Adventure Itinerary

Your Grand Canyon guided backpacking tour begins with an early morning pick-up at your Phoenix hotel. We then transport you to the North Rim via a five and a half hour drive to the North Kaibab trailhead, passing over the Marble Canyon Gorge and through the Arizona Strip below the Vermilion Cliffs and up through the Kaibab National Forest. We begin our descent starting at about 8000 feet elevation. The Phantom Ranch at the Colorado River is over a mile down in elevation and fourteen miles in distance. You will be carrying a backpack weighing approximately 35 to 37 pounds. It will contain your personal belongings along with the food and camping gear we provide. This is the only trail on the North Rim that has pack horses and mules allowed on it and it is considered the main route to the river below. On this first day, we hike down seven miles to our first campsite at Cottonwood Camp. At this point we have already left the dense forest of the North Rim far behind and descended into the semi-arid desert of the lower canyon environment.

On the second day of our Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike, we leave after an early breakfast and hike another seven miles down to the Bright Angel Campground adjacent to Phantom Ranch. There is so much to see here. The historic Phantom Ranch was built by the well-known architect Mary Colter back in the 1930s and is nestled into a canyon facing the river. Side canyons beg to be explored if you have the energy after a day of hiking, or you can sit by the river waiting for a raft to go by. This is a popular, well-traveled trail, so you will see many visitors from all around the world during our time here.

On the third day of our Grand Canyon guided backpacking tour, we cross the Colorado River on an extension bridge and hike four miles up the Bright Angel trail to our next camp at Indian Garden. A large artesian spring gushes from a cliff at this verdant campsite. In the afternoon, we offer the option to hike out to a viewpoint above the Colorado River.

On our fourth and final day, we finish up our trip with a four and a half mile hike up the trail to the South Rim. By midday we arrive at the South Rim at an elevation of 7000 feet. A great time to stop for an ice cream cone to celebrate!

Pickup Locations

Our Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike and guided backpacking tours start and end in Scottsdale, AZ; saving you travel time and money on your travel expenses compared to leaving from Flagstaff, AZ. Transportation from our Scottsdale Hotel Partner is included in the cost of the tour. We do not pickup in Flagstaff, AZ as orientation is mandatory and takes place in Scottsdale, AZ the night prior to the hike.

Description

Our Summer Rim to Rim Tour is a Grand Canyon legend and deservedly so! The ability to hike across the Canyon is what makes the Rim to Rim so special, as you have the unique opportunity to experience both rims and everything in between. The summer version runs from May 12 through September 15, and it’s important to be prepared (mentally and physically) to be potentially hiking in 105+ degree fahrenheit temperatures. If you’d prefer a Rim to Rim experience with cooler temperatures, check out our Autumn Rim to Rim or Winter Rim to Rim to Rim .

The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike begins on the cooler, shaded North Rim where we hike down the North Kaibab Trail. We then meet up with Bright Angel Creek and hike along its shores to Cottonwood Campground, a stunning desert oasis for our first night. Our second campsite is the famous Bright Angel Campground, and on the hike there we’ll traverse the amazing Bright Angel Box Canyon. During the evening of the second day, we’ll enjoy camping near Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River, before continuing our hike via the Bright Angel Trail to Havasupai Garden on the third day. We spend our last evening at the lush desert oasis of Havasupai Garden. We resume our hike and top out the fourth day at the South Rim, where a shuttle awaits us to complete our journey back to Flagstaff.

Important : It is strongly recommended to book your  Grand Canyon backpacking trip  5 months in advance due to the Park’s permit system. Backpacking permits are issued on the first of the month 4+ months in advance (see  deadlines for each month .) Permits for the most popular trips sell out very quickly during the initial lottery, so registering prior to the deadline of the month you’re interested in is highly beneficial. You can also pick any dates!

$1955 Per Person

Permit deadlines.

Grand Canyon’s permit process is complicated, but we take care of everything so you don’t have to worry about it! Here’s what you do need to know – Grand Canyon issues backpacking permits through a lottery system 4+ months in advance ( deadlines listed below ). Permits for popular trips sell out immediately during the initial lottery, so  it’s important to register before the process begins .

When you register we will ask you for backup dates and itineraries, as they are helpful if your first choice isn’t available. If a permit request is denied, pre-permit registrants have top priority for open spaces on confirmed permits, and very often get spots. Finally, we have good success rates, but your deposit is 100% refundable or transferable if we’re unsuccessful. Still have questions? Call us at 800-715-HIKE (4453)!

  • Shuttle to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon: 4-hour drive from Flagstaff
  • Hiking Mileage: 6.8 miles
  • Elevation Loss: 4,161 feet

We begin our Grand Canyon Rim to Rim backpacking trip at 8,000 feet and hike downhill approximately 7 miles to our first camp at Cottonwood Campground. This is a fantastic hike for the natural history buff as we descend through a dense mixed conifer forest on the North Rim to a semi-arid High Sonoran desert environment inside the Grand Canyon. Also en route we hike through the ominous and stunning Red Wall Limestone and past Roaring Springs – a cascading stream erupting from the side of an adjacent slope.

  • Hiking Mileage: 7.2 miles
  • Elevation Loss: 1,600 feet

On day two we’ll break camp and hike another 7 miles down to Bright Angel Campground. En route we traverse the amazing Bright Angel Box Canyon. With sheer granite and schist walls rising hundreds of feet above us, we hike along the crystal clear, spring-fed desert oasis of Bright Angel Creek. Our camp is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon adjacent to the Colorado River and historic Phantom Ranch.

  • Hiking Mileage: 4.5 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 1,500 feet

After a hearty breakfast we’ll pack up and make an early departure to take advantage of the cool hiking hours of the morning. Hiking on the Bright Angel Trail along the Colorado and up Pipe Creek we’ll arrive at Garden Creek. From here we’ll hike upstream past its junction with Pipe Creek to Havasupai Garden – a spring site that watered seasonal Havasupai garden plots for centuries. From here it’s a short final hike to our camp for the night – Havasupai Garden Campground, another enchanting camp with shade and water.

  • Hiking Mileage: 4.8 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 3,000 feet
  • Shuttle to Flagstaff: 1.5-hour drive from the South Rim

A casual morning breakfast will precede a beautiful hike out as we continue our ascent to the rim via the Bright Angel Trail. This trail is the most hiked in the Park because of its endless views, availability of water, and its steady grade taking us out of the Grand Canyon. It’s a finish to a hike you’ll never forget!

Please Note : We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however it can change occasionally based on temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging/campground availability, guest ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. Wonderful Time

Just finished the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim. This trip exceeded our expectations. Our group had a wonderful time and our guide Karla was excellent. Will definitely do another trip with Wildland in the future.

Max was awesome! He made what seemed like a daunting trip doable and helped us easily achieve our bucket list dream! The 4 day trek was great and allowed for time to rest and recharge plus enjoy the views around.

Highly Recommend

Everything about the trip exceeded my expectations! Leading up to the trip, Wildland Trekking had top-notch communication with us. Chris was an amazing guide. The perfect amount of leadership to keep us safe and on time, knowledge to educate us about the canyon, plant life, wildlife, and hiking in general, and friendly demeaner to immediately set a team/family tone within our group of complete strangers. His rustic cooking talent was over-the-top! I have absolutely NO COMPLAINTS about our trip, and highly recommend Wildland Trekking.

  • Trip Details

Private Tour Upgrade Available?

Tour length, departure times, difficulty (1-10), recommended abilities, attractions, special interests, what is included on your backpacking trips.

Backpacking trips include overnight permits, lightweight tents, team cooking equipment, main meals, trailhead transport from the closest town, water purification, team first aid and emergency communication, and of course experienced backpacking guides.  Almost all of our backpacking trips also include a hotel night (double occupancy) before and after the hike, as well as a team dinner pre- and post-hike.

What gear do I need to bring?

Dreamland Safari Tours provides tents, team cooking gear, water purification, team first aid & emergency communications. You need to bring (or rent) a backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cup/bowl/spoon, and your hiking attire including a waterproof jacket and down jacket. Rentals for backpacks, sleeping bags & sleeping pads are available through Dreamland Safari Tours.

What type of food should I expect?

Dreamland Safari Tours provides breakfasts, dinners, and light lunches while we are on the trail (as well as water, coffee and tea). You can expect both fresh meals and the occasional backpacker's freeze-dried meal. We can accommodate many dietary restrictions with prior notice.

What is the bathroom situation?

Except for the Grand Canyon itineraries, there are no outhouses to be found on our backpacking itineraries. On most backpacking trips, expect to bury solid human waste by digging cat holes. For some itineraries such as the Paria and Buckskin Gulch, the use of wag bags is mandatory.

How much weight will I have to carry?

Standard pack weights for most of our itineraries vary between 35 to 40 lbs, which includes a ~5 lbs team gear allocation in addition to your personal gear. Your gear choices, trip duration, and water availability on your itinerary are the main determinants of final pack weight.

Is it possible to hire porters?

Most of our itineraries are subject to strict group size limits, which makes it difficult to impossible to offer porter services. That said: if you are booking a private backpacking adventure and would like to explore the possibility of adding on porter services, please give us a call or send us an email to discuss.

How do I get to Kanab or Escalante or... ?

Most of our backpacking programs start and finish in small desert towns which can be admittedly hard to reach. Public transport options are very limited, which makes travel by (rental) car advisable. If you are flying in and would like to avoid renting a car, please give us a call - we may be able to assist with car pools with other backpackers or airport pick ups.

Is there a place to leave my vehicle?

There is a safe spot to park your vehicle for the duration of the backpack on each of our itineraries.

Is tipping the guide customary?

Yes! A typical gratuity is $20-$40 per person per day -- so for a 5-day trip, the suggested tip would be between $100 and $200 total. You can read more about guide tipping from the perspective of one of our guides on our blog here .

About Backpacking in the Grand Canyon

Backpacking in Grand Canyon National Park is an adventure of a special kind – which is why not just one or two but THREE of our backpacking adventures take place there!

Out of the nearly five million visitors that the Grand Canyon receives each year, fewer than 1% venture below the rim.  For the adventurous few who hike and backpack below the rim, the most sought-after destination is the so-called “corridor” that spans the Grand Canyon north-south at one of its widest points, connecting Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim to the North Rim Lodge on the far side of the canyon.  The corridor is where you’ll find the Bright Angel, South Kaibab and North Kaibab trails, home to the classic Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim and Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim itineraries.

There are a lot of considerations that go into preparing for a Grand Canyon backpacking adventure. Given the steep initial descent and final ascent that come with any below-the-rim adventure, physical fitness is paramount. Advance permits are required for any overnight stays below the rim, and campgrounds regularly book up months in advance.

Due to the ~5,000 ft vertical difference in altitude between the rim and the Colorado River, prospective hikers also have to be prepared for extreme temperature swings and wildly varying conditions. It is not unusual for temperatures at the bottom of the Grand Canyon to be 20 degrees hotter than at the rim. If the forecast calls for a pleasant 78 degrees Fahrenheit at the South Rim, it may be a scorching 100 degrees at Phantom Ranch.

Yet for all those who are not deterred by the steep terrain, highly variable weather, and extreme remoteness of the Grand Canyon below the rim, any backpacking trip into the canyon is bound to create memories that will last a lifetime.

About Dreamland’s Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim (R2R2R) Grand Canyon Adventure

If you’ve read about our Rim-to-Rim backpacking trip prior to landing on this even more immersive Grand Canyon backpacking adventure, you already have an idea of why the spending time on the corridor trails is a magical experience.

The Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim hike is one of the most extended Grand Canyon backpacking adventures that we at Dreamland Safari Tours offer, and as such, it demands a high caliber of fitness and the willingness to be fully immersed in a remote, physically challenging environment for almost an entire week.

If this type of adventure calls your soul, you will be rewarded with solitude and the opportunity to explore the magic of the inner canyon to your heart’s content.  From Devil’s Corkscrew and Skeleton Point to Ribbon Falls; from Manzanita to a (possibly snowy) North Kaibab ascent – a five day double-crossing of the Grand Canyon is bound to leave your heart singing and your soul replenished.

The Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim measures about 45 miles overall, with roughly 20,000 ft of overall vertical change. Even for those who are already in tip-top shape, advance training is absolutely essential.  This trip is intended only for experienced hikers who are physically fit and able to carry a minimum of 35 lbs over a five-day span while negotiating significant loss and gain in elevation throughout the hike.  Each hiker will be responsible for carrying their full share of gear, food, and water, and most importantly, for making sure they are fit for the hike by training thoroughly and tackling similar terrain, inclines, and hiking distances well in advance of the actual hike.

About Dreamland’s Guided Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim Backpack

We at Dreamland Safari Tours prefer the cooler winter months for our Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim adventures – to avoid scorching temperatures in the inner canyon, to possibly chase desert snow on the North Rim, and because it is easier to find solitude in the winter while the North Rim is not accessible from the top due to seasonal road closures.

We are proud to utilize our decades of experience in desert adventures, backcountry risk management and expedition planning to whisk you away to these magical Grand Canyon locales . You bring your personal backpacking gear & camera; we take care of the team gear logistics. Rental options for select gear such as backpacks and sleeping bags are available.

Our 7-day* guided Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim Backpacking Adventure includes: (* Custom dates & condensed itineraries are available – ask us about our private trips.)

Guest Experiences with Dreamland Safari Tours

We had a phenomenal winter adventure walking the length of the  Paria  canyon with some side canyon explorations. This was major bucket list check off! Sunny did a fantastic job as the lead guide. Our meals were plentiful and excellent. She had some great tips and tricks for comfort for winter camping. I enjoyed learning about the  Paria from her and getting to know her better. She is a great steward of Leave No Trace ethics and safe backpacking  practices. I also really enjoyed hiking with Maddi and Andrea who also guide with Dreamland.

Sunny was great about pre-trip communication. She developed a thorough pre-trip packet and answered my emails promptly. I really appreciate the extra time she took to give me gear, day hike, and reading recommendations. Booking was easy and I think the price is spot on for all that is included and her service. Her itinerary included hotel stays before and after the trip with associated meals. This was a huge perk that other groups do not routinely offer. It was great to have a “home base” in Kanab at either end of the trip.

I highly recommend this multi-day backpack excursion with Dreamland as well as their other day trips.

Diantha W – February 2021 TripAdvisor

My family and I did a 42 mile hike down the  Paria  with Sunny and Nathalie. It was AMAZING. I felt so completely confident with the terrain knowing that Sunny was scouting quick-sand and drop-offs for us. It was the most beautifully in-nature immersive experience I’ve ever had. I learned so much from each of these marvelous women and can’t wait for my next trip with them. The trip was technically through Sunny’s company AWExpeditions, and supported by Dreamland.

From what I understand, the conditions during our particular trip were a little more cumbersome than usual due to this season’s floods. We trained the whole year in advance and did great, we were aged 34-68, and I’m heavy enough that people don’t reach for the term “athletic” when they see me, but we all did great. Felt good to live in my body and move in tune with my body for 5 whole days.

Also, shout out to Jan who drove us to the trailhead and picked us up; her enthusiasm and support was memorable.

Shannon B – October 2022 TripAdvisor

WOW! I just completed a two night backpack  through  Buckskin  Gulch with Sunny and Orion from Dreamland Safari Tours. Both guides were really capable, knowledgeable and fun to be around. I appreciated all the pre-hike planning that Dreamland put into this difficult hike through this wet slot canyon – this enabled me to be prepared for this rigorous tour.

I would definitely recommend Dreamland for your future adventures.

Neal W – October 2020 TripAdvisor

Wow! Just wow! Everything I was hoping for and more. The geology was jaw dropping, the trip organization was stellar, and Sunny’s intimate knowledge of the canyon allowed us to see the little secrets that other will miss. But the best part was Sunny’s competency in not only leading the trip, but invoking a camaraderie and chemistry amongst a group of strangers that will inevitably lead to long term friendships. That is is a gift to all of us!

What to Expect on this Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim Guided Trip

Completing a double-crossing of the Grand Canyon in the north-south direction along the so-called corridor trails (North Kaibab, Bright Angel and/or South Kaibab trails) is a highly demanding multi-day endeavor with close to 20,000ft of vertical change.  As veteran Grand Canyon hikers like to say: “Down is optional; up is mandatory.”  Just like our shorter Rim-to-Rim Backpack , the Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim (R2R2R) Backpack is a fully guided adventure and Dreamland Safari Tours will take care of group logistics and team gear.  That said, have to be prepared to carry your own overnight gear as well as up to three liters of water, snacks, and your share of the food required for the entire time on the trail. Depending on your gear choices and packing discipline, your backpack will likely weigh upwards of 35 pounds.  Each day we will cover 8-10 miles of remote and at times steep terrain. Several sections along the descent/ascent from and to the rims include exposed spots which may be challenging for individuals with an extreme fear of heights.

If you are concerned about the level of steepness or exposure on this adventure, you may enjoy our Paria Canyon or Boulder Mail Trail backpacking trips instead. Should you be questioning your physical ability to complete and enjoy this backpacking adventure, please give us a call at 435-644-5506 to discuss the feasibility of your participation.

What Gear Should I Bring for the Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim Backpack?

All participants will receive a comprehensive gear check list as well as recommendations for gear to buy or rent for this trip. We provide tents, cooking gear & meals but ask that participants bring their own overnight gear (i.e. backpack, sleeping pad, sleeping bag etc.). Dreamland Safari Tours has rentals available for select gear items such as backpacks, sleeping bags, and trekking poles, which may be reserved on a first-come-first-serve basis.

A Word about Grand Canyon Below-The-Rim Backpacking Permits

Overnight permits for Grand Canyon backpacking adventures become available three months prior to departure and are competitive in nature.  We take care of all permitting requirements on your behalf and will reconfirm the details of your departure as soon as we have permits in hand. In the even that we are unsuccessful in obtaining permits for your scheduled dates and itinerary, we will work with you to establish an alternative and/or provide a refund for any fees already paid.

Grand Canyon West Rim Cost & How To Save

' src=

I write about things I love to do in Las Vegas. If you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission, which helps to support my work. Learn more

Hi there! If you’re trying to figure out how much it will cost you to go to Grand Canyon West, you’re in the right place.

I live in Las Vegas and frequently visit the West Rim – so often, in fact, that I’ve done every attraction there.

So, today, I’m breaking it all down for you: from how to get in for the lowest price to the best packages. Plus, I’ll share my tips on how to save time and money during your visit.

Are you ready to plan your Grand Canyon adventure? Let’s do it!

Grand Canyon West: How It Works

General admission, add-on experiences: grand canyon west, adventure bundles & prices, other trip costs to consider, my favorite west rim tour from las vegas, tips for saving time & money.

Before I cover the ticket options, I want to explain how the West Rim works. It operates similarly to a theme park, although at a natural wonder of the world.

And I don’t mean that in a negative way; it’s very well-run, and the setup makes getting around easy for guests.

So first, because it’s on Hualapai tribal land, you’ll need to buy a General Admission (GA) ticket. You can buy these at the door or online.

This is the entry fee required for all guests to access Grand Canyon West – with one exception, which I’ll cover later.

Once inside the gates, you’ll hop on the free shuttle service to the Grand Canyon viewpoints.

But if you want to do the other attractions there – like the Skywalk, Helicopter & Boat Ride, or Zipline, those will all cost you more money.

Currently, Grand Canyon West offers two ways to buy tickets:

1. Purchase each experience separately (à la carte)

2. Save some money with a pre-packaged Adventure Bundle

I’ll cover the à la carte options first and then the Adventure Bundles.

So, if you’re buying à la carte, you’ll first need a GA ticket to enter. General Admission tickets currently start at $51 (plus tax).

This is the lowest price per person to visit the West Rim.

With a GA ticket, you’ll have access to the free bus service that takes you on a tour of the following locations:

  • Hualapai Point, an old cowboy town
  • Eagle Point with scenic Grand Canyon views
  • A native American village to see how huts are made
  • Guano Point for more canyon views and trails

Check out my Grand Canyon West Visitor’s Guide to see what the GA tour is like!

Is It Worth Going If I’m Only Getting A General Admission Ticket?

I absolutely think it’s worth going if you’re only getting GA, especially if you’ve never seen the Grand Canyon before.

The view from Guano Point is worth the trip alone.

And the trail to the old tramway and the Highpoint hike are phenomenal. Highpoint’s hike even takes you to the top of a rock formation overlooking the canyon.

In addition to the GA tour, you can also choose from these add-on experiences:

  • Skywalk: starting at $28 per person
  • Meal Ticket: $25 per person
  • Zipline: starting at $45 per person
  • Helicopter & Pontoon Tour: starting at $299 per person

The above rates are subject to change and may vary depending on the day. All prices are before sales tax.

Are Meal Tickets Worth It?

For convenience, yes. With a meal ticket, you won’t have to worry about paying at the restaurant. Or have to wait on your server to bring the bill.

But, for adults, buying a meal ticket à la carte won’t save you any money over paying at the restaurant.

Get my recommendations for the best places to eat in my Grand Canyon Restaurant guide .

Bundle Savings

Grand Canyon West offers pre-packaged Adventure Bundles. So no matter when you go, you can save money by getting one of these.

For instance, each package below will  save you at least $11 per person over buying the tickets individually.

The following are the current Adventure Bundles that the West Rim offers. You can book these for any day you plan on attending in 2024.

It’s also usually a good idea to book early to lock in the lowest rate. (I’ve noticed a few price increases over the last year or so.)

Please note that you do not need to buy a GA ticket with a bundle deal, as it’s already included.

+Skywalk +General Admission

+Skywalk +Meal Ticket +General Admission

+Helicopter Flight +Pontoon Ride +Skywalk +General Admission

*Rates are the starting prices and are subject to change. Prices are not inclusive of sales tax.

None of the Adventure Bundles include a ticket for the Zipline experience. So, you must purchase a separate ticket for that if you want to ride the lines.

I highly recommend driving yourself when visiting the Grand Canyon.

And that’s because it’s better to be in control of your day and take as much time as you need rather than be at the mercy of a tour company’s schedule.

That way, too, you can always add on any attractions (assuming availability) once you see them in person.

But, there are expenses to self-driving that will increase the total amount of your Grand Canyon trip:

If you’re visiting from out of town, you’ll need to rent a car to get to the West Rim. Typical rates for a one-day, mid-size vehicle are about $100.

Unless you have a big vehicle, you’ll only have to stop once from Las Vegas to fill your tank of gas. So, that’s an additional expenditure of $40-$50.

Parking Fees

Grand Canyon West has free parking for all visitors, so you won’t have to pay anything extra to park.

If you don’t want to drive yourself, my favorite excursion is by Pink Adventure Tours. It’s roughly 9-10 hours round-trip and departs Las Vegas at 7 am.

It includes your General Admission ticket to the West Rim, lunch, and time to go on the Skywalk (although you must pay separately for the skybridge).

This is a small tour with a maximum of 10 people and drivers who are both knowledgeable and friendly.

But it’s quite a bit more expensive than driving yourself – typically around $300 per person.

If you’re interested in going, you can check pricing and availability here:

Below are a few savings tips based on the times I’ve visited the Grand Canyon.

Buy Tickets Online For Faster Entry

If you buy your tickets before you go, you can head straight to the shuttle when you arrive. That means you’ll bypass the ticket line, which often takes an hour or more during peak times.

In the past, I’ve also noticed that online rates for tickets were a few dollars cheaper than at the door. So, purchasing online may save you some money, too.

Meal Tickets For Kids Aren’t Necessary

I don’t typically recommend buying meal tickets for kids (12 years or younger).

They’re unavailable online, and you’ll spend more than you have to if you buy them an adult meal ticket. (Last time I was there, kids’ entrees were $6 less than adults’.)

So instead, I recommend paying at the restaurant for children’s meals.

The only exceptions to this suggestion are if you’re getting your child the Grander bundle or the recently added Meal Package bundle.

Even though an adult meal ticket is in those packages, buying one of these for kids is still cheaper than paying for the experiences separately.

Skip Hualapai Point If You’re Short On Time

Hualapai Point is the first stop on the tour. It’s an old Western town with a Mexican restaurant, a shooting gallery, and a saloon serving root beer floats.

But it doesn’t offer any Grand Canyon views (except far off in the distance). So, if you’re short on time, I recommend staying on the bus and skipping this stop.

Or come back to it after seeing Eagle Point and Hualapai Point. Those are the real showstoppers when it comes to the view.

Kids 4 And Younger Get In For Free

Kids four years of age and younger get into the West Rim for free. They can also go on the Skywalk for free if they can walk independently. (For safety reasons, the West Rim doesn’t allow guests to carry a child on the Skywalk.)

Go To Hualapai Point If You Need To Buy Tickets On-Site

Although I recommend buying tickets online, I recently discovered another location where you can get tickets without standing in a long line.

This detour will add some minutes to your trip. But if you’re visiting from spring to fall, you’ll get your tickets faster here than at the main terminal.

So, for guests  driving to the West Rim , you’ll want to exit before you get to the main terminal. Just follow the signs to the Zipline and Cabins at Hualapai Point.

Picture of the ticket building at Hualapai Point

Hardly anyone parks at Hualapai Point, so you should have a front-row parking spot. Then, go inside the Cabin Check-In building to get your tickets.

You can even catch the West Rim’s free shuttle from Hualapai Point.

But I recommend continuing to the main terminal and parking there instead. It’s usually easier to leave from that location once you’re done for the day.

Purchase Snacks (Or Pack A Meal) To Save Money

The West Rim requires a lot of energy, so you’ll need some nourishment to make it through the day.

But if you want to avoid paying $25 for a meal, there are some spots where you can get food that will fill you up – and save you some money, too.

One place is Skywalk Cafe, which is on the first floor of the Skywalk building at Eagle Point. The last time I was there, they had muffins, burritos, breakfast sandwiches, and ice cream.

Another option is to get à la carte items like mashed potatoes and corn on the cob at Guano Point. These often sell out, though, so I recommend getting there earlier in the day.

And then lastly, you can pack a lunch in your car and eat it in the parking lot. We did that one time, and it worked well.

But only pack a lunch if you plan on eating your food before entering. Otherwise, you’ll lose too much valuable time riding the shuttle back to the parking lot.

Book High-Demand Experiences Ahead Of Time

Reservations for the Zipline and Helicopter-Pontoon experiences are booked in one-hour increments, with only a few people allowed in each time slot.

Because of this, I recommend booking these attractions in advance.

That way, you can schedule your day before you go and avoid wasting time waiting around to do them. Or worse, finding out there is no availability when you go.

Get Your Tickets Now

Thanks for checking out my guide! If you’d like to help support my work, you can get tickets by clicking on the button below. Buying through my link is at no extra cost to you, so thank you very much if you do! ♡ Jenna

The lowest cost to visit Grand Canyon West is $51 for General Admission.

Adding other attractions increase the price, but the bundle deals offer significant savings.

If you do everything, you’re looking at $412 per person for the Grandest package and an add-on zipline ticket. (That’s the cheapest way I’ve found to do all the experiences.)

So, depending on your budget and what you want to do, a trip to the West Rim will cost between $51 to $412 per person, plus tax.

But you’ll also need to get some beverages and food while you’re there. I recommend budgeting an additional $20-$30 per person for that.

The Trans-Siberian Travel Tips

Get ready for your journey with our professional suggestions and enjoy the trip with ease and comfort.

Tips in Europe

What to pack

Pack comfortable pair of shoes and waterproof jacket, since some tours require walking for quite some time or spending time outdoors.

How much to tip

Tipping usually is up to you. Nobody expects tips from you in China, but it's polite to leave around 10% of the bill in Mongolia and Russia.

Russian climate is challenging to predict, and the weather can be windy and rainy, even during summers. Please check the weather beforehand.

When to travel

The Trans-Siberian journey is a tour requiring planning in advance. The best seasons are Summer and Late Spring, as the weather is sunny with fewer rains.

Please check the currency exchange rate beforehand. In Russia is Russian Ruble, in Mongolia - tugrik (you can change money for local currency straight upon arrival), in China - yuan.

Leave space in your luggage for famous souvenirs from each country: matryoshka and caviar from Russia, carpets and woolen sweaters from Mongolia, silk and green tea from China.

The Four Corners Tour combines the wide-open expanse of Arizona, the tranquil deserts of New Mexico, the rugged Colorado Rockies, as well as the majesty of Utah’s Monument Valley. Four Corners is named for the spot in the American Southwest where four states meet. It is an intersection not only of four states, but a meeting point of prehistoric landscapes, indigenous people, majestic mountains, and modern evolution—especially in terms of exceptional riding on well-maintained roads.

The Four Corners Blue Rim Tour offers an especially rare view of this great country’s diversity from the seat of a motorcycle. Exploring this region on two wheels provides a unique riding experience, allowing for a closer connection to its exquisite natural wonders and an appreciation for the natural beauty that transcends the dynamic—and sometimes harsh—landscape. From Monument Valley to the Rocky Mountains, and the Grand Canyon to White Sands National Monument, you will ride through a rich tapestry of American history for a truly memorable motorcycling experience.

As an added bonus the tour includes riding Colorado’s serpentine “Million Dollar Highway,” an idyllic motorcycle route, which snakes through the Rocky Mountains. With true million-dollar views, this 50-mile stretch starts in Durango, CO and winds its way through grand vistas of unequaled beauty and abandoned mining facilities, arriving in the quirky town of Ouray, the ice-climbing capital of the world.

Starting and ending in Albuquerque, New Mexico this 14-day vacation (of which eleven are full ride days) will traverse an amazingly full 2,050 miles, with ride days averaging a comfortable and leisurely 185 miles. The tour was specifically planned around a mild time of year, with average daytime temperatures of 80˚F, making for optimum riding weather. Join us for the adventurer’s essential American Southwest road trip.

Highlights :   Prague (Czech Republic), canoeing, medieval castles and architecture including several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Bamberg (Germany), Romantic Road (Austria), vineyard tour in Dürnstein (Austria), and much more!

Central Europe as it should be experienced; on a motorcycle, riding through quaint villages, lush countryside and farmland on the gloriously winding roads of Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Designed around a relaxed riding schedule to allow participants to savor the medieval castles and classic architecture, the Castles & Lakes Tour will make you fall in love with these countries renowned for their romantic splendor, sumptuous cuisine, centuries of historical significance and daunting beauty.

The Castles & Lakes Tour visits several UNESCO World Heritage sites as well as medieval castles and country roads. As a two-wheel enthusiast (undoubtedly with a desire for entertaining routes) you will ride the famed motorcyclist’s gem; the Romantic Road of Austria; a twisting two-lane road that winds its way through forests and countryside.

Specifically designed as a laid back and relaxed motorcycle travel vacation, the Castles & Lakes Tour combines riding with history, unraveling ancient architecture, balanced against plenty of riding and sightseeing; cities as well as open country and mountain passes. On non-riding rest days you can trade your motorcycle for a walking day trip of stunning Prague, and in the Czech Republic, go for a canoe ride. There will be opportunities for winery tours, sightseeing, or just relaxing.

The tour will cover plenty of miles over country roads, farmlands, and mountains, with overnight stays in small villages and city centers in 3- and 4-star accommodations, further reinforcing the old world aspect of these picturesque countries.

A support vehicle makes easy work of transporting luggage, avoiding the daily ritual of packing the bike, and multilingual tour guides ensure a safe and pleasant foreign experience. A choice of BMW motorcycle perfectly fits the Castles & Lakes Tour, with the German motorcycles having been developed specifically for this environment.

There is no better way to see this part of Europe than from the seat of a motorcycle. For that reason the Castles & Lakes Tour offers a commensurate luxury motorcycling experience that will leave you with a lifetime of memories.

Not Included in the Tour Price

Accommodations

The hotels are mostly family-owned and -operated and each has wonderful local flavor. They are three and four-star establishments, and all provide breakfast and dinner. You will feel welcome and at home right away. Some hotels have a pool or sauna, so bring your bathing suit, and all provide hair dryers. If you bring any electronic devices, remember that Europe has different voltage (220V) and electrical outlets, so make sure you have the right converters and plugs and that your electronic devices work on both voltages. Casual clothing to wear in the evenings is fine; there’s no need for formal wear.

Group minimum is six riders, maximum is ten riders plus passengers.

Roads and Traffic

Though riding an average of only 142 miles / 229 km per day may seem easy, don’t be deceived. Some roads are technical, narrow, and curvy, but overall it’s an easy route. If you have a good amount of riding experience, you’ll be able to master this trip.

Rental Bikes

Available motorcycles may be subject to change.

F 850 GS or GS/A

R 1250 GS or GS/A

Motorcycles are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, depending upon availability and are not guaranteed.

Keep in mind that smaller bikes handle much better on alpine roads! Great choices for a carefree, leisurely ride are the F 750 GS, F 850 GS or GS/A, and S 1000 XR. They handle very easily on the hairpins and still have enough power to keep up with anybody else on the mountain roads. The R 1250 GS is a good choice for two-up riding. Anything bigger (and heavier) takes away the pleasure of riding in the Alps. You may want to check out these bikes at your local dealer to see which one feels the most comfortable for you.

One piece of luggage per person will go on the support van. Tour members will be able to securely store suitcases and any other extra luggage in the first hotel of the trip. The motorcycles we provide for our tours are equipped with a luggage system.

The F 750 GS, F 850 GS or GSA, and S 1000 XR will have two side cases, while the R 1250 GS and GSA comes with two side cases and a top case. An electrical socket for GPS is available upon request. You will need to bring your own 12 V accessory Powerlet plug that fits the BMW/Euro-style socket.

The rental motorcycles are not equipped with tankbags. If you bring a tankbag, make sure that it uses straps and not magnets, which won’t work on the BMWs’ tanks.

Motorcycle  Insurance

The deductible for the motorcycle insurance included in your tour package is approximately $700, except R1250RT, S1000XR/RR and R18 the insurance is $1200. The actual amount may vary due to currency fluctuation. This amount is not charged or held to your card as we use an honor system with our guests. In case of minor damage to your motorcycle, an appraisal of the repair cost is made, based on the dealer’s cost, and billed to you with the understanding that you are responsible for up to $700 of damages. In case the cost of any damage to the motorcycle is higher than the deductible, or if the bike is stolen, the full deductible will be due. The insurance company will cover the remainder of the cost. Repair appraisals can take up to 6 months to receive from the dealer.

Temperatures will range between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 18 and 29 degrees Celsius. The altitude changes during the day’s ride, and the temperature changes accordingly. It can rain and be chilly on the mountain roads, yet be warm when you come down into the valleys. Dress in several layers so you can easily adjust to the weather conditions. In case of heavy rain or other bad weather, we will choose the shortest route to the next hotel, and avoid pass roads wherever possible.

Customer

My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. The planning & execution of both trips was well above our expectations. The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

A train on Trans-Siberian Railway

Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.
