Pilot travel centers llc continues growth in 2024 with new locations, remodels and expanded truck maintenance network.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., March 05, 2024 --( BUSINESS WIRE )--As North America's largest travel center network, Pilot Travel Centers LLC continues to prioritize strategic growth in 2024 with plans to add 35 travel centers and remodel more than 75 locations across its network. It is also expanding its truck maintenance network of Southern Tire Mart at Pilot Flying J (STMP) shops.

The 2024 growth plan includes building 10 new travel centers to increase the company’s presence in several states, bringing additional services, amenities and over 500 truck parking spaces to the road. With 25 dealer locations also expected to join the network, drivers will gain access to more stops along their routes that are eligible for Pilot Travel Centers LLC’s myRewards loyalty perks and other company programs.

"Expanding into new communities and enhancing our services remains a key part of our long-term strategy," said Allison Cornish, senior vice president of store modernization and development at Pilot Travel Centers LLC. "We continually evaluate our network with our guests’ needs in mind and are making significant investments in our travel centers to provide drivers an exceptional experience at every stop along their journey."

Last year, the company opened 10 new travel centers and welcomed more than 20 dealer locations to its network. The new stores were conveniently located along major routes in key markets for travelers and professional drivers, including Yucca and Ash Fork, AZ; Colton and Rialto, CA; Gallup, NM; McCarran, NV; Edon, OH; Holladay, TN; Odessa, TX; and Wamsutter, WY.

As part of its New Horizons initiative, Pilot Travel Centers LLC has plans to overhaul an additional 75 locations this year for a total of nearly 200 completed remodels since launching the program in 2022. These major enhancements include curb-to-counter makeovers with refreshed restrooms and showers, new kitchens, expanded food and beverage options and updated technology.

In addition to expanding its travel center network, Pilot Travel Centers LLC is looking to bring more top-of-the-line maintenance and tire services to its trucking customers through its partnership with Southern Tire Mart. Over the next year, the company plans to add more than 30 shops to its travel centers for a total of over 85 locations across the country.

Pilot Travel Centers LLC has lost two more executives following Berkshire Hathaway taking full control of the company, according to a Reuters report. Brad Jenkins, who was president of Pilot Flying J Energy, and Bill Cashmareck, vice president of petroleum marketing and business development, are no longer with the company.

Earlier this month, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. acquired the remaining 20% interest in Pilot Travel Centers that it did not own from Pilot Corp. The Haslam family, which includes Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, in 2017 sold 38.6% of Pilot to Berkshire Hathaway for $2.8 billion and, in January, 41.4% for more for $8.2 billion. The Haslam family settled a billion-dollar lawsuit against Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire Hathaway ahead of a trial over how Berkshire Hathaway accounted for the value of Pilot stores .

The companies had different ideas on how to run the company.

“I’m very glad we own Pilot. I just wish we bought 100% of it when I first made the deal, but that was not the deal that was offered to us,” Buffett told shareholders in 2023, according to a CNBC report.

“We realized things were going to be run differently, and there were some philosophical differences,” former Pilot Chairman and CEO Jimmy Haslam, who also owns the Cleveland Browns football team, told the Knoxville News Sentinel in a recent interview. “They owned 80% of the company and paid us a lot of money for that 80%. We just thought it was best for our family to go ahead and sell the 20% and to move on, and we certainly wish the company and all its team members nothing but the best of luck."

In May 2023, the new owners replaced Chief Executive Officer Shameek Konar and Chief Financial Officer Kevin Wills with longtime Berkshire Hathaway executives Adam Wright and Joe Lillo , respectively. The company also released about 15 employees, mostly connected to its crude oil trading operation, Reuters said.

Pilot had expanded its fuel purchasing and trading business by recruiting diesel, gasoline and crude oil traders from ExxonMobil, Phillips 66, Noble Group and others, said the report. Since Berkshire Hathaway took an 80% stake, the company began scaling down its risk-related trading operation, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

“We can confirm that Brad Jenkins and Bill Cashmarek are no longer with Pilot Travel Centers LLC,” the company said in a statement provided to CSP. “We are committed to our energy business, and to providing reliable supply to our customers, with the ambition to be the leading energy and experience provider people rely on to fuel their journeys. Our energy division remains an important piece of our overall strategy.”

Pilot Travel Centers LLC, General Motors and EVgo make convenient, accessible charging a reality with opening of first stations in coast-to-coast EV charging network

At least 25 locations offering 100 fast charging stalls by end of year; approximately 200 locations targeted by end of 2024

  • By Automotive World
  • December 5, 2023

Pilot Travel Centers LLC, General Motors and EVgo Inc. today announced the opening of the first 17 locations of their previously announced  national electric vehicle fast charging network. Now available in 13 states, the network features an elevated charging experience, providing EV travelers access to the same amenities offered at existing Pilot and Flying J travel center locations.

“EV drivers are eager for a better charging experience and to have more charging locations along America’s most traveled corridors. These new charging locations and the many more to come, will be critical for improving range confidence,” said Adam Wright, Pilot Travel Centers LLC chief executive officer. “As interest in EVs continues to grow, we believe our network can be a catalyst to getting more EV drivers on the road.”

Pilot Travel Centers LLC, GM, and EVgo, along with multiple public agencies and utilities, have worked together to grow the nation’s public fast charging infrastructure, creating a model for how public-private collaboration can make measurable progress in accelerating broader access to EV charging. The three industry leaders have worked to provide current and future EV drivers with a thoughtful, practical and accessible charging experience for long distance travel.

Many locations throughout the network offer a variety of 24/7 amenities, products and services, including:

  • Multiple fast charging stalls at each site, with chargers capable of delivering up to 350kW.
  • Canopies to help protect drivers from the elements during charging.
  • Pull-through charging stalls to accommodate EV towing.
  • Centrally located chargers in well-lit areas, monitored around-the-clock by onsite staff.
  • Access to restrooms, food and beverage options, and free Wi-Fi.
  • Plug and Charge compatibility for a streamlined charging experience.

A seamless digital user experience has also been built into this network — EV travelers will be able to easily find available charging locations via GM’s vehicle brand apps, Pilot’s  myRewards Plus  app, the  EVgo app , PlugShare and other applications designed for EV drivers.* Beginning in spring 2024, GM and Pilot Travel Centers LLC will introduce exclusive benefits for GM drivers, including the ability to reserve a charger, and discounts on charging. All EV travelers can also save at Pilot and Flying J locations with regular deals on food, beverages and merchandise available in the myRewards Plus app.*

“As GM continues to advance its vision of an all-electric future, we’re collaborating broadly to accelerate access to convenient charging at home and on the go, offering additional confidence to prospective single vehicle customers considering an EV,” said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy. “This new network will provide EV drivers with a quality charging experience and greater peace of mind during road trips.”

By the end of 2023, it is expected that at least 25 Pilot and Flying J travel centers will feature EV fast charging, with approximately 200 locations targeted by the end of 2024. In total, the network will include up to 2,000 high-power fast charging stalls at up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers across the U.S., connecting urban and rural communities. Expansion sites for this network have been strategically selected for continued electrification of highly traveled corridors in every corner of the nation.

“EVgo is committed to delivering a convenient, reliable, and customer-centric charging experience,” said Dennis Kish, EVgo chief operating officer. “With robust amenities, optimal corridor locations, high-power charging and more, our collaboration with GM and Pilot Company puts drivers first and boosts range confidence for every EV traveler on the road.”
