DISTANCE LEADERS

You simply will not believe how many players averaged more than 300 yards in driving distance on the PGA Tour this season

1418273171

The PGA Tour season is over and Rory McIlroy walked away with the biggest prize , topping Scottie Scheffler in the Tour Championship last week at East Lake to collect $18 million.

So, before the next season starts in just two weeks, there’s time to scour the tour’s final statistics from the 2021-2022 season and look for interesting nuggets.

Look no further than driving distance.

For the first time in PGA Tour history, more than half the tour averaged at least 300 yards off the tee. A whopping 99 players out of 193 registered in the statistic eclipsed the magic number.

Sure, there are several factors for increased distances over the years, but we’re simply looking at the numbers. No more, no less.

RELATED: A drill that will have you hitting longer drives right away

Cameron Champ topped the list this season at 321.4 yards and McIlroy was close behind in second place at 321.3 yards. Scroll down the list and you’ll find both Hayden Buckley and Chris Kirk tied for 98th place at a 300.1 yards per drive average.

Alex Noren, at 100th, is the first player on the list sub-300 at 299.8 yards. Players Championship and Open Championship winner Cameron Smith is 101st at 299.7 yards.

Brian Stuard rounds out the list in 193rd place at 277.4, which coincidentally is the exact same average that tour leader John McComish recorded in 1983 during a season in which he made 13 of 27 cuts and collected two top-25 finishes.

john-daly-1996.jpg

John Daly was the first player in history to top a 300-yard driving average for the year when he did so in 1997 at 302.0 yards. He did not reach the mark the following year, but then did the next four consecutive years when he topped the overall statistic.

The list of leaders since 1980 can be found below, but here are some other comparisons from over the years.

In 1982, the 100th-ranked players in driving distance—Ben Crenshaw and George Archer—were at 254.9 yards. Ten years later it was 259.4 with Jeff Sluman and Leonard Thompson. In 2002, when Daly averaged over 300 yards, the 100th-ranked players—Brad Elder, Shigeki Maruyama, Mike Weir—were at 280.0. Ten years ago in 2012, Bubba Watson topped the list at 315.5 yards per drive and the 100th-ranked players—Tim Herron, Marc Leishman—were at 289.4 yards.

RELATED: First step in a rollback? Governing bodies announce plan in curtailing distance

Last year 61 players averaged at least 300 yards although 72 did so in 2020. Fifty reached the number in 2019, and only 27 did back in 2016.

As far as sheer drives of 300 or more yards on tour this last season, the PGA Tour supplied data to Golf Digest saying that 56,930 drives went at least that distance. For more context, that is 27.67 percent of drives on tour that went more than 300 yards.

Once you move up to the 350-yard mark, there were 3,775 drives of at least that distance. There were 74 drives of 400 yards or longer and yes, there was one recorded drive of at least 450 yards. Scott Stallings hit a mammoth shot of 460 yards on the 15th hole in the second round of the WM Phoenix Open. He tied for 21st place that week at TPC Scottsdale.

Here is a look at the driving distance leaders for each year since 1980:

How Far PGA Tour Players Carry Their Drives

What's the average carry of a PGA Tour player's drive, and how might that change in the future?

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Rory McIlroy during the Tour Championship at East Lake

The driving distance debate is one that stubbornly refuses to go away… although that’s something governing bodies the USGA and The R&A are probably hoping will change within a few years.

That’s because they have confirmed golf ball rollback plans that will see driving distances reduced at every level of the game, starting in 2028 in the professional game and from 2030 elsewhere. But how far do PGA Tour players currently carry their drives, and how will the changes affect the numbers?

Carry distance is an important stat to know, but why? Well, it’s one thing to know how far your drives have travelled after the ball has come to a stop, but if you’re weighing up potential problems ahead from the tee box, such as water, bunkers or rough, carry distance is the priority.

According to figures released by Trackman, which also show how far PGA Tour players hit every club in the bag , players on the circuit carry their drives an average 275 yards.

That's over nine yards more than in 2007, when the PGA Tour began keeping carry distance records. Back then, the average carry distance was 265.7 yards. As with driving distances on the PGA Tour , that has increased over the years, but it won't stay on that trajectory indefinitely, because of the changes coming in 2028.

That will see the game’s longest hitters lose between 13 and 15 yards of their total driving distance. However, the average elite male player will not be as affected and can expect a reduction of between nine and 11 yards. Naturally, this will have an effect on carry distance, too.

Of course, the very longest hitters and average elite players are all part of the overall Trackman average, but it’s probably safe to assume that the average carry distance after the rollback will be around 10 yards shorter, or approximately 265 yards - in other words, somewhere close to the 2007 level.

But what about the biggest hitter? After all, the further a player drives the ball, the more distance he will lose after the rollback. According to the PGA Tour website, Rory McIlroy , a key figure who supports the change , is at the top of the list for the 2022/23 season with an average driving distance of 326.3 yards.

Let’s say that average comes down by the top figure given by the governing bodies once the change comes in – 15 yards. That will reduce his average driving distance to 311.3 yards, or a 4.5% hit.

McIlroy’s average carry distance for the same season is 307.4 yards and 4.5% of that is 13.8 yards. That means his carry distance could come down to around 293.6 yards after the rollback.

A closer look at some of the stat leaders for the 2022-23 pga tour season, share this article.

pga tour driving average 2022

The Tour Championship is in the rearview mirror and with that, the PGA Tour has closed the book on its statistics for the 2022-23 season. If you’ve been to the Tour’s stats page, you know it’s a rabbit hole where golf nerds can spend hours exploring the numbers.

There are plenty of eye-popping numbers, including the massive increase in earnings, but many will use these stats to determine the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year.

For example, Jon Rahm had the most wins (4), with Viktor Hovland winning the final two stops of the year to finish second with three victories. There were seven others, including Scottie Scheffler, another POY candidate, with two wins.

But it was Scheffler who dominated many of the Tour’s stats this season. He finished first in the Official World Golf Ranking, FedEx Cup regular-season standings, Ryder Cup standings as well as all of these categories:

  • Shots gained: Off the tee
  • Shots gained: Approach the green
  • Shots gained: Tee-to-green
  • Shots gained: Total
  • Greens in regulation percentage

Scoring average

  • Bogey avoidance

Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting statistical leaders on the PGA Tour for the 2022-23 season. Many of these will seem obvious, but there’s probably a few here that are surprising.

Driving distance

2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship

Rory McIlroy won his third driving title this season (he also won in 2017, 2018), as he averaged 326.3 yards per drive. That’s more than 5.1 yards per drive longer than the next guy on the list, Brandon Matthews (321.2). It’s also the longest since the Tour started keeping the stat in 1980. Bryson DeChambeau’s 323.7 yards per drive in 2021 was the previous mark and McIlroy topped that by nearly three yards. Cameron Young (316.9), Cameron Champ (316.1) and Matti Schmid (315.8) round out the top five.

The PGA Tour average for driving distance is 299.9. There were 92 golfers who averaged more than 300 yards per drive.

Scottie Scheffler was anything but average as he posted 68.629 for the season. Rory McIlroy (68.777) was not far behind. Those were the only two to go sub-69 for the season. Jon Rahm (69.037) was third with Xander Schauffele (69.083) fourth and Viktor Hovland (69.123) fifth.

Notable is that Scheffler played 88 Tour rounds this season, 24 more than McIlroy and 17 more than Rahm.

The Tour average was 71.091.

Brian Harman, Champion Golfer of the Year after winning his first major at the 2023 Open Championship, led this category at 67.74 percent.

The Tour average was 58.45.

Jonathan Byrd (66.35) was second to Harman, while Matt Kuchar (65.76) was third. J.J. Spaun (65.74) and Tommy Fleetwood (65.47) are fourth and fifth, respectively.

2023 Players Championship

Scheffler set the mark for most money earned in a single season during the 2021-22 campaign with more than $14 million.

This season, thanks to two victories, in particular the Players Championship, and his 15 top 10s, Scheffler went over the $20 million mark, the first-ever to do so. To be exact, he made $21,014,342 .

Add up just his last two seasons and Scheffler has banked more than $35 million dollars. His career total is $40 million.

Wellesley’s Michael Thorbjornsen had the distance but struggled with putter in first round as PGA Tour pro at Travelers Championship

Michael Thorbjornsen didn’t make much noise for the first 17 holes of his first round as a PGA Tour professional on Thursday.

Then he got to the 18th.

The 22-year-old Wellesley native blasted a 361-foot drive on the 446-yard par-4, the longest tee shot by any player on any hole during the first day of the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.

Thorbjornsen, who recently earned his tour card after finishing atop the PGA Tour University standings during his senior season at Stanford, carded a 2-over-par 72 and is tied for 61st, 10 strokes behind leader Tom Kim in the 70-player field.

Thorbjornsen, who finished fourth as an amateur at the 2022 Travelers, finished with two birdies and four bogeys. He started strong with a birdie on the par-4 second hole thanks to a 39-yard second shot that he dropped 18 inches from the cup, but balanced out his front nine with a bogey on the par-5 sixth, a 572-yard behemoth.

After seven consecutive pars from Nos. 7-13, Thorbjornsen finished with three bogeys and a birdie in his final five holes.

After bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17, his booming drive on No. 18 set him up for a 2-foot par putt.

He finished the day No. 1 in driving distance (332.9 yards) but tied for 26th in driving accuracy and 69th in putting.

Thorbjornsen and Ludvig Aberg tee off at 10:50 a.m. on Friday.

Michael Thorbjornsen averaged 332.9 yards per drive, which led the field in Round 1.

SAMMAMISH, Wash. — The 2024 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is being contested at Sahalee Country Club, a visually intimidating major test that will be a challenge for the world’s best players this week in Sammamish, Wash. Difficult conditions are often the great equalizer at major championships, leveling the playing field for the 156 athletes competing, but some players still have slight statistical advantages on which they hope to capitalize as they work to capture some of the biggest titles in all of women’s golf.

Take a look at just a few of those athletes teeing it up this week at Sahalee for the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship:

Allisen Corpuz

Allisen Corpuz currently leads the LPGA Tour in driving accuracy this season, hitting the fairway off the tee 86.6 percent of the time, a number that equates to her finding the short grass on 518 of 598 total drives. Sahalee has incredibly narrow visuals off the tee, views that are intimidating to even the most storied of LPGA Tour veterans. But with tee shots that fly as straight as those of Corpuz, the Hawaii native should be able to consistently find the fairway throughout the course of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, something that should translate to more hit greens in regulation and birdie opportunities for the 26-year-old.

According to KPMG Performance Insights, Corpuz has struck the ball well in major championships over the last two seasons, ranking fifth in strokes gained ball striking (+1.46), sixth in strokes gained approach (+1.06) and sixth in strokes gained total since the major season began in 2023. She became a Rolex First-Time Winner at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links last July and finished in the top 15 of three other major championships last season – tying for fourth at The Chevron Championship, tying for 15th at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and tying for sixth at the AIG Women’s Open.

Her 2023 major prowess hasn’t yet translated to the 2024 season, but considering her success at some of golf’s most challenging venues, Corpuz is a player who shouldn’t be left out of the contention conversation this week in Washington.

Brooke Henderson

Brooke Henderson might seem like an obvious player to watch at Sahalee Country Club, particularly as she won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship the last time the championship was contested at this venue in 2016. But her statistics indicate that a third major title could be just around the corner for the Canadian, and why couldn’t it come at a place at which Henderson has a resoundingly positive history?

According to KPMG Performance Insights, the 26-year-old leads in strokes gained total per round in all major championships since the beginning of the 2021 season, picking up an average of 2.15 shots on the field in each round of the LPGA Tour’s five major tournaments in the last four years. In that span, Henderson has won her second career major title at the 2022 Amundi Evian Championship and earned an additional nine top-15 finishes, one of which came earlier this season when she tied for third at The Chevron Championship. She is also at the front of the pack in major championships when it comes to scoring average and score to par, recording a 70.60 stroke average and shooting 59 under par across the 17 majors that have been played since the start of the 2021 LPGA Tour season.

As it pertains to Sahalee, Henderson is fairly long and fairly accurate off the tee, hitting it an average of 264.375 yards with her driver and finding the fairway 74.1 percent of the time while doing so. She is ranked ninth in strokes gained driving (+0.63), 10th in strokes gained total (+1.39) and 17th in strokes gained tee to green (+1.14) on the LPGA Tour so far this season, per data provided by KPMG Performance Insights. Couple that excellent ball-striking with a venue at which Henderson knows how to win, and the Canadian just might be deadly this week at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Rose Zhang recently collected her second career LPGA Tour title last month at the Cognizant Founders Cup, winning by two shots over Madelene Sagstrom at Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, N.J. While it doesn’t even slightly compare to the narrowness that Zhang and the rest of the field are facing off the tee this week at Sahalee Country Club, Upper Montclair is quite tight in spots, making her recent success in the Garden State a potential weapon for Zhang to wield in Washington State.

Zhang ranks 16th on the LPGA Tour in driving accuracy, hitting 279 of her 350 total fairways this season, a conversion rate of 79.7 percent. According to KPMG Performance Insights, the 21-year-old is tied for fifth in most strokes gained tee to green per round in major championships over the last two seasons, as Zhang has picked up 1.62 shots on the field with her long game. Additionally, Zhang is ranked second in strokes gained approach (+1.34), third in strokes gained total (+1.98) and fifth in strokes gained tee to green (+1.46) so far this year, an amalgamation of stats that could be a deadly combination at a course like Sahalee that requires precise ball striking.

The Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 9 is another player who seems to thrive in difficult conditions, as Zhang finished in a tie for eighth at last year’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course and then tied for ninth at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links, and she just might contend again this week at Sahalee considering that fact.

Madelene Sagstrom

It was Madelene Sagstrom who went toe-to-toe with Zhang last month in New Jersey, and while the Swede ultimately fell to the American at the Cognizant Founders Cup, her performance in the Garden State could be a good indicator of how she fares this week at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Even though Sahalee is much narrower off the tee than Upper Montclair, her ability to keep the ball in the fairway that week led to a litany of birdie and eagle opportunities, many of which the 31-year-old took advantage of en route to posting a four-round total of 22-under to finish 13 strokes ahead of her next closest competitor.

Sahalee likely won’t be giving up that many shots to the 156-player field this week, but Sagstrom is a player who, on paper, just might be able to throw a few punches at this formidable venue. She isn’t exceptional when it comes to driving accuracy, only finding the fairway 66.9 percent of the time off the tee, but Sagstrom does rank 10th on the LPGA Tour in average driving distance (273.640 yards), length that is typically a benefit during major championships. She is also ranked 12th in strokes gained driving, according to KPMG Performance Insights, picking up 0.59 shots on the field with her shots off the tee.

Sagstrom has also been deadly with her putter this year, ranking fifth on the LPGA Tour in strokes gained putting (+0.96), and if she can combine solid ball striking with a hot putter, we might see the Swede contend for her second career LPGA Tour title at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

2024 travelers championship prop bet picks and pga tour predictions, share this article.

The PGA Tour is in Cromwell, Conn., this week for the 2024 Travelers Championship – the last designated event of the season with a limited, loaded field. Seventeen of the top 20 players in the last Sagarin Golfweek rankings are set to tee it up starting Thursday, led by No.1  Scottie Scheffler .

Below, we search for the best value prop bets from BetMGM Sportsbook among the 2024 Travelers Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Scheffler, despite finishing 41st in the U.S. Open where he made only 4 birdies in 4 rounds (he averages 5.5 birdies per round!), is the favorite again this week (+350). Scheffler has won 3 of the 8 signature events this season. He’s followed on the favorites board by Xander Schauffele (+750), Collin Morikawa (+1000) and Ludvig Aberg (+1400). Defending champion Keegan Bradley , who won with a record 23-under-par 257, opens at +5000.

Following his stunning collapse in the U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy withdrew on Monday and said he is taking some time off before switching his focus to the upcoming Scottish Open (July 11-14) and The Open (July 17-21).

TPC River Highlands is a par-70, 6,841-yard course which features some iconic finishing holes – including the driveable par-4 15th and the par-4 17th hole that bends around a pond.

2024 Travelers Championship – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 11:07 a.m. ET.

Brian Harman (+550)

The 2023 Open winner has made the cut in 11 of his 13 Travelers with 5 top-10 finishes in the last 6 years – a T-2 last year after a T-8, T-5, T-8 and T-6. He has fired 13 straight rounds in the 60s at TPC River Highlands and is a combined 41-under-par in the last 3 years. If you’re not comfortable with him top 5, consider top 10 (+250) for a nice payout.

Xander Schauffele (+150)

You could consider Schauffele in this category every week. This year’s PGA Championship winner has 6 top-5 finishes and 11 top 10s in 15 starts. He tied for 7th at the U.S. Open at 1-under, one of only 8 players under par at Pinehurst. He has made the cut in 4 of his 5 Travelers, winning in 2022 (19-under) and finishing 19th last year, 20th in 2020 and 14th in 2017.

Scottie Scheffler (-145)

So he can’t win every week. But the 27-year-old pro is almost an automatic top-5 finisher with 10 in his 14 starts, including 5 wins, so it might be worth the juice. He’s played in 4 Travelers – a MC in 2020, T-47, T-13 and T-4 last year at 19-under, 4 shots back. Expect the world’s No. 1 player to rebound from his poor Open and be among the leaders this week.

2024 Travelers Championship – Top-10 picks

Keegan bradley (+300).

The defending champ and New England native has 3 top 10s and 6 top-25 finishes in 13 Travelers. He fired rounds of 62-63-64-68 in winning last year with a tournament record 23-under. That can’t be ignored.

Collin Morikawa (-110)

He’s only played in 3 Travelers and has a T-36 and 2 missed cuts. But after a 74 in the 1st round last year he fired a 7-under 63 to miss the cut by 1 stroke. He’s tied for 3rd on the tour with 6 top-10 finishes this season and was T-14 (+2) in the U.S. Open, which included the best 3rd round at 4-under 66.

Sahith Theegala (+110)

He’s coming off a tie for 32nd in the U.S. Open (+7). He missed the cut in his debut here in 2020, but returned in 2022 to finish 2nd at 17-under-par. He was 52nd last year. He’s tied for 6th on tour with 5 top-10 finishes and if you like Theegala for a top 20, you might also consider him at +280 for a top-10 finish.

Other T10 contenders ( in order from longest odds to shortest ):

  • Viktor Hovland (+160)
  • Patrick Cantlay (+160)

2024 Travelers Championship – Top-20 picks

J.t. poston (+188).

He’s tied for 12th on tour with 4 top-10 finishes and, like Morikawa, missed the cut here last year by 1 stroke. But he’s made the cut the 4 other times he’s played the Travelers and he finished 2nd here in 2022, just 2 strokes behind Schauffele at 17-under which included rounds of 62 and 64. He might even be worth a shot at a top-10 finish (+450) for a bigger payout.

Harris English (+200)

The 34-year-old pro has played 10 Travelers and won here in 2021 (13-under) after an 8-hole playoff with Kramer Hickok. He followed that up with a T-19 in 2022 and a T-60 last year. The 4-time tour winner was 8-over at the U.S. Open to tie for 41st. He has 8 top 25s and 2 top 10s in 16 starts this season.

Russell Henley (-145)

The 35-year-old Georgian is having an excellent season and ranks 6th on tour with 5 top-10 finishes in 14 events, including a 7th-place finish Sunday at Pinehurst. Henley has played 6 Travelers and was 6th in 2018 and T19 the past 2 times he’s played (‘21, ‘23).

Other T20 contenders ( in order from longest odds to shortest ):

  • Adam Scott (+200)
  • Tom Kim  ( +120 )
  • Justin Thomas (+120)

2024 Travelers Championship – First-round leader

Patrick cantlay (+2800; 1st-round top 10 +250).

Coming off an excellent U.S. Open where he shared the 1st-round lead and was in contention on Sunday, Cantlay’s 1st-round scores at TPC River Highlands the last 6 years are 65, 64, 68, 66, 66, 69.

Adam Scott (+5000; 1st-round top 10 +300)

He shot 62 last year in the opening round and played very well at the U.S. Open, except for a 3rd-round 76.

MacKenzie Hughes (+9000)

He has shot 67 or better in his last 4 opening rounds at the Travelers, including a 60 in 2020. He only ranks 103rd in Round 1 scoring average for the season (70.86), but TPC River Highlands fits his game.

2024 Travelers Championship – Top Brit and Irish

Matt fitzpatrick (+350).

With McIlroy out, Tommy Fleetwood is the favorite at -188 with Shane Lowry  at +400, Robert MacIntyre at +650, Justin Rose at +750 and Seamus Power at +900. Fitzpatrick, who has only played the Travelers twice (a missed cut in 2020 and T-49 last year), was 64th at the U.S. Open after a 5th-place finish at the Memorial. He ranks 24th in driving accuracy and 18th in putting average.

Will there be a playoff yes: (+350).

The winning score has been at least 15-under in 7 of last 10 tournaments with 4 playoffs since 2013.

Will there be a hole in one? Yes: (+750)

There have been 38 aces at TPC River Highlands, including the 1st hole-in-one in McIlroy’s PGA Tour career during the 1st round last year (he aced the 214-yard par-3 8th hole with a 5-iron). The tournament has also produced an ace in 2021, 2020, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015.

Wellesley’s Michael Thorbjornsen had the distance but struggled with putter in first round as PGA Tour pro at Travelers Championship

Michael Thorbjornsen averaged 332.9 yards per drive, which led the field in Round 1.

Thorbjornsen and Ludvig Aberg tee off at 10:50 a.m. on Friday.
