NuWest Travel Nursing Agency Review 2023

  • Brandon Little
  • Last Updated: April 18, 2023

Located just outside of Seattle, NuWest travel nursing agency has been serving clients for over 25 years.

They peg themselves as a boutique agency, but they were on the forefront of servicing staffing shortages in hospitals during the COVID-19 outbreak.

They were also instrumental in sending travel nurses to Montana, Guam, Florida, and other hot spots that needed assistance.

NuWest Healthcare is led by CEO Mona Veiseh and has a terrific leadership team. The team has focused on rapid but sustainable deployment of healthcare resources, earning them a solid reputation in the healthcare industry.

This is especially true in the travel nursing space. NuWest prides itself on working with travel nurses to ensure each assignment is what you expect, want, and need.

They offer all of the solid perks out there, including bonuses and housing. However, the real value lies in the clear communication and relationship between travel nurses and recruiters.

Table of Contents

Nuwest travel nursing agency reviews, benefits of working with nuwest, drawbacks of working with nuwest, how to become a travel nurse with nuwest, why choose travel nursing with nuwest.

The overwhelming response from nurses who’ve had travel nursing assignments with NuWest have been positive.

The big thing that differentiates NuWest travel nursing agency from other agencies is the speed in which they can get you on an assignment.

Reema Muhammed, who completed an assignment with NuWest, had this to say:

“NuWest is extremely easy, and fast to work with. They contacted me about an assignment and I received a contract that day! “ -Reema Muhammed

Other RN’s who completed travel nursing assignments with NuWest were overall positive about their experience as well.

“This is definitely a company you want to be on board with. They offer great pay and there is no run-around that you may get at other agencies. I really enjoyed my assignment with NuWest” -Jackie Crowe
“I would 10 out of 10 recommend NuWest travel nursing. I had a great assignment and the communication was as good as it gets”  document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", function(event) {ESY.Widget({category_id: '231',title: 'Search Nursing Programs Enrolling Now',widget_layout: 'horizontal',domain_id: 'betternurse.org',widget_id: '',custom_options: '',intro: '',type: 'search'});}); -Alicia Chretien
“From the start of the sign up process, my recruiter Jack has been there to answer any questions I have. The professionalism and respect from NuWest is unparalleled compared to other travel agencies I’ve worked with prior. I’m about to start my new assignment and am still treated with the same level of helpfulness and respect I’ve been given since day one! You guys might have a lifer here!”  -Thomas Roy

Pros and Cons of NuWest Travel Nursing Agency

Every travel nursing agency will have its benefits and drawbacks, and NuWest is no different.

Here’s a look at the advantages and disadvantages of travel nursing with NuWest.

  • 401k offered
  • Reimbursements for relocation, licensing and compliance
  • Small personal feel
  • Competitive pay
  • Fast turnaround time, deploying nurses within 72 hours
  • Smaller list of available locations (FL, MT and CA)
  • Smaller list of available jobs than other larger agencies
  • NuWest may not be a fit if you’re not ready to work immediately

While NuWest has a lot going in it’s favor for an agency, there are some drawbacks any nurse considering taking an assignment should be aware of.

For exmaple, they have limited location availability. While they are working on further locations, as of now they’re focused on Florida, Montana and California.

If you’re looking for any other location, then NuWest may not be the best fit.

Also, NuWest travel nursing agency is a rapid deployment agency. This means if you’re not ready to go in the next 48 to 72 hours, then you may want to look elsewhere.

In order to travel with NuWest you will need to have a few things lined up and ready to go.

Below is a list of what you need in order to start your travel nursing journey:

  • Active Nursing license (RN)
  • Updated Resume
  • A valid drivers license
  • Up to date immunization record
  • Ready for your assignment within 72 hours

It’s easy to see why so many nurses are choosing to travel with NuWest.

They have incredible reviews, competitive pay, and a reputation for recruiters who go above and beyond to communicate about assignments.

While they are a bit restricted on the locations they offer, who wouldn’t want to spend time in beautiful Montana, sunny Florida or laid back California?

If you’re ready to start your travel nursing journey, then start traveling today !

Always Nuwest, they leader in staffing industry.

First contact agency I worked with. I would recommend them

I highly recommend NuWest! So friendly and efficient!

I had the best experience working for Nuwest and with my recruiter Ashleigh byers. I would recommend the company and my recruiter.

Love working for NuWest

NuWest is only my second agency and second travel assignment that I’ve taken thus far, but I must say… It will be hard moving forward with any other company after my assignment that I’m currently on. NuWest has truly set the bar so high, but I love it! No issues from beginning to end and my recruiter, Jack Pardue is AMAZING! I highly recommend and I don’t ever recommend anything, so this says a LOT lol.

NuWest was the first agency that I’ve worked with. I won’t search around for anything else. They are amazing!

McKenzie had to deal with me lol😂😉give her a raise #drama queen

This was my first travel assignment and they made it so easy for me to onboard. They changed my life. Forever grateful.

Selection of assignments is never in short supply, staff is nice. Recruiter is very difficult to get ahold of and does not respond very timely. Overall great company to work for.

I had a great team members who assisted me on every part of the assignments. Dan, Megan and Brianna were prompt in their responses. Felt excellent support throughout the contract.

Great agency to work for. Will continue to work with them in the future. Any issues that arise they are quick and accountable and take immediate action to correct. Always available and always respond.

NuWest has been a great experience in my travel career. My recruiter is good at communicating with me. They are quick to complete assignment onboarding processing and make the transition to a new place swift and easiy.

This company is amazing. Annie Schlachter is the best recruiter you could ever ask for. She is available all the time, super chill, and so honest! I cannot wait to work with them again.

Canucks' Thatcher Demko is runner-up for the 2024 Vezina Trophy

Thatcher Demko had an outstanding season for the Vancouver Canucks, even if it was partially derailed by injuries.

Demko had a career-high .918 save percentage and backstopped the Canucks to first place in the Pacific Division. It's fitting that he was recognized as one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL with a nomination for the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender.

He came short of winning the award, however. To no one's surprise, Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck ran away with the 2024 Vezina with his outstanding .921 save percentage across 60 games.

The league's general managers vote on the award and Hellebuyck earned 31 out of 32 first-place votes, with just one general manager giving the first-place nod to Sergei Bobrovsky, who finished third overall in the voting.

2024-vezina-voting

Demko came second in award voting, finding a place on 30 out of 32 ballots, with 20 second-place votes. Hopefully, that's a precursor to winning the award in a future season.

Demko is the first Canuck to be nominated for the Vezina since Roberto Luongo in 2011. He matches the highest finish in voting by a Canuck. Luongo finished second in Vezina voting in 2007, as did Kirk McLean in 1992.

Transportation | DIA’s new West Security Checkpoint is saving travelers time, officials say. But busy days are coming.

Upgraded technology, more lanes speed up much-maligned security waits at world’s sixth busiest airport.

The state-of-the-art screening area opened in the northwest corner of the airport’s Level 6 in early February , replacing the smaller, dated North Security Checkpoint on the floor below it.

Asked for his review after passing through one of the checkpoint’s 17 tech-laden screening lanes, the 74-year-old Coolidge took a neutral position.

“I don’t know if it’s better or not,” said Coolidge, a TSA PreCheck customer. “It doesn’t seem that much faster.”

A few lanes over, Lakewood resident Biz Schaugaard — who also has PreCheck — raved about her breezy security experience: “Actually, it was awesome. We just zipped through no problem at all.”

Transportation Security Administration and airport officials know that passenger viewpoints will vary — especially at DIA, the sixth busiest airport in the world when accounting for people hopping on connecting flights. But after more than four months of operations, early data suggests the West Security Checkpoint is delivering on its promise of speeding things up for travelers making their way to their flights.

Since it opened, officials have seen a roughly 30% decrease in average passenger wait times at the airport’s main South Security Checkpoint compared to the same period last year. That’s a drop from 15½ minutes to 10½,  DIA spokeswoman Courtney Law said.

Wait times at the small checkpoint on the bridge that connects the terminal with Concourse A have fallen by more than 50%, from roughly 10 minutes to under five minutes. Those decreases come despite a 5% increase in passenger traffic over the same period, Law said.

The average wait time at the west checkpoint so far is also just under five minutes, Law said.

According to TSA data, the new west checkpoint handled 45.5% of the more than 3.9 million passengers who passed through security at DIA in April and May. The now-removed north checkpoint typically handled about 35% of the airport’s departing passengers, according to Law.

“It was an important milestone for many reasons,” Law said of the shimmering row of scanners and conveyor belts. “It added really necessary additional capacity to our security checkpoints. We went from 36 lanes to 44 lanes.”

The checkpoint’s opening comes six years into DIA’s $2.1 billion terminal renovation project . Relocating security checkpoints to the building’s top floor was always one of the project’s primary objectives. But the work has been impeded by significant delays , including the city’s messy divorce with the original contractor on the project and multiple changes in its planned scope.

Now that the west checkpoint is finally humming along, the former north checkpoint has been removed to make way for the next phase of the project. That involves construction crews expanding the floor area of the northeast corner of Level 6 to make room for the future East Security Checkpoint.

After that screening area is completed and open — something Law says is on track to happen before the end of 2025 — the South Security Checkpoint and Bridge Checkpoint will also be removed, leaving just the two new checkpoints on the top floor.

New tech and some familiar challenges

DIA’s improved efficiency doesn’t just come from having more lanes. Those often don’t all operate at the same time anyway as TSA balances passenger needs with employee breaks and training, officials said.

The technology at the new screening area plays a part.

Each lane of the west checkpoint features bag scanners with 3D imaging capabilities. Those allow passengers to leave their laptops and toiletries in their carry-on bags. Each lane has an automatic conveyor belt with room for three passengers to put their items in bins at a time. Updated body scanners also smooth out the process and boost efficiency, officials said.

“I can tell you that having an entire checkpoint with all that uniform equipment is great for standardization,” TSA spokeswoman Lorie Dankers said in an interview. “That’s not true even at the South Security Checkpoint. Different lanes may have different scanners for bags and you may get different instructions from agents.”

It’s a generalization, Dankers admitted, but she likes to think of the west checkpoint as a “niche” security area with more lanes dedicated to serving people with PreCheck and Clear, or who have accessibility and functional needs, and other special designations like active duty members of the military or badged employees.

“If you’re in one of these special categories that is where you would go,” Dankers said.

The west checkpoint does have lanes for passengers going through standard screening protocols and the south checkpoint has lanes for PreCheck and Clear customers, so most travelers have options.

Two specific groups, Clear members who also have PreCheck and travelers who made an appointment through the airport’s free DEN Reserve program , must go through the west checkpoint. Designated lines for those passengers start at the checkpoint entrances near Door 600 and Door 606 on the west side of the terminal building.

The rollout of the new screening area hasn’t been without hiccups.

On a Saturday in February, just a few weeks after the checkpoint opened, passengers reported running into some of the long waits and headaches that have dogged DIA in recent years. Those headaches were exacerbated by the airport’s website providing inaccurate wait-time projections, suggesting passengers might only have to stand in line for a few minutes to pass through PreCheck lanes at the airport’s main south checkpoint when actual waits were much longer.

The west checkpoint is also less visible than the south and former north checkpoints on the main floor of the airport’s Great Hall.

Passengers coming in from the west parking areas and drop-off lanes need to walk past the United Airlines check-in counters and turn left to find the entrance to the checkpoint’s standard screening lanes. The location adds another wrinkle to navigating the terminal building that remains checkered with temporary construction walls as the renovation project trudges forward.

“It’s been a little confusing,” said Maria Vecchione, a Boston resident who went through the new checkpoint last month with her husband and infant son. “The way things are marked is just a little bit unclear. West, east, up, down — I had to ask a few times. Usually, I know how to navigate airports pretty well.”

DIA’s busiest days are to come

The added capacity and efficiency the checkpoint has brought to DIA were helpful over a busier-than-ever Memorial Day weekend .

Between Friday, May 24 and Tuesday, May 28, TSA agents screened 372,701 travelers at DIA, Dankers said. That was an 8% increase over the 344,327 people the agency screened at the airport over the five-day Memorial Day travel period in 2023.

Perhaps more illustrative of growing passenger demand, that total was almost 7% higher than the 348,696 passengers who went through DIA security over Memorial Day weekend in 2019 before the pandemic upended growth trends, according to data Dankers provided.

The TSA is joining major airlines in projecting that this summer will be the busiest period of air travel on record.

On May 24, the agency counted 2,951,859 people who passed through security checkpoints nationwide, breaking a record set last Nov. 26, the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

The single business day in DIA history was July 16 last year, when 88,683 passengers passed through checkpoints, Dankers said.

The coming Fourth of July travel period is expected to be the next big test of DIA’s efficiency. And more tests loom. The airport is projected to serve more than 100 million passengers a year by 2030.

Dankers defers to standard advice when it comes to air travel: arrive early, be prepared and expect the unexpected.

The West Security Checkpoint may be designed to be faster, but, ultimately, she said, “It’s as fast as people are.”

New Jersey just opened an office in... San Francisco? Here's what's going on

A new center run by the nonprofit group Choose New Jersey will pitch the Garden State to California businesses — specifically film and television in Hollywood and artificial intelligence, or AI, in the Silicon Valley region.

The center will be the fifth office run by Choose New Jersey, which is financed by several of the state’s largest companies and utilities and pays for the several economic outreach efforts by the state. It's stated mission is to attract business to New Jersey, and it has paid for Gov. Phil Murphy to travel on economic trade missions.

The new center will officially open on July 15 in San Francisco, typically considered the heart of Silicon Valley, a long-established high-tech center.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Story continues below photo gallery

“The West Coast has long been considered the home of the tech and film industries, but a whole new world of opportunity is emerging right here in the Garden State,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in the Wednesday announcement.

Murphy and his entourage previously toured the West Coast this spring in a bid to pitch New Jersey to businesses in Hollywood and Silicon Valley.

The center will be staffed solely by Choose New Jersey’s chief strategy officer, Tim Crouch, a former executive at the United Kingdom’s foreign trade office, who worked primarily in North America.

According to the announcement, Crouch “will make frequent visits to Southern California and the Pacific Northwest, meeting with some of the world’s most innovative companies as they expand beyond their home markets in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.”

“As they are looking to tap into new markets, new ideas, and new talent, my job is to make sure they know about the amazing things happening” in New Jersey, Crouch said.

What will the Choose NJ center do?

Ingrid Austin, a spokesperson for Choose NJ, said the centers already open in Germany, Israel, India and Ireland have led to an explosion of business interest in New Jersey.

Dozens of companies have committed to moving to New Jersey from those countries since 2018, Austin said.

Joseph Foudy, a professor at the New York University Stern School of Business, said it’s "very hard to prove one way or the other” on the effectiveness of these kinds of centers.

Foudy said these types of centers are increasingly used by countries, states and cities across the world.

“It just raises visibility for you as a location for someone that might not know” about the area, Foudy continued.

As often touted by state officials, New Jersey is situated between the job markets of New York City and Philadelphia, sits along the Interstate 95 corridor and Northeast Corridor rail line, and boasts two major research universities: Rutgers and Princeton, along with their supply of talent.

And the state has a wide array of tax subsidy programs that businesses will want to tap into, Foudy said.

Those programs are meant to boot large corporations , start-ups , film and television projects and redevelopment projects.

Robert Scott, an economist at Monmouth University in West Long Branch,  said that "attracting only one or two businesses to open operations in NJ more than pays for the expense of the ancillary office."

What is AI? What's it used for?

AI, and more specifically generative AI, is a technology that processes data from the internet like a human brian to create content — text, pictures, video and music — based on user’s instructions.

Its emergence has meant that people who weren't computer scientists and didn't know how to write code could get their computer to perform tasks in seconds that would have take them minutes, hours or days to do in the past: respond to emails, write marketing brochures, design a magazine cover.

Generative AI could be used for more mundane tasks that could otherwise take hours or days, and data searching becomes easier.

At the forefront was OpenAi , a company based in San Francisco founded in 2015 to create a generative AI platform available to the public.

Its financial backers have included Elon Musk, Amazon and Microsoft. And it has rolled out ChatGPT, which generates text, and DALL-E , which generates digital images, with new versions providing increasingly human-like responses.

It’s a sector Murphy has referred to as a “moonshot” industry in the Garden State.

“It’s like a Wild West,” said Aaron Price, chief executive officer of Tech United, a trade group for New Jersey’s high-tech industry.

What are the downsides to AI?

The technology comes with massive downsides.

The federal Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency warned that ahead of the 2024 elections , generative AI could be used by foreign adversaries, cybercriminals and any member of the public to depict political figures in compromising positions or saying controversial statements that they didn’t actually make.

USA TODAY reported on the prevalence of AI-generated nude images of famous and non-famous people alike. Graphic images generated of Taylor Swift were one glaring example. ChatGPT meanwhile has been used to generate academic essays by students, essentially a form of cheating.

“It needs some guardrails,” Teik Lim, president of the Newark-based New Jersey Institute of Technology, said in an interview this spring.

Movies and TV filmed in New Jersey

Since 2018, New Jersey state officials have approved over $720 million in tax subsidies for film, television and “ digital media” productions , public records show.

They include support for Audible in Newark, Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story," which was filmed in Paterson , and Zack Snyder's "Army of the Dead," filmed in Atlantic City , as well as the "Sopranos" prequel "The Many Saints of Newark” and World Wrestling Entertainment in the Meadowlands .

That doesn’t count the massive film studios coming to New Jersey — including Netflix in Fort Monmouth , Lionsgate in Newark , 1888 Studios in Bayonne and another studio in West Orange — and the ones already here, such as Cinelease Studios in Jersey City.

"I’m sure they’re thinking that with Netflix opening the large studio in former Fort Monmouth that they might be able to capitalize on that decision by enticing other similar or complimentary businesses to the state," said Scott, the Monmouth economist.

State officials estimate that more than $2 billion has been spent on film projects and the ancillary economy in New Jersey since 2018.

Many state officials and film industry insiders say New Jersey’s massive film and television tax credit program has bolstered the industry in the Garden State.

“Making the math work is a big deal,” Murphy said of the tax subsidies in a sit-down interview with NorthJersey.com. “It’s table-stakes necessary.”

Inside the Patriots’ plans to develop Drake Maye and install a new offense

FOXBOROUGH — The Patriots are installing a new offense for the first time in a quarter-century, and hoping to develop a rookie into a franchise quarterback for the first time in 30 years.

Which is to say, there’s a lot going on at Gillette Stadium, particularly in the offensive coaches’ meeting rooms.

In addition to learning a voluminous playbook, No. 3 pick Drake Maye must improve his footwork, learn how to read pro defenses, and absorb some of the basic operations needed to play NFL quarterback.

The coaches say they aren’t going to rush Maye into the lineup; that’s why they signed veteran Jacoby Brissett .

“It’s a process, and a marathon,” new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said. “So we’re really going to take our time and do it the right way.”

Don’t assume that Maye will sit his entire rookie year, though, or even long into the season. Maye ultimately will determine how soon he gets into the lineup with how quickly he masters the offense and learns the protection adjustments at the line of scrimmage.

During media sessions this spring, Maye and the coaches shared insight into how they are developing Maye and teaching a new West Coast offense to 45 players.

First, Maye must learn how to crawl. He has little experience with seemingly mundane things such as getting in a huddle and calling a play. Like most college quarterbacks, Maye didn’t do a lot of that at North Carolina, running a no-huddle attack and reading the play calls at the line off poster boards on the sideline.

“We did [huddle] a little bit in the red zone, and obviously peewee football you’re calling plays, but other than that, yeah, not at this level,” Maye said. “More and more, the huddle calls are coming together. I don’t sound like I’m fumbling words in there.

“Good thing I’m a pretty big dude in there — kind of looking those guys in their eye and not just looking down. Getting a good break, a good clap, kind of gets you in a good mood, about, ‘Hey, this is going to be a good play.’ ”

New offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt (above) has faith that Drake Maye will pick up the new offense quickly.

The huddling is the easy part. Regurgitating the play call to teammates is less so. The Patriots’ new offense is a word salad.

“There’s some long calls — play calls with 12-14 words in it that you have to spit out, get the cadence down, then come up and execute,” Van Pelt said. “So there’s a lot to it, and there’s area for growth there. But he’s a smart guy, studies when he’s out of the building, and he’ll nail that.”

Maye, who played in a shotgun-oriented offense at UNC, also is learning how to take a snap and drop back. This spring, the Patriots ran a drill each practice in which the quarterbacks looked like ostriches, taking long, exaggerated steps when dropping back.

“It’s just learning to get away from under center,” quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney said. “A lot of these guys haven’t played from under center, and you’ve got to be able to get away, so we call it ‘get-aways.’ Just overexaggerating the steps and just training them to get them away.”

It was no secret when the Patriots drafted Maye that his biggest concern was inconsistent footwork . The new offense is based on timing and yards after the catch, so teaching Maye the right footwork is everything.

“I want to get his feet right, with the foundation being set first — moving with base, moving with the correct foot first, your back foot first, just trying to train their movements in the pocket,” McCartney said.

“My biggest focus is, can we tie his eyes and his feet together? Even though he’s been improving at that, there’s still a lot of work to do, so that’s the focus. Because once you can do that, all the other little nuances will come.”

When he visited the Patriots before the draft, Maye said, he watched film of the Packers’ offense from a decade ago when Van Pelt and others were coaching Aaron Rodgers.

“Taking the footwork from that system and carrying it over, I think, has been a big part,” said Van Pelt.

At North Carolina, Drake Maye worked a lot out of the shotgun and the no-huddle.

One adjustment for Maye is his stance in the shotgun. At UNC, he stood with his right foot in front. Van Pelt wants him to switch to the left.

“In our system, it’s all based on timing and rhythm in the pass game, and I think the left foot forward has always given this offense the best chance to play on time and in rhythm,” Van Pelt said.

Finally, Maye has to learn an NFL playbook, which is far more complex than the one he ran in college. The Patriots are joining nearly half the league in switching to a West Coast offense , which features the outside stretch run, zone blocking, and a lot of play-action passes from under center. It’s a marked difference from the power scheme they ran for 24 years under Bill Belichick.

“We’re doing a lot of different things, which was hard for me at the beginning,” center David Andrews said. “But it’s been a fun challenge.”

Van Pelt said his goal was to get through the entire offense in the spring — which he accomplished.

“We’ve gone through it now twice,” Van Pelt said. “So I feel like as we come back to training camp that third time, we should have a good grasp of what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Maye said he got more comfortable with the plays as the spring progressed.

“Sometimes it’s hard — you’re doing an install each day, and you get one or two reps for each play,” Maye said. “As it kind of got more into minicamp, doing the plays over and over, kind of got a good grasp of it. I picked it up well, and just trying to translate it to the field.”
