About the hotel

What's nearby

This Canadian Destination Is Bucket List Worthy For The Chance To See A Rare Bear

spirit bear standing in river

Stretching over 250 milesalong the rugged British Columbia coastline, the Great Bear Rainforest stands as one of the last large temperate rainforests on the planet and is sometimes even called the "Amazon of the North." The area encompasses 1,000-year-old cedar forests along with stunning waterfalls and fjords and is home to an astonishing array of wildlife, including wolves, black and grizzly bears, deer, cougars, mountain goats, orca, salmon, sea lions, sea otters, and humpback whales.

But it's the elusive inhabitant known as the Kermode or spirit bear that truly steals the spotlight. The spirit bear is a sub-species of black bear that carries recessive genes for light coloring. Their bright creamy fur sets them apart from the dark landscapes of the forest, making them almost appear to glow. Given their mystical appearance, it's no wonder that some of the region's First Nation people consider the bears to be sacred beings. While their appearance may be somewhat ethereal, their size and speed are anything but: an adult spirit bear can weigh up to 350 pounds and run through the forest at speeds approaching 35 mph.

Spotting a spirit bear is the opportunity of a lifetime, as the creatures are found only in this part of the world and very few in number. Their exact population size is difficult to determine, but it's believed to be less than a few hundred bears, total. This makes the spirit bear one of the rarest creatures in the entire world.

Wildlife tours in the Great Bear Rainforest

Not all visitors who attempt to see a spirit bear in the Great Bear Rainforest will be successful, but the search can be an incredible adventure in itself. Tours with local indigenous guides are the best way to seek out the bears, and these experiences are also great ways to  learn about the indigenous cultures of British Columbia . For example, Spirit Bear Lodge  in Klemtu offers a variety of multi-day packages that include boat rides to and from the oceanfront lodge, rooms with ocean views, home-cooked meals, and opportunities to mingle with and learn from members of the Kitasoo Xai'xais First Nation, who own and manage the entire operation. Knowledgeable indigenous guides also run the wilderness tours, so you'll be in good hands if you happen to run into a bear while hiking .

Tours involve boat rides through the estuaries, where spirit and other bears can often be spotted feeding. At certain points during the journey, guests can disembark on the rocky shoreline to explore the coastal landscape on foot. The boat and hiking excursions provide opportunities to see many other forms of wildlife besides spirit bears, and Spirit Bear Lodge guides are mindful of employing ethical viewing practices at all times to ensure minimal disturbance to the animals.

Touring the coast in a kayak

Remote expedition kayak tours are another great way to explore the Great Bear Rainforest, for those who want to see bears and other wildlife in the most adventurous way possible. Spirit of the West Adventures offers multi-day kayak tours of the area starting in the town of Bella Bella, a 2.5-hour flight from Vancouver. Kayakers travel through the Hakai Passage and the Kildidt Sound in what the company refers to on its  website as "one of the most stunning seascapes around," so glorious it's been the subject of numerous documentaries and publications. Nights are spent camping on beaches or in forest clearings, deep in the heart of the coastal wilderness.

While the Great Bear Rainforest can be visited year-round, the best time to catch a glimpse of the elusive Kermode bear is during the salmon spawning season from late August to mid-October, when these iconic creatures gather along rivers and streams to feast on the annual salmon run. For those who want to continue exploring British Columbia, Vancouver Island is a short ferry or plane ride away from Vancouver. Renowned for its pristine landscapes, it's  another spectacular place for wildlife-watching adventures , with opportunities to see black bears, humpback whales, orcas, seals, and more.

Trip Leader: John E. Marriott

White kermode spirit bear in the Great Bear Rainforest, BC, Canada

Following hot on the heels of very successful Spirit Bear Photography tours from 2011-2019 and again in 2022-23, I’m pleased to once again be offering a once-in-a-lifetime week-long tour into the Great Bear Rainforest on the British Columbia coast in search of spirit bears (white kermode bears – a black bear with a double recessive gene that is only found in a small area on the B.C. Coast), black bears, humpback whales, bald eagles, coastal wolves and salmon in 2023. Join Canon me aboard the AfterGlow along one of the world’s most spectacular coastlines for a tour that includes some unbelievable opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography in some of the best bear, whale and wolf viewing locations in the world!

The tour will explore the inlets, bays, estuaries, and old-growth forests of the mystical midcoast of British Columbia, including Gribbell and Princess Royal Islands, the ancestral home of the rare white Kermode Bear. The surrounding mountains and rainforest are home to grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, black bears, spirit bears, deer, and beavers and we will walk trails and explore creeks to watch spawning salmon and to search for and hopefully photograph spirit bears, black bears, and potentially grizzlies or even wolves. Guests can also expect to have excellent opportunities photographing humpback whales during the trip.

Due to extreme weather conditions (it  is  called the  rain -forest for a reason) and rough terrain, and to increase our chances of seeing a spirit bear, we will utilize native-built and licensed viewing platforms and areas in certain situations. So while spirit bear sightings are never a guarantee , we have set up this tour to try to maximize our chances of encountering a white kermode bear. We have also limited our group size to six participants (plus me) with the intent of increasing your overall enjoyment of the trip, and we are staying the entire week in the main region where spirit bears are most commonly seen.

The AfterGlow was chosen for this trip because the boat and crew have the reputation of being the best at what they do when it comes to operating wildlife photography trips on the B.C. Coast. You can expect professional service, superb guiding, good food, and clean, comfortable quarters. We will use the boat as a base, and a motorized inflatable to transfer people between the boat and the shore, as we explore one of the last unlogged temperate rainforests in the world.

Expect this to be a unique and exciting photo tour that will challenge every skill you have as a wildlife photographer. You will likely shoot hand-held and from a tripod in a wide variety of situations and weather conditions.

This itinerary is a sample only – the exact itinerary of this trip will be dictated by factors such as weather, tides, and photo opportunities, with the crew working within the parameters of safety, time, and the highlights of the area.

Participants will be expected to arrive in Terrace, BC (serviced by air from Vancouver, BC) on Day 1 prepared for an early morning departure on Day 2 from Terrace for a transport via van to the port community of Kitimat where you will meet up with the AfterGlow. The boat will then immediately head out towards the best bear and whale viewing areas.

The rest of the trip will be spent exploring the Great Bear Rainforest and enjoying the splendor of the surrounding area. Opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography will occur on each day; however, please be aware that the weather conditions and the location of wildlife will dictate the frequency of such activities.

Note that unlike many other spirit bear photography tours, we will be spending the majority of our time in prime spirit bear country where there are fewer grizzly bears, increasing the likelihood of spirit bear sightings. This trip also offers two ‘creek’ days — where you hike up creeks looking for wildlife.

On our final day, we will return to Prince Rupert via water taxi for the conclusion of the trip.

Further Details

This trip requires a good level of fitness and will involve hiking with gear on uneven and wet terrain on unmarked trails and through the bush. Participants should be mobile enough to climb ladders and get in and out of a zodiac and to carry their gear over rough rainforest trails for up to four kilometers at a time. Weather conditions may be variable and participants must be prepared for adverse weather including torrential rain and cold temperatures. Although conditions may be difficult at times, the rewards are worth it, as you become part of just a small percentage of people who have explored the wonders of the Great Bear Rainforest! Maximum six participants.

The Spirit Bear Photography Price includes all days in the First Nations licensed viewing areas, as well as accommodation and dinner in Terrace on Day 1 and breakfast on Day 2.

All Canadian Wildlife Photography Tours are non-smoking tours. Participants will be required to sign a Waiver and a Terms and Conditions Cancellation Policy.

Please note that a $1250 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve your spot on a Spirit Bear Photography Tour. The balance owing, including gst, is due 90 days prior to your trip departure and is also non-refundable; however, upon cancellation, this balance owing may be transferred to another workshop or tour if John is able to fill your spot.

We highly recommend all workshop and tour participants purchase independent trip cancellation insurance to protect against unforeseen circumstances.

Day 4 - Guided Nature Walk & Afternoon drive

Wake up early and wander down to the Wildlife Viewing Station, which is for the exclusive use of Tweedsmuir Park Lodge guests. Early morning is a great time to spot bears and the raised structure provides open lines of sight both up and down the river. After checking out the station you have a choice of a hot or continental breakfast, which is held every day at 8am. Afterwards, it’s time to head out for a Guided Nature Walk in the old growth forests of Tweedsmuir Park, the largest provincial park in British Columbia. Your guide, a naturalist, will show you how to track the bears and will point out various bear signs, including rub trees with claw and bite marks, and places the bears dig out in the forest floor for their naps called day beds. A picnic lunch will be served in the field. In the afternoon, continue exploring the park with a drive on the Tote Road past old, abandoned homesteads brimming with character. This is prime bear habitat and sightings are common. At the end of the road there is a short, highly recommended hike to Stillwater Lake. This is a beautiful, pristine place that should not be missed! You will arrive back at the lodge in the late afternoon. Now you can relax and enjoy some hors d’oeuvres on the sun deck of the lodge, exchanging stories of wildlife seen with your fellow guests. Make sure to head back to the Wildlife Viewing Station before dinner.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner Accommodation:   Tweedsmuir Park Lodge Activities: Guided Nature Walk and afternoon park drive.

Day 5 - River Drift on the Atnarko in the morning, Guided Nature Walk in the afternoon

A nutritious lunch will be served at the lodge before you head off with your guide to further explore Tweedsmuir Park. Our knowledgeable and friendly guides know the area well and have mapped numerous short hikes to superb vantage points overlooking the Atnarko River to see spawning salmon...and the bears and eagles fishing for them!

Vancouver Island Craft Spirits

This guide to craft spririts has been curated to invite locals and visitors into the creatively crafty distilleries where some of the best spirits are made. This itinerary is designed to take you on a journey – imbibe, learn, and celebrate another piece of what makes BC, and Vancouver Island such a spectacular place to explore and experience. The beauty of being located on an Island in the Pacific Northwest means that this adventure will always take you close to the salty ocean air and ever-changing shorelines.

North to South and East to West, Vancouver Island is brimming with distilleries whose products, processes and philosophies are as diverse as the individuals and companies who own and manage them. The distilleries on the route have created spaces for visitors and residents to imbibe, learn, and celebrate Island spirits. Fermented and distilled BC honey? Yup, we have Canada’s first. The World’s Greatest Gin? Check. Sunsets and sea air as unofficial ingredients in single malt whiskey? On Vancouver Island. Van Gogh and Hemingway’s favourite spirit Absinthe? You can find it here.

Invite your friends, gather up your family, and explore Vancouver Island’s guide to craft spirits!

Distilleries produce alcohol that is between 20% and 75.5% ABV (alcohol by volume), so wherever your spirit path takes you, plan ahead with a designated driver and be responsible about how spirited you get on your journey!

Comox Valley Distilleries

Shelter Point, Wayward Distillery, and Island Spirits are all located in close proximity (or within) the Comox Valley, which is well-known for its abundant agriculture, wide-open views, and the Island’s only commercial ski resort.

Shelter Point

The first stop on the Path: the 300 acre former UBC farm bordered by the Salish Sea to the east and the oyster river to the south, now home to Shelter Point. It’s difficult not to be blown away by how expansive and gorgeous this place is. And Shelter Point Whiskey is good. Really good.

Wayward Distillery

Travelling ‘down island’ (as the locals say) brings you to Wayward Distillery in Courtenay. 100% BC honey is fermented and distilled into decadently sippable and unruly spirits. As the first distillery in Canada to use honey as the ferment in all of their spirits, Wayward hosts two demonstration hives on-site to help visitors make the connection between pollinating honey bees and conscientious alcohol consumption.

Island Spirits

Must stop spots, wayward distillation house, central island distilleries, bespoke spirits house.

Starting the list of Central Island Distilleries is Bespoke Spirits House. Launched in 2020, the craft distillery makes gin and vodka spirits that can be picked up from their store or enjoyed in their tasting room.

Misguided Spirits Distillery

Another new addition to the Spirit Path is Misguided Spirits Distillery. Stop by to try their Brother XII vodka – which was recently awarded a silver medal in this year’s national Artisanal Spirits competition. Their Spectral Gin has become popular among their customers, and they have newly launched a Rhubarb Ginger Gin Liqueur that is considered best in its class.

Arbutus Distillery

While Arbutus Distillery crafts much more than absinthe in its stills, it is well worth a stop on The Spirit Path to learn and taste this tasty and often mysterious spirit.

Ampersand Distilling

In Canada’s most temperate growing valley, Ampersand is a family-owned distillery on a five-acre farm. Evidenced in the artistic & Scientific approach to crafting spirits, This family is dedicated to leading visitors through their stories and their creations.

Stillhead Distillery

Also in Duncan, The Spirit Path brings you to Stillhead Distillery – infused spirits and creative expressions of local produce are how Stillhead’s distillers will bring you in.

Merridale Craft Spirits

While Merridale is well known for its scrumptious ciders, some of BC’s oldest craft spirits were made and are housed at Merridale, as it was the first craft distillery in the province.

Misguided Spirits

Merridale craft sprits, pacific rim distilleries.

This section of The Spirit Path brings wanderers to the West Coast of Vancouver Island. As the Foodie culture explodes in Tofino and Ucluelet, Tofino Distillery and Pacific Rim Distilling are each drawing inspiration from the world-class chefs who are foraging and feasting on the bounty of the local waters. Let The Spirit Path take you to both of these communities and take the time to explore the wide-open beaches and famed Wild Pacific Trail.

Pacific Rim Distilling

Tofino distillery, victoria craft distilleries.

The City of Victoria is overflowing with places to eat and drink, so The Spirit Path will take you to the distillers who are working hard (and smart) to keep alcoholic spirits relevant in the restaurant and home entertainment scene.

Fermentorium Distilling Co

Fermentorium is an extension of the Phillips Brewing creators so you know they are dialled into what makes a delicious drink.

Moon Brewery & Distillery

As Moon Brewery & Distillery also offers both beer and spirits, they are aligned with bringing their guests a variety of tastes to satisfy any palette.

Victoria Caledonian Brewery & Distillery

If you’re on The Spirit Path for whisky, Victoria Caledonian wants you to experience their single malt three-year-old whisky. Some things have to be tasted to be believed.

Sheringham Distillery

Located about 30 minutes from Victoria in the beautiful community of Sooke is Sheringham Distillery, featuring an award-winning selection of vodkas, gins, and occasionally whisky. Their Seaside Gin won multiple awards, including the World’s Best Contemporary Gin in 2019 from the World Gin Awards.

Canada’s oldest brewpub is now offering handcrafted spirits alongside their traditional ales and ciders!

Victoria Caledonian Brewery and Distillery

Moon under water brewery pub & distillery, saanich & gulf islands distilleries, devine sprits.

The rural/urban boundaries blend on the southeast coast of the Vancouver Island Spirit Path, so take advantage of venturing out the Saanichton Peninsula to try DeVine Spirits, who grow their own fruit, barley, and botanicals for their wines and spirits. These distillers make it and they live it.

Victoria Distillers

Victoria Distillers in Sidney is both an onsite distillery and a community gathering space, so sampling their spirits is as much about taste as it is revelling in its waterfront location.

Salt Spring Shine Distillery

Across the water on Salt Spring Island, lifestyle drives Salt Spring Shine Distillery to embed sustainability into every piece of their operation. Made with 100% BC honey, Salt Spring Shine’s spirits are a welcome stop on the Spirit Path.

*To achieve the Craft designation from the Provincial Government a BC distillery must produce no more than 50,000 litres of spirit per year, the distillery must use 100% BC agricultural products to produce the alcohol from fermentation and fermentation must be completed onsite at the Distillery.
