What to Expect

With an entertaining crew, beaming wildlife, fantastic views and a bar on board for those 21 and older, what is not to love about this popular boat tour?

The Intracoastal (ICW) or Tolomato/Matanzas River here in St. Augustine is home to a plethora of wildlife, including birds, dolphins, manatees, turtles, and much more. The dolphins that we see here year-round call this bay their home. We regularly witness all types of behaviors like playing, hunting, breeding, and caring for their young!

This tour is considered a wildlife watch, where we take you on a guided adventure through the ICW to the best areas to view the most amazing wildlife. Our professional guides are marine naturalists and make this a really fun and enjoyable experience for young kids and adults while you learn about the natural beauty these Florida waters have to offer.

Although this is a wildlife tour, we do have a lot of history and famous landmarks here in St. Augustine! Sometimes the dolphins and other wildlife bring us to the bayfront, where we can view the historic landmarks from the water, but this is not the main part of this tour. We have other tours throughout the day that focus on the history but still allow you to see wildlife in the water! Check out our Wine Tasting Cruise or the Sunset Cruise if that is more your style.

• After booking your cruise, you will receive a confirmation email with important information.
• Check in is 15 min prior to tour time.
• We depart from the Camachee Cove Marina.
• Plenty of Free Parking is available.
• Enjoy a comfortable 90 min. cruise on our 45′ pontoon boat called the Osprey or our 30′ pontoon boat the Island Breeze ! The Osprey has a bar on board for those 21 and over, including mimosas and an excellent variety of beer, wine and canned cocktails! No outside alcoholic beverages permitted on this vessel. The Island Breeze is BYOB, please feel free to bring your favorite beverages on this vessel. Water, soft drinks and snacks are also available for purchase on both boat, please feel free to bring your own snacks! Cash or card accepted. Our calendar will tell you which boats are available on the day/time you choose!

Welcome to St. Augustine Scenic Cruise!!

Since the 1900’s St. Augustine Scenic Cruise has been giving visitors to St. Augustine a unique view of the city and a way to enjoy St. Augustine’s historic land marks and natural beauty.

The Usina’s were among settlers from the island of Minorca, located off the coast of Spain, finally settling in St. Augustine in 1777. Many of their descendants remain in St. Augustine today. In 1900 Captain Frank Usina and his wife, Catherine, could not return to Miami were he had been working as a carpenter on the Miami train station because of an outbreak of yellow fever.

They settled in the area known today as North Beach, then accessible only by boat. Henry Flagler approached Frank and his wife, asking them to hold oyster roasts for friends and guests staying at his Ponce De Leon Hotel, now Flagler College, and the Alcazar Hotel, now the Lightner Museum. The outings to North Beach became a regular attraction, and thus, the family boat business was born. Initially starting with a chartered launch, Frank ferried guests to and from North Beach for Minorcan Style dinners, oysters, music, dancing and sightseeing along the Matanzas Bay. Shortly thereafter, Frank purchased a 45′ launch stuck on a mud bar. He repaired, refinished and christened it the Victory , replacing the chartered launch, but remaining at the helm as Captain.

Sea Turtles in St. Augustine Waters

When you’re joining us for a boat tour, you might get lucky and spot sea turtles before we even leave the dock on any one or our daytime tours and evening tours . We’re fortunate to have three sea turtle species that make St. Augustine waters and the Northeast Florida coast home. The Green sea turtle, the Loggerhead, and the Leatherback all call this stretch of coastline home.

Green Sea Turtles

The Green sea turtle (like the one pictured above) is one of the species you might spot near our docking location, as they prefer the protected waters of the coast, particularly where they can feed on sea grass beds. You’ll rarely spot a Green sea turtle in the open waters of the ocean.

Fun Fact : Green sea turtles get their name from the green fat under their shell.

Loggerhead Turtles

Like Green sea turtles, Loggerhead turtles like to feed in protected waters such as estuaries. Unlike Greens, however, Loggerheads are primarily carnivorous, preferring to munch on shellfish. They also like the shallow waters of continental shelves of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans.

Fun Fact : Like the Green sea turtle, Loggerheads get their name from a physical feature. For these guys, it’s their really big head.

Leatherback Turtles

Unlike the Green and Loggerhead turtles, the Leatherback is more at home in the open ocean, so we’re unlikely to spot one on our route through Salt Run and the Matanzas Bay. While they have been found feeding near shore, they tend to stick to open waters feeding on jellyfish.

Fun Fact : Like the Green and Loggerheads, the Leatherback gets its common name from a very unique physical feature. As described by the Sea Turtle Conservancy in its profile of the Leatherback , it’s unusual shell “is composed of a layer of thin, tough, rubbery skin, strengthened by thousands of tiny bone plates.”

Helping Sea Turtles

As with many marine species, sea turtles face a number of challenges in the wild. We can all do a little bit to help, though. Check out these ways to assist our sea turtle friends:

• Participate in Adopt-A-Nest . We’re really proud to be a 2019 corporate sponsor of the Adopt-a-Nest program from the Friends of Anastasia State Park. With turtle nesting taking place right in our local park, you can have a direct impact as an individual or a business by supporting this program.
• Learn the Do’s and Don’ts of Nesting Season . Northeast Florida is an important nesting site for all three of our native species with turtle nesting season lasting from May 1 through October 31. St. John’s County has a helpful Sea Turtle Guide to assist you.
• Check Out the Sea Turtle Conservancy . This is a great organization supporting species throughout the world. Its website has lots of information, including a list of simple ways to help .
• Be Aware When Boating . Turtles are pretty fast in the water, but boat strikes do occur. Keep an eye out and stick to channels, while avoiding boating over sea grass beds and shallow areas.
