History buffs, this is the place for you. Built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, this palace is a witness to vital incidents of Indian history. The Aga Khan Palace is an eyewitness to the rescue of famine-stricken locals, the imprisonment of Mahatama Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu and the death of Mahadev Desai and Kasturba Gandhi. The main palace has been converted into Mahatama National Memorial, where photos and paintings exhibiting the life of Mahatama Gandhi have been kept.

Osho Ashram

Visiting Osho Ashram is all together a different experience. The Ashram is situated inside the Koregaon Park area and is known for offering gala time to the guests. The Ashram is infact a 40 acre meditation resort, where meditation, massages, workshops, theatres and other events keep taking place. One can actually choose between spending time in solitude and interacting with people visiting here from 100 countries. It is a perfect place to relax in Pune.

Sinhagad Fort

It is a sight to cherish! The majestic Sinhagad Fort is perched on one of the isolated cliffs of the Bhuleshwar Range of the Sahyadris. The fort was built two thousand years ago and has many myths and tales attached to it. Although, today the fort lay in ruins, it is certainly one of the best reflections of the glorious period of Pune. It has become a popular place to visit in Pune and many of the visitors like to trek to it from the base of the 760m hill that it is perched on.

Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple

One of the most famous temples in Pune and even in Maharashtra, Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple cannot be missed when planning a sightseeing tour in the city. The temple is dedicated to Hindu God Ganesha and was built by Dagdusheth Halwai, a pious and honest man. The shrine is so popular that people from all over the country as well as world visit it. The best time to be here would be around Ganesh Festival.

Chaturshringi Temple

Another popular temple in Pune is Chaturshringi, which was built during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The legend has it that there was once was a merchant named Durlabhseth Pitambardas Mahajan who was an ardent devotee of Goddess Chaturshringi. Durlabhseth tried visiting all the temples dedicated to the Goddess but as he grew older he had trouble commuting. One night the Goddess appeared in his dream and asked him to dig at a specific place in North-West of Pune. To his surprise, a natural statue of the Goddess was found here and thus Durlabhseth decided to build a temple here. Therefore, even today, Chaturshringi temple has been of great importance to the locals.

Parvati Hill

An important place of interest in Pune, Parvati Hill is situated at the southern end of the city. The Hill houses four prominent temples of that of Shiva, Ganesh, Vishnu and Kartikeya. The major temple here is called Parvati Temple, which was once a private shrine of the Peshwa rulers. Visitors have to climb 108 unpaved stone steps to reach here and it surely adds to the adventure. The Parvati Museum is a must see here as it houses replicas of ancient paintings and manuscripts.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple

This 8 th century rock cut temple is amongst the major attractions in Pune . Carved out of single basalt rock piece, this Pataleshwar Cave Temple is able to grab the attention of many visitors. The temple is said to be built during the Rahtrakuta Era and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Shiva Linga, massive pillars and Nandi Bull are the main attractions of this temple.

Shinde Chhatri

A well-preserved structure, Shinde Chhatri has gained the popularity for its fresh Anglo-Rajasthan style of architecture. The main hall has the silver statue of Mahadji; prayer vessels used by the family to propitiate family deity; carvings, paintings and photographs of the Scindia family.

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park

Now, I may have to agree with people who think going to a zoo on a tour is waste of time. BUT, I honestly think that paying a visit to Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is absolutely worth it. Yes, I know, the zoo has been in news for its reckless handling of the animals but things have changed. The place looks better and there also have been an increase in the number of animals here. The park is divided into three parts: an animal orphanage, a snake park, and a zoo that includes 42-acre Katraj Lake. Animals like Deer, white tiger, tiger, sloth bear and elephants can be seen here. The visitors can enjoy boating in the Katraj Lake.

Another haunt for nature lovers in Pune, Mulshi Dam is situated in the west of the city. The area around the Mulshi Dam has been developed into a tourist destination in Pune. Several resorts have been set adjacent to the Lake, which is formed by the water of Mulshi Dam. Those with interest in nature are going to love this place for the splendid view of Sahyadris it offers. It can be a great romantic escape for the love birds and an inspiration for those creative at heart.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum

Steeped in history, Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum is the place that every history buff needs to explore. There are 36 sections in this museum that houses antiques, carved palace doors, pottery, 17th century miniatures, collection of nut crackers, lamps, musical items, hookah pipes, hair drying combs other items from the Mughal and Maratha period.

Filled with palaces and temples, the most important of these are the Shaniwar Wada palace and the Aga Khan Palace. The Singhagad fort is one of the popular tourist places to experience the grandiose of Maratha architecture coupled with stunning views of the Sahyadris mountain. Harishchandragad is a hill fort in Maharashtra. It is situated at an elevation of about 4670 feet in the district of Ahmednagar. Within the fort there are several temples dedicated to Vishnu and Ganesh. The monument dates back to the 6th century and finds home at an altitude of 1424 meters and more often than not, given its altitude finds itself marked on a number of trekking trails in and around the area.

49. Elephanta caves

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Elephanta Caves is a specimen of rock-cut art and architecture from the times of medieval India. The caves are located on the Elephanta island which is situated at a distance of 11 km from the city of Mumbai . Natively known as Gharapurichi Leni, the Elephanta Caves that exist today are ruins of what were once elaborately painted artworks. It also provides an amazing view of the Mumbai skyline.

50. Trimbakeshwar

Counted as the holiest temple of India, the Trimbakeshwar Temple houses one of the most important twelve Jyotirlingas, a form of Lord Shiva. 10 Hidden ‘Dark Sides’ of Popular Tourist Attractions

From historic landmarks to natural wonders, these destinations showcase the beauty and uniqueness of our world. However, behind the glossy postcard images and captivating narratives lie hidden stories that reveal the complex and often unsettling realities of these attractions. Delving beyond the surface, we are taking a look at the shadows cast by some of the most celebrated tourist sites and attractions.

1. Bodies Frozen in the Alps

In Europe, the Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range. The range stretches across several countries including France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Slovenia, and Liechtenstein.

Throughout history, there have been many cases of mountaineers and travelers who unfortunately lost their lives in the Alps due to accidents, avalanches, and extreme weather conditions. The Alps were also a significant theater of war, particularly along the border between Italy and Austria-Hungary.

Now, that glaciers are thawing in the Swiss Alps, dead bodies are being uncovered. Some from several decades ago.

2. Washington Square in Philadelphia Used to be a Graveyard

Washington Square in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was originally used as a burial ground. It is one of the five original public squares designed by William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, in his 1682 plan for the city. The square was established as a cemetery and was used as a burial ground for the city’s residents, including notable figures, from its establishment until the early 19th century.

Over time, as the city grew, the cemetery became crowded, and concerns about public health and the spread of disease led to the decision to close the burial ground in 1810. The square was later transformed into a park and renamed Washington Square in honor of George Washington. Today, Washington Square serves as a public park and historical site.

3. Disneyland: Real Bones Used for Pirates of the Caribbean Ride

There used to be real human bones on display as part of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. When the ride was first constructed in the 1960s, the Imagineers (Disney’s creative team) wanted to create a realistic and eerie atmosphere. To achieve this, they incorporated various props, including real human skeletons.

The original ride contained several skeletal remains, some of which were acquired from medical schools and universities. These remains were cleaned and placed within the attraction’s scenes, such as in the pirate treasure scenes and in the dungeon area. However, as concerns grew about the ethical implications of using real human remains and the ride’s expansion into other Disney parks around the world, Disney eventually removed the real skeletons from the attractions.

By the early 2000s, all real human bones were replaced with artificial replicas or props. The scenes were redesigned to maintain the macabre atmosphere without using actual human remains. Disney made this change to be more respectful of the cultural and ethical considerations surrounding the use of real human remains in entertainment settings.

4. Bathing in the Ganges River in India

The Ganges is considered the holiest river in Hinduism and is often referred to as “Maa Ganga” (Mother Ganga). It’s believed that bathing in the river can cleanse one’s sins and lead to spiritual purification. However, bathing in the Ganges River, despite its religious significance and the belief in its purifying properties, can carry serious health risks due to pollution. The Ganges is often contaminated with sewage, industrial waste, and other pollutants. This contamination can lead to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and gastroenteritis. In some areas, open defecation is practiced along the riverbanks, which further contributes to water pollution. Poor hygiene and sanitation practices can increase the risk of disease transmission.

5. Petting Tigers & Other Big Cats in Thailand

Petting or interacting with tigers and other big cats, especially in captive settings, might seem like an exciting experience while on vacation, but there are significant ethical, conservation, and safety concerns associated with this practice. Many facilities that offer petting or photo opportunities with tigers often keep these animals in captivity under substandard conditions. Tigers in such settings may be subjected to small enclosures, inadequate care, and limited access to proper veterinary attention.

In some cases, tigers and other big cats used for petting or photo opportunities in captive settings have been reported to be drugged. This unethical practice is primarily done to make the animals appear more docile and manageable, especially when tourists or visitors are allowed to get close to them. The Tiger Temple (Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua) in Thailand was one of the most well-known tourist attractions that offered this.

6. Larger Airports Have Morgues

Many larger airports around the world have morgues or designated areas for handling deceased individuals. These facilities are primarily used for situations where a person passes away while at the airport, whether it’s a passenger, airport employee, or other individuals. Many modern cruise ships are also equipped with morgues or designated areas for handling deceased individuals.

7. Dubai's Skyline Has a Dark Side

Dubai’s impressive skyline and iconic skyscrapers are often associated with economic growth and modernity. However, there have been concerns raised about the treatment of workers and potential human rights issues in the construction of these structures. Migrant workers, who make up a significant portion of the workforce in the construction industry, have reported long working hours, low wages, and inadequate living conditions.

Some workers are subjected to exploitative practices such as passport confiscation and limited mobility. In the rush to complete projects quickly, concerns have been raised about safety standards on construction sites. Accidents have occurred due to inadequate safety measures, posing risks to workers’ lives and well-being.

8. Yellowstone Hydrothermal Areas

The hydrothermal features in Yellowstone, which include geysers, hot springs, and boiling mud pots, are beautiful and unique but also extremely dangerous. The high temperatures, unpredictable nature of the thermal features, and the acidic or toxic nature of some of the water can pose serious risks to visitors.

Over the years, there have been incidents where individuals have fallen into boiling hot springs or other thermal features, resulting in severe burns or fatalities. Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of the Maratha Imperial architecture used in India in the bygone era. It tells the historical tale of the Maratha Kingdom as it has seen every event that occurred in Peshwas Life over time. It was built by the Peshwas’ symbolizing the brave hearts of the Marathas, who strived hard to keep its glory alive. Though the fort couldn’t tolerate the battering from the wrong time but the stone boundaries still recite the untold tales of the colourful journeys lead by the heroic Marathas.However, some ruins still remain reciting the remarkable stories and contorted tales. You can witness the enormous stone boundaries made to protect the beautiful Shaniwar Wada, which shows the level of security provided to the people of the kingdom. The walls have a magnificent wooden gate reflecting the Mughal architecture, which is another example of how secure the palace was made. There are long iron spikes tucked into the gate, which could reduce the attack of the enemy and kept elephants away.Besides this, you can see a garden which follows the style of the Mughal architecture. It also has a lovely fountain resembling a 16 petaled lotus, right in the middle of the garden. Adding to that, you can see the boundaries marked on the ground, which could tell about all the rooms. There is nothing more than this havoc of time, which changed the face of the mighty Shaniwar Wada into nothing. But you can still make these remains your window into the past to relive what has happened in history.History of Shaniwar Wada:The foundation stone of the Shaniwar Wada was laid in 1730 by Peshwa Bajirao I. Initially, it was intended to be a colossal palace of seven stories made out of stone. But the people of the national capital argued that only King can have a castle made of stone. So, the construction of Shaniwar Wada began using bricks. It took two years to complete this elegant structure, which displayed an excellent blend of the Maratha Imperial architecture with the Mughal architecture. The interiors had valuable furniture and decorations along with carvings of flowers and paintings of scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The first major fire in the year 1791 destroyed a significant part of the fort, which was re-constructed again. Then the next explosion in 1808 burnt all the necessary artifacts and documents in the palace. Then another fire in 1812 destroyed the upper two stories of the castle, followed by a fire in 1813 which destroyed the Royal Hall. All this destruction was taken to another level in the year 1818. The British attacked Shaniwar Wada, which resulted in collapsing all the top stories. Finally, in the year 1828, a fire caught the whole palace, which burned for a week and wrecked it. Architecture of Shaniwar Wada:Architecture of Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of Maratha style of construction blended with authentic Mughal architecture. The main gate, also known as Delhi Darwaza, is adorned with iron spikes to restrain the enemy attack as it is enormous enough to pass an elephant through it. There is a small aisle on the top of the door which has dome-shaped windows definitely taken from the Mughal architecture. Besides this gate, the Wada has four more gates, namely Mastani Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaja, and Narayan Darwaza. The walls have floral carvings and paintings resembling the Mughal architecture style. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata are also found painted at various significant spots. The windows and doors are also dome-shaped contributing to the traces of Mughal architecture. Archaeologists believe that initially, the fort was six-floored before it was destroyed by the fire. Finally, the garden has a 16 petaled lotus representing the grace of the bygone era.
