PGA Tour 2K21 tips with 8 essential things to know before you play

Master driving, putting and club selection with these PGA Tour 2K21 tips

putting tips pga tour 2k21

PGA Tour 2K21 tips have become essential once again following the news that rival game EA Sports PGA Tour is delayed indefinitely. Fancy picking up PGA Tour 2K21 at a budget price and building yourself into a virtual club-swinging phenomenon? Then all your key scouting intel can be found below, right down to intricate strategic details such as understanding wind and use of the Scout Cam. Don't tee off until you've fully mastered these eight vital PGA Tour 2K21 tips.

1. Swing straight

putting tips pga tour 2k21

The very first thing you need to do is master your swing. To the bottom right of the screen, you will see a white bar (Swing Plane) that highlights the straightness of your drive. Spending time at the practice range is so important in making sure you master this skill. If you are facing a heavy wind resistance, a precise swing can be the difference between landing on the fairway or drifting into the rough. Pulling back on your chosen analogue stick is the backswing and pushing up is the downswing. Doing this as straight as possible provides the most accurate shot.

2. Time your swing correctly

putting tips pga tour 2k21

Another important aspect of your swing is getting the timing right. If your downswing is too fast, you hook the ball and reduce the power of the shot. Hitting the ball too slowly slices the ball, and overpowers your shot. Again, if you are not familiar with PGA Tour 2K21’s controls, spend time at the practice range to get this down to a tee (no pun intended).

3. Scout Cam is your friend

putting tips pga tour 2k21

The most useful tool in PGA Tour 2K21 is the Scout Cam. Pressing Triangle/Y before every shot automatically moves the camera to where the ball is going to land. The point of impact can affect every shot you take, so scouting the area makes a difference to your next move. You can assess whether the ground is flat or uneven, and whether there are any obstacles you need to avoid, such as a bunker, tall grass, or a body of water.

4. Pay attention to the wind

putting tips pga tour 2k21

At the top of your screen, you can see the direction of the wind, as well as the speed in which it is travelling. If you are facing a heavy gust, your shot will blow away from your chosen landing spot, so it is vital you take the effects of Mother Nature into account. For example, if the wind is blowing in from the right at 8mph, hit the ball a couple of feet to the right so that the wind carries it to the spot you initially intended the ball to land on.

5. Make use of True Shot

putting tips pga tour 2k21

One of the best tools at your disposal is True Shot. By pressing and holding L1/LB, you activate True Shot, and from here you get a couple of options to refine your shot. If you are facing a protruding tree branch and need to ‘bend’ your shot, you can move the left trigger to apply draw or fade, essentially bending the curve around the obstacle so that you avoid hitting it. Not only that, but in True Shot you can adjust the angle by moving the left trigger up or down, meaning a high arch stops the ball from gliding across the fairway or putting green upon its landing. A more direct angle moves the ball further when it lands.

6. Putt to perfection

putting tips pga tour 2k21

A myriad of factors can cause a putting attempt to miss the hole. Wind speed is one of them, as is the angle of the ground, and the distance from the ball to the hole. The most useful tool is the ability to watch the path of the ball, and you can do this by holding in X/B. This shows where the ball is likely to end up, as a white line simulates your shot. If it ends up a few inches away from the hole, you know to hit it slightly to the left or right, and if the ball is going to end up falling just short, you can increase the power of your shot by moving the right trigger forward.

7.  Tailor the difficulty to suit you

putting tips pga tour 2k21

PGA Tour 2K21 has a wide range of difficulty options, meaning you can customise exactly how much help you receive when playing. HB Studios has made sure your experience is as satisfying as it can be by including the ability to adjust various settings to tailor its difficulty. You can make swinging more challenging by decreasing the scale of timing and power. The option to remove the Scout Cam and Lie Grid takes away the information you have on the terrain, and disabling various Pro Vision options means you can’t activate True Shot or include the Shot Suggestion.

8. Manage your Golf Bag

putting tips pga tour 2k21

Whilst there are a range of different shots to get your head around, picking the right clubs in your Golf Bag is just as important. Throughout your career, new clubs unlock, and you can spend Virtual Currency on a range of drivers, sand wedges, putters, and more. Pay close attention to the stats because they make a huge difference once you are on the course. Clubs with better Forgiveness allow for more error when swinging, improved Shot Shaping gives you wider draw and fade distances, and better Distance Control provides more range in your shots.

PGA Tour 2K21: Beginner’s guide to putting – Controls, tips, and more

Image of Chris Studley

If there’s one part of golf that is critical to master, it’s putting. Sure, you might be able to dominate with a driver and club the ball 300+ yards off a tee, but if the putting is bad, your score is going to be bad as well. Just like with real golf, putting is critical in PGA Tour 2K21. Knowing how to do so properly can be a boon for your virtual golfing career, but failing to master it could lead to failure.

With that said, let’s go over our tips to get you started with putting in PGA Tour 2K21.

Don’t worry about the putter model

The first thing you might consider doing when starting up PGA Tour 2K21 is grinding in order to upgrade your putter. That, however, is not really necessary. Putters are different from other clubs in PGA Tour 2K21, as all the models that are in the game do not have any attributes. Because of this, you won’t really need to worry about which putter you have in 2K21. Of course, you can buy a new one, but there are more important things to worry about.

Know the controls

Just like with driving, you will use either the left or right stick, depending on which stick you picked, to putt the ball. To aim the shot, use whichever stick you don’t use to putt to aim the shot, much like you would with driving. And just like with driving, there will be a bar at the bottom that will indicate how much power you are currently scheduled to putt at.

To hit the perfect amount of power, shift the stick you are using to putt until it hits the white marker, and then shift up. Also, if you’re looking to modify the amount of power (or Putt Weight, whichever name you prefer), shift the stick that you are not using to putt either up (to increase power) or down (to decrease power).

Get the ball as close to the green

Let’s be honest, you probably want putting to be easy. The best way to make putting easy has nothing to do with the act itself, but rather what you do before you make it to the green. When you’re on the fairway (or the rough, if it’s a bad day), make sure to use the aim to get the ball as close as you can to the cup. Keep in mind, though, that you will have to watch which way the wind is blowing. For example, if the wind is blowing from right to left, you might want to move the aim to the right in order to anticipate the ball blowing to the left side of the green.

Longer putts are always going to be harder than shorter putts, so making sure that you are as close to the green as you can be should set you up for future success.

Watch for the hills

Every green in golf differs from course to course , and the trickiest ones are those that feature hills. The reason for this is twofold: putts can veer to the left or right, depending on the type of hill, and the amount of power that you will need to successfully finish the hole can vary. Let’s focus on that latter point for a second: if the cup is located on the top of a hill, you will need to use more power to finish the putt. But if the cup is on flat ground, and a hill is in between your path, use less power, since the decline of the hill will roll the ball towards the hole. This is something you will need to keep in mind when making a putt.

Let’s get back to the first point. Putts can veer to the left or to the right, depending on the terrain of the green. To know how to play the putt, look at the dots on the Green Grid. Shift the aim depending on what direction the dots are moving so that you can successfully complete the putt.

putting tips pga tour 2k21

Don’t always follow the recommendations

When attempting a putt, 2K21 will give you a recommendation with regards to where the putt should be aimed, as well as what power you should use. These recommendations are fine in the beginning, but you shouldn’t use these as a be-all, end-all as you gain experience in the game. After playing the same course multiple times, you’ll often find that the recommendations are often flawed, so keep tabs as to how each course plays. The last thing you want is to miss a putt you should hit with ease.

Remember your tendencies

In order to hit a putt perfectly straight, you must shift the putting stick down, and then directly up in a straight line. However, doing this repeatedly is tough. The thing to remember, however, is that putting can become a lot easier if you notice your tendencies. To elaborate, suppose you notice that you are prone to pushing up a bit to the right with consistency, and the ball repeatedly slices to the right of the cup. If you can pick this out, then simply adjust the aim to the left to compensate. That way, you can make up for this tendency and better prepare yourself at upcoming holes.

However, don’t follow these guidelines at every hole. If an upcoming hole has a hill you may need to contend with, that will also affect the putt.

Remain calm

While it would be nice to hit every putt that you are going to make, that’s impossible to do. Even professional golfers can’t make every putt that is attempted. However, you need to approach each hole as if you are a pro golfer. Professional golfers are masters at staying composed, and it’s vital that you should too. Being nervous before making a big putt is useless, as all that will do is make it harder to hit the perfect amount of power. Just relax, and the game will become much easier.

PGA TOUR 2K21 beginner's guide

PGA Tour 2K21 Beginner's Guide

Image of Kevin Scott

There are some video games you spend months eagerly anticipating before snagging them at the absolute earliest moment possible, and then there are others you might be perfectly content to wait for until they go on sale — or even become a free monthly game on the PlayStation Network for those with a PS Plus subscription . With PGA Tour 2K21 now free for the rest of October, it seems like a good idea to put together a PGA Tour 2K21 beginner’s guide for those who are now going to check it out.

For those who are willing to give the game a shot, there are some things that might be good to know before you leave the clubhouse and head out for the first tee. Here’s a helpful overview of what you can expect from PGA Tour 2K21 and some helpful hints on how to make the most of your experience so you don’t end up tossing an iron into the nearest water hazard and heading for the parking lot before you even reach the back nine.

PGA Tour 2K21 MyPlayer

Embrace Your MyPlayer

If you’re starting out in PGA Tour 2K21 and are excited about the opportunity to take control of some of the real golfers that you regularly see play on the PGA Tour, then you might want to take a seat and brace for some bad news. While you’re able to play against actual pros in tournaments, you’re only ever able to use the MyPlayer golfer that you create when you first load up the game. This is bound to be disappointing for some, but at least there’s plenty you can do to customize your own golfers to make them as unique as possible using various physical attributes within the creation suite.

As for the abilities that you’ll use on the course, you’ll notice that there’s no way to shape your own specific strengths and weaknesses like you would in other sports titles like NBA 2K22 and there’s a decent reason for this. That’s because all golfers in PGA Tour 2K22 are created equal, at least from a physical standpoint, ensuring a level playing field where success or failure rests solely on your own skills with the controller. This will sadly dash the plans of anyone who had plans of creating some beefy powerhouse capable of driving the ball for miles (and maybe lacking a little something in the putting department), but it’s ultimately more of a feature than a bug that you can focus instead on learning to consistently hit good shots.

PGA Tour 2K21 customization

Dress For Success

Though it’s necessary to accept the limitations in how far you can hit the ball, PGA Tour 2K21 does offer an interesting element of strategy in what clubs you want to carry with you on the course. If you want to pack the driver with the biggest punch, you’ll also have to be prepared for a smaller margin of error when controlling those shots to find the fairway with any consistency. All clubs have their own inherent quirks, so don’t be afraid to try out different ones from time to time to see how they work for you.

Because you can only carry so many clubs in your bag, there are bound to be some gaps in their distances, and it’s up you to assess what you consider to be the highest priorities, whether that’s having more woods, irons, or wedges. Aside from selecting types of clubs, you can then also add some flair to them by adding colors and designs to the shafts and grips.

pga tour 2k21 online

Speaking of flair, don’t sleep on all of the amazing threads available to you. With options ranging from stylish to downright silly, you’ll find no shortage of recognizable brands and places to put them on your body, from the hats on the top of your head right down to the socks and shoes on your feet.

It doesn’t matter whether you want to compete looking like a million bucks or just want to be that guy who wears a pumpkin on his head (’tis the season after all), the game’s shop has you covered. It’s been long enough after the game’s release now for the sheer amount of attire to be slightly overwhelming and there’s still the occasional addition from time to time depending on the season.

PGA Tour 2K21 swing help

Stick Your Shots

Let’s face it, there are some people who will never be able to accept anything other than a three-click system when it comes to hitting the ball in a golf game. This is likely because that’s what they came to love back when they were playing Tiger Woods games on a PS2 (and that’s fine). They’ll be upset to learn that not only are you not able to use anything other than one of the sticks to hit your shots in PGA Tour 2K21 , but the game also eschews the kind of arcade-style play from those older games that allowed you to put backspin on the ball while a ball was in the air in favor of something closer to a simulation.

Ultimately, the tempo and angle at which you push the stick down and up will be the biggest deciding factor in what happens to every shot you make, so take the time to calibrate your swing and learn how to get optimal results while on the driving range. There are also other factors to consider, and these are the same sorts of things that you’d want to bear in mind in real life, such as your lie, the wind in play, and whether you happen to be standing on any sort of significant slope at all.

When it comes to putting, reading the break of a green and negotiating the proper amount of power will help you immensely, and it will take some time and practice to develop a feel for how putts from various distances will move as they approach the hole.

Career Opportunities

For those who want to pit their skills against those aforementioned real pros, PGA Tour 2K21 has a career mode where you can do just that, allowing you to start out on the lesser Korn Ferry Tour until you’re ready to be promoted to the real PGA Tour alongside greats like cover star Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau (though you’ll have to wait until the next title in the series to see Tiger Woods).

This functions well enough in that you feel as if you’re really competing against the titans of the sport that you enjoy watching on the weekends. However, even with some tweaking of the mode’s settings, you may find that there are still some issues with balancing the other scores on the leaderboard so you’re not always running away from the pack. It would also be nice if the game were to implement a tiebreaker at the end of events should two or more golfers end up tied at the end of the final round.

Fortunately, there are other ways to extend your career beyond playing only against CPU players if you’re searching for even more of a challenge and are curious to see how you’ll do against other humans. Online Societies that have been created by other players allow you to participate in regularly scheduled events (if they’re a good and reliable society at least) to see if you can achieve the best score.

Aside from the thrill of learning how you measure up compared to others, you can also earn some coin rewards depending on how many others have played and where you finish. If you want to take this concept to the next level, you may want to consider joining the TGC Tours , a website that organizes weekly events, compiles scores from across all platforms, and can see you getting promoted or demoted across various flights based on how you finish.

PGA Tour 2K21 online societies

Online Head-To-Head Play

If you’re someone who would rather any online play be done head-to-head against opponents so you can witness their shots and determine clear winners and losers at the end of the round, PGA Tour 2K21 has plenty of options that will satisfy most of your needs. Aside from your basic one-on-one matches, you can also expand your horizons to include some of the more adventurous online playlists like skins matches, alt shot with pairs, or even the Divot Derby mode that has you playing speed golf against 19 other players. It can be frustrating when people quit in the middle of rounds as they begin to sense losing is imminent, but assuming the game correctly registers your victory, it can be another way to earn some coins that you can use to continue buying new clothes, clubs, and accessories.

A bigger issue is that PGA Tour 2K21 doesn’t have any sort of tiers or levels that you either ascend or descend depending on your result — something you see in a game like Rocket League — thereby making matchmaking something of a crapshoot and minimizing the consequences of each round that you play. If the next title in the series could figure out how to institute something like this, it would go a long way towards having you feel as if there’s more incentive to play these online modes. This would allow you to be confident that you will face someone roughly on your skill level and that there would be a little more on the line than perhaps winning or losing some relatively inconsequential coins.

Course Creator

As someone who has never actually designed any courses in PGA Tour 2K21 , I may not be able to give you any tips on the best way to go about doing that, but I can tell you that many others seem to be really good at it. Aside from the game’s official real courses that have been recreated in painstaking detail, one of the best things about the game is the sheer volume of amazing courses that people have made within the game and are available for anyone to play.

From wild fictional fantasy courses to innovative mini-putt layouts to gorgeous renderings of real-life courses both famous and obscure, there’s never any shortage of fun ones to try out. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all of the choices, TGC Tours can help you out as they maintain and regularly update a list of courses that have met the rigorous criteria for use in their events, so you know they have to at least be halfway decent.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf Renamed To Veilguard, Gameplay Reveal Next Week

Paper mario's vivian embodies two decades of pure trans joy, silent hill 2 remake devs resisted changes from original creators.

The creators of the original  The Golf Club,  HB Studios,   has partnered with 2K Studios and the PGA league to produce PGA Tour 2K21 , the first installment of a series that will hopefully last for years to come . The game was released on August 21st, 2020.

RELATED:  5 Things That WWE 2K21 Needs To Fix (& 5 Things To Keep From 2K20)

The alternately-named chapters that led to  PGA Tour 2K21  were quality games but riddled with shortcomings, such as the lack of a putt power meter. However, in the newest game, many features of gameplay have been greatly improved . Here are some tips to cut some strokes off of your score.

10 Chipping Smart

The default shot a player is given when chipping on the green is meant to set up an easy 'up-and-down' putt. Thus, a player will automatically be shooting a chip that will  not  have a chance of landing in the hole.

If a player wants to try and 'hole-out' from their position off of the green with their chip, they are going to have to either extend the distance of the chip or club up. Make sure to anticipate the slight bounce following the ball's initial impact accordingly. Stronger clubs will have larger bounces so make sure the point of impact is an appropriate distance in front of the cup.

9 Plan Accurate Approaches

Depending on which club you use to approach the green, whether it be from the tee-box, fairway, rough, or bunker, a player needs to anticipate the resulting roll of the ball following impact. With lower irons and woods (lower meaning more powerful), a player may be wise to have their approach shot's point of impact on the fairway just before the fringe of the green, in order to give proper space for the ball to roll.

RELATED:  10 Best Super Mario Sport Games, Ranked (According To Metacritic)

On the other hand, with wedges and higher irons, there will be less roll and bounce after the point of impact. So, a player should aim their approach shots closer to the hole. A player should rarely aim directly for the pin unless it is a way of compensating for head-on wind.

8 Use Putt Previews Wisely

The putt preview is a terrific tool to use when first starting out. It allows a beginner to learn how slopes in the green affect the line of a putt, and it helps to avoid three-putt frustration. However, the putt preview function can also be considered as a crutch that is capping a player's skill and ability to improve.

There are no putt previews in online matchmaking. In order to not use putt previews as a crutch, players should only use them when they are completely necessary. For instance, use a preview when your final ranking is on the line or if a putt is absurdly long.

7 Use Clubs With Higher Forgiveness

Although the clubs players eventually unlock have better distance, shot shaping, and other attributes, most of the higher grade clubs have lower forgiveness. This metric represents how affected a player's shot will be by their swing speed.

For example, if a player has a slow swing, then their intended shot will be more harshly punished. So, a player should stick to clubs with higher forgiveness until they become more consistent with their swing speed execution.

6 Use 3 Wood Out Of Sand If Possible

A shot out of the sand with a 3 wood may have a point of impact of slightly less distance than say a shot with a 5 iron. However, the resulting roll of a 3 wood shot makes it so the overall distance of the shot is considerably farther than that of the alternative 5 iron shot.

RELATED:  Every NBA 2K Game Of The 2010s, Ranked From Worst To Best (According To Metacritic)

Nevertheless, if a player in the sand clubs up to a 3 wood and they see their expected distance is something like 3 yards, then they shouldn't take the shot because the ball won't make it out of the bunker. If it is a considerably deep sandpit go with the iron, but if it is relatively flat, then the 3 wood is the better choice.

5 Don't Add Max Arc

By holding the left trigger, players can alter the arc, fade, draw, and spin of a shot. If the wind is heavy, players should be careful of how much arc they put on a shot. The more arc a shot has, the more affected it will be by the wind.

Additionally, it is very easy to overcompensate the arc of a shot, which results in players having too shallow of an approach and too long of a putt. If a player decides to add arc, it's best to set it about halfway to three-quarters of the way up the scale.

4 Always Check Driver Shot In Tee Box If Default Club Is 'Higher'

In the image above, the player is automatically given a 3 wood in this hole's tee box, although the fairway is relatively wide and straight and could handle the distance of a driver. PGA Tour 2K21  frequently defaults to shots that avoid risk, but that gives players less birdy and eagle opportunities.

Therefore, it is smart to at least check what a shot with a driver or other 'lower' option may look like. Frequently, a shot with a driver can be highly beneficial to your score although it isn't the default suggestion.

3 Upgrade Driver ASAP

There are so many holes in PGA Tour 2k21  where a smidgen more distance on your drive can be the difference between a shot in the bunker and an ace. Therefore, players should look to upgrade their drivers as soon as possible.

However, drivers with longer distance most often come with lower forgiveness ratings. Players need to get consistent with their drive's swing speed before making an upgrade. Nevertheless, the drive is potentially the easiest type of shot in the game to master.

2 Be Wary Of Suggested Putt Power Percentage On Declines In Green

When facing a downward sloping green while putting, players need to be extra careful to not overpower their shot. Putting down a decline comes with different risks than putting up an incline.

For instance, when a player putts with slightly more power than is suggested against an incline, they will still have a chance of landing in the hole. On the contrary, if the player hits the ball with less  power than suggested, the ball will have zero chance of landing in the hole and will stop in front of the cup. On a declined putt, the reverse is true: too much power equals an almost definite miss while too little power can still lead to a successful putt.

1 Dress Well

The phrase "90% of feeling good, is looking good" is surely relevant to a player's performance in  PGA Tour 2K21.  With the game's abundance of clothing options , players should seek out the perfect outfit for their individual style.

Having their virtual golfer swagged out, or dressed in a funny costume, can help players enjoy the game, even though a triple-bogey. Less frustration equals less strokes.

PGA Tour 2K21: Tips to help you on the professional links

PGA Tour 2K21: Tips to help you on the professional links

The PGA Tour experience on Switch

PGA Tour 2K21 is the newest professional golf game on the market, taking over the golf gaming scene since the sudden ending (?) to the longtime EA Sports Tiger Woods/Rory McIlroy PGA Tour series . It started all the way back in 2014 when The Golf Club was first created by HB Studios as an indie title.

Since then, the once independent developer who sometimes worked with EA, struck a partnership with 2K, and thus, The Golf Club 2019 Featuring the PGA Tour was born. And now, the name reflects some of 2K's other sports titles with the name PGA Tour 2K21.

The game features real-world courses and many that are designed by the community including some excellent recreations of actual courses such as Pebble Beach, St. Andrews, and Pine Valley. And with the PGA Tour in-play, you can expect a solid presentation on the course. Here are a few tips for you before you tee it up on the Nintendo Switch.

Use Putt Preview

putting tips pga tour 2k21

One of the biggest things I hear players having trouble with is the putting, so we'll focus on this first. It's also probably the most important part of real and video game golf. It's the one area of the sport where you truly score because you're putting the ball in the hole.

But in PGA Tour 2K21, putting can seem tricky at first. Thankfully, there is a great feature that can help you improve your game on the greens. It's called Putt Preview and it might seem familiar because it has been in some of the Tiger Woods games in the past.

But with PGA 2K focusing on being as realistic as possible, using putt preview is a great way to sort of giving you some training wheels early on. After that, feel free to turn the feature off or just stop using it, and see how things go out there. Putting will feel more natural to you once you use the putt previews and get comfortable with reading grids. Now get out there and drill some putts.

Practice Club Selection

One thing that can have a dramatic effect on your virtual golf game is club selection. Choosing the best club possible for certain situations can make or break your performance on a hole. This is especially true on approach shots, with the green in sight.

Most of the time, you are given the best club to use for each shot. However, this isn't always accurate so sometimes you have to switch things up. Definitely try and pay attention to the wind. This is the ultimate reason why you'd swap clubs.

Depending on the direction of the wind and how strong it is, you may need to club up or down to fit the situation. Getting familiar with different clubs and paying close attention to the wind will have you hitting some great approach shots in no time.

Get Comfrotable With The Short Game

There are going to be many instances where you find yourself short of the green or over it. This leaves you with the chance to go for a chip shot. Sometimes, you hit a great second on a par-5 but find yourself a good 45-50 yards short of the green. This is is where pitch and flop shots come in to play.

This family of shots is all part of the short game aspect of golf. And the key to mastering this art in PGA Tour 2K21 is by judging your touch. It's similar to putting in that touch is everything. Zoom in to the flag and see where your marker is. If you're in the rough, you might want to move your aim marker further back to generate more power.

If you're hitting from the fairway, you can get away with being lighter on your shots. If you're 35-40 yards out, then I highly recommend using a flop shot. This shot is a beast when executed properly. With the right amount of touch, you can see your ball land just a few feet from the hole. This is because the shot pops your ball up in the air, preventing it from rolling too far if hit too hard.

Don't get me wrong, you can still hit your flops too hard if you aren't careful. However, it will stop pretty quickly, saving you the extra long putt.

PGA TOUR 2K21 Review – The Perfect Putter

PGA TOUR 2K21 is without a doubt the most accessible golf simulation game currently on the market offering newbies, golf experts, and sports enthusiasts alike challenging yet fun experiences to keep them coming back for more. Having played other golf games in the past such as Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12 , I know firsthand about the struggles associated with playing sports games that require patience and precision. HB Studios has succeeded in creating a core golfing title that’s easy for anyone to pick up and play. Before sharing more of my impressions, let’s dive into some brief history behind this series.

On April 19th, 2014, HB Studios released the very first entry in The Golf Club series. After the launch of two sequels in 2017 and 2018 respectively, 2K Sports took over the publishing rights and rebranded the series name to PGA TOUR 2K . This year’s game marks the second title under the 2K banner and with that comes the expectation of more features and improvements over the previous games.

PGA TOUR 2K21

When I started playing PGA TOUR 2K21 for the very first time, I was immediately thrown into a few objective-based tutorials for swing input, putting, clubs, and shot types. These tutorials are designed to familiarize players with all the info they need to start playing 18-course matchups. Using the Xbox One X controller, the controls may sound complex but are pretty straightforward and consist of the following:

  • Use the Left Stick to adjust shot direction left or right. Moving up or down allows you to adjust shot power.
  • Pulling the Right Stick back then forward allows you to swing the club.
  • Using the D-Pad allows you to switch between the different clubs and shot types.
  • Using the Left Bumper and Left Stick allows you to adjust your fade and draw. Using the Left Bumper with the Right Stick allows you to adjust your launch angle.
  • Using the Right Bumper allows you to reset your shot.
  • Pressing the Y button allows you to preview your shot and fast forward.
  • Pressing the B button allows you to view the map of the golf course.
  • Pressing the X button lets you remove the flag/Pin when putting
  • Pressing the A button lets you skip past animations and replays.

One thing that I especially love about how these tutorials are set up is that you have the option of skipping over them and immediately jumping right into the action. Even when you are on the field, you’ll be given a recommended shot and club type to use in every scenario and still be able to freely choose what tools suit you best. Playing in real-time truly is the best way to learn these controls and once you get comfortable, you’ll find out fairly quickly that you can adjust accordingly to any and every obstacle thrown your way.

PGA TOUR 2K21

After completing the basics and some advanced shot tutorials, I was then given the ability to create my character and start my PGA TOUR career. The MYPLAYER creation options are pretty standard from what you can expect from most sports games with the inclusion of licensed apparel and equipment from well-known brands like Polo Ralph Lauren and Callaway Golf. You can also customize your Golf Bag by deciding which 14 clubs to take with you across various events. As you play through your career, you earn currency and unlock new gear and accessories. While there aren’t any microtransactions, using the earned currency means that you may need to do some serious grinding in order to unlock every outfit and club that the game has to offer.

When it comes to the PGA Tour career mode, you can kick things off by choosing one of four options including Q-School, The Korn Ferry Tour, The Korn Ferry Tour Championship, or The PGA TOUR season. Every event you enter has a set number of criteria you’ll need to complete in order to participate and some of these are tied to sponsor goals that could lead to unlocked rewards and higher payouts if successfully completed. I would highly recommend starting a new PGA TOUR season right away as it’s the best way to experience the competitive nature of the sport in all its glory.

PGA TOUR 2K21

For starters, entering into the PGA TOUR throws you right into the fire of career rivalries with other players. In these encounters, your performance is essentially measured against another opponent randomly chosen based on your stats and if you outplay them then you’ll earn additional currency. If there is one criticism that I do have about this feature it lies within the fact that you can’t choose who to start a rivalry with and there is no evidence of a back and forth between you and another player outside of the stats themselves. How the NBA 2K series handles upcoming matchups by implementing verbal trash talk and commentary over social media from fans and players alike adds more weight to these rivalries and I would love for a similar approach to be considered within future games in this franchise too.

Another bonus to playing the PGA TOUR straight away is that you’ll notice there’s slightly more emphasis on the presentation in these events as you’ll see key highlights from other players during your own rounds. Finally, the overall structure of this seasonal option means an underdog has a greater chance of working his or her way up the ranks and earning the top prize. In other words, you could start out the season playing poorly and gradually improve your game over a large stretch of events to the point where you’ll gain confidence and become a top contender. This goes back to the point I made earlier about picking up and playing regardless of how skillful you are as you’ll definitely learn and improve faster this way as opposed to spending time going through every tutorial.

PGA TOUR 2K21

Going back to the presentation, PGA TOUR 2K21 does a decent job of representing the world of professional golfing. The commentary team for every event consists of Play-by-Play Anchor Luke Elvy, Analyst Rich Beem and On Course Correspondent John McCarthy. The game also includes a pro roster of 12 golfers headlined by Justin Thomas and 15 in-game licensed TPC courses. As with any sports game that has commentary, dialogue can become very repetitive very quickly, and unfortunately, that is the case here too. It would be great if additional commentators or retired pro golfers could be added as more options in future installments of the series as it can keep things fresh for players.

Each realistic and beautifully designed course looks absolutely stellar. Player character models look decent too most of the time but I’m definitely hoping that they can be further improved upon when PGA TOUR 2K22 or PGA TOUR 2K23 rolls around. With next-gen consoles on the horizon and Visual Concepts’ track record of stepping in to help on other 2K sports franchises in the past, it would be interesting to see what additional resources they could offer to help make this the best-looking golf game out there. Only time will tell if 2K and HB Studios actually pursue these options but in the meantime, the game still looks great on the surface.

PGA TOUR 2K21

Aside from playing the PGA TOUR Career mode, other features include Course Designer , Play Now Local Matches, and Online. As the name suggests, Course Designer lets you create courses from a various array of objects and share them with your friends. The layout holes are generated for you in the very beginning but you can edit them accordingly and playtest your creation afterward. If there is one thing that I would love to see implemented in future games it would be the ability a create your own golf clubs. Given the customization options available to your player, this just seems like a cool addition that could be in a future game. With that said, Course Designer is a solid feature and will certainly add a great deal of replay value to this year’s game.

When playing online, you can participate in private matches and Online Societies . There is a matchmaking system in place to assure that you’re playing someone on your skill level. The real fun however lies within Online Societies as you can either create or join a group and participate in competitive matches set up by you or the creator of the group. I was able to try this feature out briefly and didn’t experience any connection issues. It is worth noting though that this experience may vary on launch day once more players have populated the servers so we will see if it maintains stability at that time.

PGA TOUR 2K21

In a nutshell, PGA TOUR 2K21 is a great entry in the franchise and successfully pays homage to a sport/hobby beloved by many. While I do believe that the series can be improved upon in certain areas, there is no denying that HB Studios is on the right path with their vision. If you love golf or are even remotely interested in the sport, then you owe it to yourself to give this game a try as soon as possible.

This review was written based on a digital review copy of PGA TOUR 2K21 for the Xbox One X provided by HB Studios and 2K Games.

Starfield is Proof That Bethesda Should No Longer Skip One Launch Feature

Rumor: big metal gear solid 3 remake news could be coming this week, two hit square enix jrpgs have shadow dropped on playstation and xbox.

There has been a shortage of golf titles in the past decade. The last Tiger Woods game was released more than seven years ago. Rory McIlroy's PGA game was a flop, and neither EA or 2K have released a golf video game in six years. The Golf Club (TGC) and The Golf Club 2/2019 were the only popular golf titles released since 2015.

RELATED:  Toonami Review Gives PGA 2K21 a 8/10

It makes sense that the developers of  PGA 2K21  would be using the same engine as TGC  . The game has proven to be  a huge sales hit , which is good news for golfers. The mechanics, controls, and nuances of the game are almost exactly the same as TGC . Those that have not played TGC will want to incorporate the following basic tips to dominate the competition in 2K21 .

8 Swing Path And Tempo Matter

Unlike older golf games, 2K21 uses a swing system that rewards accuracy as well as timing. Players will want to keep the cursor within the white swing path line on the screen to avoid hitting a hook or slice. Likewise, moving the stick back or forward too quickly will alter the shot. Good tempo involves a slightly slower backswing and a controlled flick of the stick forward.

RELATED:  PGA TOUR 2K21: More Courses That Could be Added to the Game

  • Focus on keeping the stick on a vertical plane
  • Slower backswing and controlled flick forward

7 The Pinch Method

One way to increase control while moving the right stick is to use a two-finger method. Pinching the stick between the pointer finger and thumb can help some people with swing path control. It is not for everyone, but the method can minimize the severity of a miss hit. Players that are having trouble hitting the ball straight should give it a try. Perhaps there is another variation of the technique that will work even better, but you don't know until you try.

6 Know The Green And Fairway Firmness

Playing without knowing the firmness of the course is a classic rookie mistake. Just like in real life, firm greens and fairways impact the strategy of a golfer on the course. On soft greens, gamers can go right at the hole and the ball will sit nicely. On firmer courses, the ball will roll out if hit with any club that is not a wedge. Firm fairways have the same effect. The ball will roll out a lot further, which may increase the chances of rolling into a bunker or hazard. There are plenty of challenging courses  with very firm surfaces in 2K21 .

5 Pay Attention To The Power Indicator

Club Selection matters when hitting from any surface that isn't the fairway. The first cut of rough will reduce the distance the ball will travel. Sand will limit the distance the ball will go, and heavy rough will make the ball travel about 50% less than from the fairway. The shot projection does not factor in the reduced range when hitting the ball off of different surfaces. Gamers will need to look out for wind and elevation changes too, as they will alter the flight path of the ball.

4 Utilizing Different Shots

Every club has a few different shot choices. For example, players can punch, pitch, and flop many of the clubs in the game. Punches are great for recovery shots and advancing the ball when there is an obstruction in the flight path. Pitch shots are great in strong winds or when between clubs. Gamers can hit flop shots with wedges to get close to the hole when within 100 yards. Flop shots are great on courses with little wind, but they are harder to hit than a standard shot. It should also be noted that the difficulty of a shot correlates to how large the shot path is at the center of the screen. A small while line means that the swing will have to be precise for a successful shot.

3 Why The Putting Indicator Is Not Reliable

Gamers are given a power target while putting, which is supposed to represent the perfect amount of power needed to make a putt. However, this assumes the player is also aiming on the perfect line. If the line is too wide, or too close to the hole, the ball will not go in. This is just like putting in real life.

RELATED:  PGA 2K21 Adds Mode That Lets Players Bet Virtual Money

Users will want to follow that indicator when there is very little break in the putt. On difficult winding putts, it is probably better to read the green and estimate the line. Blindly following the power meter will result in a lot of missed putts.

2 Declare An Unplayable

PGA 2k21 is a fun game, but it is by no means bug-free. Players can get caught in impossible scenarios where the ball is stuck under a tree, rock, or even the stands. In the pause menu, there is an option to declare an unplayable and hit a shot from farther back in the fairway. Some of the courses have forested areas that are so thick no one can hit a shot back into the fairway. Desert hazards are just as tricky, and new players will waste their time incurring a lot of strokes trying to hit a recovery shot.

1 Approach Shots

When hitting an approach to the green with an iron or wedge, reading the contours of the greens is important. The white lines show which direction the green is sloping, and the color indicates how fast the ball will roll on the slope. Golfers will want to have an uphill putt (pin high) to convert on the greens. Aiming so that the ball will sit in a favorable location and not roll off the green is a tactic that most new players fail to employ.

Related: PGA Tour 2K21: Beginner’s guide to driving

PGA TOUR 2K21 | Swing Tips (Calibration & Mechanics)

In this guide, we share some tips on Swing, its Calibration, and Mechanics in PGA TOUR 2K21. This is especially helpful for those players who are facing some swing issues. The main problem for new players is that they cannot seem to hit the ball straight.

Knowing these simple tweaks can help you understand the swing more. The game is out on steam. If you want, you can get it from here: [ Steam Link ]

Table of Contents

Swing Tips (Calibration & Mechanics) in PGA TOUR 2K21

1. swing calibration.

Swing the club at the pace you would prefer. Try and move the stick back at peak of the swing. If done with consistency this will be your swing and if replicated will be your perfect one.

  • Depending on the difficulty, the more it is, the more precise the replicated swing needs to be.
  • Just keep the above general tips in mind and it will help you in competitive matches also.

PGA TOUR 2K21 Swing Calibration guide

2. Swing Mechanics

The biggest issue many new and returning players will have is that the “Swing Speed” mechanics. This mechanic is very unforgiving to start with. You can disable or turn off this option in the Settings menu in-game. Head over to the “Difficulty” settings in the options and change the swing difficulty, or just disable Swing Speed.

  • It is also recommended to go to the training and “tune” your swing.
  • This will help a bit, but the major difference will be the change in difficulty settings.

Take note that online ranked games will always default to the more difficult option, In the online mode of PGA TOUR 2K21, the swing difficulty is Pro, and swing speed is enabled.

3. Swing Plane and Forgiveness in PGA TOUR 2K21

We try to break it down from a Physics point of view. Swing planes are related to the R stick forgiveness of the CLUB you pick. Basically, it means how straight you can swing your club. This Is the amount that the game penalizes for moving the slider (at the location of the narrow white bar).

  • Forgiveness is the concept of widening the white bar for the LEFT stick. That is because the L slider relates to shaft lean at impact compared to zero.
  • And in normal terms, it means how off-center you can strike the face of the club and it still goes straight.

The Lean affects how high or low the ball hits the face, which is reflected in a poorer strike as compared to perfect face contact. If you use the L and R sliders to the extremes on a harder difficulty, you will need the forgiveness and swing plane stats to get the most out of your Club.

4. PGA TOUR 2K21 Swing Tips

If you play this game in a harder difficulty, chances are that your downswings will register as too fast or too slow. This can cause a lot of issues with your single-player progression, so try to calibrate it from the settings. In order to do this, go to the “Swing Calibration” option from the settings. We recommend doing this in Training mode to test it out.

  • All you need to do is take 10 Power Swings and be consistent with them.
  • This will definitely help you in fixing the “too fast” or “too slow” downswing timings in the game.

The main goal for this is to make you practice your club movement so that you become consistent and hit an accurate shot. You can also follow the Swing Calibration point we have shown above and see if that helps.

To conclude, the mechanics and calibration of PGA TOUR 2K21 are quite wide and complicated. But once you become consistent and understand the working principles, we are sure you can improve in the game.

Leave a comment down below, if you have any queries or suggestions regarding the post. Thanks for reading and we will see you in the next guide!

Is there anyway to cancel the swing calibration. I played for a week without it and then did it and it made me worse.

putting tips pga tour 2k21

You can change the difficulty to easy from the settings menu. That will nearly cancel out the calibration. As per our experience, you can play this game best with a joystick. The straight, forward motion of the stick makes the swing much more easier to control.

putting tips pga tour 2k21

I have not found a way to reverse the calibration. I hate every second of this game since calibrating. 4 games and each one worse than the last. DO NOT CALIBRATE!!

putting tips pga tour 2k21

The golfer swings fine in practice, but when playing the game, the golfer does not swing.

putting tips pga tour 2k21

Why can I not swing the club in PGA Tour 2k21. Very frustrating right out of the gate.

putting tips pga tour 2k21

I had bought this game as it was on sale on PlayStation. I hate the swinging. I would have maybe 2 or 3 good holes. But my swing is all the same don’t understand. I average a +20. I’ve played Tiger Woods for many years, was hoping it would’ve been close to that

Why can I not swing in PGA Tour 2K21. Right out of the gate, this is extremely frustrating. I will be demanding a refund if you cannot fix this.

There is a limited refund window for this. if you want, you can refund at the earliest. On another note, using a mouse is easier to figure out the swing in the game.

putting tips pga tour 2k21

I just cannot get on with this swing method, it has stopped me playing the game. Shame as otherwise good. Most older golf games you improve on the range and purchase of better clubs make for better distance and accuracy. I will be going back to one of them.

I am starting to use x box controller,i cannot take the controller straight back and straight thru . What can i do to correct this ?

yes the aiming with the stick in controllers is tough to do. try to drag the stick straight down, then make small adjustments quickly

2024 Memorial Tournament Tournament preview

The Memorial Tournament is this week, and the PGA Tour is back at Jack's place for a Signature event. Nicklaus has really enjoyed making Muirfield Village tough the last few years, so expect it again.

2024 Memorial Tournament Tournament rankings: Top 10 teams

1. Scottie Scheffler : There's no debating who is the best player in this field. It's just a debate of whether Scheffler will finish higher than third, as he has two of the last three years.

2. Xander Schauffele : Whoa, a little curveball here! Xander gets into the top 15 here quite a bit, but it's tough for him to crack into the top 10.

3. Rory McIlroy : Rory just does not have the kind of record here that can support putting him second on the list.

4. Collin Morikawa : Morikawa has been striking the ball so well the last few months, and he has done well here in the past -- including that random COVID double Memorial event.

5. Max Homa : I have Homa here somewhat by default, based on the last three years in this event. However, he was off by a million miles a Colonial, which is a concern.

6. Patrick Cantlay : Cantlay has a thing for Muirfield Village, but he's otherwise been a relative dud this year -- save for Riviera.

7. Viktor Hovland : I'm not really sure which Hovland we're going to get this week, but my hope is it's the guy who was great at the PGA Championship.

8. Shane Lowry : I think Lowry could be quite a pick this week, as he was great at Valhalla and played well here a couple of years ago.

9. Billy Horschel : Horschel is a winner here, and he's been having a really strong season. Was great at Valhalla and solid at Memorial.

10. Denny McCarthy : Denny has been close here the last two years, losing to Viktor Hovland in a playoff in 2023.

Benny and the Bets: Finally jumping on the Scottie Scheffler train

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

I’ve been fighting against boarding the Scottie Scheffler express train for a long time but I’m finally ready to jump on … for a week at least.

The past five months have been rough as the Golfbet team member prepared to go against Scheffler at most turns. It started with me suggesting as great as he is, he hadn’t shown enough “killer instinct” in head-to-head situations or when facing adversity.

Scheffler promptly came from five behind to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and did the same to become the first repeat champion of THE PLAYERS.

From that point on I still have been a staunch advocate of fading Scheffler’s odds almost every time he has teed it up, because, quite frankly, they have been way too short.

Problem there is I said it when he was a +700 favorite, then a +500 favorite, and a +400 favorite… and he has found ways to win regardless.

I opened the PGA Championship with a column listing all the reasons to fade the Texan at the season’s second major championship but let’s face it, had he not been arrested in the early hours of Friday morning, he just might have proven me wrong again there!

And so we come to the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday this week and once again Scheffler sits atop the odds board at +350. I hate these odds. It is a number designed to stop you from betting on the world No. 1. But I can’t shake the feeling he will win. Again.

I know he hasn’t won the last two starts… shock horror… and I know he hasn’t won before at Muirfield Village, the site of this week’s Signature Event. But he easily could have over the last two editions where he finished third.

Most importantly, the saga from Valhalla, has finally turned a corner for Scheffler. With all charges dropped he can start to truly move on from the ordeal. On Tuesday he said as much from Ohio. The process can move forward and his golf can take center stage again. And he loves this course.

“This is a special place for me. I remember when I was in college, I would play the U.S. Open qualifier over at the other courses (near) here… and we would always come over and watch the practice round and stay an extra day and watch a little bit,” Scheffler reminisced.

“I always dreamed of coming here and playing in this tournament and it's a dream come true just to be here in the field. So I'm excited. It would mean a lot to me to be able to shake his (Jack Nicklaus’) hand and win this golf tournament with all the history here and what Mr. Nicklaus has meant to the game.”

This week will be the 14th consecutive trip to Muirfield Village for me and if anything has stood out over this stretch it is ball-striking always comes out on top. Even in the longshot years of William McGirt or David Lingmerth it was sublime striking that got them there.

Invariably the cream rises, especially since the renovations, as a major level test is put in front of the players. The last nine winners were all inside the top 12 for Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green on the way to their triumph.

Let’s take a look at some of Scheffler’s best stats from the Memorial Tournament last year.

  • 1st: Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (+1.205)
  • 1st: Strokes Gained: Approach (+2.963)
  • 1st: Strokes Gained: Around the Green (+1.006)
  • 1st: Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green (+5.173)
  • 1st: Greens in Regulation (70.83%)
  • 1st: Proximity to Hole (27 feet, 9 inches)
  • 1st: Scrambling from the fringe (100%)
  • 1st: Scrambling from 20-30 yards (100%)
  • 1st: Final Round Scoring Average (67.00)
  • 2nd: Rough Proximity (31’5”)
  • 2nd: Left Rough Proximity (25’1”)
  • 2nd: Fairway Proximity (26’1”)
  • 2nd: Driving Distance – All Drives (305.3)
  • 3rd: Strokes Gained: Total (+3.044)
  • 3rd: Approaches from 125-150 yards (15’4”)
  • 3rd: Approaches from >200 yards (37’7”)
  • 3rd: Approaches from 175-200 yards from Rough (17’9”)
  • 3rd: Scrambling from Rough (77.78%)

So how did this guy not win? Well it took a diabolically bad week on the greens. At 65th in the field in SG: Putting (-2.129 a round) Scheffler gave up an incredible 19.796 strokes on the greens to putting leader, and eventual playoff loser Denny McCarthy.

He finished one shot out of the playoff win by Viktor Hovland. Just one more putt. Scheffler missed a putt from inside 4 feet, another inside 5 feet, another inside 6 feet, missed two others from inside 7 feet, missed four others inside 8 feet and two more each from inside 9 feet and 10 feet. Overall that is 13 missed putts inside 10 feet.

Turns out, Scheffler was dealing with some off course stuff that week as well.

“I think all of us carry a lot more stuff off the golf course with us than we let on… last year at this time we had some stuff going on that I'm not going to get into," Scheffler said. "But reflecting on where my putting was at this time last year, I had two really bad weeks in a row between here and Colonial where I hit the ball tremendously, and without the drastic difference between my ball striking and putting, it would have just been a bad week.

“I would have lost a few strokes on the greens the first two days and I would have just missed the cut and gone home and it would be like, Oh, Scottie had a tough week, but since I almost won the tournament, it became such a huge story about how poorly I putted.”

But this season, Scheffler’s putter is not the liability it was. It isn’t brilliant, but it is certainly not terrible. In his 10 measured tournaments, he has gained strokes to the field average seven times and one of those was fractionally below at -0.037 (PGA Championship). He ranks 75th this season with a +0.100 mark.

“For me it was more about just sticking to my process and continuing to learn and grow. I wouldn't trade those weeks that I had back or the year I had last year just because I felt like I learned a lot about myself and what makes me tick, and I think it made me a better player today,” Scheffler continued.

“A lot of the challenges in this game, I think, can only toughen me up and I feel like at this point in my career I'm in a great head space mentally, I'm excited about where my game's at, and I'm ready to go out and compete this week and for the rest of the season.”

And Scheffler’s ball striking stats this season? He’s first on TOUR in SG: Tee-to-Green, Approach and Total, second Off-the-Tee and fifth Around the Green.

So at the end of the day, as gut-wrenching as the +350 number on Scheffler is this week, I have to tell you all to consider him a winner anyway. There are options to take if you want more juice.

You could bet Scheffler for first round leader at +1000 as he leads Rd 1 Scoring Average this year or you could parlay Scheffler with the NBA Finals or NHL Stanley Cup Finals. Or you could do what I always advocate, watch live and try to catch some fluctuation in the odds. Pick a high point you are comfortable with and get on if that number hits. If he starts fast and you miss it, well it’s so short anyway it’s not the end of the world.

Other options – 'Without Scheffler' market

BetMGM has put up the without Scheffler market and here is where you can make moves without worrying about the Texan.

I told you all I would advocate for Collin Morikawa at the Memorial after his Sunday fade at the PGA Championship and getting +1000 without Scheffler as opposed to +1200 with him is something I can get on board with.

Morikawa was a winner at the Workday Charity Open, a one-off event on the rebound from COVID-19 held at Muirfield Village. He finished runner-up at the Memorial Tournament in 2021 and was well poised last season just a few shots back heading to Sunday only to WD from back spasms in his final round warmup.

I expect Morikawa to be in this tournament up to his eyeballs.

If you want a long shot option, check out Si Woo Kim (+5000). He has four straight top-20s at Muirfield Village and has gained +1.782 strokes on the field average a round in the last five seasons here.

Jack Nicklaus wasn’t necessarily happy doing the PGA Tour a favor.

The 18-time major champion and winner of 73 PGA Tour titles agreed to go along with a new plan that would move his annual Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio a week later — and right before the US Open — to help with the PGA Tour’s signature event series.

“We would prefer the other week,” Nicklaus said Tuesday at a news conference, per Sports Illustrated . “However, we are here this week because the Tour asked us to help them out. They said they had a thing they wanted to do and that the players had asked for and that would we help it out, and we said yes, that we would do that this week.

“But we said we would review it after this tournament and we’ll figure out how we’re going to settle the schedule after that, and I said that discussion is under way.”

Jack Nicklaus of the United States tips his cap on the 18th hole as he participates in the Folds of Honor Greats of Golf during the second round of the Insperity Invitational at The Woodlands Golf Club on May 4, 2024.

The tournament, which is in its 49th year and will run from June 6-9, has been traditionally played two weeks prior to the US Open and the week after Memorial Day.

Nicklaus mentioned the tournament has also been tied to the holiday in the past.

“Yesterday, was normally a very big day gallery-wise for us because it was Memorial Day, and we had maybe a thousand people here yesterday,” he said. “From the sponsor’s standpoint, I think that they get into board meetings and kids’ graduations and so forth, so that’s maybe not as advantageous.

Viktor Hovland shakes the hand of Jack Nicklaus and after beating Denny McCarthy in a playoff to win the 2023 Memorial Tournament.

“But that won’t make any difference. We’re going to have a good tournament this week either way, in spite of all the different things. And as I say, we did that as a favor and the Tour asked us to do that, and we said yes. So we’ve always been a supporter of the Tour. We want to try to continue to support what is best for the Tour, but we also want to support what’s best for the Memorial Tournament. So that is to be determined.”

The new schedule idea was created to prevent regular tournaments from being stuck between two signature events or any majors.

In 2023, the Memorial was played before the RBC Canadian Open. This year, the tournaments switched spots on the calendar with Robert MacIntyre winning in Toronto last week.

“The Golden Bear” didn’t take to this, advocating for the same rest between major tournaments that he once had.

Jack and Barbara Nicklaus stand behind the trophy following the final round of the Memorial Tournament on June 4, 2023.

“Let’s put it this way. When I played, I would rarely play a week before any major championship,” Nicklaus said. “So I’m asked to be part of putting on a golf tournament in a week that I would never play. That, to me, is the essential part from my standpoint.”

Nicklaus’ tournament is one of the eight signature events of the PGA Tour this year with reduced playing fields and purses reaching $20 million — with the winner getting $4 million.

The tournament was first played in 1976 at the Muirfield Village Golf Club.

putting tips pga tour 2k21

The PGA Tour is back in Canada this week for the 2024 RBC Canadian Open , which has returned to Hamilton Golf and Country Club for the 1st time since 2019. The 1st round begins on Thursday morning from Hamilton, Ontario.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets from BetMGM Sportsbook among the 2024 RBC Canadian Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

The highest-ranked player in the field this week based on the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings is Rory McIlroy , who comes in at No. 3. He was the 2019 champion here and also won the event in 2022 when it was played at St. George’s. Tommy Fleetwood is also among the favorites and ranked 14th this week, with 24th-ranked Sahith Theegala also teeing it up.

Hamilton is a short course at just 7,084 yards, and it’s a par 70 so there are only 2 par 5s, which limits the scoring opportunities a bit. However, 11 of the 12 par 4s are under 457 yards, so they’re certainly on the shorter side, which levels the playing field for longer hitters and those who don’t hit it as far.

RBC Canadian Open – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 9:48 a.m. ET.

Cameron Young (+450)

Young has the length off the tee to turn this into an even shorter course, much like McIlroy did in 2019 when he won. Young, of course, is still looking for his 1st PGA Tour victory and while there’s a chance it could happen this week, it’s safer to bet on another close call at +450 for a top-5.

Shane Lowry (+400)

Lowry finished 2nd here in 2019 when McIlroy ran away from the field by 7 shots, and he comes into the week in good form after finishing T-6 at the PGA Championship. He could keep that up at a course he’s familiar with this week.

RBC Canadian Open – Top-10 picks

Sahith theegala (+188).

Theegala has the creativity and soft touch around the greens to scramble for par when he does miss with an approach, which will come in handy this week. He finished 12th at the PGA Championship in his last start after a disappointing final round of 73.

Corey Conners (+225)

Could Conners follow Nick Taylor’s path and win on home soil in Canada? He has the ball striking to get it done on this accuracy-driven course, but he’ll need the putter to show up because he ranks 163rd in SG: putting.

RBC Canadian Open – Top-20 picks

Alex noren (+100).

Noren has finished in the top 25 in 8 straight starts, a remarkable trend that he should be able to maintain this week on a course that fits his game well. He’s short, but accurate, off the tee and a decent putter with an excellent short game around the greens (5th on tour)

Adam Hadwin (+188)

Hadwin has played the RBC Canadian Open 12 times and come in the top 10 in 3 of those starts, so he’s very familiar with this tournament – even if it’s not contested at the same course every year.

Matt Kuchar (+320)

Kuchar is more of a long shot considering he’s missed 9 cuts already this season, but he finished 4th at this venue in 2019 so maybe he can rekindle some of that magic and notch another top 20 this week.

RBC Canadian Open – Matchups

Suggested play is golfer in bold .

Tom Kim (-105) vs. Sam Burns (-120)

Kim’s game has been all sorts of off this season, ranking outside the top 100 in SG: off the tee, approach and putting. However, he’s begun to turn things around with back-to-back top-26 finishes in his last 2 starts at the PGA Championship and Charles Schwab Challenge.

RBC Canadian Open – Top English

Tommy fleetwood (+120).

Aaron Rai (+250) and Matt Wallace (+450) are the next-closest players to Fleetwood in this category, but Fleetwood still feels like a good value with his ball striking and accuracy off the tee.

RBC Canadian Open – Top Scottish

Robert macintyre (-155).

MacIntyre already has 3 top-10s this season and his only competition in this market is Martin Laird at +125. MacIntyre’s ceiling is much higher than Laird’s so we’ll lay the juice at -155.

RBC Canadian Open – First-round leader

Alex noren (+3300, +320 for top 10).

Noren is becoming almost an auto-bet for 1st-round success in some form, whether it’s the outright leader or to be in the top 10 after Round 1. He’s 2nd in Round 1 scoring average behind only Scottie Scheffler and has shot 70 or better in 4 straight opening rounds.

Shane Lowry (+3300)

Lowry came in 2nd here in 2019 and is 13th in Round 1 scoring average this season. And he’s someone who can get red hot on the course if his putter gets going.

PGA Tour, LIV Golf merger creates even bigger 'monopoly,' but at what price?

Liv golf had sued the pga tour and accused it of being a monopoly. now that they're merging, isn't that an even bigger monopoly.

putting tips pga tour 2k21

Editor's note: For the latest on the LIV Golf and PGA Tour merger,  follow USA TODAY Sports' live updates here.

Something seems awfully ironic about this big new merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

When LIV Golf and several pro golfers sued the PGA Tour last year for alleged antitrust violations, their attorneys used the word “monopoly” in their complaint against the PGA Tour 44 times in 118 pages.

“Elite Professional Golf Has Stagnated Under the PGA Tour’s Monopoly,” said the amended complaint on Page 22.

The lawsuit describes alleged abuses by the Tour as a “monopoly power,” saying the tour engaged in the “unlawful monopolization of the market for the promotion of elite professional golf events.”

“The Tour’s actions are transparently anticompetitive, as they are aimed purely at kneecapping competition from LIV Golf before it can get off the ground and threaten the Tour’s monopoly,” the complaint states.

But now that litigation is being resolved by merging the two leagues into an even bigger possible “monopolization of the market for the promotion of elite professional golf events.”

Can they do that? And what does that mean for the game?

In some ways, pro sports fans in America have seen this movie before, such as when the American Football League and the NFL merged after an expensive bidding war for players and then permission from the government amid antitrust concerns.

This is different, said Marc Edelman, law professor and antitrust expert at Baruch College. The NFL needed an act of Congress before it merged.

“It’s going to be very hard after LIV Golf has spent a year litigating and claiming the PGA Tour is a monopoly to then turn around and claim their merger with the PGA Tour would not substantially lessen competition in a relevant market,” Edelman said by phone Tuesday.

Much of it could depend on the details of the deal, which haven’t been revealed. In the meantime, USA TODAY Sports consulted with legal experts about how the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf league resolved its complaints of a U.S. monopoly by creating an even bigger global combination with more power and money than ever.

Isn’t this just another monopoly?

It depends. And it’s really up to the U.S. government to decide if it’s legal. The U.S. Department of Justice already had been looking into possible anticompetitive practices of the PGA Tour after it tried to fend off LIV Golf as a rival league and punish players for joining it.

“The PGA-LIV merger is another in a long line of successful efforts by entrenched monopoly organizers of sporting competitions to maintain their dominance through predatory behavior directed toward rivals, followed by swallowing them up,” said Steve Ross, a law professor at Penn State and former attorney with the DOJ and Federal Trade Commission. “From the point of view of law and economics, (PGA Tour commissioner) Jay Monahan is no different than John D. Rockefeller, putting independent gas stations out of business and then folding them into Standard Oil.”

The DOJ declined comment Tuesday. Ross said in an e-mail to USA TODAY Sports that he hoped the DOJ’s antitrust division would review the merger agreement to determine if consumers would be better or worse off because of the arrangement.

“Certainly, allowing all the best golfers to participate at major events is responsive to consumer preference, which the Supreme Court has stated is the 'hallmark' of antitrust,” Ross said. “We can fully assess the overall competitive effect of the merger only after examining the details of the agreement.”

How will it affect the product?

Without viable competition, monopolies theoretically can raise prices for consumers, underpay their labor and not care about customer complaints.

In this case, the new golf entity would “dominate the market for men's professional golf,” said Mark Conrad, director of the sports business concentration and associate professor of law and ethics at Fordham. “No doubt.”

How that domination is exercised is the question. Not surprisingly, Monahan described it as a positive for the PGA Tour “to take the competitor off of the board” after being driven into an expensive competition and legal battle by LIV Golf.

“The concept here is one entity controlling what’s there – fees, sponsorships, admission tickets,” said Martin Edel, co-chair of the Sports Law Practice of Goulston & Storrs in New York. “That’s more controllable (with the merger) and less subject to competition.”

On one hand, a new gusher of money for golf arguably will lift the sport and its players. Elite pro golf will benefit from a massive influx of resources, courtesy of the oil-rich Saudis, whose record on human rights still will continue to taint the relationship . That investment could enhance the game with more innovation, bigger purses and promotion of the game around the world.

What about players?

On the other hand, LIV no longer needs to throw seemingly unlimited money at top golfers to get them to defect from the PGA Tour. Phil Mickelson got his $200 million from LIV just in time .

“The brief period of free agency that golfers had is now gone,” longtime athlete agent Leigh Steinberg told USA TODAY Sports Tuesday. “From the standpoint of representing a golfer on the PGA Tour, that golfer has had options and choices, and that golfer had the competitive bidding between two different tours, one which had very deep pockets. That was a brief period of freedom.”

But nobody’s going to go broke in his merger. By pouring money into the sport, the Saudis could enhance the visibility of golfers globally, further boosting their potential earning power from endorsements.

“A rising tide is going to help all of golfers,” Steinberg said. “On the other hand, the chance to break the monopoly power of the PGA is gone.”

What about that antitrust litigation?

The PGA Tour said the announcement of the merger Tuesday would be followed by a “mutually agreed end to all pending litigation between the participating parties.”

That’s disappointing to Ross at Penn State as an antitrust professor.

“The settlement of litigation precludes a clear holding that dominant competition organizers cannot harm their fans in the short run by degrading their own product in order to exclude others, as the PGA sought to do,” Ross said in his e-mail. “If not for Saudi wealth, the innovative LIV concept likely would have folded.  Consumers and sponsors of top-rated PGA events were deprived of top stars like Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith, it seems to me, primarily to quash LIV.”

This kind of anticompetitive behavior is bad for fans, he said, because the fear of predatory behavior by the monopoly power can suppress innovation by smaller competitors.

“For years, industry leaders like Tiger Woods have complained that the PGA was not deploying its commercial assets in an optimal manner,” Ross said. “Only after LIV’s entry did the PGA respond in a significant way.”

Will it become the NFL of golf?

Other pro sports leagues have merged with upstart competitors and survived antitrust issues. The NFL did with the AFL. The NBA did with the American Basketball Association.

Both leagues are now corporate giants with huge followings, highly paid players and regular complaints from customers about the high price of tickets and cable viewership .

“It’s very rare for a governmental entity to go after a league or a tour claiming it has violated antitrust laws, principally because sports involves a degree of cooperation (between franchises), in order to create a better competitive environment,” Edel said.

Major League Baseball still enjoys an antitrust exemption, for example.

At the same time, Edel notes the Biden Administration is taking a “much more aggressive approach” with antitrust laws. The involvement of the Saudis adds political considerations to the mix, too.

The merger faces a “very uphill battle” to gain approval from the government, Edelman of Baruch College said. “The statements that have been made by LIV Golf for an extended period of time contending that the PGA Tour operated as a monopoly will prove to be very possibly a statement against interests.”
