Company overview

Originally established in 1919 by Arthur Skill, Skills remains a family-owned, local company, with fantastic connections to the local community. Today Skills is managed by Arthur’s grandsons, Nigel Skill (Managing Director) and Simon Skill (Financial Director), as well Peter Hallam (Operations Director) who has worked alongside three generations of the Skills family in his career at the company.

Skills now operates a fleet of well over 50 modern touring coaches and continues to maintain its profile as a market leader in the industry. The company also operates its very own driver training school and has 4 dedicated travel shops in Nottingham, Derby, Loughborough and Beeston.

Skills operates from a purpose-built 3 acre site in Nottinghamshire which is located just 1½ miles from junction 26 of the M1 which means all areas of the UK are within easy reach.

Skills’ Travel Shop’s grand reopening

Skills’ refurbished Nottingham Travel Shop hosted an official unveiling today (Tuesday, 23 May).

The independent travel shop now looks after all customer’s travel needs from booking a UK coach holiday to arranging an around-the-world tour.

Retail Manager, Natalie Legge says: “With over 40 years of combined experience in the travel industry between the team at the Skills Nottingham branch, we are excited about our branch relaunch and the new adventures and holiday dreams that we will be able to make come true for our clients.”

“We are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new. As a totally independent travel agent we will work hard to match the holiday that is right for our clients from a host of excellent tour operators that we work closely with.”

Day Trip To Duxford Flying Day

Great day trip with Skills. Coach on time. Lovely driver, James, who as with all other Skills trips we’ve been on, was friendly and helpful. Other passengers also friendly. Easy access to the venue with the tickets supplied. Return journey as smooth as the outward one with James ready & waiting at the coach a good few minutes before we were due back. He was also very patient with one guest who was very late back & didn’t even have the courtesy to apologise to James for the delay. Definitely recommend Skills & all their staff, including the booking office, for trouble free, pleasant days out. I can’t comment on longer breaks as we’ve not done one yet.

Could have been better

Coach and driver were ok however the zoo was not that good! A lot of the animals where behind indoors so it was disappointing not any ones fault. Trip up to was fairly short and coming back. There was a cold wind at the zoo which made the visit unpleasant.

Harry Potter Tour

This is a brilliant day out definitely worth the money. Was a great experience, me and my Grandson loved it. Tom the driver was lovely and friendly. Yes pick up was late, but that was out of the drivers control due to a bad accident. Despite late pick up the driver still managed to get us there on time. First time booking with skills and would definitely book again with them.

Had another great holiday with Skills in Weymouth , the coach and driver ( Tina ) were up to your usual high standard and the trips informative and enjoyable as ever , However !! The choice of hotel ( Russell )left a lot to be desired , the worst room we've stayed in from a decorative point of view paper peeled off the walls , torn carpet and holes covered over by safety tape and cleanliness was minimal to say the least , do yourselves a favour and change the hotel , Having said that here's to our next holiday in Western Supermare Regards

Amazing experience

We both enjoyed a fantastic 2 days to The Cotswolds and Bath. The Holiday Inn in Swindon was very good and both the evening meal and the breakfast were very enjoyable helped by the friendly staff. Our driver Skot was amazing, friendly, efficient and immaculately presented.

Scotland Jacobite holiday

I recently had a weeks holiday in Scotland which was a great experience. I had a boat trip on Loch Ness, a trip to the Isle of Skye, a cable car ride to the Nevis range and a scenic train ride. The hotel was not far from Fort William town centre. The driver Andy and Cheryl the hostess were fantastic and did several short stops en route to locations to allow us to take photos of the amazing scenery. I have been travelling with Skills for years and had some great experiences going as far as Germany and Spain with them and i look forward to more hopefully

Scottish Wildlife &…

Just back from Scottish Wildlife & Wilderness experience. Very good tour, lots to see, deer, red kites. Cruise on loch Katrine. Lots of lovely scenery. Phil & Carolyn looked after us really well. Winnnock hotel was good, food excellent, our room was clean and spacious. Lots of walks from hotel on free day. Will definitely travel with Skills again

I went with skills on a work related…

I went with skills on a work related trip, the driver from Nottingham to Derby was not very helpful he did not tell us any information or take any names. The driver from Derby to London was very good. The house/hotel was very nice, but not recommended for coaches to get in and out of, I would say that the driver did really well to get the coach in and out of the car park. I would recommend skills for future trips.

Loughborough Male Voice Choir tour

Loughborough Male Voice Choir had a very busy programme on our recent weekend in Yorkshire. Organising 40+ singers and partners is not straightforward, but the bus and Carl's excellent service meant the transport simply worked as we would have wanted. And we sang well too.

Two day Chelsea FlowerShow

Two day Chelsea FlowerShow. Itinerary description was a tad obtuse, leading to several people misunderstanding drop off point (including me) as Covent Garden. On re-reading it stated central London-we were dropped at Marble Arch, next to underground station on central line. So spot on I’d say. Traffic the whole two days was dreadful, Brian our driver was amazing, patient and an all round star, he gave us as much time as was humanly possible. The hotel was-food wise-appalling. Buffet style meant I felt unsafe (with food allergies/intollerences) to eat, I can’t complain about room, but book in was chaos and suspect rooms were given as a first come first served basis. Suspect not a regular skills hotel choice, from talking to other people on trip. Pick up was the big problem for me, six pick up/drop off(think originally there was supposed to be two coaches, but surely some drop offs could have been condensed, minibus to one point for notts or leics groups?) combined with traffic meant I was on coach for a total of 17 hours over two days, with early rising (6.40am pick up, 6.30am breakfast) left me exhausted and stressed. I will gladly book on a day trip with skills. But not sure about any overnight trips.

Alfreton Road, Nottingham - Skills travel shop

At one time, skills motor coaches kept their fleet of buses in the yard behind this shop. the pumps supplied fuel for the buses as well as the public. it is now the site of the sunbourne court housing complex. skills was founded in 1919 by arthur skill. their main depot was on st peter's street. imagine paying 23p a gallon (4/8) for your petrol today instead of the current £6.
