Safari: How to Get Search Bar Back to the Top & Disable Landscape Tab View

safari web browser's address bar doubles as the search bar

With iOS 15 Safari, the app has a whole new layout which brings many updates to the way you browse in the app. In Safari, the address bar is now located at the bottom of your iPhone screen, and in landscape orientation tabs will now appear in a list across the top. If you find these updates inconvenient and want to revert to the previous iOS 14 Safari layout, we'll show you how!

Move Address Bar to the Top of Safari

Remove the tab bar from safari landscape view.

Moving the search bar to the bottom of the screen has been one of the biggest changes to Safari in iOS 15. Luckily, if you don't like this change, you can switch it back! Safari now has two tab modes: Single Tab and Tab Bar. With Single Tab mode, your Apple address bar is displayed at the top of Safari and you must tap the tab icon to switch between tabs. With the Tab Bar mode, your URL address bar is displayed at the bottom, and you can swipe between open Safari tabs. Below, we'll cover how to get the URL bar back to the top of the page in Safari.

How to Move Address Bar to the Top in Safari (Shortcut)

Perhaps you find yourself accidentally swiping between tabs or you find it disorienting to have the URL bar at the bottom of your screen. Whatever your reason, this is the fastest way to switch into Single Tab mode and move the search bar to the top of Safari while browsing.

Now your Apple search bar will be displayed at the top of the screen. If you ever change your mind and want to revert back to the Tab Bar mode (being able to swipe between tabs is pretty handy!), follow the steps above and tap Show Bottom Tab Bar.

How to Place the Website Search Bar at the Top in Settings

This is a different method to adjust the same setting shown in the shortcut above. Below, we'll cover how to move your iPhone or iPad search bar to the top in Settings.

The landscape tab bar in Safari displays open tabs across the top of your screen and allows you to tap and switch between them, much the same way you would on your laptop. This is a handy update, as it means you no longer have to tap the Tab icon to switch tabs while browsing in landscape view. However, if you feel the landscape tab bar is crowding your screen and cramping your style, you can disable this feature:

Safari search bar has disappeared

The search bar on my Safari Browser has disappeared. Apple support helped me to switch to Tab Layout from Separate to compact. This works, but really prefer the Separate view. I did some research and went to customize the view and the search bar is dimmed out. When I switch to compact view it is not. I really need some help. I am at a loss.

Hello DRR84,

We see you have a question regarding Safari's search box, and we'd be happy to help out.

This page here helps to provide some assistance for getting Safari customized as desired:

Customize the Safari browser window on Mac

You may try using this to help drag the default set (which includes the address/search bar), back to the toolbar, if you're having issues with dragging just 'Address, Search, and Tabs'.

How to move the address bar back to the top in Safari

safari web browser's address bar doubles as the search bar

Of all the changes in iOS 15 one of the most noticeable, and potentially frustrating, is the changes to Safari and in particular the relocation of the address bar. If you are lost and confused by the change we show you how to return it to the top again.

In iOS 15 Safari on the iPhone feels like a completely new browser thanks to lots of new features including group tabs and scrolling between pages, but one of the most controversial is the migration of the address bar from the top to the bottom of the page.

During the development of iOS 15 testers complained about the change – to such an extent that adjustments were made. For example, during beta testing the address bar sometimes hovered over the content and sometimes was part of the window – Apple withdrew the latter option after particularly negative feedback. The company also made the decision to make it possible to return the browser to the used to be for those users really confused by the new set up.

How to get the old Safari back

Completely baffled by Apple’s new layout for Safari? You can return things to the way they were. Here’s what to do:

  • Open Settings.
  • Scroll to the Safari section and tap on that.
  • On the Safari settings page find the Tabs area. By default in iOS 15, the ‘Tab Bar’ setting is activated, which means the address bar will be at the bottom of the window.

Move URL Bar in Safari

  • If you want to go a step further and return to the way that Safari looked before iOS 15 you might want to turn off the ‘Allow colouring of web pages’ slider, then the appearance of tabs will no longer adapt to the content on the page itself.

Why you should give it a chance…

However, we would recommend giving the new function a chance. The main issues with the new layout while it was being beta tested have been addressed – the bar no longer bounces around the window like a hyperactive grasshopper, for example.

We find that operation with one hand is much more comfortable if the address bar is at the bottom as it can be reached with your thumb on any size screen.

Apple has not only renewed the Safari interface, but also revised the code in the background a little. As a result even older smartphones, such as on a first-generation iPhone SE, will find that the browser works a little faster on iOS 15 compared to iOS 14 as we found out in our speed comparison. How to Set Safari's Address Bar to the Top or Bottom of the Screen

During the beta phase of iOS 15, Apple added a new Safari design element that moves the URL and tab interface to the bottom of the screen, a decision that was immediately controversial with iPhone users.

iOs 15 Safari Feature

If you can't get on with the address bar living at the bottom of the screen and would prefer to have it in its original position at the top, like it was in iOS 14, follow these steps.

  • Launch Safari on your ‌iPhone‌.
  • Tap the " aA " icon in the left side of the address bar.
  • Tap Show Top Address Bar in the popup menu.

You can also control this design change in Settings -> Safari , under the "Tabs" section. To take the URL bar to the top of the Safari interface, select Single Tab .

How to move Safari Address Bar to top of screen in iOS 15

iOS 15 makes the Safari web browser easier to use by moving the Address Bar to the bottom of the screen when the iPhone is held vertically. But not everyone is ready for such a change, so Apple put in the option to move it back to the top.

Here’s how to flip the location.

iOS 15’s more reachable Address Bar

How to move the Safari Address Bar to the top of the screen in iOS 15

The Safari Address Bar at the bottom of the screen is less hassle to use. When holding your iPhone vertically and holding it one handed, buttons and text fields at the top of the screen are more difficult to reach because the display is so large.

But iPhone users have become accustomed to having the Address Bar at the top of the screen. And some people resist the change. So there were complaints after Safari was rearranged in early iOS 15 betas until Apple put in the option to undo the improvement.

How to restore the Safari Address Bar location

Flipping the Safari Address Bar in iOS 15 from bottom to top — or vice versa — is as easy as pressing a button.

  • Open the Settings app and scroll down to the Safari settings. Tap on it.
  • Then scroll down to the Tabs section where you’ll find the option to switch between a Tab Bar at the bottom of the screen or a Single Tab at the top.
  • Choose your option.

Safari in iOS 15 Address Bar Settings

Note that the buttons stay at the bottom of the screen in both options. It’s only the Address Bar that moves.

And keep in mind that this setting only affects the layout when the iPhone is held vertically. When held horizontally, the Address Bar and buttons stay at the top of the screen.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, how to regain a missing url address bar in safari for mac os x.

Missing Address Bar in Safari

The address bar in Safari shows you what website URL you are currently visiting, and it also doubles as a search bar in recent versions too. That makes it a fairly critical component of the Safari browser for many of us, so if you use Safari as your default web browser and find that it mysteriously has gone missing, it’s understandable if you’d be a bit annoyed.

It’s likely that if the address bar has disappeared that a setting was accidentally toggled or disabled, and thus it’s almost certainly easy to recover and reveal again if you find yourself in this situation.

The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure the Safari toolbar is set to be visible , because where URL’s and web addresses are displayed is part of the toolbar. Just pull down the “View” menu and select the first option, which if it’s hidden should be “Show Toolbar”.

Show the toolbar in Safari to regain a missing Address Bar

That should make the entire toolbar, with back & forward buttons, URL bar, sharing features, immediately reappear.

Address URL bar visible again in Safari for Mac OS X

If the toolbar is visible but the address bar is still missing, it means the toolbar was probably customized and the URL bar removed. That’s also an easy fix. Again, return to the “View” menu and choose “Customize Toolbar”, then drag and drop the default option into the toolbar to regain the lost address bar / smart search field and all other toolbar components.

This applies to the desktop versions of Safari in OS X, and the behavior of Safari on the Mac is different from Safari in iOS, which auto-hides the URL and navigation bar to conserve screen space. The Mac version does not do that, so if yours goes missing, it’s almost certainly the toggled setting situation described above. One thing that Safari for Mac does do though is shorten the URL in the toolbar, which must be changed if you want to see the full URL of a website via a settings option.

I’m very good with my mac. And I’m actually a little embarrassed that I had to follow this guide. I totally skipped over the “Show Toolbar”button in the “View” menu like 10 times… Thanks for your guidance. :)

This was so simple and it helped a lot! Thanks

Thanks so much! I am fairly knew to Apple and could not understand why my URL address bar and back arrow had disappearred. All I needed was to show toolbar.

thanks you very much <3

Thanks. Your article was simple to follow. Complete success.

Thanks, that was the most simple answer and the quickest solution to my dilemma, P.

I’m new to Mac OS X and thought i might have malware!

What a simple!! Thank you so much XD

I don’t know why the developers would think it’s a good idea to hide the address bar. Users should always be able to hide/turn features off but it’s nice to know where you are. I think most users can quickly eyeball a URL and know that’re on oxdaily or ESPN or whatever.

The tabs are so dark in iOS 8 that we can’t see the X to close the tab. It is really bad. Are there any adjustments to make it visible?

No they aren’t. The header is always white, or light gray, and you see the X to close that page (they don’t call them tabs in iOS).

You are probably in the Private mode. The X is hard to see in that mode

safari web browser's address bar doubles as the search bar

Address Bar

An address bar is a text field near the top of a Web browser window that displays the URL of the current webpage . The URL, or web address, reflects the address of the current page and automatically changes whenever you visit a new webpage. Therefore, you can always check the location of the webpage you are currently viewing with the browser's address bar.

While the URL in the address bar updates automatically when you visit a new page, you can also manually enter a web address. Therefore, if you know the URL of a website or specific page you want to visit, you can type the URL in the address bar and press Enter to open the location in your browser.

NOTE: The URL typically begins with " http:// ", but most browsers will automatically add the HTTP prefix to the beginning of the address if you don't type it in.

The appearance of the address bar varies slightly between browsers, but most browsers display a small 16x16 pixel icon directly to the left of the URL. This icon is called a "favicon" and provides a visual identifier for the current website. Some browsers also display an RSS feed button on the right side of the address bar when you visit a website that offers RSS feeds. In the Safari web browser, the address bar also doubles as a progress bar when pages are loading and includes a refresh button on the right side. Firefox includes a favorites icon on the right side of the address bar that lets you add or edit a bookmark for the current page.

The address bar is sometimes also called an "address field." However, it should not be confused with a browser toolbar , such as the Google or Yahoo! Toolbar. These toolbars typically appear underneath the address bar and may include a search field and several icons.

What Those Icons in Your Browser’s Address Bar Actually Mean

It’s not always easy to figure out what address bar icons mean.

Take a look at the address bar of the best internet browsers  and you’ll notice a number of icons in there. You might not have given them a whole lot of thought, but they can tell you a lot about the website that you’re on and what you can do with it—and as Google Chrome is changing one of those icons soon, it’s a good time to get up to speed on how all these little glyphs should be interpreted.

What does the padlock icon in your internet browser mean?

This is the one Google wants to change in Chrome. Traditionally, it indicates that a website uses HTTPS, the more secure version of the HTTP (or Hypertext Transfer Protocol) that’s the universally agreed way of delivering webpages. It means extra security and extra encryption.

The Best Laptops In 2023

The padlock is used to represent HTTPS universally across Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and other browsers, and in those browsers, you can also click on the icon to access more details about the site and more related options (to clear the cookies for the site, for example).

So why the change to an icon showing sliders? Google says the padlock is less needed now (95 percent of the web uses HTTPS), and that it can give users the idea that a site is trustworthy, which isn’t always the case: HTTPS indicates a secure connection, not a trustworthy website.

How to use the share icon in your internet browser

If you use Chrome, you’ll see a share icon in the address bar, an arrow pointing upwards out of a rectangle on the right (other browsers put their share options in the menus). Click on it to copy the current URL, send it to Chrome on another device, or cast its contents. You’re also able to generate a QR code for the website URL or save the page to disk.

How to use the install icon in your internet browser

This shows up in Chrome (a downward arrow in a monitor frame) and Edge (three squares with a plus symbol), when you’re on a page that has a Progressive Web App available—such as Twitter or YouTube. Basically, they’re websites that can run as if they’re native apps on your computer, launching in their own windows with their own shortcuts.

How to use the translate icon in your internet browser

You’ll see a translate icon—cards with an approximation of text on them—in the Chrome and Safari address bars (and on the Edge toolbar) when you’re on a website that’s primarily written in a language different to your own. Click on it to run a translation and access the translation options, which vary slightly depending on the browser you’re using.

Most browsers use a star-shaped icon for bookmarks.

How to use the bookmark icon in your internet browser

Chrome, Edge, and Firefox all let you bookmark the current website in the same way: By clicking on the star icon on the right-hand side of the address bar (you’ll notice it’s colored in if the site is already bookmarked). Click on the icon to save and configure the bookmark—you can choose what to call it and which folder to save it in, for example.

What do the two diamonds in your internet browser mean?

Sometimes, websites will want to be your default app for some particular job: Gmail wanting to handle emails by default on Windows or macOS is a good example. On these kinds of sites in Chrome and Edge, you’ll see a service handler icon (two diamond shapes close together)—click on the icon to grant the necessary permissions to the site you’re on.

How to use tab containers in Firefox

This is for Firefox only: The browser lets you organize tabs into specific color-coded containers (profiles, essentially), so you might have a bunch of tabs in a work container and a bunch of tabs in a personal container, for example. The container icon looks like three squares with a circle alongside them, and lets you open the current page in a container.

Click the shield icon in Safari for a privacy report.

What does the shield icon in your internet browser mean?

Both Firefox and Safari have shield icons to the left of the address bar. In Firefox, clicking the icon gives you access to the privacy settings (permissions and cookies) for the current site, while in Safari you get a privacy report on how many trackers the site is using. Similar options are available in Chrome and Edge, though through different icons or menus.

How to use the refresh icon in your internet browser

A handy refresh icon is essential for browsing the web, and in Safari it’s embedded right inside the address bar—so we’re including it here to be complete, even though you no doubt already know what it is. The same icon (an arrow in a circular shape) isn’t difficult to find in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, but it’s located on the toolbars of those browsers instead.

What does the cookie icon in Microsoft Edge mean?

All the major browsers have extensive options for managing cookies , but only Edge provides a dedicated icon inside the address bar. If you see it, it means that the storing of certain cookies (bits of tracking data) has been blocked by Microsoft’s browser and its current security settings—click on the icon to get more details on what’s been blocked.

What does the pop up blocked icon in your internet browser mean?

In Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, you have various controls to manage whether or not pop up windows are allowed, and on which sites. When such a pop up is prevented from appearing, you’ll see an icon (which actually looks like a blocked pop up) in the address bar—you can click on this to see what’s been blocked, and allow it to show up if needed.

How to use the read aloud icon in Microsoft Edge

There are a few more toolbar icons that are specific to certain browsers. In Microsoft Edge, we have the read aloud icon, which is designed like a capital A with a couple of squiggles next to it (representing, we think, speech). Click on it to have the page read out to you—a few controls will show up at the same time, letting you manage the audio playback.

What does the plus sign icon in Safari mean?

Safari users will notice a plus symbol icon appearing on the left of the address bar on certain pages, which ties into the browser’s reading list feature: Click on the icon and the page is instantly added to the list. To see all of the articles you need to find time to get around to reading, choose View and Show Sidebar (if it isn’t already visible in Safari).

How to use the reader mode icon in your internet browser

Both Safari (on the left) and Firefox and Edge (on the right) have reader mode icons that strip away a website’s distractions to leave just the article text for easier reading—the icon looks like one or two sheets of paper, and you just click it once to make the switch. There is a reader mode in Chrome, but at the moment it can only be accessed through a flag .
