Testimonials

Six out of five-stars.

A truly unforgettable adventure in the highly capable hands of Kiddi (Halldor), who, with his knowledge of the country and a great sense of humour deserves a six-star rating! We had a great time ful l of thrills and a little fear, touring around, taking in Geysir, lakes, mountains, continental divides, volcanos, experiencing a 6.3 earthquake, seeing beautiful waterfalls, awesome scenery, delicious lamb stew, walking on a pure white glacier against a backdrop of clear blue skies and more! We also showered under the northern lights - a truly AMAZING experience!

NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL®

Fjords in norway, gamla stan (old town of stockholm), royal palace of stockholm, flåm railway (flåmsbana).

A day-by-day plan to guide your Nordic adventure.

Day 1: WELCOME TO SWEDEN

When you arrive at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, make your way to Stockholm city centre. Many travellers opt to take the express train to Stockholm Central Station, but we also offer direct private transfers. After settling in at your hotel, spend the day exploring the beautiful city. Stroll the well-known street Drottninggatan where you can shop and feel the vibe of the capital city. Go for a walk in the surrounding area of Östermalm , where you will find interesting shops, cafés, and restaurants for a perfect introduction to Scandinavian culture. It could be fun to pick a cafe and experience Swedish "fika", an afternoon tea or coffee.

Spend the night in Stockholm.

Day 2: THE CHARMS OF SWEDISH CULTURE

Today you will explore the heart of scenic Stockholm. We recommend exploring the capital by foot, visiting attractions such as the Old Town (Gamla Stan) , where you will find the Royal Palace , the parliament, old churches, beautiful cobble stone streets and medieval houses.

After some time at Gamla Stan, you can take a short ferry ride to the nearby island Djurgården , a cultural oasis with something for everyone. Here you will find the kitschy Abba Museum , the Nordic Museum , the Gröna Lund amusement park, and the Skansen open-air museum. It is ideal to spend the afternoon here, exploring the grounds and many attractions.

Day 3: TRAVEL FROM STOCKHOLM TO LOVELY COPENHAGEN

Today you will take a short flight to Copenhagen . After settling in at your hotel, go for a walk along the enchanting old harbour area of Nyhavn , where you will see colourful houses and lively restaurants among the docked boats. Walk the narrow side streets, visit some shops and try out the traditional Danish open-faced sandwich, Smørrebrød. In the evening, visit the amusement park Tivoli Gardens , which has something for everyone. It’s a lovely place to admire the architecture and gardens and to enjoy some carnival rides.

Spend the night in Copenhagen.

*For those interested, we offer the option of travelling by train instead of flight between Stockholm and Denmark. For more details click the optional activities.

Day 4: A DAY IN CAPTIVATING COPENHAGEN

You have the whole day to explore Copenhagen . We recommend seeing the city by foot, visiting landmarks including Amalienborg Palace, Christiansborg Palace, and the famous Little Mermaid statue. An optional cruise from the harbour is also highly recommended as you can appreciate the architecture and beauty of the city by water. Next, stroll Ströget street for some shopping and grab something to eat at Torvehallerne food hall.

Day 5: SET SAIL FOR NORWAY

Spend the morning touring Copenhagen. Some interesting attractions include the observatory of The Round Tower , the most famous church in Copenhagen, Church of Our Saviour , as well as the impeccable King’s Garden, and the regal Rosenborg Castle . In the early afternoon, it’s time to board your cruise to Oslo, which sails gently up the Kattegat Sund on its way to Norway’s capital city. You can enjoy dinner in one of the restaurants, check out the entertainment on board or just relax and watch the sunset from the deck.

Spend the night on the cruise.

Day 6: ENJOY ENCHANTING OSLO

After the cruise ship docks, get ready to see the best of Oslo. The city is quite walkable and recommend exploring by foot and the convenience of public transport. Notable attractions include the beautiful  Vigeland Sculpture Park , Fram Polar Ship Museum and spending some time along the beautiful harbour area. Other interesting stops include the Munch Museum ,  Royal Palace ,  Akershus Fortress , and  Oslo City Hall.

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 7: NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL - THE FLÅM RAILWAY

Get ready for the spectacular Norway in a Nutshell® railway journey towards Bergen, with an overnight stop in  Flåm . This train ride takes you over Norway’s “mountainous rooftops”, through charming villages like Gol and  Geilo , before reaching Myrdal, where you’ll switch trains to the famous  Flåm Railway  (Flåmsbana) for an incredible ride to the beautiful village of Flåm. Enjoy a relaxing day in Flåm, where you can follow one of the many hiking trails in the mountains around the village, or participate in an optional activity, such as kayaking, fjord sightseeing or visiting the Stegastein platform.

Spend the night in Flåm.

We recommend booking luggage transfer for the travel between Oslo and Bergen.

Day 8: NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL TO BERGEN

In the morning, you’ll board a boat to sail through  Aurlandsfjord  into the World Heritage-listed Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in all of Europe. This is perhaps the most beautiful arm of  Sognefjord , with its mighty waterfalls and small farms clinging to the steep mountainsides. The boat docks in Gudvangen, from where you’ll be transported by bus to  Voss  to board the train for the last stretch of the journey to  Bergen .

Spend the night in Bergen.

Day 9: THE CAPITAL OF THE FJORDS

Despite being an international city, Bergen, “The Capital of the Fjords”, has all the charms of a small town. Here you’ll find  Bryggen , a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with remarkably preserved old houses, a lively fish and flower market, cable cars offering stunning views, great museums and more. We recommend riding the  Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen to enjoy the panoramic views over the city or a cable car up Mt. Ulriken. Bergen is also known for its museums dedicated to history about trade and fisheries, architecture, music and contemporary art.

Spend another night in Bergen.

Day 10: DEPARTURE FROM BERGEN

When it’s time for your trip to come to an end, make your way to Bergen-Flesland Airport. You can either take the airport bus from one of the many departure points in the Bergen city centre or you can take a taxi directly from your hotel to Bergen-Flesland Airport. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can choose to enjoy some last-minute shopping, visit one of Bergen‘s many museums or relax at a café, enjoying the last few moments of this amazing journey.

For those departing from Oslo, we offer direct train transfer back to Oslo. Please keep in mind you might need to book an additional night if your flight is early in the day.

Optional extras

We recommend adding your extra activities to the tour now for the best booking experience and to secure your spot, as activities are likely to sell out.

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Very easy process

We found the whole process very easy. The instructions and information provided was clear and made it easy to find hotels and transport links. The hotels were centrally located, close to transport links but were not noisy. Our personal travel consultant was very helpful and friendly. We liked the recommendations suggested in the daily itinerary.

Hazel, United Kingdom

Best of scandinavia classic, september 2023.

We can't say enough about our trip. Nordic Visitor was there when we needed them, accommodation were wonderful, couldn't have been better.

Thomas, United States

Best of scandinavia classic, august 2023, marvelous itinerary.

The itinerary was marvelous and instructions quite clear and efficent. Accommodation were the best. My room in Flåm was out of this world.  It was worth every penny and with your help I was able to be on time for every trip and find the hotels and locations properly.  The guide for the staff's recommended places was spot on and I enjoyed myself a lot.

Cristina, Mexico

Very grateful for the service.

Porter Services was supposed to transport our luggage from Oslo to Bergen, but their staff transported the wrong luggage! However, Nordic Visitor's "after hour" staff (particularly Anton) and your representative Liza were very helpful in tracking the luggage down and seeing that it made it to Bergen before our travel back to the United States. We are very grateful for your help and service! Liza also immediately submitted a refund to us for costs of the transport service, which was much appreciated gesture.

Diane, United States

Exceeded our expectations.

Our experience exceeded our expectations. The accommodation were terrific and close to everything we wanted to do. Malgorzata arranged everything and was responsive to our questions.

Robert, United States

We travelled to 3 Nordic countries, with a variety of accommodation and transport all of which was well organised and easily accessed. Our trip included Norway in a Nutshell which even though this part was very busy, all worked very well. Due to the weather, we had to change one train journey at short notice to plane travel and this was done by Nordic Visitor staff very promptly and successfully. We were impressed by this.

Brian, Australia

Tour Information

We recommend that all Nordic Visitor travellers read through the following information about our self-guided tours, travelling with the DFDS ship, boarding flights or trains, and other useful information for your travels.

OUR SELF-GUIDED TOURS This is an independent, self-guided tour. All accommodation, train, flight, cruise and ferry tickets (as specified in the itinerary) will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor, but travellers are ultimately responsible for getting to hotels and to any airport, train or ferry departure points by the specified times.

DFDS FERRY The overnight ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo includes cabin accommodation (comfort or quality cabin with a window) with private facilities, and breakfast is included. There are two ships operating the route, Pearl Seaways and Crown Seaways, and each ship can accommodate approximately 1.800 passengers. On board you find restaurants, bars, shopping and activities.

  • Departure from Copenhagen: 14:15
  • Arrival in Oslo: 09:15

FLIGHT FROM STOCKHOLM TO COPENHAGEN Included in the package is a flight between Stockholm and Copenhagen. The direct flight takes approximately 1h10 min. Baggage allowance per person is 20kg per checked bag and 8 kg per carry-on bag. Most days offer flights at mid-day but in some cases, you may be booked on a morning or evening flight. Your travel consultant will book the best option for your travel dates. Please note that airport transfer from your hotel in Stockholm to the airport is not included nor the train from Copenhagen airport to the hotel. We recommend Arlanda Express Train, a short 18-minute train ride to the airport from city center.

WOULD YOU RATHER TAKE THE TRAIN? If you prefer to travel from Stockholm to Copenhagen by rail instead of flying, we would be happy to arrange that for you. In the summer months, the trains conduct track maintenance and there might be changes in the route and extending the journey from the standard duration of 5 hours and 10 minutes. The train tickets might not be bookable until 30 days prior departure. In the meantime, we will book the rest of the travel arrangements for you. Please select the train option during the booking steps online.

NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL® TOUR

This tour includes the famous Norway in a Nutshell® tour from Oslo to Bergen. This is one of Norway’s most iconic journeys. You’ll travel by train, bus and ferry, seeing beautiful landscapes of steep mountains, cascading waterfalls, shimmering fjords, charming villages and scenic coastline.

The first leg of the journey is from Oslo to Flåm. Then you'll be travelling from Flåm to Bergen. The duration of both days will be around 6 hours.

The connections will be announced and clearly explained in your travel documents. You will receive a ticket with all the information about transfer points and timings with your final travel documents.

There are places to store your luggage whether you are travelling by bus, train or ferry. Please be aware that if you do not book an optional luggage transfer in advance, you will have to carry your luggage yourself from train to bus to boat etc.

WHAT TO PACK

  • If booking the additional luggage transfer - an overnight bag for the stay in Flåm
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Light gloves, hat and scarf
  • Lip balm and moisturiser
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen

CURRENCY RATE All bookings are charged in Euros (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and are based on the daily exchange rate. Therefore, conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

AFTER BOOKING WITH NORDIC VISITOR After booking your package with Nordic Visitor, you will be contacted within two working days by one of our travel consultants, who will serve as your dedicated contact person for all your travel needs before, during and even after your holiday. Your travel consultant will provide you with details about your booking and your remaining payment (if not paid in full). ABOUT ROVANIEMI

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and the official hometown of Santa Claus. Located in the southern part of Lapland, it is easily accessible by train, bus or plane from Helsinki. Every year, millions of tourists visit Rovaniemi to enjoy its beautiful Winter landscape, experience its Christmas atmosphere and meet its most famous resident, Santa Claus!

Because Rovaniemi is a popular destination, you may need to book long in advance your accommodations and activities (especially in December).  Also, you will easily find many tour operators to organise a guided safari but we recommend to carefully select the tour operator as you may easily end up in big coaches with hundreds of tourists…

Overall, Rovaniemi is a great location to start a long trip around Lapland (this is why most of our trips depart from there). If your time is limited, this is also a good destination where you will find a lot of activity options to experience Lapland.

Sermermiut Valley

A day-by-day plan to guide your arctic adventure.

Day 1:  Flight to Greenland With Iceberg Views

Board your flight from Iceland to the charming Arctic village of Ilulissat, situated at the mouth of the 46 km-long Ilulissat Icefjord – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On sunny days, this flight path offers wonderful views over the magnificent Greenland Glacier.

After landing at the Ilulissat Airport, you will be transferred to your accommodation where you will spend the next four nights. You'll also enjoy a guided city walk to get to know the town then an included 2-course dinner at your hotel.

Day 2:  Explore Ilulissat and the Icefjord as You Wish

For your time in Ilulissat you are free to design your own adventure! You can choose from a wide range of exciting optional excursions, including a helicopter ride over icebergs, village walks, whale watching safaris or a visit to the small, remote settlements in the area. We recommend that you use your first full day to learn about the town of Ilulissat on a guided city walk (optional) or explore the surroundings on your own.

Note: We recommend booking the optional activities in advance through your travel consultant at Nordic Visitor, though you may also book activities at your hotel in Ilulissat during your stay.

Day 3: Enjoying Adventure in the Arctic

Today you can add to your travel package an overnight stay at one of the surrounding settlements or at the incredible Eqi Glacier (optional). The options are to spend the night at the Ilimanaq settlement, which is a short boat ride from Ilulissat. There you can learn about the history of the small village, its few inhabitants, explore the beautiful nature in the region and stay in one of the cosy cabins available. The other option is to spend the night at Port Victor by Eqi Sermia Glacier, where you can enjoy the view of the glacial tongue, with the possibility of witnessing huge chunks of ice break away and calve in the ocean. You can also spend the day enjoying one of the many day tours offered by our local operator and spend the night in Ilulissat.

Day 4: Free time in Ilulissat

Enjoy another day for fun optional activities in Ilulissat. For a truly incredible experience, we recommend an evening boat tour in the Icefjord, where you will sail among towering icebergs as big as office buildings under the rosy glow of the midnight sun. And for hiking enthusiasts, the Sermermiut Valley just a few kilometres from town, offering spectacular views from several well-marked trails.

Day 5:  Afternoon Departure to Iceland

Today it’s time to say goodbye to this majestic vast island, but you still have time to take a walk around the village or do some last-minute souvenir shopping. On the return flight to Reykjavík, enjoy the stunning views once again over the Ilulissat Icefjord and its surrounding landscapes.

Here’s a map of your travel route, to help put things in perspective.

Day 1: ARRIVAL IN BERGEN

On arrival at Bergen Flesland Airport, you will pick up your rental car. Then drive to  Bergen ’s city centre, where your hotel for the night is located. For those arriving early, we recommend spending the afternoon strolling the city and exploring the lovely sights of scenic Bergen. City highlights include the old wharf of  Bryggen – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an interesting range of museums, as well as the city’s vibrant fish and flower market. For a good overview of Bergen, we recommend taking the “ Fløibanen ” funicular up the mountainside, which reveals spectacular views.

Spend the night in Bergen.

Day 2: EXPERIENCE THE FJORDS BY CAR

Start the first leg of your self-drive trip by heading to Norway’s adventure capital,  Voss , which is home to the beautiful Tvindefossen waterfall. Your journey will then continue to Sogndal along the  Sognefjord – Norway’s longest and deepest fjord – taking in sights including the towns of  Stalheim , before reaching the beautiful  Aurlandsfjord  and the town of  Flåm .

We recommend stopping in Flåm and riding the renowned Flåmsbana railway, a steep train ride between Flåm and Myrdal – a treat for photographers or train enthusiasts alike! A stop at  Stegastein viewpoint  is recommended, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Aurlandsfjord .  You will then take a short ferry ride before driving towards Sogndal, where you will spend the night.

Spend the night in Sogndal.

Day 3: SCENIC FJORDS & NATIONAL PARKS

Today you have a short drive ahead of you and a full day to explore. Drive along the Fjærlands road towards the Jostedal glacier, which is mainland Europe’s largest icecap. We recommend stopping at the Norwegian glacier museum to learn more about the geology of the region. Before you reach the quaint village of Loen , you will drive along the magnificent Nordfjord and enjoy the dazzling turquoise lakes, cascading waterfalls, vast glaciers and steep mountains.

Board the 65-minute ferry from Hellesylt to Geiranger, where you learn about the wondrous waterfalls, and deep history and diverse geology of the Geirangerfjord. You will have spectacular scenic views during the ferry ride, as the ferry captain navigates the deep fjord.

With its fairytale landscape, Geiranger has a lot to offer nature lovers like snow-covered mountain tops, delicate waterfalls like the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil, lush green vegetation and the deep blue fjord. For panoramic views of the fjord, we recommend driving up to Flydalsjuvet .

Spend the night in Geiranger.

Driving distance: 61 km / 38 miles Estimated driving duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes (without stops)

Day 5: DRIVE THE EAGLE ROAD & TROLLSTIGEN

Get ready for some especially exciting drives today! From Geiranger, drive up the steep and winding Ørnevegen, known as “ the Eagle Road ”, to Eidsdal, where you will take a short ferry ride to Linge. If you enjoy twists and turns, you will be very impressed with the drive up  Trollstigen , “the Troll Ladder”, which is one of the most visited attractions in Norway.

After passing towering mountains along the drive, you will reach Ålesund , a captivating city that was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt after a great fire in 1904. Therefore, it looks very different from any other Norwegian town with its Art Nouveau architecture. The myriad of turrets, spires and beautiful ornamentation give the town its distinctive character, like something out of a fairytale. Here you also have the opportunity to visit the Atlantic Sea Park and enjoy stunning views from Fjellstuen .

Spend the night in Ålesund.

Driving distance: 191 km / 119 miles Estimated driving duration: 3 hours and 40 minutes (without stops)

Day 6: THE ATLANTIC OCEAN ROAD

After breakfast at your hotel in Ålesund, get behind the wheel and drive to Vestnes, soaking in the scenery along the way. You will then board a ferry for a short ride to Molde before driving to the small fishing village of Bud . This charming town has historical significance as it was the centre of trading in the 16th and 17th centuries between Bergen and Trondheim. From there you will drive on the Atlantic Ocean Road , with the vast sea on one side and majestic snow-clad mountains on the other. End the day in  Kristiansund , a cute city built on five islands with beautiful views from its natural harbour.

Spend the night in Kristiansund.

Driving distance. 179 km / 111 mi.  Estimated driving duration: 3 hours and 40 minutes (without stops)

Day 7: TRONDHEIM - THE CAPITAL OF THE VIKINGS

Continue north towards  Trondheim , the "Capital of the Vikings". The day is free for you to explore this vibrant port city that was once the capital of Norway during the Viking Age, back when the city was called Nidaros. Here you will find the remarkable  Nidaros Cathedral —with architecture to rival Paris’s Notre Dame, as well as countless other attractions like the Ringve Museum and Gardens, the Trøndelag Folk Museum, Munkholmen, the Old town bridge, and the charming neighbourhood of Bakklandet by the old wharf.

Spend the night in Trondheim.

Driving distance: 197 km / 123 mi.  Estimated driving duration: 3 hours and 30 minutes (without stops)

Day 8: Exploring The Coastline Of Norway

Today, you board a Hurigruten cruise ship to discover the martitime beauty of Norway. You will head to Trondheim‘s harbour to board the ship for the Norwegian Coastal Voyage, which will set sail along the Trondheim Fjord and past Hitra Island. The ship will weave along inlets exposing the raw beauty of wide fjord.

In the evening, the boat will dock at the city of Kristiansund and the town of Molde . This journey passes through some breathtaking coastal landscapes, and the final port of the day is a brief stop in Ålesund, after midnight.

Spend the night in a private cabin on the cruise ship.

Day 9: SAIL TO HISTORIC BERGEN

During the night, the ship calls at Torvik, Maløy, and Florø coming within view of its final destination— Bergen . Here you will disembark in the early afternoon to enjoy some leisure time and to drop off the rental car either this evening or tomorrow morning. In Bergen, can take time to explore attractions you didn‘t have time to visit at the beginning of your trip, or spend some time shopping or visiting a cafe or two.

Day 10: DEPARTURE FROM BERGEN

When it’s time for your Norwegian adventure to come to an end, drive to the airport and return your vehicle at the car rental office. • Speed and traffic violations have steep fines
  • There are over 900 tunnels in Norway, especially in the western fjords
  • Mountain passes can be narrow and winding

And finally, with all the beautiful scenery, you’ll want to take it slow and enjoy the drive!

For more information, we strongly recommend taking a few minutes to read through our guide to driving in Norway . You’ll also receive more guidance ahead of your arrival in the Norway Travel Guide.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will pick up your vehicle from the car rental office here. At the end of your rental period, you will return the car back to the airport.

We recommend using Google Maps or a search engine to find car parks near your accommodation. You can also ask your hotel for assistance. You might find you have a short walk between the car park and your hotel.

A GPS service is available for an additional fee. You can book this directly with the rental agent.

Alternatively, you may want to ensure you have adequate mobile roaming that you can use during your travels in Norway. This way you can use Google Maps or another navigation service on your phone.

It’s also good to note that Google Maps offers more up-to-date information as well as traffic navigation, compared to traditional GPS devices. You’re also able to pre-download maps of areas you will be visiting, so you can use them offline.

Please wait to book flights to Scandinavia until we can confirm your desired travel dates for this tour. This is due to varying availabilities on services included in this package.

After making a booking with Nordic Visitor, it might take a few weeks to confirm your travel arrangements. We recommend booking your flights once your personal travel consultant gets in touch to confirm your itinerary.

If you have any questions about your flights and itinerary, please contact us for more details.

Yes, you can customise this tour online. During the booking process, you can add extra nights to your itinerary as well as optional day trips, excursions and upgrades.

If you have something specific in mind, get in touch with your travel consultant and they’ll create your dream trip.

Yes, you can do so by booking an optional service during the booking steps or by contacting your travel consultant as soon as you can. If you plan on arriving and departing from Oslo, we can book you a direct train or domestic flight.

Another option is to add a Norway in a Nutshell® tour so you can travel in style between Bergen and Oslo. This is one of Norway’s most iconic journeys. You’ll travel by train, bus and ferry, seeing beautiful landscapes of steep mountains, cascading waterfalls, shimmering fjords, charming villages and scenic coastline.

You can also request to add extra nights in the capital to rest on either side of your trip.

On this itinerary, you will hop aboard a Hurtigruten cruise along the Norwegian west coast. The cruise includes cabin accommodation with private facilities as well as deck space for your rental car.

Your reservation is for an unspecified cabin with windows or port holes. Please note that views may be obstructed, but you can always go up to the deck for the best views around. Your daily breakfast is also included.

These coastal voyages are not like conventional cruises as there are 11 different ships in use. They all vary in size and facilities. That said, all Hurtigruten ships have restaurants, a cafeteria, laundry room, Wi-Fi and onboard activities.

When your ship is in port, you will be able to disembark if the stop is longer than 30 minutes.

Please bear in mind that we cannot guarantee your cabin number for coastal voyages shorter than 5 nights.

Optional shore excursions are available during your journey. You should pre-book the activities you are most interested in ahead of time.

On your Norway tour, you’ll stay in accommodation that’s been hand-picked by our travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

During the booking process, you can select whether you want Comfort Plus or Superior accommodation. Comfort Plus usually consists of standard rooms in good quality and comfortable 3-star hotels. Superior is standard rooms in 4-star hotels combined with Superior rooms in premium 3-star hotels.

You will also be able to choose between single, double or triple rooms. Please note that in Norway room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double bed often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra single bed, rollaway or sofa bed. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

If you have anything specific in mind, please contact us to discuss customising your accommodation options.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

If you have a passport from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa to visit Norway. This visa-free entry is valid for up to 90 days.

Visiting from another country? You can find out whether you require a visa to enter Norway on the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Select your home country to view details. If you do require a visa, you will be directed to your local embassy website to learn about the visa requirements.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 3 months from your departure from Norway. It’s good to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

Travelling with your kids? No problem! You'll be able to enter your children's ages during the booking process. This lets us know whether to arrange either a baby cot or roll-away bed for your trip.

If you'd like us to arrange for a car seat to be provided for your trip, please let us know ahead of time. It's also possible to book this directly with the car rental agency. This will incur a small, extra cost.

Only you can pick the best time to visit Norway for your trip. It’ll depend on how much time you have to explore and what you want to see and do in Norway.

During the summer months, June to August , you’ll have the warmest temperatures and longest daylight hours of the year. This is ideal for outdoor excursions and taking full advantage of your days for sightseeing.

If you’d like to experience the top attractions with fewer visitors around then you could book your summer trip in May or September . These shoulder season months generally have more tour and attraction availability.

Our self-drive tours are only available from May until September when driving conditions are ideal. That means that if you want to travel at other times of the year, you can pick from train and cruise tours or partially guided adventures .

The winter months are also popular, but generally quieter. Travel to Norway at this time of year to see snowy mountains, sail along frosty fjords and try to spot the magnificent northern lights. If you head north in December and January , you could experience the polar night.

At this time of year, the conditions are also ideal for winter activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and more.

Read more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

From Oslo in the south, Norway stretches hundreds of kilometres into the Arctic Circle. The country is so long that it spans the latitudes of 58°N to 81°N. For that reason, daylight hours vary greatly depending on where you’ll be visiting. That said, summer in Norway brings long days with plenty of daylight.

In the south, around Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger, you’ll experience 15–20 hours of daylight. If you visit the north, including locations such as Tromsø and Kirkenes, you can expect 20–24 hours of daylight.

In fact, within the Arctic Circle, from mid-May to late July, you’ll experience the midnight sun. This is when the sun never fully sets.

Norway’s long summer days give you plenty of time to explore. That said, you may want to pack a sleeping mask if you are a light sleeper or tend to wake up at dawn.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to time and daylight in Norway .

During the summer months, you can expect fairly stable weather in Norway. That said, because the country spans such a large distance from north to south, temperatures are likely to vary depending on your location.

For example, the west coast is usually warmer thanks to the Gulf Stream, while the far north is usually cooler.

The months of June, July and August boast the warmest weather of the year. In Oslo, you can expect average temperatures around 16°C (61°F), with potential highs of 20–25°C (68–77°F). In Bergen, it is closer to 13°C (55°F) and in the north, around Tromsø, you can expect temperatures around 10°C (41-50°F)

It’s also good to know that weather conditions are often changeable in Northern Europe, so you should come ready for sun, rain and wind. For more information on the local climate, read the page Norway weather conditions .

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

Summertime is the most stable time of year in Norway. That said, you should still be ready to experience all seasons in one day. Especially if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors, you’ll want to pack for a combination of weather conditions.

Bring lighter clothes for the warmer, sunny days, and extra layers for chilly nights in the mountains or for taking in the view from cruise ship decks.

Here is an essential summer packing list for your trip to Norway:

  • Shorts and trousers
  • Short and long sleeve tops
  • At least one warm jumper or fleece
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Light gloves, hat and scarf
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
  • Sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen
  • Eye mask to sleep despite the long daylight hours
  • Electronic gear such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • A backpack for easy access to daily essentials
  • and don’t forget your camera!

An umbrella can also come in handy. If you are a wildlife watcher, you may wish to bring binoculars.

For more information, check out this Norway packing list .

In most major Norwegian cities and towns you will be able to find coin-operated launderettes, with self-service facilities, and dry cleaners. Most hotels on your trip will also offer a laundry or dry cleaning service for an additional cost.

When you travel with Nordic Visitor, breakfast at your Norway accommodation is always included.  For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 100–400 NOK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 500–1,000 NOK. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 1,500 NOK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

We aim to complete bookings within a few weeks. During this time we take care of booking your accommodation, activities, and transport, confirming all parts of your journey. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip.

When we get back to you might depend slightly on how far ahead you’ve booked your travels and other tours running at the time.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

If you have any questions before your trip, you can get in touch with our Norway travel experts. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Norway Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which currency is used in Norway and which credit cards are widely accepted
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • Which languages do Norwegian speak (yes, English is one of them!)
  • How to get a refund on tax-free shopping
  • As well as tipping, buying snacks, and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, we will begin the booking process for your trip. We aim to complete the preparation within a few weeks. This includes reserving your accommodation and confirming all your services in Norway.

Once your trip details are finalised, we will prepare your personal itinerary and booking overview, and send all of this to you via email. When you arrive in Norway, you’ll receive a welcome bag with hard copies of your itinerary, attraction and tour vouchers, the Nordic Visitor Norway Travel Guide and more.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect upon landing in Norway?

After picking up your luggage, you’ll collect your rental vehicle or head directly to your accommodation. Your personalised itinerary will be clear on your car rental details, pick up and drop off.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts between 2–4 PM.

You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel if you have to wait. Please contact your travel consultant well in advance of your arrival if you’d like an early check-in.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will usually need to check out from your room around 10–11 AM. If you’re staying in town longer, you will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before making your way to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Euro (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

Extremely well planned tour

The organisation of the tour was extremely well planned and was easily followed using the itinerary suggested for each day. We knew what we were doing before we left which helped a lot.

Gary, Malta

Scenic norway - classic, august 2023, incredibly well-organised.

The whole package was incredibly well-organised. The itinerary, travel information, hotels and activities were great. Juliana was fantastic and responded to emails and phone calls very promptly.

Catherine, United Kingdom

Scenic norway - classic, june 2023, we enjoyed it.

This was our second tour with Nordic Visitor and while we enjoyed it, it seemed smoother in Iceland.

Dana, United States

Everything was wonderful.

We did the 10-day tour from Bergen to Trondheim and back to Bergen. We then added the train to Oslo and a few nights. Everything was wonderful. We had a package waiting for us in the rental car with a map and bound itinerary. Everyone we met was very kind and helpful. We weren't expecting so many tunnels, but got used to them quickly. I only wish we had more time in each place.

Sarah, United States

Well organised.

Everything was well explained and organised. My questions or concerns were immediately adressed, thus, no problem with your company. However, western Norway is dominated by the cruise industry that severely impacts solo travellers and definitely impacts overall enjoyment not to mention the pristine environment.

Anthony, United States

Well-placed hotels.

The trip route they provided gave many opportunities to view spectacular scenery. The driving was easy and the hotels well-placed.

Kurt, United States

Accommodation.

Sleep soundly, in the accommodation type of your choice, and wake up ready to enjoy another day of exploration.

Comfort Plus

Standard rooms in good quality and comfortable three-star hotels in combination with charming country hotels.

Standard rooms in four-star hotels in combination with Superior rooms in premium three-star hotels.

Day 1: Welcome to Reykjavík

On arrival to Keflavik International Airport, you will be greeted by a professional driver who will take you to your accommodation in Reykjavík . After settling in, the rest of the day is free for you to explore Reykjavik. You can stroll the charming capital city, visit museums, and explore landmarks. Spend the next five nights in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Reykjavík City Walk & Blue Lagoon

After breakfast, enjoy an exclusive walking tour in the heart of Reykjavík. You’ll join a small group and a friendly local guide. The tour starts at Ingólfur Square (“Ingólfstorg”) in the city centre.

Over the course of the 2-hour walk, your guide will introduce you to the bustling downtown area. They will also point out great restaurants, charming cafés and museums in the area.

The highlights you’ll see on this tour include the Harpa concert hall, the old harbour area, the parliament building, the Reykjavík pond and more! This is a great way to see the best of the Icelandic capital and get some insider knowledge on hidden gems in the city.

Later in the afternoon, you will be picked up for a bus transfer to the famous Blue Lagoon spa. Here, you can spend your time bathing in the heated geothermal outdoor pool, which is rich in silica and soothing for your skin. There is also a mask bar, a sauna and steam room to take advantage of. Or enjoy a spa treatment (must be booked in advance).

After relaxing in the warm waters, you can choose to dine at the luxurious Lava Restaurant on-site, before taking the bus back to Reykjavík.

Spend the night in Reykjavík.

Day 3: Exploring the Golden Circle

Today you visit some of Iceland’s most famous attractions with a small guided group tour of the classic “Golden Circle” route in South Iceland. You will start the day heading to Hveragerði where the bus will make a short stop before continuing on your journey.

One of the many highlights you’ll see today is the impressive Kerið Crater. Other attractions include the magical two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall and the spouting hot springs of Geysir . While Geysir lies dormant, its neighbour Strokkur erupts every few minutes, gushing steam and water high into the air.

The last stop of the day is Þingvellir National Park , a place of great historical and geological significance. It is also one of Iceland’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Þingvellir is the site of the country’s first parliament and is located along the edge of the great rift between the Eurasian and American tectonic plates.

Day 4: The South Coast - Glaciers and Black Sand Beaches

Enjoy a guided group tour along the striking south coast of Iceland on another day of adventures. Start your journey with a stop at the picture-perfect, 60-metre-high (197-foot-high) Skógafoss waterfall. Next you’ll stop at  Reynisfjara , a hauntingly beautiful black sand beach. You will then continue towards the town of Vík where you’ll make a photo stop at the local church, which offers expansive views of the landscape.

Then it is time to head back along the south coast. You will stop at Sólheimajökull glacier where you will learn everything about glaciers and the area. The last highlight of the day is the picturesque Seljalandsfoss  waterfall, which is 40 metres (131 feet) high. Its main attraction, besides the scenery, is the pathway leading behind the waterfall, giving you a chance to admire the falls from all angles. Later, you’ll return to Reykjavík.

Day 5: Your Icelandic Adventure

Today is up to you! You could choose to join an exciting optional activity like snorkeling in the Silfra fissure at Þingvellir National Park, or riding a stocky and adorable Icelandic horse, or even venturing inside a volcano. Other options include enjoying a whale watching tour, riding an ATV on rugged tracks, sightseeing high above in a helicopter and exploring an ice tunnel by going Into the Glacier.

If you are up for a more leisurely day, you could choose to relax in Reykjavik. Options include visiting a local swimming pool, checking out museums, or strolling the charming streets to see where the day takes you. Keep in mind that your travel consultant can fulfill customised requests like renting a car or booking activities that you enjoy.

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

Your scheduled journey to the Blue Lagoon is by bus, with up to 70 travellers. When you arrive in Iceland, you’ll receive vouchers with all your transfer details.

Children must be at least 2 years old to visit the Blue Lagoon. And it’s mandatory for children aged 2 to 8 to wear inflatable armbands while in the lagoon. These are provided free of charge.

Please note that only 2 children under the age of 10 can be admitted into the lagoon per guardian.

Even in summertime Iceland’s climate can feel cool. As you’ll probably spend a lot of time outdoors, you should be ready for a variety of weather conditions.

Here is a recommended summer packing list for your trip to Iceland:

  • Durable insulated jacket
  • Rain gear, including sturdy wind and waterproof layers, like a jacket and trousers
  • Robust walking shoes with a good grip
  • Mid-layers such as a fleece or woollen jumper
  • A few pairs of warm hiking socks
  • Hat, gloves and scarf
  • Swimwear for visiting geothermal pools or spas
  • Backpack for daily adventures
  • Electronic equipment such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and eye mask for the summer sun
  • And don’t forget your camera!

For more information, check out this Iceland packing guide .

Breakfast at your Iceland accommodations is always included when you travel with Nordic Visitor.  For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 2,000–3,000 ISK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 3,000–6,000 ISK. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 7,000 ISK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

Nordic Visitor offers 10–20% deposits so you can reserve your trip as early as it’s convenient for you. The remaining balance is due 30 days before you travel.

Many tours are also open for the following year if you like to plan well ahead. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us .

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

At that time, they’ll confirm the availability of your tour. Then the booking process starts, which may take a few weeks. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip. You will also receive more information about what to expect during your trip.

You can get in touch with our Iceland travel experts ahead of your trip if you have any questions. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Iceland Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • Which languages do Icelanders speak (yes, English is one of them!)
  • How to get a refund on tax-free shopping
  • As well as tipping, buying souvenirs, and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything. Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll email you copies of your travel documents.

When you arrive in Iceland, you’ll receive a welcome bag with hard copies of your itinerary, attraction and tour vouchers, the Nordic Visitor Iceland Travel Guide and more.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect upon landing in Keflavík?

After picking up your luggage, you will be greeted by a driver holding a sign with your name in the arrivals hall. The driver will hand over your welcome package with hard copies of your travel documents. You’ll then be driven to your hotel in Reykjavík.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts between 2 PM and 4 PM.

You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel so you can start exploring before check-in.

You will need to check out from your room, but will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before catching your transfer to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Icelandic Króna (ISK), the official currency of Iceland.

Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate as issued by the Central Bank of Iceland. This means conversions from ISK to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

These should tide you over until you’re in Iceland to take your own pictures.

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

The three of us had a fabulous experience. The trip was phenomenal.. Your arrangements were flawless. Each pick up was on time and the people were friendly and helpful. We learned a great deal about Iceland and its people and traditions. Each guide, driver and support staff offered a unique perspective that added to our knowledge. The choices you made for companies and the personnel they provided were excellent and met and even surpassed our expectations. The hotel was in the perfect spot and allowed us to walk to many restaurants and shopping areas. The staff there was friendly and helpful and the breakfast fine.

Best of south iceland, september 2023, very helpful travel consultant.

The whole process was very easy and our travel consultant was very helpful. We got to do and see everything we wanted to in Iceland! The added walking tour was much appreciated to get a better understanding of the country and its origins.

Fantastic from start to finish.

We did a 5-day tour which included the south coast tour, the Golden Circle tour, northern lights tour, Flyover experience, Blue Lagoon and Reykjavík city walk. This was a trip I have wanted to do for a while and it didn't disappoint. Nordic Visitor gave me advice on the best month to visit and they were spot on. The weather was good, we were lucky enough to see the northern lights and the tours were not too busy. The tour guides were excellent, full of information and they all seem to love their jobs. This trip was fantastic from start to finish. Thank you Nordic Visitor.

Joanne, United Kingdom

Working with Elena was fabulous. She was very responsive and assisted with us changing our minds a couple of times. I couldn't recommend her more! Overall your options were great.
