BIRD WATCHING

Sikkim is known as a birdwatcher’s paradise and is rich in avifauna. Its avian population includes about 550 different species. The climate fluctuates between the lowlands’ tropical heat and the snowy areas’ alpine cold. The vegetation is classified into four different altitudinal zones: tropical, subtropical, temperate, and alpine. In certain locations, the distance between the balmy valleys and never-ending snow is barely 10 km. The humidity, rainfall, climate, and vegetation have clearly differentiated altitudinal zones as a result of the terrain’s telescoping. Due to the wide variety and abundance of the local bird life, this region is arguably one of the richest areas of its size in the entire world.

West Sikkim has excellent chances for birdwatching. One of the greatest birding locations in Sikkim, Barsey, situated at 3300 meters on a large ridge covered with protected forests of Silver Fir, hemlocks, magnolias, and rhododendrons is a paradise.

Bird Watching in Sikkim

Apart from Bird watching

There are several fantastic hiking trails and birding locations in Pemayangste and the neighboring hamlet of Pelling. These woodlands are home to some significant species, including the Maroon-Backed Accentor and Red-faced Liocichla.

In addition to migrating ducks, the Khecheopheri Lake occasionally supports uncommon species like the Black-necked Crane, the Black-tailed Crane, and many more.

The 10-day Dzongri trip is the greatest option for individuals who are excited about trekking in the high Himalayas if they want to view higher altitude birds. Blood Pheasant, Himalayan Monal, Brown Parotbill, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Cutia, Sapphire flycatcher, White-browed Bush Robin, Grandala, Rufous-breasted Accentors, White-winged and collared Grosbeaks, Spot-winged Rosefinch, and Grandala are some of the birds sighted on this trip.

The sanctuary begins at a height of 2000 meters with a subtropical forest, which is progressively replaced by wet temperate forest between 2500 and 3000 meters, and sub-alpine conifer forests above 3000 meters. It takes 12 km to get from Rabongla to Maenam Top, and a further 1 km of hiking will bring you to Bhaledhunga, a cockscomb-shaped stone. Is Sikkim Worth Visiting

Curled up in the far Northeastern region and popularly known for being the smallest Indian state, Sikkim offers its visitors a blend of quaint beauty, rich cultural heritage and natural beauty and a bountiful store of natural resources. Sikkim is often referred to as the gateway to India’s Northeastern region, which stands tall and fearless and boasts of its scenic landscapes, lush green forests, and cascading waterfalls, which will surely captivate the soul of nature lovers. Besides its raw beauty, the local cuisine is equally delightful, which leaves no chance to allure the tourists. There are also ancient monasteries, monuments and other architectural treasures, which are of epic cultural prominence, besides making them a revered place for different religions. These are some compelling reasons which make Sikkim worthy of being a must-visit and one of the destinations to be at the top of your travel itinerary. Nature’s true beauty, religious mysticism and glaciers are common to Sikkim and to its proud and rich culture, besides the architectural marvels, peaceful ambience is a guaranteed sight for experiencing tranquillity. Sikkim also hosts places with prominent historical importance and is also home to several endangered species and charming flowers. Sikkim also gifts its tourists with another very fascinating experience, which is described as an “ultimate end of the road” experience, a spectacular view of the horizon. These highlights of the unique destination are enough to compel one to keep the Sikkim tour plan on their bucket list.

History of Sikkim Tourism

Sikkim is popular in India as a state with a rich and diverse cultural tapestry, unique fauna and flora and lush greeneries. Turning down the history pages will allow us to gain knowledge of Sikkim’s vibrant legacy of monarchy, which the Chogyals managed, until Sikkim was integrated with India, back in the year 1975. Sikkim’s global popularity is primarily due to its intricately woven historical past, its mythology and the charming natural beauty which has triumphed in its attempt to make this state one of the fascinating travel destinations for massive travel enthusiasts. Only in the last decades, did Sikkim see a tremendous boom in its tourism. Initially, there was the adoption of a conservative approach by Sikkim, close to the post-annexation phase in India. Such an approach towards tourism was primarily based on their concern to protect their sensitive border location considering some of the regions within the state to be ecologically fragile. With gradual efforts, the Sikkim government opened doors for Sikkim tourism for the preservation of the pristine environment and the vibrant Sikkimese culture. It was during the 1980s when the Sikkim government strategically initiated the promotion of Sikkim tourism, upon knowing the true potential of this sector in regional development and impressive economic growth.

Importance of Tourism in Sikkim

Tourism in Sikkim is seen to be the only revenue source for this state. Thus, tourism is considered by Sikkim as their quest for a means that could encourage and ensure an increasingly self-reliant economy. Also, the overall sustainability of the local hotels and other tourism-related services is dependent upon the revenue generated from tourism, creating ample job opportunities for the locals with the influx of tourists. Besides this, the preservation of culture is equally essential, which is aided by tourism. The promotion of Sikkimese culture to the world by showcasing Sikkimese crafts, traditional art, and rituals is done through tourism. Tourism in Sikkim also stimulates the restoration and maintenance of historical monuments and sites. Tourism here in Sikkim has also aided in infrastructural development, which has uplifted the life quality of the locals, besides benefitting the tourists.

Why is Sikkim Famous for Tourism?

The exceptional blend of rich history and culture, its majestic beauty and its clean, green environment, which upholds sustainability has made Sikkim famous for Tourism. The dramatic and expansive landscape with the mighty tall Himalayas and serene waterfalls has, for a long time, mesmerised its visitors with its charm. Besides this, the sprout of spirituality embedded in the vibrant ancient Buddhist monasteries is not just the centre for learning but also preserves Buddhist culture in the form of murals and exquisite artefacts, which for the past many years have attracted and amazed cultural enthusiasts and also those seeking spirituality. Sikkim also popularly hosts unique biodiversity, with numerous parks and sanctuaries. Popular parks like the Khangchendzonga National Park host diverse species, which is a popular attraction among tourists. The thrills of adventure activities like river rafting or trekking have gained massive popularity in Sikkim, in addition to the exquisite culinary experience of the local dishes. The local delights like momos, kinema or thukpa have become incrementally famous among the tourists. The vibrant festivals in Sikkim, unique from those celebrated in mainland India also have a separate fan base. Another interesting fact about Sikkim is its recognition as India’s “fully organic state”. This has increasingly made Sikkim famous for tourism, especially among environmentally conscious visitors.

Permits for Protected and Restricted Areas

Being a borderland, with numerous neighbouring nations surrounding Sikkim, the concern for permits is an obvious outcome of its fragility in terms of security. the proximities for Sikkim with nations like China, and Bhutan have increasingly influenced the implementation of a "restricted area system". such a system has impacted tourism and travel in Sikkim. On the one hand, permits like "Protected Area Permit" (PAR) are essential in certain regions across the state, while for foreign nations, they must get an "Inner Line Permit". This permit is not necessary if you are an Indian national. There are still certain places within Sikkim which demand permits from all tourists, both Indians as well as foreign nationals. These places are thus categorised as "protected areas". places like Tsomgo Lake or Dzongri fall into this category of "protected area". Also, the protected border regions, like the Nathula Pass entirely prohibit foreign nationals from getting access to the place. Only the Indians are allowed to visit this place with special permits.

Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

Restricted Area Permit This is a special permit which is required by a person if they are a foreign national. This permit is entirely free of any cost. For persons of foreign nationality, one needs to only have a valid passport and an Indian visa. The transition throughout the permission procedure becomes speedy and easy-going when all the documentation submitted to the officials is valid. With proper and authentic documents, the process can be completed in less than 30 minutes. when foreign nationals are on a solo trip to the protected areas in Sikkim, permits or authorisation is not processed for such persons. thus, permits to these protected areas are given to both the Indian as well as foreign nations when they are in groups and are interested in treks and wrecking the interiors of Sikkim. it is only advisable to tourists to apply for PAP only from a trusted and government-authorised tour operator to make the tour hassle-free. Also, the entire trekking schedule is to be curated by these tour operators to the best of their knowledge. All the necessary documents like a valid ID proof, passport, authentic photo ID and a driving licence are important to acquire a PAP.

Protocols for Entering Sikkim

Protocols for Entering SikkimIn order to ensure that tourism in Sikkim gets a boost, there has been a considerable amount of discussions which led to some relaxations on entry protocols. Thus, to experience a hassle-free and beautiful tour across Sikkim, all tourists need to follow the strict travel guidelines. The special permits are required only for foreign nations and the Indians are exempted from the hassle of such permits when visiting famous sites like Rumtek, Phodong, Gangtok or Yuksom. However, there are still certain popular places in Sikkim like the Gurudongmar Lake, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, and Chopta Valley, which require both Indians and foreign nations to acquire permits. The validity for permits for foreigners lasts for 15 days, which can well be expanded to 30 days. easy access to these permits for foreigners can be acquired from centres situated in Siliguri, Darjeeling, Malli and Rongpo. The Indian Embassy is also responsible to guide the foreigners in getting their permits. It is, however, a strict guideline to abide by, especially if one is a foreign national, to visit the restricted or protected regions across Sikkim, in groups of two or maybe more. Having said that, if you are a foreign tourist travelling solo, you will not be allowed to join the group of Indians to visit the restricted areas. There are permits required for tourists planning to go for a day's trip to Tsongo and Nathula Pass from Gangtok. However, although Tsongmo is open for both foreign and Indian tourists, Nathula Pass is only accessible by Indians and not foreigners, for security concerns.

How to Reach Sikkim

We always ensure and emphasise the aspect of keeping our trekkers well-informed before starting with the Himalayan trek. The fine-line difference between a safe and a dangerous trek is always about having the right knowledge. This knowledge separates a truly enriching mountain experience from a superficial experience.

This segment is all about informing you about the schedule for each trekking day, what you should expect and how to prepare for the trek, in great detail to make the trek hassle-free.

Here are some tips to manage your travel for the Trek:

Travel via Flight:

Siliguri is connected to the rest of the part across India through Bagdogra Airport. If you are travelling from major cities like Mumbai, Bangalore or Delhi, you can easily book a direct flight to Bagdogra. However, it is advised that you ensure the flight is scheduled one day before the beginning of the trek so that you can spend one night in Siliguri. If there is an unavailability of tickets from your city or the flight cost directly to Bagdogra is beyond your budget, you have the option to book your flight to Kolkata and take a bus or a train to Siliguri.

A shared auto or a reserved cab is always available near the Bagdogra airport which will drop you at Siliguri town. It is always advised to plan your stay in Siliguri well in advance. Public transport is also available for Siliguri. You can take a shared auto from Bagdogra airport to Bihar More to catch a bus to Siliguri.

We shall pick you up from Siliguri for Dhotrey at 9 A.M on the 1st day of your trek. You can coordinate your pick-up by communicating with the driver in the morning.

Travel via Train:

If you are opting to take a flight to Kolkata or travel from Kolkata, instead of Bagdogra, you need a reservation from Sealdah to NJP or Siliguri Junction. This travel must be scheduled 1 day before your trek. Comparatively, flights to Kolkata are cheaper than those directly connected to Bagdogra. However, you need to make sure that your flight lands by 5 P.M in Kolkata to avoid the hassle of missing your train. There are different conveyance options available for you to travel from Kolkata airport to Sealdah station, like pre-paid taxis, online cabs or metre taxis. You can take one from the airport booking counter. Another affordable option for you is to take a bus to travel the distance. Make it a point to book the train that arrives at Siliguri Junction or NJP station by 8 A.M. Trains recommended for this trip are Darjeeling Mail (12343), Uttar Banga Express (13147) and Kanchan Kanya (13149).

If you arrive in Siliguri a day before the start of the trek, you can opt for any train, as per your convenience, which is available from Sealdah or Howrah. In this case, you must plan your stay in Siliguri. You can coordinate your travel to Dhotrey by communicating with your driver, early in the morning. Our pick-up from Siliguri to Dhotray is scheduled for 9 A.M.

Travel via Volvo:

It is also possible to travel from Kolkata to Siliguri via Volvo. The buses are available at Esplanade, to Siliguri Bus terminus and thereafter reach Gangtok via SNT buses or by a reserved cab that is available from Siliguri Junction.

Choosing to travel via Volvo is only recommended by us under circumstances where train tickets are not available., as the bus journey is hectic and at times, the buses miss their scheduled arrival time.

Staying in Siliguri

If you plan to stay in Siliguri, there are numerous options available. We do not recommend you plan a stay near NJP as the accommodations are below standard. We advise you to plan your stay at Bagdogra if you have a flight to catch the next morning Or stay near Hongkong Market area. This will be hassle-free.

Sikkim Tourism Weather

The overall weather conditions in Sikkim are favourable, with pleasant summers and chilly winters, which makes trekking and other outdoor explorations and adventures all the more exciting, amidst picturesque views of nature. However, deciding upon the best month to make a trip to Sikkim depends on personal preferences for weather conditions. On average, you can always plan a trip to Sikkim, during Spring or Autumn, when the weather is most temperate, brightening up the scenery during the day and the evening shadows deepening into blue and purple at dusk. During Spring , between March and May , the fluctuation in temperature is between 10 and 20°C, which is a perfect match for outdoor activities and enjoying the thrills of trekking. This season is best for nature lovers as they are greeted with crimson-red blooming flowers, with the sun casting a luminescent glow on the greenery. This season, tourists are reminded to pack their bags with essentials like lightweight apparel, comforting pairs of shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen, cameras and binoculars to enjoy bird-watching.

Autumn is also a delightful season to experience the exquisite beauty of Sikkim, which sets in during October and ends with the onset of December. This season is best for mainland tourists to escape the city’s hustle and bustle and the scornful temperature. In Sikkim, the autumn brings in a blush of balmy weather, when the temperature strikes just a mild 5°C and goes up to 15°C, making trekking and other fun outdoor activities a must-do. This season also gifts its visitors with some stunning captures of the mountains, which are sure to be etched down the memory lanes. The must-haves in your travel bags are a good and comfortable pair of shoes, a medium-weighing jacket to beat the cold, a scarf, a hat and those lenses, without a miss. The summers which set in from March and last till June are comfortable, unlike other Indian states. Here, the temperature is between 15 and 25°C, which is best for sightseeing places like “the Valley of Flowers” or hiking in Dzongri or Singalila Ridge. Besides these outdoor activities, the tourists are welcomed warm-heartedly to join the locals in their festivals and celebrations during Saga Dawa, celebrated around this season. This is a bonus for the tourists which adds cultural value to their trips to Sikkim during summers. The summers are also great for some fun activities like river rafting in Teesta, mountain biking, and paragliding. The month of July to September is the monsoon , which makes the weather conditions harsh with frequent buckets down. Such heavy downpours derail delightful plans of trekking or other outdoor activities as with frequent rain and landslides, it becomes life-threatening to plan a trip to Sikkim. Winter in Sikkim falls from December to February , rejigging Sikkim into a nearly magical land. This season witnesses snowfalls, dropping the temperature to as low as -5°C in higher altitudes, and in regions situated at lower altitudes, the temperature during this season ranges from 4 to 7°C. The ravishing beauty of the Himalayas with its snow-capped peaks can be captured in one’s lenses. This reveals a mesmerising sight to remember for a lifetime. The valley is enveloped in white snow, making skiing and fun activities a must-try for the tourists. The winters in Sikkim also bring into the scene some of the most vivacious celebrations in the Sikkimese culture, the Losoong festival, which marks “the New Year '' for the locals in Sikkim. If winter is your call, do not forget to pack these essentials like thermal wear, gloves, scarves, and insulated boots, to escape frost bites.

Best Months to Visit Sikkim

A plan to Sikkim will most importantly raise the question, “When is the best month/time to visit Sikkim”? The quest to find the right answer to your query stops right here. The best month to visit Sikkim is undeniably the spring season, from March to May and autumn, from October to November. Why choose these months for a trip? This seasonal guide will tell you exactly why you should visit Sikkim or plan a trip around these months. The moderate temperature, the burst of colours in the landscape with splashes of red and other vibrant colours from blossoms in the “Valley of Flowers”, experiencing the thrills of outdoor sports, special festive spirits giving a cultural tour of the state amidst treks and serenity of the place, is bound to leave you with some cherishing life-long memories. The wintry Sikkim which falls between December and February attracts snow lovers who are keen to experience the immortalising snowfalls in Sikkim, amidst the cultural festivities of the locals.

Best Time to visit Sikkim

Autumn and Spring are considered the two best times to visit Sikkim, which ensures tourists a fulfilling experience of the wonderful mildness of the weather, the high-spirited experience of the outdoor activities, the unique charm of the Sikkimese culture and festivities and the wondrous scenery. Customer reviews.

At times, there is a huge difference between what they offer and what they provide. However, SikkimTourism.org kept its promise to us. They put forth a lot of effort to make our trip to Sikkim the finest one ever.

SIKKIMTOURISM.ORG assisted me in planning a trip for my family and me. I spoke with other tour guides and looked through numerous websites. But none could compare to Sikkim Tourism’s degree of professionalism.

Mr. ROHIT phoned me in response to my letter inquiry. He is a really helpful dude. I had a lot of concerns for him, such as the weather in Sikkim and if it was OK to bring my 2-year-old, and he patiently responded to all of them.

We were able to organise our journey to Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathu La, Yumthang Valley, Lachung, and Darjeeling as a result of his insightful ideas.

The dates of our journey were February 7–15 of this year. The itinerary provided by Sikkim Tourism, our travel guide, was fantastic and guaranteed that our vacation will be memorable.

We need drivers who had a thorough understanding of the roads because Sikkim is situated in a hilly area and has twisty roads. We received these from SikkimTourism.ORG, which helped us feel secure.

Eight days were spent travelling. From day 1 to day 8, the schedule included all travel arrangements, information on the vehicles, accommodations, and meals. The crew, in particular Mr. Rohit, kept in touch with us well.

The accommodation, meals, and transportation arrangements were all well-taken care of. What I appreciated most were the safe travel itinerary and the on-time cab drivers. Overall, our trip was enjoyable. Thanks, SikkimToursim.org group

Excellent lodging, outstanding transportation, and lovely memories to cherish. Because of their smooth services, I would heartily suggest SIKKIMTOURISM.ORG tourism. I really appreciate it. Bravo to ROHIT and the rest of the SIKKIM TOURISM.ORG team.

In April 2019, my family and I travelled to Sikkim and Darjeeling. We reserved our tour with SIKKIMTOURISM.ORG to make travel easier. I must say that the accommodations for travel, the mode of transportation, and how the trip was planned were all excellent.
