About sleep.

Sleep is an American heavy metal power trio from San Jose, California. Sleep earned critical and record label attention early in its career. Critic Eduardo Rivadavia describes them as "perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band" and notes they exerted a strong influence on heavy metal in the 1990s. However, conflict with its record company contributed to Sleep's breakup by the end of the decade. The band reformed in 2009, and has played sporadic live dates internationally since. As of May 2017 there was a message posted from the band stating that they almost finished recording material for a new album.

  • Sleep's Holy Mountain (1992)

Live reviews

22 months since these two decimated my ears at this venue, they did it again.

Noticeable differences: 11 months of sobriety made this sound better and become, obviously literally, more memorable. Sleep continues tweaking, the tightness of the three sonic titans increasingly adding play space and joy and aural freshness to these old jams. Jason has really found the thud; a groove pounded so in lock with how these tunes can be in the live context. I got into Sleep around 1999, after the split, so my first live experience was 2011. The terrible sound in Terminal 5 and Jason's newness muddied and sullied the first trip. Then Union Transfer three years later corrected everything. It was cathartic and religious. But I was messed up and did not fully experience the experience. Thus, this was the best time I have seen them. The fuzz and unending sustain and groove and cymbal hits are etched in my headspace. Windhand as well, only my 2nd time hearing them live. They also have grown and changed and progressed. I was expecting what I vaguely recalled from last time, and I assumed wrong.

Windhand lost a guitarist, leaving one to carry the doom torch. This cleared out the sound, so less muddied, and hearing him solo while only the bass player and drummer filled the spaces was much more pleasing. I love two guitar bands depending on how they are utilized; that thin lizzy soaring thing...as Pallbearer. For Windhand, the two just covered everything in this fuzzed blend and the doom was unclear. Last night, the bass was up front, he has an awesome tone and I'm elated to have heard it. Dorthia also; she brought it. Two years ago her vocals were buried under the din, and I found her voice too whispered and soft. That has changed. She soared and soothed, these long notes piercing through the heavy. During guitar solos, I heard some early Electric Wizard-type things, as well, no volume drop, the bassist filling every inch of space, like High On Fire live. It was a great set and I'd love to see them again. Nabbed Grief's Infernal Flower, the Cough split, both on CD, and a sticker for the new car. Thank you Windhand!

SLEEP. Dragonaut, Holy Mountain, 1st 1/3rd Dopesmoker, The Clarity, Sonic Titan, Aquarian, From Beyond. There's so much respect and fun and appreciation emanating from the stage when these three form together. Everyone's usually busy with their own shit; Matt's dominating the metal realm with High On Fire; Al is just making people meditate without even knowing it in OM; Jason's been drumming the tribal love for Neurosis for ages. Neurosis have a new record this September, supposedly OM is finally following up Advaitic Songs. SLEEP becomes this time of relief, decompression and respite for all three somehow. It's this little side-baby that started all of this. And when that baby wakes up, holy fuck does it get loud. Matt was...sort of? wearing a shirt. It was...like the top half of a kimono? No buttons...no chance of NOT seeing gut. Like 1975 Jimmy Page? And like 1975 Jimmy Page, damn does that Les Paul sound righteous. I love the moments when Matt goes berserk on solos, because that's when Al shines. Like Geezer back in the day, Al fills those spaces breathtakingly. He plays around on his gorgeous bass, dropping what sound to me like new notes everytime I hear them, but maybe they've been they're all along and only live can one hear them. Don't know, don't care. The tour patch, larger, was 15 a pop this time, so I just put some cash in the tip jar to call it a night. Endless thanks to SLEEP, the staff for keeping us safe, and that guy in that Sabbath shirt. I want that shirt, man.

If this is the schedule, then April, 2018 Sleep/Windhand will sell out 3 nights in a row at Union Transfer. Please, let that be the schedule. I am ready for launch date.

As you might guess Sleep’s musical performance is a high voltage, in your face type doom metal show that will have you trapped in the heavy sludge of their tasty guitar licks. When performing live they have stacks of large guitar amps piled high on the stage and turn them up to the highest volume. Matt Pike tunes his guitar to very low frequencies allowing him to get the deepest, heaviest tones out of his guitar. Pike often plays angular, atonal riffs on his guitar that gains much comparison to Tony Iommi’s guitar style from Black Sabbath. Al Cisneros adds the most depth to the performance with the loud, resonating sounds of his bass guitar. The band plays long drawn out songs that seem to drone on forever with their incredibly dense and heavy tones. Pike often creates very catchy riffs that are bound to get stuck in your head through his motifs in the songs.

Sleep’s stage theatrics are not highly elaborate, but they do correspond appropriately to their performance. Smoke fills the stage, and dim, blue lights wash over the background while bright, white lights penetrate through the dark landscape of the stage. Matt Pike is always seen shirtless at one of Sleep’s performance with his elaborate tattoos exposed over his body. Sleep’s setlist stretches over most of their discography and includes most of the songs fans want to hear like “Nain’s Baptism”. Sleep has definitely garnered the reputation of being a legendary band within their own genre and have been called the ultimate stoner rock band of all time. Seeing Sleep blast out the complete sludgy sound of metal they are so renowned for playing makes for the ultimate experience.

This is the kind of band that you have to experience live to fully appreciate. And the live show delivers!

Measured, slow, and churning, the guitar and bass were amazing, the vocals clear, the drums.. a thunder.

I was a casual fan of the band until the live show. Now I'm buying everything I can get my hands on. It was that good.

Also of note, if you see they are coming to your town, buy the tix as soon as you hear about it. I was going to see them around Christmas and while deciding, the show sold out. This one sold out in days.

Very friendly, die hard fan base. A rare and great thing!

Proceed Weedian!

Awesome awesome show, was insanely loud and drony, and when they opened the show with a dopesmoker it was like a wish come true. The band just came in played for about 2 hours with about 2-3 mins of talking and then they left, no encore no nothing they knew they played awesome music and that was enough for the crowd.

Sleep was a magical religious experience. The earth vibrated and our souls were flooded with goodness. Also some chick was tripping balls and yelling, which I found impressive that her voice didn't fail, and absolutely hilarious too. Sleep is the best. Phenomenal

Tartie’s profile image

Just transcendental. Amazing tonality and static lights that make the stage looks a thousand feet tall. Truly a religious experience. These guys only get better as they get older, and the crowd in Chicago certainly proved that. Sleep forever

nicholas.m.bernstein’s profile image

They killed it. Better than they're recordings. They still got it.

And the venue was chill, easy to move around, good view, and sound.

All in all a very good set, and Bell Witch was really good too

eric-phelan’s profile image

It was very good, as expected! They played all the old songs that we loved! Thanks god they changed venue and more people could attend. The encore was with Dopesmoker.

Matt Pike teases Sleep comeback: “We’re talking and working on stuff again.”

Sleep guitarist Matt Pike has hinted that the band’s two-year-long hiatus will be ending rather soon

Matt Pike onstage with High On Fire in 2022

Sleep guitarist Matt Pike has teased that the pioneering stoner metal band will soon be reactivated again.

The musician, who also fronts stoner/ thrash trio High On Fire, spoke about the state of Sleep in a new interview with Steelworks , and revealed that the band has quietly been at work on something .

Sleep haven’t released an album since 2018’s surprise-released comeback, The Sciences , nor played a show together since 2022.

“Well, we haven’t played live in a while and we took a little hiatus,” said Pike (as transcribed by Metal Injection ).

“Right now we’re just playing [ Dungeons & Dragons ] online really, and there’s some surprises coming up, but I can’t elaborate or share on how that’s going to turn out.”

Pike added: “We’re talking and working on stuff again, but it’s not come to fruition. It’s nothing that I can announce. You know us, we’ll drop a record in the middle of the night and no one will know it’s coming. So it’s… I don't really give away those secrets because that band [are] so odd. I don’t know what’s gonna happen myself.”

The guitarist then concluded: “I’m on good ground with those dudes and we’re talking about some cool shit. I’ll leave it at.”

Sleep, currently composed of Pike plus vocalist/bassist Al Cisneros and drummer Jason Roeder, formed in 1990 and have released four records since: Volume One (1991), Holy Mountain (1992), Jerusalem / Dopesmoker (1999/2012) and The Sciences (2018). Holy Mountain and Jerusalem / Dopesmoker especially are continually acclaimed, the latter previously being described by Metal Hammer as “a masterclass in both the stoner and doom metal genres”.

Pike is currently promoting the new High On Fire album, Cometh The Storm , which comes out on April 19 via Mnrk Heavy. Its release will be followed by an extensive tour of Europe in June and July 2024. Dates are available below and tickets are on sale now .

Louder’s resident Gojira obsessive was still at uni when he joined the team in 2017. Since then, Matt’s become a regular in Prog and Metal Hammer, at his happiest when interviewing the most forward-thinking artists heavy music can muster. He’s got bylines in The Guardian, The Telegraph, NME, Guitar and many others, too. When he’s not writing, you’ll probably find him skydiving, scuba diving or coasteering.

SLEEP Announces New Tour Dates

Legendary stoner rock band SLEEP has just announced a string of summer North American tour dates. On the heels of its sold-out U.S. tour run last September, the California trio will return to the stage this summer by popular demand. Live dates in New York City (June 22) and Los Angeles (June 26) will bookend an appearance at the Sled Island Music & Arts Festival in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on June 24, where the group will share the stage with THE DANDY WARHOLS , BLONDE REDHEAD , THE BUZZCOCKS and more.

SLEEP tour dates:

June 22 - New York, NY - Terminal 5 June 24 - Calgary, AB - Sled Island Festival June 26 - Los Angeles, CA - The Wiltern

Once referred to as "the ultimate stoner rock band", SLEEP evolved in the early 1990s and has exerted a considerable, consistent influence on modern heavy music ever since. The group split in 1997 after the release of two hugely influential albums — "Holy Mountain" and "Dopesmoker" — returning triumphantly in 2009 when it performed two U.K. shows as part of All Tomorrow's Parties ' ( ATP ) The Fans Strike Back festival, playing "Holy Mountain" in its entirety along with selections from "Dopesmoker" . The rabid fan response to the 2009 shows resulted in a run of U.S. live dates in September 2010 that immediately sold out. In celebrating the band's return, The New York Times referred to the trio as "excellent" and the Chicago Tribune called SLEEP "stoner-rock titans."

Even during their near two-decade studio absence, SLEEP's influence loomed large over metal and stoner rock. Formed in 1990 in San Jose, CA, the power trio found immediate acclaim after the release of their debut album Volume One in 1991, and the accolades never ceased.

SLEEP's output (which consisted of undeniable genre touchstones like Sleep's Holy Mountain and Jerusalem / Dopesmoker) slowed with their hiatus in 1998, though their story was far from over. After reforming for a triumphant live reunion in 2009, SLEEP (Al Cisneros, Matt Pike and Jason Roeder) resurfaced with the one-off singles "The Clarity" (2014) and "Leagues Beneath" (2018). Then came the surprise album The Sciences (winkingly released on April 20, 2018). The album found a perfect home with the genre-agnostic aficionados at Third Man Records, and its release was followed by sold-out shows around the world. -- as another 4/20 surprise, 2021 will see Third Man release a 2x12" version of "The Clarity" accompanied by "Leagues Beneath.” This new release contains stunning all new artwork and etchings by Dave Kloc and was entirely remastered by Bob Weston of Chicago Mastering Service.“

Sleep Token Announce 2024 North American Tour

Sleep Token have revealed a North American tour for early 2024, the enigmatic British alt-metal act breaking the mystery today (Jan. 18) after they  wiped the contents of their official Instagram page  earlier this week, subsequently posting a link to one of their songs that sent fans theorizing.

Now, Sleep Token have at least one post on their social media grid — the announcement for their North American tour to start on April 27, the concerts bolstered by support from Empire State Bastard.

"Those wishing to attend may register their interest at teethofgod.com to obtain their unique access code, in preparation for the exclusive presale window - which begins Wednesday at 10AM local time," the band states on social media.

See the dates near the bottom of this page.

READ MORE:  Fans Share How They Would Explain Sleep Token to Their Grandparents

What's Up With Sleep Token?

Over the last week, several Sleep Token fans on Reddit , X (formerly Twitter) and elsewhere engaged in frenzied speculation after some on social media alleged that someone had apparently uncovered the birth certificate and address of one of Sleep Token's members, the musician known as III. However, this has not been confirmed and no such documentation has been made readily available.

As fans know, Sleep Token, including their bandleader, Vessel, are notoriously masked and anonymous , performing only in costume.

Around the same time as the birth certificate talk, Sleep Token deleted everything from their Instagram and changed their bio to include the quote, "Nothing lasts forever." Some suggested the rumored leak moved the band to clear their account, but Sleep Token didn't explain.

A day later, still without context, the band shared a link to the song "Ascensionism" from their latest album, 2023's  Take Me Back to Eden . It further fueled the conversation on places like /r/SleepToken , where fans dissected the post's meaning via lines in the song such as, "You make me wish I could disappear" and "You're gonna watch me ascend."

Are you ready to see Sleep Token on tour in North America? Prior to today's announcement, Sleep Token had already revealed Australian dates for this spring, select 2024 U.S. festival gigs, and their Radio City Music Hall show in New York on May 22.

The best fitness trackers we’ve tested do much more than count your steps. Many help you train for a marathon, guide your workout recovery, provide insights into sleep quality and even monitor for life-threatening health anomalies.

From the entry-level Fitbit Inspire 3 to the advanced Apple Watch Series 9 , the best fitness trackers also perform the basics like monitoring heart rate, recording physical activity and rest, and providing daily progress reports. Some devices, like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, even have on-the-spot SpO2 and ECG readings.

Many can also pay for groceries, play music, answer texts, and check the weather, including the Fitbit Charge 6 , Fitbit Sense 2 , and Garmin Forerunner 265 . But with so many capable devices to choose from, honing in on just one can be tricky, but that's where we come in.

We've put the most popular fitness trackers and smartwatches to the test over numerous weeks by wearing them walking, running, biking, swimming — even sleeping — to see which models excel and which couldn't make it past the starting block.

Jane McGuire is Tom's Guide's Fitness Editor and she's spent years writing about all things health and fitness. She crossed the finish line of her last marathon in 3:38, with the Garmin Forerunner 965 on her wrist.

How to set up the Fitbit Charge 6.

1. Fitbit Charge 6

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The Fitbit Charge 6 is Fitbit's flagship fitness tracker, replacing the Fitbit Charge 5 in the brand's line-up of devices. It has several exciting updates compared to the Charge 5 — the haptic side button is back, making it easier to navigate than before. Plus, you can now use the Charge 6 as a heart rate tracker when using NordicTrack, Peloton and Tonal gym equipment.

It's also the first Fitbit fitness tracker to get Google Maps, YouTube Music and Google Wallet. However, Charge 6 users will need a Google Account now.

Of course, you buy a fitness tracker to track your fitness, and the Charge 6 does a solid job of this. Built-in GPS lets users accurately track runs, hikes and bike rides outside. It also has more sports modes than the Charge 5, allowing you to mix up your training.

During testing, we were impressed by how comfortable the Charge 6 is around the wrist and how easy it is to read in the bright sunlight. Simply put, the Fitbit Charge 6 is one of the best fitness trackers for most people today.

The upgrades made on the Fitbit Charge 5, namely the re-addition of a side button and the Google apps, have made what was already a great fitness tracker even better, in our eyes.

Best value fitness tracker

A photo of the sleep tracking on the Fitbit Inspire 3

2. Fitbit Inspire 3

The Fitbit Inspire 3 is the best value fitness tracker because it nails the basics: heart rate monitoring, accurate workout tracking and logging sleep stages. The fact that it doesn't have built-in GPS is slightly disappointing — you can connect it to your phone's GPS — but the Inspire 3 makes up for it with other features, such as Fitbit's inspiring (get it?) community of fitness-focused users. You can participate in challenges to out-pace friends, colleagues or even strangers.

For $100, you'll get Fitbit's Active Zone Minutes metric, ten days of battery life, touch controls, and, in the biggest update from the Fitbit Inspire 2, a bright, beautiful AMOLED screen. The Fitbit unit is only available in black but is sold with three different band colors — black, lilac and morning glow. The wristband comes in two sizes: small and large.

During testing, we loved how lightweight and comfortable this little tracker was to wear for 24/7 health tracking. We also appreciated how much more premium the tracker feels with a color screen. It won't be for everyone, but if you're looking for an affordable fitness tracker, you can't go wrong with the Inspire 3.

The Fitbit Inspire 3 won Best Fitness Tracker in the 2023 Tom's Guide Fitness Awards because you get an awful lot for under $100, and we were impressed at how easy it was to use.

Best fitness tracker under $50

amazfit band 5

3. Amazfit Band 5

The Amazfit Band 5 is a $50 fitness tracker that promises many of the marquee features found in more premium smartwatches but at a fraction of the price. It has blood oxygen (SpO2) readings, stress monitoring, high heart rate alerts, Amazon Alexa built-in, sleep tracking and several other tools found in pricier offerings.

In our testing, the fitness and sleep tracking on the Amazfit Band 5 were good, not great, but respectable for the low cost while still offering more than other ~$50 trackers. Better yet, the 15-day battery life meant we didn't need to worry about charging it all the time.

Best fitness tracking smartwatch

4. fitbit sense 2.

The Fitbit Sense 2 is the company's top-shelf smartwatch that comes with more advanced health and wellness features than the Versa line. During our testing, we found that the Fitbit Sense 2 helped us gain a better overall view of our health.

Compared to the original Fitbit Sense, the Sense 2 features an upgraded design, interface and EDA sensor, making for Fitbit's most holistic smartwatch yet. An update to the stress-detecting EDA (electrodermal activity) sensor plays a large role in the device’s success: now called cEDA ('c' for continuous,) the sensor monitors stress levels or heightened responses throughout the day, prompting the user to take action on mood monitoring with Body Response notifications.

As one of the best fitness trackers, the Sense 2 works with both iOS and Android and comes with on-board GPS, a native app store Alexa and more. No longer is Fitbit just a brand with products for tracking our steps: Fitbit devices like the Fitbit Sense 2 make for excellent smartwatches, too.

Garmin Forerunner 265 recovery features.

5. Garmin Forerunner 265

Garmin makes the best sports watches you can buy, and the Forerunner 265 is one of our favorites. This mid-range Garmin running watch has a bright, beautiful AMOLED screen, which is easy to see, even in direct sunlight.

The Forerunner 265 has the addition of triathlon and multisport modes, allowing you to track all of your training in one session. The 265 also comes in two different sizes — 42mm and 46mm. We tested the smaller watch and found it extremely neat and lightweight on the wrist. Like a lot of the other best Garmins , you can also download Garmin's training plans onto the watch, helping you run and race smarter.

The Forerunner 265 also has a lot of Garmin's more premium features on board, including the Morning Report and the Training Readiness Score, both of which help you get a better understanding of your overall health.

If you're on a budget, consider the Garmin Forerunner 165 , instead. It doesn't have quite as advanced training features as the 265 and lacks dual-band GPS, but it's still a great tracker for the money. Unsure which to go with? Check out our Garmin Forerunner 165 vs Forerunner 265 face-off .

Woman wearing Garmin Venu 3

6. Garmin Venu 3

The Garmin Venu 3 is among the  best Garmin smartwatches on the market today. A capable workout and wellness companion, the Venu 3 is also plenty stylish. $449 gets you a solid fitness tracker with accurate onboard GPS, mirrored smartphone notifications, an on-wrist voice assistant and more.

Garmin lacks a large third-party app store and continues to steer clear of LTE support. However, the Venu 3 does support mobile payments and provides offline music storage, allowing users to truly leave their smartphones at home without worry.

Other new features include nap-tracking and a virtual sleep coach. The Venu 3 also provides daily rest and recovery summaries along with wellness suggestions. Plus, it tracks an enormous range of physical activities. And 14 days of battery life means you won't often be reaching for a charger.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6

7. Samsung Galaxy Watch 6

Whether you've got a Samsung phone or not, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 is an impressive fitness tracker and one of the best smartwatches you can buy. The Watch 6 has a huge focus on one important health metric many of us overlook: sleep.

The watch has a more comprehensive Sleep Score Factor analysis that accumulates sleep time, sleep cycle, awake time, plus physical and mental recovery data to help users understand their quality of sleep. Users will also be assigned an animal that best represents their sleep behaviors, complete with a correlated watch face dedicated to the cause.

Like older versions of the watch, you still get the body composition analysis feature, plus SPo2, ECG and heart rate monitoring. There is also a new Personalized Heart Rate Zone feature for workouts and an Irregular Heart Rhythm notification feature that detects signs of aFib.

Like the Apple Watch Series 9, the Galaxy Watch 6 has a skin temperature sensor to inform things like menstrual cycles, stress and sleep data.

A photo of the Whoop with a blue wristband on the wrist

8. Whoop 4.0

This one is a little different — the Whoop 4.0 isn't a fitness tracker you can go out and buy but one you subscribe to. There is no screen or in-built GPS. Instead, the Whoop band focuses on recovery and heart rate to help users better understand their body and its response to training.

The Whoop 4.0 is undoubtedly a brilliant health tracker for anyone looking for enhanced health insights — there are clear reasons why many top athletes have been spotted with one on their wrist or around their bicep. For a coach or trainer, this data is invaluable.

We've yet to touch on insights such as skin temperature, which can be used as a metric to see when your core body temperature is rising —  this could be a sign a user is getting ill. The Whoop 4.0 also provides industry-leading sleep-tracking data.

Are you looking for a fitness tracker you can wear in the gym or on your run to get live feedback? If so, the Whoop is probably not for you. But if recovery metrics are your number one focus, once you get used to it, the Whoop 4.0 occupies a unique place in the market.

Best fitness tracker for iPhone users

Apple Watch Series 9

9. Apple Watch Series 9

With the exception of a subtle pink finish, there's nothing noteworthy looks-wise with the Apple Watch Series 9. Instead, its S9 processor introduces the watch's most significant performance boost in years, powering a brighter display and faster Siri interactions. An improved ultra-wideband chip enables new ecosystem functions, too. What’s more, the new  double tap gesture  makes it possible to carry out a slew of Apple Watch Series 9 controls one-handed.

Like the Apple Watch Series 8, the Series 9 has a skin temperature sensor, which allows users to get more accurate sleep data and menstrual cycle tracking. While not much has changed from a fitness-tracking perspective, during testing, we found the Apple Watch 9 faster. When switching between apps and navigating menus, the Series 9 certainly felt more responsive next to the Series 8. Using the new Smart Stack UI in watchOS 10 felt effortless as well.

The display is also brighter on the Apple Watch 9, at 2,000 nits. That's double the brightness rating of the Apple Watch Series 8, making it easier to see your stats on the move. Thanks to all the performance upgrades, this is the best Apple Watch you can buy right now.

Oura Ring Generation 3 review

10. Oura Ring Generation 3

The Oura ring isn't your typical fitness tracker. For one, it’s literally a ring, so you wear it on your index finger rather than your wrist. It also doesn’t have any buttons or physical controls. That said, while you might not be able to see your pace on the run, the Oura ring tracks just about everything else when it comes to your health. The ring monitors your sleep, heart rate, respiratory rate, and body temperature. It also features a 3D accelerometer for detecting movement.

It’s available in four different metal finishes, but you’ll need to use a sizing kit to find the proper fit. While the sizing process is a little tedious, it’s essential to fitting something you’re supposed to wear 24/7. Once on your finger, you'll also need to pay a $5.99 monthly subscription to use the ring.

During testing, we found that the ring came into its own as a sleep tracker. The Oura ring makes it easy to see, at a glance, how well you’ve slept and where you need to improve. Here's more on the Oura Ring vs Apple Watch 8 as a sleep tracker . It can also be synced with Natural Cycles to make it easier to track your menstrual cycle.

Read our full Oura Ring Generation 3 review

When buying a fitness tracker, you should first evaluate your needs. What do you want to track? If you're only using it at the gym to count your steps and your heart rate, a simpler, less expensive fitness tracker will suit you fine.

If, however, you plan to do more outdoor activities, such as running or biking, you may want a fitness tracker with built-in GPS, so you can more accurately see where you're going, and where you went. Dedicated runners and athletes will want to check out our best GPS watches page, too.

If you plan to use the fitness tracker for swimming, you'll want to make sure it's not only waterproof, but that it can also track your laps in the pool.

Many of the best smartwatches have fitness-tracking capabilities, too, and have additional features such as responding to text messages and paying for purchases. But there are trade-offs. However, smartwatches as a whole tend to be more expensive and have shorter battery life than dedicated fitness trackers.

Apple Watch SE and Fitbit Charge 6 on the same wrist.

For each new fitness tracker, we evaluate its hardware design and comfort; you need to be able to wear the device all day, and we’ve found that some larger trackers don’t fit well on smaller wrists. If the device has a touchscreen, we look to see how readable it is, especially in bright sunlight. We also examine how easy it is to navigate the fitness trackers' menus; you don't want to have to dig through multiple screens to change your music if you're out running.

We also evaluate features such as step counting and sleep monitoring, distance calculations and when applicable, GPS and heart rate accuracy. And, we see how well a manufacturer's battery life claims hold up in real-world testing.

Finally, we test how well a device pairs with its companion app, and evaluate the experience of using the two together. We also look to see what features the device's app supports, such as coaching and diet tracking, and if it can sync data with third-party apps, such as MyFitnessPal.

Jon Bon Jovi Recalls Telling Michael Jackson the 'Fun Story' of How He Pulled Off a Disguise on Tour (Exclusive)

  • Jon Bon Jovi filled PEOPLE in on a certain featured item in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's latest exhibit
  • "We bought these great wigs and hats and mustaches," the rocker says
  • The moment was so fun, in fact, that Jon later told the story to Michael Jackson

Jon Bon Jovi is looking back at a memory he shared with Michael Jackson .

While speaking exclusively with PEOPLE as he and Bon Jovi celebrate the opening of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 's latest exhibit centered around their band, the rock star, 62, reflects on one item featured and recalls memories attached to it.

In the Cleveland-based museum's exhibit, there is a hat with fake curly black hair that Jon wore as a disguise so he could walk around undetected during the band's Slippery When Wet Tour in 1986.

"In order to be there amongst all the fans in front of our own hotel, we bought these great wigs and hats and mustaches," Jon recalls. "We actually did pull it off in Australia. It was a lot of fun."

The moment was so fun, in fact, that Jon later told the story to Jackson, who died in 2009 . "I shared that story with Michael Jackson, who pretended as though he'd never done anything like that," he says with a laugh. "But he had done it a lot of times, so it was a fun story to share."

Jon first met Jackson years ago, when both were in Tokyo during the same period of time. During an appearance on  Jimmy Kimmel Live! in April, the rocker recalled partying with the "Thriller" singer's pet chimp Bubbles .

According to Jon, he was under the impression that he and Jackson had become "friends" so he invited the late artist to spend time with him and Bon Jovi on their hotel floor.

"Unfortunately he didn't come, but he sends Bubbles the chimp as his representative ," Jon recalled. "That was big. Bubbles comes down and wreaks havoc. Bubbles parties like a rock star."

Bubbles, Jon added, was "jumping on the bed" and "putting on a show." He also said the animal's presence felt like "a lifetime" and hotel management later threatened to throw the band out.

 Emma McIntyre/Getty

At the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's new full-floor exhibit, titled Bon Jovi: Forever , fans will get to explore Bon Jovi's iconic music history. Alongside Jon, the band also consists of members David Bryan, Tico Torres, John Shanks, Phil X, Everett Bradley and Hugh McDonald. (Original bassist Alec John Such left the band in 1994 and longtime guitarist Richie Sambora  left in 2013.)

The exhibit's opening was timed with the recently released docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story and will "showcase the band's story from inception to the present, celebrating their 40-plus-year career, including countless milestones and accolades," per a press release.

Never-before-seen artifacts from each of the band members will also be present, alongside images, audio and video that will "tell the story of the work, the art, the business and the legacy of one of the biggest bands of all time," the release adds.

"There's a lot of history. There's a lot there for fans to come and see," Jon tells PEOPLE of the exhibit. "We were archiving everything for the 40th anniversary, as well as the documentary, and then the museum came to us and said they want us to do a big display celebrating, so we gave them a lot of the prime elements of the archive." Tickets to visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame can be purchased here .

'Stay tuned,' Black Keys drummer says on reasons for tour downgrade and management split

The Black Keys Perform At The O2 Academy Brixton

The drummer for rockers the Black Keys hinted Monday that an explanation for the band's recent troubles is coming.

In a post on X, Patrick Carney gave a short message to fans: "We got f---ed. I’ll let you all know how so it doesn’t happen to you. Stay tuned."

The note follows a round of headlines for the Ohio-born duo that have signaled turmoil.

Late last month, the band announced it was canceling its planned tour of arenas in favor of more intimate venues — though dates for the new shows have yet to be announced.

Then last week, the band said it had split with a management team led by entertainment executive Irving Azoff. The news, first reported by The New York Times, was confirmed by Azoff to Variety, who called it an “amicable parting.” The Black Keys had been with Azoff and another manager, Steve Moir, since 2021.

A representative for Azoff said he had no comment. A representative for Moir did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Azoff is best known as the manger of the Eagles and the former CEO of Ticketmaster and former chairman of its parent company, Live Nation. Another Azoff-connected group has been directly implicated in the U.S. Justice Department's anti-monopoly suit against Ticketmaster and Live Nation . In their complaint, federal prosecutors named Oak View Group, a live entertainment advisory service, as having a relationship with Live Nation that unduly influenced the market.

Azoff cofounded Oak View, though is no longer listed as an executive there. He is not directly named in the Justice Department's suit.

In addition to the Eagles, Azoff has also managed legendary artists like Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Journey and Bon Jovi. Over the years, he earned a reputation for the bare-knuckle tactics in negotiating on behalf of the groups and artists he represents. The L.A. Times has reported that Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker said they’d hired Azoff because he “impressed us with his taste for the jugular … and his bizarre spirit.”

And at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Eagles co-founder Don Henley said, "As I’ve said before, he may be Satan — but he’s  our  Satan."
