Flex Option

AD DI 6 & 7 flex

The first difference between the AD DI 6 and 7 shafts is the choice of flex. AD DI 6 offers three different types of flex; Regular, Stiff, and X-Stiff and AD DI 7 has two flex options: Stiff and X-Stiff.

The quicker your swing, the stronger the flex you require, as golf shafts bend according to how quick your club speed is. So, you should select the shaft based on the sort of swing you have.

AD DI 6 is required if you desire regular flex, which means you have a slower swing speed. However, you can pick either of the shafts if you need stiff or X-stiff.

Weight

Another common difference between these two shafts is the different weight options they offer.

The AD DI 6 shaft has lower weight options; of 64, 65, 67, and 68.5 grams, and the AD DI 7 shaft has comparatively higher weight options of 74, 75, and 77 grams.

Your swing path is improved with a heavier shaft and you use more muscle when you play with a heavier shaft.

There are Mid High launch angle choices for both AD DI 6 and AD DI 7. The Mid choice will keep the ball somewhat lower off the tee, while the Mid-High option will help gain a bit extra height underneath the ball.

However, the AD DI 6 also has a High option. While the AD DI 7 has a Mid option. Conversely, a high launch driver enables golfers with slower swings to produce soaring shots for maximal carry distance. 

Therefore, you may choose the shaft that is best for you based on where you want the impact to be.

Spin

Spin is another important consideration while selecting the shaft. Different shafts offer different types of spin, and the same goes between AD DI 6 and AD DI 7. 

The AD DI 6 shaft offers two different spin options; Low Mid and Low, and the AD DI 7 shaft offers low spin only. The low mid spin has a slightly higher spin than the low spin. 

Generally, a low-spin driver can lower your spin rates resulting in a more piercing launching if your swing speed is quick and your ball rises in the air.

A machine that measures shaft torque tracks how much a shaft will twist in response to a specific quantity of force and does so in degrees. 

Depending on what type of flex you choose, these two shafts also have a difference in torque. 

Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7 has torque in the range of 3.1-3.2 degrees compared to the 3.3-3.4 degrees of the AD DI 6 shaft. So, when playing shot, the AD DI 7 will have less twisting than the AD DI 6.

We usually try to reserve judgment of a shaft until later in the review.

But this time, we’re breaking character by claiming in the introduction that the Graphite Design Tour AD DI is a truly remarkable shaft.

We’ll reserve the details for later in the review but we will say that we can clearly see why some of the most prolific Tour Pros game these shafts.

If you haven’t considered the Graphite Design Tour AD DI shaft for your woods you need to read this review and then go get a fitting.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft Overview

Let’s start with looks.

It appears as though Graphite design puts all their time and effort into engineering and saves money on their design department.

The shaft, which is available in a black or orange color scheme, looks busy. The midsection is lousy with logos and lettering.

We prefer the black and white finish to the gaudy orange and white color scheme.

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI is available in a dizzying array of weights and flexes.

The weight ranges from 54g to 97g. Graphite Design seemingly wanted to appeal to as many golfers as possible and they have succeeded.

No matter what your swing speed is, you can pick up a Graphite Design Tour AD DI shaft in a weight that works for you.

The feel of this shaft is definitely active. The kick point is advertised as mid; but we would actually say that it is a bit closer to the butt than true mid.

Why is the  Graphite Design Tour AD DI So Popular?

When a shaft is used by players like Tiger Woods, it’s going to get some attention.

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI has been used by some of the biggest names in golf; but there are weights and flexes for us mortals too.

How Does the Graphite Design Tour AD DI Perform?

Depending on which weight class you choose, you’re either going to get a high or mid launch from this shaft.

The amazing thing about it though is that even the lightest version of the Graphite Design Tour AD DI can produce low spin rates.

In our test session, we never saw the spin rates exceed 2000 RPM’s. For the most part, spin was relegated to the 1800-1900 RPM range.

The stiff tip section also kept dispersion very tight. Our offline divergence never drifted into the double-digit (yards) range.

Carry distance was good too. After three swings each, we were averaging 268.8 yards. The Graphite Design Tour AD DI ticked nearly all of the boxes for us.

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

Lite flex is suitable for 71-85 MPH swingers.

Regular flex is good for 86-95 MPH swingers. Players in the 92-98 MPH range should check out the Graphite Design Tour AD DI in stiff/regular flex.

Stiff flex may be suitable for players in the 96-105 MPH range. Extra stiff is for players in the 100-105 MPH range. Tour extra stiff should work for players swinging their driver 110+ MPH.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI is available in a wide variety of weights.

If you’re in the 70-85 MPH swing speed range, you’re probably going to want to stay between 54 and 64 grams.

86-95 MPH swingers will want to stay within the 75-85 gram weight class. For 96+ MPH swingers, there is the 86-97 gram weight class.

Our first impression of the Graphite Design Tour AD DI was that it felt very smooth.

While we wouldn’t say it is as smooth as the Mitsubishi Tensei shafts, it is still amazingly fluid for having such an active profile.

Key Features & Performance

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI utilizes aerospace-grade, high modulus 50-ton carbon fiber in order to stiffen the tip section.

While the mid and butt sections are of medium stiffness, the tip is stiff in order to promote acute club head control.

This is part of what produces such tight shot dispersion.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Driver Review

When plugged into our driver, the Graphite Design Tour AD DI felt incredibly easy and smooth to swing.

It can stand up to a really heavy load and the release feels phenomenally fluid. The dispersion is tight enough to keep you out of the trees but there is also some workability for better players.

When we plugged the Graphite Design Tour AD DI into a 3-wood, we still got tight dispersion whether we were swinging from the box or off the deck.

Shaft Test: Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP versus the famous Tour AD-DI

With a similar profile to the company’s famous Tour AD-DI shaft, and a few new technologies for a slightly different ball flight, Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP shaft will surely entice a legion of high-spin golfers.

The new shafts are made for a mid launch and low spin rates, according to Graphite Design’s website, while the Tour AD-DI shafts are made for mid/high to high launch angles and low to low/mid spin rates. Certainly, they are in the same wheelhouse, but for anyone looking to create a slightly more penetrating ball flight with lower launch and lower spin, the new shaft could be their winning ticket.

To accomplish its performance, the AD-TP shafts are made with a faster taper rate from the lower-mid section to the tip of the shaft, and use an all-new graphite material from Toray Industries called T1100G carbon fiber pre-preg. They also use Toray’s Nanoalloy technology in the tip section, which was first introduced in Graphite Design’s Tour AD-DI. It help golfers gain more control of the club face by resisting torque.  Read more about the Tour AD-TP shaft’s tech here .

And here’s how the Tour AD-TP shafts stack up versus the other Tour AD shafts:

As you can see, the Tour AD-TP (top row) compared to the Tour AD-DI (bottom row) will have a firmer mid and butt section, but will also have the familiar stiff tip section.

Personally, I’ve tested just about every new mainstream driver shaft that’s come out in the past three years, and I just haven’t been able to find something that matches my swing like the Tour AD-DI. As a golfer who fights a nasty hook and too much spin, it’s the stiffness and stability of the tip of the shaft that makes me comfortable enough to “go at it.” I’m also a Mets fan, so I like the orange color.

But for whatever reason, my golfing brain finds other shafts to load and unload way differently, either forcing me to flip or block drives, leading to tragic results. So although I often test the latest and greatest golf shafts for you, the GolfWRX readers, I’ve all but given up on other shafts making it into my gamer driver. Yes, other shafts have given me “more optimal” numbers in a Trackman environment, but there’s nothing optimal about feeling like you’re going to duck hook the ball off the planet with OB stakes left.

When Graphite Design announced a new shaft with a similar profile that’s made to create a slightly more penetrating trajectory, however, I’ll admit I was excited to try it. Let’s see how the numbers played out.

The Numbers

I tested my Tour AD-DI gamer shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) against a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, untipped) and a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) in a TaylorMade M1 460 head (10.5 degrees) set to neutral. Yes, I have a bit more swing speed in the tank than displayed below, but it’s also late October and I don’t want to have a blown out back all winter. I conducted my testing at the Launch Pad at Carl’s Golfland on TrackMan 4 using premium golf balls.

Observations

— Shots with the un-tipped shaft trended to the right. It felt like the face was opening on the downswing and I couldn’t turn my shots over. The data solidifies for me that performance matches my feel, and that I do indeed need a tipped shaft.

— The AD-DI shaft had the highest spin (2953 rpm), highest landing angle, most height (122.1 feet) and launched the highest (13.7 degrees).

— The AD-TP (tipped 1 inch) carried 4.9 yards shorter than the Tour AD-DI, but went 3.7 yards longer in total. This shows how much more penetrating the ball flight with a AD-TP shaft can be.

— Spin rate dropped from 2953 rpm with the Tour AD-DI (tipped 1 inch) to 2460 rpm with the AD-TP (tipped 1 inch).

— With nearly identical clubhead speed, ball speed and smash factors, it’s clear the Tour AD-TP was offering better numbers and tighter dispersion for me.

The Takeaway

The Graphite Design Tour AD-TP shaft is currently selling for $500 at retail. Based on the improvement I saw in my numbers, I would say that the new shaft is worth the value for my swing. The profile and new materials are a match for me in regards to ball flight characteristics and feel. I would describe the feel as “smooth-stiff, with a stable tip.”

Of course, it’s important to undergo a proper fitting, as you saw that the un-tipped version of the Tour AD-GP shaft was giving me fits. But, if you’re like me and struggle with high spin rates and inconsistency, the Tour AD-TP shaft may help you find more accuracy… and a bit more distance, too.

Andrew, the author of this review, comments about hitting duck hooks because that is his miss when he uses a shaft that doesn’t “fit” his swing style. It is the same issue I fight. The fact he has peppered the right side of the grid would be comforting for him. All in all, Andrew fits the new TP shaft pretty well.

Some shafts get progressively weaker to the tip (Rogue, AD-DI), many increase stiffness into the tip (most other GD tour AD models, Kuro Kage) To assume all shafts need to be tipped just seems uninformed. Tipping off stiffness in a shaft like a AD-BB is just going to lower the kick point and give you a softer tip; exact opposite of tipping a AD-DI.

Wow the author tried really hard to say this is better. The chart looks pretty much the same for all three shafts as far as landing zone. Just one leftward (I’m guess more of a hook) shot skewed the oval left. Unless he’s a left hander, none of his shots were hooks, rather either push or slices. Strange for him to say that he’s fighting a hook when he didn’t hit any.

The real difference does seem to be one offering more roll and one more carry due to launch angle changes I’m guessing due to the stiffer mid and butt sections. Worth it? The argument seems a bit thin.

At the top end of the bag, Clark is set to change into Titleist’s new GT2 driver during the first week it’s being made available to PGA TOUR players. On Monday, Titleist officially unveiled its new lineup of GT drivers and fairway woods, and Clark plans to become one of the early adopters of the new technology as competition begins on Thursday at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Interestingly, Clark was relatively late to make a permanent switch into the company’s previous TSR3 driver. Although the TSR drivers first launched in 2022, Clark was back-and-forth with the 2020 TSi3 driver and the 2022 TSR3 driver until the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2024.

On Wednesday, GolfWRX.com caught up with Clark to get his take on the new GT2 driver, and why he’s switching so quickly.

“It’s faster (than my previous TSR3),” Clark said. “I felt like I got 2-3 mph more ball speed, which is amazing. And it has really consistent spin, which is obviously huge for what we do out here.”

…On the bottom end of the bag, Clark will likely play his first event since 2023 without an Odyssey Jailbird putter in the bag.

The first similarity between AA and BB is their color options. Both offer two different color options which are orange and black. While this is not a big deal, color options are still good to keep in mind when picking a shaft.

Flex: AD DI 6 vs AD DI 7

The first difference between AA and BBis in their flex options. Both offer stiff and extra stiff options, but the AA also offers regular flex. For those that don’t know, regular flex is better for golfers who have slower swing speeds. It gives them the optimal amount of band. So, for those with slower swing speeds AAA will be much better.

Length: AD DI 6 vs AD DI 7

In terms of length, there aren’t many differences. Both are 46 inches long which is actually considered long compared to the industry standard. Believe it or not, the USGA has a limit on the length a shaft can be. This limit is 46 inches . If a golf shaft is longer than 46 inches it is considered illegal.

Weight: AD DI 6 vs AD DI 7

The weight is another area of difference between these two shafts. The BB is anywhere from 5.5 grams to 13 grams heavier than the AA. This weight difference will impact performance. Heavier golf shafts like the BB, are harder to swing but easier to control. The AA will be easier to swing fast but a bit harder to control.

Launch: AD DI 6 vs AD DI 7

Both the AA and BB have High launch angle options, but the AA has an additional Mid-High option and the BB has an additional BB option. The Mid-High option will help get a bit more height under the ball off of the tee and the Mid option will keep the ball a bit lower off the tee in comparison.

Spin: AD DI 6 vs AD DI 7

In terms of spin options, the BB has a low option and the AA has a low and mid option. Depending on what you normally use or what you are looking for this may impact your decision. Mid spin will allow the shaft to help generate some spin on the ball, so if this is what you are looking for, then it would be better to go for the BB.

USGA Legal: AD DI 6 vs AD DI 7

If you are looking to use one of these shafts, it is important to know whether or not they are legal. The USGA has very strict equipment rules , which even apply to golf shafts. According to the USGA, both the AD DI 6 and AD DI 7 are legal to use in any casual, high level amateur or professional golf outings.

Get Up to Date on Graphite Design

How Does it Feel?  A Quick Review

For those of you who’ve not hit the Tour AD DI, what are you waiting for?  It’s one of Graphite Design’s most versatile and playable shafts.  They describe it as a high-launch, low-spin shaft, which is often the perfect blend of characteristics to hit some enormous bombs.  Add to that, it’s a very stable, consistent, and responsive shaft.  You always know where the club head is in your swing.  I happen to think that the AD DI is a very FUN shaft to use as well.  It feels great, you know when you crush it, and it will remind you (but not yell at you) when you don’t.  Those are just some of the reasons that folks have been bagging this shaft for years.

What’s New With the Tour AD DI?

Graphite Design’s line of shafts often feature solid, bold colors, with a ring pattern near the handle.  When you see your favorite pro on television, you can immediately tell when they’re using a Graphite Design product.  When you get paired up with a random single with a Graphite Design shaft, you can just about guarantee they take their golf seriously.

The Tour AD DI may be the most recognizable of the line, with its eye popping orange and white color scheme.  While it’s a smart marketing move to choose such a vibrant color, it flat out performs for players of all levels.  When you combine the two, you build a loyal following and the shaft stays in people’s bags for a long time.

The original AD DI has been on the market for about ten years now.  In my opinion, the classic text and graphics will always look cool.  However, I will say some of the recently released models like the high launching AD IZ and the fabulous low-mid launch AD XC look amazing with their new graphics.  In these shafts, the “Tour AD” and Graphite Design logos got an upgrade to bigger, bolder letters and outlines.  It’s kind of an Art Deco font, and I’m particularly drawn to it.

The AD DI remains a huge seller, so it only made sense to give it a makeover!  They kept the same vibrant orange and added the updated logos.  What I like is that they kept the super subtle green accents on the rings and they left the glossy finish.  My opinion is that glossy is a bit more durable than a matte finish, and more true to the original.  Check the pics, we want you to be able to get a good look at the traditional version as well as the new look!

Final Thoughts – New Graphics Tour AD DI

With the way golf companies have improved manufacturing technique and introduced new materials, how wild is it that a shaft like the AD DI remains so relevant?  A great design and a great look have a lot to do with it, that’s for sure.  With a refreshed look, the Graphite Design Tour AD DI will surely find its way into professionals and serious amateur’s bags for years to come!

REVIEW: Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft

This shaft was available for some time, at least to tour players, but didn’t really makes its splash until TW put it in play for his first tournament back after his 5 month indiscretion induced vacation.  While Tiger didn’t win the tournament, he had decent driving statistics for that week.

But again, just because a big name player put this shaft in play, doesn’t mean the rest of us can hit it.  This shaft however will appeal to many players, both low handicaps and even higher handicaps.  It is not a super low launch, no spin shaft that most golfers can’t get off the ground, but this is a mid/high launch shaft with low spin.  

So some of the basics; it is an orange and white shaft with just a touch of Irish green on the bands.  It comes in a number of different weight and flex options.  I did the DI-7s in an I-mix tip.  Now typically I play a stiff flex, but Graphite designs shafts always seem to run a touch soft, so I tipped mine an extra ½”.  It worked out very well. 

One area that Graphite design has always been known for is their incredibly smooth feeling.  The DI was no different.  It has a great controlled smooth feeling from start to finish.  There was no whippy feeling or loose feeling, but not even a touch of boardiness.  It just felt like you knew where the shaft was and what it was doing for the entire swing.

On the course I found this to be long and straight with highball flight yet low spin for roll out.  I had great confidence in this shaft and it resulted in long accurate drives.

Graphite Design set the bar high with the name, and delivered excellent results.  This really does have deep impact on the ball and where it lands so far down the fairway.

Tip Prepping - $2.95

Shafts are tip trimmed (if required) to manufacturer’s recommendations. For steel shafts, we abrade the tips. For graphite shafts, we remove the polyurethane coating. When you receive your shaft, all you need to do is mix epoxy, install and align. After the epoxy is cured, cut to your final playing length from the butt end and install the grip.

The Graphite Design Tour AD VR shaft creates a stable feel with a profile that’s the opposite of what you would expect.  Modest, smooth kick feels like it’s giving your swing speed a boost.

Introduction

At a glance, the names of Graphite Design’s shafts seem bland.  When you realize they’re acronyms, however, they’ll often put a smile on your face.  The Tour AD VR, for instance, is meant to help you “Vanquish all Rivals.”  That alone got me excited to give it a test.

Graphically, the AD VR is the same as most of the other Tour AD shafts from Graphite Design.  It’s white in the butt section, striped under the branding, and a solid blue from the mid to tip.

What makes the AD VR stand out is the shade of blue .  It doesn’t translate perfectly in pictures, but it’s a beautiful matte blue with a hint of purple.  I can’t recall seeing any shaft quite like it.

Graphite Design does an unparalleled job of offering golfers insight into the feel of their shafts.  For each model, their website lists the stiffness of the butt, mid, and tip sections so that you can pick the exact feel you prefer.

GD lists the Tour AD VR as being “Firm+” in the butt section, “Medium” (softer) in the mid, and “Firm” in the tip.  In comparing that to the Tour AD DI , one of my favorite GD shafts, the butt is stiffer and the tip is softer.  That led me to expect a kick lower in the shaft, which is exactly what the Tour AD VR delivered.

The stiff butt section makes the AD VR feel very stable in the back swing and transition .  As the club gets parallel to the ground, there’s a controlled snap that feels like it’s about 2/3 of the way down the shaft.  For me, the amount of kick is perfect: enough to feel like the shaft is working, not so much that it feels out of control.

Performance

Regular readers know that my best performance typically comes with stiff tipped shafts.  After a recent run of successful testing with models that fit that description, I was a little leery about how a slightly softer profile would perform.  Thankfully, the quality materials and design of the Tour AD VR produced excellent results.

For me, the key to success with the Tour AD VR is the modest kick that I described above.  This shaft never feels torque-y or out of control , even though it does deliver a pleasant kick.  Even on mishits, the shaft feels very stable.  I could really lean into a swing or take it easy and still get predictable results .

The Graphite Design Tour AD VR is available as light as 40 grams in R2, R1, and stiff flex.  Those three choices, plus X flex, are available at 50 grams.  The 60 gram version has a S/R flex, stiff, and X, and the heaviest models, 70 and 80 grams, are only available in stiff and X.  Do note that the bend profile of the 40 gram version is different than the other weights.

Even if you don’t view your regular playing partners as “rivals,” I’ll bet you’d still like to “vanquish” them by blowing your tee shots past them.  If you’re fit for the right weight and flex, the Graphite Design Tour AD VR can certainly help you do that.  This is a shaft that provides a rare combination of active feel and stability.

I’d be the first to say that the right shafts make all the difference, and especially fun to experiment with to find your best game on any given day or course condition.. But, $380 + tax for a Graphite Design shaft?

As deeply committed as I am to this game and my equipment I’m still reluctant to drop that weight of coin on a single shaft. I’ve come close to spending that amount, and I have a number of shafts in my rota that I enjoy having to tweak my game whenever it feels right.

There’s a $ threshold that’s hard for me to cross for a single shaft. If I was playing golf for a living I wouldn’t think twice about it. As with many sports there’s an entry level, the upgrade, the high end and then there’s the pro level. Seems the GD line falls into the latter group.

I’m not brand loyal, and I’m in a new driver every 1.5 seasons. There’s no guarantee that the $380+ shaft will fit into that next new driver, especially when every company has a different adjustable hosel fitting.

Must be nice however …maybe I’ll think about it. (Don’t tell my wife though. )

I got one of these shaft in my Rogue Sub Zero. I agree with everything that was said in this article. I have 115 SS. Launch is good around 11-13 but my spin is around 3000. Would you suggest tipping this an inch MATT? I’ve never tipped a shaft before. Happy with everything the shaft offers would just like spin down a few hundred revs to around 2500

If the shaft, in its current state, isn’t game-able, then tipping it is certainly worth a shot. Tipping is no guarantee of lower spin, so you could potentially be “ruining” an otherwise decent shaft. I would recommend working with a fitter to find a profile that’s more suitable to you.

I realise this is a late comment, but tipping a shaft with the profile of the VR (or the DI), will probably make it spinnier as you are trimming the amount of stiff tip section and thus making it play more like the soft middle section.

I don’t believe that is true because no matter what, the tip end of the shafts is the softest due to diameter. The butt end it the firmest and you are leaving more of it on the shaft.

Would you say this shaft has a similar feel to the diamana ZF? Based on manufacturers’ specs it seems they have similar EI profiles, slights firmer mid and tip sections with softer more active mid section. Did you find that to be the case ?

Broadly speaking, they feel similar to me.

Hi Matt, Do you feel that the VR is the easiest Graphite Design shaft to hit a high draw with low spin? I think Iz spins more and TP is fade bias. I’ve never hit the Di.

It depends on the individual’s fit with a given shaft, so I can’t give you an answer that will work for everyone. For me, the VR is one of the easier GD shafts to turn over because the tip is softer.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI 6S vs. DI 6-SR, vs AD DJ 6

Right now I'm playing a Tour AD DI 6S, but the shaft is a smidge too much for me to load when I'm not swinging loose and free (I'm 47, so I've lost a lot of distance and golf strength over the years). So I would love to hear some real world comments on what you guys think about these shafts-- For example, if the AD DI 6S is a touch stout, and just slightly low spin, will I get better results with the DJ or the DI SR?

My ss is at 95 and I do hit the driver very high and reasonabily straight with the DI 6S. Just wondering if the feel would improve and perhaps a little distance too.

Anwyway- your comments are appreciated

at your swing speed I think the AD DI-6 SR would work better for you. I had one before and loved it. The DJ spins slightly more and if you already hit the ball high with the DI, using the DJ would probably raise the flight even more, which would lose distance vs a low spin mid flight of the DI. That's just my opinion and everyone is different, but for the most part the DJ spins more and you're probably better off with the DI-6 SR

🚨 Oklahoma makes history with fourth straight WCWS title

Oklahoma made history by becoming the first NCAA softball team to win four straight national titles after defeating Texas 8-4 in Game 2 of the WCWS championship series. The Sooners  beat Texas 8-3  in Game 1. 

The Sooners used 12 hits and five pitchers to secure the title. The Sooners' win marks head coach Patty Gasso's eighth national championship.

    GD lists the Tour AD VR as being "Firm+" in the butt section, "Medium" (softer) in the mid, and "Firm" in the tip. In comparing that to the Tour AD DI, one of my favorite GD shafts, the butt is stiffer and the tip is softer. That led me to expect a kick lower in the shaft, which is exactly what the Tour AD VR delivered.

The DJ spins slightly more and if you already hit the ball high with the DI, using the DJ would probably raise the flight even more, which would lose distance vs a low spin mid flight of the DI.
