Salar de Uyuni tour options

With the natural beauty of Salar de Uyuni and all its breathtaking surroundings, it’s no wonder the Bolivia Salt Flat is one of the world’s most popular tours. Luckily, theres an option for all travelers, whether short on time or traveling at a slower pace. Let’s take a look in more detail.

One-day tours are a great way for those who don’t have much time to see the salt flats. Due to the time restriction, you won’t get a chance to visit the incredible surrounding attractions. However, you will be far from disappointed when you leave as these tours still give you plenty of time to soak in the magic of Salar de Uyuni and capture jaw-dropping photos that you didn’t even know were possible.

One-day tours can only be taken from Uyuni. Buses arrive here very early in the morning to allow enough time for those on board to do take the tour the day they arrive. These tours start at around 10am and finish at around 5pm, allowing enough time for those on the tour to catch an overnight bus to their next destination.

The historical and intriguing train graveyard is the first stop on the one-day tours. This is followed by Colchani, the salt production site, where you will be taught the process of producing salt and visit one of the iconic salt hotels. A trip to Isla Incahuasi follows, where you’ll be able to discover giant cacti up to 10m high, incredible rock formations made of petrified coral and a enjoy a stunning 360-degree view of the tremendous salt flats.

3/4 Day Tour

The most popular and recommended way to discover Salar de Uyuni is by taking a 3 or 4 day tour in a 4×4 jeep. Three day tours depart from either Uyuni or San Pedro de Atacama and finish in Uyuni. The three day tour starting in San Pedro de Atacama and ending in Uyuni is ideal for those looking to continue traveling north after their visit to Salar de Uyuni. Alternatively, you can do the 4 day tour which starts and finishes in San Pedro de Atacama. This tour visits the same places as the 3 day tours but requires an extra night in order to make the relatively long journey back to Chile.

Day one is the same as the one day tour – departing from Uyuni at the same time and visiting the same places. Following a long day of exploring, you will spend the first night in one of the iconic salt hotels or salt hostels. These remarkable designs are made up almost entirely of salt blocks, from the bed and toilet to the walls and ceilings. Get yourself an early night sleep here as days two and three begin at the crack of dawn, with breakfast at 7am and 5am respectively. Across the next two days you will see everything that Salar de Uyuni has to offer. Where is Salar de Uyuni?

Salar de Uyuni is in the southwestern corner of Bolivia, high in the Andes Mountains. The closest major city is La Paz, Bolivia, though many places in Chile are far closer.

How to get to Salar de Uyuni

There are multiple options for how to see the salt flats, ranging from doing it yourself using public transportation to a multi-day organized tour. The quickest way will be to fly to the town of Uyuni from La Paz or Santa Cruz and take a day tour from there.

However, for a more fascinating tour of the volcanic landscape of the Andes in southwest Bolivia I highly recommend doing a 4-day / 3-night Salar de Uyuni tour from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile . This post focuses on that option. 

Salar de Uyuni from San Pedro Tour Cost

It’s possible to see the salt flats on your own, but you will see so much more with an organized tour. The tours are very cheap, as Bolivia is a very poor country. We went with Lithium Aventura (Lithium Adventures). Including transportation, lodging, all food, and the guide, it cost only about $50 USD per person per day, which is pretty standard for the basic tours. 

There are more luxurious tour options, and if you opt to do a private tour and not a combined group tour you’ll naturally pay well more than this. 

The currency in Bolivia is Bolivianos and if you want to purchase anything from the local towns you will need cash. You likely won’t encounter a bank or ATM until you get to the town of Uyuni after you visit the salt flats, so you will need to get some Bolivianos in San Pedro de Atacama. You will also need cash for tipping your guide/driver, though they will be happy to accept USD or EUR. 

Weather and when to do the tour

The weather is tricky up in the salt flats. You are very high in elevation, so nights and mornings can be very cold. But when the sun shines during the day it reflects off the white salt and it can be very hot.

It doesn’t rain much at Salar de Uyuni – only 5 inches per year – and if it does rain your trip could be ruined as the salt flats will flood. It can be beautiful to see this layer of water on the flats, reflecting the nearby mountains, but it can seriously hamper your movement around the flats.  

The rain usually falls in summer (Dec – Feb) so to be safe your best time would be outside of those months, though it will be a bit colder. That being said, I went in January and it only rained and that was on the first day. Luckily it didn’t rain up in the salt flats for me. The best time of year to visit would be Feb-April and Oct-Nov.

Your tour guide/driver and the people working at local hotels and cafes will most likely not speak any English. If no one in your group speaks Spanish, you will miss out on some of the information the guide can provide. Our guide could only speak a few words of English, though we had one person on our tour that spoke Spanish, so that really helped. 

Food on the tour

This part of Bolivia is not really for foodies. Don’t expect great food here in the mountains. The meals provided on the tour are mediocre at best. They are mostly rice and meat based or pasta based. Talk to the tour operator when you book if you’re a vegetarian and see what they can arrange for you. 

I will say, however, that the mangoes I bought on the side of the road in Uyuni were the best mangoes I’ve ever tasted in my life. If you see fresh fruit for sale, it’s gonna be pretty damn good.

Salar de Uyuni elevation

If you have ever struggled with altitude sickness you should speak with your doctor before committing to this trip. Most of the trip is spent high in the mountains, considerably higher than you can go in the United States unless you’re climbing Denali in Alaska.

You will top out at about 16,250 feet (4950m) and not get any lower than about 12,000 feet (3650m). There is not really any time to acclimatize, but San Pedro itself is about 7900 feet (2400m) so if you spend a few days there first it will help. There is not much hiking on the tour, so that helps with avoiding altitude sickness.  

You should expect to see quite a few llamas and thousands of flamingos, but not much else, maybe an elusive fox or two. There is very little vegetation along the tour route, so not ideal grounds for wildlife. You also won’t see a tree the entire trip, just a few species of cactus.

Poverty and litter

Bolivia is a pretty poor country. Nearly 40 percent of the country lives in poverty, and it’s higher in rural regions where you will be on this tour. The extreme poverty makes it very cheap to travel here, but remember how fortunate you are compared to the locals when you are there.

In a small village in the mountains I played soccer with a little boy named Santiago on a dirt pitch without a single patch of grass with a dilapidated old ball. It broke my heart seeing this kid playing in such poor conditions and knowing that he’ll likely never be able to experience playing on a grass pitch. Of all the poverty I saw in Bolivia, this image sticks with me. 

I am always saddened to see the amount of litter everywhere in developing nations, and Bolivia was no exception. Sanitary services are lacking and locals just throw their garbage anywhere. As a tourist, do your part to keep Bolivia beautiful and don’t litter just because the locals do it. 

Tourist Visa

Bolivia offers visa free travel for nearly everyone from developed nations. But not for Americans. If you’re an American going to Bolivia you need to be prepared with $160 USD of cash (in good condition) to pay when you enter the country, whether by air or land. There are some forms and you need to show proof of travel accommodations and proof you will leave the country.

Technically you are also required to show you have been vaccinated for Yellow Fever, but if you do the Salar de Uyuni tour from San Pedro de Atacama this will not be required, as the elevation you will be at is so high that mosquitoes are not present. If you are going to Uyuni a different way, like through the airport in La Paz, be prepared to show your vaccination card. 

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

To do this tour you’ll base yourself in the Chilean resort town of San Pedro de Atacama. It’s a beautiful little town that is catered to tourists so you have a ton of options for booking your hotel or hostel.

We stayed at Hostal Candelaria and highly recommend it for a comfortable and very affordable stay. We had a few nights booked at a $200/night resort outside of town and had such a horrible experience we left after one night and went back to Candelaria.

As mentioned before, the best way to see Salar de Uyuni is with an organized tour and this post focuses on the 4 day / 3 night tour from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.

If you are on a very, very tight budget you can see the salt flats on your own , but you will miss out on a lot of amazing places that you can only get to with a 4×4 off-road vehicle. For the vast majority of the drive there are no actual roads. You cruise along sandy trails and drive freely on the salt flats.

The tours are all small groups, as only 6 or 7 people can fit into the SUVs that the tour companies use, so it doesn’t even feel like a group tour. Using a licensed tour company is absolutely the way to go. 

How to book the tour

It is easy to book a tour online by email with one of the operators or using an online tour booking platform like GetYourGuide . You can check out the various options for a Salar de Uyuni tour from San Pedro de Atacama using the banner below.

But even if you don’t plan ahead, you will have no problem booking something in San Pedro. There is always availability to squeeze a few more people in. We literally booked our tour the day before it left.

In the city center there is a street that is lined with tour offices . Posters on the window advertise various tours. Nearly all the operators will offer tours to Salar de Uyuni and they will all offer a pretty similar experience.

We chose Lithium Adventura based on online reviews and the fact that someone at their office spoke English. I can certainly recommend them, but can’t say the others aren’t just as good. They were up front about how our guide/driver would not speak English so we appreciated that.

I also appreciated that they warned me that as an American I would need $160 of cash in USD (see visa requirements above). I had to go to a bank and withdraw cash in USD. You can also go to an exchange kiosk, as these are everywhere around town.

We paid for the tour in cash directly to the office and we were booked for a 7:20 AM pickup the next day. The process was incredibly easy. My biggest gripe was that my Bolivian visa would cost more than the tour itself!

When we did the tour it was about $150 USD for a 4 day / 3 night tour (currently more like $200-$300 as of 2023). It’s an incredibly affordable trip for what you get. 

PRO TIP: if you’re on a longer jaunt around South America don’t take all your luggage with you on the tour. Make sure to book ahead where you will stay on the day you get back to San Pedro and go there beforehand to drop your bags. In the SUV there is not much room and all luggage is kept atop the vehicle. Pack lightly if you can. 

There are various tour options for Salar de Uyuni from San Pedro de Atacama. The most popular – and the one we did and have dedicated this post to – is the 4 day / 3 night San Pedro to Uyuni and back excursion. The tour includes three nights of lodging in basic accommodations as well as food, which is typically served at the lodges (though really they are more like hostels).

Accommodation types

The type of room you get at the lodges seems to vary based on what’s available at the lodge that particular day. The first night we slept in a dorm style room with four of our tour mates in the middle of nowhere. The other two nights we had private rooms with twin beds.

The rooms were very basic. There was no AC or heat, but the weather was pretty temperate so that didn’t really matter. Electricity is off and on. You are off the grid here so everything is run on generator power. Bathrooms will be shared.

Meals will be served at specific times (dinner is late in the evening) and will be pretty basic rice or pasta based entrees. An appropriate way to describe the food would be mediocre at best.  

Days in the Jeep

You will spend most of your day packed in the SUV riding across dirt and sand so try to get comfortable. The SUVs are reliable, but old. The tour is off road, so breakdowns are relatively common. The drivers are all basically licensed mechanics though, so you’re not gonna get stuck.

If all this sounds a bit much like roughing it to you there are other more luxurious options. Some tour operators will offer upgrades to stay overnight at actual hotels, but you also have the option to book a private tour tailored to your needs. There are some pretty glamorous hotels near the salt flats. Expect these private tours to be anywhere from 5 to 25 times the cost of a group tour however. 

The route between San Pedro and Salar de Uyuni is loaded with spectacular sights. Conical mountains of active volcanoes rise from the red and brown valley. You won’t see a tree anywhere around here. Pink flamingos fly around you as smoke from geothermal pools of boiling water carries off into the distance. Valleys of endless sand and funky rocks stretch on as far as the eye can see. And you still haven’t even reached the salt flats.

After experiencing this exotic landscape of what seems like it should be another planet you reach the flats. Here you freely drive along the endless white plains of salty earth, small mountains covered in giant cacti scattered here and there.  (Note that the route shown in the map below is not an exact representation of the trip, as Google Maps cannot account for all the off-roading that is done)

After being picked up from your accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama you will ride on a bus to the Bolivian border. You’ll climb straight up about 5000 feet in elevation until you’re as high as the tip of the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States.

At the border you’ll get split into the smaller group that you’ll be with for the rest of the tour. We ended up in a Land Cruiser with 4 other travelers and our driver, Carlos.

You will spend the entire first day in Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve of Flora and Fauna. This is a large national park that costs an extra 150 Bolivianos (about $22 USD, not included in the tour). Known for its lakes full of flamingos and giant volcanoes, you’ll most likely spend your first night here in a very basic lodge. 

Key stops on day 1

Some of the key stops on the first day are: 

• Laguna Verde (green lake) 
• Laguna Blanca (white lake)
• Sol de Mañana (geothermal area with smoking ponds and geysers)
• Laguna Colorada (red lake known for its flamingos) 
• Desierto Salvador Dalí (Salvador Dali desert, named after the painter due to its raw and rugged terrain)
• Termas de Polques (hot springs, just a tiny pool, I didn’t go in)

Driving around this park, you really feel like you’ve left earth and landed on Mars. The scenes of flamingos eating from pink and red lakes with snow-capped volcanoes in the background are simply stunning. You’ll have plenty of time to walk around all these uniquely colorful lakes and take photos.  

The second day is a long day in the Land Cruiser, the focus being on getting to Salar de Uyuni for the night. But you will pass quite a few more lakes and odd rock formations, such as Arbol de Piedra (Tree rock), a rock that resembles a tree. It’s the closest thing you’ll get to seeing an actual tree on this tour. The region between Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve and Salar de Uyuni is barren, with funky rock formations protruding from the desert sand everywhere you look.

You might stop in the tiny town of Villa Martin to try some quinoa beer. Quinoa production is one of the main sources of income in this part of Bolivia. There are quinoa farms all over the place around here. The quinoa beer is expensive compared to everything else in Bolivia, but do the locals a favor and try it.

Here in town you’ll also see your first sightings of the Bolivian echinopsis atacamensis . This is a cactus species that looks strikingly similar to the American saguaro cactus found in Arizona. I love cacti so I was super excited to see these things growing in Bolivia. 

You will spend the second night of the tour in a hostel literally made out of salt. We stayed at the Hostel de Sal , but if you don’t stay there it will be something similar. Instead of using stone or brick and mortar to build masonry structures, they use salt blocks in this part of the world. Even the tables, beds, and furniture were made of salt. Everything except the roof. I found this building made of salt absolutely fascinating.

Key stops on day 2

The second day on tour isn’t quite as other-worldly as the first day, but you’ll still see some cool things like:

• Villa Martin
• Hostel de Sal

You’ll wake early – like 4:30 AM early – to get an early start to the day. The sun rises early and you will watch it from an “island” in the salt flats. Salar de Uyuni – the Bolivian salt flats – is the highlight of the tour. It’s what you came all this way for.

The “island” actually was an island once when the salt flat was at the bottom of the ocean, but today it’s more of just a little mountain in the middle of the flats. Climb up to the highest point on the island for a beautiful view of the sun rising over the white valley floor. You’ll have a little time to watch the sun illuminate the salt flats before breakfast, which you’ll enjoy at the base of the island. 

If you like this cacti then you’ll love Saguaro National Park in Arizona!

The rest of the morning you will get time to find an isolated spot of the salt flats and experiment with some perspective pictures. See my examples below. The flats are huge so your driver will know of somewhere he can take you to get away from other people.

Not including sunrise on the island and breakfast, you’ll probably get about an hour on the flats for photos, which is enough time in my opinion. When you’re done at the world’s largest and highest salt flats you will head east towards the town of Uyuni. 

There are a few more spots along the way where you’ll stop for lunch and shopping should you wish to buy something, then you’ll arrive in Uyuni and check out a place called the Train Cemetery just south of town. This place is full of rusted steel shells of old trains.

You’ll get about two hours of free time in Uyuni before it’s time to start on your way back to San Pedro. There is not much to see in Uyuni itself. We ended up just going to a café and sitting out in the sun with a beer.

Just note that if you purchase any fresh produce you cannot take it back to Chile, so you will have to finish it before the next morning. We did not know this at the time and ended up chowing down on four giant mangos for dessert that night. 

Key stops on day 3

You will make better time on the way back to San Pedro as there will not be any stops. You even get to drive on some paved roads. We stayed in a small village called Villamar Mallcu on the way back. The highlights of your third day are:

• The salt flats at Salar de Uyuni
• Train Cemetery

You will again wake up at the crack of dawn so the driver can take you back to the Chilean border by about 11 AM, where the bus will be waiting to take you back to San Pedro. What a journey it has been! 

The 4 day / 3 night tour from San Pedro de Atacama to Salar de Uyuni is a trip I recommend everyone to take at some point in their life. The entire journey is stunning and you’ll see some of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes the world has to offer.

Even when including the cost of the Bolivian visa for Americans, the trip is still worth it and very affordable for what you get. I hope you have a great time on your adventure through Bolivia!

I don’t recall it being too bumpy, but it is all dirt roads or just open sand, and it’s pretty tighlty packed in the Jeeps. I don’t believe the roads were in poor condition and think they were quite smoothe. But don’t quote me on that! I don’t think it will be a problem for someone with back problems, but it might be good to inquire with one of the tour operators as they will have the best info on the latest road conditions.

Hi Chris, Another question: do you know if it’s possible to do a 4 or 5 day-trip from San Pedro to Uyuni or Tupiza *including* the Sud Lipez?

Thierry, I had to look up Sud Lipez, but I believe you’re referring to the volanic high mountains of southern Bolivia where the pink lakes are and the flamingos and all that stuff, right? The route to Salar de Uyuni goes through that region of Bolivia and tha majority of the tour is actually in that area. Unless you’re referring to somewhere else? I believe 3 nights 4 days is the longest tour, at least that Lithium offers. You might be able to contact them to request a custom tour though!

Day 1 - reserve eduardo avaroa.

Welcome to Bolivia!

We leave San Pedro de Atacama early this morning for a short and scenic drive to Bolivia’s remote southwestern border (drive is unaccompanied by guide, only driver). Upon arrival, you will be greeted by our staff who will be ready to assist with migrations procedures if needed.

Once in Bolivia, we start our 4WD adventure entering Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, home to endemic wildlife and protected Andean landscapes. Our first stops are Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde, two jewels in the middle of an unforgiving high-altitude (4500m) desert. Continuing, we have the opportunity to spend some time in the hot springs of Polques with stunning views of the Bolivian Altiplano. Later, we continue toward the boiling geysers and steam jets of Sol de Mañana at nearly 5000m!

The day’s main highlight is Laguna Colorada with its hundreds of pink flamingos and beautiful volcanic views all around it.

End the day by reaching our very basic lodge (Basic, Standard) or the more comfortable and private hotel (Plus) further north in the evening.

Day 2 - Lagoons, deserts & wildlife

Our second day will take us further north to our next destination in Salar de Uyuni (Plus) or the southern rim of it (Basic, Plus).

The morning will see us driving across scenic Andean landscapes, including the “Jewels of the Bolivian Altiplano” (a chain of pristine lagoons home to hundreds of flamingos you can see/photograph up close).

We will also be lucky enough to stop at other beautiful sites such as quirky rock formations and scenic viewpoints. The rest of the day will depend on the time of year in which you join us:

Dry season (May to November)

Plus package: We will enter the mighty Salar de Uyuni in the afternoon and enjoy our first taste of salt plains by driving to the northernmost end of the salt flats where we will be based for the night, not before enjoying the colors of sunset against the white backdrop of the Salar. Sleep in a village in the northern rim of the flats. Accommodation: Tayka Hotel de Sal or Tambo Coqueza

Basic & Standard packages: Our afternoon will be spent driving across remote backcountry and stopping at dramatic viewpoints such as Ollague Volcano viewpoint. We continue north and arrive in a small village just south of Uyuni Salt Flats.

Rainy season (December to April)

Plus package: In the afternoon, we will head toward the town of Colchani (past the town of Uyuni) where we will arrive in the southeastern rim of the salt flats. Here, the famed Salt Hotels are located where we will be able to enjoy a picturesque sunset before arriving in one of these unique hotels. Accommodation: In order of preference/availability: Hotel Palacio de Sal; Luna Salada or Cristal Samaña

Basic & Standard packages: Our afternoon will be spent driving across remote backcountry and stopping at local villages on the way to the town of Uyuni. We arrive by evening in Uyuni where lodging and fresh meals are available.

Day 3 - Salar de Uyuni

A full day is dedicated to enjoying the trip’s grand finale: Salar de Uyuni.

Plus: On our Plus package and in the dry season, we will visit the northern part of the salt flats, including the lesser-known village of Coqueza, gateway to the gorgeous Volcan Thunupa. You will optionally have the opportunity/time to take a moderate hike to an ancient site but what really stands out is the unmatched view of the entire extension of the Salar. Later, visit and hike to the top of Isla Incahuasi (easy to moderate hike) to enjoy the 360-degree views all around as well as the giant cacti growing on this bizarre island.

Basic & Standard: We will enter the salt flats through the southwestern end, immediately being mesmerized by the vastness and whiteness of this unique desert. Spend the rest of the day enjoying the deep-perspective effect which works great for fun photographs as well as climbing Incahuasi Island with its giant cacti to appreciate the sheer size of the salt flats thanks to the 360-degree view from here.

Plus, Basic & Standard: In the rainy season, you will enter the salt flats through the southeastern rim (all packages) and pass through the village of Colchani where you will be able to see its colorful market and optionally, a rustic, salt-processing plant. Most of the day will be spent slowly driving along the shore of the salt flats as it is not possible to drive much further.

Immediately, we are in awe by the perfect “mirror” of the sky at our feet. Take your time to find the perfect reflection as well as playing with the deep-perspective effect offered by the endless, flooded plains. Later in the afternoon (all packages), after plenty of time for photographs and good fun has been had, we will exit the salt flats and drive southbound, past the town of Uyuni (and a brief stop in the Train Cemetery). We will arrive in the village of Mallku Villamar for a good night’s rest.

Day 4 - Return to San Pedro de Atacama

The last day of our expedition will see us enjoying the last of the Bolivian highlands on the way to the border.

If you opted for a shared transfer from the border to San Pedro, you will have to be up by 4 AM this morning to be able to make the 9 AM bus. If you opted for a private transfer (recommended), departure time will be as usual, after breakfast in order to arrive at the border around noon.

Once at the border, our staff will help you board the next vehicle that will take you to San Pedro de Atacama arriving around noon (shared transfer, drop off is downtown) or about 4 PM (private transfer, drop off at hotel) where our services end.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

• This trip covers around 1000 Km in four days of off road driving at high altitude and cold climate
• The trip can be easily enjoyed if you are prepared. It is recommended you read the itinerary before booking
• You may attempt to form a small group of people to reduce costs, but bear in mind that the more people in the vehicle, the less comfortable the trip will be. Consider that you will be driving through rugged terrain and in most parts, it cannot even be considered a road (which is why we use top-notch 4WD vehicles)

In the morning, transfer from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile to the Bolivian border at Hito Cajon. You will be pick up by our Bolivian driver and guide at the Bolivian / Chilean border so-called Hito Cajon. Not far from the frontier, within the Bolivian territory the first highlight of the Nature Reserve Eduardo Avaroa is already waiting for you; the turquoise shiny “Laguna Verde” located at the foot of the majestic volcano “Licancabur”. After a stop you will travel through the Bolivian desert into the valley “Valle de las Damas del Desierto” or also know by the tourists as the “Salvador Dali desert” called so because of the rock formation carved by wind and weather, unique in their shape and scattered in this vast desert. Subsequently, you will pass the ¨Salar de Chalviri¨. Soon, you will reach the heart of Eduardo Avaroa Nature Reserve with their absolute highlight of this southern desert region; the ¨Laguna Colorada¨, with legions of flamingos waiting to be photograph. Passing the little village of Villa Mar with its green pastures for hundreds of Lamas you will reach the ¨Ciudad de Piedra¨ (stone village), a vast region of volcanic rock formations. You will keep travelling, visiting the ¨Cañon de la Cascada¨, and going further to find the small llama herders and quinoa farmers villages of San Augustin and San Juan, and finally to arrive to San Pedro de Quemes. In the morning there is the possibility to take the optional service of the llama shepherding, because it is a one-hour nonpareil experience, transferring dozens of llamas directed by the shepherd who is interested of making the visitors get to know a small example of the relationship between the man and the llama, so vital for the people’s lives of these distant places. If you are a more active person you can do a short hike through the canyon of Sinalaco, which it is a narrow transverse incision in the mountain range with high cliffs near to the shore of the Salar. With the jeep you will climb a narrow gravel road on the flanks of the towering mountains until you reach the top entry of the Cayon. A 1 to 1.5 hours hike will take you through the narrow zig-zag of the canyon downhill, with a small passage where hand applying is required (but even the most insecure hikers can master this point!). Down the Canyon the landscape offers you a comprehensive view of the foothills of the Salar. After you have been picked up here at the exit of the canyon our vehicle will lead you now to the entrance of the biggest highlight of your tour in Bolivia: the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt desert in the planet with approximately 12,000 km². You will then cross the salt lake, passing the Campanas islands, until you reach the north shore of the salt flat. Here at the foot of the Tunupa volcano you will find a place not visited by the conventional tourism despite the incomparable beauty of its landscape. There is a visit to the ruins know as the “Pucara de Ch’jini” which have several hundred years of history and are testimony of an ancient fortress with residential buildings, storage reservoir, guard posts, etc., you will reach the “Cathedral” top by a light climb of a narrow passage to enjoy an exposed lookout which opens an unforgettable view of the salt lake. Not far from Ch’jini located in Tahua your next accommodation is waiting for you, the Hotel Tayka de Sal (B/L/D).

Who does not want to miss a very special spectacle, get up early in the morning to admire the unique sunrise over the Salar! You will return to the hotel for breakfast. Enjoying the view at the flanks of the Tunupa volcano you will ascend to visit the cave and the mummies of Coquesa. From here the Salar lies literally at your feet. And because it is so beautiful and hardly to describe, today you will also have the opportunity again to enjoy the landscape of the Salar itself, crossing the Salar de Uyuni from north to east. Here you will visit the Incahuasi Island which is located in Salt Lake and is completely covered by a forest of giant cacti. A short trail takes you across the island where you can admire the centuries-old cactus that rise up to 12 meters into the blue sky. From the peak of the island you have a 360 ° viewpoint of the entire Salt flat. You’ll leave the Salar and a bouquet of colorful highland lagoons are waiting for you!. The colorful mountain lakes: Cañapa, Hedionda, Chiarkota, Honda and Ramaditas where you can spot a large number of flamingos or other birds of the area will provide you a unique opportunity to relax and enjoy photography. You will leave this valley of lagoons to dive into a sprawling sand and stone desert, the “Siloli desert”, a fantastic and surreal landscape that holds the whole color palette of terracotta and ocher tones. The trip will start pretty early in the morning taking you first to the “Arbol de Piedra”, a tree stone figure created by wind erosion, and then to the red-colored “Laguna Colorada” in the heart of Avaroa Reserve. From a slightly different angle, it is just as impressive as the first day of your travel in Bolivia! From here you will go to the “Sol de Mañana” geyser, a “devilish” spectacle of hissing steam columns where you have also reached the highest point of your journey at 5000 m.a.s.l. Subsequently, you will pass the ¨Salar de Chalviri¨ to reach the hot springs of Polques in which you will enjoy a relaxing bath surrounded by majestic landscapes. Inicio : Día 1 a las 07:00 en tu hotel en San Pedro de Atacama.

Término : Día 4 a las 13:00 en el centro o terminal de buses de San Pedro de Atacama (este horario de término podría verse modificado debido a condiciones climáticas o motivos de fuerza mayor, por lo que te recomendamos dejar tu salida de San Pedro de Atacama para el día siguiente después de la fecha de término del tour).

Día 1: Te recogeremos en tu hotel y saldremos en un minibus desde San Pedro de Atacama hasta la frontera con Bolivia, pasando por las oficinas fronterizas de Chile y Bolivia. Una vez en la frontera, cambiaremos de vehículo a un 4x4 para 6 personas. En este primer día visitaremos lugares del altiplano boliviano, como la laguna Blanca y la laguna Verde, situadas a los pies del volcán Licancabur. Continuaremos visitando el desierto Salvador Dalí, las termas de Polques, con algo de tiempo para el baño, y los geysers del Sol de Mañana, fuentes intermitentes de agua que brotan a una temperatura de 90 °C. Terminaremos el día en la laguna Colorada, centro de anidación de más de 30.000 flamencos. Esta noche nos hospedaremos en el refugio de Villamar.

Día 2 : Después de tomar desayuno, tomaremos la ruta a Tomás Lakha, donde podrás ver unas pinturas rupestres preincaicas. Después, visitaremos Italia Perdida, lugar en el que la roca volcánica tomó la forma de lo que parece ser una ciudad abandonada. Luego, iremos hasta la laguna Vinto y la laguna Catal, donde podrás caminar y ver la fauna típica del Altiplano boliviano. Posteriormente, visitaremos el cañón de la Anaconda y también el cañón de Sora, antes de continuar con el salar de Chiguana y llegar a Colcha K donde pasarás la segunda noche de alojamiento.

Día 3: Muy temprano en la mañana, iniciaremos nuestro último día de tour con la vista del amanecer en el Salar de Uyuni. Luego de esta experiencia, nos trasladaremos hasta la isla Incahuasi, una formación de roca calcárea situada en el centro del salar que podremos recorrer y tener otra perspectiva del salar. Continuaremos hacia el Museo de Sal y el pueblo de Colchani, ya fuera del salar. Desde aquí nos trasladaremos a Uyuni, pasando por el cementerio de trenes, donde realizaremos una pequeña parada para tomar fotografías. En Uyuni, nos despediremos de nuestro chofer guía, quien nos acompañó durante los anteriores tres días, y luego tendremos un tiempo libre para almorzar y recorrer parte de la ciudad. Posteriormente, nos reuniremos con el chofer que nos llevará de retorno, con una detención en Villamar para cenar y descansar.

Día 4: Nos levantaremos muy temprano para continuar nuestro viaje de retorno y llegar a la frontera de Chile y Bolivia. Una vez aquí, y después de los trámites correspondientes, cambiaremos de vehículo a un minibus para regresar a San Pedro de Atacama.

Invierno altiplánico

Durante los meses de enero a abril, se produce el fenómeno climático conocido como invierno altiplánico, período de lluvias en los Andes central. Debido a esto, es posible que el itinerario descrito se modifique de la siguiente manera:

• La segunda noche es en un hostal en Uyuni.
• No se visita la isla Incahuasi, lugar en el que existe mayor concentración de agua durante el período de lluvias.

Cambios por fuerza mayor

Este es un itinerario referencial. La ruta para llegar al salar, los lugares visitados, el orden indicado de estos y la hora de término del tour estarán siempre sujetos a cambios según condiciones climáticas, del camino, manifestaciones y disponibilidad de alojamientos. La confirmación del itinerario se obtiene en el briefing que entrega el operador un día antes del inicio de la actividad, lo que no quiere decir que no se modifique debido a que se produzca alguna de las situaciones antes mencionadas una vez que el tour ya haya comenzado.

Sí, es posible, de acuerdo con la disponibilidad. Puedes arrendarlo directamente en la oficina de San Pedro de Atacama un día antes del inicio del tour, por un valor de CLP$ 5.000. Una vez que finalices el tour, debes devolver el saco de dormir directamente en la oficina.

El efecto espejo se produce cuando hay agua sobre el salar. Esto ocurre sólo en periodos de lluvias (enero y febrero) y posterior a ellas (marzo).

¿Es posible realizar el tour con un conductor en otro idioma?

Sí, aunque solo en inglés. El servicio de conductor en inglés tiene un precio adicional de US$ 150 por grupo. Lo puedes seleccionar como servicio opcional durante el proceso de reserva.

¿Es posible realizar el tour en servicio privado?

¿En qué tipo de vehículo se realiza esta actividad?

La actividad se realiza en un minibús en Chile y en un 4x4 (Toyota Land Cruiser) en Bolivia, en un grupo de 6 personas.

¿Con cuánta anticipación debo reservar la actividad?

Debido a la alta demanda de la actividad, recomendamos reservar con al menos una semana de anticipación.

¿A qué se debe las restricciones para hacer este tour?

El tour se realiza en la región del Altiplano a una altitud que supera los 3000 m. Solo con esto, el cuerpo se somete a un estrés no acostumbrado, lo que puede causar malestar y riesgo en personas con las condiciones descritas en la sección de restricciones. Por otra parte, el tour no cuenta con seguro médico y en el trayecto no hay centros de asistencia para tratar este tipo de situaciones de manera adecuada.

¿Existe alguna restricción respecto a los lugares a los que llega el servicio de recogida?

El servicio de recogida no opera hacia ni desde alojamientos ubicados fuera del radio urbano de San Pedro de Atacama, alojamientos ubicados en ayllus cercanos a San Pedro de Atacama (Quitor, Yaye, Checar, Sequitor, Solor y Coyo) ni alojamientos del pueblo de Toconao.

¿Es necesario contar con una visa de turismo para ingresar a Bolivia?

Depende de la nacionalidad del pasajero. Pasajeros de Chile y del resto de Sudamérica, y pasajeros de Europa Occidental, no requieren visa de turismo, mientras que pasajeros de Estados Unidos, Centroamérica, Asia y África sí requieren visa de turismo, cuyo precio es US$ 160. La visa se obtiene directamente en la frontera, donde junto con el pago de la visa en efectivo deberá presentar su pasaporte y otros documentos. En caso de que seas extranjero residente en Chile, además de tu pasaporte, deberás llevar tu cédula de identidad para que acredites tu residencia ante las autoridades policiales en aduana.

¿Es necesario estar vacunado contra la fiebre amarilla para realizar el tour?

La vacuna contra la fiebre amarilla es exigida para todos los pasajeros que no retornan a San Pedro de Atacama y que pagan visa de turismo en la frontera (pasajeros que presenten documento de viaje de un país del grupo II).

¿Cuánto equipaje puedo llevar?

Cada pasajero podrá llevar como máximo un bolso o maleta de 18 kg y un saco de dormir, los cuales irán arriba del 4x4.

¿Qué tipo de enchufes hay en los alojamientos?

Los alojamientos tienen enchufes tipo C, que es compatible con los tipos E y F. De todas maneras, te recomendamos llevar un adaptador para evitar cualquier inconveniente durante tu viaje.

¿Es necesario llevar saco de dormir?

No es indispensable, ya que los alojamientos cuentan con frazadas. De todas maneras, considera la información sobre el clima de acuerdo con tu fecha de viaje, y si crees que sentirás frío, te recomendamos llevar tu propio saco de dormir con temperatura de confort 0 ºC.

¿Cómo es el clima a lo largo del tour?

En verano (diciembre a marzo), la temperatura va aproximadamente desde los 4 °C como mínima, hasta los 23 °C como máxima. En invierno (junio a septiembre), la temperatura va aproximadamente desde los -20 °C como mínima, hasta los 16 °C como máxima.

¿Cuánto dinero debo llevar al tour?

Recomendamos llevar al menos Bs. 500 por persona para los gastos no incluidos en el tour, como ingreso a parques, impuesto, acceso a baños y agua.

¿Dónde puedo cambiar dinero a bolivianos?

En la calle Toconao, en San Pedro de Atacama (intersección con Caracoles), puedes encontrar algunas casas de cambio donde puedes obtener bolivianos para llevar al tour.

¿Qué tan probable es sufrir de puna o mal de altura durante el tour?

Gran parte del tour se realiza a más de 4000 m de altitud, por lo que es bastante probable sufrir de puna, en especial el primer día del tour. Para evitarlo o aminorar los malestares, recomendamos aclimatar uno o dos días sobre los 2500 m de altura, tomar mucha agua antes y durante el tour, comer liviano (evitar carnes) los días previos al tour, y no tomar alcohol la noche anterior a la salida del tour.

¿En qué consiste la alimentación incluida?

La alimentación del tour es variada, e incluye té, café, pan, galletas y frutas para el desayuno, y carnes, pastas, arroz, sopa y verduras para el almuerzo y la cena. En caso que requieras un menú vegetariano, debes marcar tu preferencia en el proceso de reserva.

¿Qué pasa con el tour en caso de lluvia?

En caso de lluvia, el orden de los lugares a visitar, la posibilidad de ver el amanecer y los alojamientos estarán sujetos a cambios, debido a que algunos caminos pueden estar cerrados. Sumado a lo anterior, el Salar de Uyuni se ve obstaculizado por el agua y la Isla Incahuasi (ubicada en medio del salar) permanece cerrada. Por ello, no se visita la Isla Incahuasi y se ingresa al salar sólo hasta una distancia que no signifique un peligro para los pasajeros.

¿Con qué infraestructura cuenta cada refugio?

El refugio Huayllajara tiene habitaciones compartidas de máximo 6 personas, con baño compartido sin duchas (Bs. 20 por ducha con agua caliente, pago en efectivo). Colcha K tiene habitaciones dobles, triples o cuádruples (de acuerdo con disponibilidad), con baño compartido (ducha con agua caliente). Refugio en Villamar tiene habitación compartida doble, triple o cuádruple (de acuerdo con disponibilidad), con baño compartido, ducha con agua fría (Bs. 10 por ducha con agua caliente, pago en efectivo). Ninguno incluye internet.

Programa de viajes para conocer el Salar de Uyuni en sólo 4 días. Comenzaremos en San Pedro de Atacama y cruzaremos la frontera entre Chile y Bolivia. Visitaremos el pueblo San Pedro de Quemes y disfrutaremos de las mejores vistas del Salar de Uyuni. El valor en pesos chilenos es SOLO REFERENCIAL. Se aplicará tipo de cambio al momento del pago de la reserva.

Día 1: LAGUNAS DE COLOR Y DESIERTOS

Lo que visitarás:.

• 1 San Pedro de Quemes

Durante este primer día, iniciamos muy temprano desde su hotel, para posterior tramite de documentos en servicios de Migración en Chile y Bolivia, lugar Hito Cajón.

Posteriormente en transporte 4×4 jeep, visitando maravillosos y coloridos paisajes y lagunas que visitaremos, son lugares únicos como Lagunas Blanca y Verde, Desierto surrealista Salvador Dalí, Aguas Termales de Polques (baño), continuando el día llegamos al Campo de Géiser (Sol de mañana) a 4.850 msnm, para después llegar observar el colorido Laguna Colorada, concentrado con centenares de flamencos de las 3 especies de sud-América y otras especies de aves y animales andinos.

Durante la tarde nos dirigimos hasta nuestro hostal básico, para tener un descanso para el próximo día, Mallku Villa Mar. 

Seguimos el camino hacia San Pedro de Quemes, pero antes pasaremos por el pueblo Refugio, San Felipe, pampas de Chiguana, Puesto Militar, Miradir del volcán Ollagüe, Lagunas Cañapa, Hedionda, Chiarcota, Honda y Ramaditas, todo esto se realiza pasando por el famoso “Pasito Tuntún”, donde no se puede avanzar a más de 4 kilómetros por hora.

Durante la tarde, llegaremos al pueblo San Pedro de Quemes, ubicado en el Salar de Uyuni, muy cerca de los volcanes.

20:00 horas: cena y alojamiento en Hotel de Piedra. 

Día 2: VILLA MAR – COLCHA K HOSTAL DE SAL TAMBO LOMA

Después del desayuno iniciamos las visitas a los valles de rocas, formados por depósito de materiales volcánicas que marcaron variadas figuras de caprichos geológicos, tales como la Copa del Mundo, Camello, Catedrales de rocas que dan imágenes a ciudades abandonados por el tiempo, para después llegar hasta la Laguna Catal, lugar único rodeado de rocas coloridos oxidados de minerales por radiación solares.

Continuando nuestro recorrido visitaremos el mirador de la Anaconda, pasando por cultivos de Quinua y pueblos altos andinos, con presencia de animales domésticos (llamas, ovejas, cabras) hasta llegar a nuestro hostal de Sal Tambo Loma, acomodación habitación twin o matrimonial baño privado, agua caliente.

Día 3: Salar de Uyuni – CIUDAD DE UYUNI – VILLA MAR

• 1 Salar de Uyuni

Nuestra experiencia inicia muy temprano al lugar soñado Salar de Uyuni, hasta llegar a la Isla Incahuasi, para observar un espléndido amanecer acompañado de milenarios cactus  Cardones que miden hasta 10 mts de altura, la vista de 360° nos deleitará todas nuestras expectativas de nuestros planes a este sitio natural incomparable.

Luego de nuestra experiencia retornamos a la base de la isla para degustar de un exquisito desayuno, preparados sobre mesas de sal muy característico de la zona.

Continuando nuestra experiencia en el salar, con tomas fotográficas con perspectivas con grandes imaginaciones utilizando objetos, para recuerdos que serán inolvidables momentos de su vida. Luego visitaremos el Museo de Sal, Monumento de Rally Dakar, Ojos de Salar hasta llegar a orillas del Salar al Pueblo de Colchani, a la feria artesanal local, elaborados con lanas de camélidos y sal para su posterior visita al Cementerio de Trenes, finalizando nuestro programa de tours a primeras horas de la tarde.

El retorno se realiza por la tarde visitando por las rutas mineras de San Cristóbal, hasta llegar a nuestro hostal básico Villa Mar, en habitación compartida (descanso).

Día 4: VILLA MAR – HITO CAJÓN – SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA

Partimos muy temprano a las tierras altas, hasta llegar a Hito Cajón para su respectivo transfer a San Pedro de Atacama, llegando a mediodía.

DÍA 1: Aventura por las Lagunas de Colores 

Nuestra emocionante aventura comienza en San Pedro de Atacama, punto de partida de un viaje inolvidable hacia la frontera entre Chile y Bolivia, conocida como Hito Cajón. Aquí, nos esperan los resistentes vehículos Toyota 4×4, dispuestos a llevarnos a explorar la maravillosa Reserva Eduardo Avaroa (REA). Este día nos sumergirá en paisajes impresionantes, que incluyen las famosas Lagunas Verde y Blanca, junto con el misterioso Desierto de Dalí.

Disfruta de un merecido y relajante baño en las Termas de Polques y siente la emoción de explorar los Geíseres Sol de Mañana, ubicados a una altitud de 5,000 metros. El día culmina con la visita a la majestuosa Laguna Colorada, hogar de cientos de flamencos rosados. Tu primera jornada concluye en el acogedor pueblo de Villamar, donde te espera un confortable hostal para pasar la noche.

DÍA 2: Atracciones de Altiplano  y Visita al Salar más grande del planeta 

En nuestro segundo día, continúa asombrándote con la diversidad de formaciones rocosas únicas. Exploraremos las Lagunas Vinto y Catal, donde la sorprendente flora y fauna andina te cautivarán. Contempla el imponente Cañón de la Anaconda desde un mirador privilegiado y atraviesa pintorescos pueblos del Altiplano. Una parada en San Cristóbal nos brindará la oportunidad de apreciar su histórica iglesia y conocer su cultura. Nuestro viaje nos lleva a la ciudad de Uyuni, donde exploraremos el intrigante Cementerio de Trenes y el encantador pueblo de Colchani.

Luego, ingresaremos al famoso Salar de Uyuni, donde descubrirás los fascinantes Ojos del Salar y visitarás el intrigante Museo de Sal. El día concluye con un inolvidable atardecer en el corazón del Salar, y pasarás la noche en un acogedor hostal familiar.

DÍA 3 : Transfer de  regreso a San Pedro de Atacama

En nuestro tercer y último día, regresaremos temprano a Hito Cajón. Desde allí, abordaremos un autobús de regreso a San Pedro de Atacama, poniendo fin a esta inolvidable travesía.

• Cámara, batería extra  –  Para no quedarse si batería, para tomar las mejores fotos de su vida. Si haciendo el tour de 3 días por lo general será capaz de recargar las baterías en la primera noche (3 horas de electricidad) y un poco en la segunda noche (24 de electricidad con un generador).
• Agua extra –  El tour proporciona solo durante las comidas. Una botella adicional de 2 litros por día.
• Crema solar  y sombrero – A mas  de 3.600 metros sobre el nivel del mar hay altos niveles de radiación ultravioleta del sol.
• Saco de dormir – Se puede alquilar en los hospedajes, pero es mejor llevar uno. Usted estará durmiendo hasta 4.300 metros las temperaturas pueden llevar a los -15ºC durante el invierno.
• Ropa de abrigo  – Llevar varias capas de ropa.
• Sandalias  – Los baños son compartidos.
• Traje de baño – Para las termas de Polques
• Papel higiénico – Los hostales en los servicios regulares son básicos.
• Toalla – No está disponible durante el tour.
• Snacks   – El alimento es adecuado en cantidad pero puede llevar algo adicional para entre las comidas.
• Crema labial – El sol y el viento y el aire seco los agrietan.
• Equipaje  – Por persona puede llevar  un bolso de mano  y una mochila o maleta.

INFORMACIÓN ADICIONAL 

Este itinerario está sujeto a cambios sin previo aviso según las condiciones climáticas, huelgas, bloqueos o eventos de fuerza mayor que estén fuera de nuestro control. Siempre haremos todo lo posible para seguir el itinerario lo más cerca posible. Durante la temporada de lluvias de enero a abril, el Salar de Uyuni se llenan de agua, por lo que no es posible cruzarlas de la misma manera que durante la estación seca. Como consecuencia, el itinerario se modifica durante ese período. Los principales cambios suelen ser los siguientes: En lugar de  dormir en en el hostal de Sal de Puerto Chuvica, hospedaremos en un hostal standard en  la ciudad de Uyuni, y desde allí ingresaremos al Salar hasta donde las condiciones lo permitan, si es posible visitaremos la Isla Inca Wasy. de otra manera  nos detenemos en un lugar donde el agua refleja el cielo y donde parece que el cielo y el suelo se funden en uno. Este viaje tiene lugar a muy alta altitud. los lugares están a mas de 3. 650  metros sobre el nivel del mar, y la mayoría de los huéspedes podrán sentir los efectos de la altura. Recomendamos aclimatarse a más de 2.000 metros antes del viaje y traer junto  medicación para dolores de cabeza y tabletas para el mal de altura en caso de que se sienta mal. Y recuerde, la verdadera clave es beber mucha agua y comer comidas livianas! Los  alojamientos  y hostales –  serán básicos, con  habitaciones compartidas,  dobles,  triples o cuádruples según disponibilidad , aunque están incluidas las mantas, sabanas y almohadas,  será un buena idea portar un saco de dormir, también se puede rentar uno en los hostales. La  electricidad y agua corriente son escasas. Las duchas solo estarán disponibles  en algunos hostales, y estas  pueden tener un pequeño costo local. Durante este servicio  están  en zonas remota donde usted estará lejos de las instalaciones cómodas y modernas y los servicios a veces será lento y bastante básico. Los Hoteles –   Son mas  confortables, las habitaciones pueden ser  matrimoniales, singles, dobles, triples  y cuádruples  según el requerimiento del pasajero y disponibilidad, estos cuentan por general cuentan con calefacción, ducha caliente, baños privado, cubiertas de plumas en las camas. De todas maneras tiene que considerar que  estará  durmiendo hasta 4.300 metros sobre el nivel del mar y dependiendo de la estación, las temperaturas pueden caer muy por debajo de cero (llegando a menos de -15 grados centígrados en los meses de invierno de junio y julio) y el frío del viento puede ser áspero, Un montón de ropa de abrigo como una bufanda y sombrero de lana para las noches frías. Cuando vuelva a su punto de partida, por favor traiga solamente el material y la ropa necesarios durante el viaje. Los vehículos –  Por lo general son Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4, los cuales no son nuevos, pero están en buenas condiciones. Debido al terreno áspero, las averías del vehículo no son infrecuentes, pero los conductores están muy acostumbrados arreglar las averías  y los tiempos de espera son raramente excesivos.   El conductor será al mismo tiempo su guía , el cual es un guía local de   habla  hispana. También puede solicitar este tour con guía en ingles de manera privada a [email protected] Dicho esto, con un poco de paciencia, preparación y predisposición ademas un espíritu por la aventura . seguro estamos que será algo inolvidable.

Salar de Uyuni Tour From San Pedro de Atacama

If you’ve come across the surreal photos taken on the endless white horizon that is Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni , then the Uyuni Salt Flat is probably on your bucket list.

That’s how it appeared on mine.

Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, 11,000 square kilometers of glistening white salt. The otherworldly landscape is like nothing I’ve ever seen before; a colorless horizon that appears to have no ending or beginning.

I knew I couldn’t I miss this destination while backpacking through South America . In January 2018, I embarked on a three-day Salar de Uyuni tour from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, and it was one of the most unforgettable travel experiences I’ve ever had.

Below, find my comprehensive guide to the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia based on my own experience, including how to get there, the best time to go and what to bring. This is everything you can expect from the Salar de Uyuni tour from San Pedro de Atacama.

How To Get To Salar de Uyuni

The Uyuni Salt Flat sits near the Bolivian city of Uyuni, from which several agencies offer one- to three-day tours. My boyfriend Guil and I knew from the get-go that we wanted to do a three-day tour to experience more of Bolivia’s countryside in addition of the salt flat.

These tours typically leave from Uyuni or Tupiza in Bolivia, as well as San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. Our original plan was to hop on a tour in Uyuni, but a canceled flight changed our travel plans and we ended up in Chile instead.

We began our journey in San Pedro de Atacama.

Starting The Salar de Uyuni Tour From San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

Several agencies offer the same tour across all three cities, so it’s not difficult to find one that fits your schedule. There’s really no need to book it ahead of time; you can book the tour after shopping around for the best agency once you’ve arrived at your starting point.

I actually ended up in San Pedro de Atacama “by accident” after a spur-of-the-moment change of plans, but I’m so glad I did. The small, sand-colored village sits in the middle of the Chilean desert, is teeming with adventure-seeking backpackers and has a real laidback vibe. San Pedro offers a number of outdoor activities that kept me busy before leaving on the salt flat tour, such as watching the sunrise from active geysers, visiting local mountain villages and hiking the area’s moon-like landscape.

The most popular tour offered in San Pedro de Atacama is the Uyuni Salt Falt tour. A variety of agencies offer the same tour, making it difficult to choose one. I thoroughly researched each tour company before settling on the one I felt most comfortable with. Considering we’d be spending the next three days completely off the grid in the middle of the Bolivian desert, I wanted to make sure we were in good hands.

Why Start in San Pedro de Atacama?

If you begin your tour in San Pedro like us, you’ll cross the Chile-Bolivia border with your tour group. I’ve heard this is one of the main reasons people choose to start their tour in Chile rather than Bolivia, as the border-crossing process is seamless and quite informal when you’re with the larger group. For us, there was an initial passport screening before we left San Pedro and an official crossing at the border 40 minutes later.

*Make sure to hold onto the immigration form you were given when you first entered Chile.

The other options are to start your tour from Uyuni or Tupiza. While I  didn’t visited Tupiza, my tour did end in Uyuni, and the town is pretty rundown. I’d say it’s probably not worth much of your time, and I wouldn’t recommend spending more than a night there.

How To Choose The Best Salar de Uyuni Tour Operator?

I was extra careful when choosing a tour company because I had spent hours reading awful reviews online about drunk tour guides and starving passengers — which made the Salar de Uyuni tour sound more like a horror movie than a grand adventure.

Guil and I probably sat with about five different agencies in San Pedro, and they all basically told us the same thing. All companies offer similar itineraries, transportation and accommodation. The tour prices are also all about the same.

I did learn, however, that only Bolivian companies are certified to operate the tour. This means that if you booked a tour with a Chilean agency in San Pedro, that agency will hand you over to a third-party Bolivian company once you cross the border to Bolivia.

I wasn’t comfortable with this idea because I wanted to see and get to know the tour operator I would actually be traveling with.

Also, I learned that sometimes the miscommunication between the Chilean agency and their Bolivian partner can lead to chaos, like drivers simply not showing up and leaving passengers stranded. Because of this, I decided to book directly with a Bolivian company. (For those starting the tour in Bolivia, you obviously won’t run into this issue.)

After reading a few great Trip Advisor reviews about a particular driver named Christopher with White & Green International Travel , we decided to book with them. Guil and I realized that the quality of our driver would basically determine the quality of our tour, so we requested Christopher before sealing the deal.

I made sure to ask the company owner if he had ever had problems with drunk drivers, and he seemed to have answered honestly, saying he’s had to fire drivers in the past but never due to alcohol. That helped me feel more at ease.

How Much Does The Salar de Uyuni Tour Cost?

There were two tour options to choose from: A three-day trip that ended in Uyuni or a four-day tour that brought us back to San Pedro. I chose to end the tour in Uyuni so I could continue on to La Paz from there.

A three-day, two-night tour starting in San Pedro de Atacama and ending in Uyuni cost me 110,000 Chilean pesos, or $180, a bit less than the four-day option. I paid in cash to avoid the credit card fees that most companies were charging.

The tour price was actually 10,000 Chilean pesos above the average price at the time, but I was OK with that considering the positive reviews I had read about the company.

The tour operator did ask us to bring an extra 150 Bolivianos ($22) on the trip to cover entrance fees as well as any other supplies we may need along the way.

Best Time To Visit Salar de Uyuni

The best time to visit Salar de Uyuni depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

Bolivia’s rainy season runs from December to April, and that’s when you have the best chance of seeing the salt flat’s so-called “mirror effect.” The rain leaves a thin film of water across the salt flat, creating an awing mirror effect with the sky reflecting off the white ground.

I experienced everything from rain to sunshine to snow during the three-day trip. It was January, summer time in South America, yet one night I experienced sub-zero temperatures and even witnessed flurries of snow falling while driving through the mountains.

During the day, the climate was warm and sunny, with a thirst-inducing dry desert heat, but since the tour takes place at such high altitudes, cooler air rolled in at night. We were told it actually snows along the route during winter, so prepare accordingly.

While the salt flat was wet when we were there, we unfortunately did not witness the mirror effect.

What to Pack for the Uyuni Salt Flat

Here are a few wardrobe tips for the Uyuni Salt Flat tour: Dress in layers, wear hiking shoes or comfortable walking shoes that you don’t mind getting extremely dirty, and always have a rain jacket or wind breaker with you.

Your backpack will be strapped onto the top of the car all day, so bring whatever you need with you in the car. You’ll only be able to access your bag in the evenings when you arrive at the hostel.

I kept the following essentials in my day pack at all times:

• Roll of toilet paper
• Hand sanitizer
• Hand lotion
• Paracetamol/Tylenol for headaches brought on by altitude sickness
• Rain jacket
• Comfortable shoes
• Laptop (I wanted to have it near me at all times for safety reasons.)
• Extra water

Most companies recommend you bring 6 gallons of water each. Guil and I brought 6 gallons for the both of us and purchased more water on the last day of the tour.

Salar de Uyuni Altitude

The tour takes place at an altitude ranging from 3,500 to nearly 5,000 meters (11,400 to 16,400 feet). That’s pretty high for someone like me, who was used to living below sea level in Miami.

Guil and I spent a few days in San Pedro at 2,400 meters (7,900 feet) to allow our bodies to acclimatize to the higher altitude. We were advised to drink coca tea, eat small meals, avoid red meat and liquor, and drink plenty of water. I also took a few paracetamols during the tour to ward off bad headaches.

Overall, neither of us suffered any severe side effects from the altitude change, but I felt a lot more comfortable taking the precautions I did.

Salar de Uyuni Tour Itinerary

The itinerary of each Salar de Uyuni tour depends on your starting point. I began mine in San Pedro, and this is what my three days in the desert looked like.

I was picked up at my hostel at 7 a.m., and we were off to the Bolivian border. There we had breakfast, got our passports stamped and were transferred to the 4×4 vehicle we’d be spending the next few days in, with four other people. In total, there were seven of us, including the driver.

The first stop on our tour was the Laguna Blanca followed by the Laguna Verde ; two beautiful lagoons surrounded by mountains.

Then we stopped at the Salvador Dalí Desert , also known as Dalí Valley , where we had more time to take photos. The landscape here looked like a painting.

After that we drove to a thermal bath in the middle of the desert, at which point we encountered other tour groups for the first time. Everyone changed into their bathing suits to take a dip in the warm natural pools.

We had lunch at a restaurant on site; each tour group is responsible for its own food, meaning our driver either carries the food in our Jeep or buys it along the way, and then our meals are cooked by locals at the small villages we stop at.

After a plentiful lunch, we headed to the Geiser Sol de la Manana , an area marked by intense volcanic activity. Here we walked among craters bubbling with boiling-hot mud, a landscape that is said to be similar to Mars.

This was the highest altitude we reached on the tour, close to 5,000 meters or 16,400 feet. We then drove over to our final stop of the day, the Laguna Colorada , a pink-colored lagoon home to hundreds of flamingos.

That night our group slept in a shared room in a hostel located within a small, seemingly abandoned village.

We woke up bright and early to breakfast at the hostel before heading to the nearby Valley of the Rocks , where several rock formations mirrored real-life objects like a World Cup trophy, a camel and a city made of hardened magma.

Then we headed to the breathtakingly beautiful Laguna Negra ; take a look at it below.

After we drove to a viewpoint of a deep canyon that is said to be reminiscent of the Grand Canyon.

Next was lunch, this time in another small village located within a picturesque field home to dozens of grazing llamas. After lunch, we drove through a few more villages, learning about their culture and customs.

While we weren’t supposed to enter the salt flat until day three, our driver took us there to watch the sunset. That night we slept in a pretty shoddy hostel next to the salt flat. Normally, the second night would be spent in a salt hotel — a building made of pure salt from the salt flat — but due to heavy rain, the hotel was inaccessible.

Our wake-up call was at 4:30 a.m. on the third day, early enough to catch the sunrise from the middle of the Uyuni Salt Flat.

We spent the entire morning taking photos and simply hanging out at one of the most unique places on earth. Breakfast was served in a large domed building in the middle of the salar, and several other tour groups joined.

On this day, tour groups traditionally visit an island in the middle of the salt flat, but due to it being rainy season, we couldn’t access the island.

Hours of photos later, we returned to Uyuni for one last meal: llama and quinoa.

For me, the tour ended here. The rest of our group however would spend another night in the desert before returning to San Pedro de Atacama, as they opted for the four-day round-trip tour. But for Guil and I, it was time to head off to our next adventure in La Paz.

TOUR SALAR DE UYUNI : San Pedro de Atacama – Salar de Uyuni

De San Pedro de Atacama al SALAR DE UYUNI: 4 días  de un viaje increíble

Como ya hemos puesto en el post anterior Cómo llegar al Salar de Uyuni , tras mucho pensar e investigar, decidimos hacer el Tour 4 días/ 3 noches para ir desde San Pedro de Atacama  (Chile) al Salar de Uyuni (escríbenos un mensaje privado por Instagram a @pasaporteymillas si estás interesado en contactar con la empresa). Contactamos con ellos dos semanas antes del viaje y le hicimos la transferencia de 235 dólares por persona . No hubo ningún problema y todo salió perfecto.

Antes de explicaros en qué consiste el viaje os dejamos aquí unas recomendaciones que os serán de gran ayuda.

Qué saber antes de ir al Salar de Uyuni desde San Pedro de Atacama

1. Llevar bastante agua , por lo menos 2 litros por día.

2. Un saco de dormir para la primera noche en un refugio en Laguna Colorada.

3. Ropa de abrigo. Lleva la típica ropa que te llevarías a la montaña: Calzado cómodo (no hace falta que sea GoreTex), pantalón de trekking, jersey y un buen abrigo para por la noche. Durante el día, como hay sol, se está bien hasta en manga corta.

4. Crema solar y gafas de sol.

5. Dinero en efectivo . Aunque todos los grandes gastos están incluidos, lleva algo de dinero para:

• La entrada a los parques nacionales:  24 euros por persona. 150 bolivianos la entrada a la Reserva Nacional Eduardo Abaroa, donde se entra el primer día, y 30 bolivianos la entrada a La Isla del Pescado en el Salar de Uyuni). Nota: 1 euro = 8 Bolivianos.
• Propina a los chófers . Cada uno da lo que quiere. Nosotros dimos 5 dólares al de la ida y otros 5 al de la vuelta.
• Souvenirs, agua, bebida y comida. En principio   no es necesario comprar nada. No hay prácticamente nada en el camino solo algún poblado entre medias para comprar algo básico o algún recuerdo.
• A la vuelta del viaje, en la aduana de Bolivia ,  nos obligaron a pagar 15 dólares a cada uno si queríamos abandonar el país… La verdad que parecía algo ilegal, pero atrévete tú a decir algo a 4 tíos con metralleta en un país que no es el tuyo.

6. Mal de altura: La Puna o el mal de altura en el camino al Salar de Uyuni suele preocupar mucho a la gente. Con razón, porque si te da te puede fastidiar el viaje completo. No se puede asegurar al 100% que no te vaya a dar algo, pero no conozco a nadie que, siguiendo estos consejos, haya tenido puna o mal de altura en Uyuni:

Nota: Para el que no lo sepa, el mal de altura, soroche o puna, se produce porque el cuerpo no se acostumbra,  en tan breve periodo de tiempo, a la disminución de oxígeno que se experimenta en altitudes elevadas. Se empeora lógicamente si se sube muy rápido. Los síntomas más claros son: el dolor de cabeza, los mareos, náuseas, agotamiento físico y taquicardias.

• Lo primero que hay que saber es que el punto más crítico para que te suceda es cuando te acercas a la frontera de Chile con Bolivia, pues está a una altura de 4.400 msnm .
• No somos muy amigos de las medicinas, pero si puedes conseguir Sorojchi Pills por si acaso, perfecto, pues es un medicamento (ácido acetilsalicílico + cafeína + salófeno) que ayuda a mejorar el riego sanguíneo al cerebro y te aseguraría de eliminar todos los síntomas del mal de altura en tu camino hacia el Salar de Uyuni.
• Nosotros nos tomamos media aspirina justo al subirnos al minibús que te acerca a la frontera (tal vez sea excesivo, pero íbamos con miedo porque en la anterior visita en Atacama lo pasamos mal). Se suele decir que hace la sangre más líquida, pero la realidad es que lo que hace es evitar que la sangre coagule y que te duela la cabeza.
• Masca hoja de coca (se compra allí en cualquier parte) o chupa caramelos de coca que es menos raro.
• Bebe abundante agua , y constantemente, en sorbos pequeños.
• Respira muy profundamente , aguantando un poco la respiración antes de exhalar.
• Aunque será difícil, intenta n o beber alcohol 48 horas antes .
• En el día anterior, evita comer carnes rojas , comidas pesadas o con exceso de sal. Come algo con carbohidratos (pastas, panes, arroz) y verduras cocidas.
• Evita correr o hacer grandes esfuerzos , e intenta descansar bien.

Esto es la teoría claro. Hay que confesar que nosotros comimos y bebimos lo que quisimos y lo único que cumplimos fue lo de la aspirina, respirar profundo y beber mucha agua. De esta forma no tuvimos ningún problema con el mal de altura a lo largo del camino al Salar de Uyuni.

SALAR DE UYUNI – 4 días y 3 noches

Día  1.-   san pedro de atacama- laguna colorada.

Salida desde San Pedro de Atacama a las 08:00 hrs. en mini bus hasta la frontera de Bolivia, pasando por la inmigración de Chile y Bolivia. Una vez en la frontera de Bolivia a una altura de 4.400 m.s.n.m., se realiza el cambio de vehículo a un jeep con capacidad de 6 pax.

En nuestro Jeep solamente íbamos 4 pasajeros más el conductor.

Continuamos por el altiplano boliviano hasta llegar a la primera parada, l a laguna Verde y laguna Blanca situados al pie del volcán Licancabur .

Después de media hora de parada continuamos por el Desierto de Daly hasta la segunda parada del día: unas piscinas de aguas termales en las que te puedes bañar si quieres. Así que mete el bañador en la mochila por si te entran ganas!

Tras otra media hora continuamos hasta llegar a los Geysers del Sol de Mañana y fumarolas , grietas por donde sale lava volcánica.

La última parada de este primer día fue la laguna Colorada , centro principal de anidación de más de 30.000 flamencos de 3 especies. Está a una altitud de 4.500 m.s.n.m. y es probable que a alguien del grupo le entre mal de altura, le sangre la nariz o se le sequen los labios y la piel debido a la sequedad del ambiente. Pasamos la noche en un albergue

NOTA IMPORTANTE: Llevar saco de dormir para esta primera noche. Se duerme en camas y en habitaciones compartidas. Normalmente te tocará compartir con la gente que vaya en tu mismo jeep. El sitio es decente y fuera de lujos. Tenía duchas y baños y nos dieron muy bien de comer.

DÍA 2.- Laguna Colorada- San Juan

Después de una dura noche por culpa de la altura y la sequedad (no tuvimos mal de altura pero hacía difícil conciliar el sueño) salimos a las 08,00 hrs dirección al desierto de Siloli. Desierto que se caracteriza por el conjunto de formaciones rocosas curiosas debido a la erosión eólica.

Seguimos por las lagunas altiplánicas , también conocidas como lagunas de colores: Laguna Honda, Chiarcota y cañapa. Entre medias,  parada en el pequeño salar de Chiguana hasta llegar al pueblo de San Juan. En este pueblo se pasa la noche en el Hotel de SAL y en una habitación matrimonial.  Este hotel fue el mejor de todo el tour. Buenos baños y duchas, cena rica con vino incluido y excelente habitación.

Ya quedaba menos para llegar!!

DÍA 3.- San Juan- SALAR DE UYUNI-Villa Mar

Salimos a las 06:00 de la mañana para llegar al Salar de Uyuni justo antes de que saliera el sol. La verdad que una vez allí es absolutamente increíble y todo el esfuerzo hecho merece la pena. No hay palabras para describirlo:

Después de ver el amanecer y estar un rato más para hacer fotos, nos dirigimos a la Isla Inca Huasi o isla Pescado. Se trata de una isla que está en el centro del salar, formada por rocas calcáreas con restos de corales y conchas marinas . La entrada a la isla son 30 bolivianos, unos 4 euros.

Tras recorrer una hora la isla, desayunamos tranquilamente en el salar. La siguiente parada era el monumento al Dakar.

Cuando ya estábamos suficientemente satisfechos del Salar de Uyuni, nos llevaron a un antiguo cementerio de trenes que hay cerca del pueblo de Uyuni (parecía una película).

Estuvimos jugando por los trenes durante dos horas y nos fuimos a comer carne de llama con quinoa de la zona.

Después de comer, tras despedirnos de la gente que se iba hacia La Paz, iniciamos el camino de vuelta en el jeep hasta el pueblo de Villa Mar, donde pasamos la tercera noche en un hostal del mismo nombre.

DÍA 4.- Villa Mar- SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA

Salimos desde Villa Mar a las 05: 00 hrs. a.m. dirección a la frontera de Bolivia en viaje de 04 hrs sin parar. A las 9:00 hrs pasamos el control en la inmigración boliviana (dónde nos obligaron a pagar 15 dólares para salir del país). Aquí nos despedimos de nuestro chófer y, al igual que a la ida, regresamos en minibús. Llegamos a San Pedro de Atacama a las 13:00 hrs.

  CONCLUSIONES TOUR AL SALAR DE UYUNI – Desde San Pedro de Atacama (Chile) –

Es un viaje que está muy bien organizado. Tiene las comodidades básicas  cubiertas: alojamiento, duchas, baños, comida, etc.

Es importante que os digamos que los alojamientos incluidos en este tour son de mochileros auténticos . Cero comodidad de las camas y los refugios son cutrecillos en los que hace mucho frío por la noche. Hay que reconocer que se hace bastante duro, con muchas horas de coche y en condiciones casi extremas por la altitud, la sequedad y los cambios de temperatura.

Pese a todo esto, lo cierto es que a día de hoy, el tour al Salar de Uyuni fue uno de los viajes más completos que hemos hecho en nuestra vida. Merece mucho la pena el esfuerzo, no solo por los paisajes increíbles que vas a ver, sino también por los amigos y la gente interesante que se puede llegar a conocer.

Es muy importante realizar una buena aclimatación a la altura antes de comenzar el tour, ya que el tour discurre por zonas de mucha altitud.

🚨 Este tour incluye dos cruces de fronteras para acceder a Bolivia. La normativa de acceso puede cambiar, y solicitamos a los viajeros que se aseguren de cumplir los requisitos de acceso al país tanto a nivel sanitario como migratorio (visados). 🕗 Durante la temporada de lluvias (enero-marzo) el horario de finalización puede retrasarse considerablemente, por lo que recomendamos no tomar ningún transporte o vuelo a otro lugar para ese mismo día. El itinerario puede variar en condiciones climáticas adversas o por causas de fuerza mayor para garantizar la seguridad de los viajeros. En caso de no ser posible acceder a la isla Incahuasi se sustituirá la visita por la vista del atardecer en el salar.

San Pedro de Atacama

El tour al Salar de Uyuni desde San Pedro de Atacama empieza a las 7:00 con la recogida en tu alojamiento. Una vez reunido todo el grupo en el minibús, pondrás rumbo hasta la frontera con Bolivia. Aquí conocerás a tu conductor del 4x4 con el que vivirás esta aventura, mientras sellas pasaportes y desayunas, él cargará todos los equipajes. ¡Comienza la aventura!

Laguna Blanca y Laguna Verde

Al acceder a Bolivia te adentrarás directamente en la Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Avaroa , donde harás la mayoría de paradas del día. La primera visita es en la Laguna Blanca, situada a los pies del volcán Licancabur y en nuestra opinión una de las más bonitas que veremos durante estos 3 días. Continuarás con una parada en Laguna Verde y atravesarás el Desierto Salvador Dalí, una gran planicie altiplánica rodeada de imponentes montañas que te recordarán a las pinturas del famoso pintor.

Termas de Polque - Géiseres

El camino sigue hasta las Termas de Polque , donde disfrutarás de un baño en agua termal natural mientras en el exterior la temperatura es muy baja. ¡Disfruta de esta experiencia tan relajante!

Y para seguir disfrutando de este lugar, almorzarás con todo el grupo a pocos metros de las termas con unas vistas panorámicas al paisaje que las rodea. Seguimos adelante hasta el campo de Géiseres Sol de la Mañana , lleno de fumarolas y pequeños géiseres.

Laguna Colorada

Por último, llegarás a la Laguna Colorada , la más conocida y fotografiada por los viajeros. Caminarás por un sendero paralelo a la orilla de la laguna para verla de cerca y observar la inmensa colonia de flamencos que habitan en ella. A continuación te dirigirás a Villa Mar, donde cenarás con tu grupo y pasarás la noche en habitación compartida o privada, según tu elección durante la reserva.

DÍA 2 Villa Mar - Valle de las Rocas - Hotel de Sal en Colcha K

Valle de las Rocas e Italia Perdida

Después del desayuno, visitarás dos zonas conocidas por sus formaciones rocosas, son el Valle de las Rocas e Italia perdida , cada vez más conocida entre los viajeros por las formas caprichosas de sus rocas, especialmente El Camello.

Laguna Negra

Se acerca la hora del almuerzo, y mientras caminamos por los alrededores de la última laguna que visitarás en el tour, la laguna Negra o laguna escondida. Además en esta zona es muy común encontrar llamas en el pequeño valle verde que lleva hasta la laguna. Mientras, el conductor te preparará el almuerzo y a la 1 llegará el momento de almorzar todos juntos en vuestro “restaurante rodante”. 

Cañón de la anaconda y humedal de Sora 

Continuarás la ruta hasta el cañón de la Anaconda, que te muestra la inmensidad del altiplano boliviano, con su río retorciéndose en el fondo del valle. Para verlo totalmente hay que acercarse a unos miradores, que no suelen gustar mucho a los viajeros con vértigo, por ello se quedan un poco más atrás. De camino a tu alojamiento, pasarás por el bofedal (humedal de altura) de Sora, donde verás llamas, vicuñas e incluso algunos zorros.

Regreso al alojamiento

Después de dos días en ruta, se agradece siempre una parada en este lugar, una tienda local donde podrás tomar unas cervezas (las hay hasta hechas de quinoa) y si la tecnología lo permite podrás conectarte a su Wi-Fi. Al atardecer llegarás al mejor hotel de sal que hay en la zona, Hotel de Sal Tambo Loma, donde cenarás con vistas al altiplano y descansarás en habitaciones hechas íntegramente de sal.

BONUS CONFORT HOWLANDERS💙

El tour al Salar de Uyuni desde San Pedro de Atacama de Howlanders incluye un extra de confort para la segunda noche. Este día te alojarás en uno de los mejores hoteles de sal de la zona: El Hotel Tambo Loma, y tendrás habitación privada con baño privado , aunque reserves la opción en habitación compartida.

Recuerda que si quieres disfrutar del confort de la habitación privada las dos noches, tendrás que reservar el tour con la opción HABITACIÓN PRIVADA.

¡Hoy toca madrugar! El amanecer no espera, así que a las 5:00 de la mañana pondrás rumbo al Salar de Uyuni . Ponte cómodo, abrígate mucho y espera unos minutos para vivir uno de los amaneceres más mágicos del mundo.

Isla Incahuasi 🌵

Seguirás explorando el salar y toca visitar la Isla de Incahuasi . Este lugar alberga un ecosistema único repleto de cactus gigantes y que, gracias a su elevación, se convierte en uno de los mejores puntos para disfrutar de las vistas y tomar más fotografías del Salar de Uyuni. Ten en cuenta que durante la temporada de lluvias puede que no sea accesible si está muy inundada la zona, pero a cambio disfrutarás del “efecto espejo” en el salar, la naturaleza es así. 

Desayunarás a los pies de la isla con vistas a la inmensidad del salar. Recogerás y pondrás rumbo a la siguiente parada: sesión de fotos en el Salar de Uyuni.

Salar de Uyuni - Colchani 

Te adentrarás en el salar, en temporada de lluvias (enero – marzo) nos dirigirás a la parte inundada para ver el surrealista efecto espejo. En temporada seca te ubicarás en el centro del salar para tomar unas fotos increíbles, porque además de llevarte a todos los rincones y cocinarte durante la ruta, el chofer también te ayudará con las fotos. ¡Este hombre sirve para todo!

Monumento Dakar - Isla de las Banderas

De camino a Colchaniharás las últimas paradas dentro del salar en la escultura del Dakar y la famosa isla de las banderas . Al llegar a Colchani tendrás un rato libre para comprar algo de artesanía local. Si quieres llevarte a casa algún recuerdo, este es el mejor momento para comprarlo.

Almuerzo en Uyuni pueblo y cementerio de trenes

Han sido dos días almorzando en el “restaurante rodante” y hoy no cocina el chofer, sino que almorzarás con tu grupo en un restaurante de Uyuni pueblo. Harás la última parada del tour en el cementerio de trenes , una zona donde descansan a su suerte los restos de lo que un día fue símbolo del desarrollo boliviano. Te despedirás del grupo y darás por acabado el tour al Salar de Uyuni desde San Pedro de Atacama.

El tour comienza en San Pedro de Atacama. Si llegas a San Pedro de Atacama desde Santiago de Chile la opción más recomendable es hacerlo en avión directo hasta Calama. En Howlanders también puedes reservar el traslado privado entre el aeropuerto de Calama y San Pedro . 

Si llegas desde Perú lo más probable es que lo hagas desde Cuzco o Arequipa. En este caso te recomendamos viajar en un bus que cruce por la frontera Arica-Tacna y te lleve posteriormente hasta San Pedro de Atacama, aunque es una combinación un poco compleja, ya que es necesario combinar varios autobuses.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿cómo son los hostales.

En nuestro tour, el alojamiento de Sal tiene una calidad superior al resto de los alojamientos de la zona, además siempre te asignarán una habitación privada. El alojamiento en Villa Mar es ligeramente más básico, ya que en la zona no hay alojamientos de mayor calidad. Ambos alojamientos disponen de agua caliente y calefacción solo en zonas comunes, aunque quizás no llegue al nivel de confort que desean todos los viajeros, en ese caso te recomendamos reservar el tour en hoteles. Hay que tener en cuenta que este tour es una expedición a una zona muy despoblada y económicamente poco desarrollada.

¿Cuáles son las diferencias entre habitación compartida y privada en los hostales?

La habitación compartida tiene entre 3 y 6 camas que son ocupadas por otros viajeros. Asimismo, el baño es compartido con otras habitaciones. La ducha de agua caliente en la primera noche tiene un coste de 10 bolivianos. Por su parte, la habitación privada dispone de baño privado con ducha de agua caliente durante las dos noches y no se comparte con otros viajeros.

¿Cómo son los vehículos en los que se realiza el tour?

Puedes llevar todo el equipaje que necesites, ya que este tour no regresa a San Pedro, pero es recomendable que el peso de tu equipaje no exceda los 18 kilogramos. El bulto se ubicará en el techo del 4x4, protegido por un aislante impermeable. Recomendamos llevar una pequeña mochila para la cámara de fotos, agua, snacks, etc. A los artículos ubicados en el techo sólo se podrá acceder al llegar al alojamiento.
