Understanding Monday Qualifiers—from the basics to the super-nerdy and everything in between

This article originally appeared on the Fire Pit Collective , a Golf Digest content partner.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/firepit-monday-q-faq/MonQ-1.jpg

As more people are following Monday qualifiers, I have put together a fact sheet about them. This column will cover only PGA Tour Monday Qs; I will do LPGA, KFT and Champions in later articles.

What is a Monday Qualifier?

It is an 18-hole event held the Monday prior to a select number of tour events. The PGA, LPGA, KFT, Latinoamerica, and Canada tours all hold Monday Qs. The European Tour does not. The players with the four lowest scores get into that week’s event.

Who is eligible for the Monday Qualifier?

Not just anyone can sign up for a Tour Monday Qualifier. Here are the players who can sign up directly. The rest have to go through a pre-qualifier (explained below).

  • Current year’s PGA Tour members who are not in that week’s field
  • Current year’s KFT and Champions Tour members
  • Maximum of three section members (teaching pros from that PGA Section)
  • Former PGA Tour members from 2018 to ’21
  • Non-members in the Top 100 OWGR
  • Non-members who played in the previous week’s PGA Tour event
  • Non-members who have made a cut on the PGA Tour during the season

All others must play in a pre-qualifier just to get into the Monday Qualifier.

What is a pre-qualifier?

Basically, it is a qualifier before the qualifier. It is often held the Thursday prior to the Monday Q. (There are often multiple pre-q’s for an event, so some are played as early as Tuesday of the week prior.) The number of players who get through is based on the number of players the PGA Tour anticipates will be signed up for the Monday Q. The Tour tries to keep the Monday fields around 75. This is impossible in some cases; for example, the Korn Ferry Tour has an off week. But the number getting through the pre-qualifier varies based on the Monday field.

For example, the Waste Management Open has eight or nine pre-qualifiers with just two spots (plus ties) available at each. At some opposite-field events, as many as 20-plus spots are available at the pre-qualifier.

The entry fee for a pre-qualifier is $250. Your reward for getting through is to pay another $250 to tee it up in the Monday Qualifier.

If you are an amateur (yes, you can enter as an Am), you must have an Index of 2.0 or less to enter. If you mark “pro” when entering, event organizers don’t ask for an index.

What does it cost to enter a Monday Q?

The entry fee is based on a player’s status. Here is a breakdown:

  • Current PGA Tour member $0
  • Current KFT member $100
  • Current Champions member $100
  • Canada/LA member $300
  • 2018-21 PGA Tour member $500
  • Exempt Section member $500
  • Everyone else $500

How many spots are available?

Four. The only event that has less is the Waste Management Monday Q, which has three.

Has a Monday Qualifier gone on to win that week’s Tour event?

Yes. Four times.

Kenny Knox — 1986

Fred Wadsworth —1986

Arjun Atwal — 2010

Corey Conners — 2019

Does every event have a Monday Qualifier?

No. Invitationals such as the Genesis, Arnold Palmer, Players, Heritage and Memorial do not. There are 25 Monday Qs in the 2021-22 season.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/firepit-monday-q-faq/MonQ-2.jpg

The Somewhat Nerdy

How do guys get into a pre-qualifier and shoot 95 and higher?

As I mentioned above, if you sign up as a “pro” there is no handicap requirement. So some guy who says he shoots 75 each week clicks pro , and he’s in. It is impossible for the section to vet everyone who signs up.

By clicking pro , if following the letter of the law, it would prevent you from playing any amateur events, including member-guests, club events, etc. But no one tracks that, so these guys go back to playing in whatever tournaments they want.

What is the highest score shot in a pre-qualifier?

I’ve seen a 123. Most section officials will pull a player off the course when they see he is on his way to shooting a big number.

What has been the biggest playoff in a Monday Q?

On the Tour side, it happened at the Honday Monday Q just a few weeks ago. Rick Lamb eagled the first hole to abruptly end a 16-for-1 playoff.

Years ago, there was a 19-for-1 on the Korn Ferry Tour.

My favorite story came in a 14-for-1 in a KFT Monday. A friend played in the morning wave and didn’t think he had a chance after shooting 69. He went to a casino to wait things out and had multiple beers. After consuming too many beers, he realized he was going to be in a huge playoff. Drank as much water as he could, went back to the course, and birdied the first hole to get through.

What percentage of Monday Qualifiers make the cut at the event?

In the time I have been tracking (about four years), it is around 28 percent.

What scores does it take to get through a Monday Q?

I didn’t do full-season stats on scores last season, but I did the previous three. The medalist score over those three years averaged 64.6. The fourth spot averaged just over 66. Often the last spot is decided by a playoff.

Here are the numbers from the three years I kept detailed stats. (One day I’ll have time to do that again.)

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/firepit-monday-q-faq/MonQ-3.jpg

Who has played the most Monday Qualifiers?

I don’t have any stats on this, but my educated guess would be Brad Adamonis or Frank Lickliter III (affectionately known as The Blade). Rarely is a Monday held without one or both of them in the field. Adamonis lost his Tour status in 2009 and after a few years on the Nationwide Tour has chased Mondays for the better part of 10 years. I’ve often asked how many times he has played, and he just laughs. But my guess is well over 200.

To give you an idea of how many qualifiers the 49-year-old Adamonis has played in, let’s revisit a week last year. Adamonis went to a pre-q for a Tour event on Thursday. He didn’t get through. He then drove to play in a Latinoamerican Tour (played in Florida) Monday Q. (It was played on a Friday.) He didn’t get through there, so he drove to the KFT Monday and played that. That itinerary is the stuff of a grinding legend.

The Blade, 52, has a reputation for being a bit prickly, so although I see him at Mondays, I have never asked him about his total. But it’s in the same ballpark as Adamonis’s. (Google “Frank Lickliter knife” to learn how he got his nickname.)

Who has gotten through the most in a season?

TJ Vogel did it eight times in 2018. It is a record that I believe will not be broken. It is also greatly underappreciated as far as records go in golf. His scores:

64 to get into the RSM

64 to get into the Honda

63 to get into the Valspar

65 to get into the Wells Fargo

66 to get into the Byron Nelson

66 to get into the St. Jude

65 to get into the Greenbrier

66 to get into the Wyndham

Let those scores sink in. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to capitalize, making three of eight cuts with a best finish of 16th place. Vogel, 31, is a member of the KFT.

In 2012 a certain fella named Patrick Reed made it through six Monday qualifiers, with his then-financée, Justine, on the bag. He played well in most of those events and, along with some exemptions, parlayed it into a Tour card.

Who are some players who changed their career recently with a successful event after a Monday Q?

Corey Conners Although he was already a Tour member, his win at the 2019 Valero accelerated the trajectory of his career tenfold. The next week he made the cut at the Masters. He is 43rd in the world rankings.

Russell Knox Though it came on a KFT Monday, his subsequent runner-up finish changed his career. Knox was dominating the mini-tours for years but always struggled at Q-school, missing multiple times. He has more than $20 million in worldwide earnings.

Patrick Reed See above.

Chase Seiffert An amazing college career didn’t translate to the pro game, and Seiffert struggled for years to gain traction. In 2018, five years into his pro career, he Monday’d into the Travelers. His T9 (his only made cut of the season) was enough to get him into the KFT Finals. Although he didn’t get his Tour card, he did the following year via the KFT.

Doc Redman The U.S. Amateur champ was struggling and had missed at KFT Q-school and Latinoamerica Q-school. He had flown in from the West Coast the previous night and arrived at the Rocket Mortgage Monday in 2019 having never seen the course. He shot 62 and then finished second in the event, gaining status.

Cameron Young He, too, was a world-class amateur, and last year, with no status, he Monday-qualified for a KFT event. He finished 11th, earning a spot in the following week’s event. He finished T14 in that event, earning another start, then had a T6 and a T2, earning membership.

Will Zalatoris Same as Cameron Young. It all started with a KFT Monday.

The Ultra Nerdy

Who runs the qualifiers?

The PGA of America section in the area of the tournament runs the qualifier, but the Tour has final approval on all things. The Tour decides how many get through each pre-qualifier and gets a big share from the entry fees.

Who gets the money from the entry fees?

The Tour collects around 35 percent. The amount varies depending on the mix of players and the entry fees. Because the Tour doesn’t have many (if any) expenses, it can be a good moneymaker.

In most cases the course is paid by the round: anywhere from $50 to $80. It depends on the area the event is being held and the time of the season.

The section gets the rest, but is also responsible for all of its own expenses. It pays for its staff (including travel costs), rules officials, food, etc.

How are courses chosen?

One challenge is finding courses to host events. Monday qualifiers are no different.

When courses were hurting for traffic, finding courses wasn’t difficult. A Monday in most parts of the country isn’t a popular golf day, and a course could fill up the tee sheet and profit from a Monday Q.

Those times have changed. Most courses have tee sheets that are filled daily, at peak prices, so it’s hard to persuade it to close for a day (plus provide practice rounds on Sundays) when it can fill up the sheet with full-paying customers.

That’s a long-winded way to say a lot of it now comes down to finding a course that is relatively close to the event and willing to host it. All while meeting the budget at a price point that works for everyone. It’s a difficult balance.

In our podcast “The Grind,” we talked to the South Florida PGA Section about that challenge.

What are some of the craziest things that have happened at a Monday or pre-qualifier?

The Cowboy Qualifier He is by far my favorite because it isn’t an act. Below is a picture of him at the Valero Monday Qualifier. He is in his full cowboy outfit. In a pod with me, he explained how he arrived at the attire. He used a knife to repair ball marks and fix divots. HE USED A KNIFE TO REPAIR BALL MARKS. I love everything about him.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/firepit-monday-q-faq/MonQ-5.jpg

Connor Murphy This one is not as fun because it ended up being a stunt for his YouTube channel. But he showed up wearing a leprechaun suit and pulling his clubs in a wagon. Later in the year, Murphy ran down the middle of a fairway at the U.S. Open and was arrested. The podcast he did with the Fore the People guys is something. Listen here .

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/firepit-monday-q-faq/MonQ-6.jpg

The Fight When Fox News featured the story on its main page, I knew it was big. Two players at a KFT Monday had a disagreement that ended with one player getting arrested, one player WD’ing because of injuries and the third player in the group giving a police report in the middle of his round. It still stands as the most popular article in Fire Pit history.

I’m not sure we will ever top that one. But in the Monday Q world, you never know.

Patrick Flavin medals, successfully qualifying for the fourth time this season

Change Text Size

TORONTO, Ont. – Patrick Flavin is getting pretty used to this Monday qualifier thing.

Especially if they’re for events outside the United States.

“For some reason I have the international ones covered,” Flavin said with a laugh after earning medalist honors at the RBC Canadian Open’s Monday qualifier.

It was his fourth successful Monday this season to go along with the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, the Puerto Rico Open, and the Mexico Open at Vidanta.

Flavin was 1 over through nine holes at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Toronto but fired a 4-under 31 on his back nine to finish at 3 under. His performance could give him a good preview of next year’s RBC Canadian Open, which is scheduled to be played at Oakdale.

Brad Adamonis, former NCAA champ Braden Thornberry, and Jeffrey Kang got through a 4-for-3 playoff after finishing at 2 under. Adamonis was in a playoff with Kenny Perry at the John Deere Classic 14 years ago while Thornberry was college golf’s player of the year in 2017 and on the stacked U.S. Walker Cup team alongside Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Cameron Champ and others.

Oakdale has never hosted the RBC Canadian Open before and Flavin said he was “impressed” at the classic Canadian layout.

“Obviously having the Canadian Open next year, it’s going to be a great golf course,” he said. “It’s so hard so I really didn’t have a number in mind. My experience in these Mondays … you never know what it takes.

“I was 1 over through nine and I knew I had to get it going. With how tough it was playing and with the wind and the golf course in general, I knew I was still in it. I was happy to play really well on the back nine and … I honestly can’t believe it.”

Flavin has played five PGA TOUR events this season and has earned 76 non-member FedExCup points. He’ll qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals if he can earn an amount of points greater than or equal to No. 200 on this season’s FedExCup points list after the Wyndham Championship. Bronson Burgoon, who has 80 points, currently sits 200th in the FedExCup standings.

Flavin says he usually gets “distracted” by having to arrange logistics and the travel while playing a schedule of Monday qualifiers, but earning enough Non-Member FedExCup points remains “the carrot” he’s chasing.

And so far, he’s doing a solid job with that chase.

“I’ve gotten into a really nice mentality of enjoying the competition and enjoying the grind of it,” he said. “I don’t think there is a better feeling in the world than Monday qualifying because you’ve accomplished something that’s so hard, and you still have the tournament to look forward to. It’s a dream come true. I’m thrilled.”

Here’s a capsule look at the four Monday qualifiers for this week’s RBC Canadian Open.

Braden Thornberry (69; advanced in 4-for-3 playoff)

Age: 25 Hometown: Germantown, Tennessee Alma mater: Mississippi PGA TOUR starts: 9 Cuts made: 4 Best PGA TOUR finish: T4, 2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic

PGA TOUR Canada Announces 2023 Qualifying Tournament Schedule

Courtesy Press Release

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida — PGA TOUR Canada announced Wednesday it will hold six Qualifying Tournaments to determine Tour membership for the 2023 season, with registration beginning Monday, January 9, 2023, at noon EST.

The Tour will hold five Qualifying Tournaments in the U.S., beginning in late-February, and conclude with its final qualifier in Canada at BC's Crown Isle a week before the Tour’s regular season, its ninth in history, begins.

PGA TOUR Canada completed its season in September, crowning the Fortinet Cup Points List leader – Edmonton’s Wil Bateman – as Player of the Year.

Bateman became the inaugural winner of the Fortinet Cup after winning twice in 2022 and is now a fully exempt member of the Korn Ferry Tour for the 2023 season. Players hoping to follow in Bateman’s footsteps can begin by earning PGA TOUR Canada membership, with playing spots available at the six Qualifying Tournaments. Players can access the registration site here . “We are coming off a remarkably successful season, and we will continue to build on that momentum in 2023. The first steps are at our Qualifying Tournaments, where players can get on the path that will take them to their ultimate destination, which is the PGA TOUR,” said PGA TOUR Canada Executive Director Scott Pritchard.

“Through the years, we’ve been fortunate that so many players are interested in pursuing their professional dreams by playing on PGA TOUR Canada. We anticipate there will be strong demand by players to come to our Tour, as players know about the quality of courses, the cities we visit and the caliber of competition PGA TOUR Canada offers.” The qualifiers begin with two tournaments in Florida (Weston and Howey-in-the-Hills) on consecutive weeks in late-February, early March. The action starts February 21-24 at The Club at Weston Hills’ Tour Course, as it hosts a Qualifying Tournament for a second consecutive year.

The Howey-in-the-Hills tournament is at historic Mission Inn Resort and Club, a long-time host of both PGA TOUR Canada and PGA TOUR Latinoamérica tournaments. It has hosted six previous PGA TOUR Canada qualifiers. The following week, the RTJ Golf Trail at Highland Oaks in Dothan, Alabama, is the site for a third consecutive year. A month later, the qualifiers move west, with events at Wigwam Golf Club in the Phoenix suburb of Litchfield Park, Arizona (April 4-7) and at Soboba Springs Golf Course in San Jacinto, California (April 11-14). Notable PGA TOUR members to emerge from these sites in recent years include Cameron Young (medalist at Dothan in 2020), Will Zalatoris (runner-up at Wigwam Golf Club in 2019), Alex Smalley (T3 at Howey-in-the-Hills in 2020), Hayden Buckley (T4 at Wigwam Golf Club in 2019), Carson Young (T7 at Howey-in-the-Hills in 2020) and Philip Knowles (T9 at Howey-in the-Hills in 2019). Bateman finished T5 at the Wigwam Golf Club site in 2021, retained membership for 2022 via the points list and won the Fortinet Cup with his two-win season. The final Qualifying Tournament is set for June 6-9 in Courtenay, British Columbia. Crowne Isle Resort and Golf Club has previously hosted seven Qualifying Tournaments. PGA TOUR Canada’s season begins the week after this Q-School. Here is a look at the six tournaments that will all be 72-hole, Tuesday-to-Friday, no-cut events:

pga tour canada monday qualifying

“This is a great lineup of tournaments that will test players’ skills and abilities. Those who emerge with Tour cards will have another strong PGA TOUR Canada schedule to play in 2023, with a chance to continue progressing in their professional careers,” Pritchard added.

Among player benefits available, a three-time winner on the Tour would earn automatic promotion to the Korn Ferry Tour. Additionally, the top five players on the 2023 Fortinet Cup Points List will receive 2024 Korn Ferry Tour membership, with the player finishing first earning fully exempt status.

The top five players will also be exempt into the Final Stage of the 2023 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament, competing for a PGA TOUR card, which will be awarded to top-five finishers and ties. Those in the sixth-through-25th Fortinet Cup positions are exempt into the Second Stage of the 2023 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament.

In addition, the top 60 players on the final Fortinet Cup standings will retain their PGA TOUR Canada playing privileges for 2024.

PGA TOUR Canada will announce its complete regular season schedule in early 2023.

Canadian amateur champ crashes the party at U.S. Open qualifying site packed with PGA Tour talent

R IDGEWAY, Ontario – Of the top 18 finishers at the U.S. Open Final Qualifying at Cherry Hill Club, 17 were card-carrying members of the PGA Tour who had played last week at the RBC Canadian Open. Then there was Michigan State rising senior Ashton McCulloch, the Canadian amateur champion, who crashed the party and earned the final of seven spots available at the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Before he teed off in his morning round, McCulloch’s brother called to wish him luck and said he was going to mark the week of the Open as out of office so he could caddie for him.

McCulloch shot a 36-hole total of 8-under 134 to qualify for his first major championship. Last week, he played in the Canadian Open, too, and missed the cut, ranking dead last in Strokes Gained: Putting for the first two days. But it was an experienced he said he’ll never forget.

“I figured out it is my passion to play on the PGA Tour so I’m just excited to get back out there and play against the best again,” he said.

Cherry Hill Club, a Walter Travis course that is more than 100 years old, surrendered four 63’s on Monday, which tied the course record. Mark Hubbard just missed a 12-foot birdie putt at the last for 62.

But that was nearly the only putt that didn’t drop with a TaylorMade Spider putter he inserted in the bag just last month.

“It’s the last putter I ever thought I’d use,” he said. “But that’s the best I’ve putted in as long as I can remember. “I feel like I rolled it really well last week and I couldn’t read the greens at all. I got out here and this is an old-school course with lots of slope and I was so happy to be on a green where I could be confident it was going left.”

Hubbard is having a solid season on the Tour and hasn’t missed a cut this season.

“I was joking that if I qualify today does that count as another made cut?” said Hubbard, who qualified for the Open for the first time. (He got into Winged Foot during the COVID year.) “And if I don’t does that count as my first missed cut?”

He shot 64-63 to take medalist honors, three shots better than Canadian Adam Svensson.

Rico Hoey was alone in third after rounds of 68-63. Hoey has struggled as a PGA Tour rookie this season and missed his fourth consecutive cut last week at the RBC, where he battled a cold in addition to his game. He spent Saturday in bed and considered skipping the qualifier.

“Golf can be so dark. I was like I don’t know if I should or not, it’s going to be a joke, an embarrassment,” Hoey said. “I decided I owe it to myself to come out and play and I’m glad I did. These are the times that I’ll look back and say, you did it and you can keep rolling through those bad times.”

Hoey heated up on the front nine of his second round, playing the first six holes in six under and going out in 29.

“I made six threes in a row and said, 'God, this might happen,'” said Hoey, who was a hard-luck loser last year at qualifying for the Open in L.A., not far from where he grew up.

He qualified for his first major and will compete at Pinehurst, where his former college coach, Chris Zambri, lives and works for the USGA.

Davis Thompson is heading to Pinehurst too. He shot the first 63 in the morning round at Cherry Hill and finished at 10 under. Greyson Sigg shot 64-69 to tie for fifth with Aaron Rai. The Englishman used a local member as a caddie, who guided him around to a 70 in the morning and then he got his bearings. He holed out a 9-iron from 138 yards at the fourth hole and finished with three birdies in his final four holes to tie the course record and seal the deal.

Rai played in the U.S. Open once before at Erin Hills in 2017. He’s been to Pinehurst once, competing in the U.S. Kids Worlds Championships at age 12.

“I have very fond memories of that,” he said. “That will be special to go back to a place where I played junior golf but this time going back for a major.”

Keith Mitchell missed a 10-foot birdie putt at 18 that would’ve forced a playoff with McCulloch, but he returned to 18 and made a 6-foot birdie to secure first-alternate status. Matt Wallace is the second alternate.

Sixty-seven players registered for the Cherry Hill site for the seven spots available.

Northern Bear Golf Club to host 2024 ATB Classic

Second stop on PGA TOUR Americas to take place June 24-30 in Strathcona County, AB

PGA TOUR Americas, Linx Marketing and ATB Financial confirmed today that the ATB Classic will be played at Northern Bear Golf Club as scheduled, June 24-30, while the club continues to rebuild after a fire destroyed the clubhouse on January 13.

“The incredible strength of the club and the community is what makes it possible for the ATB Classic to be played at Northern Bear this summer,” said Scott Pritchard, Vice President of PGA TOUR Americas. “Our players love Northern Bear and we’re looking forward to supporting the club as the healing and rebuilding process continues.”

“ATB Financial has proudly supported professional golf in Alberta for more than 25 years, and is excited for this highly competitive and rewarding event to return to the Northern Bear Golf Club,” said Curtis Stange, CEO of ATB Financial. “We are confident that the business community will rally around this tournament and that hundreds of volunteers, caddies and billets will help make it possible!”

“Northern Bear is excited to host the ATB Classic once again and we look forward to having the players and everyone involved back here in June” says Blair McDowell, Director of Golf.

“Hosting an International Professional Golf Tournament without a clubhouse will have its challenges”, said ATB Classic Tournament Director Darcy Enick.  “We are working closely with the Northern Bear staff and local sponsors and suppliers to ensure the ATB Classic will continue to be one of the top ranked events on PGA TOUR Americas”.

The Jack Nicklaus design proved to be a formidable test for PGA TOUR Americas players in 2023.   Notre Dame Graduate Davis Lamb won the tournament at -18 and went on to win the Quebec Open, and finished 3 rd on the 2023 Fortinet Cup Standings.

Lamb silences field with 3-stroke victory at ATB Classic

pga tour canada monday qualifying

SHERWOOD PARK, Alberta—Davis Lamb had to Monday qualify just to get into the field for this week’s ATB Classic. He had no idea that he was about to make history.

Lamb, of Bethesda, Maryland, shot a 2-under 70 Sunday to finish at 18-under 270 at Northern Bear Golf Course and become the first Monday qualifier to win on PGA TOUR Canada.  After his first PGA TOUR-sanctioned win, Lamb is now exempt for the remainder of the season.

“It’s kind of surreal to be standing here right now,” Lamb said. “My game was in a good spot. I was ready to come up here and compete. But to start Monday morning, teeing off with kind of a play-well-or-go-home scenario, and to make it all the way to Sunday and be standing here … It’s pretty surreal.”

The Notre Dame graduate overcame two double bogeys on the front nine during a cool, windy day to beat Eric McCardle of Oak Harbor, Washington—another Monday qualifier—by two shots and Nicolo Galletti of Berkeley, California, by three.

“Today is about the hardest I’ve ever had to work on the golf course, so for it to pay off the way it did, it feels amazing,” Lamb said.

Lamb also moved into a tie for second place on the Fortinet Cup points list, 42 points behind leader Étienne Papineau.

Lamb shared the 54-hole lead with Eric Lilleboe after players completed the delayed third round Sunday morning. Dangerous weather conditions forced suspension of play Saturday and the fourth round’s weather didn’t really improve.

Lamb stumbled with his first double bogey of the day, on the par-5 sixth hole, and took another double on the par-4 ninth hole. But he somehow regained his momentum with an eagle at No. 10, a 540-yard par-5, and added three more birdies, the last coming on the par-3 17th that gave him a three-shot lead entering the 72nd hole.

“I doubled my sixth hole, hitting the ball in the trees, which you just can’t do out here, and then doubled No. 9 again,” Lamb said. “At that point I’m just hanging on for dear life. Luckily, I hit a good drive on 10, and I just told my caddie, ‘It’s time to hit a golf shot right now.’ And we did from 235 (yards) to about three feet, made eagle and from there we just played great coming in.”

Lamb said it was “easily the best golf shot I’ve hit in my entire life and to do it in that situation was amazing.”

The long birdie putt on the 17th hole certainly made it an easier finish for Lamb, who punctuated his win with an emphatic fist pump when the final putt dropped.

“It’s never done. I was still working hard,” Lamb said. “But to take a three-shot lead going into 18 was, in my mind, a can’t-lose scenario. I knew I was driving. I knew I could hit the green. So, to give myself a chance to win with a five-putt, it’s comfortable for me.”

McCardle had three birdies on the back nine but never got closer than a stroke. He shot 69 and finished at 15-under 273. Galletti also found himself in contention late in the round, recording his fifth birdie on No. 15, but a bogey on the 17th hole would see him finish with a 4-under 68 and in third.

Sudarshan Yellamaraju was the low Canadian. He shot 66, the best round of the day, and finished fourth, at 13-under 275. He moved up 26 spots on the leaderboard the final day.

“I’m happy with the way I played today, especially under these conditions. I wouldn’t say anything clicked. I just feel like I did my job,” Yellamaraju said.

There was a four-way tie for fifth place, at 12-under 276—Canadian Noah Steele, Sam Choi of Malibu, California, Chase Sienkiewicz of Sacramento, California, and Australian Jack Trent.

PGA Tour, players hold celebration of life for Grayson Murray

Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati reflect on the death of Grayson Murray, age 30. (2:24)

DUBLIN, Ohio -- Dozens of players gathered Tuesday for a solemn celebration of life for Grayson Murray , the PGA Tour winner who took his own life a day after withdrawing from a tournament.

"All of us at the PGA Tour carry a heavy heart and will for a long time to come," PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said, his voice cracking at times. "When you lose a family member, you can never quite put all the pieces back together."

Murray's parents, two siblings and fiancée were not at Memorial Park, a garden that sits below the first tee at Muirfield Village, its rock walls filled with bronze plaques of players who have been honored at the Memorial over the years.

Next to the podium was Murray's golf bag, along with a large framed photograph of his reaction to making a 40-foot birdie in a playoff to win the Sony Open in January.

His parents said he died by suicide on May 25, one day after he walked off the course at Colonial with two holes remaining in the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge. He was 30.

Among those who spoke at the celebration was Masters champion Scottie Scheffler , who came to know Murray better in the early part of the year, as Murray was trying to get his fiancée more involved with some of the players' wives.

They played a nine-hole practice round at The Players Championship, Murray and Chesson Hadley against Scheffler and Sam Burns .

"The look on his face when I gave him $100 on the ninth green is something I'll remember for a long time because you couldn't wipe that smile off his face," Scheffler said. "Without a doubt, he loved being out here inside the ropes."

Scheffler referred to him as a "sweet man" on more than one occasion, and he was weeping when he walked away from the podium, then buried his head in his wife's shoulder.

Murray's death was a shock to players, caddies and everyone involved in the tour. He was a prodigious talent as a junior, winning the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky as a rookie. He also had talked publicly about his struggles with alcoholism and anxiety. Murray spoke at the Sony Open about feeling like a failure for not living up to expectations.

Webb Simpson , who first met an 8-year-old Murray in their home state of North Carolina, is not at the Memorial this year. He had another close friend, Russell Henley , read his thoughts.

Jay Green, who began caddying for him the week of the Sony Open, told of his hopes to buy a Rolex watch if they had a good year. Murray won the Sony Open and bought a Rolex.

For Monahan, Murray's death was personal.

This week marks one year since the PGA Tour made a secretive deal with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, and Murray was front and center at a player meeting the afternoon of June 6 to hammer Monahan for doing the deal and not telling anyone.

Monahan a week later stepped away for more than a month with anxiety-induced physical and mental issues. During that time away, Monahan turned off his cellphone for a month.

"We had a player meeting in Canada that all of you know was intense and heated. Grayson and others were extremely vocal about their displeasure about my decision to keep the membership in the heart. The criticism, it was 100 percent warranted," Monahan said.

He said when he finally turned his phone back on during his leave, one of the first text messages he saw was from Murray.

"A line in that text will always stay with me -- 'Jay I just want you to get healthy. I know everything is doing to work out for our tour and for the better,'" Monahan said. "He offered not condemnation but compassion. Instead of walking away from me, he offered to walk with me.

"I'll always be thankful for this act of kindness, and I'm not alone."

Monahan said similar stories were shared in a private service for Murray and his family Monday.

Players, along with Memorial founder Jack Nicklaus and wife, Barbara, filled the seats. Tour officials stood flanked to the left, with dozens of other players, caddies, equipment representatives and agents filling the ground to the right. More than a hundred spectators watched from a hill above the garden as a bagpipe played "Amazing Grace" at the end.

"I can only offer the assurance that Grayson's memory will serve as a continual reminder that the PGA Tour is a brotherhood that transcends competition," Monahan said. "And our foremost responsibility is to care for each other and be kind. I can't imagine a prouder legacy."

This former BYU golfer just qualified to play in the U.S. Open next week at famed Pinehurst

Pga tour regular zac blair of ogden earned medalist honors at a qualifying site in springfield, ohio, but several other utahns fell short on monday.

By Jay Drew

Former BYU golf standout Zac Blair is headed back to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club’s revered No. 2 course next week.

Ten years after qualifying for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in 2014, Blair did it again Monday in Springfield, Ohio. The former Fremont High star and Ogden native earned medalist honors at Springfield Country Club by firing rounds of 66 and 65 to finish at 9-under 131.

None of the other golfers with Utah ties — at least 11 — who had survived the first round of sectional qualifying were able to advance on Monday, aka “golf’s longest day,” meaning that the only Utahns in the field for the 124th U.S. Open next week will be Blair and former Salt Lake City resident Tony Finau, a longtime PGA Tour star.

The tournament runs from June 13-16; Martin Kaymer won in 2014 when the U.S. Open was at Pinehurst, while Blair finished in a tie for 40th place.

“Yeah, Pinehurst is one of best courses in the world, a major, the U.S. Open, pretty awesome,” Blair told the Golf Channel.

Blair was coming off his best individual finish in the 2024 season, a T24 at the RBC Canadian Open in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on Sunday. He shot a 68 in Sunday’s final round, then boarded a flight to Ohio for Monday’s 36-hole qualifier.

“I hit a bunch of really good shots,” he said Monday night. “Hit good iron shots on my back nine, made some putts. They started to go in. Just did everything really solidly.”

Blair said he’s played in sectional qualifying at the Springfield “probably six times” and the familiarity with the course “helped” him earn medalist honors, a shot better than Beau Hossler.

“There are a couple spots out there where you gotta know where to miss it and take your medicine at certain times,” he said. “I just really like coming back here.”

Carson Schaake and Cameron Davis also qualified in Ohio; Davis downed Adam Scott on the third playoff hole to advance.

Two other former BYU golfers — Daniel Summerhays and Patrick Fishburn — also attempted to qualify Monday but were denied. Summerhays shot a 74 in his first round at Duke University Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, and did not complete his second round.

Fishburn shot a 6-under 136 (71-65) at Ohio State Golf Club (Scarlet Course) in Columbus, Ohio, but missed qualifying by three shots.

Across the country at the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, California, BYU golfers Cooper Jones, Tyson Shelley and Angus Klintworth failed to qualify, as did Utah State golfer Ashton McArthur.

Former Utah golfers Blake Tomlinson and Mitchell Schow also came up short in California, with Tomlinson shooting an 8-under (68-68) and missing by just two shots.

Former two-time Utah State Amateur champ Preston Summerhays, now an Arizona State golfer, shot a 2-under at Lake Merced and didn’t qualify.

Lone Peak High rising senior Kihei Akina struggled in difficult conditions at Pronghorn Resort (Nicklaus Course) in Bend, Oregon, and fell short of advancing.

Former Weber High star Connor Howe shot an 11-under (71-62) at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Georgia, and missed qualifying by one shot. He is now on the alternates list.
