London Underground Tickets & Travelcards

The Travelcard is a transport pass for London that gives you unlimited travel in London within certain zones . The prices vary according to the number of zones you need to travel through. Central London is in zone 1.

Travelcards are valid for 1 day, 7 days, 1 month or 1 year.

The passes are valid for travel on all types of transport in London including:

  • the Underground (the tube)
  • the local suburban trains within London
  • the Elizabeth Line (not west of West Drayton)
  • the Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
  • the London Overground
  • the buses all over London. A Travelcard for any zone allows you to use the buses in all zones (zones 1-6)

The 3 Day Travelcard, weekend Travelcard, Zone 1-2 & 2-6 One Day Travelcards are no longer available.

Visiting London for 1-7 days? See our guide to London’s transport tickets & passes . The Travelcard may not be the best ticket for your stay.

Single Underground Tickets

Single paper tickets on the London underground are expensive if you buy them from a tube station ticket machine:

  • £6.70 for one journey in zone 1 (central London) and between zone 1 and zones 2 to 6
  • See single ticket prices for all zones .

One Day Travelcards: 2024 prices

Using a Pay as you go Oyster card or a contactless card are the cheapest ways to pay for travel if you’re in London for 1-5 days. The daily cap is £8.50 per day for zones 1-2

If you really don’t want to use an Oyster card or don’t have a contactless card, the One Day Travelcard is the next best money-saving pass.

The paper Off peak One Day Travelcard for zone 1-6 is  £15.90. This is expensive, but still cheaper than paying the full cash fare for 3 underground trips in central London (3 x £6.70 = £20.10 ).

One Day Travelcard fares 2024

Peak v anytime travelcards.

One Day Travelcard prices are different if you travel during peak or off-peak times:

Anytime Travelcard Valid for travel at anytime. Off-Peak Travelcard For travel after 9.30am Monday–Friday and all day Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Top Tip: An Off-Peak One Day Travelcard for zones 1–6 costs  £10.40 with a Railcard .

Weekly Travelcards: 2024 prices

If you stay in London for 6–7 days and use the underground, trains, and buses every day, the weekly Travelcard is the most cost-effective travel pass.

The one-week pass including central London (zones 1-2) is  £42.70.

  • It can start on any day of the week
  • It’s valid for travel at anytime; there is no peak or off-peak rate.

Most places sell weekly Travelcards loaded onto a plastic Oyster card. There’s a £7 fee for the Oyster card.

Your fare on an Oyster card will automatically cap at the weekly Travelcard fare (this is already available on contactless cards). The cap starts on Monday and ends Sunday, so it mainly benefits Londoners or those working in London.

St Albans to London Peak with a Zone 1-2 Oystercard Season Ticket

There is no St Albans - Zones 1-2 season ticket all inclusive on one ticket. Any outboundary Travelcard must include at least Zone 6 and all the zones you will be travelling through. If you don't need unlimited travel around London, you can use a St Albans - London Thameslink season ticket which will allow you to get to London Bridge through Thameslink core.

You can buy a ticket from St Albans to boundary zone 2 at £18.50 anytime return. A travelcard from St Albans to zones 3-6 is £72.90 per week, a saving of £1.10 if you do make 4 journeys. As both seasons are zonal there is no problem using a fast train.

For some reason I was always under the impression that you had to tap in with your oyster regardless of whether it was a season card or not. Click to expand...

If a person with a Zone 1-2 Travelcard is moving to St Albans and needs travel to and from London and continued use of the Travelcard, I think we would usually advise a changeover rather than additional ticket. See this post from the RailUK Fares & Ticketing Guide.

Can you do a changeover between a Travelcard bought from a TfL (LU) ticket office and a National Rail outboundary travelcard/season?

Arctic Troll said: You have to tap in/out with your Oyster at the start and end of your journey, but if you're using a Travelcard within the zones of validity that is only where facilities exist. Oyster facilties do not exist at St Albans City (SAC), as it's not in the Oyster area, therefore there is no obligation to touch in there. You have to touch out within the zones. Click to expand...

3.7 When you use a National Rail service, you should touch your Oyster card on the yellow card reader before you start your journey, at the station you are leaving from; and at the end of your journey, when you arrive at your destination station. You can still use your Oyster card at stations where there is no yellow card reader or if it is not working provided that your Travelcard is valid for the journey you are making. You may be asked instead to show your Oyster card (and photocard where needed). 3.8 If you are using an Oyster card with a Travelcard season ticket (or tickets) loaded on to it and wish to start your journey from, or travel to, a destination outside the availability of your Travelcard season ticket, or on a route where your season ticket is not valid, you must buy a ticket for your journey. However, if your journey begins and ends at a station within the London National Rail Pay As You Go Area, you can follow the instructions set out in 3.19 and 3.20 provided you have sufficient pay as you go credit on your Oyster card to pay for the additional journey(s). Failure to either buy a ticket or follow the instructions laid out in 3.19 and 3.20 may mean you have to pay a penalty fare or you may be liable to prosecution. Click to expand...

Thankyou very much - great stuff
