World Pickleball Tour

The World Pickleball Tour is in San Diego! From January 27-29, 2023, we'll be hosting our 3rd tournament of the year at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort.

We exist to grow the game at the grassroots level, and aim to provide high-quality, valuable, and memorable competitive experiences for you all, the amateur players. We look forward to seeing you at this event!

ABOUT THE WPT The World Pickleball Tour is a strictly amateur tournament series that hosted 25 events in 2022 and is hosting nearly 40 in 2023. All our tournament stops are considered "challenger" events, as all Gold Medalists from our circuit are invited to the 2024 WPT Amateur Invitational Championships, which will pit the best amateur players in the country against each other as they compete for their share of the $175,000 CASH PURSE at the event! WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: • Tournament Dates: January 27-29, 2023 • Skill/Age Brackets: 3.0-5.0; 19+, 50+, and additional age brackets as needed. • Registration Perks: All players receive a WPT player swag bag: a reusable, branded tote that contains elevated giveaway items, hydration and nutrition essentials, court fashion accessories, other player necessities, and a World Tour DRIFIT t-shirt! Players who register for 2 events will also receive entry into a 3rd event FOR FREE! • Format: This will be an unsanctioned, Round Robin-style event; DE format only used for brackets with 3 teams. We work to guarantee at least 3 matches per event, with full brackets able to ensure teams play 7 matches per event! Medal matches will be officiated! • Winners: All gold medalists earn an invitation to the 2024 championship event with $175k cash purse. Silver and bronze medalists will also earn a spot on the waiting list for the 2024 championship event. Justin Williams

Justin Williams is a three-time Stanley Cup Champion, winning titles with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 and Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and 2014. A former Hurricanes captain and Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP, Williams recorded 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) in nine career Game 7s, which is the most career Game 7 points by any player in NHL history.

APP pickleball tournament in Queens welcomes national competitors

NEW YORK -- From the courts of Central Park to the historic grounds of Arthur Ashe Stadium, pickleball has taken the world by storm.

The Association of Pickleball Players (APP) hosts one of the biggest tournaments in the country, serving players from amateur to professional levels since 2019.

For the APP, the love for pickleball has no age limit. Their event attendees are as young as seven years old and as old as 85.

According to Max Ziemer, Strategic Partnerships at APP Global, this year's tournament celebrates "pickleball for all," providing a welcoming invite for everyone to get involved in the sport. To him, this year's tour feels especially like "a family."

Over 50 million people have picked up a pickleball racket over the past year and our host, Michael Koenigs, is one of them. He fueled up with an Eggland's Best veggie and herb frittata slider before going head-to-head with pro pickleball player Richard Livornese Jr.

With the tournament being held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the APP shows that pickleball is more than recreational. It's a professional sport with the capacity to bring people together from all walks of life.

Marco Island approves variances for adding pickleball courts at racquet center

Marco Island's racquet club will move forward with the first phase of its pickleball conversion with seven courts instead of the proposed eight, along with an 8-foot fence and sound proofing barriers.City Council members decided June 17 to change the number of courts in Phase 1 to avoid the need for one of the three variances requested for the project.The council voted in October to demolish the existing racquet court building, championship court, and two clay tennis courts at the city's existing  Racquet Center  on San Marco Road, replacing them with paved pickleball courts. Four clay tennis courts will remain after the first phase. Phase 2 would replace those courts as well, for a total of 24 pickleball courts, however that phase hasn't been funded and could change, council members and staff say.

Neighbors remain unhappy about pickleball

Councilmen Rich Blonna and some neighbors of the 1978 racquet center at 1275 San Marco Road are still opposed to converting tennis courts to pickleball courts at the city owned facility. Blonna has previously suggested that a separate pickleball center be built on property the city buys somewhere else on Marco Island.

Tennis versus pickleball "is a totally different experience, sound wise" Blonna said. "It’s the type of sound that is a continuous sound, that’s gotten me concerned."A neighborhood information meeting was held May 31 with engineers, Marco Community Affairs Director Dan Smith, engineering firm LJA Engineering, Inc. and the city's Fleet and Facilities department managers.There, neighbors, mostly from nearby Marco Villas condo community, talked about noise and lighting and how it disturbs them. Brent Guillot of LJA Engineering had sound dampening panel samples. Those same panels were discussed at Monday's City Council meeting.Blonna said he doesn't see how mitigation will help the sound enough that "those folks in San Marco Villas aren't going to go crazy."

Council member Darrin Palumbo called pickleball "a little bit more machine-gun like" than the sounds of tennis.

"This is a great time to find out how these panels work," Smith said of the Phase 1 courts.

Neighbors at Marco Villas say they still don't want pickleball next to them.

"The main issue for us is the noise level," said David Cadwell, who lives at Marco Villas. "It affects us. It affects the people that live there. It affects how they go about their day."

Variances approved

Variances were requested for Phase 1 to allow existing buffers for landscaping and for parking, instead of those required under current city rules. The parking variance was made unnecessary when the council decided to cut the number of courts to seven.

The two other variances – to allow 10-feet buffers instead of today's required 15 feet – were approved. Blonna voted against the variances.

Why is pickleball replacing tennis?

Marco Island staff conducted a usage study of the racquet center in 2022 and found an increasing desire for pickleball and less interest in tennis. In October, City Council voted to demolish the existing racquet court building, championship court, and two clay tennis courts at the Racquet Center, replacing them with eight (now seven) paved pickleball courts in Phase 1.

Four clay tennis courts will remain after the first phase. Phase 2 would replace those courts as well, for a total of 24 pickleball courts. For this phase, the city is going to apply for a tourist development grant from Collier County.

Both phases include specialized sound barriers made to absorb pickleball noise that would be attached to fencing around the courts.

"Phase 2 has not been approved or funded," Smith said. "This is a great time to find out how these panels work."

Palumbo said if the panels aren't enough, the council will have to figure out what to do to improve it.

"I do think we owe these neighbors as much protection as we can afford," he said. "We would like to attenuate the sound as much as possible."Currently there is no sound proofing at the facility.

The full design of Phase 1 was awarded to Naples-based  Agnoli, Barber & Brundage Inc . It was funded at $786,000 for 2024 and was included in the Fiscal Year 2024 budget City Council approved Sept. 18. The 1-cent infrastructure sales tax is funding $436,000, with another $350,000 from Parks and Recreation impact fees, according to the  budget .

Marco Island is applying for a grant from Collier County's  Tourist Development Council  for Phase 2 in FY2025.

The grant program is funded through the tourism development taxes, also known as the hotel surtax.  This tax is applied to the rental fees paid by visitors for short-term accommodations such as hotel/motel rooms, condominiums vacation homes, and rental sources.

Initially expected to begin in May, the Phase 1 construction start is now planned for September.

World Pickleball Tour Savannah Challenger

The World Pickleball Tour is coming to Savannah in March 2024! From March 1-3, 2024, we'll be hosting another round robin tournament at the beautiful The Landings Club - Franklin Creek Tennis Center in Savannah, GA! 8 guaranteed matches on permanent courts at one of the best venues in the great state of Georgia! ABOUT THE WPT The World Pickleball Tour is a strictly amateur tournament series that hosted 25 events in 2023 and is hosting nearly 35 in 2024! All of our tournament stops are considered "challenger" events, as all Gold Medalists from our circuit are invited to the 2025 WPT Amateur Invitational Championships, which will pit the best amateur players in the country against each other as they compete for their share of the $175,000 CASH PURSE at the event! We exist to grow the game at the grassroots level, and aim to provide high-quality, valuable, and memorable competitive experiences for you all, the amateur players. We look forward to seeing you at this event! WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Skill/Age Brackets: 3.0-5.0; 19+, 30+, 40+, 50+, 60+ (70+ after registration close, if applicable). 18 and under can register for 19+ (Must be age of 8 to register). Registration Perks: All players receive a WPT player swag bag: a reusable, branded tote that contains elevated giveaway items, hydration and nutrition essentials, court fashion accessories, other player necessities, and a World Tour DRIFIT t-shirt! Format: This will be an unsanctioned, Round Robin-style event with 8 guaranteed matches (games to 11, win by 2). World Pickleball Tour reserves the right to change the format to rally scoring anytime prior to the tournament. If the format is changed, we will send out rally scoring rules to all players prior to the start of the tournament. Multiple Events/Same Day: Once registration closes and the schedule is created, players will have the opportunity to add another skill/age event to the same day of competition as long as the start times don't conflict. Unsure of what level to play or wishing to test out your skills at the next level up, now you can play two events in a single day! Winners: All gold medalists earn an invitation to the 2025 championship event with a $175k cash purse. Silver and bronze medalists will also earn a spot on the waitlist for the 2025 championship event as well as any participate of a WPT event (in that order). What are you waiting for? Sign up now! Additional Information

WAITLIST: When registering for DOUBLES, the second signed up teammate MUST register within 2 days of the first player. If a teammate does not register within the specified time limit then the first player will be placed on the waiting list automatically. Emails will go out to both players when this happens. Once the second teammate registers they will be moved off the waiting list IF there is still room in the event. BRACKET MAX: If a bracket reaches the initial 9-player/team limit, please add yourself to the waitlist. Brackets will be expanded up to 11-players/teams if there is space available in the event day. Brackets that do not max out at 11 could be combined to provide the best possible playing experience for all participants. The manner in which they would be combined will be determined at the close of registration. If brackets are combined, medals will be awarded to the overall bracket winners. TOURNAMENT COST: Includes a registration fee ($70-120; depending on the period) and a per event fee ($30). SCHEDULE: Will be posted on the tournament website on Monday, February 26, 2024 by 11:59p PST. WPT events run in waves (8a, 12p, and 4p). Brackets are assigned to times based upon number of registrants, therefore, times can not be established until registration closes. Players/teams will be permitted to sign-up for a 2nd bracket on the same day (the weekend after registration closes), if the times do not conflict. EVENTS: Friday: Mens Singles / Womens Doubles Saturday: Mixed Doubles Sunday: Mens Doubles / Womens Singles

Refund Policy

CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: Refunds in the form of credits, less a $30 processing fee, will be issued for all cancellations regardless of reason. These funds can be put towards the tournament fees of future events. INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: This is an outdoor tournament. If weather is a factor, we will do all we can to play matches. There is no indoor backup plan for this tournament. WEATHER CANCELLATION POLICY: In the event of inclement weather that is deemed beyond the control of both the WPT and event venue, the following policy will be implemented: Event Fee Refund: Participants will receive a full refund of the event fee paid. Credit to a Future Tournament: Additionally, participants will be offered credit to be applied towards a future tournament hosted by the WPT. We understand the impact adverse weather conditions can have on event participation and strive to provide equitable solutions for all participants affected by such circumstances.
