Plantronics headsets are renowned for their exceptional quality and performance. However, users may encounter various issues that can disrupt the seamless functionality of these devices. Understanding the common problems associated with Plantronics headsets is crucial for effectively troubleshooting and resolving these issues. Here are some of the most prevalent issues experienced by Plantronics headset users:

Audio Distortion : Some users have reported experiencing audio distortion while using their Plantronics headsets. This issue can manifest as crackling, static, or muffled sound, significantly impacting the overall audio quality and user experience.

Connectivity Problems : Connectivity issues, such as intermittent disconnections or difficulty pairing the headset with devices, have been reported by users. These problems can hinder the seamless operation of the headset, especially during important calls or while enjoying multimedia content.

Battery Drain : Plantronics headsets are equipped with rechargeable batteries, and some users have encountered issues related to rapid battery drain. This can lead to frequent recharging and may disrupt the intended usage duration of the headset.

Microphone Malfunctions : The microphone is a critical component of a headset, and users have reported instances of microphone malfunctions, including low sensitivity, background noise pickup, or complete microphone failure.

Auto-Muting : One of the most frustrating issues faced by Plantronics headset users is the unexpected auto-muting problem. This issue can cause the microphone to mute itself without user intervention, leading to communication disruptions and misunderstandings during calls or online meetings.

Understanding these common issues is the first step towards effectively troubleshooting and resolving them. By addressing these challenges, users can maximize the performance and reliability of their Plantronics headsets, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable user experience.

Troubleshooting Steps

When encountering the vexing issue of auto-muting with your Plantronics headset, it's essential to approach the troubleshooting process systematically. By following these comprehensive steps, you can swiftly identify and address the root cause of the auto-muting problem, restoring your headset to its optimal functionality.

Check Physical Connections : Start by ensuring that all physical connections, including the headset's cables and connectors, are secure and free from damage. A loose or damaged connection can potentially trigger auto-muting behavior. Additionally, inspect the mute button on the headset for any obstructions or malfunctions that may inadvertently trigger the auto-muting feature.

Update Firmware and Drivers : Plantronics periodically releases firmware updates to enhance the performance and compatibility of their headsets. Visit the official Plantronics website to check for available firmware updates for your specific headset model. Similarly, ensure that the device drivers on your computer or mobile device are up to date, as outdated drivers can contribute to erratic headset behavior, including auto-muting.

Adjust Audio Settings : Access the audio settings on your computer or mobile device and verify that the correct input and output devices are selected. Additionally, check the microphone settings to ensure that the input volume and sensitivity are appropriately configured. Making adjustments to these settings can mitigate auto-muting issues stemming from incorrect audio configurations.

Test on Different Devices : To isolate the source of the auto-muting problem, test the headset on alternative devices, such as a different computer, smartphone , or tablet. If the auto-muting issue persists across multiple devices, it indicates a potential hardware or firmware-related issue with the headset itself. Conversely, if the problem is exclusive to a particular device, it may point to compatibility or configuration issues on that specific platform.

Reset and Re-Pair : If your Plantronics headset features wireless connectivity, consider performing a reset and re-pairing process. This involves clearing any existing pairing information from the headset and then re-establishing the connection with your device. Refer to the headset's user manual or the manufacturer's website for detailed instructions on how to perform a reset and re-pairing procedure.

Contact Technical Support : Should the auto-muting issue persist despite your troubleshooting efforts, it may be beneficial to reach out to Plantronics' technical support team for further assistance. They can provide specialized guidance, diagnose potential hardware faults, and offer tailored solutions to resolve the auto-muting problem effectively.

By diligently following these troubleshooting steps, you can navigate the complexities of the auto-muting issue and restore your Plantronics headset to its optimal functionality. Remember that patience and persistence are key virtues when troubleshooting technical issues, and by leveraging these strategies, you can reclaim the seamless communication and audio experience that Plantronics headsets are renowned for.

Issue: Auto-Muting

The perplexing phenomenon of auto-muting poses a significant challenge for users of Plantronics headsets, disrupting the fluidity of communication and impeding the natural flow of audio interactions. This issue manifests as the microphone inexplicably muting itself without any deliberate action from the user, leading to frustrating interruptions during calls, online meetings, or gaming sessions.

Auto-muting can stem from various underlying causes, ranging from hardware malfunctions to software inconsistencies. Understanding the potential triggers of this issue is instrumental in formulating an effective troubleshooting approach to rectify the auto-muting behavior.

One common culprit behind auto-muting is a malfunctioning mute button on the headset. Physical obstructions, wear and tear, or internal defects can inadvertently trigger the mute function, causing the microphone to mute itself without user intervention. Additionally, loose or damaged connections, both in the headset's cables and connectors, can contribute to erratic auto-muting behavior, necessitating a thorough inspection of the physical components.

Software-related factors also play a pivotal role in the auto-muting conundrum. Outdated firmware or device drivers can introduce compatibility issues, leading to unexpected mute commands being sent to the headset. Furthermore, incorrect audio settings on the connected device, such as input/output device selection or microphone sensitivity, can instigate auto-muting incidents, highlighting the importance of meticulous audio configuration.

Wireless connectivity adds another layer of complexity to the auto-muting issue, as signal interference or pairing irregularities can trigger disruptive mute events. Disable Mute Unmute noises and Toasts in Plantronics Hub

I use a couple of great Plantronics headsets, mainly the Voyager 8200 and Voyager 5200 UC. I use Plantronics Hub windows software, which allows you to update the firmware, set some advanced functionality and even do device reporting into their Manager Pro product (which we can pull into Modality Diagnostics).

image_thumb[2]

One thing that annoyed me was mute and unmute both pings a “toast” and makes a windows sound to notify you. In Teams I try to stay on mute when not talking, so am frequently on and off mute.

image_thumb[5]

The headset already gives an in-ear “mute on”, “mute off” (configurable). I don’t need a toast and windows noise.

I was looking in the Plantronics Hub software for the ability to disable this bit couldn’t find it. Thanks to my friend Randy Wintle at Plantronics/Polycom for pointing out these can be disabled in the windows notification center

Thanks this helped me :)

This helped also me a lot. Thanks!!!

This does not work on Voyager Focuc UC. I still get the annoying toasts.

Did you find a solution?

This does not work on C720 either….

Does not work on the 3210 either.

This does not work on C720 either….

you rock – thanks

Thanks for your advice. I have found this settings on my own, it works for me too. This behavior is really annoying, if you have a friend at Plantronics/Polycom I suggest you to ask him to have configurable options in their software, or at least have a hint how the user can switch it off.

You can also just click the application name, and then you’ll have an option to turn the sounds off but leave the toasts on.

Tech Corner: Voyager Focus UC Muting Function

plantronics voyager auto mute

The Voyager Focus UC is a comfortable, versatile Bluetooth headset from Poly (formerly Plantronics). The built-in sensor presence pauses streaming media when you remove the headset, making sure you don’t miss any content. These same sensors auto-mute the microphone when you take the headset off, as well as when the microphone boom is placed in the upward position. These features can be a great help, and also a huge headache if the wearing sensors aren’t functioning properly.

Let’s talk about what you can do in the event that your auto-mute goes rogue!

Why does this happen.

Wearing sensors in the headset are triggered by pressure to the ear cups, and proximity to the microphones in the boom. When pressure is applied, the headset senses it, and either mutes or pauses streaming audio from the PC, phone, or mobile device. If you take off the headset, or move the microphone boom into the up position, those sensors are how the headset knows to mute the audio channel. This can be a useful feature if you’re in a busy environment, and need the ability to switch between on-ear and off-ear communication.

How does this become a problem?

Because these sensors work by pressure, if the headset isn’t worn in just the right way, it can result in contact issues. The auto-mute could toggle on and off, often without user interference. The same applies to the microphone boom not being at the correct position, or not sensing where it’s positioned. As with any sensors, they need occasional calibration for optimal use.

Here are a few options that can change your muting game

How to reset the sensors:.

• With your headset powered on, charge your headset on the charge stand for 10 seconds.

• Press and hold both the Mute and Play/pause buttons for more than 4 seconds until the LEDs flash purple twice, being careful to not touch the earcup padding or allow it to come in contact with surfaces.

plantronics voyager auto mute

How to disable the sensors:

• Hold both the Mute and Call Answer buttons for more than 4 seconds until the LED flashes purple, then red. Repeat to reactivate; the LED flashes purple then blue. NOTE: Sensors cannot be disabled while streaming audio.

• Download Plantronics Hub from Downloads & Apps | Poly

• In the Settings tab of Plantronics Hub, go to Sensors and Presence. Within this menu, you can change any wearing sensor settings, including turning the Wearing Sensor (Master) to OFF. This will disable all wearing sensors. Don’t forget to click APPLY to keep that setting.

plantronics voyager auto mute

A final note:

Sometimes there are PC settings that keep your microphone muted without input from the headset itself.

After large Windows updates, there are often issues with the microphone in Poly headsets not being recognized by the Windows system. This can be verified by going to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > the Recording tab > right click on the device and select Properties > under the Levels tab, you’re checking to make sure that the speaker icon doesn’t have a red “X” through it. If it does, click on the red “X” to enable the microphone input, and then click OK. This should resolve the sync issue with the microphone.

If your mute settings are giving you headaches in meetings or calls, we recommend giving these fixes a try!

One comment on “ tech corner: voyager focus uc muting function ”.

As someone ready to give up in frustration at fixing the issue, I appreciate the last paragraph in this article immensely. My mute function is now fixed after doing the steps! ^.=.^

We use Plantronics Focus headsets. On two different headsets on two different laptops we have experienced the headset automatically muting during a call. When attempting to turn off the mute, the headset quickly mutes again and will not remain unmuted.

We have updated the headset through the plantronics hub.

Any other suggestions on trouble shooting when this happens?

Mute issue with Skype for Business & Plantronics Voyager Focus UC-M

I have a problem with Skype for Business & my Plantronics Voyager Focus UC-M headset. During a Skye meeting, everytime I press mute button on the headset,  it says "Mute On", then beebs and immediately says "Mute off" and mute is then off. This headset button works fine with other audio software, f. ex. Skype Call and also with other devices such as my iPad.

Plantronics headset firmware is v160, Skype for Business is 16.0.8431.2110. Both the headset and the USB connector BT600 are updated to latest firmware.

Hi llkka58,

According to your issue, please use another headset on the same devices to see if issue still occurs. Also please check your Audio settings, please view: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/set-audio-device-options-in-skype-for-business-2533d929-9814-4349-8ae4-fca29246e2ff .

Meanwhile, it is suggested that using the App Mute button on the meeting screen, please try to click Mute button on the meeting screen to see if issue persists. If the issues still occurs when clicking the Mute button, could you please provide more detailed information to me for further analyzing?

Sorry this didn't help.

Great! Thanks for your feedback.

How satisfied are you with this reply?

Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site.

Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks for your quick response!

I don’t have very many headsets available for testing, but I think that when I was using my old Voyager Legend UC headset, I did not have this problem.

Audio settings are OK, I have been configuring these many times already.

The mute button on Skype meeting screen works, although I’m not sure if it actually mutes the mike. Seems that it doesn’t which is obviously very critical.

On the other hand, I have bougth this quite expensive and Microsoft-specialised wireless headset just because i do not sit at my desk all the time, so it’s important to have the mute button on the headset to work as it should.

Something weird can be seen on the list of audio devices: I see a PLT Focus Hands-free headset and 2-Plantronics BT600 (BT600 is the USB adapter that came with the headset). This problem occurs when the default audio device is PLT Focus, but not when the default audio device is this BT600.

I noticed that you said the issue only occurs when the default audio devices is PTL Focus, please go to Windows Devices Manager-> Sound, video and game controllers-> find the related driver, and right-click to update, you can also update all.

plantronics voyager auto mute

Meanwhile, change all your mouse, keyboard devices to see if issue still occurs.

Have you update the drivers?

All the drivers were already updated to latest versions available.

Hi likka58,

Thanks for your updates, since the Skype for Business version is not the latest version, please update the version to see if update can fix this issue.

And also please try to test on another PC or same type of devices, and use the PLT Focus Hands-free headset to see if this issue also occurs on other clients.

Do you have any updates?

Sorry for the delay.

The current version is 16.0.8431.2153, I checked this from lync.exe's file properties and also with Office 2016 update checker, which told me that my Office 2016 is up to date.

But the fact is, that I bought this headset during last year (November, if I remember correctly). It was sold as a Microsoft compatible device, and I think I have a right to expect that this device should work correctly with the MS product versions available at purchase time, not only with versions that are not yet even published then.

Unfortunately I don't have very many PC's with Skype for Business lying around here for testing purposes.

I think that this discussion, as helpful that it might be, can now be closed as unsolved, because the real root cause seems not to be solved via version checks etc. Thanks for your effort, anyhow :-).

Plantronics released recently new firmware for the device, which solved the issue for me. I also had pretty annoying issues with it and it only occurred on Windows 10 Skype only with the Plantronics Focus UC.

It is also clearly depicted as a bug that is solved with this firmware upgraded.

See the Plantronics readme file below:

Plantronics Savi W740-M auto-mute issue

This is my first post and it is with questions concerning an issue no one seems to have experienced before. I have a new Savi W740-M that was ent to me as a replacement from Plantronics in hopes of solving my problem. Since this was not successful I am guessing that the problem lies outside of the hardware.

The problem is that the unit “auto-mutes” randomly. By auto-mute I mean that is will put itself into mute status with no initiation my me. This occurs when the phone is in use and when it is in standby. I have connected the phone to a Ring Central softphone via my PC, to Skype via a separate PC and to my android smartphone via BT. In all cases the auto-muting continues to occur randomly. By randomly I mean it may occur once in 15 minutes and then occur repeatedly every 2 to 3 seconds for an unspecified number of times.

I have sought solutions with Plantronc Tech Support and Ring Central Tech Support to date they have found no solution. I am hoping that expanding my source of help may find a solution.

Other steps taken today include:

Replaced battery

Updated firmware on Savi & PC Sound Card.

Uninstalled and reinstalled software for Plantronics Hub & Ring Central softphone. Uninstalled and reinstalled Skype (all with new latest downloads)

Checked and reset all settings for above.

The problem seems to be progressive, in that it appears to be occurring more frequently as time goes on. Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated as this has made the Savi, a wonderfully comfortable device, virtually useless.

Sorry to hear this. Have you gone back again to Plantronics TAC about this since you got the replacement unit? If not, be assured they would want to know about it.

Yes, Plantronics TAC is aware of the issue. Todate they have not found a solution and have pointed to the PC or softphone as possible issues and in turn RC and MS point at Planronics. I have at times thought each may be a contributing factor but as noted above, by elimination and testing it appease to be more likely that the issue resides with Plantronics. I think this is either a software or firmware issue. I would think if this was a hardware issue with two separate new units there would be a much bigger issue. This is why I am reaching out to a larger audience in hopes that I am not the only one experiencing this. Also, and more importantly, I hope to find a solution. I am not looking to blame anyone I just need a solution. As noted previously, I used the Savi with teh Ring Central softphone for almost 6 months without an issue. Then it started and continues on multiple devices and with multiple software. Based on this I would think the problem lies some where in the latest firmware.

I am having the same issue and at times it will rapidly cycle mute on and mute off. I have taken the same steps of uninstalling and firmware upgrades (including the Dec release and still experiencing issues. interested in knowing if others are also having continued issues

I am also having the same issue. Just started mid-day one day last week. I have done everything noted to also try and resolve and have had no success. I have another computer I can hook it up to as a test and see if it experiences the same issue. The other PC is not same specs or OS.

I switched everything to a different machine and did not experience the same muting issue. Have narrowed it down to the specific machine with the issue. Have now switched the USB that it connects to. Previously was connecting to the USB in the docking station. Switched to USB directly on the laptop and still continued to have the issue. Removed all other USB devices (ejected) from machine and it took a moment but the muting issue did return as prevalent as before.

So far the issue still remains. The machine that I am having the issue with is a Windows 7 machine without the latest windows updates. The machine that is operational is a Windows 10 with the latest updates applied. I am currently looking for windows updates on the Windows 7 machine that I can apply and see if any of those resolve the problem.

@neil-plantronics @loelhofmann @jeffchristensen

Thanks Pam & Jeff. Here is an update.I too tried different USB ports with the same result as Pam. A slight delay and them it began auto muting again. I then connected the headset to a different PC also, this one is a labtop with the same type i3 Intel processor. I installed the current app (v 8.3.5.24028) from Ring Central and the current HUB (v 3.8.51571.43789) downloaded from Plantronics. For the last 48 hour I have had no problems. The softphone via headset sends and receives calls without issue and mute works as it is intended. This is of course, a pain as I now have two PCs running and switching between the two is both inconvenient and time-consuming.

I talked yesterday to a contracted IT specialist that is affiliated with neither Plantronics or RC. He sagested the culprit might be the integrated sound card on desktop PC. I had previously updated the drivers for this but with no effect. I am now in the process of buying a separate sound card to install. I will let you know how this works.

In the end, it appears it is system (hardware/software) specific and not an issue with the Savi 740 or the RC app as a whole.

I am guessing this is an uncommon issue as there has been not additions of comments since January. I thought I would post an update none the less incase there are additional folks out there with this same issue.

I replaced my integrated sound card with a new sound card and updated drive with hopes that would fix the problem. It did not. I have also checked all updates for the Savi, the soft phone and the PC with no effect. It remains a problem with one PC. I can run the same softphone and the Plantrioncs HUB on another PC with the same OS (Win7 - full up to date) and have no issues. I have tried all the USB ports on the PC in question with no effect. Since the Savi 740 worked fine for several months on this same PC and the problem persists regardless of the drivers, sound card or USB port, I am going to assume that it is not a hardware problem.

I should note that the PC without issue is running Win7 Professional while the one with the problem is running Win7 Home Premium. Could this be a windows issue?

I was having the same frustrating issue. However the solution was very simple for me and may not be what everyone else is experiencing.

My solution:

I have a laptop, running Win 7 Enterprise, and in a docking station with the Plantronics Savi connected to the docking station. My desk phone is also is also connected.

My laptop also has a function key that mutes the microphone of the laptop. I often have this on all the time for Skype/Lync meetings so that conversations on my side are not picked up. For this function, make sure that your computer speaker/audio device in Windows is NOT in mute mode nor the microphone muting function is engaged, otherwise the Savi will see that you are muting and automatically mute the headset when you use it.

This may seem obvious, but if you don’t pay attention to the microphone muting on your computer the Savi driver is dutifully programed to obey your computer settings.

Maybe this will work for some of you…

Well aj64 - You just solved my problem in 5 seconds that I spent about an hour looking into within the user guide. Thanks for helping out the guy that has a contentious relationship with common sense at times.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner, aj64!! Great find, but odd given my scenario. I used to have a Dell Latitude 7450 with the USB interface to the Savi connected to the Dell Dock. The Dell has the FN F4 feature to mute the mic, which was typically enabled (i.e. muted) and I never had the ‘auto mute’ issue with the Savi. I recently changed to a Lenovo X1 Yoga that has the FN F4 mute mic feature as well, and the Savi USB interface is connected to the Lenovo (USB-C) dock. While this mic mute is enabled, no matter what the interface on the Savi (PC, Mobile, or hard endpoint/phone), when I answer or make a call, the Savi is always muted. I turned off the PC mic mute and no more auto-mute. Tell `em what he’s won, Johnny! Why can’t Plantronics recognize these frustrating issues and address them properly is the $64,000 question…

Thanks, again, AJ64!

I get the same issues with my Plantronics Legend UC.

After reading comments I discovered my HP laptop was causing mute on/off. Still cannot reproduce the problem, I can fix!. Win 10 professional / HP / Plantronics Legend UC . Use docking station so I didn’t think to look at the keyboard - FN F8 fixed.

Thanks to aj64 & robcurtis3
