Madhya Pradesh is home to a stunning array of wildlife, and if you're visiting Bandhavgarh in the Satpura hills, you won't be short of experiences or great places to stay. The park has many sites of archaeological significance, but its glorious tigers remain the landmark attraction. The topography here is also unique, and the landscape varies from wet grasslands and towering Sal trees to gentle rivers meandering through forests. So pick one of these safari lodges and camps in Bandhavgarh National Park and get exploring:

Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge

While conservationist Kailash Sankhala went down in history as the leading man for Project Tiger, his son, Pradeep, carried the baton forward by integrating wildlife conservation with tourism. The family set up Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge in 1992, and has run it like their own home amidst the wild ever since. It’s common to spot a pugmark right outside the grounds, or hear the calls of birds every morning. The 18-key lodge is run by a staff of locals who lead safaris and nature walks, cook local cuisine and offer culinary workshops, and are forever available for a conversation about the wild and its life. The rooms come with balconies and views of the garden, and there’s a library as well as a medicinal garden that guests can visit. Doubles from Rs17,500* including all meals and two safaris.

Syna Tiger Resort

Just a kilometre away from the Tala gate of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, this resort offers a luxurious stay in the heart of wilderness. Its 20 cottages take on various characters–while some feature an all-wooden interior, others come furnished with poster beds. Modcons such as air conditioning and ensuite dressing rooms abound all accommodations. Take a sip in the plunge pool, and spend the rest of the evening gorging on food made from locally sourced ingredients and served under wild canopies. Doubles from Rs16,000* including one meal.

Tree House Hideaway Bandhavgarh

The wild finds its way into this 21-acre property in more ways than one. Each of the six treehouses here is named after local trees found in Bandhavgarh’s wilderness. Goonja, Mahua, Banyan, Sejhi, Tendu and Palash come with mod-cons such as air conditioning, mosquito nets and minibars. The common alfresco dining space is built around an actual mahua tree, and is kept warm with traditional braziers. The premises are also home to a vegetable garden with herbs such as wild mint and basil as well as vegetables such as tomatoes, pumpkins, zucchini and more. While the food served is Indian or European, the team will set you a traditional Baiga thali on request. Cooked by locals, it includes regional dishes made with ingredients such as kodo and kutki millet. Doubles from Rs30,000* including all meals.

Mahua Kothi, a Taj Safari - Bandhavgarh National Park

Voted the second runner-up at the Conde Nast Traveller Readers' Travel Awards in 2020, this Taj resort is the luxurious getaway you need in the wild, untamed jungle. Named after the Mahua tree that is found in abundance here, this jungle resort sits on the periphery of the national park. With just 12 artistically done up mud cottages on a 45-acre property, the charming accommodation with handmade terracotta roofs and private patios blends well into its environment. Take a dip in the pool shaded by bamboo thickets and Mahua trees, as you sip on rose sherbets, or you can nibble on some of the farm-to-fork dining the resort offers. Samode Safari Lodge

This safari lodge is just a short drive away from the Tala gate of Bandhavgarh National Park. The 12 independent cottages strung along the main guest house are done up in vibrant hues with lots of local artefacts, while the public sit-out areas are decked out in colourful awnings. After you come back from your game drive, soak in the open-air tub in your private cottage under a star-lit sky. Opt for a picnic in the woodlands that the hotel will curate for you, enjoy a candlelit meal on the wooden deck, or spend an evening by the fireplace—there's no shortage of indulgent experiences here. Housed in a forest and spread over 30 acres, this private safari lodge is located just a short distance away from the Magadhi zone of the park.
