An unforgettable group holiday in Val…

My favourite holiday ever! We stayed in an incredible lodge with a wraparound balcony that looked out on the surrounding peaks - the location is crazy!!! And the best bit was that we could actually ski to the slopes within just a few steps from our front door! I can’t recommend the guys at Nuco enough for sorting our holiday - it just wouldn’t have been the same without them. First class communication leading up to holiday, the accommodation, help with ski rental and lessons they sorted everything! The reps have all the local knowledge and gave the BEST tips for routes, bars and food too! Val Thorens is an incredible place but I think you need the inside knowledge to make the most of it. Anyone considering a ski break I 100% recommend using Nuco - especially if you’re in a big group like we were! Thank you so much guys! We’ll definitely be coming back!

Hi John, Thanks for taking the time to leave us such a detailed 5* review. We're so glad to hear your time in Val Thorens was unforgettable, and that the NUCO reps made sure you had all the local knowledge. Hope to see you on the slopes again next year! Thanks, Team NUCO

MARJON AVORIAZ SKI TRIP

Didn’t think I was going to enjoy skiing as much as I did but this has been the best week. Everyone was super friendly and helpful which made it super hard to leave. See you next year ◡̈

Hi Abbie, Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us a 5* review. We're so glad to hear you had the best week in Avoriaz and everyone was friendly and helpful! Hope to see you on the slopes again soon! Thanks, Team NUCO

Terrible company

Terrible company - instead of a 25 hour journey it took £60. Missed two days of skiing and accom, lack of communication. Attempts to open discussion of compensation ignored. While the coach journey there was refunded, this should not be considered compensation. We should be getting more than then half the coach refunded as compensation, including the days of the hotel we missed. NUCO needs to step up and compensate us for 3 days of travel. Don’t bother with NUCO - unless you want poor communication and a traumatising experience. Shout out to our amazing rep Mia though xx

Date of experience : March 31, 2023

Hi Kira, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are very sorry that your outbound coach C101 was severely impacted by the critical incident at the Port of Dover. Whilst we expected some additional delays over the weekend of the 1st of April due to the beginning of the Easter Holidays, the delay you experienced was unprecedented and exasperated by a number of other factors, this included the lengthy French border process and bad weather on the channel. As the situation was managed by local police and the port authorities, the delay was out of our control, however, we did all we could to keep the reps on your coaches as informed as we could to then relay the information to all passengers. Alongside communication with the rep on board your coach, we also sent a number of chats relating to your delay and our resort support team was available 24 hours per day should you have needed to contact us. We can see you did contact us via live chat, which was responded to within minutes. An email detailing the compensation provided to all passengers on your trip was sent a few days into your trip. We replied to any queries you had promptly, so it's suprising to hear you feel ignored. Compensation was provided for the delay and subsistence (food and drink) during your delay. In addition, we refunded elements of your holiday that were impacted by your late arrival (1-day ski pass and equipment hire, events and one-night accommodation). We're glad to hear that through this, you thought Mia was amazing. We agree and will certainly pass your feedback on! Again, we would like to apologise for the terrible delay you experienced on your outbound coach journey. We hope that despite this, you still managed to have an enjoyable time in Alpe d'Huez. Kind regards NUCO Travel

Jay and Vivian and Fergus were incredible on our TTS Snowsquad trip to Andorra! Jay hung out with my group and I a decent amount and helped to make the trip just that much more memorable! He was very helpful in times of need. He should 100% be on more TTS trips!!

WORST ORGANISATION POSSIBLE -

WORST ORGANISATION POSSIBLE - Never in my life have I experienced such a S*T show - no communication from any of the Nuco reps. We MISSED 2 days worth of our holiday due to badly organised coaches, poor time management and the company not putting us (the paying customers) first!!!! The coaches there and back were horrendously late, smelly, cold, cramped and overall terrible. Reps on the coaches were rude towards C108 & left behind 16 passengers in the freezing cold at 5am all the way through until 7am. Events were over sold, music was repeatedly awful & most definitely not worth the huge expense we students and young adults paid for. DO NOT PAY FOR THIS OR ATTEND UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE DOWN £1K & be exhausted

Date of experience : April 03, 2023

Afternoon Liberty, Thank you for leaving a review. We would like to respond to the points you have raised in your review to hopefully provide some clarity. During your trip, our team sent numerous chats relating to your delay, arrival, hire, lessons, events etc, so I don't think it would be accurate to say you had no communication. We had a team of reps in resort but also a team in the UK on live chat that is available 08:00 - 22:00 and a resort support number 24 hours a day, should you have had any questions, our team was and are available to assist. I can see you did message our chat twice during the week regarding your coach delay and then about adding an event ticket to your booking, our team responded quickly to these messages. For your journey to resort, I believe your coach departed London on time and only experienced the delay once you arrived in Dover, as did thousands of other coach passengers. You were originally due to arrive into resort on Saturday evening at approximately 20:00 but with the delay at Dover you arrived just after midday Sunday. We understand and appreciate this was a significant delay, and we are still reviewing all coach departure and arrival times with our management team and should we be in a position to offer any form of reimbursement, we will update you as soon as possible. The delay all passengers experienced was not something we could have foreseen or planned for. As a busy Easter weekend some delays are always expected but nothing to this magnitude. The management of coaches at Dover was managed by the police and the Port of Dover, there is not much we could have done to improve the situation you found yourself in, unfortunately. As for the events during the week, all events and venues have a maximum capacity that we will always adhere to and as such the events were not oversold, these may have been busy, but not over capacity. With regards to the acts and music, these are planned and discussed in great length and detail with your snowsports committee to ensure these are right for your university and club, this may come down to differences in music taste. The base price for your holiday was £399 and this included your accommodation, lift pass, trip tee, discount wristband and entry to some events. On top of that, you chose the additional booking options that included £229 for the return coach travel and ferry, equipment rental, lessons and events. We understand that you paid a lot of money for your trip and we genuinely are sorry you didn't have an enjoyable time. We do all we can to keep the price as low as we possibly can for our passengers and we have done just that, had you booked what you did independently, this would have been at a greater cost. Finally, you mentioned the reps onboard your coach, if you can please email [email protected] with some more information and specifics, we would like to ensure this is looked into and followed up with the relevant people. Again, we would like to apologise for the terrible delay you experienced on your outbound journey, this is far from the norm and if we could we have done anything to avoid this, please know we absolutely would have. We hope you were able to enjoy the skiing Alpe d'Huez had to offer and if there is anything you would like to discuss further, please do get in touch. Kind regards Team NUCO

Luvski trip almost 5*

I went on the Luvski trip the other week and had the best time! All the reps were lovely and helpful. I would’ve given this a 5* review however I would’ve liked to see at least one event that was for anyone apart of the LGBTQ community. Just would’ve been nice to know who to look out for! Thanks for the great trip!

Hi Eloise, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review - we really appreciate it! We're so glad to hear that you had the best time in Val Thorens with Luvski. The events are designed by the Luvski team so we will certainly pass your feedback on to them and hopefully next year they'll be able to offer events for the LGBTQ community. Hope to see you on the slopes again next year! Thanks, Team NUCO

Emmeke provided exceptional assistance in booking my ski holiday. Their professionalism, enthusiasm, and attention to detail made the entire process stress-free. Emmeke's expertise and personalized approach ensured I got the perfect package tailored to my preferences and budget. I highly recommend Emmeke to anyone looking for top-notch assistance in planning their next adventure.

Date of experience : April 29, 2024

Hi Oliver, Thanks so much for leaving some feedback. We're so glad Emmeke was able to assist with booking your holiday package and that you managed to book something that was perfect for your requirements. Emmeke and the team will be happy to help with booking your next trip. Hope to see you on the slopes again soon. Thanks, Team NUCO

Was a bit skeptical about the ski trip…

Was a bit skeptical about the ski trip before as my ability was a bit worse than other. However the NUCO members were really helpful especially Leo was helpful in helping settling us in. We got an overview of what and what not to do which was handy.

Date of experience : December 10, 2023

Hi Craig, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a 5* review. We're so glad to hear that Leo was great in resort and helped you to settle in. See you on the slopes soon. Thanks, Team NUCO

Couldn’t have picked a better tour operator!

Had an amazing holiday with NUCO - whole thing was really well organised and took away the stress of organising a ski trip (plus made it so much cheaper). I didn’t realise what sort of events could even happen in a ski resort and loved all of the massive dj’s and extra things like the rail jam - so much fun! Would definitely book through NUCO again and can’t wait for my next trip!

Date of experience : March 23, 2022

Hi Briony, Thanks so much for the great review! We're so happy to hear you had a great trip and we hope to bring you all the fun again this season! Team NUCO

Their return policy is horrible.

I paid 150 pounds to secure a spot, as I was led to believe that they fill up quickly. However, 10 weeks later, there's not a soul on the waiting list. It's strange why there was such urgency if this wasn't the case. Unfortunately, I lost my security deposit as it seems to be the only way to obtain a refund is through a name switch. It's frustrating that there wasn't a grace period for returns, even just a few days would have been reasonable. Shortly after payment, I discovered I couldn't attend due to visa issues. Despite my prompt request for a refund, I am told that reimbursement was contingent upon finding a replacement participant. Navigating the chat function has been unhelpful. They redirect me to the group leader, who then sends me back to the chat function for support who then redirected me back to group leader. It's unclear why my 150 pounds are necessary, especially since I requested a refund immediately. Additionally, now they are saying there is a 24-hour grace period mentioned in the policy. I am not sure why this wasn't mentioned during our chat because I tried getting it as soon as possible. In the end, they kept my 150 pounds for operational arrangements to fulfil the holiday I am not even going for so yeah.

Date of experience : February 13, 2024

Hi Aamir, Thank you for leaving us a review, although we are disappointed that this is 1-star. We are sorry to hear you cannot travel on your holiday due to visa issues. The cancellation fees for your holiday were displayed at the time of booking, and in the terms and conditions that you agreed to before confirming any payment. This was further indicated in the booking confirmation email that you received on 1st Dec 2023, the day you made your booking. It's disappointing to hear that despite being informed of the cancellation terms, you were unaware of any fees until now. Contrary to what you've indicated, we offer a 24-hour grace period in which your trip could have been cancelled without charge. We understand that sometimes plans change and had you been in touch, we would have been happy to process this for you. Unfortunately, you did not contact us nor inform us that you were looking to cancel at that time. We made no push for you to book your place on the trip and you had the option to book your place as soon as the trip was available, or wait and run the risk of the trip selling out. I hope you can understand that we require passengers to pay a deposit at the time of booking so that we can begin to make operational arrangements to fulfil your holiday. I can see you have recently spoken with our team, who have advised of the fees that would be associated with cancelling your booking at this stage. They also provided information on processing a name change on your booking, which is currently free of charge and could be a way for you to get your deposit back. As there is no waiting list for your trip, there is no one we can offer your place to and as such, you were advised to contact your group leader as they may have been better placed to know if someone was interested in joining the trip. It's disappointing to hear that so far you've not found anyone to take your place, but we will be happy to process this for you should you find someone in the coming weeks. If we can provide any further clarification, please don't hesitate to get in touch at [email protected]. Best wishes, Team NUCO

This is the second time my group has travelled to Val Thorens with Nuco Travel. Isabella was so helpful, and patient as we changed our group numbers and requests. Everything ran really smoothly and the portal made it really easy to organise the whole group. Thanks Isabella for an amazing trip!

Date of experience : February 17, 2024

Hi Louise, Thanks for taking the time to leave us some feedback. We're so glad to hear you've enjoyed your holiday to Val Thornes - it's one of our favourites too! We will be sure to pass your feedback onto Isabella and the team. Hope to see you on the slopes again soon. Thanks, Team NUCO

Shocking accommodation and poor customer experience

For the money paid our accommodation was dreadful. It was said it would sleep 5, I’m not sure this meant 5 adult humans. The rooms were dirty on arrival and unprepared as we had to make up our own beds. The NUCO reps were clueless on most resort topics and having paid for an extended lift pass I was told there had been a mistake and I could only have a local lift pass for the first day, no offer of compensation and it took me chasing on the second day to be given the correct pass.

Date of experience : March 20, 2022

Hi Austen, I'm not able to find your booking with just your first name I'm afraid so I won't be able to respond with specifics. We are sorry to hear your accommodation wasn't as you had expected and this was dirty on your arrival. For our group trips, all accommodations would be booked to accommodate adults and these can include the use of double beds, sofa beds, pull out beds and bunkbeds and they would be booked at full occupancy, utilising the living space. It's disappointing and we are sorry to hear your apartment was dirty on arrival, as mentioned, I'm unable to see your individual booking to check any correspondence we had during your trip but if we were notified of any apartments that weren't cleaned to a satisfactory level we will have raised this with the accommodation agency straight away to rectify this. Due to us not being able to operate a season for a few years because of the pandemic, and with many of our trips being cancelled earlier in the year, not all our reps will have been able to visit each resort and so they may not have know specifics for the resort you were in. We would, of course, like all our reps to have an in-depth knowledge of all the resorts we operate in and we do try to allocate reps to resorts they know but unfortunately, that isn't always possible and we do need our reps to visit resorts they don't know from time to time. Our reps will have assisted passengers as best they could and we do also have our chat feature available 08:00 - 22:00 CET for any questions or queries passengers may have. If you can email us at [email protected] with your full name and NUCO booking reference number and we'll be happy to reimburse you for the day upgrade on your lift pass if this was an error on our part. Thank you. Charlotte NUCO Travel

I recently booked a ski trip with my friends to Pas de la Casa in Andorra with NUCO and had a fantastic experience. Booking was incredibly easy, and I found a great, affordable offer without any hassle. What really made the difference was the exceptional customer service from Emmeke. She replied to every message within the day and was incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. I highly recommend Nuco Travel for their ease of booking, great offers, and outstanding customer service.

Date of experience : December 20, 2023

Hi Lucas, We're so glad you found the booking process incredibly easy, and that Emmeke was helpful throughout. If you have any further questions, Emmeke or any team will be happy to help. We hope you have a great holiday! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a great detailed review. Team NUCO

Badly organised trip … not happy about the compensation which they have offered.

It took us 57 hours to reach alpe d’huez on a ski trip with NUCO, with the university of Nottingham. NUCO were very unorganised at handling the situation and have failed to give us sufficient compensation. I feel they did not look after my welfare and did not do everything they could. We arrived 2 days later than expected and only were able to get one night compensation for the hotel and only half our coach refunded - how is this fair, it was a awfully organised journey there and I won’t be travelling with them again.

Hi Elizabeth, Thank you for your review. We would like to start by offering a sincere apology that your experience was a disappointing one. We hope that we can explain the situation, which will hopefully provide a better understanding that the delay was not something we could have foreseen or planned for. As a busy Easter weekend some delays are always expected but nothing to this magnitude. A critical incident was declared by the Port of Dover as waiting times to cross the channel increased, owing to bad weather on the channel, a road traffic accident and lengthy waits at French immigration. The entire situation was being controlled and overseen by local police and port authorities, so no amount of foresight or intervention on our part could have gone any way in reducing the delay you experienced. I can assure you that our operations team, customer service team and our Managing Director were doing everything we could to ensure you arrived as safely and quickly as possible. Throughout the situation, passenger safety and welfare were at the heart of any decisions made and we were in constant contact with the NUCO rep on board as well as the relevant ferry operators and coach drivers. The situation that unravelled was out of our control and we kept the reps on your coaches as informed as we could to then relay the information to all passengers. We have compensated you for the delay and for subsistence during this time, as well as a refund for a 1-day ski pass and equipment hire, events missed and 1 night's accommodation. Again, we would like to apologise for the delay you faced and hope you still managed to have an enjoyable time in Alpe d'Huez. Kind regards NUCO Travel

Excellent Customer Service

My university booked the ski trip with NUCO, but unfortunately the trip couldn't go ahead with COVID-19 restrictions but they handled the booking so professionally, managing expectations, delivering prompt full refunds and putting us first at every opportunity. We will certainly be re-booking next year with NUCO as they have proven they are reliable even in the most uncertain circumstances. Thank you guys so much!

Helpful, quality staff!

I signed up for a ski trip with my Uni but unfortunately due to covid it wouldn’t have been possible, NUCO not only changed the trip date twice to accommodate this but also extended due dates for complete payment, I just personally wanted a refund and the staff were so helpful and understanding and talked me through it straight away, the refund was issued quickly with no hassle and tbh I’m gutted as I know it would have been amazing and in the future I will definitely be booking with NUCO x

We are gutted as well Pandora! We're really happy though that after you made the decision you wanted to cancel your booking, it was a quick and easy process. Hopefully you'll join us for another trip in the future! Thanks for leaving a review, NUCO

A company that cares

Was on a skiing trip with NUCO when France shut down due to the covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately our trip was curtailed, but NUCO were fantastic at handling what could have otherwise been a disaster. They were responsive, pro-active, and fought hard on our behalf. We all got home safely, and we all got our money back. Couldn't have asked for better service. Prior to that, the part of the trip we did have was also excellent.

Hi Bryn, thank you so much for leaving us a review! Apologies for the delay in seeing this, most of our reviews tend to come from Google. It was definitely a situation we have never and hope to never be in again, but we are so glad to hear you and your group got home safely and were happy with the service you received. It is so important to us. We hope to get you to the mountains again in the future. Thanks again, NUCO.

History of Irkutsk

Foundation of irkutsk.

The oldest traces of people who lived in the territory of Irkutsk are about 50 thousand years old. Settlements and burial grounds dating back to the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages were discovered on both banks of the Angara River.

Today’s Irkutsk originates from a fortified settlement laid by the Russian explorer Yakov Pokhabov in the summer of 1661. The territory on the bank of the Angara River at its confluence with the Irkut River (hence the name of the settlement) was favorable for agriculture and cattle breeding. The waterway provided communication with the Yenisei River and Lake Baikal.

In 1682, this settlement became the center of the Irkutsk Voivodeship, which included all the fortified settlements of the Baikal region. In 1686, Irkutsk was given the status of a town. After the settlement of Russian-Chinese relations by the Nerchinsk treaty (1689), trade caravans on the way to China (furs, tea, sugar, fabrics) began to pass through Irkutsk. In 1700, about 1,000 people lived in Irkutsk.

In 1719, the town became the center of the Irkutsk Province as part of the Siberian Governorate. In 1730, the merchant Lanin opened an ironworks. In 1745, the first stone residential building was built. In 1762, after the abolition of the state monopoly on the export of furs, the “golden age” of the Irkutsk merchants began. By the end of the 18th century, merchants began to play a leading role in the civil life of Irkutsk.

More historical facts…

Irkutsk - the gate of the Russian Empire to the Far East

In 1764, the Irkutsk Governorate was formed. In the 1770s, the Irkutsk fair was officially opened. In the 1780s, a public library, a theological seminary, a school, and a printing house appeared in the town. In 1790, the dilapidated walls of the fortress were demolished. Irkutsk became a kind of “window to the East” of the Russian Empire, all expeditions organized to the Far East, Mongolia, China, Alaska were formed in this town. From here the settlement of the Amur banks began.

In 1807, the first hospital was opened with private funds. In 1826, the first exiled Decembrists arrived in Irkutsk. In 1836, the first private bank was opened. In 1839, the first public library was opened. In the 1840s, Irkutsk turned into the “capital of the Lena River gold”, a place of concentration of capital of gold miners. In 1856, the population of Irkutsk was about 24,100 people.

In 1864, a telegraph line connected Irkutsk with St. Petersburg. In June 1879, a big fire almost completely destroyed the historic center of the town. The decline of the gold industry began in the late 1880s. In 1897, about 51,000 people lived in the city.

According to the initial project, the Trans-Siberian Railway was supposed to go along a shorter route north of Lake Baikal, away from Irkutsk. However, the project was changed and the first train arrived in Irkutsk in 1898. The railway caused the opening of new transport enterprises, revitalized coal mining and the forest industry, and contributed to the influx of population.

Irkutsk in the 20th century and beyond

During the First World War, more than 10 thousand residents of Irkutsk were mobilized. The industrial enterprises of the pre-revolutionary city were small and mostly artisanal. Most people were employed in trade, services, gardening, and handicraft production. During the years of the Civil War, power in Irkutsk changed several times.

In 1922-1923, Irkutsk was the center of Mongol-Buryat Autonomous Oblast, since 1930 - the center of the East Siberian Krai, since 1937 - Irkutsk Oblast. In 1923, the first stadium was built. The population of Irkutsk was 88,264 people. In 1936, the first reinforced concrete bridge named after Lenin was opened across the Angara River. In the 1930s, an aircraft factory, a metallurgical plant, a sewing factory, a soap factory, and other enterprises were built in Irkutsk.

In 1939, the population of the city was about 250,000 people. During the Second World War, about 20 thousand Irkutsk residents were drafted into the Red Army, about half of them were killed in battles. During the war, some enterprises from the western regions of the USSR were evacuated to Irkutsk. They remained in the city after the war.

In 1958, the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station was commissioned. At this time, the city mainly consisted of wooden one-story houses. In the 1960-1970s, large-scale housing and industrial construction unfolded. In 1970, the population was about 451,000 people.

Until the early 1990s, Irkutsk remained one of the largest industrial centers of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic with high-tech mechanical engineering: aircraft manufacturing, instrument making, radio electronics; as well as the production of metallurgical and mining equipment, automotive parts, and machine tools. Other major industries were the production of building materials, furniture, printing, light, and food industries. The five largest factories of the city employed over 40 thousand people. In 1989, about 626,000 people lived in Irkutsk.

After the transition to a market economy, a lot of engineering and light industry enterprises were unable to adapt to the new economic conditions and closed. Over the next years, the population of the city began to decline. In 2008, the population of Irkutsk declined to 575,000 people. In 2009, population growth began again. In 2011, Irkutsk celebrated its 350th anniversary.

Irkutsk - Features

Irkutsk is a unique, old city, the capital of Eastern Siberia.located on the banks of the Angara River in the immediate vicinity of the reservoir formed by the dam of the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station, about 76 from Lake Baikal. The nearest large city is Ulan-Ude located 457 km east of Irkutsk, on the other side of Lake Baikal. The distance to Moscow is about 5,200 km.

The Angara River divides Irkutsk into the right-bank and left-bank parts. The length of the river within the city is 29 km, the width under the Old Angara Bridge in the city center is about 300 meters; there are more than 30 islands on the river.

The climate of Irkutsk is sharply continental with significant daily and annual fluctuations in air temperature. Winter is cold, long and lasts more than 5 months (from late October to early April). The coldest month of the year is January, the average temperature is minus 17.8 degrees Celsius. Summer in the first half is hot and dry, in the second half there are heavy rains. The warmest month is July, the average temperature is plus 18.3 degrees Celsius.

Irkutsk is a large industrial center of Eastern Siberia. “Irkutskenergo” is one of the largests energy companies in Russia with 3 hydroelectric power stations of the Angara River cascade with a capacity of 9 GW, thermal power plants with a capacity of 3.9 GW, as well as coal mines and regional heating systems. Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station produces 4.1 billion kWh per year.

The leading industrial enterprise of the city is the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, which gave the name to the current Russian aircraft manufacturing corporation “Irkut”. The plant produces military and civil aircraft and employs about 12 thousand people. Irkutsk Heavy Engineering Plant manufactures gold mining, mining and processing, and metallurgical equipment.

Irkutsk is one of the largest scientific and educational centers of Siberia. The city has a branch of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences with a network of scientific institutes and a number of universities, in which about 100 thousand students study.

Irkutsk International Airport provides flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Novosibirsk, Yakutsk. Public transport includes buses, trolleybuses, trams.

On the coat of arms of Irkutsk you can see a “babr” holding a sable in its mouth. From the 17th century, the word “babr” was used to name the Amur tiger inhabiting the Baikal region. There is an interesting story with this word.

In 1859, a large-scale reform of Russian heraldry was launched in order to correct errors accumulated over time. However, it led to new errors. The word “babr” was mostly known to local residents and the people involved in the reform decided that it was just a mistake in the Russian word “bobr” (meaning “beaver”) and approved the new description of the coat of arms of Irkutsk - a beaver holding a sable in its mouth.

However, not a single image was painted of the Irkutsk coat of arms with a beaver holding a sable in its mouth. Instead, the tiger received a large beaver tail and webbed hind legs and turned into a new, mythical animal.

Irkutsk is one of the most dangerous cities in Russia in terms of criminal situation. During your visit to Irkutsk it would be better to avoid walking alone in the evening/night time, especially not in the central part of the city.

Update. This question was asked and answered in 2010. At that time, the Irkutsk region including the city of Irkutsk was on the 80th place among 83 regions of Russia by the number of crimes per 100,000 inhabitants (27.12). In 2017, the situation was better but the region remained at the bottom of the list, on the 63th place among 82 regions (19.5).
