Excursion Overview

The perfect way to get out on the water in juneau.

The Native Alaskans that built their lives on the shores of Juneau depended on the coastal waterways and wetlands of the Mendenhall Valley. This Juneau kayak tour allows you to learn the history of the area and surround yourself with spectacular views as old as time. Your journey begins as you drive through downtown Juneau, over the bridge, and out to Douglas Island. From the North end of the island, you will see incredible views of the Mendenhall Glacier, mountain ranges, and maybe catch a glimpse of the massive 1,500 square mile ice field if it's a clear day. Make sure to have your camera ready, because everywhere you turn is a scene you will want to capture! After you've had a chance to look around and take in your surroundings, an experienced guide will outfit you with gear for the day. No experience is required for this excursion as you will learn the essential techniques of kayaking before you hit the water. Your guide will make sure you are safe and having fun throughout the entire trip. Each kayak seats two people so you can go with a friend or be paired with someone else on the tour for your epic ocean adventure! As you paddle along, you will hear about the history of local Native and Russian fur trading, where you will get a feel for the life they once lived on these shores. You will quietly glide along, stealthily able to approach any wildlife in the area. In the ocean, you may spot harbor seals, sea lions, porpoise, and perhaps even a whale! From this distance, 6 miles from the Mendenhall Glacier, you will be able to see the true size of this river of ice as it carves its way through the mountain peaks. As your kayak excursion comes to an end, you will return back to shore. The best way to end a day like this is to enjoy a nice Alaskan snack, chat about the memories you've made, and reminisce about the sights you saw. This Juneau kayak tour gives you the chance to experience the Alaskan ocean with a bit of physical fitness. Relax a bit and take in the view once more before heading back to town via bus.

Our unforgettable experience of glacier kayaking in Valdez , coupled with a glacier hike, comes highly recommended. One of our best activities in Homer was sea kayaking, offering up-close views of the local marine life. And let’s not forget kayaking in Seward, where the icy fjords provide a stunning backdrop. We also had a great time on a kayak trip in Sitka , where sea lions accompanied us.

Agnes in kayak in a blue life jacket observes a sea lion lounging on a green navigation buoy marked with the number 7, set against a serene Alaskan backdrop with misty mountains and calm waters during a sea kayaking trip in Alaska, in Sitka.

Our adventures also include kayaking in Sitka during an Alaska scenic cruise via the Inside Passage route , where we were greeted by playful sea lions. Inside Passage is also perfect for paddling with whales, especially from Juneau and Icy Strait Point.

On a recent road trip along the Dalton Highway , we had the unique opportunity to kayak in the Gates of the Arctic National Park , the most remote national park in the U.S.

Additionally, our treks on Root Glacier from McCarthy , close to the Kennecott Copper Mine in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park has further amplified our enthusiasm for such journeys.

Kayaking offers an immersive experience of Alaska. Whether paddling a peaceful mountain lake or a glacial fjord, visitors can be assured of an experience like no other. All tours feature an experienced naturalist guide who will assist you with gear, technique, and information about the area you visit. No experience is necessary for most trips.

The community of Seward is a popular place to kayak thanks to an abundance of sheltered coves and bays, many with massive glaciers standing tall at the far end. For those new to paddling, or with a tight schedule, the Resurrection Bay Kayak Tour is the perfect option. Explore the Caines Head State Recreation Area, keeping an eye out for seals, whales, and sea otters along the way.

For a longer paddle, the Northwestern Fjord-Aialik Bay Day Trip is a full-day experience inside beautiful Kenai Fjords National Park . The trip is limited to 12 people and is the perfect adventure for those wanting an intimate view of the wild coastlines of Alaska.

Slightly shorter in duration, a Bear Glacier Iceberg Kayak tour takes guests on a five-hour trip of the glacier's protected lagoon. Feel the cold katabatic winds as you paddle among icebergs calved from the face of the glacier. Closer to Seward, a Fox Island Kayak tour sticks to coves closer to civilization and includes a salmon and prime rib lunch.

Farther down the Kenai Peninsula in Homer , many local businesses offer excellent kayaking that include a water taxi ride across to Kachemak Bay.

For travelers looking to explore freshwater environments, the Denali State Park Kayak Trip departs from McKinley Princess Lodge for a few hours of paddling the quiet waters of scenic Byers Lake. There are also several exciting, scenic raft tours if you're especially interested in experiencing Alaska by river.

For all Alaska kayak trips, remember to dress in layers, with extras in case you get wet. Also plan on warm layers and wool socks for kayak trips in glaciated waters. Bring water, a camera, and a hat.

Super fun time, learned a ton with Tyler. Would definitely recommend him as a guide and this trip.

Great trip until the end and the f-ing bus LEFT 4 of us. Fortunately another company is driving us back to town. Really piss poor safety. I am beyond pissed. There were 34 people on board and they left without 4 people, one of whom is missing a leg. I'm a native of Alaska and a long time rafter and I have never heard of such incompetence. They made sure that all 34 people signed the legal waiver; could they not count to see 34 people got back on the bus? Heavy bear area, the bus left before 5:00 and had another company not let us on their bus we would have been stranded. I'm waiting to hear from the company. Still waiting

Isaac in the shorts was amazing! He navigated the raft well... ensuring that everyone got wet! The views were amazing! The glacier, the mountain, bald eagles, and green lush trees take your breath away. I also appreciated that the tour folks provided rain gear and boots! Saved us a lot of hassle.

My partner and I took this excursion when we were in Juneau on a Regent cruise, Saturday, May 4th. We had a good experience. We were very happy with the work of Anna, our guide. We had a great time on the water, saw a whole bunch of seals that were playing around us in many different positions and a beautiful display of flocks of birds playing with the reflection of light in the afternoon sun. But above all she was very supportive of us two old guys who were the least powerful rowers in our group. She remained cheerful and encouraging even after all the other boats had reached shore. Good job. I also want to give a shout out to Alice (( think that's her name) the bus driver who brought us from and to the port. Her driving was smooth and safe throughout and he she had lots of nice anecdotes that made the ride interesting. Some guides talk too much, but she was just right.

Our Float Raft tour with Jason was probably the best part of our vacation. Jason was extremely fun and educational. He made us feel more than comfortable and safe going down the rapids. He even pulled in a small piece of iceberg (about 2 feet wide) so we could all get pics with it.  On land Jason was assisted by his team members Alysa and Larson who got us all dressed and geared up for the tour. Great job guys for making a true Alaskan experience for us. Loved it! https://www.alaskatraveladventures.com/

We booked a "Best of Juneau" excursion on the recommendation of our travel agency, Vacations To Go, and we were SO impressed. We were with the same group at the glacier (for about an hour) and then dropped off to go on the whale watching part of the excursion, where we were split into two boats. While we were heading up to the glacier and then down to the boat, our knowledgeable guide had tons of awesome facts about the area, and his jokes were well-timed and hard not to chuckle at. Our guide for the whale watching was newer, but she had incredible enthusiasm, had done a lot of research, and was paired with a captain who was very experienced. We went in mid-May, so we saw about 6 humpbacks, many seals, and many eagles. The weather was exceptional, so I don't have feedback on what it's like when weather is less than stellar, but the boat is covered in the middle and there's a platform on the back for clear views to the whales. If you have a DSLR camera (or want to rent one for the trip), this is your time to use it. Shots on cell phones will not do these massive animals justice! I used my DSLR to view the whales, and my partner was happy with binoculars. The salmon bake was very delicious, and the ambiance was lovely. We highly recommend a quick 2-minute walk up to see the waterfall before heading back to your ship. It's a wonderful little area. The entire day, we were reminded of where to go next and about how long things would take, so we never felt in danger of missing our all-aboard time. When you're dropped off at the salmon back, your ride back to town is a shuttle system with several buses, so you likely won't have to wait more than 5 minutes before heading back, but it is on you to keep track of your specific time. We would've had to spend several hours eating to be in danger of missing our all-aboard time, so the average person will probably not find this difficult to manage. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we'd highly recommend this to anyone visiting Juneau for the first time. It was excellent and worth every penny!

Jason was our tour guide for our raft trip. He made me feel ok with not paddling along with the rest of the passengers. Got to sit in the front and Jason guided us down the river and skillfully through all the various sections of rapids and challenges. It was a great time for my first experience. You are given waders, boots, and a life jacket to wear but my shirt and the bottom of my pants still got wet. Be prepared. Water is cold but very refreshing. Snacks afterwards too. Highly recommend!!!
