Go back in time on Hamburg's Reeperbahn

St. Pauli once rivaled Pigalle in Paris as Europe's most notorious red light district. These days, it's littered with young men on stag nights and tourists looking in vain for its famous streets of shady repute.

A group of visitors mainly made up of middle-aged ladies with short hair and horn-rimmed glasses have signed up for the "Safari Special" tour led by insider "Der blonde Hans" - literally blond Hans. It's a 2 and a half-hour odyssey around the Reeperbahn - a street in Hamburg that was once described as "die sündigste Meile" or the most sinful mile. The female members of the group giggle as Hans talks, while the men look a little uncomfortable. His anecdotes are as racy as you'd expect from someone who's promised to provide "a glimpse of St. Pauli's long-lost past."

One man on his own turf

"Der blonde Hans" is now nearing 70 and not as blond as he was when he named himself after the popular German actor and singer Hans Albers. His real name is Hans Jürgen Schmitz, and these days he's a lot more respectable than he used to be. In the 1970s he was a pimp, a brothel-owner and, by his own admission, "a regular" at the Reeperbahn's infamous Davidwache police station. But he still has a twinkle in his eye and no shortage of stories to tell - including of a brunette beauty with bedroom eyes. "My word, she was a looker," he says. Domenica was her name, and she was once the most famous prostitute in Germany; and for a while, his girlfriend.

Hans is a man quick with a saucy joke or two and obviouslywell-qualified to show tourists around his neighborhood. But his metamorphosis into a pillar of society is symptomatic of the area's transformation. Later, over a beer, he admits he's not keen on how commercial it's become, sounding almost apologetic. What he wants is to show people the old St. Pauli, the real, grittier version. The St. Pauli of his youth before it became over-run with young men on stag nights and its peep shows were replaced by run-of-the-mill discos blasting out loud euro-pop.

Drawn to the seedy side

Hans' so-called "Nostalgia-Tour" is organized by local drag queen Olivia Jones. It costs around 30 euros ($33,5) and takes place five days a week. Hans isn't the only one giving guided tours of the Reeperbahn. Locals have been pimping their murky pasts for years now. There's little left of the underclass that madethe once-so-sleazy red light district so legendary. The sex industry has been replaced pretty much wholesale, by a tourist industry.

Today, Hans is with a group made of fifty-something female tourists who've come from Zürich, Pegnitz, Düsseldorf and Berlin to explore Hamburg's soft underbelly. Sporting a pair of aviator sunglasses, he gives them exactly what they want: colorful tales of vicious fighting between rival gangs with names like "Nutella" and "GmbH", whose members included the infamous ladies' man "schöne Michael" or "pretty Micky". "He'd make you weak at the knees," he assures his audience. His gags work, even if they seem rehearsed. "You'll go in as a man and come out a woman," he says outside a drag club. He's probably said it a million times by now.

Skid Row gentrified

Some of the other things he says are more heartfelt, "sadly, the Top Ten Club has gone, where the Beatles used to perform. So has Café Keese, it was taken over in 2013 by the very posh Gosch delicatessen and a lot of locals see that as a symbol of what's been lost," he laments. The "Molotow" music club is also long gone, while the landmark Esso development, with its legendary gas station, has been torn down. Few traces of the past are left. "Regrettably," says Der Blonde Hans. It’s his favorite word.

Back in the day, St. Pauli aspired to match the Pigalle in Paris, famous for its revue shows, cabarets and can-can dancers. Venues boasted exotic-sounding names such as "Colibri", "Salambo" and "Honolulu". In the "Hippodrom", guests paid girls to ride horses around the arena in time to a brass band. If they galloped - making their breasts jiggle - it cost 70 pfennigs more.

In its heyday, the Große Freiheit, a road which in English would be "the Great Freedom" just off the Reeperbahn, was home to 13 cabarets. Not a single one of them is left. Even thedoors have shut at the "Safari", Germany's last live sex theater.

Legends of the past

"Things have been going downhill fast in the last five years," says Andrea, a local streetwalker.She works on Herbertstraße, which runs parallel to the Reeperbahn and is famous for its sign declaring "Men only". She charges tourists 5 euros to answer their questions.

"How many customers have you had today?" asks one. "None!" she replies. "What about yesterday?"

"Also none."

These days, few punters wouldhead to Herbertstraße and the Reeperbahn. The area's obviously just too public.

But it's clinging to its past notoriety for dear life. The boxer's club "Zur Ritze" is located in a backyard with a pungent smell and is still seen as fairly authentic. But with its photographs and yellowing signatures framed on the wall, it also feels a bit like a museum. It likes to boast that Henry Maske and the Klitschko brothers once trained in the basement, where also the pimp and boxer Stefan Hentschel hung himself back in 2006. Another pimp was shot here.

Burlesque shelved for a supermarket

These days, the epicenter of St. Pauli is probably the Penny supermarket just around the corner. It has the highest sales in Hamburg and is open 24/7. Fresh fruit and vegetables don't exactly fly off the shelves, but booze and cigarettes certainly do. The clientele is made up mainly of oddballs and local heroes.

Hans begins giving the tourists his spiel about the "Allotria" theater that closed here in 1958 to be replaced a bit later by the "Bayrisch Zell", which had table telephones. A man lurking outside the supermarket starts in on him. "There he goes again," he slurs. "What's so special about telephones?" he demands to know.

St. Pauli's glory days obviously mean little to him. As he shepherds his group to the next landmark, Hans says nothing.

It used to be a dim red-light district for sailors, then in the 1960s and 1970s a springboard for musicians such as the Beatles, and at the same time a mile for furtive, undisguised sex tourism. Since the 1990s, Hamburg's most famous party mile has been transformed into a trendy district with a special flair. Bars and music clubs are located here next to art galleries, cabaret and theater houses, musical palaces and noble restaurants. A visit to the Reeperbahn.

The Reeperbahn is the hub of Hamburg nightlife in the St. Pauli district. It is 930 meters long, lined with nightclubs and bars, discos and pubs. Especially the side street Große Freiheit, the Hans-Albers-Platz as well as the Spielbudenplatz with Panopticon and Operetta House are popular with tourists and locals alike. On the corner of Spielbudenplatz and Davidstraße is also probably the most famous police station in Hamburg, the Davidwache. The building of Hamburg's police station 15 has become famous beyond Hamburg through film and television. Although the police station, with just under one square kilometer and about 14,000 inhabitants, is the smallest station in Europe, there is no question of boredom for the officers. Especially on weekends, there is a lot going on on the adjacent Reeperbahn. 

Herbertstraße runs parallel to the Reeperbahn, a brothel street closed to young people and women. But today, most visitors tend to stream past the red-light haunts into the trendy music clubs and restaurants, theaters and musical houses. Luminous lettering is flashing all around and the later the evening, the more crowded the streets and the more exuberant the people. Whether live bands or international DJs - the musical variety in the clubs is high. Legendary scene temples are and were  Golden Poodle Club and Mojo Club , the new Molotov and the Harbour Sound , Kaiserkeller and Great Freedom 36 , Prince bar and Moondoo . It's hard to imagine that the historic Reeperbahn was once a place of outcasts outside the city gates of Hamburg.

Living space for craftsmen, innkeepers and prostitutes

From 1618 to 1648, Germany was at war. In order to be able to defend themselves, numerous hills in the suburbs of Hamburg were leveled to have a clear field of fire. Areas such as Eimsbüttel, Rotherbaum, St. Georg and the Hamburger Berg, today's St. Pauli, were located outside the fortifications. Here, in the middle of the firing zone, only those who were undesirable in the city settled: innkeepers, prostitutes and undesirable institutions, such as the Pesthof, a hospital for epidemics and mental disorders. In the following years, craftsmen and businesses were also added, whose work required a lot of space, polluted the water, smelled strongly or made a lot of noise.  

From the year 1630 the reep beaters and rope makers also outsourced their work to Hamburger Berg. The old railroads at Eichholz, not far from today's landing bridges, had become too small over time. For an important basic requirement for their work were long lanes on which the ropes, up to 300 meters long, were made by hand. This activity gave the Altonaer Allee, which was laid out around 1820/30, its later name - Reeperbahn. The Seilerstraße, which runs parallel to the Reeperbahn, also bears witness to this period.

From the craft quarter to the entertainment mile

Besides craftsmen numerous amusement establishments also settled here in the 17th century. A Spielbudenplatz and a fair became established in the area. In the 18th century, the Hamburger Berg suburb became increasingly popular with city dwellers as an excursion destination. They especially enjoyed walking on and in front of the ramparts. Over the following years, the amusement district grew. There were attractions such as the camera obscura, snake charmers, animal tamers and ventriloquists. Numerous brothels were also opened. Dance halls and theaters with classicist stone facades were built. Popular were the Circus Gymnasticus, the Elysium or also the Urania Theater, founded in 1841 and still existing today.  St. Pauli Theater . It is not only the oldest private theater in the city, but also one of the oldest theaters in Germany. In 1879, the Panoptikum, a wax museum, opened its doors. To this day, many of these attractions have been preserved for the Kiez, as the neighborhood is fondly called today. 

Musical enthusiasts also get their money's worth on the Reeperbahn. Musicals from all over the world are regularly performed at the Operettenhaus. Great stage art can also be found in the three probably most famous theaters in St. Pauli: the 1988 opened  Schmidt Theater, the  Schmidts Tivoli which opened in 1991, and the youngest and smallest theater in the Schmidt family - the Klubhaus St. Pauli, which opened in 2015.  Schmidtchen . A perennial favorite is the play "Heiße Ecke," which was first staged at the Tivoli in 2003. In addition, Hamburg's most famous street is the setting in many films, including "Der letzte Lude" from 2003 and "St. Pauli Nacht" from 1998. The films "Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins" from 1954 and "Große Freiheit Nr. 7" from 1944 are among the classics of film history.

The Reeperbahn Festival

Every year at the end of September the clubs, bars and theaters in the neighborhood go one better for four days (if that's even possible). The  Reeperbahn Festival  is Europe's biggest club festival. There are more than 900 program points around the Reeperbahn. It is one of the most important meeting places in the music world, with more than 35,000 guests visiting the festival every year. There is even more to discover in over 70 large and small venues and on open-air stages.  

The best thing is to take a stroll through the Kiez yourself and get into the rhythm of the night, make your own discoveries in corner pubs, backyard temples and basement bars and get your own impression of this unique mile.

It’s a MUST for every visitor to drink a beer here and find out what role this pub played in the history of St. Pauli, and what importance it has today. The choice of name could not have been better. It dates back to a proviso from the 17th. Century, which granted the Altona residents commercial and religious freedom. The first live sex clubs such as the “Salambo” and the “Safari” were established here, businesses such as the Colibri, whose signs are still hanging as mementos today and the legendary Lady Lynn with its Asian dancers.

The street achieved worldwide fame above all through the Star Club, which existed from 1961 to 1969. The young Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Ramones, Fats Domino and other pioneers of Rock n Roll performed here and a memorial stone was placed here as a reminder of the wild times. Große Freiheit 36 is now the standard for this musical tradition. Top acts were there in the 90s, stars such as Björk, Deep Purple, Jamiroquai, Daft Punk, Marylin Manson, Smashing Pumpkins and the young Robbie Williams. For a touch of the quaint, the Gretel &Alfons bar can be recommended; it was also the favorite local of the Fab Four. The drag queen Olivia Jones and Große Freiheit are inseparable, she currently runs three shops in the street and established the first shop exclusively for male strippers so now women too can have some enjoyment.

However, the tastes of the visitors have also changed. There are very few peep and sex shows now and the number of brothels is falling. Erotic entertainment is now the in thing.

Their glasses are also raised to our guarantee of quality. There are no hidden costs. All our prices are transparent und fair. This is our contribution to ensuring that the reputation of the Reeperbahn will once again improve. The old “rip off“ that some businesses have run over recent years will never be part of our policy. Liebe Leserin, lieber Leser,

große Teile dieses Texts sind im Großen Saal der Elbphilharmonie entstanden, Block M, Reihe 3, Platz 11. Von dort aus habe ich gestern Abend die Premiere der Oper "Saint Francois d’Assise" von Olivier Messiaen verfolgt.  Ein Mammutwerk, aber dieses Wort klingt mir zu sehr nach Wagner, passender wäre: ein großes, sehr aufwendiges Spektakel, neulich haben sogar die "Tagesthemen" darüber berichtet. Es dauert fünf Stunden einschließlich zweier Pausen, eine davon habe ich genutzt, um rasch diese Zeilen hier vorzubereiten. 

Erzählt wird das Leben des heiligen Franz von Assisi, und es gibt – das lässt sich schon nach dem ersten Akt sagen – sicher Opern mit fesselnderer Handlung. Die Musik hingegen ist spektakulär, ein komplexes Bauwerk aus Farben, Harmonien und Rhythmen, die Wucht des Orchesters drückt das Publikum manchmal regelrecht in die Sitze.

Aber es ist keineswegs nur laut: Messiaen hat manche Passagen fast ausschließlich aus Vogelstimmen zusammengebaut. Und eine Verbindung zu Hamburg gibt es auch. Auftraggeber des Stücks war nämlich ein gewisser Rolf Liebermann, unter dessen Leitung die Staatsoper ein paar goldene Jahre hatte. Und Messiaens musikalischer Assistent bei der Uraufführung ist heute der Dirigent des Abends: Hamburgs Generalmusikdirektor Kent Nagano, der mit Freude bei der Arbeit ist.

So, es gongt, gleich geht es weiter.

Nur rasch ein Hinweis noch:  Kommenden Samstag, 8. Juni, findet auf dem Uni-Campus die Lange Nacht der ZEIT statt. Auf dem Programm steht unter anderem die Oper : Ein Gespräch mit Tobias Kratzer, dem künftigen Chef der Hamburgischen Staatsoper. Kratzer ist einer der besten und unterhaltsamsten Erzähler, die ich kenne. Wir sprechen darüber, warum Opern aus seiner Sicht Netflix-Serien voraushaben, was er mit der Staatsoper vorhat und wie man ein so komplexes 600-Mitarbeiter-Unternehmen überhaupt führen kann. Also jedenfalls will ich ihn das fragen (und noch einiges mehr), mal sehen, was er antwortet.

WAS HEUTE WICHTIG IST

Gestern war die Stadt mal wieder ein großer Sportplatz, mit Straßen, die stundenlang für den Verkehr gesperrt waren. Die Reeperbahn durfte zeitweise nicht mal von Fußgängern überquert werden. Grund war der Ironman-Wettbewerb, der 3,8 Kilometer Schwimmen, 178 Kilometer Radfahren und einen Marathonlauf umfasst. Sieger der Herren wurde bereits zu zweiten Mal Lars Wichert, er schaffte alle drei Disziplinen in 7:50:42 Stunden. Unter den Frauen gewann die Amerikanerin Jackie Hering, sie schaffte alle drei Disziplinen in 8:19:14 Stunden. Unser Foto zeigt die Drittplatzierte Daniela Bleymehl (8:28:09).

Nur 1.800 Menschen zählte die Polizei am Freitag bei einer Klimademo anlässlich der kommenden Bezirks- und Europawahlen. Die Veranstalterinnen und Veranstalter von Fridays for Future sprachen von 4.700 Demonstrierenden, hatten aber ursprünglich mit rund 15.000 gerechnet. Ein Grund für die geringe Teilnahme ist wohl das schlechte Wetter mit teils strömendem Regen. Auch eine Demo der Gruppe "Bildungswende jetzt", die unter anderem eine massive Erhöhung der Bildungsausgaben fordert, blieb deutlich hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Hier kamen am Sonnabend nach Polizeiangaben etwa 300 Menschen auf den Gänsemarkt.

Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) will 39 Millionen Euro in die Wissenschaft in Hamburg stecken. Großer Gewinner ist das Universitätsklinikum Eppendorf. Hier entsteht ein neuer Sonderforschungsbereich unter der Leitung von Marylyn Addo, der sich Viren, Infektionsprozessen und Immunreaktionen auf molekularer Ebene widmen wird. Unipräsident Hauke Heekeren sprach von einem "gute Signal für den Wissenschaftsstandort Hamburg". Die DFG ist eine bundesweite Einrichtung, ihre Aufgabe ist unter anderem die Förderung der Spitzenforschung.

Nachricht des Tages

"Menschenrechte" und "Menschenwürde" waren die zentralen Begriffe, als gestern der Publizist Michel Friedman mit Kultursenator Carsten Brosda (SPD) diskutierte. "Gefährdet Hass unsere Demokratie?", lautete der Titel der Matinee im St. Pauli Theater.

Auf die Frage von Moderatorin Susanne Beyer, was er beim Anblick des Sylt-Videos empfinde, sagte Friedman, der als staatenloser Jude und Sohn von Schoah-Überlebenden aufgewachsen ist: "Traurigkeit." Er sehe da Menschen, die offenbar "so gelangweilt und dekadent" seien, dass sie "mit einer unglaublichen Leichtigkeit andere Menschen verachten", womöglich ohne es überhaupt zu bemerken. Der Hass einiger weniger treffe auf ein Klima der breiten Gleichgültigkeit gegenüber demokratischen Werten, und diese Gleichgültigkeit sei das größere Problem. Er halte es etwa für "unstreitig", dass Björn Höcke ein Nazi sei, sagte Friedman. Aber: "Auch jemand, der sagt, was Herr Höcke sagt, darf nicht geschlagen werden in meinem Land."

Die Diskussion war Teil des Hamburger Theater Festivals, das auch eine szenische Lesung von Friedmans Memoiren "Fremd" durch die Schauspielerin Sibel Kekilli zeigte, ein Gastspiel des Berliner Ensembles, das mit reduzierten Mitteln auf die Wucht des Textes vertraut. Samstagabend gab es dafür minutenlang Applaus. Noch bis Ende Juni sind im Rahmen des Festivals weitere Gastspiele in Hamburg zu sehen .

Im Slalom durch das Chaos

Paris ist ein Paradies für Radfahrer – sagen die Hamburger. Ob das stimmt? Annika Lasarzik hat es getestet und ist skeptisch. Lesen Sie hier einen Auszug aus ihrem Artikel.

Als es hinter mir klingelt, kann ich gerade noch zur Seite springen. Ein Schatten rast vorbei. "Allez!" – "Weg da!", ruft der Radfahrer. Ich gerate ins Wanken, sehe mich mit meinem Zehn-Kilo-Rucksack schon wie ein Käfer auf dem Boden liegen. Erst jetzt erkenne ich, dass ich gerade auf den Radweg gelatscht bin. Ein grüner Streifen neben dem Bürgersteig, mit einem weißen Fahrrad-Symbol bemalt. Wie konnte ich den übersehen?

Vielleicht weil die Vorstellung, in Paris Rad zu fahren, mir so bizarr vorkommt. Obwohl ich glaubte, die Stadt gut zu kennen.

Ein Freitagabend im Mai, vor zehn Minuten bin ich am Bahnhof Gare du Nord ausgestiegen und laufe den Boulevard de Magenta entlang, der nach Montmartre führt. Diesen Weg bin ich oft gegangen – damals, vor bald 16 Jahren. Nach der Schule habe ich ein Jahr als Au-pair in Paris gelebt. Die Sandsteinfassaden, die Eckcafés mit den roten Markisen, der süßlich-muffige Geruch der Metro: All das wirkt gleich vertraut. Doch statt in Erinnerungen zu schwelgen, sollte ich jetzt lieber auf den Verkehr achten. Denn der ist anders als damals. Sehr anders.

Wo einst nur Autos über den Asphalt donnerten, schlängeln sich heute Radfahrer und E-Scooter durch die Straßen. Die Bürgermeisterin Anne Hidalgo, Mitglied bei der Partei der Sozialisten (PS) und seit 2014 im Amt, will Paris bis 2026 "zur hundertprozentigen Fahrradstadt machen". Dafür lässt sie Autospuren zurückbauen und Tausende Parkplätze in Grünflächen umwandeln. In zehn Jahren entstanden in Paris knapp 800 Kilometer neue Radwege für über 150 Millionen Euro. 100 Millionen Euro an weiteren Investitionen sollen folgen.

Der Hamburger Anwalt Kurt Groenewold hat einige prominente Angeklagte vor Gericht vertreten. Etwa Konrad Kujau, den Fälscher der vermeintlichen Hitler-Tagebücher, die Anfang der Achtzigerjahre in der Zeitschrift "stern" abgedruckt wurden. Bekannt ist Groenewold aber vor allem als Strafverteidiger von 68ern und der Terroristinnen und Terroristen der Roten Armee Fraktion. Heute ist er 87 Jahre alt, führt immer noch seine Kanzlei in Eimsbüttel – und spricht mit der Journalistin Eva Sudholt über sein Leben und sein Berufsverständnis.

Dann meldet sich der Zugführer. "Ich bitte um Ihre Aufmerksamkeit. Entschuldigt sind nur diejenigen mit den Kopfhörern auf den Ohren. Alle aussteigen heißt: wirklich alle aussteigen. Dieser Zug wird ausgegliedert. Wer sitzen bleibt, wird acht Stunden an einem dunklen, feuchten, nicht so angenehmen Ort verbringen, inklusive Krabbeltieren. Glauben Sie mir, da wollen Sie nicht sein.
