Frequently asked questions about this route

The Machame Route is considered more challenging than some other routes. It involves trekking for 4-7 hours a day for about a week, with significant elevation gain each day. The Barranco Wall and the steep ascent up Kibo on summit night are particularly challenging, although no technical climbing skills are required.

Altitude sickness is a serious concern on the Machame Route. The route design includes acclimatization time, but trekkers should be well-informed about the risks, symptoms, and warning signs of altitude sickness. The seven-day+ variations of the route allow for more acclimatization and is generally recommended for those concerned about altitude sickness.

While both itineraries cover the same route, the 7-day option provides better acclimatization with appropriately elevated overnight camps and a less taxing schedule before the summit attempt. The 6-day itinerary, with its rapid altitude gain, is not recommended unless you are an experienced climber with prior acclimatization.

We do not believe in success rates as each hiker and individual can be very unique in their experience and bodies ability to acclimatize. That being said we would say a 7 day trek via the Machame route has a good chance of reaching the peak, a 8 day trek has an excellent chance of reaching the peak. Longer routes usually contribute significantly to higher success for reaching the summit.

The Machame Route is an ideal choice for many climbers due to its scenic beauty, providing varied landscapes and incredible views. It offers a balance of challenge and accessibility, with no need for technical climbing skills, and a high summit success rate, especially for the 7-day trek. The route's design, which includes a "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization strategy, contributes to its popularity and effectiveness.

Due to its popularity and lower cost, the Machame Route can be crowded. Many groups may be encountered along the trail, especially during peak seasons. To avoid crowds, some trekking groups start their journey earlier in the day.

People with serious medical conditions like heart disease, severe asthma, or uncontrolled diabetes should avoid climbing Kilimanjaro. Pregnant women and individuals with altitude sickness susceptibility should also consider other options. It's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before planning a climb.

Expect a challenging but rewarding experience. You'll encounter diverse terrains, from rain forests to arctic conditions. Acclimatization days are essential, and you should be prepared for long trekking hours, basic camping conditions, and altitude-related challenges.

Weather plays a pivotal role in deciding when to climb Kilimanjaro. Dry conditions ensure easier hikes and dry gear, while wet weather can turn your trek into a muddy challenge. However, Kilimanjaro's weather patterns have become unpredictable recently. You might encounter unexpected rainfalls even during what's traditionally considered a dry season or vice versa. Moreover, the dry seasons often see a surge in trekkers, leading to crowded routes. Read more about weather here .

Traditional showers are not available during most Kilimanjaro climbs. However, climbers can use wet wipes and water basins for basic hygiene. It's important to maintain cleanliness to avoid infections.

The summit attempt of Kilimanjaro typically begins at midnight, aiming for climbers to reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise. Undertaking this ascent at night serves several strategic purposes. Firstly, it allows for better acclimatization, as the gradual overnight climb aids the body in adapting to the high altitude. Secondly, the ground remains firmer during the night, as the sun during the day can soften the ice and snow, making the climb more challenging. Additionally, reaching the summit at dawn not only presents climbers with a breathtaking sunrise view but also provides a significant safety advantage. After the summit attempt, climbers have enough daylight to descend almost halfway back down the mountain. This descent is crucial as it brings climbers to a lower altitude with richer oxygen levels, which is much safer and helps in recovery following the exertion of the summit climb. This strategic timing of the ascent and descent ensures a safer and more rewarding experience for those tackling the challenge of Kilimanjaro.

My husband and I booked our Kilimanjaro climb through Shah Tours, and could not have been more pleased with our experience. To start, I think we had the best guides on the entire mountain. Baraka and Vincent were extremely knowledgeable, not only about mountain safety, but also about the history of Kilimanjaro, the flora, the fauna, the tribes in Tanzania, languages, and everything else we had questions about. We learned so much on our hike up to the summit, which made the whole experience even better than anticipated. Read more reviews .

Myself, and kids (three adults) enjoyed this lifetime experience. It was exciting, somehow tiring, but rewarding. The lovely two guides and many porters made our trip as easy as possible. The cook and assistant prepared just the right meal at the right time. Although we did not complete the hike to Uhuru peak (just 6 km away) due to high altitude sickness two of my children suffered, and we were advised to descend accordingly, we will never forget these days. I am planning to return in the near future. To conclude, I want to say thank you Shah Tours, thank Kalvin, Umari, Emanuel and entire crew for your passion, care and support extended to us throughout this wonderful hike. Read more reviews .

India’s Travel Spending: ‘Fast-Growing Pools of First-Time Tourists’

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

May 31st, 2024 at 7:48 AM EDT

Indian travelers are becoming an attractive source market, a McKinsey says. And a boom in the domestic travel market is leading to "substantial investments."

Bulbul Dhawan

India is becoming a fast-growing source of outbound tourism, according to a report by consulting firm McKinsey and Company.

The report reiterated McKinsey’s earlier projection of India becoming the fourth-largest domestic travel market in terms of spending by 2030 – it currently ranks sixth.

“They are developing fast-growing pools of first-time tourists,” the report said.

Indian travelers have reached a new peak in overseas spending . Data from India’s central bank showed that Indians spent $31.7 billion overseas in the 2023-24 financial year. About 54% of that amount was on travel, or $17 billion.

In a report released last year , Booking.com and McKinsey projected that travel spending by Indians would rise from $150 billion in 2019 to $410 billion by 2030.

Countries such as Thailand, Sri Lanka , and South Africa have eased visa requirements for Indian travelers. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Mauritius, and Turkey are also looking at India as an important source market for tourism and are stepping up marketing activities.

Domestic Travel Boom

Domestic travel makes up the bulk of travel spending in India, the McKinsey report said, and Indian airlines and hotels are making “substantial investments” to meet demand.

IndiGo last year placed the largest single purchase order in commercial aviation when it ordered 500 A320Neo-family jets. Air India placed orders for a total of 470 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing last year. Domestic carriers such as Akasa Air and SpiceJet are also expanding their networks within India and outside.

Meanwhile, hotel companies are ramping up their portfolios in India. The report added that the development focus has shifted from major metropolises to smaller cities .

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has a portfolio of over 200 operational hotels in the country, and more than 90 hotels are in its development pipeline. The company aims to open 25 hotels in the 2024-25 financial year . It has also announced its decision to revive its Gateway brand to cater to emerging markets in metros and Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

IHG Hotels and Resorts is planning to double its presence in India to 100 operating hotels over the next five years.

Hilton believes that 2024 is going to be its best year yet in India, according to India country head Zubin Saxena . With 26 operational hotels in India, the company is looking to double its portfolio in the next 3 to 4 years. It is also looking at an aggressive expansion in terms of the Indian markets where it operates, including emerging Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets.

Accor, in 2023, signed a record 11 hotels in India and opened six properties. The company plans to open nine hotels this year. However, CEO Sébastien Bazin believes that India is an untapped market , stating that the top five hotel operators in India collectively have less than 1,000 hotels.

Challenges For India

The McKinsey report studied the cities of Mumbai and Delhi to assess the potential risks that these destinations deal with in terms of tourism.

The report noted that while Mumbai has the lowest tourism density relative to its population in the cities it studied, visitors have been experiencing “long waits for entrance to attractions and a plethora of guides and vendors competing for attention.” Road traffic is also a major issue.

Mumbai is at a risk of an overloaded infrastructure due to tourism. This could lead to a negative impact on the visitor experience in a city where the local economy depends considerably on tourism.

On the other hand, Delhi is at a risk of having a negative visitor experience because of threat to its culture and heritage.

After Trump’s Conviction, a Wary World Waits for the Fallout

Already braced for uncertainty about the U.S. election, countries in Europe and Asia are now even more unclear about the future of American diplomacy.

  • Share full article

Mr. Trump, in a dark blue suit and bright blue tie, walks past metal police barricades with a group of other men.

By Hannah Beech and Paul Sonne

  • May 31, 2024

The world does not vote in American presidential elections. Nor do its jurors play a part in the American judicial system. Nevertheless, the conviction of Donald J. Trump on all 34 felony counts in a hush-money trial in a New York court on Thursday has again made clear how consequential what happens in the United States is for the rest of the planet.

Many America-watchers are grappling with the same questions posed by people in the United States: Can Mr. Trump still run for president? (Yes.) And if so, will the guilty verdicts cut into the support from his political base? (Unclear.)

Foreign observers also began wondering if Mr. Trump, already a volatile force, would become even less likely to stay within the guardrails of normal politics and diplomacy if he won the presidency again in November.

Mr. Trump’s supporters in anti-immigrant, right-wing nationalist circles abroad quickly jumped to his defense. Viktor Orban, Hungary’s Kremlin-friendly prime minister, called Mr. Trump “a man of honor” in a post on X and said the American people should deliver their own verdict in November.

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s deputy prime minister and the leader of the hard-right League party, expressed “solidarity and full support,” and called Mr. Trump a “victim of judicial harassment.”

“This verdict is a disgrace,” Nigel Farage, the pro-Brexit campaigner and Trump supporter, who is honorary president of Reform UK, a small right-wing party in Britain, wrote on social media. “Trump will now win big.”

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia did not immediately respond to the verdict but has seized on the situation more broadly to undermine American influence. Mr. Putin last year called the various proceedings against Mr. Trump political “ persecution ” and said they had revealed the “rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to teach others about democracy.”

His spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, reiterated the point on Friday in response to the verdict, saying it was clear to the entire world that the U.S. authorities were trying to eliminate political rivals “by all possible legal and illegal means.”

The convictions by a Manhattan jury come as the question of American engagement has become central in several global crises.

In Ukraine, the war effort against Russia has been stymied after Republicans in Congress delayed American military aid for months.

In Europe, leaders reliant on the United States for their defense are jittery about a return to a more acrimonious relationship with Washington and a possible withdrawal of American support for hardening defenses against Russia.

In Asia, where the Biden administration perceives a growing Chinese threat and worries about a possible invasion of Taiwan, American allies are concerned about the sanctity of defense treaties that have long girded the regional security order.

On the campaign trail, Mr. Trump has said he would encourage Russia to attack any NATO member that doesn’t pay sufficiently for its defense and has questioned whether the United States should defend South Korea, a treaty ally that hosts a large American military presence. He is considering the Ohio senator J.D. Vance, one of Washington’s most vociferous opponents of military aid for Ukraine, as a possible running mate.

Foreign analysts worry that Mr. Trump’s favored currency, unpredictability, could again shake up the global order.

Concern about his possible return to the White House is particularly palpable in Germany, the object of Mr. Trump’s ire for much of his first term and the host of more than 35,000 U.S. troops.

Andrea Römmele, vice president of the Hertie School, a public policy-focused graduate school in Berlin, said many Germans watching the Trump verdict were relieved to see that even a former president was not above the law in the United States. But she said Germans remained very anxious about a Trump victory.

“I think everyone is much more prepared to think the unthinkable,” she said.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland, whose right-wing domestic opponents accuse him of using the judiciary to settle political scores, hailed the conviction of Mr. Trump in New York as “an American lesson” for Polish politicians.

“The law determines guilt and punishment, regardless of whether the perpetrator is a president or a minister,” Mr. Tusk said in a message posted on X. A veteran centrist, Mr. Tusk took office after an October election that ousted a nationalist government that cultivated close ties with Mr. Trump during and after his time in the White House.

Still, on Friday, most foreign governments, forced to surf every shift in the American political mood, reacted cautiously.

“I would like to refrain from commenting on matters related to judicial procedures in other countries,” Yoshimasa Hayashi, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, said at a news conference in Tokyo on Friday.

In Britain, where a national election campaign is underway, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak refused to discuss the Trump case. His Labour Party opponent, Keir Starmer, a former top prosecutor, said he respected the court’s decision and called the situation unprecedented.

“Ultimately whether he is elected president will be a matter for the American people and obviously, if we’re privileged to come in to serve, we would work with whoever they choose as their president,” Mr. Starmer told BBC Radio Scotland.

Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for China’s foreign ministry, declined to comment on the verdict. She said she hoped whoever was elected president would “be committed to developing healthy and stable China-U. S. relations.”

The possibility of Mr. Trump’s return to the White House is a source of anxiety for U.S. allies in Asia that rely on Washington for their defense.

When Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan made a state visit to Washington in April, President Biden called relations between the countries the most important bilateral alliance in the world. With American concern rising over China’s expanding military footprint, Mr. Biden has strengthened American defense partnerships with Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and others in Asia.

By contrast, while president, Mr. Trump called for Japan, which hosts more than 50,000 American troops on its soil, to pay $8 billion for the upkeep of American bases there. (It never happened.)

Still, the fundamental tension in regional geopolitics — the contest between the United States and China — will continue no matter who wins the American presidential election.

“Beijing has no illusion about Trump or Biden, given their anti-China solid stance,” said Lau Siu-kai, an adviser to the Chinese government on Hong Kong policy. “Beijing is all set for a more intense confrontation with the U.S. over technology, trade and Taiwan.”

Officials in China’s embassy in the United States and its consulates around the country are most likely scrambling to assess how the verdict could affect the election, said Willy Lam, an analyst of Chinese politics at the Jamestown Foundation in Washington.

“The majority of Xi Jinping’s advisers now think a Trump presidency might be worse for U.S.-China relations,” Mr. Lam said of China’s top leader. “If Trump were to win, given the now peculiar circumstances of his victory, he might gravitate towards unpredictable actions to assert his authority.”

There is a sense in Asia that the region is perennially overlooked and underappreciated by U.S. presidents, particularly as crises in Europe and the Middle East have monopolized Mr. Biden’s attention. That sentiment was also felt acutely during Mr. Trump’s presidency, and for American partners in Asia it was made worse by his affinity for regional strongmen.

In addition to occasional expressions of admiration for Mr. Putin and Kim Jong-un of North Korea, Mr. Trump invited to the White House a former army chief who led a coup in Thailand and installed himself as prime minister. Mr. Trump drew accolades from Rodrigo Duterte, formerly the president of the Philippines and now under investigation by the International Criminal Court over his deadly war on drugs.

The Philippines is now led by the son of the longtime dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos, who died in exile in Hawaii. He has reoriented the country away from China back toward the United States.

In at least one regard — the prosecution of former leaders — the rest of the world is far ahead of the United States. South Korea, where four former presidents have been convicted of corruption and abuse of power, has made something of a national sport of imprisoning disgraced leaders. The former French presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and Jacques Chirac were convicted of corruption.

Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa, has been charged with money laundering, among other crimes. And Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was sentenced to years in prison for corruption after leading Brazil. His convictions were eventually annulled. He is again president of the country.

Reporting was contributed by Stephen Castle, Elisabetta Povoledo, Roger Cohen, Zixu Wang, Andrew Higgins, Camille Elemia , Choe Sang-Hun , Motoko Rich , Alexandra Stevenson , Sui-Lee Wee and Sameer Yasir .

An earlier version of this article misstated the length of Rodrigo Duterte’s term in office. It was six years, not eight years.

Perth Airport flights to resume after refuelling issue grounded planes, stranding thousands

A refuelling issue at Perth Airport which grounded domestic and international flights on Saturday morning has been resolved, the airport says.

At least 70 domestic and international flights were affected, with planes unable to land at the airport or depart.

Passengers were stranded at airports nationwide and at some international destinations, including Doha waiting to get to Perth.

A flight board shwoing cancelled flights.

Perth Airport said a problem with load pressure in the fuel lines had caused the issue, which had since been fixed.

Airport CEO Jason Waters said the system had now been repaired and tested.

Mr Waters apologised to impacted travellers and said the airport would be working with airlines to resume normal operations as soon as possible.

"The effects will be felt throughout today but we'd like to think that within a short period of time after that we'll get back to normal flights," he said.

"I'd like to think that by this evening and into tomorrow we'll have it dealt with but given we're talking about long haul flights and the extent of the backlog, it might take some time."

It's understood some flights had been delayed since Friday night, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

Passengers mill about an airport terminal, with one in the foreground siutting on the floor beside a pink suitcase.

The airport called in external experts, including engineers and technicians, to identify and repair the problem.

"As of just recently, I can inform you that we are back to normal refuelling and obviously very keen to see a return to normal operation," Mr Waters said.

"This has had a significant impact on flights overnight.

"From Perth airport's perspective we're very apologetic and sympathetic to impacted travellers.

"We're going to work very hard with our airlines here to ensure we get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

Mr Waters said the problem appeared to be the result of "air sucked into the distribution system".

No compensation for passengers, says Virgin

Virgin Airlines apologised to customers in a statement handed to passengers at Perth Airport, but said it was not required by law to provide compensation "for delays or cancellations outside of our control".

"We recommend you contact your travel insurance provider to assist you with any unforeseen expenses," the statement said.

Perth man Darshan Patel, who had had been planning to go to Hobart on Saturday for his wife's birthday until their flight was cancelled, said the airline's response was not good enough.

He wants compensation for his flights and other non-refundable bookings, such as accommodation.

Mid-shot of a family standing at Perth airport.

"We're really not happy because we've been planning for this holiday for quite a long time," Mr Patel said.

"Somebody is responsible for what is happening and there should be something done to help the passengers.

"We've booked everything well ahead, now it's getting cancelled. All our bookings are non-refundable.

"It's just passengers who are suffering."

Flights diverted to regional airports

At least four flights were diverted to regional airports including a Philippines Airlines flight from Manila to Perth that landed in Geraldton earlier on Saturday.

Geraldton is about 420 kilometres north of Perth.

A Phillipines Airlines plane parked on a runway viewed through a black steel fence.

A Geraldton Airport spokesperson said the small regional airport could only assist with a handful of flights due to having limited fuel supply themselves.

Passengers on the Philippines flight were not allowed to disembark and a biosecurity representative was on site.

City of Geraldton chief executive Ross McKim said Geraldton Airport was in danger of running out of fuel after the Philippines flight took a quarter of the airport's fuel capacity.

"The [airport's] refuelling isn't booked until mid-next week so we're going to have to work out how to get some up sooner than that," he said.

Qantas flight QFA10 from London to Perth was diverted to Karratha, in the state's far north.

Other flights were diverted to Kalgoorlie, about 600km east of Perth.

Passenger sat on plane for hours

Perth man Campbell Grieves and Swiss exchange student Zander Goosen arrived at the airport early to catch a flight to Sydney.

"We were taking (Zander) to see all the classic Aussie things in Sydney … the bridge, the Opera House," Mr Grieves said.

Two young men in a busy airport terminal smile at the camera.

"We get here at about 6am and we get on the plane, boarded alright, then we sat there in the little economy seat for two hours.

"The captain was ringing every in hour saying 'dunno where the fuel is,' eventually we get kicked off the plane and the flight is cancelled."

Mr Grieves said he had been told the earliest he and Mr Goosen could travel to Sydney was Monday.

A long queue of people stand in line with their luggage at Perth Airport.

Perth resident Stephen Herbert is stranded in Doha, where he was meant to stop briefly en route from London to Perth on Qatar Airlines.

" We have been in a line with other returning Aussies for nearly four hours," he said.

"No official from Qatar Airlines has given us any updates and we are relying on social media.

"[There are] lots of tired and disgruntled people wanting answers."

Crowds mill about a crowded airport terminal.

He was scathing of Perth Airport over the delays.

"There's no way you can call Perth an international airport after this debacle. Imagine if this happened at Heathrow?" he said.

Another passenger in Doha, Rae de Wet, told the ABC a delay of more than 24 hours was expected before they could get back to Perth, but little information had been provided.

She said she had already been in transit for more than 30 hours since leaving South Africa.

Perth airport board showing cancelled flights

"It is incomprehensible that an international airport could face an issue of this nature, embarrassing really especially on an international scale," she said.

At Sydney Airport, Perth man Steven Dipane said his son had been at a baseball tournament in Lismore and he was trying to head home.

"They're going to book us in to a room for the night, and then get us on a plane to Melbourne tomorrow and then to Perth.

"It just delays it. I would have liked to be home tonight."

Dieter Spurgeon's family is currently in Darwin after their flight home from a family holiday to Perth was delayed over 36 hours.

"We've contacted both Qantas and Perth airport and neither seem willing to reimburse us for an extra night's stay in Darwin," he said.

He said communication by both the airport and airline has been "horrendous".
