Suzi Quatro (born on June 3, 1950) is an American rock and roll singer, songwriter, bass player and actor, hailing from Detroit, Michigan, U.S.

Initially influenced by the likes of Elvis Presley and Billie Holliday as she was without a female rock and roll role model, Quatro’s earliest musical excursion came playing in her father’s band The Art Quatro Trio. She later moved on to join her sister’s band The Pleasure Seekers and released the singles “Never Though You’d Leave Me”/ What A Way To Die” in 1966, and “Light of Love” / “Good Kind of Hurt” in 1968. Uninspired by their label's direction for them, the group soon departed Mercury Records and changed their name to Cradle, and began playing the Midwest rock ballroom circuit.

Quatro subsequently signed with RAK Records as a solo artist and moved to England where the label was based. The rock singer’s debut single “Rolling Stone” in 1972, proved popular in Portugal but nowhere else unlike her sophomore single “Can the Can”. Utilising the glam rock proclivity of writers and producers Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, “Can the Can” topped the charts in both the UK and Australia and paved the way for string of hit singles including “48 Crash”, “Devil Gate Drive” and “The Wild One”.

Despite this single success and album successes with “Suzi Quatro” (1973) and “Quatro” (1974) in Europe and Australasia, popularity in the U.S. proved hard to come by. That was until she appeared as Leather Tuscadero in the U.S. sitcom “Happy Days” which coincided with the released of her fifth studio album “If You Knew Suzi” in 1978. The album shot to No. 37 on the Billboard 200, aided by the No. 4 single "Stumblin’ In” featuring Chris Norman.

Quatro released the album “Suzi… And Other Four Letter Words” in 1979, followed by “Rock Hard” in 1980 on Mike Chapman’s label Dreamland Records. The label soon perished however and with the days of glam rock coming to an end with the arrival of the ‘80s, Quatro altered her sound in a new-wave direction with the album “Main Attraction” in 1983.

The singer then pursued an acting career and starred in the West End musical “Annie, Get Your Gun” in 1986, hosted a TV chat show “Gas Street” and became a disc jockey on BBC radio. During this time Quatro released the albums “What Goes Around” in 2003, “Back to the Drive” in 2006, “In the Spotlight” in 2011, and continued her extensive touring the UK, Australia and Japan in support of them. To mark 50 years in rock and roll, Suzi Quatro issued the anniversary box set “The Girl from Detroit City” in 2014.

Live reviews

The stage is black except for the strobe lights flashing over the band members. A trumpet, saxophone, horn, guitar, and drum set accompany Suzi Quatro's bass guitar and vocals. The happy cries from the audience mingle with the drum beat and the hazy lights dance from musician to musician on stage. Suzi Quatro, looking like the rocker she is in black jeans and a black leather vest studded with metal spikes, steps on with her electric bass guitar and simultaneously belts out the lyrics to “Rock Hard” and plays the guitar part. Suzi Quatro has produced an astounding amount of music. Over the course of a forty plus year music career, she has released fifteen studio albums, from Suzi Quatro to In The Spotlight, eleven compilations/non studio albums, and fifty three singles. She has won multiple gold, silver, and bronze Bravo Otto rewards for female singers, and was selected as one of only twelve Queens of British Pop by BBC TV. Quatro's fame stems not only from her epic rock music, but also from the fact that she is the first female bass player to emerge as a leading rock star. This American musician revolutionized the woman's role in rock music. Today, after an extensive career touring the world, this rock goddess still puts on an exceptional show.

American rock singer/songwriter Suzi Quatro has a relatively universally recognised name due to enjoying hits in the 70s and 80s. She was labelled as one of the most evocative and aggressive women in rock in her heyday and although all these years later the snarl has faded, there is an indescribable attitude bubbling under the surface of Suzi's synonymous vocal.

She has some musicians onstage to aid her in recreating the rocking riffs of '48 Crash' and 'Devil Gate Drive' tonight yet she has a special power source in the audience who continuously energise the performance with cheers, bellowed choruses and rapturous applause. It is clear just how much they enjoy Suzi's music and her live show and this clearly means a lot to the performer. She thanks them for coming out tonight and recalls that no matter how many times she steps onto stage, it always feels like the best thing in the world. The sentiment is echoed by the fans who get to hear 'Can The Can'.

Gig review: SUZI QUATRO – Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

SUZI QUATRO- Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

Words like ‘icon’ should not be banded about lightly, but Suzi Quatro would be one of the few musical figures for whom that description is appropriate, as arguably the first woman artist to play an instrument and rock on level terms with the boys. Maybe we overlook that fact too easily, as in the half century since Mickie Most brought her to the UK, a varied career has taken her from seventies glam rock to acting, directing, broadcasting and writing, ensuring longevity but maybe at the expense of musical visibility.

My impression was that she was more popular in European markets than her adopted homeland, and I had not actually seen her since a gig in 1995 at the lamented Standard in Walthamstow. More recent shows have been on a package tour with other seventies pop acts so this was her first full length headline UK show in many years, and a perfect opportunity to remind people of that musical legacy, and what succeeding generations of women musicians in rock and pop owe to her.

SUZI QUATRO- Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

Her youthful face looked on from a backdrop of the orange poster used to promote the recent ‘Suzi Q’ documentary, but as she bounded on stage, it was clear the years have been kind to the contemporary Suzi, remarkably vibrant for someone who passed 70 last year.

‘The Wild One’ made for a perfect opener as she screamed the opening lyrics ‘All my life I wanted to be somebody and here I am’ which were perfectly apposite at this prestigious venue. I found myself instantly singing along though did feel the musical set up, with a horn section and girl backing singers, dampened the original raw edge.

SUZI QUATRO- Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

‘I May Be Too Young’ was another with autobiographical lyrics, and ‘Daytona Demon’ with guitarist Tim Smith sharing some of the vocals and Jez Davies’ barroom style piano keeping the tempo rolling along, then ‘Tear Me Apart’ completed an opening quartet of hits.

As she addressed the audience for the first time, saying she needed a man to make himself available, a gentleman at the front who put himself forward was then embarrassed when the song turned out to be ‘Mama’s Boy’, evidence of her playful but assertive humour that showed itself several times during the night.

SUZI QUATRO- Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

‘Stumblin’ In’ with its archetypal late seventies soft rock feel- and bizarrely the only top 40 single she had in her native USA- saw Tim fill the duet role of Chris Norman, another seventies pop legend who we see frustratingly little of here.  Then one of her classic glam era singles in ‘48 Crash’ – about the male menopause, who knew! – was fun but understandably one of the few where she wisely dropped the key and sang in more restrained fashion rather than attempt to scream if it was still 1973.

My delight at the set opening with seven hits in a row was tempered by the realisation hers has become a rather an unjustly forgotten catalogue with only a couple of the obvious ones ever played these days.

SUZI QUATRO- Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

She then brought things more up to date when son Richard – bearing a striking resemblance to his Dad Len Tuckey -  was brought on to add guitar to two songs he had written on recent albums for her, in ‘No Soul/No Control’ and ‘The Devil in Me’, both of which had a pleasingly contemporary alternative rock air.

The next guests were from a completely different generation: Sweet guitarist Andy Scott, sporting a magnificent silver mane and the foil for Suzi’s playful bossiness, and Slade’s Don Powell, still thwacking his kit with impressive power and a huge grin, reconvening their ‘QSP’ project for two songs, the traditional rock’ n’roll of ‘Slow Down’ and a surprise, but every effective cover of ‘Rocking In The Free World’. The first of two sets could not have then ended in more of a contrast, Suzi taking alone to keyboards for the intimate ‘Can I Be Your Girl’.

SUZI QUATRO- Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

After a half hour break, she re-emerged head to toe in trademark leather and opened with a pair of new songs from the ‘Devil In Me’ – ‘Motor City Riders’  was a lively tribute to her home city of Detroit and ’I Sold My Soul Today’ also had the garage rock vibe of that influential late sixties Michigan scene.

In contrast ‘Rock Hard’ was a guilty pleasure, reminding me of the commercialised boogie of Status Quo around that early eighties period. Though I was previously unfamiliar with that one, it was great to again hear ‘She’s In Love With You’ with that slight new wave feel.

SUZI QUATRO- Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

Each song was performed to a backdrop of the relevant album or single sleeve and the impression that this was a complete history of her musical legacy was enhanced when she even gave a speech with a little potted history of her life and career.

After her bass and Jez’s  keys traded the instrumental lines of famous songs, ‘Your Mama Won’t Like Me’  saw the whole band hit an impressively funky groove before they were introduced in the middle of ‘Too Big’,  where what Suzi cheekily called the ‘horny boys’ were prominent.

SUZI QUATRO- Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

‘Glycerine Queen’ was a glam era album track that again was new to me while after some jamming including her going into a drum duet, she implored a crowd that had been appreciative but rather reserved to finally get to their feet. The No 1’s ‘Can The Can’ and ‘Devil Gate Drive’ were always made for participation and the atmosphere for the latter in particular was insanely joyful.

The line between main set and encore was rather blurred as she went into possibly my favourite of hers, ‘If You Can’t Give Me Love’, where she orchestrated a mass waving of hands though the guitar line in the chorus was instead replaced by a sax break, before rocking out to ‘Sweet Little Rock n Roller’.

SUZI QUATRO- Royal Albert Hall, London, 20 April 2022

She walked off the stage as the band played out singing ‘go suzi go’, but any fears she would not take a proper bow were dispelled by one final surprise, as a stool was brought out and she returned to deliver quite brilliantly, with only keyboard accompaniment, a solo version of the Eagles ‘Desperado’.

It ended a night that was better than I ever dared expect. The time is right for the Suzi Q legacy to receive wider acclaim – and we heard during the evening a biopic is being prepared- so among all her other commitments I hope that this night inspires her to play headline shows more regularly in the UK.

SUZI QUATRO to headline ‘BY THE C’ Show with a star-studded supporting line-up

tickets on sale thursday 30th june at 10.00am (perth time).

28 June 2022 The Rockpit

suzi quatro world tour 2022

Since its inception,   BY THE C   has continued to deliver legends of the music world to some of the most scenic locations around the country.  This beachside festival event is set to be a great day out with live music and a vibrant setting. This year organisers are excited to also announce an international headliner for the first time in the festival’s history.  Headlined by the Queen of rock n roll herself, Suzi Quatro, with a massive line-up that includes a reformed Noiseworks, The Angels, Baby Animals, The Screaming Jets, and Chocolate Starfish, this   BY THE C   show is the biggest yet!

Organiser John Zaccaria says the opportunity to bring an incredible international act to WA and share this live music experience is an exciting one.   “BY THE C has become such a special and iconic event around Australia,” he says. “It captures all the best parts of the Australian summer with legendary live music in the sunshine and we see fans coming back year after year. We are stoked to be returning to Perth for the second time this year and even more so that Suzi Quatro will be joining us for the ride.”

Suzi Quatro   is the undisputable Queen of rock and roll. Following on from her April sold-out show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, where she received nothing short of outstanding reviews. She is running hotter than ever and is heading to Australia to headline   BY THE C   and   One Electric Day . Her show promises to be pedal to the floor jam-packed with hits, powerhouse vocals and unbridled energy. After selling over 55-million records (and counting), Suzi is pure rock royalty and every show is an unforgettable experience.

The return of   Noiseworks   is an exciting one for music fans. In the 1980s, they provided the soundtrack to every big night, with rock anthems   No Lies ,   Take Me Back ,   Hot Chilli Woman ,   Touch , and countless others. Get ready to rock as the original members reform to honour the memory of their co-founder and guitarist, the late, great, Stuart ‘Chet’ Fraser. Jon Stevens, Steve Balbi, Kevin Nicol and Justin Stanley will be joined by very special guest, Jack Jones on guitar and vocals. With the release of their new 2022 album along with all their legendary hits, Noiseworks will reignite a passion for rock n roll!

The Angels - Red Hot Summer Tour: Swan Valley 2020 | Photo Credit: Sharon Burgess

When it comes to great Aussie rock, it doesn’t come much better than   The Angels . It’s been almost five decades since brothers Rick and John Brewster co-founded the iconic band and have penned some of Australia’s most anthemic tracks. The Angels are widely reputed for their killer live shows. With hits like   Long Line ,   Marseille ,   Be With You ,   After the Rain ,   Shadow Boxer , and   Mr Damage   to name a few.

Baby Animals   burst onto the Australian scene in the 1990s with a solid rock force and a sassy lead singer. Suze DeMarchi proved that girls rock just as hard as guys and the Baby Animals soon kicked some impressive rock butt with hits such as   Rush You ,   Early Warning , and   One Word . Live review: Suzi Quatro at the Royal Albert Hall 20/4/22

Given I’d spent a good chunk of 2021 and the first part of 2022 living and breathing all things Suzi Quatro, the timing of the celebratory Royal Albert Hall concert  couldn’t have been more perfect. Coming, as it did, just weeks after getting the final draft of Suzi Quatro in the 1970s off to the publishers, Suzi’s gig at the Royal Albert Hall was something I’d been looking forward to for a long time.

There is no support tonight, just Suzi and her band in this packed iconic venue, performing two sets equally packed with hits and other highlights from across her fifty-year solo career. Kicking off with ‘The Wild One’, the hits rolled thick and fast: ‘I May Be Too Young’, ‘Daytona Demon’, ‘Tear Me Apart’, Mama’s Boy’, ‘Stumblin’ In’ and ’48 Crash’. The backing band is polished and versatile and sounding great – and if you’ve not encountered Suzi Quatro live for some considerable years or your main memories are of seeing her performing on Top Of The Pops, the band now encompasses a brass section and backing singers.

suzi quatro world tour 2022

We were promised some additional special guests, too, and I half-wondered whether Chris Norman would be brought on stage to reprise his role in ‘Stumblin’ In’ but it’s the guitarist, Tim, who gets to sing the duet instead. We don’t have to wait too long for the first special guest to appear, however, as Suzi brings up her guitarist son, Richard Tuckey, who worked with her on her two most recent albums, 2019’s No Control and last year’s The Devil In Me. Both albums picked up very favourable reviews at the time and together they perform a song from each. The mother and son dynamic works incredibly well, both in the studio and live on stage, recapturing the energy and raunch of Quatro’s early solo career and adding a contemporary edge. After the classic Chinn-Chapman glam era, this new Quatro/Tuckey partnership is fast becoming my next favourite chapter of Suzi’s long career.

We don’t have to wait long for the next set of special guests to appear, either. Paying tribute to the great bands that were around in the 1970s, Suzi welcomes her next two guests: Sweet’s Andy Scott and Slade’s Don Powell. The three worked together a few years ago, of course, releasing the excellent Quatro, Scott & Powell album back in 2017 and undertaking a successful tour of Australia. This will be the first time a British audience has had the chance to see the three perform together, however. Launching into ‘Slow Down’ from the trio’s album together they give us a gloriously energetic slice of 1950s rock and roll, followed by a blistering cover of Neil Young’s ‘Rockin’ In The Free World’. I do hope we get to see more of this glam-era power trio in the not too distant future.

In a complete change of pace, and to prove that she can do soft, emotive balladry as well as any of them, Suzi sits alone at the piano for the final song of the first set, a beautiful rendition of ‘Can I Be Your Girl’ from the Unreleased Emotion album which is dedicated to her mother and father.

The second half sees more vintage hits as well as more songs from the new album. Indeed, the set opens with that wonderful tribute to her Detroit home-town, ‘Motor City Riders’, from The Devil In Me. Although she will always be best known for the thumping, raucous sounds of the Chinn and Chapman early ‘70s hits, Suzi Quatro’s illustrious back catalogue explores a range of styles and genres. Suzi and the band delve into a number of these tonight, including the funk groove of ‘Your Mamma Won’t Like Me’, the heavily new wave -influenced ‘She’s In Love With You’ and the country rock of ‘If You Can’t Give Me Love’, as well as more traditional Quatro fayre in the form of ‘Can The Can’ and ‘Devil Gate Drive’.

By the time we hear these two, of course, it’s a sign that things are starting to draw to a close, sadly. There’s just time for a riotous rendition of Chuck Berry’s ‘Sweet Little Rock n Roller’ before a complete change of mood, once again, this time with a cover of the Eagles ‘Desperado’.

suzi quatro world tour 2022

Almost fifty years since she had her first big hit and almost forty years since I first saw her at Reading Festival when I was seventeen, Suzi Quatro gives a masterclass of a performance tonight. Still rocking, still singing, still pumping out those powerful bass sounds and still the consummate entertainer, Suzi Quatro definitely still has it.

1st - 4th August

Wickham Festival

Suzi Quatro

The iconic rock trailblazer Suzi Quatro will be headlining Wickham Festival on Friday 2nd August 2023 . She paved the way for a new generation of female rock stars in the 70s.  We really are over the moon to welcome Suzi and her fantastic band to the Wickham stage.  There’s no doubt that as far as live rock performances go, Suzi is up there with the all-time greats . We’re sure this will be a night to remember!  To date she has sold over 55 million records. Her hits include, Can the Can, 48 Crash , Too Big , Devil Gate Drive, Daytona Demon, The Wild One , She’s in Love With You, Mama’s Boy, If You Can’t Give Me Love, Rock Hard, and a million seller in the USA, Stumblin In a duet with Chris Norman .

She was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in a musical family with three sisters and one brother, who all played various instruments. Suzi herself made her debut on stage playing bongo’s in her fathers jazz band, The Art Quatro trio.

From an early age she studied classical piano and percussion, then aged 14, began an all-girl band with elder sister Patti  called The Pleasure Seekers . Suzi was ‘told’ she would be playing bass guitar, which was as tall as her! She quickly became the lead singer and front person.

The band toured successfully for 7 years releasing a few singles along the way.  They changed their name to Cradle in 1969. It was in this band, a couple of years later, that Mickie Most (a producer behind scores of hit singles for acts such as the Animals, Herman’s Hermits, Donovan, and many others) came to a Cradle concert one night and offered Suzi a solo contract. Since then she never looked back and flew to England in 1971 to begin her journey to fame. When Mickie asked her what she’d like to wear to promote Can the Can she said “leather” which he thought was old-fashioned. But she stuck to her guns and THE look was born …

Soon after Suzi began working with now legendary songwriters Chinn and Chapman (Mike Chapman also produced). This resulted in the huge hit, Can the Can, which topped the charts in May 1973, and went on to sell two and a half million copies worldwide .

Between 1973 and 1980 Suzi featured in the British charts for no less than 101 weeks.  She has sold to date over 55 million records , and still counting.

As the 1970s drew to a close, Suzi spread her wings and landed a part on the worldwide hit TV  show, ‘Happy Days’, playing Leather Tuscadero opposite Henry Winkler and Ron Howard .

She continued to act in other shows including Minder, Dempsey and Makepeace, Absolutely Fabulous, and Midsomer Murders. In 1986 Suzi made her West End debut playing the leading role of Annie Oakley in Irving Berlin’s ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ for which she received great critical acclaim. 1988 saw Suzi spread her wings again as she hosted her own talk show called ‘Gas Street’ which ran for a year.

In 1989 Suzi was one of the first rock and roll acts to go to Russia where she performed for over half a million people in just six weeks. In 1991 Suzi was triumphant again when realised a lifelong ambition by co-writing the music and lyrics to ‘Talullah Who?’, a musical about notorious actress Tallulah Bankhead. She also starred in this production.

1999 saw Suzi start her radio career with BBC Radio 2 , which is ongoing today. Suzi has done her own weekly programs, and many special documentaries including Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Patsy Cline, and a recent special on her home town of Detroit. Suzi has met, interviewed or played on stage with most of her hero’s. She was nominated for music broadcaster of the year at the Sony radio awards in 2006. 1999 also saw Suzi honoured in ‘This Is Your Life’, with Michael Aspel and the famous red book.

In 2006 Suzi released the autobiographical album, “Back to the Drive”… which has become a fans favourite worldwide. Suzi also made an appearance alongside Charles Dance in the theatre in a play called “Exonerated at this time”. Unzipped, Suzi’s Autobiograpy was released in 2007 and has done extremely well worldwide.

In 2014, to celebrate her 50 years in the business, BBC Radio 2 featured this show as part of their Christmas schedule taped at the BBC Radio Theatre. It was prime time 2 hours long, unzipped, turning into a mini concert at the end, and was attended by such luminaries as Bruce Welch (The Shadows) and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Suzi did a 23 date sell out tour of Australia in 2015 , her 32th tour of this country. It was to be her *final* tour of the Australia.  But this decision was turned around about a year later when she realised she was nowhere near retiring and promised her audience to NEVER use the f-word again.. (final)

suzi quatro world tour 2022

In may 2017, she headlined a ‘Legends’ Arena tour in the UK , along with Hot Chocolate , The Osmonds and David Essex.  In 2019 her documentary, “ Suzi Q ” was released. It has been featured on CNN, Entertainment Tonight, Golden Globes Page, Billboard, Rolling Stone and Variety just to name a few.

It is a warts and all, raw and real film, and because of the attention it has received she has now signed to do a movie of her life. The script is nearing completion and a list of names has been drawn up to play Suzi.

In 2021 she released a second album, with her son, ‘The Devil in Me’, which also charted around the world. In 2022 she released ‘Uncovered’ on the Sun Record label.  This release has six of her favorite cover songs including James Brown’s “The Boss”, Carole King’s “I Feel The Earth Move”, and Rufus Thomas’s “Walking The Dog”.  There will soon be a live stream of this which will be a one time only chance to see her play these track live.

Last year she released her duet album ‘Face to Face’ with Wickham Festival favourite, singer/songwriter and guitarist Kt Tunstall .’ This has charted in numerous terriorities around the world, even getting in to the top 10. It was album of the week on BBC Radio 2 , and picked up the ‘Album of the Year’ award, presented by Jools Holland. It has impressed critics with tracks like Shine A Light and Overload …

As Suzi said in one of her interviews , “ people aren’t liking this album, they are loving it “.  Track samples and links to purchase Face to Face can be found here .

2023 marked the 50th anniversay of Can the Can being number one .  Throughout this time Suzi is never idle … she must entertain, she must create, and she must communicate. Her famous quote says it all…

A Top 10 hit upon its release in 1971 as a trimmed down three-minute single, to truly understand the brilliance of 'Won't Get Fooled Again' you have to listen to the sprawling eight-and-a-half-minute album version. Pete Townshend wrote 'Won't Get Fooled Again' as a critique about power and revolution, and the song is loosely broken down into three thematic parts – the uprising in the first verse, the overthrow of power in the middle, and the new regime being a replica of the old regime later in the song, hence lines like "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

19) Deep Purple – ‘Child in Time’ (1970)

Loosely inspired by the Cold War and themes of inhumanity, Deep Purple's progressive rock opus is a musical odyssey of the highest calibre. Embracing the quiet/loud dynamic, throughout the all-too-short 10 minutes each band member is at the top of the game - from Ritchie Blackmore's searing riffs to Ian Gillan's emotionally wrought (and oft screeching) vocals to Jon Lord's ominous organs to the pulsing rhythms of Roger Glover and Ian Paice. A monumental and magnificent rock epic.

18) Metallica – ‘Enter Sandman’ (1991)

The opening track and lead single from Metallica's 1991 self-titled album (aka 'The Black Album'), 'Enter Sandman' opens with Kirk Hammett's plaintive guitar playing before crushing guitars and sonic fury are unleashed on the listener. True it's not as raw as some of Metallica's earlier songs, but 'Enter Sandman' is a heavy metal masterclass that fuses nightmarish lyrics with thunderous music and searing riffs.

17) Led Zeppelin – ‘Whole Lotta Love’ (1969)

Colossal sounding, dirty-as-hell, gloriously lewd and sonically experimental, 'Whole Lotta Love' needs very little introduction. Jimmy Page's iconic riff is one of the purest and most timeless riffs he ever created with Led Zeppelin, while John Paul Jones and John Bonham give the track poise, rhythm and muscle. However, it's Robert Plant who manages to grab the headlines with his sexually charged and highly lascivious lines like "Way down inside", "I'm gonna give you every inch of my love" and, of course, "I wanna be your backdoor man!"

16) Motörhead – ‘Ace of Spades’ (1980)

Motörhead purists might argue that there are better songs in the band's formidable musical arsenal, but 'Ace of Spades' is easily Lemmy, Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor and "Fast" Eddie Clarke's most popular and enduring tracks. Pure musical alchemy, 'Ace of Spades' opens with Lemmy's pummelling bass intro before crashing drums and whirring guitars enter the fray and Mr Kilmeister spouts gambling themed lyrics in his idiosyncratic guttural growl. Exhilarating and electric.

15) AC/DC – ‘Highway to Hell’ (1979)

The second highest placing Bon Scott-era AC/DC song on our countdown, 'Highway to Hell' is three-and-a-half minutes of primal, powerful and perfect guitar-drive rock. Like so many riffs in AC/DC's legendary repertoire, Angus Young's riff is truly timeless, while Bon Scott is at his commanding best. With 'Highway to Hell', AC/DC once again proved that simplicity is often the key to rock n' roll brilliance.

14) AC/DC – ‘Thunderstruck’ (1990)

Powered by scintillating riffs from Angus and Malcolm Young, rabble-rousing chants, screeching vocals from Brian Johnson and muscular rhythms from Chris Slade and Cliff Williams, 'Thunderstruck' is the sound of AC/DC at their most electrifying and one of the standout moments of the post-Bon Scott era. Such is its popularity, 'Thunderstruck' was the first AC/DC track to surpass one billion views on YouTube.

13) Gun N’ Roses – ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ (1987)

Of course, it wouldn't be a Greatest Rock Song poll without Gun N' Roses' signature song 'Sweet Child O' Mine' rearing its head. The 'Appetite for Destruction' anthem is so all-pervading and ubiquitous that even Slash says he "cringes" when he hears his iconic riff in public, however, ignoring the over-exposure, there's no doubt that 'Sweet Child O' Mine' is a rock classic.

12) Iron Maiden – ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ (1982)

Iron Maiden's fifth song to appear on our countdown is 'The Number of the Beast' classic 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'. Performed on every Iron Maiden tour – except the Maiden England World Tour and The Book of Souls World Tour – for the past four decades, the Steve Harris penned seven-minute epic details the macabre story of a prisoner about the be hanged. Not only is it one of Iron Maiden's greatest songs from their legendary back catalogue, it's also one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

11) Deep Purple – ‘Smoke on the Water’ (1972)

Ritchie Blackmore's instantly recognisable guitar riff on 'Smoke on the Water' was voted the Greatest Rock Riff of All Time by Planet Rock listeners five years ago, and the seminal song has duly been voted into the Top 20 on our new poll. Blackmore noted years later that he took inspiration from Symphony No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven, and he owes the deceased composer a lot of money. Thematically, 'Smoke on the Water' was inspired by the devastating fire at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland in December 1971 where the band had decamped to record what would become their sixth album, 'Machine Head.'

10) Meat Loaf – ‘Bat Out of Hell’ (1977)

The opening track on Meat Loaf's debut album of the same name, as statements of intent go, they don't get much better than 'Bat Out of Hell.' The brilliantly bombastic track's lyrics were described as "a rock 'n roll sci-fi version of Peter Pan" by songwriter Jim Steinman, while musically it's gloriously overblown and the perfect vehicle for the late-great Meat Loaf's theatrical and impossibly powerful voice. An irrefutable rock magnum opus.

9) AC/DC – ‘Back in Black’ (1980)

Opening with one of the greatest riffs in rock history, AC/DC's title track from their blockbuster 'Back in Black' album was written in response to the death of Bon Scott. New frontman Brian Johnson was asking not to be morbid when penning the lyrics, and, duly, the track is a celebration of the rock legend. Johnson noted years later: "I just wrote what came into my head, which at the time seemed like mumbo, jumbo. 'Nine lives. Cats eyes. Abusing every one of them and running wild.' The boys got it though. They saw Bon's life in that lyric."

8) AC/DC – ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ (1977)

The seventh AC/DC song to feature in our Top 70 is the band's riff-heavy hard rock anthem 'Whole Lotta Rosie.' Written by Angus Young, Bon Scott, Malcolm Young, 'Whole Lotta Rosie' details a mind-blowing one-night stand Scott had with a Tasmanian woman called Rosie. A mainstay of AC/DC's live shows since it was released (only 'The Jack' has been performed live more), more recent performances of 'Whole Lotta Rosie' have featured a giant inflatable Rosie on the stage's backdrop.

7) Alter Bridge - ‘Blackbird’ (2007)

The only song from the 21st Century to feature in our Top 20, 'Blackbird' is the crowning glory of Alter Bridge's second studio album and arguably the highpoint of their illustrious career so far. Lyrically poignant, Myles Kennedy wrote the lyrics for 'Blackbird' about the death of his close friend Mark Morse. Kennedy said: "It's really about seeing the suffering he was going through and hoping he would find his solace soon and be free from all of that." The eight-minute track also features a colossal guitar solo from both Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti that was voted the third greatest guitar solo ever by Planet Rock listeners in 2019.

6) Led Zeppelin – ‘Kashmir’ (1975)

The towering musical behemoth that is 'Kashmir' is Led Zeppelin's second-highest polling song from their fabled back catalogue. A track so good that it has you thumbing at the thesaurus looking for suitable superlatives, it's no surprise that the surviving members of Led Zeppelin regard 'Kashmir' as one of their career zeniths. Jimmy Page said of the track: "The intensity of 'Kashmir' was such that when we had it completed, we knew there was something really hypnotic to it, we couldn't even describe such a quality…. It sounded so frightening at first."

5) Pink Floyd - ‘Comfortably Numb’ (1979)

David Gilmour's transcendental playing on Pink Floyd's 'Comfortably Numb' was voted the Greatest Guitar Solo of All Time by Planet Rock listeners in 2019, and the song itself is rightfully in the upper echelons of our Greatest Rock Songs poll at Number 5. Penned by Roger Waters and David Gilmour, 'Comfortably Numb' is one of the defining moments of their songwriting partnership, yet such was the friction between the two during the recording process that Gilmour later noted it represents "the last embers of mine and Roger's ability to work collaboratively together." Poignantly, 'Comfortably Numb' was the last song Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and the late-great Richard Wright performed together at Live Aid in 2005.

4) Lynyrd Skynyrd – ‘Free Bird’ (1973)

The only Lynyrd Skynyrd to make our Top 70, the Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins penned 'Free Bird' is the band's signature song and truly one of the finest tracks in rock history. Delivered in Van Zant's trademark southern rock drawl, the track opens with him singing "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?", hinting at a man unable to settle down. Just past the midway point, 'Free Bird' morphs into a crescendo of glorious guitar solos and frenetic instrumentation – an life-affirming aural onslaught that still sounds as fresh now as it did almost half a century ago.

3) Rainbow – ‘Stargazer’ (1976)

The standout song from Rainbow's seminal 'Rising' album, 'Stargazer' sees the inimitable, late-great Ronnie James Dio narrate the ominous story of a wizard whose attempt to fly by constructing a tower to the stars leads to the enslavement of countless people. A musically complex, powerful and majestic heavy metal tour-de-force, 'Stargazer' flaunts the imperious talents of the respective Rainbow band members, from Dio's astonishing pipes to Cozy Powell's titanic drums to Ritchie Blackmore's mercurial guitar playing. Nothing short of a masterpiece.

2) Led Zeppelin – ‘Stairway To Heaven’ (1971)

Number 2 on our Greatest Led Zeppelin Songs poll in September 2018 to mark the band's 50th anniversary, 'Stairway To Heaven' is also at No.2 in our Greatest Rock Song poll. Clocking in at just over eight minutes, every second of 'Stairway To Heaven' is iconic; from the opening, Renaissance-tinged finger-picked guitars and recorders to Jimmy Page's legendary solo and right through to Robert Plant's ultimate, plaintive "and she's buying the stairway to heaven" refrain. A true timeless classic that will be listened to in centuries to come.

1) Queen – ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (1975)

Having previously finished at No.2 in our previous Greatest Rock Song poll a decade ago , Queen's timeless and ubiquitous rock epic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has climbed to Number 1 in 2022. Multi-layered and ambitious in musical scope, the Freddie Mercury penned 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has topped the charts twice in the UK and has been introduced to new generations of fans via 1992's Wayne's World and the 2018 Queen biopic of the same name, Bohemian Rhapsody.
