Chicago born Richard Marx is a singer songwriter, and record producer who has sold upwards of 30 million records throughout his career. He was the first solo artist to have his first solo singles hit the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Marx’s career started aged 5, when he would sing jingles written by his father, who owned a commercial jingles company. It was when he was 17 that one of his demos ended up in the hands of Lionel Richie who invited Marx to sing on his debut solo album. Marx flew over to Los Angeles after his graduation to find himself singing on the songs “You Are”, “Running with the Night” and “All Night Long (All Night)”. His session singing career snowballed and he found himself singing for artists such as Madonna and Whitney Houston, which eventually turned into a songwriting career. He offered his song “Crazy” to Kenny Rogers, who recorded it, and also took the song “What About Me?” which featured the writing credits from James Ingram and Kim Carnes.

Marx finally released his eponymous debut album in June 1987, which would go on to sell almost four million copies in the US. The huge sophomore album “Repeat Offender” knocked Prince off the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200. The album would go triple platinum and eventually sold 5 million units in the US alone. It was the first two singles “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting” that went to number 1 in the Hot 100. He followed the success of this album with an international tour that included a visit to the Royal Albert Hall in London.

His third Platinum album “Rush Street” released on October 28th 1991 unfortunately didn’t quite achieve the success of the previous two albums, making it to number 35 in the Billboard 200 charts. Unfortunately, from the album “Flesh and Bone” released on April 8th 1997 until “Beautiful Goodbye” released on July 8th 2014, Marx chart success declined slightly, but it certainly didn’t have hinder on his biannually royalties check.

Live reviews

Richard Marx has been a billboard-topping, Grammy-winning hit-maker since the 1980s, as both a talented pop-rock writer/ musician in his own right, and with his songwriting- creating songs for huge acts such as Keith Urban’s Long Hot Summer, the N*Sync hit This I Promise You (remember them? That song was huge!) and Luther Vandross’ last hit record, Dance With My Father.

When I saw Marx at the elaborately ornate Shepherd’s Bush Empire venue in London in 2010, he played these songs, in his own impeccably classic style, and Dance With My Father was performed as a poignant tribute to a “dear absent friend”. The setting and atmosphere (picture lavish red velvet curtains and seats, Rococo-style statues adorning the walls, and gigantic chandeliers) really made the song feel all the more genuine and beautiful. The inclusion of a string orchestra in his live set further added to the epic sincerity of the experience of seeing Richard Marx live. His playful, witty audience shout-outs during the heart-wrenching ballad Angelia- “Come on, you all know the words to this one”; “This is where a guitar solo would go” (just before the song’s bridge)- injected humour and a closeness into the show, and added to the layered emotionality Marx is able to tap into and bring out of his audience.

With his timeless, classic approach to song composition and balladic numbers such as the (still-evocative) love songs Right Here Waiting and Beautiful Goodbye, Marx could, on paper, be plonked into the not-exaclty-favourable category of ‘dad-rock’ today. However, the sheer emotional force of his catchy, soaring hooks played out by a full string band, paired with his genuine superstar stage presence and husky yet sweetly sincere vocals, make seeing Marx live a truly incredible and emotive experience, that would stir the heartstrings of even the most stubbornly stoic hardballs in the audience. His songs (and vocal chords) have both definitely stood the test of time. You’ve gotta hand it to the man, he’s most certainly still got it- and trust me, it’s even better live.

We've seen him twice before and he was really good. Just him not his band. This was Aug 3 in Nashville at the grand ole Opry. We drove from central Ky. 250 miles one way. The show was cancelled! We never were given notice or anything....and no refund. We stayed the night in Nashville too. I've heard a lot of big names cancel their shows here as they're out on the road and need a break and this venue pays chump change.....so they axe it. Heads up if you come see a big name at this venue. You better check before you head this way. Marx is in LA tonight and Atl tmrw night so he axed this showing. So the alternative country show here we saw was about 7 misc country acts. Wasn't too bad, better than we expected it to be. Something diff than the 70s 80s bands we normally enjoy. So thumbs down for someone dropping the ball and not letting us know on the cancellation. talked to several other folk and they never received notice. Guess they still want us to come to Nashville and help the economy.

AMAZING! I think most people didn’t know that Marx had never played the Troubadour (including me) until he mentioned it during the show last night. Not only is he a great musical storyteller, he engages with his crowd; he’s funny, charming, and gives everyone everything he’s got. He’s always had this evocative, beautiful voice that makes you swoon. The audience was so into it, throughout the entire night. Halfway through the show, he was joined by two of his sons, who are pretty much as talented as their dad. So great :) What an awesome show.

Absolutely spectacular. He was wonderfully entertaining. Just Richard Marx on stage with a piano, his guitars and some candles. It was all he needed. The video screen behind him was a fun touch for him to show all kinds of pictures and a video of his sons playing their song with Richard singing along. His interaction with the audience was perfect and he was really funny. Something I didn't expect. The strand is a beautiful theater and it made the entire evening unforgettable. We are ready to go back and see Richard Marx again.

Amazing performance as always! He was sick and had a high fever but still managed to perform. His voice was great and he even told jokes. He and Rick Springfield were wonderful. They sang a couple of songs together at the end. It was a wonderful evening! I just wish it lasted a little longer. This is a must see tour!

He was funny and amusing. He played nothing but his hits for an hour and a half. It was a perfect venue, small and cozy. I love how he interacts with the audience and just had a good time playing.

Richard Marx

Richard Marx 4

When he was just five years old, Richard Marx was singing commercial jingles for his father’s advertising company in the early 60s. That was the start of a successful career, having sold over 30-million albums, numerous industry awards, and even some acting roles. Pretty amazing for an artist that, when he did decided to step out on his own, had his demo tape rejected by nearly every record label.

Obviously, the talent was in his genes. His father Dick Marx was a jazz pianist and arranger himself, with his greatest notoriety as a jingle producer creating iconic slogans such as Ken-L-Rations “My dog is better than your dog”; Wrigley’s gum “Double your pleasure, double your fun”; and Dial Soap’s “Aren’t you glad you use Dial”; as well as scoring movies including A League of Their Own, along with Edwards and Hunt. Growing up in that environment, the Highland Park native started writing his own material when he was just a teenage. When he was 17, a tape of Richard Marx’s songs ended up in the hands of Lionel Richie, who thought he had talent enough to move to Hollywood and pursue a career. After graduating from North Shore Country Day School in 1981, that’s just what Marx did.

In Hollywood, he started out singing backing vocals for various artists and getting some bit acting parts. In 1984 he was working with Kenny Rogers, who was looking for some new material. Marx went to work, writing two songs – “What About Me” and “Crazy”. Rogers recorded the first one with James Ingram and Kim Carnes, and it went to #1 on the adult contemporary charts and #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. The following year, “Crazy” went to #1 on the Billboard country charts.

Marx became firmly established as a songwriter, and he continued to do backing vocals, in hopes of reaching the spotlight with his own solo career. Four years after moving to Hollywood, and having his demo tape rejected by practically every record label, he finally signed a contract with EMI/Manhattan Records. Ironically, his debut single “Don’t Mean Nothing” was about the potential pitfalls of the music business. And it was his first hit, climbing to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In total, four singles off his debut self-titled album reached Top-10 status with “Hold On to the Nights” being his first #1 hit. The album went on to sell four-million copies and Marx was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance. The follow-up album Repeat Offender was even bigger, hitting #1, spawning two #1 hit singles and selling over five-million copies.

Good looks, and promotional videos in the era of MTV helped. And Marx went on to achieve a seven-year string of triumphs that rivals any in pop-rock music history. To this day, he is the only male artist in history to have his first seven singles reach Top-5 on the Billboard charts.

Marx married singer/actress Cynthia Rhodes in 1989, the couple having three children over the next five years. In 1994, Marx moved his family back to Lake Bluff on Chicago’s North Shore. He released the album Paid Vacation, which turned out to be his fourth consecutive platinum album. And in 1999, Marx opened Renegade Recording Studios in Chicago.

Over the years, Marx received a dozen Billboard Music Award nominations as well as Pollstar Concert Industry Award, Kids Choice Awards, American Music Awards, Grammy Awards, and ASCAP Film & TV Awards nominations. In 2004 the song he co-wrote with Luther Vandross “Dance with My Father” won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year.

Songwriting still in his blood, Marx continued the other part of his career as a songwriter and producer providing material for Josh Groban, NSYNC, Keith Urban, Jennifer Nettles and others. Across all formats Marx has scored an amazing total of 14 #1 singles.

In 2014, after 25 years of marriage, Richard and Cynthia divorces, with Marx marrying former MTV-VJ Daisy Fuentes the following year and relocating back to California.

Throughout Marx career, he has been very philanthropic. He donated the royalties from his single “Should’ve Known Better” to build a pediatric cancer facility at the NYU Medical Center. His single “Children of the Night” brought attention to the plight of homeless children in the streets and generated $1/2-million for the cause, raising over $4-million with benefit concerts for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He has taken his group overseas to entertain U.S. Troops, and hosts an annual event for the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

In his most recent project, Marx has reflected on one of his earlier albums with Repeat Offender Revisited (TourDForce/BMG) that includes both acoustic and live versions of various tracks form the original album.

Grammy award–winning recording artist and songwriter Richard Marx has joined the One805Live! fall concert line-up, a benefit concert put on by One805, a nonprofit organization aimed towards supporting fire, police, and sheriff first responders in Santa Barbara County.

Marx is best known for co-writing Luther Vandross’ “Dance with My Father,” which went on to win the Song of the Year Grammy in 2004. He has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, and is the only male artist in history whose first seven singles reached the Top 5 on the Billboard charts . Marx’s solo discography includes hits like “Now and Forever,” “Hold on to the Nights,” and “Right Here Waiting.”
