AGINCOURT | WATERLOO | THE WESTERN FRONT | NORMANDY TO BERLIN

TripAdvisor

Our most popular Scheduled Day Tours focus on the Western Front of the First World War. You will be guided by one of our professional Tour Guides, all of whom are ex-British Army and you will be travelling in one of our spacious, air conditioned minibuses, chosen for their easy access and level of comfort. Our Day Tours are for small personable groups of up to eight people. The Tour price includes museum entry fees.

0900hrs to 1800hrs Picking up at Arras railway station, the Somme Day Tour visits the momentous locations of the War’s most infamous campaign, from the disasters of the 1st of July 1916 to the attrition of that autumn. After lunch we concentrate on the 1918 battles around Amiens and includes a visit to the Australian Memorial to the Missing at Villers Bretonnaux. Drop off at Arras 1800hrs.

0900hrs to 1700hrs Picking up at Arras railway station, the Arras Day Tour concentrates on the Allies’ 1917 campaign. It features a visit to the awesome preserved battlefield and trenches on Vimy Ridge and the 1917 attacks on the Hindenburg Line. You will have time for lunch in the medieval square in Arras, before taking in the Diggers Memorial and Bullecourt Museum. Drop off at Arras 1700hrs.

0900hrs to 2145hrs Picking up at Arras railway station. The area around Ypres saw significant events all through the War and your day will include visits to much of the battlefields, including the site of the Christmas Day Truce in 1914, Tyne Cot Cemetery and the Passchendaele battlefields, and concludes with an attendance at the Last Post Ceremony at The Menin Gate. Drop off at Lille or Arras.

“This is one of the best tours I have ever had the good luck to be a part of. Former grenadier Rod Bedford is a polymath not just on WWI but on just about any war that's ever been. His ability to seamlessly move from the big picture to the tiniest of details, and from the barbarity of war to its absurdly funny, is second to none. Ably backed by his wife Jackie, I wholeheartedly recommend this tour not just for those with a passing interest in WWI history but for those who think they know all about it. Rod will make you think again.” ADAM COURTENAY, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

Somme Battlefield Tours

Private and personally arranged battlefield tours to the evocative WW1 Battlefields of The Somme

Jonathan Nicholls is  a highly appraised, experienced guide and author of the acclaimed, ‘Cheerful Sacrifice: The Battle of Arras 1917’. He has been visiting and guiding tours to the Somme Battlefields since 1978, taking veteran soldiers of that terrible conflict on personal tours to their old action spots. The veterans have now faded away but he still relates their colourful stories of life in the British Army in 1914-18. He now plans and researches battlefield tours for families, organizations and professional travel companies. Jon is in continuous demand as an independent and vastly knowledgeable guide with personality.

Recent Battlefield Tours

In 2014 – 2015 Jon conducted private battlefield tours for  Travel Editions  (The Daily Telegraph & Guardian Newspaper Battlefield Tours)  Battle Honours ,  The War Research Society  and the  Metropolitan Police .

It is not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ to travel to the battlefields in a large coach with 50 other strangers. The alternative is a comfortable, tailor-made journey in the comfort of an air-conditioned 4×4 Landover (up to 4 persons & essential during the winter months) or a comfortable mini bus (up to 12 persons).

Personal Research

Jon can also undertake personal research into your soldier relative and take you to the place where they fell and now lie. This opportunity is not always available on a larger commercial tour, which understandably, concentrates and funnels its passengers to the popular spots such as the Thiepval Memorial and the Newfoundland Memorial Park. It is virtually impossible for a travel coach to access some of the more remote Somme cemeteries, (and there are many!)  especially during the winter months.

Personal collection

Jon can pick you up and return you to your door (London & Home Counties) or simply meet you in France at Arras, Albert or Amiens, the three principal towns for visiting the Somme battlefields.

The Somme Battlefields in one day

This can easily be done by an early departure from the UK (7am) by Eurotunnel and return by 7pm at night. The Somme is a 90-minute drive from Calais. Pleasant picnic lunches can be organised or a more substantial lunch at a local restaurant or café.

Overnight stays

For 1- 6 nights these can be arranged at a discount rate in the lovely town of Arras which, with its many restaurants and bars, is by far the best place to stay. Prices vary depending on the hotel.

The Battle of the Somme

The Battle of the Somme started for Britain on 1 st  July 1916 when a volunteer British Army attacked the German Lines on a 14-mile front in the region of the Somme. Over reliance on artillery support led to almost 60,000 British casualties on the first day. The ‘long procession of suffering & cruelty’ finally ground to a halt in mid-November 1916. It had cost the British Army over 400,000 casualties for an advance of 6 miles. The real tragedy of the Somme was that it was fought by an enthusiastic army of volunteers from all corners of the Commonwealth. German casualties were roughly the same. In spite of the terrible cost it was not in vain. Before the Somme the German Army had every chance of winning the war. At the end of the battle that chance had dwindled.

Australian and Canadian Battlefields

The Australian, New Zealand and Canadian forces fought gallantly on the Somme. Their casualties were huge and visiting their substantial cemeteries is a very moving experience. Jon has taken many Australian and Canadian Pilgrims to the Somme battlefields in recent months.

Ypres, Arras and more

Jon is well known for his expertise on the Arras battlefields. To find out more about him please visit  Arras Battlefield Tours  (testimonials). He has also been guiding tours to the Ypres Salient since 1980.

Testimonials

Alan and Anne Craft

“Many thanks for a wonderful visit to the WW1 battlefields. You made it come so alive, even in the face of indescribable death! The cemeteries and memorials were fantastic and to be marvelled at for beauty and upkeep but it was your ability to transmit the real stories that you had been told by real veterans that made all the difference. We have come back with a better understanding of the horror and stupidity of it all. A visit on our own would have meant little.” Professor Sir Alan Craft and Lady (Anne) Craft Newcastle Universit y

Shannon & Troy Donovan

“It was a truly wonderful experience to have Jon take us on a tour of the Somme Battlefields, Vimy Ridge and the cemeteries where my three great uncles are buried, which would have been very difficult to get to on our own. He also researched and provided information on the battles they were involved in and even brought remembrance crosses to place on the graves. Jon has a wealth of knowledge and is very passionate about what he does. He always ensured we were comfortable and took us to as many places of interest as possible, in addition to those on our list. He is a fantastic guide and we would highly recommend Jon to anyone interested in touring the battlefields of 1914-18.” Shannon and Troy Donovan Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Professor Stephen J Cooper and friends

“In 2013, when we were planning a trip to the Somme and Arras battlefields, we began our search for a suitable tour or individual guide. The information on Jon’s website suggested an experience a little different from the standard tour and historical perspective …… and indeed so it turned out.” “Jon gave us an insight into the battlefields and their memorials that I think few others could match. While, from our reading, we had some background to the history of the Great War his insights into the terrain and many of the more human and emotional aspects relating to various individual sites really brought home some of the reality to us. His conversations with a wide variety of veterans of the conflict mean that he is one of the few people who can provide an insight that goes beyond books or an historical account. We would add that Jon is also a great companion to have during the more social side of any visit you may make.” Professor Stephen J Cooper and friends

Lyn and Don Weldon

To the Somme battlefields… “Don and I can never thank you enough for the experience of travelling with you on a very personal journey. You certainly made our search come to life for us.The knowledge you shared, the stories you told and your ability to bring the whole picture of events to life impacted strongly on us. The kindness and consideration you showed as we located our family members and the little extras you did will never be forgotten. It was a trip of a lifetime and we would gladly recommend your tour to anyone on a Somme pilgrimage” Lyn and Don Weldon Wellington. New Zealand.

“Jon Nicholls (expert guide) – brilliant Steve Hartnell ( tour organiser) fantastic These  guys made our trip truly memorable – lovely, funny, kind and helpful. Fantastic” Mr Martin Stephenson who travelled on 01-Oct-2015

“Travel problem on the way back with Eurostar was brilliantly dealt with by Karen and your office. Jonathan our tour guide, was just magnificent, even magic Thank you” Sir Alan Craft who travelled on 25-Jun-2015

“Jon Nicholls, our tour expert, was a fountain of knowledge and pulled out all the stops for us – indefatigable.” Mr John Boyes who travelled on 25-Jun-2015

“Our guide, Jonathan Nicholls, was excellent. His encyclopedic knowledge of the battles and the characters involved, both leaders and the led, brought home to my wife and me the horror and the bravery. The tour showed us how little we knew of this momentous period in our country’s history” Review by Mr Colin Dight who travelled on 07-Aug-2015

“What made this trip was the Tour Guide, Jonathan Nicholls and his wealth of knowledge, being a military historian myself, I know the years of research required to make him into an ‘expert’ on WW1 battlefields/Cemeteries. Mr Trevor Walhen who travelled on 28-Aug-2015

“Tour Guide. Well, where does one start? We have over many years visited the WW1 battle areas both independently and with an organized tour. All much to our benefit with added knowledge. This tour with Jonathan Nicholls surpassed all the expected. The humour, detailed knowledge and delivery was quite simply outstanding. Perhaps too detailed for some but if one really wanted to explore and obtain the necessary information Jonathan’s method was most welcome. Thank you Jonathan for a most memorable and rewarding experience” Ms A Cunningham who travelled on 07-Aug-2015

About The Tour

The Battle of the Somme lasted from 1 July to 17 November 1916, and the fighting was some of the bloodiest of the First World War with over a million casualties - dead and wounded. Your Paris tour guide will explain the circumstances of the battle as well as the overall political and military history which led to the outbreak of The First World War.

You will visit the celebrated Museum of The Great War in the mediaeval town of Peronne, just a short drive from the battlefields. At Thiepval, you will see Sir Edwin Lutyen's imposing Memorial on which are recorded the names of 72000 men who have no known grave.

At Beaumont-Hamel, where the Newfoundlers attacked on the morning of 1 July, there is a well preserved trench system which shows how close the two front lines were. You will visit the moving Australian National Memorial at Villers Bretonneux and the cavernous Lochnagar crater where a huge mine was exploded under the German positions.

Ypres & Somme Tour

The Western front

The Western Front was the main theatre of war during the First World War. Following the outbreak of war in August 1914, the German Army opened the Western Front by invading Luxembourg and Belgium, then gaining military control of important industrial regions in France. The tide of the advance was dramatically turned with the Battle of the Marne. Following the Race to the Sea, both sides dug in along a meandering line of fortified trenches, stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier with France, which changed little except during early 1917 and in 1918.

This is a Bespoke Tour

Between 1915 and 1917 there were several offensives along this front. The attacks employed massive artillery bombardments and massed infantry advances. Entrenchments, machine gun emplacements, barbed wire and artillery repeatedly inflicted severe casualties during attacks and counter-attacks and no significant advances were made. Among the costliest of these offensives were the Battle of Verdun, in 1916, with a combined 700,000 casualties (estimated), the Battle of the Somme, also in 1916, with more than a million casualties (estimated), and the Battle of Passchendaele (Third Battle of Ypres), in 1917, with 487,000 casualties (estimated).

To break the deadlock of trench warfare on the Western Front, both sides tried new military technology, including poison gas, aircraft, and tanks. The adoption of better tactics and the cumulative weakening of the armies in the west led to the return of mobility in 1918. The German Spring Offensive of 1918 was made possible by the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk that ended the war of the Central Powers against Russia and Romania on the Eastern Front. Using short, intense “hurricane” bombardments and infiltration tactics, the German armies moved nearly 100 kilometres (60 miles) to the west, the deepest advance by either side since 1914, but the result was indecisive.

The unstoppable advance of the Allied armies during the Hundred Days Offensive of 1918 caused a sudden collapse of the German armies and persuaded the German commanders that defeat was inevitable. The German government surrendered in the Armistice of 11 November 1918, and the terms of peace were settled by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

WWI - Somme and Ypres Battlefield Tour

Delve into a journey through time and explore the profound history of these battlefields, where the past comes alive.

Are you intrigued by the historical significance of the Somme and Ypres? One pivotal question that arises is, "What were the reasons behind the Somme battle?" This immersive experience takes you back to the four-month Battle of the Somme, which transpired from July 1 to November 18, 1916. The objective was clear: Allied commanders aimed to ease the pressure on the French defenders at Verdun by inflicting heavy losses on German forces further north and drawing their reserves into the fray. This critical juncture in history saw the British Army suffer the tragic loss of 60,000 men on the sombre day of July 1, 1916. Important information: Your preferred drop off and collection point will be agreed with your driver prior to the tour start date .

“We had a wonderful few days & everything more than met our expectations. The accommodation in Amiens & Ypres was very good, especially Ypres as it was on the main square & only a short walk to the Mennin Gate. The tour itself was very informative & we had more than enough time to spend at the memorials etc. We were able to find my Great Uncle’s headstone at Tyne Cot cemetery which was quite an emotional moment for me. A really good, but very sobering day. Such loss of so many young lives. We have told many people of our experiences & have no hesitation in recommending your company to any one who might be considering visiting that area of France & Belgium.” Denise Eastley

“Our 1 day private Western Front Tour with Rod Bedford from The Battlefields Experience was just fantastic. I’m so glad I went for that option and I would highly recommend it for anyone in a similar situation i.e. wanting to ‘follow in the footsteps’ of a grandfather and more.  Rod was just great. I had a bundle of my grandfather’s details from the Australian War Memorial & National Archives and a book on the 14th battalion. Rod had  huge amounts of general, specific and local knowledge.

He managed to pass on big picture info and explain all sorts of where/what/why stuff about particular battles and how events moved and changed and right down to all sorts of interesting and funny tidbits. And he seemed genuinely interested in granddad’s stuff and trying to piece together all sorts of stuff and to give me specific insights and suggestions on how to research some things further. And he was just such good company, chatting about all sorts of random stuff with both me and my 13 yo daughter.

So it really was a memorable experience for us both. I just wish it had been longer and I would love to go back some time and spend another day or two with Rod as my guide. Diana Kervin

If you have limited time to visit the Somme Battlefields, perhaps just a single day, then this page lists the five must see sites that we reccomend you visit. These five represent some of the most visited sites on the Somme Battlefields, and will give a good overview for the battlefield visitor.

The area to cover is not large, and it's certainly possible to visit all these sites within a few hours. A map showing the sites, plus driving directions, can be found here .

Thiepval Memorial

Thiepval is the location to the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.  This massive memorial was unveiled in 1932 as a focal point for those who died on the battlefields of the Somme, but who have no known grave. There are 72,338 names inscribed on the panels around the memorial, and behind the memorial is a twin AnglovFrench cemetery, to symbolise that the 1916 Somme offensive was a joint attack with the French. This is the largest of all the Memroials to the Missing, and includes the names of seven Vicotira Cross holders.

For more information see the Thiepval Memorial page.

Demo Image

The Newfoundland Memorial Park is an area of ground which has been left undisturbed since the end of the War. Shell-holes and the trenches of both sides can still be clearly seen and you can even walk along some of the trenches.

It is the site where the Newfoundland Regiment attacked on the first day of the Somme - the 1st of July 1916 - and so there are memorials to those who died here, and the site is actually maintained by Veterans Affairs Canada, and they have guides and helpers on site who can tell you more about the battle and those who fought and died here.

For more information see the Newfoundland Memorial page.

The Ulster Tower

This tower is a copy of Helen’s Tower in County Down. It's located very close to the Thiepval Memorial, making visiting both sites easy. It's a a memorial to the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division, and is near the German Schwaben Redoubt (Feste Schwaben) which that Division attacked on July 1st, 1916. There is a cafe and toilets here as well.

For more information see the Ulster Tower page.

Lochnagar Mine Crater

On the morning of the 1st of July 1916 just before the British attacked, 17 large mines were exploded under the German lines. The intention was to destroy their trenches and make the British attacks more straightforward. The Lochnagar crater near la Boiselle remains to this day, and the crater gives an indication of the size of the explosion here more than 100 years ago. There is a memorial cross, and this is one of the places where services are held every 1st of July to remember those who died.

For more information see the Lochnagar Crater page.

Delville Wood is strongly linked with South Africa, as their forces fought here to take the wood in 1916. The wood has been left largely untouched since the end of the war, and so this is another site where there are the remains of trenchlines still to be seen. There is also an excellent museum. and markers showing the names the troops gave to the "rides" through the wood.

For more information see the Delville Wood page.

Newfoundland's unknown soldier brought home from France after more than 100 years

Remains landed in st. john's saturday evening, social sharing.

the somme battlefield tour

Newfoundland’s unknown soldier finally home

It was an emotional evening in St. John's Saturday as the remains of an unknown Newfoundland soldier returned home more than 100 years after the First World War, and hours after a powerful ceremony at the French battlefield where he died.

"I think it is absolutely amazing that this has taken place today," Rose Power, whose grandfather fought in the First World War, told CBC News Saturday. "I'm quite moved by it, that finally the unknown soldier will be home to rest."

After a moving ceremony in France in the morning, a jet carrying the exhumed remains of the unknown soldier — who will be interred permanently at the refurbished National War Memorial in downtown St. John's — arrived in the evening.

A hearse carrying the casket made a solemn procession past several sites of historical significance to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, including the training grounds in Pleasantville, the harbour where the S.S. Florizel would have tied up, the Sergeants' Memorial, the CLB Armoury and the National War Memorial itself.

A group of military members carrying a casket draped with a Canadian flag.

Crowds lined parts of the route to see the hearse as it drove past. Around a hundred people gathered in front of the war memorial, which is being restored to mark the centennial of its completion in 1924.

"It means so much," said Susan Murray of St. John's. "I have a great uncle who died during World War One and he is buried in France…There's such a connection to that and being able to repatriate a son that was missing, that no one knew, that was lost.

"We're able to bring him home."

A black hearse drives by a construction site.

The repatriation ceremony in France began at the foot of the Newfoundland Regiment caribou memorial which stands tall overlooking the lush green mounds of Beaumont-Hamel.

O Canada, La Marseillaise, the Last Post and the Ode to Newfoundland rang out across the century-old battlefield that usually sits silent, serving as a reminder for one of the largest catastrophes in the province's history.

Jacob Neil of St. John's, who is supervisor of the guide team at the Beaumont-Hamel historic site, was tasked with singing the Ode for the ceremony.

"It's something that I was asked if I'd be interested in. I know the prospect of it is a little bit daunting on such a prestigious and important day. It's something I knew I couldn't pass up," Neil told CBC News. "It's a privilege to just be here and to be able to participate in this ceremony. It's something that I'll treasure forever."

Neil said the mood on site is always a little sombre, but this weekend's transfer ceremony — one that saw France turn over the remains of the unknown soldier to Canada — had an aura of excitement.

"Closure is not something that can probably be attained for people, given the tragedy that happened here over 100 years ago, but it's something close to that, I think, for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador," he said.

Newfoundland's unknown soldier is returning home over 100 years after First World War

For Frank Sullivan, closure is exactly what he got. Sullivan is a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador command of the Royal Canadian Legion and part of the small team of legionnaires who were instrumental in creating a tomb of the unknown solider in St. John's.

Saturday's ceremony was among the final steps in having that dream come to fruition.

"Words fail me right now. It's a moment that I'll die with. What can I say? We're bringing a son home, somebody's son is coming home," Sullivan said.

"When he was brought in by the French military and turned over to our Canadian military, oh my, words can't describe the feeling."

Heading home

From France, the Canadian and Newfoundland and Labrador delegation returned home. With them, an added member.

Premier Andrew Furey was on the ground with his family for the duration of this week's events that began on Wednesday in northern France.

"It was incredibly moving, historic, special, spiritual. To see the casket again and to be standing there with my son, realizing that somebody's son — our son collectively — is now coming home is incredibly emotional," Furey said shortly after Saturday morning's ceremony.

"I broke down several times. It's a truly special and historic moment for all of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was an honour to be here today as premier."

Saturday's events were the pre-cursor to another significant event which will take place on July 1. The date marks Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador and 100 years of the Newfoundland National War Memorial in downtown St. John's.

On July 1, 1916 — the opening day of the Battle of the Somme — most of the Newfoundland Regiment was killed or wounded at Beaumont-Hamel. The day has been recognized since as a solemn day, even after Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949 and began to celebrate Canada Day on the same date.

Preparations have been underway to refurbish the site ahead of the milestone and will be the final resting place for the unknown soldier, inside a newly constructed tomb.

"It'll be another historic moment. I encourage every Newfoundlander and Labradorian, if they can, to come to celebrate this young man and all the young men that we're leaving behind," said Furey.

"I think July 1 will be powerful and I encourage everyone to participate and reflect on what it means for the sacrifice these young men made."

The soldier will lie in state at Confederation Building from June 28 to June 30, allowing members of the public to visit the casket.

Historic battlefields you can visit

Posted: 24 May 2024 | Last updated: 24 May 2024
