A woman is still in her sea kayak as she watches a harbor seal who is curiously following her from behind.

Fort Flagler

Fort Flagler is located 30 minutes drive from Port Townsend and an equal drive time as Port Townsend from Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Port Angeles.   Fort Flagler boasts beautiful scenery & views, as well as historic buildings. The waters around Fort Flagler team with wildlife including an important migratory bird stopover areas, islands where seals and many bird species raise their young, otters, and places where we may see porpoises or larger members of the whale family.

We've also developed our own unique method for predicting when the bioluminscent plankton will be strong so that when when we go out the motions of our kayaks and paddles, as well as the motions of animals in the water will glow green. Our method has proven over 98% effective since 2017, and 100% effective since 2020.

Had a great time kayaking! The place looked closed up when we arrived, no one was there, but the folks in the cafe next door helped us get in touch with the owner, and we were able to get a time slot for about an hour later. We just tooled around a bit in the Fort Flagler area, very easy kayaking.

Guide to canoe slalom and canoe sprint at Paris 2024

There are 16 gold medals up for grabs across the canoe slalom and canoe sprint programmes at Paris 2024, including an exciting new addition in kayak cross.

The Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium will host the canoe slalom from 27 July to 5 August, before the canoe sprint takes place 6-10 August.

Here's all you need to know.

How do canoe slalom & canoe sprint work?

Canoe sprint, which made its Olympic debut in 1936, is held on flatwater and features head-to-head sprint races over 200m, 500m and 1,000m distances in boats of one, two or four athletes.

This discipline includes events raced in canoe (C) and kayak (K) boats.

Canoeists kneel in a boat and use a single-blade paddle on one side at a time, while kayakers race in a seated position using a double-bladed paddle.

Canoe slalom, a feature of the Games since 1972, is a timed run on a white-water course.

Slalom courses include up to 25 gates which the athletes must attempt to navigate, with downstream gates marked green and upstream gates coloured red.

A two-second time penalty is incurred for touching a gate, while there is a 50-second penalty for missing one.

Making its first appearance at an Olympics, kayak cross pits four athletes up against one another at the same time, on a course featuring 10 gates or obstacles.

Each discipline is represented by a code, for example K1 represents kayak single.

What events are included?

Canoe sprint:

Men's kayak single 1000m

Men's kayak double 500m

Men's kayak four 500m

Strong British team chase medals

Great Britain's team includes Olympic and world medallists.

At Tokyo 2020, Mallory Franklin won slalom silver in the women's C1, while the now-retired Liam Heath clinched sprint bronze in the K1 200m.

Franklin will compete in the women's canoe single (C1) and kayak cross in Paris, while Joe Clarke - winner of K1 gold at Rio 2016 before missing Tokyo - will contest the men's kayak single (K1) and kayak cross.

Also confirmed is world champion Kimberley Woods, winner of kayak cross gold last year, who will aim for medals in kayak single (K1) & kayak cross.

Tokyo 2020 Olympian Adam Burgess will be in canoe single (C1) action.

New Olympic Sports at the 2024 Games: Breaking, Kayak Cross, and More

Indonesian breakdancers perform in front of the Olympic rings

The Olympics is an ever-changing international competition, and new Olympic sports are constantly being added to the Games. What started with just 43 events in 9 sports in 1896 has since transformed into 363 medal events in 45 sports in 2024. With new Olympic sports and events being added to the lineup each year, it’s hard to keep track of exactly what’s new and what’s not.

The 2024 Olympics will see the inclusion of two new events: breaking and kayak cross . While some may believe skateboarding, surfing, and climbing are new additions, they actually debuted at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics . Each will return this year, but only sports climbing will see a new format with a separate bouldering and lead combined event and a speed event. In Tokyo, these events were rolled into one.

Breaking is the only brand new Olympic sport being added to the lineup this year. The cultural dance that started in 1970s New York by Black and Latine youth and debuted at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires .

This year, 16 men and 16 women will compete for medals. The one-on-one battles will feature three rounds, each one minute long. Nine judges will score the dancers based on creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity, and musicality, according to NBC . Unlike other dances, which are coordinated ahead of time to specific music, breakers do not know the music ahead of time and must improvise their routine to the beat.

So far, several teens have qualified for the breaking competition, including 17-year-old India Sardjoe , set to compete for The Netherlands, and 16-year-old Dominika Banevič, representing Lithuania. While breaking will be included in the 2024 games, it will not return for the 2028 games.

Meanwhile, canoe slalom will add a new event to its roster. While canoe slalom made its debut in 1972 (although women weren’t allowed to compete until 2020 ), this is kayak cross’s Olympic debut. The event features a combination of all of canoeing’s whitewater disciplines. Four competitors will compete simultaneously and begin the match from a platform high above the water. This year, 20-year-old Evy Leibfarth will be one of the youngest canoers to compete in the event.

Contrary to popular belief, flag football will not be at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Instead, fans will have to wait until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics to see the sport make its Olympic debut.

The 2024 Paris Olympics is set to begin Friday, July 26.

How to Watch All the Olympic Trials on Peacock and NBC: Swimming, Wrestling & More

To land a coveted roster spot on Team USA, athletes from several sports must first test their mettle during intensely competitive Olympic trials.

olympic kayak tours

Though still nearly three months away, each passing day brings American athletes a tad closer to achieving their Olympic dream of representing the United States at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, France. But before emerging phenoms and living legends alike have the distinct honor and privilege to sport the Stars and Stripes in the City of Light, they must first earn it.

While some events use different forms of criteria for an athlete to win a roster spot, many of the high-profile sports rely on trials to build out their teams. Chock full of pulse-pounding competitive moments that are often equally as spectacular as those in the Olympic events in which the athletes are vying to be a part of, Olympic trials are a roller coaster of extremes — extreme talent, extreme pride and, of course, extreme emotional swings as the best-of-the-best athletes lay it all on the line for a shot at immortal glory.

RELATED: The History of the Olympic Games, From Ancient Greece to the Modern Era

“All the drama we love about the Olympics begins with Making Team USA, when our nation’s best athletes vie to make the most competitive team in the world,” said Molly Solomon , Executive Producer & President of NBC Olympics Production. “In some events, it’s harder to qualify for the U.S. team than it is to win a medal at the Olympics themselves.”

Considering dreams can either be forged or shattered during these trials, the action is nail-biting and must-see to say the least. With that in mind, between those trials that have occurred and those on the horizon, here’s a look at the 2024 Olympic trial landscape.

Upcoming Olympic Trials

Quivers will be stocked and arrows will be nocked as the sixth and final Olympic trial event for archery takes place May 13-14 in Newberry, Florida, according to the U.S. Archery Team site . The trial event includes equipment inspection, open target practice each day, round robin matches, elimination matches and team simulation on May 14. If applicable, a shoot off will occur prior to the team being officially announced.

Katie Ledecky smiles after winning a race

The pool action is heating up as top swimmers like Katie Ledecky head to Indianapolis, Indiana, for the Olympic swimming trials June 15-23. Because of the sport’s high profile, for the first time ever, the heats will take place on the field of Lucas Oil Stadium — the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. In her quest to become the most-decorate female athlete in Olympic history, seven-time gold medalist Ledecky needs to win just three more medals to plant her flag. While Ledecky is targeting more hardware, the 46-year-old, two-time Olympian  Gabrielle Rose – who first swam for Brazil during the 1996 Atlanta Games before using her dual citizenship to represent Team USA during the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia — hopes to become the oldest qualifier to earn a roster spot. Caeleb Dressel, who earned five of his seven gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo Games, will also be on hand for the trials, along with six-time Olympic medalist Ryan Murphy. Fans can tune into Peacock for live coverage of the heats, and delayed coverage will also air on USA Network. Every event final will be broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock nightly, starting at 8 p.m. ET, per NBC Insider .

The best divers will take the plunge at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center June 17-23 in Knoxville, Tennessee, according to NBC Sports . When it comes to the board, Team USA Diving took home two silvers during the Tokyo Games, along with a bronze, courtesy of Krysta Palmer. She is one of five medalists from the 2020 Games in Japan set to return to the trials, including Tokyo Olympic synchronized 10m platform silver medalist Jessica Parratto, who’s aiming for her third Olympic appearance. Other than the women’s synchronized platform final, which will be shown on USA Network and Peacock, the heats will be shown exclusively on NBC and Peacock. Past Olympic Trials

Held in Orlando, Florida, the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials occurred Saturday, February 3. Against the balmy weather, Conner Mantz won the top spot in a field that featured more than 200 men while Fiona O’Keeffe, in her first professional marathon event, shocked everyone by setting a new record with a time of 2:22:10. Bolstered by a dynamic NBC broadcast team of Leigh Diffey, Kara Goucher, Lewis Johnson and Deena Kastor, live streaming coverage of the marathon trials was available to fans via Peacock, NBC.com and the NBC Sports App.

David Morris Taylor of USA celebrates after winning a match

America’s elite wrestlers showcased their talent during the sport’s Olympic trials that took place April 19-20 at Pennsylvania State University. In total, thirteen athletes won spots on Team USA, but of those, there are no returning gold medalists from the legendary 2020 team that medaled in nine of the 12 freestyle divisions, reports NBC . In a stunner of a match during the trials, 23-year-old Aaron Brooks defeated gold medalist and heavy favorite, David Taylor. Also, noteworthy is Helen Maroulis, who will make history as the first American female wrestler to compete in three Olympics. Didn’t get a chance to catch it live? No worries – wrestling fans can rewatch all the gritty grappling action from the trials on Peacock .

In similar fashion to the Olympic wrestling trials, the 2024 U.S. National Taekwondo Team Trials that were held January 5-7 in Charlotte, North Carolina provided no shortage of jaw-dropping upsets. At just 18 years old, Kristina Teachout defeated favorite Anastasija Zolotic, who in Tokyo became the second American and first American woman, to capture an Olympic gold medal in taekwondo, reports NBC . Also making their Olympic debut like Teachout are CJ Nickolas, Jonathan Healy and Faith Dillon.

Rowing, Canoe Slalom, Kayak

Streamed on NBC.com, the NBC Sports App and Peacock, the Olympic rowing trials were held April 4-7 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida. The canoe slalom and kayak cross Olympic trials first paddled through Montgomery, Alabama April 13-14 before making their way to RIVERSPORT in Oklahoma City April 26-27. The qualifiers and finals for each were simultaneously streamed across Peacock, NBC.com and the NBC Sports App. Want to relive the splashy action? Head on over to Peacock .

2024 Summer Olympics Ignite Fire for 2034 Utah Winter Games

Salt lake city will host its second olympic games, with venues on the slopes and right in the heart of downtown..

What color are the Olympic rings? What’s the age limit for Olympic athletes? Which country has hosted the most Olympics?* Maybe you can’t swim 100 meters in a minute or do a flip on a balance beam, but if you can answer these questions, you win the gold medal in Olympic trivia. And that’s just about the same. Either way, it’s time to put the finishing touches on your routine: The 2024 Summer Olympics are just around the corner.

2024 Olympic Games

Where are the 2024 Olympics? Here’s a hint: You shouldn’t be surprised if your neighbors start sporting berets and carrying baguettes around in their fashionable fabric totes. Yes, Francophiles, Paris is hosting the games from July 26 to August 11. Keep track with the official countdown on the Summer Games site.

Can’t wait that long? Catch some of the Olympic trials 2024 on YouTube, including 3x3 basketball , an event that debuted at the Tokyo Games held in 2021. That’s not the only new or nearly new event. There will also be:

  • Breaking (aka break dancing)
  • Men’s artistic swimming
  • Marathon race walk mixed relay
  • Surfing (to be held in Tahiti), debuted in Tokyo
  • Skateboarding, debuted in Tokyo
  • Sport climbing, debuted in Tokyo
  • Track repechage round: Athletes have a second chance to qualify for semifinals in a “lucky losers” format.

In 2028, cricket will make a triumphant return — it was last included in 1900 — along with flag football and squash. Keyboarding and TV remote flipping have yet to be added, but we’ll keep flexing our fingers, just in case.

Utah Olympic Venues

We know a bit about Olympic events here in Utah. We hosted a pretty epic 2002 Winter Games ourselves, and we still have the venues — and the Salt Lake City Olympic Park cauldron — to prove it. In fact, we’ll be using them again in 2034 (skis and fingers crossed!).

Ski Jumping

It’s practically an Olympic village in Park City, where you can experience a bit of what it was like at the 2002 Games. Head over to Utah Olympic Park , on Olympic Parkway in Park City, Utah, where several events were held for both the Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

It’s now an official training site for elite athletes, but it’s also open to the rest of us. You’re welcome to watch the future competitors practice their flips and twists on the six Nordic ski jumps, landing in a pool of water instead of snow.

Bobsledding

In fact, who needs snow? There’s both a summer and winter bobsled experience at the Olympic sliding track. Other year-round, thrill-seeker activities include airbag jumps, extreme sledding, an alpine slide, a zipline and a ropes course. Or, you can just get a bird’s-eye view from the chair lifts.

Entrance to the Park City Olympic Park and museum is free, and you can walk around the grounds and facilities. There is a charge for the activities.

Ice Skating

In Salt Lake Valley, visit the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns. There you can work on your speed skating skills or figure skating routine. If it’s good enough for Nathan Chen, it’s good enough for you. You can even take a curling lesson. Hey, if you start working on your sweeping now, maybe you can qualify for 2034.

Where Are the Next Olympics?

If your emotional batteries need regular charging, you might want to plan your vacations around the Olympics. Every two years, alternating between the Winter and Summer Games, you can get your fill of rousing music, stirring stories and inspiring athleticism. Future Olympic sites include some repeat hosts and some new ones.

  • 2026 Winter Olympics : Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy (also hosted in ’56)
  • 2028 Summer Olympics : Los Angeles (both ‘32 and ‘84)
  • 2030 Winter Olympics : French Alps, France (preferred host, to be announced in July)
  • 2032 Summer Olympics : Brisbane, Australia
  • 2034 Winter Olympics : Salt Lake City, Utah (preferred host)

In November 2023, Salt Lake City was named the preferred host of the 2034 Winter Olympics; the International Olympics Committee is expected to formally choose Utah in July. While hosting is often a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it could become a more permanent event here. Gov. Spencer Cox said the IOC is considering forming a core group of host sites, with each hosting every 16-20 years. He said Utah is well-positioned to be one of those.

2034 Winter Olympics

Utah was selected as the preferred site for 2034 thanks to the extensive planning of local organizers. The Games committee said it will use existing venues such as the Utah Olympic Oval for long track speed skating; Park City resorts , Snowbasin and Soldier Hollow Nordic Center for skiing events; and the Utah Olympic Park for skiing and snowboarding.

There are also plans to bring some of the show to downtown Salt Lake City . New events, including ski and snowboarding big air, may be contested at Block 85 — the site of 2002’s medal plaza. Just to the southwest, at the Delta Center, you may watch figure skating and short-track speed skating. And at the Salt Palace Convention Center, there’s curling. The Maverik Center, in West Valley, may be home for the hockey games.

The University of Utah will again play a major role, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies at Rice-Eccles Stadium, as well as housing all the athletes in a centralized village.

Although it will be a few years before international athletes and attendees converge on Utah for the Games, you don’t need to wait to fuel your fire. Run with a torch (British for flashlight) around Rice-Eccles, followed by a tour of a venue or two. Better yet, go for a ski run (or a bike ride in summer) at one of Utah’s ski resorts . End your day with some pictures at the medal plaza, ‘cause that’s what all the best athletes do.

*In case you’re not a trivia medalist, the answers are: blue, black, red, yellow, green; no age limit; United States.

Fans are following Taylor Swift to Europe after finding Eras Tour tickets less costly there

Thousands of Taylor Swift fans are following her across the pond after missing out on her U.S. concert tour last year or being put off by marked-up ticket prices.

Taylor Swift fans drinking at The Black Dog in Vauxhall, south London, said they were there thanks to the track “The Black Dog,” in which the singer describes monitoring an unnamed ex’s visit “into some bar called The Black Dog,” through location share on her phone.

As Taylor Swift prepares to launch the Europe leg of her blockbuster Eras tour, thousands of her fans from the U.S. and Canada are following her across the pond. LONDON (AP) — Thousands of ride-or-die Taylor Swift fans who missed out on her U.S. concert tour last year or didn’t want to buy exorbitantly priced tickets to see her again found an out-of-the-way solution: Fly to Europe.

The pop star is scheduled to kick off the 18-city Europe leg of her record-setting Eras Tour in Paris on Thursday, and planeloads of Swifties plan to follow Miss Americana across the pond in the coming weeks. The arena where Swift is appearing said Americans bought 20% of the tickets for her four sold-out shows. Stockholm, the tour’s next stop, expects about 10,000 concertgoers from the U.S.

A concert might sound like an odd raison d’etre for visiting a foreign country, especially when fans can watch the Eras Tour from home via the documentary now streaming on Disney+. Yet online travel company Expedia says continent-hopping by Swift’s devotees is part of a larger trend it dubbed “tour tourism” while observing a pattern that emerged during Beyoncé's Renaissance world tour .

Some North American fans who plan to fly overseas for the Eras Tour said they justified the expense after noticing that tighter restrictions on ticket fees and resales in Europe made seeing Swift perform abroad no more costly — and potentially cheaper — than catching her closer to home .

“They said, ’Wait a minute, I can either spend $1,500 to go see my favorite artist in Miami, or I can take that $1,500 and buy a concert ticket, a round-trip plane ticket, and three nights in a hotel room,” Melanie Fish, an Expedia spokesperson and travel expert, said.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz beams while holding up the so-called Taylor Swift bill he signed into law as lawmakers, First Avenue employees and online ticket buyers clap Tuesday, May 7, 2024, inside the First Avenue concert venue in Minneapolis. The law, prompted by the frustration a legislator felt at not being able to buy tickets to Swift's 2023 concert in Minneapolis, will require ticket sellers to disclose all fees up front and prohibit resellers from selling more than one copy of a ticket for live events held in Minnesota, among other measures. (AP Photo/Trisha Ahmed)

That was the experience of Jennifer Warren, 43, who lives in St. Catharines, a city in the Niagara region of Ontario. She and her 11-year-old son love Swift but had no luck scoring what she considered as decently priced tickets in the U.S. Undeterred, Warren and her husband decided to plan a European vacation around wherever she managed to get seats. It turned out to be Hamburg, Germany.

AP AUDIO: Fans are following Taylor Swift to Europe after finding Eras Tour tickets less costly there

AP correspondent Jennifer King reports Taylor Swift is heading to Europe, and her U.S. fans are following.

“You get out, you get to see the world, and you get to see your favorite artist or performer at the same time, so there are a lot of wins to it,” said Warren, who works as the director of research and innovation for a mutual insurance company.

The three VIP tickets she secured close to the stage — “I would call it brute-force dumb luck” — cost 600 euros ($646) each. Swift subsequently announced six November tour dates in Toronto, within driving distance of Warren’s home. “Absolute nose-bleed seats” already are going for 3,000 Canadian dollars ($2,194) on secondary resale sites like Viagogo, Warren said.

TOUR TOURISM: IS IT REALLY A THING?

Hard-core fans trailing their favorite singer or band on tour is not a new phenomenon. “Groupie” emerged in the late 1960s as a somewhat derogatory word for the ardent followers of rock bands. Deadheads took to the road in the 1970s to pursue the Grateful Dead from city to city.

More recently, music festivals like California’s Coachella and England’s Glastonbury, and concert residencies in Las Vegas by the likes of Elton John, Lady Gaga and Adele, have attracted travelers to places they wouldn’t otherwise visit, Fish noted.

Travel and entertainment analysts have also spoken of a pent-up consumer demand for “experiences” over material objects since the coronavirus pandemic. Some think the willingness of music lovers to broaden their fandom horizons is part of the same mass cultural correction.

“It does seem like it’s more than a structural shift, maybe a personality transformation we all went through,” said Natalia Lechmanova, the chief Europe economist for the Mastercard Economics Institute.

As Swift hopscotches across Europe, Lechmanova expects restaurants and hotels to see the same boost that Mastercard observed within a 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) radius of concert venues in the U.S. cities she visited in 2023. The U.S. dollar’s strong value against the euro may also increase retail spending on apparel, memorabilia, beauty products and supplies for the friendship bracelets fans exchange as part of the Eras Tour experience, the economist said.

Former college roommates Lizzy Hale, 34, who lives in Los Angeles, and Mitch Goulding, 33, who lives in Austin, Texas, already had tickets to see the Eras Tour in L.A. last summer when they decided to try to get ones for Paris, London or Edinburgh, Scotland, too. They saw a Europe concert trip as a makeup for travel plans they had in May 2020 to celebrate Goulding’s birthday but had to cancel due to the pandemic.

Goulding managed to secure VIP tickets for one of Swift’s three Stockholm shows. He, Hale and two other friends scheduled a 10-day trip that also includes time in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

“As people who enjoy traveling and enjoy music, if you can find an opportunity to combine the two, it’s really special,” said Hale, who is pregnant with her first child.

FOR STOCKHOLM, 120,000 SWIFTIES CAN’T BE WRONG

The local economic impact of what the zeitgeist has termed “Swiftonomics” and the “Swift lift” can be considerable . It’s no wonder the exclusive arrangement Singapore’s government made with Swift to make the city-state her only tour stop in Southeast Asia earlier this year aroused regional jealousy .

No European governments have complained of their countries not being among the dozen selected for the Europe leg of the Eras Tour, although some fans have expressed surprise that Gelsenkirchen, a city with a population of about 264,000 is one of the three cities in Germany that made the cut.

Airbnb reported Tuesday that searches on its platform for the U.K. cities where Swift is performing in June and August — Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and London — increased an average of 337% when tickets went on sale last summer.

Not to be outdone when it comes to trend-spotting, the property rentals company cited the demand as an example of “passion tourism,” or travel “driven by concerts, sports and other cultural events.”

In Stockholm , 120,000 out-of-towners from 130 countries -- among them 10,000 from the U.S. — are expected to swarm Sweden’s capital this month, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Chief Economist Carl Bergqvist said. Stockholm is the only Scandinavian city on Swift’s tour, and airlines added extra flights from nearby Denmark, Finland and Norway to bring people to the May 17-19 shows, he said.

The city’s 40,000 hotel rooms are sold out even though prices skyrocketed for the tour dates, Bergqvist said. Concert visitors are expected to pump around 500 million Swedish kroner, or over $46 million, into the local economy over the course of their stays, an estimate that does not include what they paid for Swift tickets or to get to Sweden, he said.

“So this is going to be huge for the tourism sector in Sweden and Stockholm in particular,” Bergqvist said.

Nightclubs, restaurants and bars are seizing the opportunity to cater to fans with Taylor Swift-themed events, such as karaoke, quizzes and after-concert dance parties.

Houston resident Caroline Matlock, 29, saw Swift more than a year ago when the Eras Tour came to the Texas city. Now she’s making more friendship bracelets and trying to learn a few words of Swedish as she prepares to see the 3 1/2-hour show in Stockholm. The idea of seeing Swift in Europe was her friend’s, and Matlock needed some persuading at first.

“I was like, ‘I only want to go if it’s a country I haven’t been to. I’ve seen Taylor Swift,’” she said.

Visiting the Scandinavian cities of Oslo and Gothenburg is on their itinerary. The concert is the last night of the trip and Matlock looks forward to interacting with Swifties from other countries: “Americans tend to have a very obsessive culture, especially Taylor Swift-related, so I’m curious if the crowd will be more toned-down.”

WILL TOUR TOURISM ENDURE AFTER ERAS?

It remains to be seen if the music tourism trend has legs as long and strong as Swift’s and Beyoncé's, and if it will carry over to Billie Eilish, Usher and other artists with world tours scheduled next year. Expedia’s Fish thinks other big-name artists in Europe this summer will prove that booking a foreign trip around a concert is catching on.

Kat Morga, a travel consultant based in Nashville, isn’t so sure. Morga saw Swift perform in Nashville last year and helped two clients with school-aged children book European family vacations this summer that include seeing Swift in concert. But she thinks the difficulty of navigating ticket purchases through language barriers, currency conversions, international banking regulations and the risk of cancellations will limit the appeal of regular gig getaways.

“I think this is an anomaly,” Morga said. “People aren’t typically going to build their $20,000 huge family vacation only because Taylor Swift is there. She’s the one-off. She’s special.”

Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, whose company operates Booking.com, priceline.com, agoda.com, Kayak and OpenTable, is even less enthusiastic about concert tours as a tourism instigator. The Swift Effect causes a “little blip” when the superstar goes to smaller destinations, but for the worldwide travel industry, “one star touring around does not make a difference,” he said.

“It may just shift it a little bit. A person was going to go to the Caribbean for a week vacation. Instead that person (says), ‘Let’s travel to the Taylor Swift thing,’” Fogel said. “It doesn’t increase it. It just moves it from here to there.”

AP journalists Colleen Barry in Milan, Chisato Tanaka in Stockholm, Anne D’Innocenzio in New York, David Koenig in Dallas, Thomas Adamson in Paris and Brian Melley in London contributed reporting.
