Photos/Review: Skinny Puppy’s Final Tour Leaves Them On An Upward Spiral

Being misunderstood by those who only look to the surface is a long-standing problem that negatively affects people’s lives. In the world of theatrical live music performances, this has been a reoccurring dilemma. Dark Industrial/Electro band Skinny Puppy has often been misunderstood as well as slightly underrated. Still, those who grew up with their horror-inspired antics understand and love the band who influenced so many industrial bands to come. This local Los Angeles band, formerly from Canada, has just finished a magnificent forty-year run that began in the 1980’s. Skinny Puppy, a band Nine Inch Nails used to open for, played four Los Angeles shows at The Belasco Theater in honor of their long tour life that is now completed. 

Despite the announcement that Skinny Puppy has just disbanded, these four live shows were anything but somber. As an attendee of two out of the four shows, I didn’t have a dull moment during any of the two-hour sets. The first show was December 1st, and the last was December 5th, 2023, where they ended on an uplifting note by singing Happy Birthday to lead vocalist Ogre. 

Opening for Skinny Puppy at these shows was an industrial duo called Lead Into Gold, a project of Ministry’s former bassist Paul Barker. They released a new album in 2023 titled  The Eternal Present , supporting this live, of course. They possess the more classic elements of the electronic vibe of keyboards dominating vocals. The keytar was also used towards the end, which was a powerful and fun addition. The vocals mostly carried an echo to them that made any lyrics difficult to understand, but when the heavy bass beats would chime in, it gave the music an extra punch. The backdrop screens were filled with projected video images and color schemes. This created the effect that the band members were engulfed in the backdrop colors as well, and their shadows appeared. The video colors followed the beat changes, which was a nice integrating effect. Belonging to the Wax Trax! label, they all came from a similar clan as Skinny Puppy. 

Lead Into Gold

Around nine-fifteen or so, Skinny Puppy took the stage, and started the evening off with their song “Brap,” which made an appropriate entrance for them, since it is a term they made up for getting into the performing style they thrive in. They also mixed in another two versions of “Brap” as well later in the set. For those who are old school fans of Skinny Puppy, it is known that Ogre and cEvin Key bring plenty of visual theatrics to the live stage, which are meant to enhance the musical direction further. Skinny Puppy sometimes portrays disturbing images, but their music has animal rights activism, anti-chemical warfare, and clean earth subject matter, among other noble topics. They explore the idea that humans create their own demise through these selfish acts, destroying the beauty of this planet and deeming it unsafe and almost uninhabitable. 

On the last special evening of Skinny Puppy’s final tour, they managed to dip into twelve of their albums, playing some greats such as “Tormentor,” “Warlock,” “Immortal,” “Dig It,” and “Assimilate,” to name a few. Starting off the live performance was Ogre behind a shower-like a white curtain that depicted a shadow puppet show with “floating” elements such as guns, ghosts, etc. This continued while he made his debut appearance to the front facing the audience revealing him wearing an alien head with red glowing eyes. He wore this for most of the set, and another helmeted character with black horns would stab him in the leg or try to poke and prod at him in different ways while he was singing. After a video image of Aleister Crowley art, which held the premise of some of the stage antic ideologies, there were a few different interesting live feed cameras at play. This included cEvin Key wearing Ray Bans with cameras in them standing behind his keyboard that projected live feed on the video backdrop screen. The horned character would also create live feed with his video camera, that was then swirled around abstractly with bright colors on the screen. 

Other visual effects that entertained the crowd included a dead fetus in a jar, that was later released, and possibly brought to life. Then there were some exposed brains, and for a visual performance art interpreted, one could say this was a rebirth and symbolism to expose one’s mind to the reality within. On another note, if someone unfamiliar with Skinny Puppy walked into the theater seeing a guy with an alien head singing, while some other horned dude performed invasive experiments on him, they probably would just walk right back out. As humorous as it can seem, it all has a great message, and that message can often be missed by people who only see one side of a coin. Feeling like you are suffocating and alienated on your own planet can be a very unpleasant experience, an experience that many individuals can relate to these days with the way the world has all but blown itself up. 

On each of the final four nights, the Skinny Puppy setlist remained similar, except the two encores varied in their song choices, which created that extra element of surprise. On the final evening, the three songs of the second encore were “God’s Gift (Maggot),” “Assimilate,” and “Candle.” A perfect ending to a wildly entertaining evening, where as the previous nights only had one or two of the second encore songs. Ending just before eleven-thirty, Skinny Puppy said their goodbyes, and after those fortunate enough to be standing out front of the venue at the time got to see the black pickup truck cruise by with Skinny Puppy written on the side, all decked out acknowledging the real aspect of it all vanishing before our eyes  

Skinny Puppy is and will always be one unique band that has pushed the gothic and industrial scene into where it is today. For those who were not born or lived in a box during the eighties and early nineties, the tragedy of missing out on Skinny Puppy can not be rectified. Despite their choice to not continue touring, which is more than likely to actually happen, unlike Motley Crue, Kiss, or The Scorpions who have had quite a few “final” tours, Skinny Puppy is still very relevant today. Both Ogre and cEvin Key have their solo or other music projects that will most likely continue. They make for a great dark gothic club music dance vibe that will no doubt be continuing to be on the DJ rotations into the future. Therefore, they will certainly not be forgotten.

SKINNY PUPPY announce second leg of final tour

Back in April and May, Skinny Puppy hit the road for the first time in eight years, kicking off what the industrial pioneers are calling their " Final Tour " in celebration of their 40th anniversary. Today (July 25th), they announced a second leg of the farewell trek, which, like the first leg, will feature Lead Into Gold, a.k.a. Ministry OG Paul Barker, playing in support.

The newly announced 10 dates will kick off on November 8th at House of Blues in Dallas making stops across North America in Chicago, Vancouver, San Francisco, and more before wrapping up in Los Angeles at Belasco on December 5th. Check out the full itinerary below.

"It's been eight long years since we've toured," the band commented in a joint statement, "and there is no better way to end our run as a group than with a tour celebrating our 40th anniversary."

Paul Barker 's (bassist of MINISTRY ) solo project LEAD INTO GOLD will be releasing a third album via Toronto-based Artoffact Records on April 21, 2023. The genre-defying and haunting "The Eternal Present" sees Barker 's storytelling at a new height.

On the upcoming tour, Barker comments, "I've always loved SKINNY PUPPY and their unique shows, so I'm thrilled to be a part of this tour! Plus it's always fun to tour with friends!"

A producer, composer, and touring musician who has toured as a member of PUSCIFER and collaborated with the likes of Jello Biafra , Ian MacKaye , Timothy Leary and William Burroughs , Barker is looking forward to getting back on the road with his friends in SKINNY PUPPY . Canadian industrial rockers Skinny Puppy are embarking on what they are calling their final tour for their 40th anniversary.

The Vancouver-bred group shared the news on social media along with North American tour dates starting in April.

The group says in the post  it is excited to perform its "best shows'' for fans as part of its farewell tour.

Skinny Puppy was formed in 1982 and has released 13 albums since then.

The group disbanded in the '90s and reunited in the early 2000s.

Canadian stops for the tour include Montreal and Toronto on April 25 and 26. A date for Vancouver has yet to be announced.

In its post, the band says, "To our West Coast fans, don't worry! We'll see you soon!"

Skinny Puppy announces 12 more North American dates this fall to close out “final tour”

Legendary industrial act Skinny Puppy has extended what it’s billing as its “final tour,” adding 12 more North American concerts this fall as the group continues to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

“We have added more special markets to help close out our final tour,” Skinny Puppy wrote on Facebook .

The new run of shows — which follows a  24-date North American tour earlier this year — opens Nov. 8 in Dallas and continues through Dec. 5 in Los Angeles, with two nights apiece set for Chicago, Vancouver and Los Angeles. There are a variety of presales underway now or starting later today, with the general on-sale set for 10 a.m. local time Friday, July 28. Head over to skinnypuppy.com for full details.

Formed in Vancouver in 1982, Skinny Puppy — anchored by cEvin Key and Nivek Ogre — has been hailed as a cornerstone act in the industrial and electro-industrial genres.

Skinny Puppy Announce Final Tour

The trek will celebrate the industrial pioneers’ 40th anniversary

Skinny Puppy are hitting the road one last time. The industrial pioneers have announced their final tour, which kicks off on April 6 in San Antonio, Texas at the Aztec Theater. Lead Into Gold will serve as special guests. A west coast leg is expected to be added in the near future.

“It’s been eight long years since we’ve toured, and there is no better way to end our run as a group than with a tour celebrating our 40th anniversary,” the band said in a statement. “To our west coast fans, don’t worry! We’ll see you soon!” Skinny Puppy

Tickets will go on sale this Friday February 10 at 10am at  Ticketmaster.com .

Skinny Puppy released their debut album Remission in 1984. Their influence can be felt in acts like Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, Fear Factory, and more. Last year at Hellfest in France, the festival curated an industrial lineup for the main stage that featured Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Killing Joke, Health, and Youth Code on the day that Nine Ninch Nails were headlining. Skinny Puppy’s last proper LP was 2013’s Weapon .

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the industrial pioneers

Skinny Puppy have announced a farewell tour that will also serve as a celebration of their 40th anniversary as a band.

The Spring 2023 North American trek kicks off April 6th in San Antonio, Texas, and runs through May 9th in Seattle. Lead into Gold will provide support.

A Live Nation pre-sale begins Wednesday (February 8th) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster using the code CHORUS , while general ticket sales begin Friday (February 10th) at 10 a.m. local time. Fans can also purchase tickets via StubHub .

The tour primarily routes through the South, East Coast, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest, but a comment from the band in a press release implies that there will be a West Coast leg of the farewell outing added in the near future.

Skinny Puppy is a three-piece Canadian industrial rock/ electro-industrial band formed in 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia, currently consisting of cEvin Key, Nivek Orgre and Mark Walk.

The band formed when Kevin Crompton (aka cEvin Key) and Kevin Graham Ogilvie (aka Nivek Ogre) partnered up with the intention of taking on a more experimental path with their music. They recorded their first cassette, “Back & Forth” in 1984 and had the help of Dave “Rave” Ogilvie. The first Skinny Puppy show also happened in the same year at Unovis, Vancouver, followed shortly by their first EP entitled “Remission.” A mere year later they released their first full-length album, “Bites,” all helping them gain popularity; to add to their popularity, they signed a distribution deal with Capitol Records/EMI to help them reach a bigger audience. Consequently, they were able to tour for three years in North America and Europe.

The band eventually used their platform to advocate for animal rights, starting with their “VIVIsectVI” which was released in 1988. The album lyrically touched upon issues about chemical warfare, deforestation and criticism of pollution. By 1992 they released three more albums, each with a tour that followed, each with a graphic film that would play behind the band; all of which, fared well for the band. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances the band ended up breaking up despite their new signing with American Recordings in the early 90s. The breakup saw Key and Ogre parting ways and taking on their own separate projects; Ogre pairing up with Martin Atkins with their industrial super group Pigface, and Key working on various side projects, including his own solo work.

The band did have a reunion with Key and Ogre performing under the name Skinny Puppy again in 2000 at the Doomsday Festival in Dresden, Germany. The performance was ultimately filmed and released as a live special DVD which was released a year after the original performance. This was followed by their first track released in several years entitled “Optimissed” and it was featured on the soundtrack for the film “Underworld.” By 2004 they released their first album in years, “The Greater Wrong of the Right” followed be a North American and Europe Tour. Despite extensive live performances, rumors of a new album to follow “The Greater Wrong of the Right” had been afloat, but another album was not released until 2010. Following “HanDover” they released “Weapon” three years later, which was also followed by an extensive tour.

Live reviews

Skinny Puppy is one of the most exhilarating bands to see live both musically and visually. They have been associated as being one of the founders of the electro-industrial genre and have incorporated many unconventional tactics into their performance and music. The band’s sound is often very dark, eerie, and heavy. They have very metallic sounding drum beats that are harsh and hit you like a ton of bricks. Their synthesizers also sound very aggressive and staccato conveying their industrial sound. The guitar is presented in a very rhythmic manner with short blasts of crunchy, distortion. The lead singer, Nivek Ogre, runs his vocals through distorted effects for a more intense and abrasive sound. Skinny Puppy’s sound is very unique and their influence can clearly be seen through such artists as Nine Inch Nails. The darkness of Skinny Puppy’s music is also nicely complimented with the lyrical themes that are attached to the songs. Their lyrics cover such controversial topics as politics, animal rights, drug abuse, and religion. If Skinny Puppy’s music isn’t intense enough, their stage theatrics will be sure to put their audience in complete awe. They approach their concerts as a type of performance art. Ogre has dressed up in animal masks, performed with mud covered all over him, and has participated in mock executions on stage. The stage is often dimly lit with bright strobe lights flashing all over and films projected in the background. To say the least their performance is nothing less than in your face and completely engrossing.

Skinny Puppy is sure to never deliver a dull moment musically or visually while performing, and if ever granted an opportunity to see these legends of industrial music live, you should immediately jump on the opportunity.

Report as inappropriate

Following the career of Skinny Puppy has not always been easy for fans due to numerous hiatuses, breaks in recording and lineup alterations. However the electro-industrial founders have always had a strong following in both their homeland of Canada, the States and the UK and since their indefinite reunion in 2003 the fans have continually packed out arenas in order to see the highly recommended live show.

There have been a host of new albums since 2003 and a lot of tonight's setlist focuses on the newer material from the likes of 'HanDover' and 'Weapon'. It goes down well and the band has really thought about their lighting and instrumentals when bringing these tracks to life on the big stage. They still acknowledge the dedication of older fans by playing 'Chainsaw' which gains big cheers. Whether the group are genre founders or not is still disputed but they do show staggering innovation in their performance style.

The concert was great. Skinny Puppy put up an interesting show, with ever changing outfits and stages. The songs where mainly from the new album, and unfortunately did not play Assimilate at the end. Nevertheless the show was very entertaining. Seeing Frontline Assembly playing before them was an added bonus.

I was very lucky to see them in 2014 at the Commodore in Vancouver. They did a show with FLA and Haujobb. Skinny Puppy put on a great show...exciting to say the least.

I have been a fan since they really started. They did not let me down in any way.

Keanu Reeves' Band Dogstar Announces Summer Vacation Tour 2024 — See the Dates!

The band expressed feeling "stoked" for the North American tour in an Instagram post announcing the dates

Dogstar is getting ready to hit the road.

The rock band, which features bassist Keanu Reeves , guitarist/vocalist Bret Domrose and drummer Rob Mailhouse, announced dates for their upcoming Summer Vacation Tour 2024 on June 5.

"We are stoked to announce a new North American headline tour this August & September," read a post on the trio's social media page.

Kicking off Aug. 8 at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis, the tour will make stops throughout the United States and Canada before wrapping Sept. 21 at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Hotel & Casino in Maricopa, Arizona.

"We are having the best time out here on the road interacting with fans at these shows, we wanted to keep it going," said the band in a statement about the tour. "For this next U.S. run starting in August, we will be planning to try out some new songs as well — hope to see you out there!” 

Tickets first become available through a presale on June 5 at noon local time, before the general onsale begins June 7 at 10 a.m. local time.

Following a 20-year hiatus, Dogstar returned to the stage for the first time last May at BottleRock Festival in Napa Valley, California. The band's new album, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees , is out now.

"When we reunited to try to write some songs, we never knew what an amazing journey we were beginning," said the band in a statement.

"The way this record came together was nothing short of magical for us," continued the trio. "The fun, the passion and the friendship shines through on these recordings and hopefully the variety of emotions will connect and resonate with everyone the way they do for us."

Dogstar was formed in the mid-'90s. The band's first EP  Quattro Formaggi  was released in 1996 and followed by two albums, 1996's  Our Little Visionary  and 2000's  Happy Ending , as well as a one-off cover of Mr. Big's "Shine" in 2004.

During Dogstar's initial run, the band appeared in films including 1999's  Me and Will  and 2005's  Ellie Parker . They also opened for David Bowie and Bon Jovi on tour and performed headlining shows with then-upcoming opening acts Rancid and Weezer.
