If you are a golf fan, you are excited for this week with the second major tournament on tap.
While the four majors are always the most intriguing tournaments, they have even more appeal given the landscape of professional golf these days.
This week’s PGA Championship will have a maximum of 156 golfers in the field, including 16 previous champions. Furthermore, 16 LIV Tour players are expected to tee it up at Valhalla Golf Club.
Valhalla is a par-71 that stretches over 7,600 yards. All three of the par-3s are more than 190 yards and six of the par-4s are over 470 yards.
This is one of the longest courses these golfers will play all year and it could play even longer with rain in the forecast. Driving distance played a big factor at Valhalla in 2014 (the last time the course held the PGA Championship), and I expect that to be the case again this week.
As with most majors, this is going to be a complete test of skill. This course will expose any weaknesses, so focusing on golfers who are solid all-around isn’t a bad strategy.
In addition to distance off the tee, strokes-gained approach and bogey avoidance, I am looking at a few other factors. Ideally, I want to target golfers who have a good track record in majors, who play well in strong fields and who prefer long and difficult courses.
We have no shortage of storylines heading into the week, including:
- Scottie Scheffler’s first start since his wife gave birth to their first child.
- Rory McIlroy is looking for his third straight PGA Tour victory. He’s coming off back-to-back victories at the Zurich Classic and the Wells Fargo Championship.
- Defending champion Brooks Koepka is seeking to win the same major in back-to-back years for the third time in his career.
- Jordan Spieth is aiming to complete a career grand slam. He won the U.S. Open and Masters in 2015 and The Open Championship in 2017.
Spoiler alert, one of these golfers is on my outright card this week. Let’s get into it.
2024 PGA Championship betting card
Brooks koepka to win (+1600 at draftkings).
There have been patterns throughout Koepka’s career that are important to note.
The first is that he usually contends in majors when he plays well in the event leading up to it. The last time he teed it up was two weeks ago at LIV Singapore and he won by four strokes.
And when he wins a major, he has always defended it the next year. He won the U.S. Open in 2017 and 2018, and the PGA Championship in 2018 and 2019 before winning the tournament again last year.
He has a chance to do something really special this week. He’s a bomber off the tee, an elite iron player and he’s one of the most clutch putters in his generation.
Bryson DeChambeau to win (+2800 at FanDuel)
Another LIV Tour golfer, DeChambeau plays his best on long courses with thick rough. He won his first major at Winged Foot (2020 U.S. Open), which shares some similarities to Valhalla.
DeChambeau is one of the longest hitters in the field, was in contention at the Masters, and he’s had a strong year on LIV.
He is a solid all-around golfer who benefits from the thick rough given his strength and the fact that he’s hitting shorter irons than most of his competitors. That sets him up well for Valhalla.
Justin Thomas top-10 finish (+475 at bet365)
Thomas will be looking to add a third PGA Championship trophy to his mantle this week. While I’m not betting him outright, I do like his chances of being in the mix on Sunday.
His recent form doesn’t really stand out, but he has quietly posted top-12 finishes in nine of his last 14 starts worldwide.
He’s one of the best in the field tee-to-green, which is usually the most important statistic in majors. It’s also worth noting that this is a home game for him, as he grew up in Louisville.
Cameron Young top-10 finish (+450 at DraftKings)
While his around-the-green game can be spotty at times, he’s one of the longest hitters in the field and is one of the best on approach with long irons.
He also seems to play his best on difficult courses and that’s evident in his five top-10 finishes at the majors in his young career.
This is a perfect course fit for Young. Don’t be surprised to see him near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

Why Anthony Kim’s potential return to golf is such a big deal
The best way to explain the lore of Anthony Kim is to remind you that two of the most substantial publications of our time — Sports Illustrated and the New York Times — have both published sizable “Where has Anthony Kim gone?” investigations during the last decade. He is an enigma, coined by golf scribe Alan Shipnuck as “golf’s yeti.” He is simultaneously as famous for what he represented at a moment in time for the sport as he is for the mystery surrounding his disappearance.
Now, per Golf.com, Kim, 38, is plotting a return to professional golf 12 years after injuries led to him stepping away from the sport in 2012. The report states Kim is in talks with the PGA Tour , LIV and sponsors about the return as the three-time PGA Tour event winner weighs how and where to play golf in the future.
At the core of this potential return is the insurance policy Kim took out in case of injuries, reportedly worth between $10 and $20 million. That policy would be voided if he returned to play, potentially meaning any return must make up for that money.
Let’s look back at who Anthony Kim is, why was he such a big deal and how much is he worth to the two tours.
Who is Anthony Kim?
Before Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, Kim was golf’s great young prodigy, expected to take some portion of Tiger Woods’ place in golf’s limelight. The Los Angeles native played college golf at Oklahoma and played on a winning Walker Cup team before turning pro at 22. Kim won two PGA Tour events at Quail Hollow and TPC Potomac by his second full pro season and became the first golfer under 25 to win two tour events in the same season since Woods in 2000. By the end of that 2008 season, Kim was 23, No. 6 in the world and the top rising star in the sport.
With an extremely aggressive style of play and an outgoing personality, Kim immediately became a star in demographics golf didn’t always reach. He made the 2008 Ryder Cup team at 23 years old — very young for a spot on that team at that time — and he famously dominated Sergio Garcia with a 5&4 drubbing as the U.S. won for the first time in nine years. That next spring, Kim went to the 2009 Masters and broke the tournament record with 11 birdies in the second round. That may have turned out to be his peak.
Much of his rise came while playing through a thumb injury, which Kim later said he compensated for and created tendonitis in his wrist. He won one tournament from 2009 to 2011 as injuries piled up, and in 2012 he withdrew from three tournaments. He then ruptured his left achilles tendon in 2012, and he hasn’t played professional golf since.
What has added to the myth of Anthony Kim is his reclusive nature over the last 12 years, shying away from golf’s spotlight and leading a private life. Sightings of him are extremely rare. Players once close to him say they no longer have phone numbers for him. He never quite explained himself or where he went. He is a mystery.
Why was he such a big deal?
The way Woods dominated golf for so long created a golf media culture of constantly seeking the next Woods. Not even to find somebody who could come near Woods’ actual accomplishments, but somebody to take up some portion of the star power oxygen Woods held. It’s important to remember McIlroy was still a 19-year-old playing on the European Tour when Kim played in the Ryder Cup.
But Kim, a Korean American, was more than that. If Woods was so crucial for breaking down golf’s barriers involving race, Kim was the closest thing the sport had to an Allen Iverson in terms of breaking down its dry culture. He was brash, wore loud belt buckles and didn’t mind ruffling feathers. He didn’t shy away from the fact he liked to party. He went on Jay Leno and gave Jessica Alba a putting lesson, and played in the NBA Celebrity All-Star game.
Players from his generation still talk about him as if he was a combination of Woods’ talent with Phil Mickelson’s sense of charm and boldness on a golf course. Combine all of that with how good he actually was, and for about two years he was as exciting of a player as golf has seen. Then, he was gone.
The mystery of Kim
So much of the excitement about Kim’s return stems from the mystery. With each passing year that he’s been away from the tour, the fascination grows. In the era of TMZ, social media and constant exposure, somebody that talented practically disappearing is difficult for many to wrap their heads around.
The constant injuries certainly were a large part of his original absence, and that was the official word from his camp for most of the first few years after he left, but it became clear that Kim was receiving payments through the aforementioned insurance policy worth north of $10 million. As time went on, some close to Kim have told reporters Kim is healthy and still capable of playing great golf. In 2016, Kim said he hadn’t returned because he was still rehabbing, and in 2019 he called his golf game non-existent. The discrepancy between the two versions of Kim’s health only amplified the intrigue, and it continued speculation that the insurance policy was the focal point of it all. If he returned to professional golf, it would be voided.
As so many stories have detailed, Kim’s appearances have become like a Bigfoot-esque figure. He’d be seen at one bar or out at a store, but nobody had truly tracked him down in a substantial way.
The other wrinkle in his absence has been his relationship with golf. The New York Times story goes into detail on his declining passion for the game and his complicated relationship with his demanding father. Perhaps Kim simply didn’t want to come back. Or perhaps there were issues more complicated keeping him away.
But in 2021, Kim’s longtime coach Adam Schriber posted a photo of him and Kim together saying, “2021 is going to be special.” That reignited hope for a return, and Thursday’s report brought it back full throttle.
What is Kim’s actual value?
The report from Golf.com sent the golf media world into a frenzy. People started sharing favorite Kim memories and talking about what this would mean. But it brings up an interesting disconnect: How much value does a 38-year-old golfer with three PGA Tour wins actually have?
Reducing Kim to that statline misses a chunk of the story, but the reported negotiations between Kim, LIV and the PGA Tour indicate a possible battle for his services. The PGA Tour can’t offer him a lump sum, but there are surely ways it can maximize his revenue and give him opportunities to collect. Meanwhile, the story reported LIV has discussed a “one-year offer that would cover Kim’s insurance policy — again, in the area of $10 million — while allowing him to earn prize money and sponsor deals on top of that.”
But if money is the primary concern for Kim to return, he could theoretically earn the value of that insurance policy back if he could even become a decent PGA Tour player. The finances of a PGA Tour player are far different than when Kim played. Seven players made north of $10 million in 2023, while 36 players made $5 million. If he could even be the 62nd-best player on tour, he could make $3 million in winnings per year, plus sponsorships, and be back in profit within a few seasons. There’s also the PIP program which financially rewards players for their popularity — Kim would certainly qualify. And that doesn’t even mention LIV winnings, in which every single golfer who played at least 10 events made more than $3 million last year and 10 made more than $15 million.
There is confidence his game is still good, but it may be fair to say nobody is fighting to sign Kim in the hopes he wins majors and jumps to elite status. To some extent, any pursuit of Kim, who will be 39 later this year, is rooted in his name appeal and the intrigue that has followed him for so long. In a perfect world, he does become a great golfer again and provides golf’s story of the year. But there are also scenarios in which parties are fighting for a short-term novelty story.
Kim’s rise to stardom came through the PGA Tour, so it will certainly be understandable if he chooses that path. While LIV could potentially offer a safer return with less spotlight and expectation.
No matter what happens going forward, Kim’s journey will be a fascinating development. It always has been.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jordan Spieth knows it’s out there.
A win at this week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla would give him the fourth and final leg to a career grand slam, which just five players in the history of the sport have completed.
“I’m aware,” Spieth said. “It’s just kind of a cool thing if you’re able to hold all four. There’s just not many people in the game that have done that, and you have an opportunity to do things that are very unique in the game of golf.
“That’s what kind of stands out, stands the test of time afterwards, so, yeah, anytime we come to these weeks the idea is to have prep to try to peak for really four times a year, and this is one of them.’’
Max Homa, who’s played the best golf of his life the past couple of years and is a dark horse to win this week, spoke about the effect world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has had on him.
“It’s just motivating, it’s inspiring,’’ Homa said of Scheffler’s success. “Sometimes it’s pretty cool to see somebody kind of push the limit on what you thought was possible. I did not think you could hit a golf ball this well this long [as he does]. I did not know that was possible.
“We saw it with Tiger [Woods], but I wasn’t around then, and Tiger feels like a mythological creature, especially when you look back on some of those seasons he had from 2000 to 2008 or 2009 or whatever it was. I mean just like absurd golf.
“So to get to see that up close [by Scheffler] and know that that’s a real possibility, I think it’s super-motivating. I feel like it gives you something to work at. You really got to push yourself harder and reach even more for what you thought almost was unrealistic and start to realize that it is realistic, and if you want to win majors and you want to climb that world ranking, you’re going to have to do some special, special stuff.’’
Ludvig Aberg, the 22-year-old rising star from Sweden who was a key figure for the European Ryder Cup team in Italy, is playing this week after withdrawing from last week’s Wells Fargo in Charlotte with a knee injury.
He said his time off was merely precautionary, though he’s wearing a knee brace for the tournament this week.
“The knee’s good,’’ said Aberg, who was in contention at the Masters last month, his first career major. “It was more of a safety concern last week that I didn’t play. I’m consulting with my doctors and I trust them with everything that I have, so it’s not bothering me at all this week, and I look forward to playing.’’
Andy Svoboda might be a familiar name to see for New Yorkers watching the PGA Championship.
Though this is his first appearance in a PGA, the Westchester native played some on the PGA Tour before becoming a teaching pro.
He caddied at Winged Foot at 10 years old and played his college golf at St. John’s.
Svoboda is the head pro at Butler National Golf Club outside of Chicago.
He’s previously qualified for five U.S. Opens and won three times on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Rory mcilroy says pga tour ‘in a worse place’ with saudis after jimmy dunne’s resignation.
- Rex Hoggard ,
- Rex Hoggard
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Rory McIlroy called Jimmy Dunne’s resignation from the PGA Tour policy board “really, really disappointing” and said his confidence that the circuit can negotiate a deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment has been rocked.
Dunne – who was an architect of the framework agreement that ended years of costly litigation between the Tour and the Saudi-funded LIV Golf league and opened the door to a possible deal that would combine both products under a single, for-profit entity – announced Monday that he was resigning from the board because of the slow pace of negotiations and his perceived diminished role.
“Since the players now outnumber the independent directors on the board and no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF I feel like my vote and my role is utterly superfluous,” Dunne wrote in his resignation letter.
McIlroy, who has become an outspoken proponent of a deal with PIF, was denied a spot on the board last week but was named to the “transaction subcommittee,” which will spearhead the day-to-day negotiations. But the loss of Dunne will be a blow to those talks, the world No. 2 said.
“Honestly I think it’s a huge loss for the PGA Tour if they are trying to get this deal done with the PIF and trying to unify the game,” McIlroy said. “Jimmy was basically the relationship, the sort of conduit between the PGA Tour and PIF.
“It’s been really unfortunate that he has not been involved for the last few months, and I think part of the reason that everything is stalling at the minute is because of that.”
By most accounts, McIlroy and Dunne have been the two loudest voices supporting a deal with PIF that would combine the Tour, LIV Golf and the DP World Tour, and during his testimony before a U.S. Senate subcommittee last year, Dunne explained he convinced Tour commissioner Jay Monahan to reach out to PIF and was the first representative to meet face to face with the fund’s governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan.
“It’s really, really disappointing and I think the Tour is in a worse place because of it,” McIlroy continued. “We’ll see where it goes from here and we’ll see what happens.
“I would say my confidence level on something getting done before last week was as low as it had been and then with this news of Jimmy resigning and knowing the relationship he has with the other side and how much warmth there is from the other side, it’s concerning.”
Dunne was not named to the new PGA Tour Enterprises’ board of directors, which was formed this year and will ultimately decide if there will be a deal with PIF, and he said in his resignation letter that he has not “been asked to take part in negotiations with the PIF since June 2023.”

Came here with friends that were looking for tees and shoes and I simply tagged along. I wasn't here to buy anything for myself but if you're curious, the price tag for most women's clothing was $95+ for really cool designer brands like Lilly Pulitzer and vineyard vines. I've only ever used men's drivers because my 98 year old grandpa taught me driver basics and I've been teaching my partner what my grandpa has taught me. I was curious to try out women's sized drivers. I was really happy to see that there were virtual golf simulators in the back of the store to test out the variety of clubs before buying. Not sure if I'm ready to invest in a $200 driver, but I think one day I'll get there... it's a much different feeling than usually drivers that are way too big! Loved the simulator experience in the back of the store and how you can test if you're a righty or a lefty if you're starting golf.
Nice staff here. Casual golfer after getting addicted for awhile. There are some deals here. Yet a lot of times, online retailers are your friend. The key is knowing what you need. This store is good for ideas. I've bought clubs, hats, balls, and tees here. All have been pretty good. I do like their selection, as the store has literally everything. A huge place. If you are a fan of the sport, this could work out for you.

I walked around approximately 30 mins without ever being asked if I needed help. I was searching for used ping clubs (lefty) to try since I haven't upgraded in over 10 years. After not finding any demo clubs, I decided to grab a display iron to hit and found a ball in an unoccupied stall but was then asked If I was ok? I replied yes and explained what I came for and the gentleman said he would build one for me rather than hitting the display. (made sense) He put a High trajectory shaft on which I inquired what is this, since I have never heard of a high trajectory shaft but his response was "to help me hit it higher" while walking to attend another couple. I personally felt like my money didn't matter here and was really glad that there was not much more to choose from. I decided to buy a glove which took me another 20 mins to find (lefty) and was happy to be getting back into traffic. I can't say this experience happened because I'm black... Nevertheless, I didn't hit 1 ball straight but I blame fatigue for that. Another reviewer mentioned Golf Galaxy and I'm anxious to see what they have.
Dropped off my clubs to get regripped on Saturday 3/30. I was assisted by a very nice man who told me my clubs would be ready on Tuesday. No problem! Imagine my surprise when I got a text later that day they were ready to be picked up. Wow! Unfortunately, that was the end of my wonderful customer service. Sunday 3/31 I picked up my clubs and the helpful man I encountered on Saturday was replaced by a grumpy, not helpful person. I mentioned how impressed I was that my grips were done so quickly, and he nodded and walked away. As I brought the clubs to my car I noticed a black film all over my hands and coating the shafts. I brought them back in to show "Mr. Pleasant," and after taking a quick glance he announced the black tarry substance was a result of my old grips. OK, I thought, so clean it off. Nope, not even attempting to wipe them. I asked what he would recommend and he told me Goo Gone. Fine. I took my clubs to the car, and proceeded to wipe them off. The black stuff now is on my hands and pants. Not happy!!! I've had grips replaced before, and I've never had my clubs returned to me a black tarry mess. Is this standard practice for this store? If so, we won't be seeing each other ever again!
What an amazing store! They have lots of launch monitors and lots of demo clubs to hit without having to get into a sales discussion with an associate. The store has tons of gear, clubs, and apparel. It felt like Christmas Day walking around in their store!
This review is for the club fitting. I just finished an iron fitting with Erick and it was a really enjoyable experience! It was my first time being fit for clubs so I didn't know what to expect. Erick walked me through the process and showed me what he was looking for every time we tried a new club. He explained everything and didn't judge when I hit some bad shots! We eventually narrowed it down to the set that was right for me without any pressure or upselling. Highly recommend Erick! I'll be back when I need some new woods!

Great store with broad selection of everything golf. The practice bay areas and putting turf are great and have the latest technology and clubs for you to choose from. The clothing area is pretty large. The shoe department is loaded with plenty to choose from. I'd like to see more Nike shoes (Nike head). The club selection has all the latest clubs on the market. The used/clearance are is not bad but overtime when people make trade-ins, I expect there will be more variety. Customer service is good. There were new employees working the register so it may take a few weeks before they are seasoned. All in all a good store to add to the selection of golf stores in Northern VA.

Michael- Thank you so much for stopping by to see us on Grand Opening weekend. We are thrilled to be in Fairfax and looking forward to seeing you again!
Went in to have a new shaft for my putter and a new grip. I was very specific about the length and after over paying for the service, turns out the length was over 2inches off. They said I would have to pay again to have it redone. What a joke

I came here looking to specifically test diff. Taylor Made drivers, to get a new one--said it as soon as I walked in. Save yourself some time and frustration and just go to the Golf Galaxy 5 mins. from this place! I walked in around 8:45p, immediately was greeted by a nice young man and pointed in the direction of what I needed (I went to get a new driver) then said someone would "be right with you." Standing in the area where the mini-range is, I was approached by the worker, Todd who was immediately short-tempered & dismissive, saying I "won't have enough time to find a driver I want" instead of just diving in to provide assistance. I responded "I'm aware, i just got off work and rushed here, I live far"-- which I shouldn't of even had to say b/c the store was still open...We had a back & forth where i tried to explain I wasn't there to BUY (I just wanted to compare Men's drivers so I could make a decision in order to buy) which was wasted time because meanwhile there were already 3 other people hitting off bays. He then gave false information re: mens shaft, insisting it would decrease my yardage and once I finally got to a bay, instead of focusing on helping me figure out what was best, he was inattentive and focusing on the bay next to me, like didn't even explain the club speed or what I should even be looking for, quite literally handed me the club and walked off--but then proceeded to say "you just don't have the power in your swing for a mens shaft"-- I've used a mens driver the past 7yrs and have multiple golf coaches, but instead of listening to what works best for me, the customer, he was adamant about switching me to Women's... I could go on but I'll stop here. Maybe it was because they were about to close & he was tired, maybe he was upset that he had to help a black person, maybe he really didn't want me hitting a mens driver--hard to tell...but either way that's no way to approach ANY customer, but especially one who came intending to spend over $500-just close the Bay at a set time everyday so your employees don't have horrible attitudes like Todd's! He seriously needs some customer service training and perhaps the Manager Adam too (I think) -- he was standing in the area listening to the exchange (or maybe not listening) and watching the inattentive behavior. All in all, came to this place thinking it was the best option b/c of the great products in the store--but it's not. Don't come here if you want actual guided assistance by someone who loves the sport like me. I went to Golf Galaxy (Zach Or Kyle) immediately after and left with a mens Taylor Made Stealth HD pre-ordered see the pictures for a comparison.

Sydney, I want to start with thanking you for your feedback. We truly cannot grow and get better if we don't hear about these experiences. I am sorry to hear that you had such a negative experience with us. Our goal is to give every customer outstanding service. We clearly have failed you in this. I would love to hear more about your experience so that I can continue to coach my team and make sure that others do not have the same experience.
