Chasing Camerons: Cameron Young, Cam Davis look to hunt leaders Sunday at Rocket Mortgage Classic

Change Text Size

Detroit Golf Club is the kind of track that oozes old-school cool and if you’ve got a solid strategy to navigate the Donald Ross beauty, then, well, you should be off to the races.

For Cam Davis and Cameron Young, leaning on some strong experience at the host venue of the Rocket Mortgage Classic has meant that through 54 holes they’ve firmly put themselves in the mix once again.

Davis shot a 6-under 66 Saturday while Young shot a 5-under 67 Saturday. The duo trail Akshay Bhatia and Aaron Rai by just one heading into Sunday’s finale.

Davis won this championship in 2021 while Young finished runner-up in 2022.

Davis, who hasn’t notched a top-10 finish on the PGA TOUR yet this season, got off to a blistering start, birdieng three of his first four holes. He added circles on the par-3 15th and the par-4 finisher to get into the house with a bogey-free 66.

Cam Davis cards back-to-back birdies on No. 2 at Rocket Mortgage

The Australian said the closing birdie on No. 18 meant there would be some “extra good vibes” heading into the finale, as he looks for his second win on TOUR.

“For as much time I spent this morning doing nothing, I got things going pretty quickly at the beginning of the round, which kind of really settled me down,” Davis said with a smile. “I played a lot of really solid golf. I think everyone's going to find it difficult to make putts out there at the moment. I made a couple early, which was nice to kind of not feel like I had to really push hard.”

Young bogeyed the par-5 fourth but rallied with three birdies in his final five holes to hold his spot on the leaderboard from Friday into Saturday. Young has five top-10s on the season including a tie for ninth at the Travelers Championship last week.

He said he was most impressed with his run of pars on Nos. 10-12 kept his round going.

“I could have very easily gone back to even right there and made a few really nice strokes in a row ... so I was proud of the way I did that,” Young said. “Then to know there’s some scoring holes ahead of me, I took advantage of a couple of them coming in.”

Young is 10th on the PGA TOUR in Total Driving this season and his solid effort off the tee has continued this week in Detroit, as he sits fifth in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee. He said his gameplan for Sunday is simple, since he’ll need to come from behind to win for the first time on TOUR, he’s just aiming to shoot another low score.

“I feel like I've been playing well and I'm just excited to have a chance to win,” Young said. “I haven't had that many this year, so I feel like my game's in a good spot and mentally I’m in a really nice place, so I’m just excited to come out and play.”

There have been two playoffs in the last three years at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and we’re set for another tight finish in Detroit Sunday.

“I turned in a really good scorecard,” said Davis, the 2021 winner who emerged victorious from a three-man playoff. “I'm very happy with my work today and looking forward to tomorrow.”

Miles Russell, age 15, made his PGA Tour debut. It was oddly normal

DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 27: Amateur Miles Russell of the United States watches his shot from the 14th tee during the first round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club on June 27, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Raj Mehta/Getty Images)

DETROIT — Miles Russell’s pants don’t fit. He didn’t mean to show off his ankles during Thursday’s first round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. It’s just, the inseam he was measured for recently no longer applies. He hit a growth spurt soon after and now measures 5-foot-7, but stuck with pants meant for a wee 5-6. His waist, meanwhile, remains near-nonexistent. At 120 pounds, he wears a 28-inch waistline “with a scrunched belt.”

So there was Russell on Thursday, walking around Detroit Golf Club, flashing those ankles with each step.

Such is the life of a 15-year-old.

Russell made his PGA Tour debut at the Rocket Mortgage, shooting a 2-over 74. Born in 2009, he signed autographs for 7-year-olds, 10-year-olds, 15-year-olds and some adults. He took every swing with a PGA Tour Live cameras a few feet behind him. He held a press conference the day before his first round and afterward. He played from tees measuring 7,370 yards. He played in a field with 10 of the top 50-ranked players in the world.

And the strangest thing about it all?

It felt oddly normal.

This year has already seen two 16-year-olds make the cut on the PGA Tour — Kris Kim at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and Blades Brown at the Myrtle Beach Classic. Last year, 15-year-old Oliver Betschart survived a 54-hole qualifier to play in the Bermuda Championship, becoming the youngest player to play in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event in almost a decade. He was three months younger than Russell is now.

First birdie on TOUR for 15-year-old Miles Russell 🤩 pic.twitter.com/5tLfnf5HuW — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 27, 2024

Now it’s Russell at the Rocket Mortgage. In April, he played in the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, shooting rounds of 68 and 66 to become the youngest player to make the cut in the developmental tour’s history. Headlines followed. Then Russell followed with rounds of 70 and 66 to finish T20. The winner, Tim Widing, was 11 years older than him.

Tournament organizers from the Rocket Mortgage took notice and contacted Russell following his performance at the Suncoast Classic, hoping to capitalize on the story. Because that’s what a tournament like the Rocket desperately needs — attention, however it can get it. Big names are scarce in Detroit, so compelling storylines are required. The Nos. 2, 4 and 5 ranked amateurs in the world — Jackson Koivun, Benjamin James and Luke Clanton — are all in this year’s field. Clanton is making his PGA Tour debut, as is Neal Shipley, the low amateur at the Masters and U.S. Open who recently turned pro. As Shipley walked off the course on Thursday, he was told next week’s John Deere Classic, another non-elevated PGA Tour event, has a spot for him.

Those names are all at least in or out of college, though.

Russell just finished his freshman year of high school, even though he doesn’t attend a physical school. The Jacksonville Beach, Fla., native began playing at 2 years old, broke par at 6, and has been on a prodigious path ever since. He is home-schooled and already operating as a small business. He has an agent and holds Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals with TaylorMade and Nike.

Because 15 sounds so jarring, there’s the tendency for some to see Russell as a novelty.

In reality, this is all less and less uncommon.

Russell did not come to Detroit like some kid looking to high-five his heroes.

Rico Hoey, one of Russell’s playing partners on Thursday, was on the practice green after their round and still in a bit of disbelief. Now 28, he was trying to break 80 at Russell’s age. Coming into the first round, he assumed he and Pierceson Coody, a 24-year-old PGA Tour rookie with three Korn Ferry wins to his name, would need to keep things light and easy for the young star. Then they met him.

“As a 15-year-old, I’m sure I’d be pretty nervous out here, so we tried to make it easy on him, and make him feel comfortable, but, really, I don’t even know how much he needed that,” Hoey said. “He was cool. His short game is really good. He has a lot of length for his size. His game is just really good and he’s really calm.”

old school vibes tour

Some will always be inherently uncomfortable with young mega-watt talent being expedited to play among pros in any sport. But that’s never stopped it from happening. And golf appears to be revving more and more, and going younger and younger. It’s reasonable to expect someone soon emerging to surpass Michelle Wie West as the youngest player to ever tee it up in a PGA Tour event. She was 14 years, three months and seven days old when she played in the 2004 Sony Open.

What’s most eye-opening isn’t the ages, but how narrow the gap is between the kids and the pros. Russell is not some beefed-up bomber. He is instead elastic and has crafted a swing with his coach, former Korn Ferry player Ramon Bascansa, that generates enough clubhead speed to hang with the pros. He averaged 292 yards off the tee on Thursday, tied for 78th in the 156-man field.

But that doesn’t mean everything surrounding him isn’t still misfitting. He is technically not old enough to use Detroit Golf Club’s men’s locker room, though exceptions are made this week. He is not able to drive, let alone rent a car or check into a hotel alone. One group behind Russell’s, 36-year-old Rafael Campos played his round while ripping a few cigarettes — a vice that Russell can’t legally buy for another three years.

Afterward, Russell played along with questions about the experience, but was really only concerned with the golf. He talked about unforced errors and missing some makable puts. He said he learned watching Coody and Hoey how tour pros manage to “grind it out and shoot a couple under.” He said, sure, he was nervous to start the round. How much out of 10? “I’d probably give it a seven.” But sort of shrugged off the idea of being intimidated.

Russell’s voice was soft and he was obviously still a little peeved. A missed 3-footer on the final hole left him with a closing bogey.

“We live, we learn, we move on,” he said, sounding like someone who is not only used to playing on tour, but damn near expects to.

Maybe, for better or worse, that’s not so crazy anymore.

Flamingo Las Vegas Review – Renovated Flamingo Room

As many of you know I have been documenting Las Vegas’ reopening since June 4 when the doors of the many casinos swung back open following a three month closure due to COVID-19. From my initial stay at Caesars Pa lace on opening night through my many Strip walking & construction tours and my stay at Paris Las Vegas I have been filming videos and sharing what Vegas is like right now.

Staying at the Historic Flamingo

Recently I stayed right on the Center Strip at perhaps the most historic of the Las Vegas megaresorts Flamingo. With my Caesars Diamond status from Founderscard I was able to secure a newly renovated Flamingo Room for $20 for the night with no resort fee. What I found was a surprisingly nice hotel room product.

Flamingo Las Vegas Review – Bottom Line

The brand new renovated Flamingo rooms at Flamingo Las Vegas are surprisingly nice. While the resort is hectic, it features a Prime location and rooms are often a great value. You can do far worse on the Strip and staying at Flamingo allows you to enjoy the history of the spot and even a few pockets of quiet and solace among the Strip crowds.

Have you stayed at Flamingo? How was your experience?

In the video you said the Diamond Lounge area was taken over by the new restaurant. So, is there now no Diamond Lounge? Oh well – you can just hit the Bird Bar.

Yup no Diamond/Laurel lounge at the Flamingo any more. As of now they list only 5 left. Caesars Palace, Harrah’s, Rio, Paris & Planet Hollywood. Of course they are all closed right now and Rio & PH are completely closed.

2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic scores, takeaways: Akshay Bhatia, Aaron Rai share lead after Round 2

Bhatia, the 18-hole leader, was joined by rai late on friday as the two top a crowded leaderboard in detroit.

akshay-bhatia-round-2-rocket-mortgage-g.jpg

Akshay Bhatia heads into the weekend for the second straight tournament with a great chance to win. After contending last week at the Travelers Championship, the wiry left hander is at again at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Backing up his opening 8-under 64 with a 67 on Friday, Bhatia stands at 13 under alongside Englishman Aaron Rai, who utilized two late birdies to join Bhatia at the top.

"For me, I feel like when you know you're playing well, then you feel like you can hit all the golf shots that you need to hit to make a good golf score," Bhatia said. "I think difference in situations, maybe it's a little harder, but out here you can easily make five, six, seven birdies."

After his Round 1 performance that included six birdies and an eagle, Bhatia added five more circles to his scorecard in Round 2 while remaining bogey-free. Bhatia has blistered Detroit Golf Club thanks to his ball striking, and it will need to continue into the weekend given the number of names that lurk and plenty of birdies still to be had.

Not only will he have Rai to contend with but also a pair of Rookies of the Year in Cameron Young and Eric Cole. Young parlayed his scorching weekend in Cromwell, Connecticut, that included a 59 at TPC River Highlands, into more birdie making this week while Cole has rediscovered form that had abandoned him for much of the year.

The same can be said for 2021 tournament champion Cam Davis, who sits a few back at 10 under. Without much to speak of this season, the talented Australian seeks his second PGA Tour title at the site of his first. Erik van Rooyen, Joel Dahmen, Jake Knapp and Min Woo Lee also find themselves in the mix heading into the weekend in the Motor City.

The leaders

T1. Akshay Bhatia, Aaron Rai (-13)

Bhatia actually hit the ball better on Friday than Thursday, but the score was not indicative of this. Not holing as many putts and failing to capitalize on three of the four par 5s, Bhatia left some out there but remains in a fantastic spot to pick up his third PGA Tour victory.

No. 3 nearly came last weekend as Bhatia was featured alongside world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler for both the third and fourth rounds of the Travelers Championship. While he ultimately settled for a T5 finish, Bhatia got a front row seat to the current standard in professional golf.

"It's cool to see what it's like," Bhatia said of playing with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler last weekend. "He's obviously playing on a different level than many of us out here. Yeah, I mean, he just kind of plots around and doesn't make many mistakes and doesn't let anything get to him. That's why he's the No. 1 player in the world; he holds himself to that standard."

Other contenders

T3. Taylor Montgomery, Troy Merritt, Erik van Rooyen, Cameron Young (-11) T7. Eric Cole, Cam Davis, Joel Dahmen (-10) T10. Jake Knapp, Neal Shipley, Wesley Bryan, Sam Stevens, Joe Highsmith (-9)

It's a bit of an odd bunch, some without much form but others with plenty, but Davis' inclusion in the chasing pack through two rounds is notable. A winner here a few years ago, the smooth-swinging Australian has fallen on hard times in regard to his game. Without a top-35 finish since the Masters in early April, Davis has channeled the good vibes of 2021 and the subsequent top-20 finishes at Detroit GC into more of the same this week.

"I do practice rounds, I still go around and think, 'Oh, this is where I hit a great shot and this is where I won it and this is where I holed something,'" Davis said. "Once the tournament starts, it's so different, yeah, you don't really start thinking about that unless someone points it out to you. No, I've done my appreciation back early in the week and it's get back to business and, yeah, try and enjoy the journey again."

Bhatia's disappearing act

One of the most bizarre instances of a lost ball on the PGA Tour occurred Friday morning when Bhatia's tee shot on the par-5 17th split the fairway. Tumbling down the short grass, Bhatia's golf ball disappeared as it took a trip down a drain in the middle of the fairway. Able to identify his Callaway through the drainage holes, Bhatia was awarded free relief and went about his business like nothing had happened.

"Oh, yeah, that was wild," Bhatia said. "No, never seen it. Rules official's never seen it, so it was kind of one in a million chance that ball goes in that small hole in that drain, so it was pretty funny."

You don't see this everyday 😂 @AkshayBhatia_1 's ball went missing in a drain @RocketClassic ! pic.twitter.com/vZlzuABJvy — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 28, 2024

Miles Russell misses the cut

The 15-year-old nearly punched his name onto the weekend tee sheet but came up just short. After opening with a 74, Russell was fired out of a cannon Friday morning carding four birdies in his first 11 holes to get to 2 under for the tournament. Needing to play his final seven holes in 2 under, Russell instead tacked on two bogeys to finish his tournament at a very respectable even par.

An impressive PGA TOUR debut for Miles Russell 👏 The 15-year-old amateur shoots 74-70 to finish even par @RocketClassic . pic.twitter.com/ohA4tughXj — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 28, 2024

2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic update odds, picks

  • Akshay Bhatia: 5/2
  • Aaron Rai: 4-1
  • Cameron Young: 9/2
  • Erik van Rooyen: 12-1
  • Cam Davis: 18-1
  • Taylor Montgomery: 22-1
  • Troy Merritt: 22-1
  • Eric Cole: 28-1

I love the way Bhatia looks, and while just north of 2-1 is steep to pay at this point, it may be the correct play at this juncture. In lieu of Bhatia, Knapp could be a factor from 45-1 after a stellar second round that saw him gain just about +4.50 strokes on approach. If there is someone who could go nuclear on Moving Day and fire something in the low 60s to get back into the tournament, Davis Thompson is my favorite outsider selection from six back at 100-1.

It is in Star City of Moscow Oblast, a name which may refer to the facility itself or to its grounds. (Read more about Yury Gagarin Cosmonauts training center )

The secret Star City was built to train Soviet cosmonauts, including Yuri Gagarin, the 1st man in space. Many other famous Russian cosmonauts trained here with Gagarin: German Titov, Valentina Tereshkova, the first female cosmonaut, and Alexei Leonov, the first cosmonaut to exit the spaceship into space . The best facilities were built for them: the world’s largest centrifuge and hydro laboratory. Many cosmonauts from other countries (USA, Japan, Germany and many others) also have trained here together with Soviet Russian cosmonauts. On this Star (Space) City Tour you will see:

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

old school vibes tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

old school vibes tour

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

old school vibes tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

old school vibes tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

old school vibes tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

old school vibes tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

old school vibes tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
