Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum and on the ceiling is You Pay by the artist collective known as Claire Fontaine. Dupuis designed the inner shutters.
â[Itâs] in a Haussmann-style building,â Dupuis explains of the residence. âThe place was a bit dark, but bourgeois and good taste. The idea was to keep the historic elements, like the moldings, and to think about the art collection.â The clientâwho now counts Dupuis as a personal friendâadds, âWe kept the integrity of the original space. [Thatâs] why I think itâs so charming.â
Importantly, the duo made sure to preserve the apartmentâs strong sense of personal details. Itâs full of family mementos (the antique pieces originally belonged to the clientâs aunt) and fun designs from the 1970s and 1980s. Many of those objects trace back to when the apartment was originally done by Parisian decorator Jean-Dominique Bonhotal.
Summer Sale: Become an AD PRO member for only $20 $12 per month.
âWhat we did was mix it all up with things I really cared about,â the client elaborates, noting that they were careful to keep the soul of the home intact while freshening it a bit. âWe threw in some midcentury pieces and Benoit designed the built-in closets. They donât have feet so they look like they are floatingâI wanted everything to be light and almost transparent.â
Dupuis confirms that the design brief he received was to brighten the space while keeping its circulation flowing. The four bedrooms are lined up in a manner not dissimilar from that of a hotel. Everything seems to disappear into the walls. Ultimately, the overall feeling is one of a cool, understated French modernism.
Amidst that serene canvas, contemporary artworks easily pop. Many of the piecesâwhich were purchased throughout Europeâhad long been in storage. âWhen we opened up the crates, the most magical thing happened,â the client recalls. âEverything was like it had been bought specifically for the apartment. It was a fantastic feeling. We placed every single piece!â Yet another example of French serendipity.

Where to watch movies for free in Moscow this summer
People watching a movie in a Pioner 24-hour open-air cinema in Gorky Park.
Temporary cinemas will be popping up across Moscow very soon, starting from July 16. All of the spots are brilliant examples of either constructivist or avant-garde architecture, so expect striking settings. A selection of classic Soviet films will be aired using cinematic equipment from the last century. All the screenings are free although online registration is required beforehand, while there will also be guided tours of the spaces, organized by the “Moscow through the Engineer's Eyes” company.
Registration will be open soon at mos-kino.ru
Bread factory
Following the success of former factories transformed into art spaces (VinZavod, Arma, Trekhgornaya manufacture), Khlebzavod (“bread factory”) No 9 is one newly opened joint that is attracting creative types from all over the city. The movie Time! Forward! will be screened in the building’s boiler room on July 16. It follows workers from the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, one of the largest steel companies in Russia, and is based on a novel by Soviet writer Valentin Kataev.
What’s more, Khlebzavod is a monument to constructivist architecture. Where better to watch such a film?
Novodmitrovskaya St. 1
Roof of the Narkomfin Building
The Narkomfin Building was originally designed to house high ranking employees at the Commissariat of Finance. It was built by architects Moisei Ginsburg and Ignaty Milinis. Also a fine example of constructivism, it’s currently in a state of disrepair, locked down, and fairly difficult to get into - which is like a red flag to a bull for more adventurous types.
However, on July 30 the place will be opened up and people will be welcomed onto the roof to watch the film Faith and Truth.
Novinsky Blvrd . 25b1
Khrushchyovka courtyard
A courtyard located in the 9th experimental block of the Novye Cheremushki district will turn into an outdoor cinema this summer. Cheremushki is the first district where Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchyov decided to build the iconic Khrushchyovka apartment blocks in the 1950s. As a result, thousands of Russians were given their own pads after decades living huddled together in communal apartments known as kommunalka .
Cheremushki is the adapted film-version of Dmitry Shostakovich’s operetta and will be shown here on Aug. 6. The organizers of the multiple screenings - the Moskino cinema chain - say they will revive the Soviet tradition of neighbors meeting in courtyards for a good old tongue wag. There will also be a guided tour of the block.
Address to be confirmed at mos-kino.ru
Pioneers Palace
If you want a slice of the postwar Soviet avant-garde style, head to the Pioneers Palace at Vorobyevy Gory. Pioneers Palaces were youth centers for sport, creativity, and hobbies for Young Pioneers (a communist organization for children) during the Soviet Union. There were dance classes, martial arts, drawing, and many other activities.
To Love a Man , a movie about two young architects building a new town in Siberia, will be shown here on Aug. 22. There will also be a lecture about building experiments in the 20th century.
Kosygina St. 17b2
A secret place
The last cinema venue remains a secret. On Aug. 27 there will be a screening, but at the moment no one knows where. Information will appear on mos-kino.ru but those who attend all four screenings above will be able to guess the last location.
A talk about architecture and Soviet history also will be hosted here.

Rusmania âą Deep into Russia
Out of the Centre
Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monasteryâs buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezhâs Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s. Â
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
