Braemar BD 2018 sea cruise

A city on a human scale, Rouen is an intimate port of call and the disembarkation of passengers is meticulously organized to optimize their time there. Rouen is therefore a pleasant stopover as much for cruise passengers as for passengers who are warmly expected and welcomed by the locals.

A stopover in Rouen

Cruise to Rouen in search of the most beautiful scenery in the Seine Valley, discovering Norman culture and the city’s outstanding heritage . The cruise is an excellent option to discover the wonders of Rouen and its surroundings: the green Norman countryside, the Seine and the scenery that inspired the Impressionist painters, fascinating historical sites such as Rouen Cathedral, the Joan of Arc Historial and many architectural treasures. A stopover in Rouen is an opportunity to savor French and Norman cuisine accompanied by succulent wines from the French terroir during an unforgettable gastronomic stop for your taste buds. The cruise terminal

The Rouen cruise terminal is located on the right bank of the Seine, close to the city’s historic center. The terminal is fully equipped to accommodate a variety of river and sea cruise ships , from small vessels to large luxury liners.

The terminal has a modern reception area as well as all the services to welcome passengers during their port call: restrooms, a café, a souvenir store and a tourist information office.

The terminal offers multiple technical facilities to meet the needs of cruise ships. These facilities include a dedicated 250-meter-long berth, as well as mooring and anchorage areas for larger vessels.

This terminal also offers a range of technical services to cruise operators, including fresh water supply, electrical connections and waste collection services. It also includes a border reception center equipped with an immigration station and a customs clearance area to facilitate passenger entry and exit.

Rouen destination cruises

Historical capital of Normandy, the medieval city of Rouen constitutes the closest port to the city of Paris, located 135 km away. The Rouen Port Authority ( HAROPA ) includes the city of Rouen, the entire Seine Valley as well as Honfleur, thus facilitating the organization and billing of calls: the ship stays in the same area and is only billed once.

The Port of Rouen’s cruise terminal can accommodate ships up to 250 meters long on two berths, open 24 hours a day. Many itineraries offer overnight stops to give passengers more time on site to enjoy all the riches of the city of Rouen and take advantage of unforgettable excursions in Normandy and beyond, such as visits to Giverny, Paris and Versailles.

Viking Fjorgyn Seine / Normandy River Cruise, a Fabulous Adventure

Paris, the City of Light, entices with its lively Joie de vie, remarkable architecture, art, fashion, food, and history. Imagine strolling the banks of the Seine, exploring the world-class museums, or sipping coffee at a sidewalk café.

The Viking Seine/Normandy River Cruise starts and ends in Paris but makes noteworthy stops in picturesque Normandy. Guided excursions include Rouen, the capital of Normandy, the port city of Honfleur, immersion into Impressionist art, a day devoted to WWII history and the D-Day landing sites, and picturesque small rural villages.

rouen river cruise

Before my departure, Viking sent me a helpful packet of travel documents that answered all my questions. They provided emergency contact numbers just in case.

Like most Americans, I arrived in Paris via an overnight flight. After clearing baggage claim, I saw a woman holding a Viking Cruises sign. That was reassuring because I knew she would take care of my transportation needs. However, I hoped to meet up with my daughter-in-law, Amy, arriving about the same time but on a different flight. No worries; the Viking staff and the van driver found Amy and then joined me along with two other passengers. Soon afterward, we left the airport and headed toward the cruise ship.

Our cabins were naturally not ready when we arrived dockside (still before 10 am). But we were warmly welcomed onboard, and our luggage was stowed. Staff led us to the dining room, and we revived ourselves with tasty breakfast items from the buffet.

Despite the lack of sleep, Amy was ready for her first Parisian adventure, and I was excited to join her. We postponed exploring the ship and set foot toward the Eiffel Tower. (The Viking dock is close enough to make the walk.)

The iconic 1083-foot steel tower, constructed for the 1898 World’s Fair, stands as a beloved landmark. Visitors take the elevators up and gaze down upon the sprawling city. They take many photos and stroll around the adjoining field called the Champs du Mars and the surrounding gardens. Amy and I did all that, but I was dragging on the walk back to the Viking ship.

The Viking Fjorgyn

Fortunately, the Viking crew welcomed us again, and this time, they escorted us to our cabin on the upper level. We found the room with two single beds, floor-to-ceiling windows that slide open, and a small balcony with two chairs and a bistro table. The closet was big enough for us both, and we could stash our luggage under the beds.

Expect a small but functional bathroom. When not taking a shower, the doors open inward, providing more space, or at least it feels that way. Heated flooring adds an oh-so-nice touch when getting out of the shower.

The ship’s upper level includes the Aquavit Lounge with full-length windows and a popular, well-stocked bar. Outside the lounge, an espresso and cappuccino-making machine remain open 24/7 for self-service. Elves seem to replenish the complimentary pastries frequently.

The Viking Fjorgyn appeared new as it was built in 2020 specifically for the Seine River (and not used during the pandemic). The Scandinavian interior design feels sleek. She carries a maximum of 168 passengers in 84 outside staterooms (22 Standard Staterooms, 18 French Balcony Staterooms, 35 Veranda Staterooms, 7 Veranda Suites, and 2 Explorer Suites). The ship measures 410 feet in length and maintains a crew of 46. River cruise boats carry far fewer passengers than mega ocean liners. The limited number of guests quickly become friends as they gather at meals and on excursions.

There is no spa on this boat, as most Viking guests are more interested in the historical and cultural excursions. Viking provides pre-excursion information and excellent guides. Guests leave the cruise having experienced and learned much about France. Yet, they are pampered and catered to by the staff. The combination is ideal.

If you are wondering, Viking names their longships (river cruisers) after Norse sagas. Fjorgyn is the Norse Goddess of the Earth. In Norse mythology, Mother Earth, Fjorgyn has been associated with the start of the growing season. She was the mother of Thor, the mighty thunder god, and the son of Odin.

After nibbling on a late lunch, we took a few moments to unpack and settle. One of the significant advantages of cruising is not having to transfer luggage and constantly pack and unpack.

Everyone was called to their Muster Stations for a practice drill with life preservers. The Seine is not wide, and I suspect one could swim to either side without difficulty. However, Viking is wise to practice safety measures.

Afterward, all aboard sipped a champagne cocktail to officially start the cruise, followed by a relaxing, multi-course meal. The main restaurant rests on the mid-deck, below our cabin. Picture windows line the dining room, giving guests an almost 360-degree view. The central area stays ready for breakfast and lunch buffets.

Viking’s policy is open seating, so they don’t assign tables. Each meal offers a choice of daily selections and always includes the option for popular favorites, like Eggs Benedict, hamburgers, and steak or salmon. Wine and beer are complimentary at meals, and those with the Silver Spirits package may choose higher-priced drinks and wine anytime.

Itinerary and Shore Excursions

Paris- Day 2

A panoramic city tour of Paris began after breakfast. We, cruisers, boarded a bus and listened to a guide describe the famous sites as we passed. We stopped near Notre Dame to see the restoration work progressing on the cathedral. Our guide gave us free time to explore, shop, or grab a coffee in a nearby café.

The tour also included a stop for photos at the Eiffel Tower before returning to the ship for lunch. In the afternoon, Amy chose an excursion to Montmartre and Sacre Coeur, and I went on a Flavors of Paris outing, a delicious foodie tour. Others opted for the full-day excursion: Scenic Paris and Highlights of the Louvre.

That evening the glittering Eiffel Tower in the distance took center stage. It’s a pinch-me moment to see the illuminated icon sparkling like fireworks. Simply stunning.

La Roche- Guyon and Vernon – Day 3

The Fjorgyn sailed during the night; we reached La Roche-Guyon the following morning. An ancient castle and chateau hover on white chalk hills dominating a tiny village (population approximately 500).

Our cruise director, Mimi, led us on a walking tour through the gardens toward Chateau de La Roche-Guyon. The fortified keep, which overlooks the valley, is linked to the château via a mysterious stairway dug into the rock. The Château was built in the 12th century and featured a combination of medieval, Renaissance, and classical styles, including a formal kitchen garden. Various owners added rooms to the chateau over hundreds of years.

We climbed many stairs within the chateau, taking in panoramic autumnal views. Amy climbed the dark, secret stairway to the top of the keep.

Some travel lists include La Roche-Guyon as one of France’s “Most Beautiful Villages,” and I tend to agree. I appreciated the opportunity to explore it.

The captain moved our boat to nearby Vernon, and most guests took an afternoon excursion that included a drive-by glimpse of Monet’s House and Garden named Giverny. His colorful home was closed for the season, so we went to Auvers-Sur-Oise. Auvers is where Vincent Van Gogh lived his last few months in 1890. The location gave him such a source of creative inspiration he completed 80 paintings in seventy days.

A guide led us through the little town that seemed like a nineteenth-century time capsule. We strolled cobblestone pathways past shuttered homes, flower boxes, greenery, and shops. We paused at the Eglise Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, the church painted by Van Gogh. I loved comparing the Gothic building to the well-known painting.

We continued up a hill to the cemetery with the graves of Vincent and his brother Theo. The graveyard lies across from the fields that inspired another van Gogh masterpiece, The Wheatfield and Crows.

We ended the visit at Auberge Ravoux, the artist’s final home. Only two or three at a time could enter his tiny rented attic bedroom. It seemed to be filled with sadness. Afterward, the group watched an excellent video/slideshow of his art from the area.

Back onboard, the day ended with a special dinner: The Taste of France, the only buffet dinner on the cruise. The vast selection of delicious cheeses, entrees, and desserts overwhelmed me. I turned in with a full stomach and fond memories of two lovely small villages packed with history and art, plus too much fine food.

Rouen and Surroundings – Day 4

Rouen, the largest city in Normandy, offers one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. The intricate designs on the exterior look like lace. Guided walking tours of the city speak of the town’s long history and Joan of Arc. Joan was burned at the stake in Rouen after her trial. A modern church stands on the site, the interior aglow with a beautiful wall of stained glass windows.

Amy took the afternoon excursion to Honfleur, a medieval port village with narrow cobblestone alleys and a central rectangular harbor in the middle. Unfortunately, it was raining the entire time, so she did not get the photos she had hoped.

I ventured past the bucolic countryside to a rustic old farm. Once there, I watched a trained sheepherding dog corral and move the animals about the field. This behavior was fascinating and fun.

Normandy is known for apples, apple cider, and the liqueur Calvados. My tour group strolled through the property’s apple orchard and cidery/distillery. We entered the tasting room to learn all about cider. To the French, cider means an alcoholic drink, whereas a non-alcoholic choice is apple juice. Calvados is stronger than cider.

D- Day- Day 5

The  D-Day landing sites are a significant draw to the region, and Viking offers two full-day excursions. The tour aimed at Americans visits the Caen Memorial Museum and includes a documentary film. Our guide was a professor of history, so he gave us definitive information on the events during WWII.

We drove on to the  172-acre American Cemetery, with 9,387 American graves. The peaceful cemetery with white crosses stretches as far as the eye can see. It honors the Americans lost in the Normandy battles. It’s an emotionally difficult place to visit, but one that keeps alive the memory of those who fought bravely to defend global freedom. We owe them much.

Viking arranges a special ceremony at “The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves” statue. The playing of the Star Spangled Banner, followed by Taps, brought tears to almost everyone’s eyes. It was a very moving tribute and made me a proud American. We learned that the average age of the soldiers buried in the cemetery ranged from 19-22 years.

The tour moved on to Omaha Beach, another U.S. landing site. The long sandy expanse sat empty on this cold and dreary November day. A stunning memorial stands on the beach, honoring the critical events along this waterfront in 1944. Another monument memorializes the event in the open town square.

A second Viking day tour began with a stop at the famous Bayeux Tapestry, something I would have loved to see. It continues to Gold Beach and Arromanches,  British and Canadian battle sites, Juno Beach, and the British cemetery in Ranville.

Les Andelys – Day 6

While the ship sailed in the morning, many attended a lighthearted cooking class from the chef and his assistant. They prepared a Tarte au Citron or Lemon Tart with ease. We received copies of the recipe; I will try replicating it at home.

The day was warm enough to sit outside on the Aquavit Terrace at lunchtime. Fortunately, we finished our meal before the rain started. As the boat approached the village of Les Andelys, we saw the fortress called Chateau Galliard. The buildings are ruins of Richard the Lionhearted castle, built between 1196-1198.

The group tour began in the rain, but as we climbed up the hill, a somewhat challenging walk, a rainbow appeared. We explored the ruins with superb panoramic views. When ready, we strolled downhill into the charming town with half-timbered buildings. There, some of us lingered for shopping.

After dinner, most of the guests participated in a fun game in the lounge. Cruise Director Mimi explained that we’d know the answers but had to pick the most likely response. The lively game ended with a party, music, and dancing. FYI: Don’t expect much professional entertainment on this cruise; most guests retire after dinner.

Paris Surroundings- Day 7

Our last full day began in La Pecq with a morning trip to Chateau de Malmaison, the magnificent home of Josephine and Napoleon. The house sits on the outskirts of France, but most tourists miss it (being too far for a taxi, and no direct bus route). Thanks to Viking, we were dropped off at the gate.

The excursion included a fascinating discussion on Josephine’s life, home, and gardens. Big surprise – this home was also where the Louisiana Purchase was laid out and signed. I am so glad I could visit this fascinating site. I now have the desire to learn more about Josephine.

After lunch, many chose to visit the Palace of Versailles, the flamboyant, over-the-top estate of Louis XIV, the Sun King. The extravagance in his estate makes you understand why the French Revolution occurred. While Louis XIV ruled competently during his long life, he spared no expense on himself,  and later Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette took the extreme lifestyle over the edge.

Tip: The Palace is worth seeing, but always crowded. The King’s bed chambers, the Chapel, and the Hall of Mirrors do not disappoint, except for the hordes of tourists. The gardens spread over 2,000 acres (you will walk miles), but unfortunately, this cruise was in November, and the greenery could have been better (and we needed more time). If you plan to visit Versailles, arrange to go when the fountains are working. You won’t be disappointed. Otherwise, expect crowds and more gold leaf than you’ve ever seen!

Sadly, we neared the end of our time together. The boat moved while we were at Versailles, so the bus returned us to the dock in Paris. Guests, now friends, lingered over a lovely last dinner and prepared to travel home.

Disembarkment- Day 8

Viking distributed color-coordinated luggage tags to get everyone’s luggage to the right spot. They also assigned us to one of the frequent buses or vans leaving for the airport. The staff rechecked our luggage and loaded it into the vehicle.

Of course, some passengers chose to stay in Paris, and I wished I’d made that choice. But off to the airport I went, Viking staff staying with all until we were in the correct airplane check-in line. Au revoir.

I cherish memories of this fabulous cruise with my daughter-in-law and our adventures in France. If you are considering the Viking Seine cruise, go!

A comfortable sun lounger awaits on deck to watch the world go by, or chat over a cup of tea in the lounge whilst the river vistas silently drift past the panoramic windows.

During tonight’s dinner, we arrive in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine where we moor overnight. After dinner, retire to the lounge to enjoy a local performer entertaining us with the French and international chansons in a tribute to Edith Piaf.

Eiffel Tower, Paris

AUVERS-SUR-OISE

Auvers-sur-Oise

This morning we drive through the sleepy bocage countryside, a green landscape of lush pastures and high hedgerows to the captivating village of Auvers-sur-Oise, which has welcomed and inspired a host of famous artists through the centuries. Cezanne, Pissarro and most notably Vincent Van Gogh, who famously shot himself and was buried here in 1890, all drew inspiration from this picturesque spot with Van Gogh describing the little town as ‘seriously beautiful’. During a guided tour with a local expert, visit the elegant Château d'Auvers, an historic Louis XIII-style building, with all the style and ambience associated with 19th-century Impressionism where you can immerse yourself in the history of this world-renowned period. After a tour of its splendid interior, stroll the blissful gardens, admiring the perfumed blooms, manicured hedges and cooling fountains.

Cruise towards Rouen

We return to the ship for lunch and set sail towards our next stop, so relax and enjoy the facilities on board. Seek out a sun lounger up on deck to while away the afternoon with some holiday reading as we sail through the enchanting Normandy landscape, awash with fragrant cider orchards, half-timbered barns and characterful wooden farmhouses. Reconvene in the bar for an aperitif before the chef presents tonight’s excellent menu.

Included experience:

Guided tour of Auver-sur-Oise.

Church Notre-Dame de l'Assomption - Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Awake in Rouen, Normandy’s capital, one of Europe’s finest medieval cities and scene of many momentous events over the centuries. After breakfast we disembark to uncover the treasures of this fascinating city through the insightful eyes of our local guide. The jewel in Rouen’s crown is its stunning Gothic cathedral, which was immortalised by another of the great Impressionists, Claude Monet in a series of twenty-eight paintings depicting its impressive façade at varying times of day and in different seasons. Briefly becoming the world’s tallest building when its soaring spire was added during the 19th century, the cathedral is also notable for the tomb containing the heart of Richard the Lionheart.

You’ll find Rouen’s network of tangled alleys a treat to explore, lined with antique shops, smart boutiques and of course, a host of exceptional restaurants from which drifts the delicious aromas of this region’s gastronomic heritage. The Place du Vieux-Marché is one of the city’s most poignant spots; a large cross indicates where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for her beliefs.

Cruise towards Le Havre

After lunch, we continue our cruise along the Seine’s magnificent course, passing chalk cliffs and a landscape of forest-covered hills that are designated areas of outstanding natural beauty and sanctuaries for diverse wildlife, including deer and wild boar. Another highlight of the valley soon greets us – the ethereal ruins of Jumiéges Abbey – which we rediscover later in the cruise.

After dinner, retire to the laid-back ambience of the bar for a digestif as we sail overnight to Le Havre.

Guided tour of Rouen.

ARROWMANCHES & D-DAY BEACHES

Arromanches & D-Day beaches

This morning we are in Le Havre, and after breakfast we disembark for a full day visit to the D-Day Normandy Beaches. We visit the British Cemetery in Ranville followed by the Pegasus Bridge Memorial, made famous in the film The Longest Day. Ranville was the first French village to be liberated after the British 6th Airborne Division captured the bridge, preventing a German counter-attack during the weeks that followed the Normandy Invasion. We stop to pay our respects at the Canadian War Cemetery at Beny-sur-Mer then continue to Courseulles for lunch at leisure. Later we visit the Juno Beach Centre, situated immediately behind the beach codenamed Juno, the section of the Allied beachhead on which 14,000 Canadian troops landed on D-Day; the museum pays homage to the 45,000 Canadians killed during the war.

The day concludes with a scenic drive along the Landing Beaches to Arromanches-les-Bains. This has the best viewing point to Gold Beach, one of the five main landing sites on D-Day, when Allied forces surged into Normandy to begin the liberation of occupied Europe. Casting your eyes across the sand to the water’s edge, it’s sobering to consider that on 6 June 1944 around 25,000 British troops came ashore on this one beach, with 400 killed by the defenders.

After a truly poignant and memorable day, we return to the ship for another excellent dinner, before a talented musician and singer will take us on a journey through the repertoire of French classics.

We’ll remain moored in Le Havre overnight.

Visit to Arromanches and the D-Day Normandy Beaches & French chanson evening on board.

HONFLEUR OR ÉTRETAT

Honfleur or Étretat

This morning, you can choose to visit the charming town of Honfleur or discover the natural coastal beauty surrounding Étretat which has inspired many painters and writers.

Honfleur is often regarded as the most picturesque spot on the northern French coast, and it’s a short drive to this captivating town. Its old harbour, sheltering both fishing boats and luxurious pleasure craft, is beautifully preserved and surrounded by a waterfront of pastel-coloured 16th to 18th-century houses, many converted into seafood restaurants which waft delicious aromas onto the quayside. Watch talented artists capturing the views along the waterfront, while the intricate maze of streets nestling behind invites exploration. Honfleur’s most famous son is Eugene Boudin, one of the forerunners of Impressionism and a friend of Claude Monet, who depicted Honfleur’s harbour in many of his works.

Alternatively, join our visit to the pretty seaside town of Étretat to discover the region’s legendary coastal views. Enjoy sweeping views of dramatic white cliffs, eroded away over the centuries to create unusual rock formations – again the subject of many an Impressionist’s canvas. Most famous is the aiguille, a sharp pinnacle protruding from the depths and the striking Aval Arch, famously immortalised by Monet and Boudin. Explore Étretat’s lattice of little streets, with quaint tucked away shops and restaurants and an unusual wooden covered market or take a walk up to the town’s Asian-inspired gardens, which afford stunning views of the cliffs and town. Perhaps visit the half-timbered 19th-century villa Le Clos Lupin, the former home of the French children’s writer, Maurice Leblanc, now an interesting museum celebrating his life and work.

Cruise towards Caudebec-en-Caux

We return to the ship for lunch and this afternoon there’s another opportunity to relax on board. Soak up the views as we sail through a lush landscape of verdant pastures and thickly forested slopes. During tonight’s superb dinner we arrive and moor in charming Caudebec-en-Caux.

Visit to Honfleur or Étretat.

Honfleur Harbour, Normandy

ABBEY JUMIÈGES & ABBEY SAINT-WANDRILLE

Caudebec-en-Caux or Abbey Jumièges & Abbey Saint-Wandrille

You might choose to spend the morning exploring Caudebec-en-Caux, and its astounding cathedral, a 15th-century gothic masterpiece. Admire its intricate external decoration and beautifully carved stonework, then step inside to marvel at the superb medieval stained glass, statues and impressive 16th-century organ. Look out for the unusual Maison de Templiers, one of the oldest houses in Normandy thought to date from the 12th century with arched windows and attractive gothic façade, the 14th-century former town prison and two historic towers, remnants of Caudebec’s defenses. Or simply enjoy a peaceful stroll along the riverbank, admiring the houses and pretty gardens soaking up this tranquil scene.

Alternatively join our visit firstly to the majestic Abbey Jumièges, one of the loveliest ruins in France and a fine example of Norman Romanesque architecture. With a history dating back to 654, the original buildings were ransacked by the Viking invasions, but the abbey was rebuilt and by the mid-13th century had gained enormous influence in religious practice and learning. It prospered until the 17th century, but its final demise came with the French Revolution when it was forced to close along with all other religious institutions, sold in 1791 and became a stone quarry. Fortunately, by the 19th century, it became an icon of the Romantic Movement which prevented further destruction of the site. Today, you cannot fail to be impressed by the scale of these beautiful ruins set in acres of peaceful grounds. We continue to the working Abbey Saint-Wandrille, founded in the 7th century and one of the first Benedictine abbeys in Normandy. It’s a delight to wander this serene place admiring the stonework and statues, and if you’re lucky, hear the monks chanting in prayer.

Cruise towards Vernon

We return to the ship for lunch and an afternoon of scenic sailing; cool off in the splash pool, enjoy a relaxing spa treatment or settle down with a good book in a comfortable lounger. We sail overnight to Vernon.

Visit to Caudebec-en-Caux or Abbey Jumièges & Abbey of Saint-Wandrille.

GIVERNY & LA ROCHE GUYON

Claude Monet's house & garden at Giverny

After breakfast we take a short drive to Giverny to visit Monet’s house and garden. The artist himself called his garden his ‘most beautiful masterpiece’ and it’s certainly one of the world’s most photographed and painted, ideally viewed in the delicate morning light. In the Japanese-inspired water garden, shaded by great weeping willows and surrounded by bamboo, rhododendrons and azaleas, is the lily pond where he painted his extraordinary Water Lilies series. There’s time to wander here, absorbing the tranquil atmosphere while marvelling at the light bouncing off the foliage of every hue and the magical reflections shimmering on the water.

We rejoin the ship for a leisurely lunch, followed by an on-board cheese & cider tasting as we sail to La Roche Guyon. A local Farmer joins us to explain the different stages in the production of cider - from apple juice to brandy, with a chance to taste paired with cheese and rillettes.

La Roche Guyon

This afternoon we visit the remarkable 18th-century Château de la Roche Guyon which towers over a loop of the Seine. Built up against the cliff that once concealed it from the world, it was originally an invisible cave dwelling at the time of the Norman invasions, that evolved through the ages with a mixture of architectural styles to become the elegant chateau we’ll see today. A castle dating from medieval times crowns the site, against a backdrop of thickly forested slopes. Wander the extensive gardens, with regimented paths and fruit trees sweeping down to the river and enjoy the superb views over the water.

We return to the ship where dinner awaits during which we slip our moorings and sail on to Mantes-La-Jolie, arriving later that night.

Visit to Claude Monet's house and garden, on-board cheese & cider tasting & visit to Château de La Roche Guyon.

CHÂTEAU DE MALMAISON

Château de Malmaison

This morning we make the short journey to the lavish Château de Malmaison, former residence of Napoleon I and his first wife Joséphine de Beauharnais. The name is thought to have derived from the existence of a hideout once located here, used by the Norman invaders as a base for their raids in the surrounding area. The grand palace you see today dates from the 18th-century however, and as you wander through the sumptuous interiors of the château, decorated in Empire style, you’ll be transported back in time to a fascinating and glamorous era of French history. The château was bought by Josephine Bonaparte in 1799 and became the seat of the French government together with the Tuileries from 1800-1802, and frequently played host to meetings of the ministers of the consulate. After the couple divorced in 1809, Josephine made the house her permanent home until her death here in 1814. See their private apartments – Napoleon’s secret staircase and Josephine’s opulent red and gilt bedroom, the highly decorated library and drawing rooms with exquisite furnishings and priceless artworks. Stroll through the splendid gardens, filled with plants and statues which were personally chosen by Joséphine, pausing to admire a beautifully restored pavilion and enjoy the delicate fragrance from the superb rose garden.

Cruise towards Issy

After lunch back on board, settle in for an afternoon’s cruising as we drift away from this picturesque spot. We pass by Mantes-la-Jolie’s old medieval stone bridge; the central section was destroyed during World War II and never repaired – another poignant reminder that this area of France has been a battleground for centuries.

This evening it’s time for another highlight in the elegant restaurant with the Chef’s Dinner, featuring some of their signature dishes - a truly memorable experience. Later we moor in Issy, on the outskirts of the French capital.

Visit to Château de Malmaison.

Château de Malmaison, France

This morning, enjoy free time in Paris, or join an optional visit to the magnificent Palace of Versailles and the outstanding Versailles Gardens.

Everything used in the construction of the palace was created in France and for over a century it was considered the ideal against which all European palaces were measured; as you explore the Royal Apartments with their antiques, tapestries and priceless artworks, and the Royal Opera and Chapel with its exceptional decoration, you’ll soon see why. The famous Hall of Mirrors with its 357 mirrors is truly a sight to behold, so too the immaculate gardens with their topiary hedges, sculptures and refreshing fountains.

During lunch on board, our ship leaves Issy to a more central mooring in Paris, so enjoy the familiar sight of this iconic skyline with the Eiffel Tower again coming into view. This afternoon there’s free time in Paris to explore as you wish. Take in a museum, such as Europe’s oldest science museum, dating from 1794 with its vast collection of inventions and industrial design or soak up artistic treasures in the Louvre or Musee d’Orsay with its world-renowned collections of artwork, furniture, sculpture and photography. Browse the legendary stores such as Galeries Lafayette, the smart boutiques in the arcaded Rue de Rivoli, or bohemian Montmartre’s quirky galleries and independent shops. After another memorable day, return to the ship for tonight’s final dinner in the company of newfound friends.

Rouen cruise port

Region France Rivers

Local Time 2024-05-07 11:18

Port Rouen cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Rouen, France. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Rouen is a Seine River cruise port and city located in Normandy (northwestern France), approx 120 km (75 mi) up from the river's entrance on the English Channel. The city is best known for its Gothic architecture, including Cathedrale Notre Dame, and Eglise St Maclou (with some of France's finest woodcarvings).

Rouen is Normandy's historical capital and one of the region's biggest. The city was among the richest in Europe during Middle Ages. On the right bank of Seine River, the old city contains so many historical buildings, that some call it "museum town". Joan of Arc was imprisoned and burnt at the stake at Rouen's marketplace. During WW2 (1939-45), the buildings on the left bank were almost totally destroyed. Even though it is located 120 km (75 mi) inland, Port Rouen serves ocean-going vessels (including small cruise ships) as an alternative port for Paris. Among the city's best attractions are its astronomical clock and cathedral.

Rouen, although far from sea, was the country's main seaport during the 16th century. However, in the 19th century, it was surpassed by Le Havre  (port to Paris City ). It is exciting to cruise up River Seine from the British Sea to the city surrounded by beautiful scenery punctuated by forests, cliffs, medieval chateaux and abbeys. Upstream from Giverny (the village where Monet spent his last years) and approx 160 km (100 mi) further on is France's capital Paris.

In 2019, the cruise port handled 30 ship calls (including 24 overnights) with ~23,000 passengers. In 2019, during Rouen Armada's 30th anniversary (L'Armada de la Liberte / 10-days long tall-sail ships parade on Seine RIver), the city attracted ~10 million visitors between June 6-16.

Port Rouen has 2 dedicated cruise terminals (2 berths) serving ocean-going vessels. However, the Port has size limitations (max LOA length 240 m / 787 ft) which means that it can handle only small- and medium-sized cruise ships and also megayachts. In 2021 started works on both quays extension to 250 m (820 ft). So far, the Port's largest cruise vessel is NYK Line's Asuka 2 (241 m).

The 10 finest French river cruises to take this year

T he problem with river cruising is that you often get blindsided by “star rivers”. There are several iconic waterways around the globe that just must be travelled, but benefits can be found if you shop around. Nowhere is this truer than in France .

A short ferry, train or plane ride lets you explore the châteaux of the Loire and the wonders of Paris on Seine, while a trip down the Rhône brings you Van Gogh’s favourite café and the opportunity to dance “sur le Pont d’Avignon”, for a small fee.

The trouble is, stars come with crowds, so looking beyond the obvious is a good idea. I defy anyone to gaze at the roof of the Hospices de Beaune on the Saône and not be mesmerised by its geometrical beauty, or walk the streets of Strasbourg on the Ill and not believe you’re back in medieval times. Sail the great rivers, of course, but don’t forget the little guys.

1. The Seine

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the highlights of this cruise with a personal commentary on the 1066 Norman invasion as you move along its length. The Cathedral in Bayeux is also worth a visit, as is that of Rouen , the ancient capital of Normandy .

A visit to the D-Day beaches at Arromanches is soothed by walking around the harbour at Honfleur, with its narrow five story houses that seem to have been squashed together like the keys on a piano. Do try the local Calvados.

Riviera Travel (01283 893924: rivieratravel.co.uk ) has the 8 day ‘The Seine, Paris and Normandy River’ cruise from £2,229 per person. Price includes Flights/Eurostar, Free wifi and drink/beverages package. Calling at Paris, Giverny, Rouen, Caudebec. Departs 2024 23 rd September.

2. The Gironde, Dordogne and Garonne

Bordeaux is a world capital of wine , so as you might expect, names normally associated with supermarket shelves such as Saint-Emilion and Cadillac are part of this cruise. Entered through one of its seven medieval gates, St Emilion has a charming cobblestone village where Grands Crus Classé wines and beautiful architecture are a perfect match.

Similarly, part of the central square in Libourne is surrounded by the traditional arcades and is especially lively on market days. At Blaye, Vauban’s 17 th century citadel is a military masterpiece complete with village and ramparts to explore.

Scenic (0161 516 5548; scenic.co.uk ) has the 8 day ‘Bordeaux Affair’ cruise from £2,532 per person. Price includes Flights, Free wifi and drink/beverages package. Calling at Bordeaux, Lilbourne, Blaye, Cadillac, Bordeaux. Departs 2024 11 th October.

3. The Rhône, Saone and Seine

Exploring France by travelling on three of its rivers, with extended stays at ports of call to explore their hinterland, is a great way to truly discover the country. This cruise offers a private, after dark concert in Rouen’s cathedral and a visit to the Normandy beaches.

You’ll also lock eyes on the towering 2,000-year-old Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct and view the private rooms at Versailles as Marie Antoinette saw them. In Beaune, taste local camembert along with some of the world’s finest Chardonnay wines, and in Giverny, take a stroll through Monet’s beautiful garden at the house where the painter lived for over 40 years.

Uniworld (0808 168 9231; uniworld.com/uk ) has the 15 day ‘Grand France’ cruise from £5,849 per person. Price includes flights, free wifi and drink/beverages package. Calling at Arles, Avignon, Viviers, Lyon, Mâcon , Rouen, Paris. Departs 2025 23 rd March.

Technically, you’ll see more of Germany than France on this journey, but the River Ill, which surrounds the Unesco-listed Grande Île at the centre of Strasbourg, is worth an honourable mention.

The pink-sandstone facade of the Gothic-style Strasbourg Cathedral, with its cache of ancient murals and astronomical clock, looms large. Canals branch off from the main river course creating scenic walkways and bridges, adding to the allure of the ancient cityscape. Explore the red, half timbered houses of Bernkastel and play spot the castle as you sail further south along the Rhine Valley.

Avalon Waterways (0330 0588243; avalonwaterways.co.uk ) has the 11 day ‘Rhine and Mosel (Southbound)’ cruise from £3,620 per person. Price includes return flights, rail travel, free wines and beers. Calling at Amsterdam , Cologne, Kobelenz, Speyer, Strasbourg, Breisach, Basel. Departs 2024 9th October.

5. The Yonne and Loing

The waters of the Yonne north of Paris are too shallow for bigger boats, so this cruise lets you experience a quieter slice of French history and life. The Cathedral Saint-Etienne in Sens was one of the first gothic cathedrals to be built in France, while Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne lets you visit the grandeur and magnificence of Fontainebleau. Barbizon has a fascinating eponymous art museum and the studios of Rousseau and Millet, who lived and worked here.

Great Railway Journeys (01904 734 152; greatrail.com ) has the 7 day ‘Waterways of The Yonne, Paris and The Petite Seine by Barge’ cruise from £2,595 per person.

Price includes return rail travel from London, free wifi and drinks package. Calling at Paris, Melun, Barbizon, Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne and Sens. Departs 2024 4th September.

6. The Rhône and Saône

There is something magical about Arles. Not just that you can sit in the café where Van Gogh watched the world go by then walk a few yards to explore the virtually intact Roman amphitheatre, but the slow pace of life is all around.

Perched on the banks of the Saône, Mâcon has a café-lined promenade, while an overnight stay in Lyon lets you enjoy the city’s best restaurants and watering holes. At Avignon, you can explore the Palais des Papes as well as the huge indoor market to pick up Provençal snacks.

Newmarket Holidays (0333 060 1339; newmarketholidays.co.uk ) has the 7 night  ‘Rhône, Burgundy and Provence cruise’ from £2,340 per person. Price includes flights, free wifi, premium all-inclusive drinks package. Calling at Chalon-sur-Saone, Mâcon, Lyon, Avignon, Arles, La Voulte-sur-Rhône. Departs 2024  14th September.

7. Canal du Midi

The Mediterranean section of the 18 th century-built Canal du Midi is often referred to as both a technical innovation and a work of art. Between Portiragnes to Béziers alone, you’ll cross an aqueduct over the River Orb and ascend a seven-lock flight of unique, oval gateways. With a visit to the double walled city of Carcassonne and also Pézenas, Languedoc’s ancient capital, a truffle hunt, a private wine tasting and passing through Europe’s oldest canal tunnel, this cruise lets you get under the skin of Provence.

European Waterways (01753 598555; europeanwaterways.com ) has the 6-night ‘Classic Canal du Midi cruise’ from £4,850 per person. Price includes local transfers, all meals with wines on board, a 24/7 open bar, excursions/admittance fees as per the itinerary, bicycles and spa pool. Calling at Marseillan, Portiragnes, Béziers, Capestang, Sallèles d’Aude, Le Somail. Departs 2024 22nd September.

8. The Saône

Passing through Burgundy — a wine region that needs no introduction — this cruise lets you visit walled towns including Beaune with its beautiful 14 th century hospices complete with glazed tile roof and Tournus, which in turn offers its remarkable Romanesque Abbey Saint-Philibert. You’ll berth at towns that reverberate with the names found on sought after red wine labels, finally arriving at the culinary and architectural box of delights that is Lyon.

AmaWaterways (0800 520 2250; amawaterways.co.uk ) has the 7 night ‘Flavours of Burgundy Cruise’ from £2,754 per person based on a Cat E Stateroom. Price includes flights from London or Manchester and savings of £1,000 per couple.  Calling at Dijon, Seurre, Chalon-sur-Saône, Tournus, Mâcon, Lyon. Departs 2025 27th March.

9. The Loire

The chateaux of the Loire will always be a draw, and while this cruise has an all-day excursion to discover them, Nantes is a jewel in its own right. The castle of the Dukes of Brittany, giant mechanical elephants — yes really — and taking coffee in La Cigale,  the wonderful 19 th century Belle Epoch Brasserie, are essential sites to tick off.

Explore Angers with its Terra Botanica, a plant-themed amusement park, the Château d’Angers and its Apocalypse Tapestry and the museum of St Nazaire. The 96-guest MS Loire Princess adds to the experience as a luxury paddle steamer designed specifically for the river.

CroisieEurope (01756 691269; croisieurope.co.uk ) has the 6 day ‘The Loire Valley, a Royal Legacy Cruise’ from £1,752 per person, including all meals, drinks and return flights from London Gatwick and overseas transfers. Calling at St Nazaire, Nantes, Anciens, Chalonnes-sur-Loire, Nantes. Departs 2024 23 rd  July.

10. The Rhône and Rhine

This cruise offers something special. The chance to experience and compare the Provençal lifestyle of Arles with the Franco-German culture of Strasbourg. In essence a cultural journey along the Rhône and the Rhine. Explore Avignon’s grand Palace of the Popes and Cologne’s majestic cathedral, both Unesco sites.

Savour Lyon’s rich culinary traditions and the Rhineland’s hearty flavours and admire the landscapes that inspired Van Gogh in the Netherlands and Provence.

Viking (0800 319 66 60; vikingrivercruises.co.uk ) has the 14 day ‘Lyon, Provence and The Rhineland’ from £5,390 per person. Price includes all meals, drinks and return flights from Gatwick and overseas transfers. Calling at Avignon, Arles, Viviers, Tournon, Vienne , Lyon, Burgundy, Basel, Breisach, Strasbourg, Speyer, Rudesheim. Departs 2025 21st May.

If you’re travelling by Eurostar , many cruise companies now offer regional airport and train station departures. Therefore, the price mentioned on the website can be different to what you actually pay. Plus offers come and go, so it’s always a good idea to look around before you book.

Avalon Waterways’ European River Cruises: a New View of the Old World

Perfectly balance elegance and ease as you set sail down some of the world’s most legendary waters.

Avalon - Panorama Suite Lifestyle 98 2.png

Embark on an Avalon Waterways river cruise and immerse yourself in the essence of each destination along the world's greatest rivers. Explore the tranquil villages of Germany, the enchanting retreats of Austria and Hungary, the majestic cliffs and fortresses of France, and the vibrant hues of Holland. Avalon brings the world—and dreams—to life.

Cruising Elevated

Avalon Waterways goes against the current, delivering boundless exploration with everything from unexpected in-port experiences—for example, a guided kayaking tour of Amsterdam's storied canals—to a dynamic selection of “Special Interest” cruises highlighting some of the continent’s most beloved features. These include Holland’s spring tulips, the beers of Belgium and Germany, and Christmastime markets along the Danube .

Wide Open Wonder—Better by Design

Avalon Waterways’ European River Cruises: a New View of the Old World

Then there are the vessels themselves: Avalon Waterways operates a fleet of 13 suite ships across Europe’s many rivers, with each vessel featuring exclusive Panorama Suites. These spacious rooms—which make up 80 percent of each individual ship—are specially configured to highlight every view, with beds facing a floor-to-ceiling panoramic window so that the outside world is right there at your disposal, without ever missing a moment. Larger suites also result in fewer passengers, adding to the ship’s intimacy, while onboard farm-to-fork fare includes a bevy of regional flavors, from mushroom schnitzel with tartar sauce to Burgundy snails served up with fresh baguette.

Amazing, Included

Avalon Waterways’ growing list of itineraries showcase Europe’s most storied and fabled channels such as the Danube, the continent’s second-longest river and a former frontier for the Roman Empire, and the Seine, which stretches 485-miles from Dijon, France , to the English Channel. Not only is this river central to French culture and identity, but its captivating banks have inspired many an Impressionist painting, including Claude Monet’s 1869 masterpiece, Bathers at La Grenouillere.

Avalon Waterways’ European River Cruises: a New View of the Old World

One of the newest river offerings includes cruises along Portugal’s enchanting Douro River , which flows among verdant forests, steep hills, and terraced vineyards,—meandering through the heart of one of the oldest wine-producing regions on earth—as well as the Garonne River, a grape-lined waterbody in France’s Bordeaux region, brimming with quaint country hamlets and famous wine cellars.

Sail Away from the Ordinary

Each Avalon Waterways cruise features an average of 23 excursions, all arranged into three categories—Active, Discovery, and Classic. This way travelers can tailor a trip to fit individual needs and interests.

Take the eight-day European river cruise, The Rhine & Moselle: Canals, Vineyards, which sails from Luxembourg to Holland along the Moselle River, stopping at picturesque towns nestled among vineyards and through spectacular cliff-hugging scenery. One port-of-call is Cochem, where you can choose between all three categories of excursions

Avalon Waterways’ European River Cruises: a New View of the Old World

If it’s a bit of exercise you’re after, book the “Active” hike above Cochem to see its medieval architecture through a bird’s-eye view. Looking for something educational? The “Discovery” option includes a visit to an early-19th century mill, where travelers can experience the traditional art of mustard making. Along with a guided walk through Cochem’s winding streets, the “Classic” excursion also includes a visit to the hilltop Reichsburg Castle, a neo-gothic masterpiece situated 330-feet above the river.

There’s also Avalon Waterways’ eight-day Vide Portugal: Vineyards & Villages cruise along the splendid Douro River, which winds its way among family farms, sleepy villages, and a world of cultural treasures, including the hauntingly melodic Fado music. Day two of the itinerary includes a visit to the country’s greater Porto region. Whether it’s picking up a bicycle from the ship’s Adventure Center and pedaling along the riverbanks, opting for a Discovery excursion to a Romanesque monastery to savor the beatific sounds of a choir-sung Gregorian Chant, or enjoying a full-day guided tour of Braga, an elegant town northeast of Porto that’s often regarded as the country’s religious center, how you spend the day is entirely up to you.
