Introducing Titan Travel

Titan will never compromise on quality. We continue to make every effort to ensure that, when you travel with us, you enjoy the holiday of a lifetime, every time. Every individual aspect of your holiday has been carefully considered to deliver the best ratio of quality and value, provide complete peace of mind and yet still satisfy the most adventurous travel spirit. The expert planning, choice of hotels and transportation methods, included excursions and the services of an expert Titan tour manager can really enhance your appreciation of a destination and transform an ordinary holiday into a truly inspiring one.

Many escorted holidays sold by British tour operators originate in the destination and are aimed at the international market, with multilingual commentaries, sweepingly general itineraries and local contracted hotels and tour managers. Titan holidays are different. They are expertly crafted in-house and are only on sale in the UK; our well-travelled product specialists know their destinations inside out and select the best hotels, airlines, trains and cruise vessels. Properly balanced itineraries, most unique to us, are designed to include excursions and visits of particular interest to British travelers as well as a number of free days when there is always a choice of relaxation or enjoyable things to do. And, in the majority of cases, Titan holidays are escorted by the best tour managers in the business.

Included on every Titan holiday

Door-to-door chauffeured transfers wherever you live in the UK with no mileage restrictions as part of the peerless VIP door-to-door travel service †

Free return regional flights and home transfers for customers in northern England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands

Direct scheduled international flights (wherever possible) with world-renowned airlines

The services of a Titan tour manager throughout † (unless stated otherwise)

Named hotels, selected for their location and quality, or carefully chosen cruise accommodation

Best available coaches with experienced drivers and daily seat rotation

Excursions and visits to those attractions which are obvious highlights of a region, clearly specified in the ‘What is included’ panels of the tour pages

A number of meals, also specified in the ‘What is included’ panels

A comprehensive airport check-in service at Heathrow and Gatwick

SkyCaps porterage at Heathrow and Gatwick

Porterage at hotels (one bag per person)

All applicable airport and port taxes, security charges and UK air Passenger Duty

Not included in our new range of essentials holidays.

Exceptional Value

Quality often comes with a price tag and, indeed, Titan has never striven to be the cheapest tour operator. What you get with us though is unparalleled value for money, with a host of inclusions as standard and a range of exclusive offers and discounts.

Traveling in style With Titan, not only does your holiday begin and end at your front door, it also includes scheduled international flights with world-renowned airlines and the most memorable form of touring transport. Where this is a coach, we look to provide the best available, with air-conditioning, w/c and daily seat rotation in the interests of fairness. But escorted tours are not simply limited to coaches. Titan is one of the UK’s leading rail specialists and a number of our holidays incorporate journeys on iconic trains, that seem to transport you not only through some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes in the world, but also back in time to a nostalgic ‘golden age’ of luxurious and stylish travel.

If you are undecided between the elegance and relaxation of a cruise and the enthralling insight of an escorted tour, Titan’s Cruise & Tour® holidays could be a perfect choice. You can cruise with some of the most respected names in the industry, including Fred.Olsen and Holland America, around regions of awe-inspiring beauty and head ashore for an extra land-based touring element. Alternatively, the waterways of Europe, Egypt and China link the most spectacular cultural gems in picturesque fashion and a river cruise is an outstanding way to appreciate wonderful destinations from a different and more relaxed perspective. Our river cruise partners include Uniworld, multi award-winning operator of 5★ boutique river cruises.

Included Excursions We don’t believe that our holidaymakers should pay extra for optional excursions to experience what are obviously the most important attractions of a country or region. You get much better value if they are included from the start. Unless otherwise stated, every visit mentioned in the tour itinerary is included in the cost of your holiday.

Quality named hotels and lodges Hotels on Titan holidays are much more than simply a place to sleep at the end of the day. They may place you at the heart of a thrilling city or in a retreat of sublime tranquillity; reflect the character and heritage of a destination or play an integral part in its social scene; present inspiring views or a range of exhilarating experiences. Location and quality are key considerations. At Titan, we always seek to provide the best of both choosing a lower priced holiday based on lower quality, more remote hotels can often be a false economy in the time and money you end up wasting during your stay.

Low or No Single Supplements

We are always looking at ways of minimizing or eliminating our single supplements. A number of tours featured on this website have low or no single supplements to pay.

The UK's best holiday price promise

It has always been a Titan principle that the earlier you book, the lower the price you pay. Our holiday price promise provides complete peace of mind – if we subsequently reduce the price to below what you have already paid (after any discounts have been applied), we will contact you to refund the difference†!

This guarantee applies to tour prices only (excluding all Traveller, by Titan holidays and any selected loyalty rewards we may offer to past travelers from time to time) and does not include airline upgrades, holiday additions, extended stays or regional connecting flights and selected special offer products.

Not what you're looking for?

People that have booked this tour have also searched for the following:

Day 1 : Uk - In Flight

Accommodation: in flight, meals included: no meals.

Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your overnight flight to Delhi.

Day 2 : Delhi

Location: delhi, accommodation: hotel, accommodation name: roseate house delhi aerocity (4-star) or novotel new delhi aerocity (4-star).

Arrive in Delhi, with some time at leisure.

Day 3 : Amritsar

Location: amritsar, accommodation name: holiday inn amritsar (4-star), meals included: breakfast, dinner.

We fly to Amritsar, and transfer to our hotel for some time to relax. This evening, we experience one of the great traditions of the city, the ‘putting to bed’ (Palki) ceremony. Twice a day, the holy book of the Sikh faith, the Granth Sahib, is moved in a grand procession from a dedicated chamber in the Sikh Parliament to the Golden Temple, and back again. This daily ritual is really something to behold, hinting at the tremendous spirituality of Amritsar.

Day 4 : Amritsar

We return to the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of Sikhism. At its heart, set within a sacred pool, is the Hari Mandir (Divine Temple). This gold-plated architectural jewel is topped with intricate spires and cupolas, and decorated inside and out with verses from the Granth Sahib. We’ll explore the vast temple complex, including community kitchens which provide free meals to 10,000 pilgrims and the poor every day. Afterwards, we head out to walk the busy bazaars of the city and visit the historic Jallianwala Bagh. We also take some time to admire the Durgiana Hindu temple, which takes its inspiration from the Golden Temple. An afternoon excursion to the India/Pakistan border town of Wagah showcases the pomp and pageantry of the Lowering of the Flag ceremony. Since 1959, armies flaunt their might from each side of the border with a stern display of battle call, foot stomping, marching and national anthems, before the national flags are lowered and the gates are slammed shut for the night.

Day 5 : Dharamshala

Location: dharamshala, accommodation name: fortune park moksha, dharamshala (4-star).

From Amritsar, we drive the 130-odd miles to Dharamshala, a small hill station surrounded on three sides by snow-capped peaks. This delightful town owes its fame (and its nickname, the ‘little Lhasa of India’) to one particular resident, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who chose it as a place of spiritual exile in 1960.

Day 6 : Dharamshala

A morning sightseeing tour of Dharamshala includes the residence of the Dalai Lama and the Norbulingka Institute, a registered trust dedicated to the preservation of Tibetan culture in art and literature. We also visit the nearby Tibetan Children’s Village, a boarding school at which orphans are provided with a Tibetan education, clothes, food and healthcare.

Day 7 : Pragpur

Location: pragpur, accommodation name: the judge's court, pragpur (3-star).

A morning’s drive takes us to the ornamental heritage village of Pragpur by way of a tea plantation and tea factory, where we learn about the plucking and processing of Kangra tea.In the afternoon, a walking tour of Pragpur’s cobbled streets, lined with richly decorated buildings, offers a glimpse of the village’s regal past. Our hotel, a splendid country mansion surrounded by orchards, is also a delight to explore.

Day 8 : Shimla

Location: shimla, accommodation name: radisson jass (4-star) or oberoi clarkes hotel (4-star), shimla.

Our next destination is Shimla, ‘Queen of the Hills’ and the summer capital during British rule in India. In this idyllic retreat, 2,200m above sea level, temperatures averaged 15 to 20 degrees cooler than Delhi and the baking hot plains. It’s an idyllic retreat, surrounded by pine, deodar, oak and rhododendron forests and criss-crossed by mountain streams - and all set against a backdrop of the snow-capped Himalayas.

Day 9 : Shimla

Echoes of empire still abound in Shimla, in its churches, libraries and grand colonial edifices. Our first full day here begins with a walking tour, including a visit to the Jakhu Temple dedicated to Hanuman, the heroic Hindu monkey god.

Day 10 : Shimla

A further day at leisure to relax in the beautiful surroundings of Shimla.

Day 11 : Kalka - Delhi

Location: kalka, delhi, accommodation name: crowne plaza okhla (4-star) or the suryaa new delhi (4-star), meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

A scenic rail journey aboard the Himalayan ‘Toy Train’ transports us from Shimla through the Shivalik ranges to the delightful hill town of Kandaghat, where we take a break before heading to Kalka railway station to board the Shatabdi Express, bound for Delhi.

Day 12 : Delhi

We’ll take in the best of Delhi, ‘Old’ and ‘New’, from the hand-carved 12th-century Qutab Minar minaret and the garden-tomb of Emperor Humayun, to the Hindu Birla Temple and the grand avenues and government buildings of Lutyens’ New Delhi. We also visit Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, and the 17th-century Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India.

Day 13 : Delhi - Uk

Meals included: breakfast.

Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Upon arrival, your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.

Reviews of this operator

Recently returned from the great....

Recently returned from the great Indian rail journey. My wife and I could hardly believe the value for money. From pick ups from Durham to Heathrow and back,to the number of coach and train journeys , quality hotels, great choice of food throughout and our first night in Heathrow Hilton. What really made our trip a success was our guide, Prashant, who managed a party of twenty four very varied, sometimes a little unpredictable travellers with ease.Nothing was too much trouble for him and as a group we gelled and warmed to Prashant as he kept us safe, well informed and a little entertained by his mix of authority and humanity.Where do I begin with the tour itself ? India,a country of extremes.Poverty,wealth,order,chaos.Sometimes bleak, often breathtakingly beautiful. The people, the cities, art, architecture, flaura and fauna.Delhi,Jaipur, Amritsar,Agra, Ranthambore, Chandigarh and the icing on the cake that is Shimla. An absolute masterclass of man versus nature, the railway and buildings are an unbelievable feat, but wait until you see the dual carriageway being built on the mountainside.🤯I could go on for a very long time but I'll just post some photos. Thanks to Titan, thanks to the excellent Prashant and and a massive thanks to the other twenty two travellers who helped shape our holiday of a lifetime.🏁💜

I have booked the Icelandic...

I have booked the Icelandic Adventure holiday with Titan Travel, the Booking Staff was pleasant throughout. What I love about Titan Travel, transfer from your home to the airport and vice versa is included in the holiday.

Danube cruise was great value....

Danube cruise was great value. Well organised. Clear instructions from Titan prior to travel. Door to door service great.

Exceptional trip and service by Titan

Just returned from a fabulous tour of California & the golden west. It’s a full on tour with early starts but you see so much varied landscape from the ocean to the desert to Yosemite. My 2nd tour with Titan & my first solo tour. Thoroughly enjoyed it & met some great people. Grand Canyon was amazing would definitely recommend

Not merely a holiday, rather a memorable experience

I have used other travel operators; this was the 1st time of touring with Titan----Israel, The Holy Land, from being collected from home and returned at the end of the holiday this was an unforgettable experience; the Tour Manager, a PhD Archaeology made the whole tour so interesting, he enlightened us throughout each day from an historical, archeological and Biblical viewpoint, bringing each site we visited come to life, and went over and above his remit escorting us for evening trips around the local area; thanks also to our very patient driver who coped with the very busy traffic; our hotels were good, professional and pleasant staff and really good food; I would recommend Titan to anyone looking for a fascinating tour with excellent efficient service thank you Titan nor just for a holiday for a memorable experience

We had a 2 weeks...

We had a 2 weeks fantastic holiday arranged by Titan to Vietnam and Cambodia. Excellent, well organised Throughly enjoyed. Very good service by Vietnam Airlines, if you could afford book it in premium economy. We had a door to door service , picked up to airport from home and then dropped at home from airport, very convinient. Particular credit goes to our guide THI who is a caring, knolegeable, friendly down to earth man who made our trip a memorable one. I will not hesitate to book another holiday through Titan, their staff are friendly and helpful

We had a fantastic holiday...

We had a fantastic holiday in Mississippi. Right from our chauffeur driven car picking us up to the return journey, we had a great time. The first hotel The Gaylord was amazing, absolutely huge, first class. The second The Double tree in Memphis unfortunately wasn't, the hotel was tired and very basic, the only plus was where it is situated in the centre of town, we were only there two nights so it wasn't to bad. The American Queen Steam Boat was first class all the way, thoroughly enjoyed the seven nights sailing down the Mississippi. The last hotel the Sheraton New Orleans was very comfortable too. Our guide throughout our time away was Laura Tuttle. she was amazing, very knowledgeable, and helpful. We also had a coach driver Guil, who went over and beyond to give you the best time. Other coach guides included Jim,who was so funny, and also very knowledgeably. Very entertaining throughout. The entire itinerary itinerary was very well thought out, included a huge variety of visits to different Interesting locations. Highly recommend using Titan for all your holiday destinations.

Perfect Italian Holiday…

Just returned from a lovely week in Sorrento at the Grand Hotel Hermitage, we had an excellent guide Peter Macchristopher. we loved the hotel the staff were very nice especially in the dining rooms, the food was good and the room we had was really nice with a wonderful view. Altogether very good value holiday.we felt the trip to Pompei was very good also boat trip to Amalfi. I would recommend a walk to the village of St Agatha and a three hour ride on the Little Blue Train. Great fun.this can be booked at reception.

THE GREAT INDIAN RAIL JOURNEY!!!!...

THE GREAT INDIAN RAIL JOURNEY!!!! (Dreadful) Avoid Titan and Saga at all costs. False descriptions of the tour and dreadful administration Returned to the UK last evening with a great sigh of relief after the worst holiday ever. 1. No block booking of airplane seats by Titan. (Husband and I sat apart on the long, overnight flight) 2. Unable to pre-book seats as Titan reference numbers did not coincide with anything. 3. Husband and I not sat together on any of the train journeys! In fact, on one occasion I was sat, alone on a sleeper carriage, a couple of carriages away from the rest of the group who were scattered over two or three carriages. Terrifying as a female to be sat alone in the midst of noisy locals!!!!! (Eventually the guide, Rahi, did come to rescue me and found a seat near the main group) 4. The guide, Rahi, would usually get off the coach and begin walking off without waiting for all the group to disembark the coach. (Spot the guide in the crowd!) 5. The guide, Rahi, refused to use any identifying prop such as a flag, hat, jacket or umbrella. Frightening to be in the manic crowds of Delhi and other crowded places to be unable to see the guide. 6. NO AUDIO HEADSET system on any excursion 7. The guide, Rahi, didn’t face the whole group, but stood sideways on and was unable to be heard by the majority. 8. OUTRAGEOUS behaviour by the guide when he enquired as to the whereabouts of my husband, whom I explained was in bed with an upset stomach and was feeling unwell. Rahi DID A REVERSE AIR PUNCH😳😳. This was in response to an earlier conversation when my husband had complained about our separate seating arrangements. TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL 9. When we arrived at Heathrow to find our aircraft seats were not allocated, we were advised to speak to our guide on arrival at Delhi. Rahi merely shrugged his shoulders and said he couldn’t do anything. 10. Tour pace incorrect - gruelling pace and only half a day relaxation due to the guide, Rahi, throwing in visits to shops and factories fie him to earn his commission as I head him tell another!!!!!!! 11. When off loaded the return flight due to illness, we were unable to get in contact with Titan/Saga. Left in Delhi without an hotel or flight!!! Found accommodation but didn’t remove shoes or clothes due to the poor standard. Final summary: Poor, disappointing, inefficient, incompetent, misleading, misrepresentations, are just a few words to describe.

Luxury VIP door to door...

Luxury VIP door to door travel! I don't think so....Titan sent a Toyota Prius uber to Stanstead for a return journey to Newport, S Wales. 4 adults plus luggage! the experience was anything but luxurious. Contacted Titan on the return journey and since return. They simply didn't seem interested and offered us a £300 travel discount off a future trip! After a lot of emails they converted it to a £300 cash refund. Give it a lot of thought before booking !

How to plan your dream trip to the Himalayas

Bradley Mayhew

Jan 28, 2021 • 5 min read

Stunning view of the Himalaya mountains (Cholatse and Taboche to the left), Ngozumpa glacier, and Gokyo lakes (the world's highest freshwater lakes, sacred for both Hindus and Buddhists), as seen on top of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), near the village of Gokyo, in Sagarmatha National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site in Khumbu region, Solukhumbu district, eastern Nepal, Asia.

For mountain lovers and the vertically inclined the Himalayas represent nothing less than the crowning apex of nature's grandeur. Here dramatic forested gorges rise to skylines of snow-capped glaciated peaks through a landscape that ranges from high-altitude desert to dripping rhododendron forest.

Home to some 50 million people, this is no alpine wilderness, but rather a vibrant mosaic of peoples, cultures and communities, criss-crossed by ancient trading and pilgrimage routes that offer their own unique inspiration. Test your mettle against some of the world's most audacious and dangerous roads, or set a more measured pace on a trek through yak pastures to prayer flag-strewn passes haunted by snow leopards and red pandas. Stretching in a 1550 mile-long arc (2500km) across Asia from Kashmir to Kathmandu , Lhasa to Ladakh , the Himalayan range is a big place. Focus your pilgrimage on one of these dream trips.

Brightly colored prayer flags flutter in the breeze beside a bright, clear lake surrounded by sandy colored hills

Ladakh – India's little Tibet

Hidden over high passes in an arid, largely treeless rain shadow, Ladakh is classic Trans Himalayan scenery: huge khaki-colored valleys and harsh rock walls brought alive by the occasional splash of irrigated green. Traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture remains intact here, with spectacularly located monasteries that burst into life during medieval masked dance festivals that have changed little in 500 years. Travelers should expect epic treks, sparkling high-altitude mountain lakes, and a well developed infrastructure with inexpensive guesthouses around the capital, Leh .

When to go: June to September.

Getting there: Daily flights from Delhi to Leh, or take the spectacular seasonal high roads over the Himalayas from Manali or Srinigar .

Suggested itinerary: Hire a jeep or an Enfield motorbike and drive out to ancient Hemis , Lamayuru and Thiksey monasteries, taking a side trip to the turquoise lake of Pangong Tso bordering Tibet ; afterwards, do a five-day homestay trek through the Markha Valley.

Off the beaten track alternative: Spiti , in neighboring Himachal Pradesh , has the same dramatic mountain scenery and monasteries but without the crowds. Trek from village to village with a local organization and overnight at the incredible monasteries of Dhankar and Tabo .

A woman visiting stupa is about to descend a staircase of a monastery

Tibet – roof of the world

The high Tibetan plateau is the rooftop of Asia, hidden from the Indian subcontinent behind the ramparts of the Great Himalaya. Despite Chinese-led modernization, Tibet 's great monasteries still hum with murmured mantras and the flicker of yak butter lamps. Sublime landscapes, ranging from rolling grasslands to high-altitude turquoise lakes, a vibrant Buddhist culture and the friendly and resilient Tibetan people are the highlights here, as are the views of Everest's North Face – miles better than anything you'll see in Nepal.

When to go: Mid-May to September.

Getting there: Flights to Lhasa from  Chengdu , Beijing and many other cities in China , or take the world's highest train from China to Lhasa.

Suggested itinerary: Join a tour for the seven- to ten-day overland trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu, stopping at the incredible multistory stupa (structure containing Buddhist relics) at Gyantse and the spectacular medieval monastery at Sakya.

Off the beaten track alternative:  Complete a rugged three-day trek around Asia's most sacred peak, Mt Kailash , in remote Western Tibet, and then visit the incredible Kashmiri-influenced art of Tsaparang and the Guge Kingdom, hidden deep in the weirdly eroded desert gorges of the Sutlej Valley. Paved roads and an airport outside Ali make the two-week trip much less arduous than it used to be, though you still have to hire transport and a guide through an agency in Lhasa or Kathmandu.

A series of yellow tents pitched on a rocky terrain at the foot of a snow-capped mountain

Nepal – a trekker's paradise

The best way to experience the mountains is on foot, and Himalayan treks just don't get any more spectacular or convenient than in Nepal . Follow mountain paths past lines of spinning prayer wheels and charming stone Sherpa or Tamang villages to the foot of jaw-dropping 8000m peaks like Annapurna or Everest, safe in the knowledge that at the end of the day you’re guaranteed a cozy bed and hot dinner. Add on a visit to the medieval cities of the Kathmandu Valley , once a Himalayan artistic powerhouse.

When to go: March, April, October, November.

Getting there: Fly to Kathmandu and hop on a domestic flight to Lukla for the Everest region. Pokhara is the launch pad for treks in the Annapurna region.

Suggested itinerary: To trek to Everest Base Camp you need a minimum of 14 days, but we recommend adding on a four day side visit to the stunning mountain lakes of the Gokyo valley. Factor in ample time to acclimatize.

Off the beaten track alternative: The 17-day walk around Manaslu is possibly Nepal's greatest teahouse trek (you stay in lodges along the way), or go camping expedition-style on an epic three-week trip to the Dolpo or Kanchenjunga regions.

Colorful prayer flags flutter in the breeze. A white monastery structure, built into the side of the mountain, is in the background

Bhutan – the last Shangri-la

As the last surviving great Himalayan kingdom, Bhutan has an otherworldly air that seems rooted in another age. Traditional dress is the norm everywhere, old-growth forest carpets the majority of the countryside and remote Himalayan peoples like the Layaps and Brokpas live a life largely untouched by the modern age. Simply put, Bhutan is like nowhere on earth. The catch? The fixed minimum daily rate of US$250 per person is mandatory, although this does include transport, meals, guide and accommodation.

When to go: March, April, September, October.

Getting there: Fly to Paro from Delhi or Bangkok, or drive overland from neighboring India.

Suggested itinerary: Explore the delightful Paro Valley and its iconic Tiger's Nest Hermitage  (Taktshang Goemba) before driving to the little-visited Haa Valley, the tiny capital of Thimphu and the sensual fortress-monastery of Punakha. Schedule your visit around one of Bhutan's colorful tsechus (monastic festivals).

Off the beaten track alternative: The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Mustang in Nepal also comes with a hefty daily permit cost (US$500 per person), though you'll get a chance to explore centuries-old Tibetan architecture and may even gain an audience with the king.

Small boy riding a horse in front of Christ Church in Shimla

15 days from £3550 per person

Route: Delhi – Amritsar – Dharamsala – Palampur – Pragpur – Shimla – Delhi

From the magnificent Golden Temple of Amritsar, heart of the Sikh religion, to the quintessentially British hill station of Shimla, this tour incorporates the best of northern India's beautiful and evocative Himalayan foothills. Stop en-route in the colourful Tibetan enclave of Dharamsala, home of the exiled Dalai Lama, nearby Palampur and Pragpur, a small heritage village located close to the Kangra Valley. Ample time is included to enjoy Shimla and the surrounding valleys before returning by train to Delhi for an exploration of both historic Old Delhi and Lutyens planned Raj-era capital.

ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTS

The spectacular Sri Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple at Amritsar is the holiest of the Sikh religion. The upper floors are covered with gold and the building is surrounded by water.

Tucked away in the upper reaches of the Kangra Valley, Dharamsala is the residence of the Dalai Lama, location of the Norbulingka Institute and the Indian centre for Tibetan exiles.

High in the dense forests of the Himalayas, Shimla was developed as the summer capital of British India to enable the civil servants and their families to escape the heat of the plains.

Foothills of the Himalayas

An exploration of India can feel like a spiritual journey. What else would you expect from a country that’s the birthplace of four of the world’s major religions and renowned for its diversity? For travellers looking to delve a little deeper, the team have designed a pilgrimage north into the foothills of the Himalayas, taking the slow road (and train) to Amritsar, and encountering many facets of India’s spiritual side along the way.

Begin in Delhi , then let India’s extensive railway network whisk you north to Haridwar, one of India’s holiest Hindu cities, set beside its holiest river - the Ganges. Continue via Shimla and Palampur to the new Buddhist heartland of Dharamshala, home to the exiled Dalai Lama, Tibet ’s spiritual leader, and round off your trip with a stop in Amritsar.

Jama Masjid, Delhi

Visit Delhi ’s temples, mosques and a Sikh gurudwara, and indulge in a little culinary worship at the city’s tastiest street food stalls. Witness the spectacular and almost other-worldly Ganga Aarti ceremony by the River Ganges then, travelling via one very concretey city, board a 1903 narrow-gauge railway and chug at a sedate pace into the Himalayan foothills. Drink in the peaceful forests and serene mountain views of Shimla and Palampur before experiencing the spirituality of Dharamshala and the Sikh Golden Temple in Amritsar, which is arguably just as impressive as the Taj Mahal.

Divine Delhi

On arrival in Delhi , your first impression might not be one of intense spirituality. This is, after all, a bustling, noisy, metropolitan city, whose inhabitants often appear to be wholly consumed with simply going about their daily lives. There’s little time to pause whilst navigating the narrow streets and alleys of Old Delhi, the ancient base of the Mughal dynasty, or the wider boulevards of New Delhi, India’s modern capital.

Still, this city does offer ample opportunities to stop and reflect, if you know where to look. Take a few moments at the Jama Masjid, one of India’s largest and most magnificent mosques, or the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, a prominent Sikh temple of gleaming white marble. Lend a hand with the food preparation at the langar - the free community kitchen, common to every gurudwara, that feeds anyone who wishes to be fed - before sitting down to eat with the other diners. Take the chance to meet one of the young guides from the Salaam Balaak Trust for a tour of the backstreets around New Delhi’s Train Station. Salaam Balaak is a non-government-run organisation that provides support and protection to Delhi’s street children, and all of their guides have lived on the streets of the city at one time or another.

Ganges, ghats & garuda in heavenly Haridwar

A centre of Hinduism and mysticism going back centuries, with a name that translates literally as ‘Gateway to God’, Haridwar is the holiest Hindu city in Uttarakhand state. Set in the place where India’s holiest river, the Ganges, emerges from the Himalayan foothills onto the North Indian plains, Hindu pilgrims flock to the city. They make their way down to the holy river from the ghats (stepped platforms by the riverside) and bathe in the fast flowing waters.

The city is one of only three places where you can witness the spectacular Ganga Aarti ceremony, as every evening the river comes alive with the flickering flames of floating offerings released from Har-ki-Pauri Ghat to honour the Goddess Ganga. Accompanied by the lap of the water against the walls, the chanting and singing of the faithful, the clang of bells, wafting of incense and billowing flames, it’s a moving sight, comparable to the better-known ceremony in Varanasi . Wander through Haridwar to explore some intriguing temples, the lively Jhawla Market and the Bara Bazaar, known for its Ayurvedic medicine.

A vision in concrete?

Although we generally try to avoid one night stops, sometimes they are necessary to make a journey flow. In the best cases, they enable you to see something really different and unique in snapshot form. At Chandigarh for example, the renowned Swiss architect Le Corbusier was involved in creating one of the first planned cities in post-independence India. 70 years later, the grand concrete buildings, monuments, civic squares and parks are all still there, if a little worn around the edges. One particularly quirky highlight is the surreal ‘Rock Garden’ sculpture park: a 40 acre site filled with over 2,000 sculptures created from discarded pottery and junk by Nek Chand, a government official with a secret passion for art.

Himalayas, hill-stations & heritage

Take a slow but picturesque journey, chugging into the Himalayan foothills via a narrow-gauge railway that’s a piece of history in itself, having been in operation since 1903. Arrive in Shimla, known as the ‘summer capital’ during the British Colonial period due to its cooler climate and superb mountain views, then wend your way onwards to Palampur, surrounded by scenic tea plantations, pine-covered slopes, and views of the snow-capped Dhauladhar mountain range.

Around three nights, split between these two hill stations, offers ample time to soak up the mountain vistas, walk the forest trails and explore architecture which reveals so much about the area’s former residents. Two prime examples to put on the must-see list are the Viceregal Lodge, the official summer residence of the British Viceroy of India which, in the lead up to independence, hosted historic talks between Indian and British political leaders, and the oh-so-English Christ Church, one of the oldest churches in northern India.

Buddhist home-from-home

Surrounded by the sweeping scenery of the Kangra Valley, you’ll find yourself in a Buddhism-centred enclave. Dharamshala is probably best known as the current home of the Dalai Lama, though technically the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader resides a short distance away in the suburb of McLeod Ganj, otherwise known as ‘Little Lhasa’. This distinctive area is full of temples and stupas, monasteries and convents, meditation centres and schools, all garlanded with colourful prayer flags and traversed by red-robed monks. This attracts large numbers of local Buddhist pilgrims, as well as a fair number of intrigued travellers from further afield. Away from the Dalai Lama’s temple complex, there is plenty more heritage architecture to explore, and some superb hiking to be had.

Sikh spiritual capital

The Golden Temple - the holiest shrine of the Sikh faith - is home of the Adi Granth, Sikhisms sacred scripture, which is one of the most extraordinary sights in a land overflowing with them. Linger in the morning, as the city wakes and pilgrims from all over the world begin to enter the temple to bathe in the tank of sacred water, then return to soak up the ambience of the evening illuminations, as devotees flock to see the Adi Granth ceremonially ‘put to bed’.

Although the Golden Temple offers more than enough reason to devote a few nights to Amritsar, the city has much more to reveal. This is somewhere with a chequered history. The Jallianwala Bagh, a walled garden containing a flame of remembrance, marks the site where British troops opened fire on a large Indian crowd assembled for peaceful protest in 1919. Its proximity to the border also offers the opportunity to explore the vast issues surrounding the partition of India and Pakistan. Visitors can watch the famous nightly border-closing ‘lowering of the flags’ ceremony at the Wagah Border between India and Pakistan, which is a feast of impressive marching, competitive cheering and exuberant pageantry.

A note on cost…

The guide price of £1,990 US$2,490 is a per person price (not including international flights) staying 2 nights in Delhi, 2 nights in Haridwar, a 1 night stop at Chandigarh, 2 nights in Shimla, 1 night at Palampur, 2 nights in sacred Dharamshala and finally 2 nights at Amritsar in the state of Punjab; all in our favourite mid-range hotels. How yours looks is up to you, our tailor-made specialists work with you to create your perfect journey.

The fading boundary between farmers and tigers in the Himalayas

by Delft University of Technology

riverbed

A river in the foothills of the Himalayas separates tigers and farmers and nurtures both wildlife and agriculture. But now that the river is drying up, conflicts between the two are increasing, endangering the habitat of both. River scientist Kshitiz Gautam is looking for ways to restore the balance between man and nature.

For weeks, Ph.D.-candidate Kshitiz Gautam steered his motorbike over the stony surface along the clear blue waters of the Karnali River in Nepal. Armed with a bright green digital measuring rod, he was scouring walls, trees and stones for signs of earlier water level markings left there by the floods.

The Karnali River splits into two branches, one of them dividing a national park from the farm lands. Gautam collects data about the river to understand why this particular river inlet is drying out while another, outside the park, is expanding. The falling water level is posing a serious threat to the local population and animals alike. Gautam's research is part of a project called "Save the tiger, the grasslands, the water."

Dissolving barrier

The riverbank soil is packed with nutrients and is particularly suitable for growing crops. During the dry season , the water is so low that tigers can easily make their way across from the national park towards the crop fields. Confrontations with tigers are becoming a growing concern, as Gautam himself witnessed.

"I had a close encounter with one when I was doing fieldwork in 2022. I was going about my business when suddenly people started shouting. A tiger had attacked a cow and killed it not far from where I was standing," he said. The tigers are not just targeting cows; attacks on people are also becoming more common.

The river also plays an important role in nature conservation. It carries nutrients from the Himalayas which boost grass growth along its banks. The grasses are eaten by deer, which in turn feature on the tigers' menu. Without the river to sustain it, the food chain is in danger of collapsing. There are some 4,000 tigers left in the world, and Bardiya National Park in Nepal is one of their most important habitats.

The river in numbers

To find out what makes the water level drop, Gautam is devising a computer model of the river. He uses the model to investigate possible causes, such as huge boulders transported from the Himalayas blocking the flow, climate change and human intervention .

"At the nearby Koshi River, for instance, we found that dams for hydroelectric power stations are blocking sediment transport and that means habitat downstream is being deprived of important nutrients," Gautam said.

The research is first and foremost practical. Gautam said, "I am not doing fundamental research . This is about practical solutions for the local population to work with."

Gautam was able to advise the local park rangers, for example. "They wanted to dredge the drying inlet to one meter, but this would not have been enough. With my data I could advise them how much dredging was necessary so water would flow again in the branch," he explained.

To create his model, Gautam needed data on water levels and sediment types. As historical records were unavailable, Gautam turned to the river itself to get the information.

This wasn't Gautam's first time in Nepal. He grew up not fifty kilometers from the river.

"That Ph.D. vacancy felt tailor-made for me," he laughs. Apart from knowledge about the area, Gautam also had the requisite academic credentials. He did his master's in hydroinformatics and studied the effect of river morphology on ecology.

"Human interventions, such as hydroelectric power stations, must co-exist with nature with the least disturbance to the natural balance," he said. That is what he tries to achieve on the Nepalese river.

On his return to Nepal, Gautam found that the river had changed considerably: "Years ago we used a ferry to get across, but now you can just wade through."

While preparing for the research from his desk in the Netherlands, Gautam had decided he would take depth measurements and river sediment samples every five kilometers. However, the big boulders made sampling the river bed a challenge. Photographs proved to be the solution, but how to estimate the size of the boulders from the pictures? A quick rummage through his pockets produced the perfect measuring tool.

"I used my OV chip card for scale," Gautam said.

Convincing the locals

The reception of the GPS signal was not as straightforward as it had seemed either. To precisely measure the water level marking, the GPS on top of the green rod requires a strong communication signal with the antenna, which needed a high vantage point. The bridge over the river turned out to be too low.

"The tallest place we could find was a four-story house," Gautam said. He set out to persuade the owners to let him place his antenna on the roof.

"In Nepal, the best way to get this done is first making a friendly relationship. If you gain trust first, it makes it easier to request," he said. Gautam visited the family a few times, and in the end, permission was granted.

Gautam's knowledge of the Nepalese language, nature and culture proved to be invaluable during his fieldwork. "Studying and working in Nepal, I learned to use limited resources and equipment that are at hand. This, in combination with measuring equipment at TU Delft, made the fieldwork a success."

And now, the installed radar water level sensor allows him to gauge the local water distribution from his desk in the Netherlands as it happens.

"I'm proud to have this knowledge and can use it to help my community and make it better," Gautam said.
