Diploma in Hospitality Management

The aim/focus of the Diploma in Hospitality Management is to provide learners with the appropriate knowledge, technical and personal skills and attitudes to work effectively, efficiently and sustainably at operational and supervisory levels within the hospitality industry. Their basic managerial and high level operational competencies in hospitality management operation will provide the foundation to process into managerial positions. The diploma will enable graduates to manage future operations competently including front office management, housekeeping, culinary arts, beverage services, practical knowledge of wines, cocktails and Barista training

Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management

The aim of the qualification is to develop the student's applied and cognitive competencies in the acquisition, interpretation, understanding and applications of hospitality management principles. The student will be able to analyze and explain strategic and operational decisions in the context of the hospitality and/or tourism industry and to assess and interpret the external impact of decisions. The student will also be able to reflect on their managerial decisions and applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of hospitality management.

Postgraduate Diploma in Hospitality Management

The aim of the qualification is to provide students with an academic learning opportunity to enter the hospitality industry at a higher management level, able to utilise and apply critical thinking skills and problem-solving techniques. The programme combines theory and practice to give students the chance to apply their knowledge, making use of case studies, practical engagement and site visits. Critical soft skills are embedded in the coursework. The programme also paves the way for students to develop an analytical mindset that will be crucial for managers and leaders in the field.

Programme Description

• Evaluate the theoretical concepts/frameworks used in understanding strategy, including the traditional perspective, the resource - based view, and the stakeholder view. 
• Reflect and review theoretical concepts/frameworks used in strategy formulation at the corporate, business, and functional levels.
• Independently apply theoretical knowledge of the value chain and create an industry or subindustry value chain. 
• Critically analyse and address the business - level strategies of hospitality organizations by determining if it is a cost leader, differentiator, or best value and whether it addresses a broad or narrow market focus; 
• Critically analyse and solve problems based on evaluation and synthesis within a work environment or a simulation of a practical situation; 
• Conceptualise identify and define the problem to be explored and the work to be completed, thus learning from the experience rather than using passive learning methods; 
• Critically apply academic knowledge in the investigation of a business problem or issue; 
• Plan the research methods.

With such wonderful natural assets, it may seem that this is the easiest job in the world – but it is also very difficult to compress all the compelling reasons why people should visit our beautiful province into one brand promise. For this reason, we have identified our core brand values - including Wildlife and Bush, Adventure and Culture and Heritage – and weave our brand positioning around these.

To achieve our objectives the Division engages in advertising, brand building & positioning, as well as trade relations activities, event marketing and Business Tourism (MICE) initiatives. We also work with key stakeholders, both locally and internationally, in order to drive conversion through product and packages – and exhibit at both local and international consumer and trade shows to drive demand and grow travel to the province.

Tourism Registration and Information Business Unit derive its mandate from the national and provincial legislation, namely :-

• The Tourism Act No. 3 of 2014 which provides, among others, for the registration of the tourist guides; and
• The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency Act No. 5 of 2005 which also provides for the registration of tourist guides and other persons conducting tourism related business in the Province.
• Tourism Registration and Information Business Unit is therefore responsible for providing the following functions :-
• Processing applications for registrations of persons conducting tourism business in the province;
• Promotion and development of the tourist guiding sector in the province;
• Conducting education and awareness campaigns; and
