Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port

Cruise ships dock at Estacion Maritima , which consists of two main cruise terminals: Muelle de Poniente and Dique del Oeste.

Muelle de Poniente is a modern cruise and ferry terminal where the majority of cruise liners dock. It has 4 terminal buildings (Estacion Maritima 1,2,3 and 4) equipped with modern facilities such as ATMs, banks, restrooms, and a luggage check-in area. Taxis and buses are available outside on the pier.

Palma city center is located 4.5 km/2.8 miles (a 15-minute drive) from the port of Palma. You can also walk to the center which takes approximately 45 minutes.

The port area is huge and scenic, and the walk is quite enjoyable as you walk along the waterfront marina filled with boats and luxurious yachts.

However, make sure you have comfortable shoes and a hat, and keep hydrated, as there is limited shade on the way downtown.

The ferry terminal is also here, and the ferries to the mainland and the other Balearic Islands run frequently.

Dique del Oeste is an alternative cruise terminal used by large cruise ships and on occasions when Muelle de Poniente is busy.

It is located by the industrial zone, near Castell de Sant Carles – a castle transformed into a military museum, and a centuries-old Porto Pi lighthouse. This terminal is situated approximately 8 km/5 mi from the city center and consists of 4 berths.

The terminal building is equipped with some basic facilities including restrooms, ATMs and a cafeteria, and the whole area offers wonderful views of the city.

Shuttle buses and taxis are available on the vast pier outside, and the ride to the city center takes approximately 20 minutes. It takes around a 1h 10-minute to reach downtown on foot. Porto Pi shopping mall is located nearby, and you can get there in 20 minutes by walk.

Palma de Mallorca cruise port

There are several ways to reach Palma city center no matter where your cruise ship is docked.

  • By shuttle bus – Cruise lines normally provide shuttle buses and charge a fee for round-trip transfers. They pick you up at the terminal and drop you off a 5-minute walk from Palma Cathedral, one of the main historic landmarks. The ride takes around 10-15 minutes one-way, depending on where your ship is docked.  Shuttle buses run frequently, especially in the morning when many cruise passengers go out in port.
  • By taxi – A line of taxis is available on the pier, right outside of the ship. The taxis are metered and quite expensive, however, it’s a cheaper option than the shuttle bus as the price is charged per vehicle. The taxi ride lasts 10-15 minutes.
  • By public bus – The local bus is the cheapest and most affordable means of transport to get around Palma. The bus N°1 connects the cruise terminals to the main Palma highlights and the city’s surroundings, and the bus stop is located right outside the terminal area. The bus company is EMT, and buses run approximately every 15 minutes. If your ship is docked at Muelle de Poniente, you’ll find the bus stop by the cruise terminal exit, and if you are docked at Dique del Oeste, the bus stop is located opposite the Castle of San Carlos. Find more information on the EMT company website
  • By Hop on Hop off bus – If you opt for a Palma sightseeing tour, the best way to do that is by hopping on one of the Hop on Hop off buses that you’ll find near the cruise terminal. Each ticket is valid for 24 hours, and you can hop on and off as much as you want at the main sights of Palma: Cathedral of Palma, Pueblo Español, Bellver Castle, La Rambla, Fundació Pilar I Joan Miró, Royal Palace of La Almudaina, and others. Getting Around Palma de Mallorca

  • The currency in Spain is EURO (€). Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are available in the cruise terminals and the city center.
  • Palma Intermodal Station (Estació Intermodal) is Palma’s main bus and train terminal. It is located in Plaça d’Espanya, approximately 1.5 km/1 mile (a 20-minute drive) northeast of Palma Cathedral and the city center. You can check the timetables and fares at the official TIB website (Transports de les Illes Balears) https://www.tib.org/

4. Castell de Bellver

The imposing Bellver Castle is a must-see attraction in Palma. It is located on the hill overlooking the city, around a 10-minute drive (5.5 km/3.5 miles) from the Palma cruise port.

Castell de Bellver is a 14th-century castle of massive dimensions, set in dense pine woods on the hilltop offering fabulous views of the Palma harbor and the city (Bellver means “lovely view” in Catalan).

Throughout history, the castle served as a Royal residence of the Kings of Mallorca, a military prison, and today it houses Palma’s Museum of History.

Bellver Castle - Palma de Mallorca

The castle is perfectly preserved and entirely circular, which makes it unique in Spain and one of few circular castles in Europe. A visit is worthy and interesting for both kids and adults. At the castle, there is also a café where you can buy refreshments.

There are a few ways to get to Bellver castle: by booking a shore excursion , by a taxi (a 10-minute ride), renting a car (there is parking outside the castle), and Hop on hop off bus.

You can also take a local bus at the 81-Joan Miro – Corb Mari bus stop located less than a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. Get off at Plaça Gomila, and then climb up through the pine woods above Carrer de Bellver, passing by Capela de Sant Alonso Rodriguez on your way. You need to be able to walk uphill for approximately 15 minutes.

If you walk straight from the Palma Old Town, you’ll need about 40 minutes to climb up to the castle.

5. Passeig del Born

Located a stone’s throw from La Almudaina palace, Passeig del Born is a notable, tree-lined street filled with shops, cafes, pubs, and bars.

It is known as a shopping paradise, where you can find a wide variety of designer stores, such as Zara, Stradivarius, Massimo Dutti, Max Mara, Louis Vuitton, perfume stores, and much more!

It is a very nice place where you can walk under the shade of the trees, or relax in one of the street cafes while enjoying tapas or a glass of sangria.

6. Cala Major Beach

Playa de Cala Major is a wonderful sandy beach located approximately a 5-10 minute drive from the Palma cruise terminal. It is small, clean and can get very busy.

The beach is surrounded by luxurious hotels, and you can find several restaurants and bars in the area. You can rent chairs and umbrellas, and there is no admission fee to enter the beach.

Cala Major Beach is one of the best beaches in Palma de Mallorca and one of the nearest to the cruise port. You can also get there by local bus.

Cala Major - One of the most beautiful Palma de Mallorca beaches

7. Platja Ca’n Pere Antoni

Located 2 km from the city center (a 20-minute walk from Palma Cathedral), Platja Ca’n Pere Antoni is a 750-meter-long public beach offering facilities such as toilets, showers, and several bars and restaurants on its east end.

The beach can easily be spotted from the ship and overlooks the Bay of Palma. It is a man-made beach boasting white, soft sand and refreshing water, ideal for families with kids, couples, and people of all ages.

The beach is backed by a beautiful, long waterfront promenade and if you take a walk, you’ll reach the Palma Cathedral and the old town in less than 20 minutes.

To get to Platja Ca’n Pere Antoni from the cruise port, you can take a bus or taxi to the city center and walk to the beach, or you can catch a taxi directly to the beach. It is a great place to hang out and enjoy the views of the harbor.

Magaluf is located approximately 13 km/8 miles (a 15-minute drive) southwest of the port of Palma de Mallorca. It is a popular resort town known for its lively nightlife and golden, sandy beaches.

The best beaches in Magaluf are Magaluf Beach (Playa de Magaluf), Son Matias Beach , and Palmanova Beach .

Magaluf

Platja de Magaluf is a long stretch of white sands with an attractive seafront promenade lined with luxurious hotel resorts, beach clubs, bars and restaurants, and a great variety of activities to offer.

In the vicinity, you can enjoy a wide range of attractions such as theme parks (Western Water Park, Katmandu Park), leisure activities, watersports (jet-skiing, banana boat rides, snorkeling, kite surfing, scuba diving…) and much more!

Another famous beach is Son Matias Beach , located within a 10-minute walk from Playa de Magaluf. It is 1.2 km long and very wide, sandy with crystal clear, turquoise waters.

Playa de Palmanova is nestled right next to it and belongs to the nearby resort of Palma Nova which you can access by walk.

Overall, these beaches are breathtaking and if you are looking for a fun-filled day, Spanish vibes, and a warm Mediterranean sun, Magaluf is the place to go!

To get to Magaluf, I suggest you take a taxi because the local bus might take up a lot of time. An alternative option is to book a private transfer or a shore excursion to Magaluf. Make sure to bring cash (euros) to Palma Nova and Magaluf, as in some places foreign currency and credit cards are not accepted.

9. Caves of Drach

Drach Caves (Cuevas del Drach) are one of the most impressive caves I’ve ever been to in my whole life! It’s a spectacular place that I highly recommend you visit either on a cruise ship excursion or on your own.

Drach caves are located on the east coast of Palma de Mallorca, in the town of Porto Cristo , 70 km/45 miles (a 1-hour drive) from the port of Palma.

The fascinating cave system is one of the most visited attractions on the island due to one of the largest underwater lakes in the world – Lake Martel. A part of the 4 km long cave system that you will explore is around 1.200 m (3.940 ft) long and reaches a depth of 25 m (82 ft) below ground level.

During your walk through the caves, take in the views of the surreal turquoise water of numerous small lakes and jaw-dropping geological formations, and enjoy a boat ride on Lake Martel.

Caves of Drach - Palma de Mallorca

The highlight of Drach Caves’ visit is the live concert by the Lake Martel. Once you take your seat in a large hall by the lake, the lights turn off and the magic begins!

While you listen to the performers playing enchanting music on the boats floating across the lake, you’ll feel goosebumps all over your body!

You can’t take photos or video during the concert, which approximately lasts 20 minutes. When it finishes, you’ll be allowed to walk to the exit of the cave or take a boat ride back.

A boat ride lasts only 5 minutes and the lake is not that huge, so in case it’s crowded, skip the lines for the boat and walk to the exit.

Lake Martel - Caves of Drach

The Caves of Drack are not wheelchair accessible and not recommended for people with walking difficulties. The place is usually packed with tourists, but don’t be discouraged – it’s worth a visit!

Near the entrance to the cave, there is a large bar-restaurant where you can buy food and snacks, public restrooms, gift shops, and a ticket office.

In case you decide to come on your own, you can rent a car, book a private transfer, or take a taxi. Alternatively, there are many Drach Caves tours offered by cruise lines and independent tour operators, which I recommend you book for two reasons:

  • The distance between Palma and Caves of Drach is long and the ship is in port for a half-day, so make sure you take an organized tour that guarantees to bring you back to the cruise ship on time.
  • Flexible cancelation options.

10. Flamenco Show at Son Amar

It is believed that the flamenco show at Son Amar Performing Arts Theater is one of the best in the world!

This is where the Spanish tradition comes to life and where the fantastic performance of professional flamenco artists sets your soul on fire! The performers are passionate, attractive, beautiful, and highly professional, which makes the whole show unique and unforgettable!

During the show, the tapas and sangria are served to complete your experience to the fullest! I went to the show and it was brilliant! I highly suggest you go for it as it’s by far the best “passion show” you’ll ever see!

Flamenco at Son Amar - Palma de Mallorca

Son Amar estate is set in a wonderful Mallorca countryside, approximately a 20-minute drive (18 km/11 miles) from Palma cruise port.

If you decide to go on your own, you need to book the tickets ahead but it’s not guaranteed they will have a show at that time.

The best option is to book a cruise ship shore excursion, so everything is organized for you and your return to the ship is guaranteed. For those of you who stay several days in Mallorca, you can book an evening flamenco show with dinner included .

11. Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Mallorca

Pilar and Joan Miro Foundation in Mallorca is a must-see place for art lovers. The museum is dedicated to the Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist Joan Miro who lived and created in Palma de Mallorca for over 30 years.

The museum contains outstanding collections donated by Miró, including the artist’s studios – the Sert Studio and Son Boter, together with artworks, documents, and objects found inside.

Over 7000 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, graphic work, and a part of his library can be explored in the museum.

A beautiful sculpture garden and a lovely café are part of the museum, so you can walk around and relax while taking in the views of the harbor.

The museum is located a bit further from the Palma city center (around 15 minutes drive), but quite close to the cruise terminal – only a 5-minute ride, or a 25-minute walk.

You can go there by taxi, Hop on Hop off bus, EMT buses 46, 3, and 20 (a bus stop is near the cruise terminal), and TIB bus 104.

12. Palma Aquarium

If you are coming to Palma de Mallorca with kids and want to spend a memorable, fun-filled day, head over to Palma Aquarium, a beautiful marine park featuring over 700 species from the Mediterranean Sea, Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans.

More than 25 aquariums filled with incredible sea animals, a shark boat, a 3D whale experience, open-air gardens, and a large outdoor playground for kids await you on this unique Mallorca adventure!

The whole area is wheelchair accessible. Palma Aquarium is located a 15-minute drive from the Palma cruise terminal, near the Palma de Mallorca airport. You can reach it by taxi, or local bus (N° 23, 35, TIB 520).

13. Mercado de l’Olivar

If you seek an authentic gastronomic experience, Palma de Mallorca has several markets where you can delight in fresh Spanish homemade products such as cheese, seafood, pastries, fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, and more. Housed in a large historic building, Mercat de l’Olivar is one of the most famous indoor markets in Palma.

Besides the fresh products, there are small eateries where you can taste delicious tapas with wine and beer. This is a must-see place if you want to feel like a local and indulge in local specialties.

Another popular market is Mercat de Santa Catalina , located close to the marina. Mercat de l’Olivar and Mercat de Santa Catalina are both located within a 10-15 minute walk from the Palma Cathedral.

Explore the Palma food-tasting tours and activities

14. Pueblo Espanol

Poble Espanyol de Mallorca is located a 40-minute walk from the cruise port or less than a 10-minute drive. It is a popular museum and event space housed in a replica of a Spanish village featuring Spanish attractions, buildings, and historic landmarks.

If you are a history lover and want to learn about Spanish culture and customs, you should visit this authentic complex that will throw you back to different eras in the history of Spain.

You’ll discover the rich architectural heritage of different parts of Spain and enjoy the open-air cultural performances, craft workshops, art exhibitions, and much more. The place is family-friendly and attracts people of all ages.

15. Valldemossa

Set in a lush valley and surrounded by dense forests of the Tramuntana mountains, Valldemossa is an idyllic village situated a 25-minute drive north of the Palma de Mallorca cruise dock.

The picturesque, quiet streets, shops, restaurants, art galleries, and numerous walking/hiking trails attract visitors who want to indulge in Spanish culture and intact nature.

Valdemossa - Palma de Mallorca

Valldemossa is famous for Real Cartuja de Valldemossa , the 13th-century Carthusian monastery that was originally founded as a Royal residence of King Sancho of Majorca.

Throughout centuries many writers and artists have found inspiration in charming Valldemossa, and the most famous one is the composer Frederic Chopin who spent one winter in the monastery with the French writer George Sand.

The monastery is a museum open to the public, and you can visit Chopin’s room, an old pharmacy, a library, an art gallery, and other rooms. The Palau del Rei Sanç (Palace of King Sancho) and Jardins Rei Joan Carles gardens are two other beautiful attractions located next to the monastery. It is best to visit Valldemossa on a guided tour or by taxi.

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, palma de majorca spain cruise port guide.

In Palma, most cruise ships are berthed in either of two locations :

The Estació Maritima ferry and cruise pier, which is next to the yacht basins and about a 40-minute walk from the city center. Most ships dock at this modern terminal.

Only some ships dock near the commercial and naval port near the fortress at Porto Pí, which is on the western edge of Palma. The cruise pier is a 75- to 90-minute walk from the main tourist sights, but you'll find a large shopping mall near the port entrance.

For the energetic passenger it is possible to walk (6 kilometers) from the cruise terminal to the old city of Palma along the curving sea front, where you will pass the yacht moorings in the inner bay with the commercial moorings beyond. As you make your way along the sea front you will eventually come to the old city and tourist area on your left with its restaurants, museums, places of interest, hotels, bars and shops.

For those of us less energetic mortals a local taxi will transport you to the Cathedral , a good place to start and finish your tour. The taxis are all metered and fairly expensive but plentiful. The cost for a trip into town is about 10 euros.

There is also a regular bus service into town. (Every 15 minutes bus nr.1. ) 3 Euro to town, 5 Euro to the airport. Get off at Argentina stop then walk towards the cathedral.

The Hop on/off bus (see below) has a stop right in front of the cruise terminal.

Also, most cruise lines offer a shuttle from the port to a central point in town near the Cathedral. (12 Euro). So bus #1 is a much better deal.

Passengers arriving at Palma from a Mediterranean cruise may check in their luggage at the port of Palma. This means that prior to travelling to the airport for their flight, they can enjoy the city of Palma unburdened by suitcases and already in possession of their boarding passes. Bus 1 takes you direct to and from the airport.

The City Council is proposing limits on cruises and extra port fees in the near future.

The Port of Alcudia is situated in the north of the island of Majorca, in a lovely bay. It is a small commercial port suitable only for dropping anchor in order for passengers to go on excursions around the beautiful north coast.

Sightseeing:

The city is dominated by its wonderful Gothic cathedral, La Seu , and most of the main sights are located within the area bounded by the old city walls, especially to the north and east of the cathedral. The cathedral admission($9) includes admission to the museum next to the cathedral, which has air conditioning.

Both the cathedral La Seu and the Palau de l'Almudaina (Royal Palace) are on the harbor and worth a visit, as are the nearby ancient Moorish baths (Banys Arabs). As you stroll away from the palace area back towards Plaça d'Espanya, you might want to take the Passeig des Born, a tree-lined boulevard that many see as the heart of city life.

Another must-see site on this walking tour is the old Gran Hotel, Palma's first luxury hotel, now a museum of modern art called the Fundació la Caixa. Its trendy cafe-bar is a good choice for lunch or a snack. Turn right off the Passeig des Born onto Carrer Unió. The Fundació la Caixa is on Carrer Unió near the Teatre Principal and the Plaça Weyler.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

If many ships are in port, waiting lines can be long for tours.

The easiest way to "see Palma in a day" is Palma de Mallorca City Hop-on Hop-off Tour , which also takes you to Castell de Bellver , which offers stunning views of the city, from a castle like setting.

It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .

Nearby Places:

The monumental compounds of Valldemossa rise between Sierra de Tramuntana and the Mediterranenan, a few kilometers away from the Majorcan Costa Nord. The city's careful layout is filled with steep streets, stone façades and important religious buildings, among a luxuriant vegetation. The mountains of this area dive into the ocean, to form beaches and coves where it is possible to anchor any vessel. The port of Valldemossa preserves the fishing-town character of yore. Fresh fish and inland produce are wisely combined into succulent recipes that will delight visitors.

Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838-9 here in the old monastery. In spite of the beautiful view and general comfort of what is described as a cell, they were not happy and George Sand wrote a book which may well not have led the locals to want them back.

Soller is located on the north coast of Mallorca. You can get there with the train from Palma de Mallorca-Plz Espana. It is a nice cool place to visit in summer month. From Soller there is the famous tram to Puerto de Soller .

Drach Caves . Located on the east coast of Mallorca, more specifically in the town of Porto Cristo, these stunning caves are undoubtedly one of the island´s top tourist attractions, extending for almost 1,200 metres in lengthand reaching a maximum depth of 25 metres below ground level. The caves conceal a large underground lake, Lake Martel, regarded as one of the biggest underground lakes in the world.

Shopping and Food

Shopping: In the atmospheric and often pedestrian streets of the old city. There is a small but very competitive priced duty-free store in the terminal.

As in other parts of southern Europe, the siesta is alive and well in Palma. Many shops, churches and museums close in mid-afternoon for several hours. Larger store however stay open.

Currency Converter

Communication:

An Internet cafe is located in Porto Pi center. It is open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily. Plenty of Cappuccino cafes and other fast food outlets offer free WiFi in town.

Emergency number: Dial 112 free of charge (valid throughout Spain). Service is given in Spanish, and also in English, French and German in some tourist areas.

Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port Guide: Old Town & Beaches

Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port , or also known as Palma, is the gateway to the capital and largest city in the Balearic Islands in Spain. Palma boasts a rich history dating back to Roman times. So in this guide, I’ll show you how to navigate out of Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port to its Old Town, so you can marvel at the stunning Gothic cathedral La Seu, overlooking the Bay of Palma. And of course, no port day is complete in the Baleraric Islands without some time at the beach! So I’ll give you a list of options which are close by Palma Cruise Port too. Let’s get this DIY adventure started!

Note: I use Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port throughout this guide, so as not to get Palma confused with Las Palmas, the cruise port in the Canary Islands . The two ports get so easily confused that some cruise lines have even changed Las Palmas to just Gran Canaria (the island) on their itineraries, so cruisers don’t think they’re heading to Palma de Mallorca! So while Palma de Mallorca sure is quite a mouthful, I use its full name here for a reason!

Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port: Is a DIY Excursion Easy? 😎😎😎😎 Smooth Sailing

Navigating Palma de Mallorca on your own is straightforward and I gave it 😎😎😎😎 out of 5. Here’s why:

  • Direct Bus to the Heart of the Action:  A convenient bus line (Route 1) runs from just outside the cruise port gates directly to the city centre (Old Town) in 15-20 minutes.
  • Excellent Bus Network:  Palma’s extensive bus network makes it easy to reach other attractions beyond the city centre. Hop on a bus to explore the beaches of Playa de Palma or Cala Major , or venture up to the hilltop Castell de Bellver before returning to the cruise port.
  • Walkable Old Town:  Palma’s compact city centre is incredibly walkable, allowing you to easily meander through the charming streets of the old town and discover its hidden gems.
  • Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port Address: Av. de Gabriel Roca, Ponent, 07015 Palma, Illes Balears, Spain – see this marked in my map below 👇
  • Currency: Euros
  • Language: Spanish
  • Official Websites: EMT Palma has bus routes & timetables – see below for the best bus routes from cruise port to city centre & other attractions.
  • Recommended Transport App: EMT Palma does offer its own app but Google Maps worked just fine with bus routes & live bus times.
  • eSIM for roaming in Spain : For a great data connection without the huge roaming fees, use an eSim data pack from Airalo. I always recommend having a smartphone with a valid plan when you’re at port touring independently. Get US$3 off your first eSIM data pack from Airalo when you use ROXANN1666  when you sign up or apply it at checkout
  • On Desktop | Laptop?  Use buttons on bottom left to zoom in/out. Click on the upper right hand corner to see a bigger version.
  • On Tablet | Mobile?  Pinch your screen to zoom in/out and use two fingers to move map around.  If you have Google Maps installed on your tablet/mobile, my map will open in your Google Maps app if you click on the upper right hand corner.
  • If map is not loading correctly, click here to see it directly on Google Maps

Heading to Palma City Centre (Old Town) is super easy on the public bus, thanks to the convenient stop right outside the port gates! Also, bus route #1 mainly caters to cruise port passengers and runs on a continuous loop between the port and the city centre.

  • Cruise Port Bus Stop: The stop is a few steps outside the port gate. You’ll see a bus shelter immediately outside the port gates – I’ve marked it on my map above!
  • Tickets: Purchase €3 tickets on bus with cash. Note Bus #1 is considered a special bus. Fares are more expensive than other local buses. Also no free transfers are permitted. But there is a free bus route around the city centre that you can use – read on!
  • Frequency: Every 20 minutes during weekdays and every 25 minutes on weekend. Visit EMT Palma for timetables
  • Journey Time: About 20 minutes depending on traffic
  • Stops for Old Town: I found the easiest stop for Old Town is Av. de Jaume III – it’s the main Street that will lead you to Passeig del Born , the “Golden Mile” promenade street which takes you down to the Cathedral and the Palace. If you want to head to Plaza Mayor first, then stay on the bus, until the last stop called “ Sindicat ” – see all these stops marked on my Palma cruise port map above 👆

Insider Tip : Free bus route named “ CC” (stands for Circular Centre Ciutat) is useful, given there’s no free bus transfers. Av. de Jaume III stop from Bus #1 is on this route. It loops around the Old Town . If you find yourself needing to go from one end of the Old Town to another, find a bus stop and hop onto this bus free .

Heading back to the cruise port from Old Town? You can use Bus #1 to get back or take #20 from Old Town to see Castell de Bellver before heading back to the ship.

Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port: Top Things to See & Do

Low angle shot of the facade of Palma Cathedral near Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port

This majestic Gothic cathedral at the edge of Old Town is hard to miss due to its towering spires. Constructed in the 13th century on the site of a former mosque, its grandeur was meant to reflect Mallorca’s wealth and power at the time.

Antoni Gaudí, the famed Catalan architect behind Sagrada Familia in Barcelona , was commissioned to undertake a renovation of the Cathedral. Although his work was ultimately unfinished due to disagreements with the contractor, some of his distinctive contributions remain:

  • The Baldachin (Canopy):  Perhaps the most striking of Gaudí’s additions is the massive wrought-iron canopy that hangs above the main altar. This intricate, crown-of-thorns-inspired structure is a testament to Gaudí’s unique style, combining elements of Art Nouveau and Gothic architecture.
  • The Choir Stalls:  Gaudí relocated the choir stalls from the center of the nave to the presbytery, opening up the central space and improving visibility for worshippers. He also designed new, more functional choir stalls with a focus on ergonomics and acoustics.
  • Lighting and Stained Glass:  Gaudí sought to enhance the natural light within the cathedral by opening up previously blocked windows and designing new stained glass windows.

You can also climb to the cathedral’s rooftop terraces for panoramic views of Palma, though it’s pricey!

  • Opening Hours : From April to October, 10am to 5:15pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 2:15pm Saturday. Closed Sundays. From November to March, 10am to 3:15pm Monday to Saturday.
  • Tickets : €10 for Cathedral entry, €25 for Cathedral and Terraces. No kids under 9 on the terraces, even if accompanied by an adult. If you only want to visit the Cathedral, you can purchase Cathedral only skip-the-line tickets online to save time.

Royal Palace of La Almudaina next to Palma Cathedral, near Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port

Next to the Cathedral is this impressive fortress-like palace built between 1305 to 1314 for James II. Since then, the palace has served as a residence for Mallorca rulers and still serves as the official residence for the King and Queen of Spain when they are in Mallorca. Don’t miss the Arabic Baths and there’s courtyards and wonderful gardens to enjoy.

  • Opening Hours : 10am to 7pm Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Mondays.
  • Tickets: Free Entrance on Wednesday and Sunday from 3pm to 7pm, otherwise, €7 for adults, €4 for kids. Audio guides are €5 extra.

Casco Antiguo Old Town near Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port with distinctive architecture style of green shutters.

The Casco Antiguo, or Old Town, of Palma de Mallorca began with the Romans, who founded the city as “Palmaria Palmensis” in 123 BC. The Romans were followed by the Byzantines and then the Moors, who ruled Mallorca for several centuries. The Arab Baths, tucked away in a quiet corner of the Old Town, offer a tangible reminder of the Moorish era. King James I of Aragon conquered Mallorca in 1229, bring Christian rule to the island.

As you wander through Old Town, all these historic influences are very much evident. Here’s a few landmarks to see:

  • Plaza Mayor : This large, rectangular plaza is surrounded by colourful buildings with characteristic Majorcan architecture: ochre-coloured facades, green shutters and wrought-iron balconies. This is a convenient starting point for exploring Old Town.
  • Passeig del Born : This elegant tree-lined promenade is like a miniature version of the La Rambla in Barcelona . It’s the “Golden Mile” now filled with upscale shops but it was once a jousting ground for knights during medieval times! Come here to window shop or enjoy a leisurely stroll followed by coffee or snack at the numerous cafes and bars here.
  • Basílica de Sant Francesc : The Basilica has an imposing facade but it’s the 14th century cloister that’s designated as a National Monument. This is wonderful as a rest stop. Open 10am to 6pm. €6 entry fee.
  • Opening Hours: 10:30am to 1:30pm, then 4pm to 10pm from May to October. 10:30am to 1:30pm, 4pm to 6pm from November to April. Free to enter.
  • Opening Hours: Closed Mondays. 10:30am to 1:30pm, then 5:30pm to 9pm. Free to enter.
  • Interested to experience an Arab bath? Then try a traditional Hammam Bath session in the heart of Old Town in Palma

3. Fundación Juan March Palma

Just off Plaza Mayor is the city’s most highly rated art museum, the Palma branch of Museu Fundación Juan March. It’s housed in a beautifully restored 17th century mansion but on display are all 20th-century Spanish art. Expect to see a permanent collection filled with Spain’s most celebrated artists, including Picasso, Dalí, Miró, and Gris .

  • Opening Hours : 10:30am to 6:30pm Monday to Friday, 10:30am to 2pm Saturday. Closed Sundays. Free entrance.

Castell de Bellver is unique among Spanish castles because it’s circular! Aside from the panoramic views of Palma, there are courtyards to explore, towers to climb as well as a museum dedicated to Palma’s history. It’s easy to get there from the Old Town, so I suggest that you do the sightseeing in Old Town first. Then visit the Castell on the way back to Palma cruise port.

  • From Old Town: Take Bus#20 to Plaça Gomila and climb up through the pine woods above Carrer de Bellver. It’s a 15 minute walk to the top of the castle. The most convenient stop in Old Town is at the T-junction between Passeig del Born and Av. de Jaume III – I’ve marked this on my map 👆
  • From Palma Cruise Port: Take Bus #1 to “ Portopi ” stop and change to Bus #4 or #20 to Plaça Gomila
  • Opening Hours : From April to September – 8:30am to 1pm Monday, 8:30 to 8pm Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 8pm Sunday. From October to March, closed Mondays, 10am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 3pm Sunday. Double check opening hours here .
  • Tickets: €4 adults, €2 for seniors, free for kids under 14. Also free on Sundays!

Palma de Mallorca boasts a few beautiful beaches and they’re all easily accessible from the cruise port! Here’s the top beaches to consider for your DIY excursion:

  • How to Get There: Walk around 3 minutes out of the port gates to stop “ Joan Miró “, marked on my map. Catch bus #4 directly to Cala Major – this bus runs very frequently. Check live departure times with Google Maps. Takes about 15 minutes. Pay €2 ticket with cash onboard.
  • How to Get There: As above, walk to stop “ Joan Miró ” and catch bus #4 bus to “ Ses Illetes ” stop. From there, the beach is a few minutes walk away. Journey time is about 30 minutes. Pay €2 ticket with cash onboard.
  • Playa de Palma:  If you want a long sandy beach, then you have to venture a little further away from the cruise port, to Palma’s namesake beach, Playa de Palma. But note that on public buses, it’s over an hour from the cruise port each way. It’s worthwhile if you intend to spend the entire day at the beach. From Old Town, catch bus #25 to get there – it’s about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic.

Palma de Mallorca: Cruise port guide – what to do, see & eat

Palma de Mallorca cruise port is a popular stop for Mediterranean voyages – so how does one navigate the call and what’s there to do in the Spanish city?

Words by Eddi Fiegel

Palma de Mallorca cruise port, on the Spanish island of Mallorca, benefits from a splendid location on the edge of the dazzling Mediterranean, and luckily for anyone on cruises, there’s plenty to see in the Balearics’ largest city.

From its vast, spectacular, waterfront cathedral and the cobbled streets of the historic old town to sleek, contemporary art museums and chic, independent boutiques, you can easily fill a day, or more on a cruise to Palma de Mallorca.

There’s also a vibrant food scene with Michelin-starred restaurants sitting alongside traditional tapas bars and sea-view cafes. Not to mention great beaches. Here’s everything you need to know about Palma de Mallorca cruises.

How to get into town from Palma de Mallorca cruise port

You’re most likely to find yourself docking at Muelle de Poniente, the city’s major cruise ship terminal.

Many cruise ship operators run shuttle buses from Palma de Mallorca cruise port to the city’s Gothic cathedral (check with your own cruise operator) or there are public buses which run into town (fares around €1.50). The journey takes about 10 minutes. Otherwise, a taxi costs around €15 one way.

Alternatively, if you’ve got plenty of time and feel like some extra exercise, you could walk from Palma de Mallorca cruise port. It’ll take you about 45 minutes but it’s a pleasant, more or less straight stroll along the harbor, past the fishing boats and yachts into the main town center.

Things to do in Palma de Mallorca

Take a bus tour.

It may be a cliché but there’s nothing quite like an open-top sightseeing bus if you want to get an overview of Palma de Mallorca and cram in as many sights as possible. The Palma City Sightseeing tours take in most of the key Palma sights and there’s a hop on/hop off option.

La Seu – Palma’s Gothic Cathedral

With its Gothic spires towering over the seafront, Palma’s most famous – and impressive, building is also probably the one you’ll catch sight of first.

The huge, 14th-century Catedral-Basilica de Santa Maria de Mallorca [below, right] – popularly known as La Seu, is one of Europe’s largest Gothic cathedrals.

Wander down its towering knave to admire the stained-glass windows, especially the rose window – one of the largest in the world. Also worth looking out for is the ironwork ‘Crown of Thorns’ above the altar, created by Catalan architectural maverick Antoni Gaudí.

Almudaina Palace

Originally a Moorish fortress dating back to the 14th century, like the Cathedral, this Gothic palace, just alongside La Seu, is the official residence of the Spanish Royal family when they’re in Mallorca.

The lavish staterooms are laden with antiques, tapestries and art from the 17th century onwards and the palm-tree-filled, colonnaded courtyard is the perfect respite from the heat.

Explore the Old Town (Casco Antiguo)

The streets directly behind Palma Cathedral and the Almudaina Palace lead you into the labyrinthine cobbled streets and winding alleys of the Old Town. Along the way you’ll find cafes and restaurants aplenty but also keep an eye out for open doorways where you can spy traditional, plant-filled, Andalusian-style courtyards and patios.

Palma-de-Mallorca-castle

Go shopping (or window shopping) along Passeig d’es Born and Plaça Major

Over the last few years, Palma de Mallorca has become known for its independent fashion designers and boutiques. Whether you’re on the lookout for something one-off or fancy a browse, you’ll find something for most budgets from Louis Vuitton to Zara.

The Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma (aka Es Baluard)

Part Medieval fortress and part steel and glass box, Es Baluard has works by major artists from Picasso, Gaugin and Cezanne to Miro and Magritte. Even if you’re not an art fan, the building is almost as impressive as the paintings.

The roof terrace has wonderful views over the harbour and the café and smart restaurant are also a popular haunt in their own right.

For spectacular views

For sweeping, bird’s eye views over the Bay of Mallorca, look no further than the 14th-century Castell (castle) de Bellver [above, left]. Built entirely in the round amidst a pine-laden hilltop above the bay, the Castell de Bellver is Spain’s only circular Gothic castle. There’s also a museum exploring the castle’s history and in the summer, classical music concerts in the courtyard.

Head for the beach

As for Palma de Mallorca beaches, if you want to feel the sand on your feet or dip a toe (or more), in the Mediterranean, the city’s small crescent-shaped beach at Portixol is ideal.

It’s beautifully unspoiled but this also means there’s not much in the way of deckchairs or sun loungers, so if you want to sunbathe or swim, you’ll want to bring your own towels.

Palma-de-Mallorca-palm-trees

If you’ve got time in Palma de Mallorca cruise port

For art fans, if you’re in town for a day, or even two, it’s worth heading out west of Palma to the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró – the studio where Catalan surrealist painter and sculptor Miró lived. It’ll take you about half an hour each way by bus from the city center or about ten minutes in a taxi. The Sightseeing Bus also stops there.

You can still see his paint pots and unfinished canvases more or less as he left them and there’s also a good collection of his paintings as well as gardens and a café.

Hidden Gems

Shelter from the heat amidst domed ceilings and original Moorish arches at the impressively intact, 12th-century Arab Baths aka Banys Arabes, in the Old Town. You can still see the different bathing areas and the peaceful, palm-tree-filled gardens are a shady oasis.

If you’ve only got one or two hours in Palma de Mallorca cruise port, don’t miss…

La Seu Cathedral and a wander through the Old Town.

Where to eat and drink in Palma de Mallorca cruise port

You’ll find great food all over town on cruises from Palma de Mallorca but the area known as La Lonja in the heart of the Old Town is a particularly good place to start. Otherwise, here are a few suggestions:

Vermuteria La Rosa, (Calle la Rosa 5)

For excellent tapas – and a glass of vermouth on the side, this contemporary bar, with industrial chic decor, is one of the best.

Lunch, dinner or tapas in Palma de Mallorca

La Paloma, (Calle Apuntadores, 16)

Housed in a traditional old building with rough-hewn stone walls and beamed ceilings, this is a long-standing Palma favorite. Now Swedish-run, you’ll find elegant but classic tapas as well as great value set lunch menus (menus del día – around €30 for three courses) featuring traditional Mallorcan fare including grilled meat and fish

Mercat de L’Olivar food market, (Plaça de l’Olivar)

Palma’s central, covered food market [above] is a must for foodies (if you’ve been to La Boqueria in Barcelona, this is the Palma equivalent).

Ogle at tantalizingly fresh prawns or plump, rosy tomatoes at the decorative stalls featuring the freshest fare both from Mallorca as well as mainland Spain. You can also eat at one of the many tapas bars around the market and stock up on Mallorcan charcuterie and wines as souvenirs or gifts.

Fine dining in Palma de Mallorca

Andana (Plaza de Espanya, 6)

Star Mallorcan female chef Maca de Cana made her name at her Michelin-starred restaurant in Port d’Alcudia in the island’s northeast, but opened this new outpost in a former railway station in 2020. Look out for grilled squid with garlic potatoes and mayonnaise and broken eggs, chips and truffle (booking essential).

For people-watching cafés and sundowners by the sea

If you’ve done your sightseeing on your Palma de Mallorca cruise and need to refuel, the cafés around the central Plaça Major square in the heart of the Old town are perfect for people-watching over a beer or tinto de verano (red wine with lemonade).

Otherwise, for sundowners by the sea, look no further than the terrace at Varadero (Camí de L’Escollera, Moll Vell).

Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port • Docking in the ‘Pearl of the Mediterranean’

It’s no wonder they call Mallorca the ‘gem of the Mediterranean.’ This Spanish island is an absolute stunner. Whether you want to meander through the winding alleyways of Palma, head to one of the beautiful beaches to swim in crystal clear water, or head further into the luscious Mallorcan countryside, Palma de Mallorca cruise port is well-positioned to explore everything this Balearic island has to offer.

*This site uses affiliate links, where I may receive a small commission at no cost to the reader.

A brief history of Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca existed through the Roman and Byzantine periods, but it’s the Moorish occupation which really left its mark on the city. The Moors- who largely came from Muslim countries in north Africa and the Middle East- arrived in the 8th century and stuck around until 1229.

Under Islamic rule, the Christian population was allowed to continue being, well, Christian, and although the Mallorcans had to pay a tax to their conquerors, the island actually flourished; controversially, all this flourishing was mostly down to piracy. Ships sailing through Balearic waters were often sacked (not fired, but ransacked for all their treasures), and this brought enormous wealth to the city and its people.

Eventually the Christian commercial seafarers grew rather annoyed with all the plundering of their ships, which is fair enough, and a Crusade was launched to regain control of the Balearic waters. Palma de Mallorca was taken by James I of Aragon, and the island was officially declared a Kingdom.

Eventually Spain became one big nation, of which Mallorca is obviously part of. And with the arrival of mass tourism in the 1950s, and thanks to its continuing popularity as a tourist destination, it’s one of the wealthiest regions in the whole country. Over half of the island’s population live in Palma, and it’s especially popular with German and English visitors.

If you’re not sure exactly where Mallorca is- that’d be in the Balearic islands, which include Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. And this beautiful little archipelago is in the western Mediterranean, not far at all from the coast of Catalonia, Spain. (In fact, Catalan is an official language of Mallorca, along with Spanish.)

Where is Palma de Mallorca cruise port?

There are two options for cruise ships docking at Palma de Mallorca cruise port, although they’re fairly close together.

The first, larger spot is Dique del Oeste which juts out into the sea next to an old fortress. This is slightly further out of the city, but taxis can drive right up to the cruise terminal.

The second port is right next to Dique del Oeste but much more accessible. This is Muelle de Poniente , where smaller ships can dock. There’s a bus stop directly outside the terminal building, which can take you into the city.

How to get from the airport to Palma de Mallorca cruise port

There are plenty of taxis at the airport, and the journey from airport to port takes around fifteen minutes. It’ll cost about €40-50. (2024) If you’re not sure which terminal your ship will be docked at, just say the name of the ship to the taxi driver; they’ll know where to drop you.

You can often save money by booking a transfer in advance as these aren’t metered. Check transfers from Palma de Mallorca airport to the cruise port.

How to get from Palma de Mallorca cruise port to the city

When you dock at Palma de Mallorca, chances are that you’ll be able to spy the magnificent Seu Cathedral from your ship. (It’s the gargantuan stone block along the coastline, and unless you’re facing the wrong way you can’t miss it.)

Most cruise companies organise a shuttle bus to take passengers from Palma de Mallorca cruise port into the city. The journey takes about 10-15 minutes each way, depending on traffic, and shuttle buses drop passengers very close to the cathedral. However, this can be very expensive! If there’s a group of you (or even just, more than one), it might be worth taking a taxi or bus.

There are always plenty of licensed taxis waiting directly outside both cruise terminals.

The Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus has a stop at the exit of Muelle de Poniente, and the circular route is a great way to see the city. Book tickets in advance.

You can also take the public bus from the cruise port to Palma de Mallorca city centre. Take Line 1- which runs every 15 minutes- either from the entrance to Dique del Oeste, or outside the exit of the Station 2 building at Muelle de Poniente. It’ll cost €3 (2024) and you’ll need to have cash on you.

Check the timetable for Line 1.

It is possible to walk from Palma de Mallorca cruise port to the city centre, but it’ll take about 50-90 minutes depending on which terminal you dock at. The walk is lovely, taking you all the way along the seafront past yacht clubs, hotels and old buildings, castles, and city walls; but a 90 minute walk might not be everyone’s cup of tea even on flat terrain.

What’s within walking distance of the cruise port?

Aside from the 90 minute walk to the city, you mean?

Right pals, so if you’ve not got a lot of time on your hands- maybe you’re a crew member with only an hour or so off, or maybe you’re a passenger who just simply can’t be bothered to have a full on day in the city- there is one main attraction near the cruise terminal.

And that is Porto Pi Centro . This is basically a big shopping mall, which has just about everything you need for sale. Head here for an afternoon shopping, to use some wifi, or to grab a bite to eat. This is also a go-to for stocking up on snacks and toiletries, for just about every crew member I know. If you can’t get it anywhere else on your route, you’ll probably find it at Porto Pi.

Except on Sundays and public holidays, because it’ll most certainly be closed.

The best things to do in Palma de Mallorca cruise port

Visit la seu cathedral.

La Seu Cathedral is unmissable. Literally. If you go into the city of Palma de Mallorca, there is no way you can miss it: this gargantuan sandstone block with its gothic buttresses and turrets dominates the city’s waterfront, and in the late afternoon sunshine as the shadows get longer, it’s particularly breathtaking.

The cathedral is built on the site of a mosque; old James of Aragon decided to construct it here to assert Christianity as the dominant religion once he’d reclaimed Mallorca. And while he may have started work on the cathedral in 1229, it wasn’t actually finished until 1601- this was quite the project. In 1903, Gaudí was drafted in to help with the restoration of La Seu, as he was all the rage across the water in Barcelona. Some of Gaudí’s changes and influences can be seen in the cathedral, although he actually left the project earlier after too many squabbles with the bishop.

You can buy tickets to La Seu on the day, but to avoid queues purchase a skip-the-line ticket .

stunning architecture of La Seu cathedral

Wander through the old town

The winding alleyways of the old town of Palma de Mallorca are so, so pretty and well worth a visit. In fact, on my first visit I was positively shocked at just how pretty the old town is; I’d previously thought this was a city filled with high-rise hotels and tacky tourist bars.

How very wrong I was.

You can instantly see the Moorish influence on the city centre’s layout, and the narrow alleys also provide some cool patches of shade in the hot summer months. The architecture is a historic blend of beautiful structures: from the Moorish fort and baths, and Gothic churches, to the Catalán Art Nouveau buildings embellished with swirls and colours and patterns, reminiscent of the architecture of Barcelona . The best thing of all is that although these days the old town is filled with boutique hotels and tapas bars and souvenir shops, somehow the area has retained its historic atmosphere; and even on the busiest of days, all you need to do is divert slightly from the main streets and you’ll be in an empty lane with near-silence surrounding you.

Book this hugely popular private walking tour to explore the Old Town with a local guide. Or for another, faster-paced view of the city, book a tour of Palma de Mallorca by e-bike .

Chill out at one of the beaches near Palma de Mallorca cruise port

There are a few beaches near Palma de Mallorca cruise port, but Cala Major is my favourite. This spot has fine white sand, and is fairly sheltered from any choppy waters and windy conditions, so the water is completely clear.

Cala Major is a resort on the outskirts of Palma de Mallorca, so in the summer months it can get crowded. But that also means there are plenty of beach bars, restaurants and cafes around. (Check out Sí o Sí Cookies for your home-baked cookie fix. They’re delish.)

I have visited Cala Major on foot before (it took about 45 minutes from Dique del Oeste to Cala Major), but the most convenient way of getting to this beach is by bus. Take the Line 4 bus from Porto Pi; the journey takes about 5 minutes and costs €2 (2024).

Check bus timetables for Line 4.

Another firm favourite for cruise passengers is Playa de Can Pere Antoni , which is a long sandy beach right near the city centre. This is a great option if you want to see Palma as well as have some beach time, although bear in mind that as a city beach it can get busy.

Keep following the coastline away from the centre of Palma, and you’ll reach the trendy neighbourhood of Portixol , which was once a fishing village. This is another long sandy beach, with a very different vibe to the more secluded cove of Cala Major, but it is a chilled spot which is also a great place to enjoy a seafront drink and a meal later in the day.

Cala Major, best beach near Palma de Mallorca cruise port

Try an Ensaïmada

Ensaïmadas are big swirls of Mallorcan pastry, which are traditionally made with pork lard (saïm being the Catalan word for it). Don’t get me wrong, there’s something about pork lard in a sweet pastry that seems a little gross, but Ensaïmadas are really, really delicious.

These days, as well as plain swirls dusted with icing sugar, you can buy filled Ensaïmadas- the most common filling being ‘angel hair,’ which is the stringy strands of pumpkin, sweetened and made into a jam. Either buy a huge one in a traditional octagonal box, or try a small one instead.

The most popular place to buy Ensaïmadas in Palma de Mallorca is Horno Santo Cristo , but there are plenty of other really great bakeries in town.

Shop till you drop

Palma de Mallorca cruise port is a great shopping destination, so if you’re a shopper then you’re going to love it here. The Passeig des Born with its leafy central avenue of trees, and Avinguda Jaume III with its covered walkways, are the major players when it comes to big international brands and high-end boutiques.

And for smaller shops, artistic boutiques, specialist delis and galleries (as well as more of those international brands), head in to the labyrinth of streets of the Old Town, behind the cathedral.

If you’re wondering what souvenirs to buy in Mallorca, look for Mallorcan-made pottery and baskets, olive oil, Flor de Sal (that’s Mallorcan sea salt), or ‘roba de llengos’ fabric. This strong, dyed fabric, is a type of Mallorcan ikat which originated in the Far East. It’s now used to make bags, tablecloths, cushions and beach towels, so there’s plenty of options for your roba de llengos needs.

colourful buildings with Christmas lights near Palma de Mallorca cruise port

Visit one of Palma de Mallorca’s museums

If you want to discover a bit about Mallorcan culture (whilst perhaps staying out of the heat), there are plenty of museums, palaces and galleries to visit in Palma de Mallorca.

Bellver Castle is a 14th century hilltop castle located in between Palma de Mallorca cruise port and the city centre. The Gothic circular fortress was built by King Jaume II of Mallorca, and although it later became a prison, these days it houses the Municipal Museum of History. Check out artefacts from Roman, Arabian and Medieval times, showcasing Palma’s multicultural heritage, and if that doesn’t float your boat enough, just head there for the 360º views. (The Hop On Hop Off Bus has a stop at Bellver, FYI.)

The Palau March Museum is an absolute gem which often gets overlooked, even though it’s right next to the Cathedral. Set in an old family palace, the museum houses works of art by some of Spain’s most well-known artists, including Picasso, Miró and Dalí, and has a courtyard filled with sculptures. Aside from the fact that the house is beautiful , the most interesting thing for me is the Mallorcan cartography on display. Mallorca’s history as a seafaring nation led to its own unique style of cartography, which was developed by a predominantly Jewish collective of cartographers who resided in Mallorca. (Once upon a time there was a sizeable Jewish population in the city, particularly during the days of Muslim rule.) The maps these cartographers drew were stunning, but also unique in that they were so colourful and very illustrative; mountains and rivers are drawn on, and tiny people cross the paper on the trade routes across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The Royal Palace of La Almudaina is the official residence of the Spanish king and queen when they come to visit Mallorca. There has been an alcazar on this site since the days of Moorish rule, but when Jaume II arrived on the scene he converted the building to more of a gothic vibe. There are hints of Islamic architecture to be spotted around the building, like the archways at the front of the building, or the stone baths within. Part of the royal apartments are open for visitors, and the gardens at the side of the palace also make a beaut spot to sit and watch the world go by.

Other popular spots include Es Baluard museum of contemporary art , the Museo Mallorca , and the Fundació Miró Mallorca , which is in Cala Major and is dedicated to the work of artist Joan Miró.

Get the train to Sóller

Full disclaimer here folks: as a crew member, I’ve never had time to get the famous wooden train from Palma de Mallorca to Sóller, but it’s on my list. The reason for this isn’t necessarily the length of the journey- a one-way trip takes just an hour- but the train runs roughly once every couple of hours. Time is of the essence when you’ve got to get back to work; for cruise ship passengers the timetable is a much easier challenge to navigate.

The iconic wooden train began chugging along the tracks through the brilliant Sierra Norte countryside back in 1912, and once you reach the pretty town of Sóller you can hop onto a tram to take you down to Port Sóller and its little harbour.

The best excursions from Palma de Mallorca cruise port

The island of Mallorca is incredibly pretty, verdant green landscapes, sweeping mountain ranges, and stunning rocky outcrops into turquoise water. If you’ve already seen enough of Palma de Mallorca, it’s a really great idea to head out into the countryside and explore the island even further, either on your own or as part of a tour.

This six hour private tour is ideal for cruise ship passengers . It doesn’t just take you to visit the cobbled streets of Valdemossa, through the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, and on to Sóller, but it’s also covered by Viator’s guarantee to return you well in time to your ship.

Another perfect excursion- for more thrill-seeking cruise ship passengers- is this Coasteering Trip. The trip lasts four hours, you’ll be picked up and dropped off at the cruise port, and shown how to make your way along Mallorca’s rocky coastline using a combination of abseiling, climbing, swimming and cliff jumping. There is a guide with you the whole way, and the minimum age limit is eight years old.

Or hire a car and head off on your own tour of the island, wherever the wind takes you! I had an amazing road trip to the tiny town of Andratx right up in the Tramuntana mountains, which we were able to do with just a few hours spare.

Charlie Chaplin lookalike in Andratx

Whatever your travel style is: beaches, history, beauty or adrenaline, if you’re docking at Palma de Mallorca cruise port, there really is something for everything here. Don’t skip this wonderful Mediterranean pearl- Palma is a true gem.

by Click-mallorca.com · Published 6 February, 2023 · Updated 21 June, 2024

Lucky you: you’re going on a Mediterranean cruise! We have created a mini guide for cruise passengers that are visiting Palma on a cruise stopover, so that you can make the most of your stop at the port of Palma . Because there are so many things to do in Mallorca that, if you are there for just one day, how do you choose?! Don’t worry, our local Mallorca experts are here to help!

In this article we will give you top suggestions for the best way to spend your cruise stopover in Palma de Mallorca with tips about how to get around the city and what to visit, as well as great ideas of shore excursions to discover more of the island.

cruise ship in port of palma de mallorca

The port of Palma de Mallorca is one of the most important cruise ports in the entire Mediterranean, receiving almost 2 million passengers in 2022.

If you are sailing to Mallorca on a cruise ship, you will most likely arrive at one of Palma’s cruise terminals. Below you will find interesting information about the cruise terminals in the port of Palma, so that you can plan your visit to Mallorca.

Palma de Mallorca cruise terminal: where do cruise ships dock in Palma de Mallorca?

In Palma de Mallorca, the cruise terminals are located on the Muelle de Poniente (Poniente Dock) stations 1 to 4 and on the Dique del Oeste (West Dock) at stations 5 and 6.

  • Muelle de Poniente : at this quay you will find the buildings of docking stations 1,2,3 and 4. Most cruise ships dock at the Muelle de Poniente, a modern terminal that is also a transit area for ferry passengers to the mainland and other Balearic Islands. This cruise terminal is located at the far end of Palma’s port and it’s around 6 km away from the old town of Palma. In the station 2 building you can find a cash machine, toilets and taxi service. The bus stop is right outside.
  • Dique del Oeste : cruise ship docking stations 5 and 6 are located in the Dique del Oeste quay. Larger cruise ships have to dock here, and the quay is also used when the Poniente terminal is full. The Dique del Oeste cruise area is even further from the historic centre of Palma and is located near the Porto Pi shopping centre and the San Carlos Castle, around 8 km from the main attractions.

On the map below, you can see the Muelle de Poniente highlighted in blue and, in red, the Dique del Oeste.

On the website https://www.portsdebalears.com/es/buques-en-puerto you can see where your cruise ship will dock when it arrives in the Port of Palma. Keep in mind that it won’t appear there until around a week before the cruise ship is due to arrive in Palma.

How to get from Palma de Mallorca cruise port to city center?

Although the cruise ships in Palma de Mallorca dock about 6 or 8 kilometers from the city center, it is relatively easy to get into Palma City . To go from the Palma cruise terminal to the center you can go by public bus, taxi, shuttle bus and even walking.

Palma de Mallorca cruise port shuttle bus

The first option in most cases to get from your ship to the center of Palma is the shuttle bus organized by your cruiseline itself to shuttle passengers from the ship to the center of Palma, normally to the Camino de la Escollera , located in the area of the Cathedral. It is only a 10-15 minute bus ride along the harbour road, and although the shuttle bus was always a courtesy service for the passengers, nowadays cruise companies are charging people using the service – and they are charging A LOT! So check first – you might pay as much as for a taxi.

You can take the public bus from either cruise terminal into the centre of Palma. It’s line 1 with EMT bus transport company: línea 1 de la EMT . This bus runs approximately every 15 minutes and stops at the entrance of the Dique del Oeste dock and in front of the exit of the station 2 building. It makes several stops in the center, a good option being to get off at the Plaza de España and from there walk to the Cathedral. Another option is to get off at Sa Feixina, and walk towards the Baluard museum and the Cathedral.

The price of the ticket is €3 in 2023. You can download the map of bus stops to see the route of the line.

Take the Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Tour :

The hop-on hop-off tourist bus is a great way to see the city of Palma at your own pace. These tour buses are in all major cities, and they are very popular for people visiting on a cruise, as they have stops at the main monuments and places of interest in Palma, and allow you to enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city at the same time. This bus tour is ideal for people who are just in Palma for one day .

The tourist bus in Palma has a stop in front of the cruise zone of the Muelle de Poniente , in front of station 2. For cruise passengers whose cruise docks at the Dique del Oeste , they must walk (about 10 minutes) to Porto Pi, where there’s a stop.

The whole route without getting off takes about 90 minutes, and the main stop in the center of Palma is next to the cathedral, on Avenida Antonio Maura. You can book tickets on our website at “ Shore Excursion: City Hop-On Hop-Off Tour ” and you also get a PDF guide with the purchase that details information about what to see at each stop.

If you have time and like to walk, you can enjoy the splendid views of the port and over the bay while strolling along the promenade and admiring the impressive yachts and small fishing boats. It is a 30-40 minute walk to the center of Palma, and we do not recommend it in very hot seasons as there is no shade. Perhaps a good tip is (whenever time permits) take the bus into Palma and walk back later to the cruise terminal.

If you’re in a hurry or don’t mind spending a few extra euros, a taxi might also be convenient. Tip: ALWAYS ask for a receipt.

what to do in Palma de Mallorca cruise port?

If you’re visiting Palma on a cruise, then that usually means that you are on the island for just one day. Here are some suggestions of things to do for those who don’t feel like straying too far from the port.

Visit Palma de Mallorca Old Town:

The historic old town of Palma de Mallorca is one of the gems of the Mediterranean . There is so much atmosphere in its old streets, and so many things to see…

palma mallorca spain cruise port

In the dungeons is a large museum dedicated to the intriguing history of the castle. This, together with the incredible view, makes it one of the highlights of Palma. As the Bellver Castle is not in the center of the city, the most convenient way to visit it is to take the hop-on hop-off bus that we mentioned.

Boat trips:

Palma Bay is Mallorca’s largest bay and there are many water activities available. Why not discover Mallorca from the sea on a relaxing catamaran tour or boat trip where you can enjoy beautiful views, swim and relax?

For those visiting Palma de Mallorca on a cruise holiday we recommend:

  • Catamaran Cruise in Palma de Mallorca : set sail on a 5-hour excursion on a sailing catamaran from the port of Palma with lunch and drinks included and visits to some beautiful coves where you can swim or snorkel.
  • Boat Trip in Palma de Mallorca : If you want a completely unique way to see the city of Palma and its port, we recommend this one-hour boat trip around the Bay of Palma where you can see the port, the cathedral and other important places from a unique perspective: from the sea. It is excellent to combine with a walking tour of the old town, since it leaves every hour and lasts only one hour, giving you plenty of time to do other things.

Beaches close to the cruise port:

There is nothing wrong with spending a day of your cruise at a beautiful beach where you can throw down your towel and soak up the Mediterranean sun. In the city of Palma there are some nice beaches with soft sand and good swimming conditions.

Our recommendation in the Palma area is the Can Pere Antoni Beach , which is located a short distance from the city center and has a magnificent view of the port and the cathedral: the best of both worlds! Due to its proximity to the city center, this beach is popular with locals, but you’re sure to find a good spot along its 750-meter length. Also, there are restaurants and facilities on the beach, which means you don’t even have to walk far for lunch.

Another good option is Illetes Beach . This is further out of the city, but it is the nicest beach close to the capital. You can find more information about this beach and many more in our extensive beach guide .

Palma De Mallorca Cruise Port Guide Info

Palma de Mallorca is the largest Spanish Balearic Island in the Western Mediterranean and a popular cruise destination located off the east coast of Spain. The island has a rich historic and cultural heritage, many natural treasures, and a good connection with the mainland and other three popular Balearic Islands: Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. The capital of Palma de Mallorca is Palma, an incredibly beautiful and lively city nestled in the Bay of Palma, 4 and 6km far away from the cruise ship terminals.

Cruise ships dock at Estacion Maritima cruise terminal, which is divided into two main areas: Muelle de Poniente, where Estacion Maritima buildings 1,2,3 and 4 are located, and Dique del Oeste, where buildings 5,6,7, and 8 are. Cruise passenger ships normally dock at Muelle de Poniente, a modern port which is 4km far from the historic heart of Palma, but when this cruise terminal is too busy, the cruise ships dock at Dique del Oeste, located by the commercial and industrial zone two kilometers further. Terminal buildings are relatively small but equipped with necessary amenities: restrooms, cafeteria, ATM, phone kiosks, and there are shuttle buses provided by a cruise company taking you into the city center.  In front of the terminal buildings, you can always find taxis and if you walk to the nearby bus station, it’s easy to catch a public bus serving numerous stations to the Palma Cathedral, the main historic landmark of Palma. For the enthusiasts, a walk might be a good idea, but bear in mind you need at least a 45-minute up to a 1-hour and a half walking to reach the Old Town.

The city of Palma has a wide variety of attractions featuring a blend of old and modern. The main religious and historic structure of the city is an impressive 13th-century Gothic gem – the Cathedral, locally known as La Seu, known for its beautiful stained glass windows and the world’s largest rose window. Right opposite the Cathedral is the Royal Palace of La Almudaina, originally built as a Moorish castle and later transformed into a palace for Spanish monarchs. The palace is still used by the Spanish Royalty, and one wing containing artistic and historic exhibits is open to the public.

The Old Town area is amazing to explore on foot, as you can enjoy a great variety of tapas bars, shops, boutiques, markets, simultaneously admiring the old quarter’s diverse styles in architecture. If you wish to explore a bit further, Bellver Castle is a must-see attraction well worth visiting. It is one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture, located on the hill around 3km away from the Cathedral (city center) and 2.5km away from the cruise terminal. However, if you get tired of walking and exploring the city’s historical and cultural legacy, you can unwind at one of Palma’s beaches, among which the city’s public beach, Cala Major and Portixol are the closest ones.

Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Off the eastern coast of Spain, Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, with some 310 miles of sparkling coastline. In valleys along the shore, little fishing villages sit tucked away, and narrow winding lanes lead past cozy stone cottages and old Moorish estates. Due to its favorable climate and strategic location, the isle has changed hands many times throughout history, enriching it with Roman, Arab and European influences. Passengers sailing into Palma de Mallorca will get an amazing view of the hilltop Bellver Castle, dating to the 14th century, and the city's landmark La Seu, a dramatic Gothic cathedral set just above the harbor. Most excursions visit both of these sites as well as the island's famous golden-sand beaches, backdropped by the breathtaking Tramuntana range. Countryside tours often highlight Valldemossa's Royal Carthusian Monastery, home to museums that showcase works from the likes of Pablo Picasso and Juli Ramos.

Book in advance and ensure you have the appropriate insurance. And do remember to check if you need to apply for an international driving license before you leave home.

Where to stay in palma.

We have a selection of recommended hotels that are firm favorites for cruise passengers and ourselves when visiting the city.

The hotels are either in the center or close to the attractive marina. They offer modern and spacious rooms and are ideal hotels to stay in before your cruise from Palma. The marina is located about 2,5km from the Old Town in the center, so choose the location that suits you best:

Marina location:

  • Hotel Victoria Grand Melia
  • Melia Palma Marina
  • Innside by Melia Palma Bosque

City center location:

  • Hotel Sant Jaume
  • AH Art Hotel Palma
  • Can Alomar Urban Luxury Retreat

How to spend 3 days before your cruise from Palma de Mallorca

Palma has one of Europe’s best historical quarters. It’s a compact city, a maze of shops, cafes, restaurants, striking architecture, and palaces. Spreading out to the marina and the surrounding beaches. A few days here before your cruise from Palma will feel like a mini holiday, even before you climb aboard your ship.

The Hop-on, Hop-off bus, a visitor’s best friend

As with all major cities, there is a hop-on, hop-off bus in Palma too. Ideal especially during the heat of the high season or for those who cannot walk great distances, the stops on the bus routes include all the major sights. And also a stop at the main cruise terminal. It is an excellent way to get around if you don’t mind some crowds and joining the queue.

Day 1- Palma Cathedral, Palace of La Almudaina & Shopping on the Golden Mile

Palma cathedral – a great starting point for your first day on the island of mallorca.

Start your day at Palma Cathedral. If you are in a group and want to split up and do different things, then the cathedral is a good meeting point to reconnect during the day.

The official name of this beautiful cathedral, a landmark in the city, is Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca, more commonly referred to as La Seu . It’s famous for its enormous rose window and wrought iron canopy. Do check the opening times for the cathedral before you visit.

We recommend buying a ticket with an audio guide to make the most of your time here. You can also include a tour of the terraces in your ticket, which gives you a spectacular view of Palma and beyond.

The Royal Palace of La Almudaina

Directly opposite the cathedral is the 14th-century Royal Palace of La Almudaina. This is the official residence of Spain’s Royal Family when they visit the island. Some areas of the palace are open to visitors, and the chapel, the parade ground, the baths, and the terraces are worth visiting.

A shopper’s paradise and the Golden Mile

From here, we suggest you head towards the historic square Plaça Major. Use the time on the way to explore the atmospheric side streets, as Palma is a real shoppers’ paradise. You will often find an outdoor market in the square, and one of the numerous cafes is an excellent place to stop for coffee and a bite to eat. Try the traditional Mallorcan ensaimada pastries.

If you’re looking for luxury brands and wide tree-lined boulevards, head to the area known as Palma’s Golden Mile, Passeig del Born. It’s easy to spend the rest of the day around this area, shopping, and sightseeing. Turn into Carrer de Sant Feliu for art galleries and exclusive home decor boutiques.

Finish the day by eating dinner at La Paloma. We love this rustic restaurant. They open at 5 pm if you want to eat early; otherwise, book a table in advance to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, very close by is the more formal restaurant Forn de Sant Joan; they also have a great cocktail menu.

Day 2 – Bellver Castle, Mercat de Santa Catalina & Joan Miró’s Workshops, followed by an afternoon at the beach

Start your 2nd day at the marina at one of the cafes along the waterfront. A morning stroll around the marina is a great walk. Indeed it’s our favorite part of the city where to stay, particularly at the Melia Palma Marina Hotel.

If you enjoy history, we recommend the short taxi ride to Bellver Castle – Castell de Bellver. The castle is just a few kilometers on a hill. Buy tickets in the visitor’s reception center upon arrival – but check their website before your visit for opening times and note the castle is closed on Mondays!

Originally built as a Royal castle by Jaume II in 1300, it is now a fantastic museum with outstanding architecture. Audio guides are readily available when buying your entrance ticket. Head to the top and be inspired by the spectacular view of Palma laid out before you.

The fantastic food market of Santa Catalina

If you prefer, head straight to Mercat de Santa Catalina to start your day. A foodie’s paradise, it is the oldest and one of the best food markets in Palma and is just a 20-minute walk from the marina. Here you are right on the edge of the Old Town in the charming neighborhood of Santa Catalina.

Specializing in fish, cheeses, fruit, and vegetables, you can buy local olive oils, fresh almonds, and wines. The market is open Monday through Saturday from 7 am until 4 pm. Order fresh tapas and a glass of local wine and sit in the sun if you are there around lunchtime.

Visit the workshops of Joan Miró, a portrait of life and art

While in Palma, you don’t want to miss a visit to the beautiful home, gardens, and workshops of the famous Catalan painter Joan Miró. Check out the website for opening hours. There is a cafe in the gardens and a great little gift shop.

Palma Beach Life

Time for the beach? You are spoilt for choice. Local buses are cheap in the city. Cala Major is one of the most popular. It’s a wide sandy beach but too far to walk from the center. The number 4 bus goes there from the marina. Otherwise, hop into a cab for the 10-minute drive.

Playa de Palma is the closest beach to the city. It’s a long sandy beach with great restaurants and numerous water sports. The beach is located 5km east of Palma. Get there using the bus stop opposite the cathedral at Plaça de la Reina and hop onto bus number 15. Alternatively, take a taxi from your hotel or rent bicycles and cycle the coastline to get there.

Santa Ponsa, a favorite family beach spot close to Palma, is a little further afield. Located about 25 minutes by taxi from Palma, you’ll find a great beach in a busy town with many choices for eating out and relaxing. And it’s an ideal spot for families with children and the chance to explore another part of the coast.

Finish your day back in the marina. If you are looking for a great restaurant with a view over the marina, try 49 Steps , it’s one of our favorites. Or, for something closer to the city center, try The Merchants , with a rooftop bar, to enjoy those after-dinner cocktails.

Day 3 – Best day trips from Palma

If you have time, we recommend using one of your pre- (or post) cruise days in Palma to see more of Mallorca Island. Our top choices for a day trip from Palma are:

  • Port d’Alcúdia and Drach Caves

Valldemossa and Sóller

It is easy to rent a car in Palma. The roads through the mountain ranges, Serra de Tramuntana and Serra de Llevant are excellent and some of the most scenic routes you will ever drive. If you opt for an electric car, there are charging points all over the island, including at public car parks.

With a rental car, you can zip around the island according to your schedule. But if you prefer not to tackle the traffic getting out of the city, book a guided tour with a trusted supplier.

Port d’Alcudia

Port d’Alcudia is 60km from Palma on the northeast coast of Mallorca. It’s an easy drive there across the island. It’s a beautiful beach destination next to the town of Alcudia. Enjoy the day at one of the many beaches and shopping in the old town’s cobbled streets.

Just 5km from Alcudia is the hidden gem of Platja des Coll Baix, situated on Peninsula La Victòria. The only way to get down to this beautiful quiet bay is by hiking across cliffs or by boat from Port d’Alcudia. It is lovely here, and it will be well worth it. Take plenty of water and snacks with you; there is just the beach and peace and quiet here.

If you are seeking nature and aren’t one to sit on the beach, opt for hiking the Alcudia Peninsular instead. Spring and Autumn are ideal times to hike. The unique flora and fauna, hidden coves, and clear blue water make this a fantastic way to spend your day.

Many guided tours start at Plaça de la Porta de Mallorca in the center of Alcudia. We recommend you visit the tourist office on Passeig de Pere Ventayol for maps and advice before you set off.

Combine your day excursion with a visit to the Drach Caves

Some guided tours with transport will even include visiting the spectacular Drach Caves, south of Alcudia in Porto Cristo on the islands’ east coast. These limestone caves are stunning. Tickets can be purchased in advance, but check the website for opening times. Tours often include a boat trip across Lake Martel.

A visit to the Drach Caves can be done separately as a day excursion. There is plenty to see in nearby Porto Cristo, and we recommend you combine a visit to the caves with a boat trip from Port Cristo to explore the fantastic east coast of the island. Many of the catamaran cruises also include lunch.

Port de Soller and Valldemossa, Palma de Mallorca

This is our favorite of all-day excursions from Palma.

Valldemossa, just 30 minutes north of Palma, is a beautiful small town that gives you a feeling of old Spain. Walk the streets, shop in the markets, and support local businesses by enjoying locally produced arts and crafts. Surrounded by citrus groves, a hike from the village towards the mountains offers fantastic views as you discover more tiny villages scattered in the hills.

From Valldemossa, drive to the remote village of Sóller. In a small, charming coastal village, old wooden trams run through the town. Hop on the tram at the train station, which is in the village itself, and ride the 20-minute journey to Port de Sóller. The harborside is a perfect place for lunch. A much quieter alternative to Palma, you will also see spectacular sunsets if you lengthen your stay into the evening.

How to take the historic train journey from Palma to Sóller

If you do not want to rent a car in Palma, we recommend you take the landmark wooden train to Sóller instead. It’s a popular and easy train journey winding through the mountains and tunnels with fantastic views. It’s sometimes called The Orange Express .

First, you must get to the train station in Palma. The Sóller train departs from Palma railway station, located close to Plaça de Espanya. To get to Palma railway station is a 10-minute journey time by taxi from the center, or about 15 minutes using a taxi from the marina, and a few minutes longer if you are traveling from the cruise port.

The train journey from Palma to Sóller is about 7km and takes around one hour. A return ticket will cost you approximately 25 euros per person. However, we recommend adding on the tram ticket too, for about 32 euros per person. (Please note that prices are subject to change).

Once you get to Sóller train station, a little tram takes you from the village down to Port de Sóller and the beach (a further 5km). Use the ticket to hop on the tram any time during your visit to Sóller. Buying the combination ticket will save you money. See train timetables and buy your tickets on their website here .

How to get to Palma Port for your Cruise from Palma de Mallorca

How to get to Palma Port for your cruise

There are six cruise terminals in Palma port (Port de Palma) located across two zones, Poniente and Paraires Quays (Estacion Maritima terminals 1,2,3 and 4, which most major cruise lines use) and Dique del Oeste (terminals 5 and 6). Check your cruise ticket for the correct terminal address you need.

The cruise passenger terminals are only a 15-minute taxi ride from the city center. However, the Poniente and Paraires Quays can be reached about 45 minutes along the seafront boulevard from the marina. Remember you have your cruise packing and may not want to walk (especially in high season) with your luggage.

The hop-on/hop-off sightseeing bus stops at Estacion Maritima too. It is stop number 14 on the red route.

Ask your hotel concierge to arrange a taxi for you on the morning of departure. It is the quickest and most convenient way to get to the cruise port from your cruise from Palma.

Check your cruise ticket for instructions about your departure port and allocated boarding time.

Spain 0 Comments 7858 Views

Palma cruise port is located on the Mallorca island’s southeastern coast and represents one of the most significant cruise ports in Europe in terms of passenger turnover. Being the most popular and the largest cruise port in Western Mediterranean, it annually welcomes over 1.5 million passengers. The cruise port of Palma is divided into four areas, which are represented by two quays designated for cruise ships (Muelle de Poniente and Dique del Oeste or simply called Porto Pi), a commercial dock, and a marina dock. The capital of Mallorca Island, Palma de Mallorca is well-known worldwide for its beautiful beaches, and architectural monuments and is recognized as the city having a uniquely cosmopolitan lifestyle.

What about Swimming in Palma Cruise Port?

  • In case there are more than 3 of you it would be sound to use a taxi sometimes;
  • Schedule your time carefully as the buses can be delayed (there were rare instances when tourists had to wait for a bus for a comparatively long period on their arrival at the airport and vice versa);
  • If your time at the port is limited, you can take a hop-on hop-off guided tour having an opportunity to discover Palma de Mallorca accompanied by a multi-language audio guide by a red double-decker (the cost of a ticket starts from 18 euros per person). The ticket is valid for 24 or 48 hours, so you can leave the bus anywhere on your route, enjoy the sights, and rejoin the route again at any time ;
  • If you want to save money we recommend you to get to the Palma Cathedral located in the old town where you can get a free walking tour that starts daily at 11 a.m. every day (except for Sundays). Those who are fond of walking a lot will undoubtedly appreciate it! For more information, please consult https://www.mallorcafreetour.com ;
  • As Palma de Mallorca is also famous for its numerous festivals and cultural events you can be a spectator of one of them. When planning your cruise, check whether there will be one of them the day you arrive at Palma.

Palma de Mallorca – What to See When Visiting on a Cruise

The port of Palma de Mallorca is a popular port on many mediterranean cruise itineraries. It has a variety of experiences to offer its visitors and many cruisers mention it as their favorite Mediterranean ports. This is not only for its beauty, but also accessibility as the cruise port is located in the heart of Palma.

If you want to discover the best attractions of the port of Palma, find out the best ways to get there and the distance between them, keep reading!

Cathedral + Royal Palace Palma De Mallorca

How do You Get From Palma de Mallorca Port into the City Centre?

The cheapest way to get from the port of Palma de Mallorca to the city centre is to walk, the journey will take around 45 minutes. Most cruise lines will also put on shuttle buses and local buses are also an option. Taxis are usually the most popular option at a cost of around €15 each way.

The cheapest way to get into the city centre from the cruise port is to walk. The journey takes about 40-45 minutes and it’s described by most passengers as being a pretty pleasant walk. This walking time is based on the cruise ships docking in the Estacio Maritima cruise port where the majority of cruise ships dock. There is another smaller less frequently used commercial port. To walk from the commercial port would take you around 90 minutes so generally isn’t advised.

Shuttle Bus/Local Bus

The majority of the cruise lines offer a shuttle bus to the city centre and there are also cheaper local options. If you are on a budget taking the €1.50 local bus can be a great option but this can take longer and is usually quite crowded.

The shuttle bus usually costs around €12.

Another option is to take the hop on hop off bus which stops outside the cruise port.

Outside the cruise terminal there is a taxi stop where you can pick one of the local cars which will drive you to one of the chosen locations mentioned below for around 15 euro (one way).

Taking a taxi over a shuttle bus gives you more freedom, you can even request to stop for a moment if you see something interesting on the way.

Palma de Mallorca – What to See On a Cruise, Buildings:

Palma cathedral.

Formally known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma or “La Seu”, is perhaps the most well known monument of the Spanish islands. Situated 4,7 km from the cruise terminal, it offers a good starting point for city exploring. It’s one of the tallest gothic cathedrals in the world, it reigns even over the Notre Dame de Paris. You can start discovering it from the virtual tour here: Mallorca Cathedral on 360 View.

Palma De Mallorca Cathedral

Royal Palace of La Almudaina

Just around the corner of La Seu Cathedral, you will find one of the most beautiful architectural gems in Spain. This structure consists of two main focal points – the King’s Palace & the Queen’s Palace, with magnificent “Arab baths” situated in between them. It’s possible to visit the interiors of the Palace, since it partially serves as a museum – but it is still an official residence of the King & Queen of Spain, who sometimes decide to host summer receptions at the property.

La Lonja de Palma

Palma hosts far more historical monuments that are worth visiting in the tight city centre. La Lonja de Palma used to be a structure for Colegio de la Mercaderia, but now it mainly serves as an architectonical decoration.

Plaza de Toros

Palma de Mallorca still hosts bullfighting games and can be visited by tourists. I wouldn’t recommend that you go to watch bull fighting but the design is impressive – the ancient arena really gives a majestic touch to the Old Town of Palma. Plaza de Toros is situated 5.5 km from the cruise terminal and around 1 km from the monuments mentioned before.

Castell de Bellver

On the way back to the cruise terminal, you can also visit Castell de Bellver. Situated around 1 km from the previous points and around 3.7 km from the cruise terminal, this castle located on a hill offers a wonderful panoramic views of the whole city of Palma.

Due to its shape, some people compare it to the Colosseum, even though it was never meant to look like a roman amphitheater. If you like long walks, then going up to the hill could be a nice exercise for you. However it is possible to drive all the way to the top of the hill, where you can be dropped off by a taxi. This castle is closed every Monday, so if Monday is your cruise port day in Palma, you unfortunately won’t be able to access it.

Castell de Bellver Palma De Mallorca

What Are The Best Beaches in Palma De Mallorca?

When it comes to the natural wonders of Mallorca, there are a lot of picturesque beaches you can enjoy during your stay in Palma. When it comes to cruises including Italy, Spain & France, you won’t find another port with these breathtaking “beach-day” spots. But you have to know where to look.

Good: Cala Mayor

The most popular and biggest beach of Palma is definitely Cala Mayor. It’s roughly 2.6 km from the cruise port and you can enjoy this epicenter of summer tourism even by a longer walk. However, even though the views are really nice, it usually is very crowded. We were there once with our July cruise and there were so many people on the beach that there was hardly a place to sit and the souvenir shops were laying one on another.

If you’re looking for a relaxing day, this beach isn’t the be a good choice for you. This is why we have found an alternative, a hidden gem that you probably won’t find in any other guide.

Better: Cala Comtesa

Situated 9 kms from the port, it only takes less than 12 minutes with the local taxi to get there (and around 15 euro). When I first went there, I was just expecting to see a less crowded, secluded beach. But what I’ve found exceeded all of my expectations.

This beach is the best place to enjoy marvellous panoramic views of all the surroundings, showcasing the magically blue waters and the disappearing horizon. It will remind you of a private island somewhere in the Caribbean.

There aren’t many people there, even during the high peak season, due to the fact that it’s not as close or popular as Cala Mayor. There is also a little beach bar there from which you can catch the taxi back to port when you want to.

Palma Aquarium

For the lovers of sea animals, this cruise port also offers a wonderful aquarium that can be compared to those of Valencia or Genoa, it’s one of the biggest aquariums in the world. It’s a little further from the port than the other attractions mentioned in this guide, but it’s around a 20 minute drive in a local taxi.

Coves del Drach

Many cruisers also love to visit Caves del Drach (literally translated as Dragon Caves) situated on the other side of the Mallorca island. They are quite far from the port – around 70 km – which doesn’t make them easy to access on your own.

The majority of cruise lines however do offer excursions to Coves del Drach, but in my humble opinion, there are so many wonderful things to see and admire in Palma itself that a place like Cuevas del Drach would be a great choice for a 2nd or 3rd cruise to Palma – I wouldn’t suggest fitting all of the possible attractions in one day.

Lluc Sanctuary

Another more distant attraction that cruisers love to visit is the Lluc Sanctuary – a stunning monastery & pilgrimage site.

It’s located around 55 kms from the port, so it’s also not advisable to visit it on your own, however it can be visited either with a dedicated excursion or with a joint one, that includes the Dragon Caves as well.

Lluc Sanctuary Palma

Palma de Mallorca is a destination for everyone, because both nature & beach lovers as well as tourists focused on the historical monuments will find what they look for there.  Hopefully this post made you understand why Palma keeps being chosen as the favorite Mediterranean destination by so many cruisers around the globe – me included.

Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port Guide

A Palma de Mallorca cruise brings you to the elegant capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands, set around the broad sweep of the Bay of Palma. The mighty La Seu Cathedral, towering over the old Gothic Quarter, dominates the skyline, while the entire bay is filled with yachts. Wooded hills form a backdrop, which lead to the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains that form the spine along the west of this surprisingly diverse island.

A stop in Palma de Mallorca on a Spain cruise is an opportunity to learn more about the culture of the Balearics. Lose yourself in the atmospheric Gothic Quarter behind the cathedral. Head to an old country mansion to learn about olive oil production. Marvel at the city’s artistic heritage at the Joan Miró Foundation. Drink cocktails in a palm-shaded garden or a hip rooftop bar, or relax on a sandy beach. This is one of the great joys of Palma de Mallorca; you don’t have to choose, as a day here will give you both sightseeing and beach time.

Top sights & attractions on cruises to palma de mallorca, la seu cathedral.

Palma’s mighty cathedral is a landmark of the city, its flying buttresses and delicate pinnacles adding to the sense of drama. La Seu took hundreds of years to build, incorporating the Mediterranean Gothic style blended with baroque and contemporary elements. The beautiful rose window is Europe’s largest, while part of the interior was created by a disciple of the famous Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi. For sweeping views of the city and sea, climb the 280 steps to the roof terraces.

Almudaina Palace

The Royal Palace of La Almudaina, next to Palma’s cathedral, is the official residence of the Spanish royals when they’re in Mallorca. There has been a fortified palace on this site since the 13th century when the Moorish rulers built a castle here after their conquest of Spain. What you see today reflects the Gothic style with elements of the original Moorish design. The lush S’Hort del Rei gardens, with splashing fountains, are a wonderful place to relax in the shade after your visit.

Bellver Castle

The circular Castell de Bellver was built in the 14th century on a pine-forested hill high above the city, designed by Pere Salva, the architect responsible for the Almudaina Palace. You’ll find three chunky towers overlooking a central courtyard, which is lined on the upper level by Gothic arches. Although Bellver means “lovely view”, the castle has a dark history; it served as a prison for centuries. Today, it’s used for concerts and houses the city’s municipal museum.

Learn More About Palma de Mallorca Shore Excursions

Things to do in palma de mallorca, cycle around the bay.

Palma is a wonderful city for exploring on two wheels, with a cycle trail leading all the way around the bay. Join a guided tour and learn about the city’s history while getting some exercise. You’ll see the cathedral, the Almudaina Palace, the Plaza Mayor square, the tangled streets of the Gothic Quarter, the yacht marinas, and parts of the medieval walls. There’s always a chance to stop for tasty tapas, too.

Ride the Soller Vintage Train

Palma is connected to the mountain town of Sóller by an enchanting vintage train that rattles up through the hills, passing olive groves and pinewoods. Sóller itself is an elegant old town hemmed in by craggy mountains. Its ancient sandstone buildings glow in the sunlight, and the streets are lined with chic craft shops, galleries, and boutiques. A 1912-built wooden tram connects the town to its pretty port, where you can eat fresh seafood and watch the fishing boats bobbing on the water.

Relax on the Beach

Mallorca is fringed by more than 200 beautiful beaches, from long stretches of golden sand to secluded rocky coves with aquamarine water. Several beaches are within easy reach of Palma, including Platja de San Pere Antoni, just beyond the cathedral, and Portixol, a sweep of sand in front of a little fishing village. West of the city, Cala Major is a pretty sandy bay fringed with palm trees. Chiringuitos (seasonal bars) line the beach, serving tapas and cold drinks.

Top Food & Drink in Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca has a thriving culinary scene that fuses hearty Mallorcan dishes with innovative international styles. Look out for arros brut , a rich rice stew with vegetables, spices, and seasonal meats. A bunyol de forat is a fried potato donut sprinkled with sugar, while ensaimada is a fluffy pastry filled with anything from pumpkin to cream or chocolate.

Pa amb oli is a delicious start to any meal—local bread is rubbed with garlic, fresh tomatoes, and olive oil. You’ll find restaurants all over Palma, from high-end establishments to seasonal chiringuitos on the beaches, as well as tapas bars. You can eat in the markets, too; try the Mercat de l’Olivar for eye-popping displays of fruit and vegetables and a variety of tiny restaurants, or the smaller Santa Catalina, where offerings include sushi, tapas, and oysters.

Culture & History of Palma de Mallorca

The city now known as Palma de Mallorca has a long and varied history. The Romans established a camp in the area around 120 BC, and some suggest the city's name, Palma, may come from the Roman consul who conquered the island or from the abundance of palm trees in the area. The city was later occupied by the Moors, who were present between 902 AD and 1229 AD, until Jaume I of Aragon reconquered the city.

Today, Palma is a stylish and bustling city that attracts visitors all year round, with a peak during the summer months. The local dialect, Mallorquí, a derivative of Catalan, is spoken alongside Catalan and Spanish, the co-official languages of the Balearic Islands. English is also commonly spoken due to the city's popularity among tourists and expats. Life in Palma moves at a slower pace than on the mainland, with many businesses observing the traditional afternoon siesta.

Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Ships visiting Palma de Mallorca dock at the well-equipped Port Estacio Maritima, on the opposite side of the bay from the cathedral. You’ll find restrooms, tourist information, taxis, Wi-Fi, a couple of cafés, and some souvenir shops here. The walk into the city center is pleasant, as you trace the curve of the bay, but it will take 30 to 40 minutes.

Transportation in Palma de Mallorca

Buses and taxis will take you from the Estacio Maritima (the cruise port) to the city center and beyond; a bus network connects the whole island. If you want to go to Sóller, check the times of the vintage train that runs from Palma and make sure the journey gets you back to the ship on time. Better still, join a shore excursion. One of the best ways to get around is by bicycle; there are bike lanes all over the city, so you won’t have to negotiate the traffic. Join a cycling tour for the best experience.

Shopping in Palma de Mallorca

Palma is an excellent place for shopping. You’ll find designer stores along the posh Passeig des Born in the city center—leather purses and sandals are often a good buy. El Corte Ingles is Spain’s most famous department store; Palma has three branches, the largest on Plaza España.

Beyond fashion, things to buy in Palma include cultured pearls grown on the island, olive oil and olive oil products, almonds, also grown on the island, and flor de sel salt from the local salt pans, as well as pretty, rustic pottery.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The currency of Spain is the Euro. Most places take credit or debit cards, but you may find cash useful for shopping in markets or leaving tips. There are ATMs all over the city. Spain doesn’t have a strong tipping culture, although 10% is normal in restaurants if service is not already included. You can round up the fare for taxi drivers and tip good tour guides 5 to 10 Euros per person.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria cruise port

Port Las Palmas de Gran Canaria cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a port city and capital of Grand Canaria Island. Las Palmas is also Canary islands' co-capital (together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife ). The city has population around 385,000, ranking it the Canaries' most populous and Spain's 9th-largest metro region.

Port Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (locode ESLPA) is managed by the Las Palmas Port Authority and currently operated under concession by GPCI-Global Ports Canary Islands (80:20 joint venture company between GPH-Global Ports Holding Plc and Groupo Sepcan SL).

  • In mid-November 2021, following a public tender process, the Las Palmas Port Authority awarded GPCI a 40-year concession (thru 2062) for the cruise operations on Gran Canaria.
  • The company GPCI also won the bidding for Puerto del Rosario on Fuerteventura (20-year concession deal) and Port Arrecife on Lanzarote (20-year concession deal).
  • GPH is currently the world's largest cruise port operator, with 24x total ports globally (as of 2022).
  • The concession deal included GPCI investing ~EUR 40 million into a new cruise terminal (in Las Palmas) and modular cruise terminal facilities in Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario.

The Canaries are very popular for winter cruising vacations due to the archipelago's mild climate in comparison to other European regions. Las Palmas Ports (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote) are also cruise destinations with great international flight connections. During the Coronavirus crisis in 2020, unlike other European seaports that closed for passenger shipping traffic, these Canary ports handled 0,5+ million tourists via "bubble cruises" around the Canaries.

The town was established in the late-15th century. Las Palmas is within easy reach from the renowned Playa del Ingles (beach), the desert-like dunes of Maspalomas (tourist town) and Mogan (small resort town). In the island's quieter corners are the old towns Teror and Arucas. Gran Canaria's scenery is marked by volcanic landscapes of craters, gorges, and mountains rising up to 1980 m (6500 ft). Mt Bandama (extinct crater) is reputed as the world's only inhabited crater.

During his discovery voyage in 1492, Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was forced to anchor at Grand Canaria to make repairs to the "La Pinta" sailship. During three subsequent voyages, he stopped again in the Canaries.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria cruise terminal

Gran Canaria is the 3rd largest island of the Canaries. Its capital, Las Palmas, is where cruise ships dock at Muelle Santa Catalina. The cruise terminal is located at just a 10-min walk from Parque Santa Catalina - a recreational park with outdoor cafes, restaurants, bars, shops) and Virtual Science Museum. Castle of the Light (built in 1474, now Large department store / Shopping Centre) and Church de la Luz are just outside the cruise port.

The town's main market and shopping area are a bit further and best reached via taxis. Playa de Las Canteras is just 15-min walk from the cruise port. Many of the city's landmarks are in Vegueta and Triana, and best reached via bus or taxi. Here travelers will find the Cathedral, Columbus House, Canarian Museum, Museum of Sacred Art, and Perez Goldaz Theatre.

In November 2023, Global Ports Canary Islands (a subsidiary of Global Ports Holding BV/2003-founded, currently the world's largest cruise port operator) started construction works as part of ~EUR 40 million investment into four new cruise terminals on the islands Gran Canaria (Las Palmas), Lanzarote (Arrecife), Fuerteventura (Puerto del Rosario) and La Palma (Puerto Naos). For the project was contracted Grupo SATOCAN (1985-founded Spanish construction company).

  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's new cruise terminal (at Santa Catalina Pier) can berth 4x cruise vessels simultaneously and is fitted with 3x PBBs (Passenger Boarding Bridges).
  • Arrecife de Lanzarote's terminal serves two cruise piers.
  • Puerto Naos' cruise terminal consists of a one-story building.
  • Arrecife's Puerto de los Marmoles cruise terminal is designed as a modular facility with max berthing capacity 3 vessels at the same time.
  • Puerto del Rosario's cruise terminal is also modular.
