NOMATIC began its travel journey as a Kickstarter campaign to make the “most functional travel bag ever.” Now a mainstream gear company—they’ve even partnered with photographer Peter McKinnon on a line of gear , some of which we’ve already tested

The bag we’re testing here is the NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L, part of the brand’s second iteration of travel bags. The 14L Travel Pack is designed for travelers with a smaller frame (pause while petite people rejoice) and is 1.5 inches shorter and 1 inch narrower than the 20L NOMATIC Travel Pack . It’s not just for everyday carry, though, since it can expand by 50% to 21L. If that isn’t enough for you, or if you’re on the taller side of the spectrum, go ahead and check out that review. We’ll wait.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Back

All set? Great! Shorties everywhere—and everyone else, we’re inclusive—let’s dive in!

External Components

Taking a look at the NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L, the first thing you’ll notice is the almost leather-like material. No cows were harmed in the making of this backpack, though. Instead, the 100% vegan bag has a water-resistant tarpaulin exterior that’s three-quarters polyester and the remaining quarter nylon. The coating means it’ll resist much of what Mother Nature throws at you, whether you’re commuting by foot in soggy weather or traveling to Thailand during the rainy season.

While you may typically reach for a separate bag for a trip than what you cart to the office every day, the Travel Pack 14L aims to take you seamlessly from work to short weekend getaways, which we’re guessing is why they put “travel” in the name.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Carry Handle

There are a few exterior features to make traveling easier with this pack. For one, a well-padded top carry handle allows you to tote it around that way instead of as a backpack, and there are also two smaller, thinner handles on each side of the bag. They’re padded, just not as much as the top handle. Still, they’re comfortable enough if you want to carry the back briefcase style.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Harness

If you want to do that, you can tuck the shoulder straps away through the luggage pass-through on the back panel. The pass-through is a simple webbing strap, though it gets the job done. To tuck away the straps, you must lengthen them completely, then tuck them behind the pass-through. If you don’t feel like readjusting it back to fit on your frame afterward, you may want to leave them loose when carrying it in briefcase mode. This is more applicable to smaller users since they’re more likely to have the fit cinched up tightly. And if it is tighter, there’s less strap to flop around, so you may not need to bother tucking them away. Of course, your mileage may vary, so you do you.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Brand

There’s minimal branding on the bag, consisting of the NOMATIC logo printed on the front—slightly south of the center and to the right—and a patch-like tag with the name embroidered on it sewn to the left shoulder strap.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Zippers Carry Handle

Now to hardware. According to a NOMATIC post , their bags includes industry-standard YKK zippers “where you need ‘em.” On the Travel Pack 14L, that apparently means to open the main compartment and the admin panel on the Travel Pack 14L because most of the remaining zippers—including the expansion/compression zipper—are Zoom. That feels like a bit of a miss since that zipper in particular gets hung up as it travels around corners. Is that due to the zipper itself or the expansion design? We’re not sure. We are certain we’d feel more comfortable tugging a YKK zipper around a tight spot than another brand, though.

Other hardware includes a Woojin buckle on the sternum strap and unbranded adjuster slides on the shoulder straps. We haven’t had a problem with any hardware throughout our testing period.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Strap

As for the harness system, let’s start with the shoulder straps we’ve already mentioned a few times. While we don’t think the padding on the Travel Pack 20L’s straps is dense enough for its total capacity (it expands to 30L), the same straps seem adequate with the smaller 14L-21L volume. The harness system appears to get the job done when we pack it with clothing, a laptop and related tech accessories, and two hardcover books for a weekend trip.

A sternum strap along a sliding rail is easy to adjust, although not removable, and includes some elastic on the right side to really dial in the fit. There’s no strap keeper on this or the shoulder straps, though, so you’ll have to deal with dangling straps or lock things down with something else— VELCRO Cable Ties , anyone?

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Back Padding

The four distinct sections of structural foam along the back panel—one for each quarter to allow room for air to pass through for breathability—are the same density as the shoulder straps. And while stuffing the bag with clothing, books, and tech stiffens things up quite a bit, it’s still comfier than not, although you may find it too much if you’re hauling this thing across town without a break for a subway or a bus. That’s sometimes the tradeoff for nice aesthetics. If you want it to carry like a well-padded, well-supported hiking backpack, you may have to pick up a bag that looks like one, and the NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L is not that bag.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Side by Side

Instead, the Travel Pack 14L is a posh, modern bag that seems most at home in the city. You’ll feel at home carrying this bag in an airport, restaurant, or boardroom, even when expanded. Since the expansion material is the same sturdy fabric as the rest of the pack, gravity doesn’t pull it down when you open it up, so there’s no saggy-bag syndrome.

It’s easy to find the right fit with the harness system, and aside from feeling stiff when the bag is fully packed, we find it pretty comfortable. This bag has a lot of structure, and there’s little you can do to avoid feeling that, which is to say it’s not a bag that will conform to the curve of your back.

Inside The Pack

All right, enough about how you carry it. Let’s get to why you do so—what it can hold. Each side includes a magnetic travel water bottle pocket with stretch mesh. The exterior of the flap is the same tarpaulin as the remainder of the bag, and when you pull it out, the mesh stretches to accommodate a wide variety of bottle sizes.

We find that it doesn’t always snap back into place on its own when you remove your bottle, so make sure to smooth it down if you prefer the streamlined look. Otherwise, it looks like many other backpacks with the bottle pocket sticking out, which is also OK.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L In Use

Flipping around to the front, you’ll find a small quick-access pocket lined with soft material, where you can pop your phone without worrying about scratches. There’s space for a wallet and keys, too, although, of course, keys can potentially scratch your phone, so pick and choose what you prefer.

Below that is an admin panel or accessory pocket. It encompasses the lower two-thirds of the front of the bag and opens with a U-shaped zipper so you can see everything easily. Two fabric gussets keep it from flopping completely open on each side, however, they still allow the panel to open halfway, drawbridge-style.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Organization

Against the bag’s main compartment are two stretchy mesh pockets that easily accommodate bulkier cords or wall chargers. Four more pockets are on the opposite side, against the front panel. The top one zips shut and features RFID protection, so it’s a good place for your travel wallet and passport to protect them from digital theft. Below is another large zip pocket for a small notebook or other tiny travel essentials, and there’s a pen slot next to it. In front of the zip pocket are two more mesh pouches. They’re perfect for a mouse, your AirPods, or any other small accessory you want to access quickly.

Of course, there’s also room in this section for a slim tech pouch, especially if you don’t fill all the pockets, so if you prefer to move from this Travel Pack to a sling or a different laptop bag without unpacking everything, the organizational features kindly step out of the way.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Main

Heading into the main compartment, it also opens fully with a zipper that runs around the top of the bag, so it’s easy to pack and see everything all at once. At the top, there’s a banked curve like a Hot Wheels track running back toward the carry handle at the top, which makes it so that you can open just this top portion and reach inside to grab a book or your glasses without everything else spilling out.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Hard Case Pocket

Speaking of which, there are two side pockets in here, and the one on the left comes with a hard case for your glasses. It also includes a fabric pouch with a cinch top to keep them from scratching on the plastic—nice! If you don’t carry eyewear, this case slides right out so you can stash a travel umbrella or something else slim, like rolls of socks.

The opposite side features a similar pocket. This one has a long retractable leash with a key ring on the end attached to the bottom. While you should have no problem reaching a door with the keys still attached, it’s a little too awkward to access through the main compartment zipper and down in the bottom of the pocket to do so regularly. Plus, it’s a jump ring, so your best bet is to clip a carabiner with your keys onto this or only slide on keys that can stay in your backpack, like those of your gym locker. You won’t want to attach car keys here, that’s for sure. Both these pockets lie flat against the sidewall of the backpack if you’re not using them.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Flap Pockets

Alongside the front are two large mesh zipper pockets for gear you don’t want falling to the bottom of the bag. With all the pockets in the easier-to-access admin panel, we don’t find much use for these daily. They come in handy when you’re packing for a trip as a place to lock down your toiletries or other small gear. Like the remaining pockets on the Travel Pack 14L, they get out of the way when not in use and protrude into the main compartment when you fill them.

Above the top pocket is a circular piece of plastic you can press open. It’s a cord pass-through to the quick-access pocket, so you can charge your phone from a battery bank stashed in the top mesh pocket.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Shoe Compartment

Against the back side of the bag is a large mesh divider splitting the main compartment in two. You can open it to access a large shoe pocket, so it keeps the dirt away from your clothing and eliminates the need for a separate shoe pouch. A large pair of women’s athletic shoes fit easily here, as will most travel shoes. However, if you’re rocking some men’s extra-wide size 13s, they’ll stick out the top of the pouch and may not fit in this narrow bag. Of course, if your feet are that big, you’ll probably have no problem carrying the 20L pack on a frame that matches your sole, so it’s less likely an issue.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Side Carry Handle

Since you can open the main compartment to pack it like a suitcase, it should come as no surprise that the expansion zipper runs entirely around the bag, like many types of standard luggage. Inside the expansion, though, is a hidden zipper allowing you access to the main compartment behind the mesh panel, so you can pull out your shoes without completely opening the bag if you need to switch from sneakers to flip flops or vice versa while out and about.

There’s a potential for this hidden zipper’s pull tabs to stick out and make it more difficult to unzip the expansion if they are at the top right corner of the bag. Instead, leave them in the middle of a side instead of a corner when you compress the bag.

OK, so if you’ve kept count, we’ve opened four zippers parading across or around this backpack. Now, onto the fifth! It also runs around the top three sides of the bag and turns the bottom corners, too. It opens the laptop compartment, designed to be TSA-ready, so when you go through the security line, you can unzip it and lay it flat without taking your computer out of the bag. Instead, it can slide through the scanner flat since there’s nothing above or below it. However, it’s up to the individual agent whether to allow this, so how helpful this is for you depends on their permissibility. Always follow the instructions of your agents, folks; don’t try to argue with them about bag design! Nevertheless, the feature is there if you can make use of it.

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L Laptop Compartment

The laptop sleeve is along the back panel in a well-padded pocket topped with a wide tab to hold it in place. It attaches using a hook-and-loop fastener to the front of the pocket, and we’re getting a little nitpicky here, but the loop side of the fastener is slightly off-center, so it folds over a little to the right. Hopefully, this is just an issue with our product sample, and yours is in line! It doesn’t affect functionality, just aesthetics.

On the opposite side is an unpadded slip pocket for a tablet or documents. A bluetooth keyboard works well here, too, and that’s it for the laptop compartment; it’s really straightforward.

Overall, this bag does a good job as an everyday backpack and has the potential to work for a quick trip or personal item bag. There are a few quirks we’re not loving. Yet the other features—like how easy it is to pack with cubes and the pockets that are there if you need them and out of the way if you don’t—combine in a nice, small travel pack that could serve you well, especially if you’re not packing bulky gear or heading out on a very long trip. If you’re bringing a few pairs of jeans and sweatshirts, you may want to upgrade to the next size for more space.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • Laptop compartment opens completely
  • Material coating gives a leather-like look to accents
  • Hard glasses case quite large, although it’s an interesting include
  • Like the ability to access the shoe pouch without having to open the entire main compartment
  • Challenging to make use of all the pockets
  • Strap adjustment lost when you tucking them behind luggage pass-through

NOMATIC Travel Pack 14L

NOMATIC Travel Pack Review: Hype or Worth It?

The NOMATIC Backpack blend sleek style with exceptional utility, offering organized compartments and durable construction for the savvy urban traveler.

nomatic travel pack 14l vs 20l

The NOMATIC backpack line is supposed to offer the bags to end all bags. That’s what they want you to think, anyway. If raising $2.2 million on Kickstarter for their Travel Bag is anything to go by, they’re pretty convincing.

They make three different backpacks:

  • The NOMATIC Backpack
  • The NOMATIC Travel Pack
  • The NOMATIC Travel Bag

Confusing, right?

The NOMATIC backpack names are way too similar. While the design might be good, NOMATIC desperately needs some help with naming their bags.

I don’t usually dive into criticism so early, but the names are a major pain point when you’re trying to research which NOMATIC Travel Pack, Bag, or Backpack you want. So, I’m going to set the differences straight in this NOMATIC backpack review.

I'm breaking down all the differences of each bag in this NOMATIC Backpack review.

There are a few fundamental differences that you need to know about all three bags in order to make the right decision.

NOMATIC bags are brimming with features—they’re definitely in the running for one of the best backpack brands on the market! Each NOMATIC backpack comes with 20+ features. They’re supposed to have a place for everything. On top of that, they all meet the specs for carry-on luggage regulations.

On paper, NOMATIC travel backpacks seem to be the sure winners for the most functional bags ever, especially for travelers.

But features aren’t everything. My first impressions of these NOMATIC bags? They’re very high quality and innovative, but they’re a little over-designed. I’ll take a look at the ins and outs in this NOMATIC backpack review so you can decide for yourself.

NOMATIC Backpack Review: Quick Answers

  • Small: NOMATIC Backpack (20L, expandable to 24L).
  • Medium: NOMATIC Travel Pack (20L, expandable to 30L).
  • Large: NOMATIC Travel Bag (30L and 40L).
  • All three bags are carry-on approved for pretty much every airline.
  • Super innovative and organized.
  • Sleek and modern design.

NOMATIC: Who Are They?

NOMATIC is an entirely crowdfunded company based in Salt Lake City, Utah. They only started in 2014, but they already have a vast range of products. In addition to three styles of backpacks that range from commuter-size to travel-friendly, NOMATIC offers everything from wallets to notebooks.

Their backpacks bring an element of style to the backpacking world. They’re much sleeker than your average backpack. They steer clear of exaggerated colors and designs that scream “I’m a backpacker!”

NOMATIC is committed to impeccable quality and highly-functional design. People trust NOMATIC to make great products. That’s why they ended up raising $2.2 million on Kickstarter to get their first bag off the ground. The NOMATIC Travel Pack and NOMATIC Backpack came along next.

And did you know…

Their target was only $20,000? That was one successful Kickstarter.

NOMATIC Backpack Overview

Nomatic Camera Backpack

But that does mean it’s limited as an everyday backpack. It doesn’t have the specialized features that the NOMATIC Travel Pack and Bag have.

Its many pockets are perfect for organization geeks and commuters with laptops (including students). Several features make it perfect for commuting or a day trip, including cord pass throughs so you can do things like recharge your phone while still using it.

At its smallest size, the NOMATIC backpack is 20L, but you can use the built-in expansion zippers to add a generous 4L to the main compartment. (Keep in mind that even this size isn’t ideal for one-bag travelers who are setting out on longer adventures.)

It is stylish as heck. If you’re a fashionable human, you’ll love this sleek look.

  • Carry-on approved and makes for a great everyday backpack.
  • Next level day-to-day organization.
  • Comfortable shoulder straps with a sternum strap.
  • Strong security, especially the RFID safe pocket.
  • The cord pass-through is a fantastic idea.
  • Lifetime warranty.
  • Laptop sleeve fits a 15″ laptop.
  • No waist straps on the NOMATIC Backpack. Maybe I’m just used to traveling with a traditional backpack with traditional backpack straps (and the usual sternum strap), but I feel like some basic waist straps could come in handy here.
  • Unjustifiably expensive for an everyday backpack.
  • Not ideal for one-bag travel.
  • Not suitable for long walks or treks.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Overview

Nomatic Travel Pack

If you’re a light packer, you could push it to a week. The NOMATIC Travel Pack shares a bunch of features with the other backpacks, but it has some unique features that make it well-suited to a weekend away, including a nifty shoe compartment separate from the main compartment, and top access points.

The NOMATIC Travel Pack also gets the carry-on tick of approval. It fits under the plane seat perfectly. When you’re traveling, it’s always nice to have a bit of extra space. The Nomatic Travel Pack is a very compact 20L at its smallest size, but you can expand it to 30L when you’re carrying more travel gear.

The NOMATIC Travel Pack is also built for city travelers who zip around public transit in style, not for hikers or trekkers. There’s no real harness system here. The design is sleek and minimalist, so if you’re a design nerd, you’ll love it.

If you’re also a digital nomad who doesn’t need a whole lot of space in the main compartment for extra travel gear except for a laptop, the NOMATIC Travel Pack is a great option. Not so much if you’re a photographer or videographer.

  • The NOMATIC Travel Pack meets global carry-on requirements.
  • The expandable system adds a very generous 10L to the capacity of the main compartment. This is great if you accidentally buy a few too many gifts on your trip.
  • Hyper-organized for stress-free travel.
  • Comfy backpack straps with a sternum strap.
  • The NOMATIC Travel Pack has waist straps.
  • Magnetic water bottle pocket.
  • Thanks to a perimeter zipper, the mesh divider in the NOMATIC Travel Pack acts as an additional pocket in expanded-mode, so it keeps everything extra organized.
  • Excellent security. Again, the RFID pocket is genius. Lifetime guarantee.
  • Laptop sleeve fits a 16″ laptop.
  • The laptop sleeve isn’t easy to access on the go.
  • For me, the NOMATIC Travel Pack is an awkward size. I can usually get away with taking a regular commuter backpack for a weekend away. Do you really need this pack for such a short trip? The NOMATIC Travel Pack is just not different enough from the NOMATIC Backpack.

NOMATIC Travel Bag Overview

NOMATIC 40L Travel Bag

Again, this backpack comes with many of the same features as the smaller iterations, but it also adds a bunch more. There’s space for everything, even an underwear compartment separate from the main compartment, and a bag for laundry (but only with the 40L bag).

Both the 30L and 40L options are carry-on sized. They fit snugly under an airline seat, but the 40L is better in the overhead. You can also quickly alter the shoulder straps to go from backpack mode to duffel mode.

This bag isn’t for long-term travelers who travel with a lot of stuff. And while the main compartment is roomy, it’s not ideal for photographers for videographers. If you’re carrying camera gear or other photography tech gear, you may want to try to check out the WANDRD PRVKE .

Who is this NOMATIC bag for, then? Long-term travelers who are masters of packing light. Laptop-based digital nomads. Airport/bus station/train station to hostel-style travelers. In my opinion, it’s the most functional and most impressive of all the NOMATIC bags.

  • Carry-on approved. It’s unusual to find a 40L bag that easily meets global carry-on rules, so this is a huge plus.
  • Superb organization. The shoe compartment, magnetic water bottle pocket, tablet sleeve/tablet pocket, and bag for laundry are outstanding details that solve the worst packing problems.
  • Comfy shoulder straps with sternum strap.
  • It has a hip belt with pockets!
  • Like all the NOMATIC bags, the security is excellent.
  • This bag tries to do too much in a small amount of space. It feels cluttered.
  • The backpack straps to duffel bag strap transition is a little clunky.
  • It’s a wide backpack, so when you switch from backpack mode to duffel bag mode, you have to hold the straps too far from your body. This makes it a pretty cumbersome experience.
  • The laptop sleeve/laptop compartment is buried, so it’s hard to access it quickly. It can also make it hard to close the bag if your laptop is bigger than 13 inches.
  • If you have a long torso, the waist straps sit at your stomach rather than your hips. This can be very uncomfortable.

NOMATIC Travel Bag Specs:

NOMATIC Review: Shared Features

Each NOMATIC backpack has a lot of features in common, but they’re made for very different types of travelers. I’ll go through what they all have in common, and then I’ll break down the key differences for each travel pack.

Innovative Stow-Away Strap System

Every NOMATIC backpack allows you to snap away the shoulder straps when you don’t need them. This is an excellent option if you ever want to check your NOMATIC backpack for a flight. The snap-away shoulder straps system also lets you hold the bag by its side handles without the hassle of dangling straps.

Retractable Key Leash

Both the NOMATIC Backpack and the NOMATIC Travel Pack have a retractable key leash, which is a fantastic feature for serial key-losers. You can easily keep your keys in one place. Simply hook your keys on to the in-built retractable key leash and pull it out whenever you need to unlock your door.

I know a retractable key leash seems like a basic concept, but you’ll never fumble around for your keys again!

Magnetic Water Bottle Pockets

The NOMATIC Backpack and the NOMATIC Travel Pack both come with a magnetic water bottle pocket. It’s perfect if you’re paranoid about water leaking all over your laptop.

Personally, water bottle pockets are important for me—I can’t imagine not having hydration while on the go. But a pocket is also not as accessible as your typical water bottle holder, so keep that in mind.

Cord Pass-Through

If you’re still on the wired headphones, you can keep your phone in your bag and run the headphone cord through the cord pass through. It also makes for easy charging. This is especially good if you’re low on juice in a public place where you want to keep your phone and other gadgets secured.

Roller Bag Sleeve

If you’re traveling with a rolling suitcase, it always pays to bring an extra bag with you. It’s all the more convenient if you can loop the extra backpack over the roller bag handle. Every NOMATIC backpack has a purpose-built sleeve so you can do just that without having to do any on-the-spot bag engineering.

Waist Straps

Unlike the smaller backpacks, the NOMATIC Travel Bag and the NOMATIC Travel Pack has adjustable waist straps. They’re an excellent addition to a purpose-built bag. You really need that extra back support if you’re walking a fair distance with all your travel gear. The waist straps are thick and well-padded. They have built-in zippered pockets, too.

A Ridiculous Amount of Pockets

nomatic travelpack pockets

Here are all the different types of pockets that all of the NOMATIC packs have.

Laptop Sleeve/Laptop Compartment

A laptop sleeve/laptop compartment is pretty much mandatory these days. NOMATIC is on top of all the current must-haves in backpacking, so it goes without saying that all three backpacks come with a laptop compartment. You can expect to fit a 13” laptop in each NOMATIC backpack.

Quick Access Fleece-Lined Pocket for Breakables and Valuables

It’s important to have a safe place for your expensive possessions. Each NOMATIC backpack has a soft, fleece-lined pocket that will keep your valuables intact and scratch-free. It’s super easy to access, too.

RFID-Blocking and Lockable Pocket

NOMATIC has thought long and hard about keeping gear secure. Each NOMATIC backpack has a theft-proof pocket that you can lock. It’s also lined with RFID blocking material, so you don’t have to worry about someone skimming your card through your bag. An RFID safe pocket is a must for any digital nomad.

Hardshell Pocket to Store Glasses

Sunglasses are the number one thing I break or lose when I’m traveling. It’s just so hard to find a good place to store them. Those cases you get at the optometrist don’t hold up to the demands of travel either.

NOMATIC has solved this dilemma for you with a built-in sunglasses case. Every NOMATIC backpack has a sunglasses case pocket protected by the hardshell where you can stash your shades.

Notebook Pocket

Have you ever had a notebook and thought, “I wish I had a pocket for this notebook?”

Yeah, neither have I.

Somebody at NOMATIC did, though. They’ve put a purpose-built notebook pocket in each travel pack. I am not convinced that a notebook pocket is something anybody needs, but an extra pocket is always good to have. Maybe you’ll need to frantically scribble down the email address of the person you just met in the hostel. Who knows?

Hidden Pocket for Valuables

NOMATIC does bag security very well. As well as the RFID blocking pocket, each NOMATIC backpack has a hidden pocket where you can store even more valuables. It’s the perfect place to stash your gold and Swiss passports.

That’s a quick rundown of the features each travel pack has in common; now, I’ll dive into the key differences.

NOMATIC Backpack vs NOMATIC Travel Bag vs NOMATIC Travel Pack

These three NOMATIC bags are super versatile and include plenty of organization options. They’re all made for very different travelers, though. Next up in this backpack review we’ll discuss some of the differences between all three backpacks.

NOMATIC Backpack

  • Simplicity. Simplicity is what the NOMATIC Backpack is really all about. It doesn’t have the super technical features of the NOMATIC Travel Pack or Travel Bag. It’s more basic than the others, so it’s ideal as an everyday backpack or day bag for short trips.

NOMATIC Travel Pack

  • Shoe Compartment . Shoes are disgusting things if you think about it; you really don’t want them near your fresh clothes in the main compartment. It’s always a hassle to find a place to store shoes when you’re on a trip, but not with the NOMATIC Travel Pack. The NOMATIC Travel Pack has a section separate from the main compartment where you can slip your shoes in.
  • Zippered Mesh Divider . The mesh divider in the main compartment seems pretty useless at first, but once you expand the NOMATIC Travel Pack, it all makes sense. When you expand the bag, it adds a whole lot of depth to the main compartment. The perimeter zipper around the mesh divider can be used to create a new pocket.

NOMATIC Travel Bag

  • Underwear Pocket . There is a special pocket to keep your underwear. I really like this feature when I get into my accommodation late and just want to grab the basics without unpacking my whole bag.
  • Hip Belt. This bag comes with a padded hip belt with a pocket to stash your phone or other valuables!
  • Ventilated Shoe Pocket . If you’ve ever experienced stinky shoe shame (don’t pretend you haven’t), then you’ll love this feature. If you’re prone to smelly feet, it’s super unpleasant if you have to stash your shoes with your clean clothes. Somewhat like the extra compartment on the NOMATIC Travel Pack, this backpack lets you keep everything separate with a shoe pocket. It comes with ventilation holes too, so you can let those kicks breathe.
  • Use it in Backpack Mode or as a Duffel Bag . Sometimes it’s easier to carry it like a duffel bag when traveling short distances. With the Travel Bag, you can quickly snap away the waist and backpack straps and carry it by the additional duffel bag straps.
  • Laundry Bag . It comes with a removable mesh bag that you can hook over a door. The days of stuffing all your dirty clothes into a disintegrating plastic bag are done.

What Materials Are the NOMATIC Bags Made Of?

The NOMATIC bags are all made from extra-durable tarpaulin. The stitching is reinforced too, so these bags can take a beating.

They’re all water-resistant, well, sort of. Here’s the strange part: the back panels are made of ballistic weave. This material doesn’t have any water resistance whatsoever, and can potentially leak through to the main compartment.

The lack of water resistance seems like a strange decision, especially for the NOMATIC Travel Bag. If you’re using it as a duffel bag, you set the bag down on the back panel. But if you accidentally drop it in a puddle, you can say bye-bye to dry possessions.

This seems like a pretty significant oversight. Especially because water resistance is one of the key selling points of this bag.

Aesthetics: How Does it Look?

A major point of difference with the NOMATIC backpacks compared to other backpacks is their sleek, modern design. The boxy simplicity reminds me of the Tortuga Outbreaker , or the Peak Design Travel Bag (you can read a full comparison here ).

They only come in black. If you want something more vibrant, you’ll need to look elsewhere. I personally love black. It’s timeless and doesn’t get dirty. They also look very professional, so these bags can double as something you can take to work.

Nomatic Backpack and Travel Bag

If you don’t like the look of bright, traditional backpacks and you like to be stylish but low-key, the NOMATIC backpacks are a great option for you.

Comfort: Is it Easy to Wear?

The NOMATIC bags are pretty comfortable to wear, with well padded shoulder straps and a sternum strap. But, the harness system (or lack of a harness system, really) on each is very basic. They’ve got nothing on a traditional trekking backpack. However, this is not what the bags are for. They’re designed to be worn between hostels and bus stations or airports like an everyday backpack, so they don’t need a whole lot of extra support.

Due to their bigger size, the NOMATIC Travel Pack and the Travel Bag come with detachable hip straps to add a little extra support to your back. They are well-padded and durable. However, if you have a long torso, the straps sit at your stomach rather than your hips, so that can be a bit uncomfortable. But they are detachable, so simply remove them if they don’t work.

The backpack’s back panel is made of ballistic material. While it does nothing to stop water from getting in, it does a decent job of absorbing back sweat.

And if you travel, you know how annoying back sweat is.

Organization: How Does it Stack Up?

The organization that NOMATIC bags offer is their biggest draw in my opinion. NOMATIC backpacks are some of the best in the world for organization freaks!

All three bags offer more compartments and pockets than you could ever dream of. The compartment for shoes and the pocket in the NOMATIC Travel Pack and NOMATIC Travel Bag are great details. There’s nothing worse than having to stuff your dirty, stinky shoes in with your clean clothes in the main compartment.

The many pockets and water bottle holder of the NOMATIC Travel Pack

The extra bag for laundry in the NOMATIC Travel Bag is a game changer too! The only problem with the bag is that it’s made from mesh. If your clothes are particularly stinky, they might spread their stench onto your clean clothes. You may want to wrap your clothes up in plastic too. But if that’s the case, you may as well wash your clothes.

The sunglasses case/glasses case is another really cool feature. I’m constantly losing and/or breaking sunglasses while I’m on a trip because I never have anywhere to keep them. The purpose-made pocket has solved a major problem for me.

I also appreciate that they all incorporate an anti-theft secure pocket, as well as a hidden one. It’s pretty hard these days to travel without any valuables or technology at all. However, thieves are getting better at thievin’ our precious possessions, so the extra layers of security are excellent for peace-of-mind.

The designers at NOMATIC thought of everything when it comes to organization. It’s almost like they were showing off for the sake of it. In many ways, the bags try to do too much with too little space. Bottom line, they often feel clunky, but organized nevertheless.

Durability: Will a NOMATIC Backpack Last?

Each NOMATIC travel pack is extremely durable. They’re made from water-resistant material and have reinforced stitching. This makes them almost indestructible.

For general travel use, your NOMATIC backpack should see you through to old age. Even if they don’t, they come with a lifetime warranty, so the company will fix any issues for you, provided you didn’t throw your bag into a geyser or something.

Admittedly, they won’t hold up to the challenge of a tough hike through the Himalayas. But that’s definitely not what they’re made for. You’d be facing more serious problems than a hole in your backpack if you tried to climb Everest with a NOMATIC Travel Pack (for example).

Price: How Much Does a NOMATIC Backpack Cost?

The price tag is certainly high for these bags. They are outstanding quality and well-designed though, so you really do get what you pay for.

Personally, for a small, everyday backpack, I think the NOMATIC Backpack is overpriced. However, the travel-oriented backpacks (the NOMATIC Travel Pack and the Travel Bag) are reasonably priced for what they can achieve. You’d be paying around the same price for an Osprey of similar functionality; however, you’d be using it for different purposes.

The kicker is the cost of shipping. The shipping cost is high if you’re buying a NOMATIC Travel Pack, Bag, or Backpack outside of the United States.

Warranty: What Kind of Warranty Comes With the NOMATIC Backpack and Travel Bag?

All NOMATIC products come with a lifetime warranty. They will repair anything that becomes defective or non-functioning due to normal wear-and-tear or a production issue. They do not repair cosmetic wear.

The customer has to pay for shipping costs back to the factory, but NOMATIC covers all the repair costs. So even if you accidentally tear a big hole in your NOMATIC Travel Pack, they’ll take care of it. They also send the bag back to you free of charge. If it’s beyond repair, they will replace the whole bag for you.

Shipping: Does NOMATIC Ship Their Backpacks and Travel Bags Internationally?

NOMATIC ships their bags to every country in the world (except war zones). But NOMATIC is not very upfront about their shipping costs. Unlike other travel pack companies that have really clear grids for shipping costs, you have to dig around a lot on their website to find out how much you’ll pay.

I saved you from doing the hard work by plugging in some random addresses from around the world. When I saw the shipping prices, I realized why NOMATIC hides them away!

For many regions in the world, the shipping costs are insanely expensive. In a world dominated by free or cheap shipping, they would turn almost everyone off from buying a NOMATIC bag.

Here’s what I found.

Standard shipping prices for Canada, Europe, and the UK are $15-$30. That seems reasonable!

I then looked at shipping prices for Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. If you live in the Asia Pacific, you will be paying $100+ for shipping alone. It’s barely worth it when you’re already paying over $250 for the bag itself.

But wait, it gets worse. If you’re in Mexico or somewhere in Latin America, you’ll pay around $250 in shipping costs. That’s crazy!

I have no idea what NOMATIC’s distribution channels are, but these costs are outrageous. Nobody in their right mind would pay that much for shipping. This is something that Nomatic really needs to work on. I bet they miss out on a lot of sales because of this.

NOMATIC Backpack Accessories

There is a range of accessories specially designed for each NOMATIC backpack.

Toiletry Bag 2.0

Nomatic Toiletry Bag

It comes with a hook so you can hang it over the bathroom door or towel rail. The small bag is $49.99, and the regular is $69.99. I’ve got a toiletry bag that looks exactly the same, and I bought it for $10.

Packing Cube

Nomatic Packing Cube

They’re $29.99 each, and that’s fairly reasonable.

Shirt Organizer

Nomatic Shirt Organizer

Laundry Bag

They’re also $29.99 too, which isn’t too bad.

NOMATIC Backpack Review Summary: My Final Thoughts

There has been a lot of chatter about the NOMATIC Travel Pack, Backpack, and Travel Bag. They’re supposed to change the game of backpacking.

Now, don’t get me wrong, they are great products.

The bags are all very robust, high-quality, and well-thought-out.

And sure, each NOMATIC backpack has tons of features. The NOMATIC backpack is a dream backpack for people who love to be super-organized, but are they the be-all and end-all?

I don’t think so.

Inside the main compartment of the NOMATIC Travel Pack

In my opinion, and as I’ve mentioned several times in this NOMATIC travel bag review, these bags come across as over-designed. When you’re researching NOMATIC bags, the features are very appealing. When you dig down, you can’t help but doubt if some of those features are even beneficial.

It’s important to remember that the more features you cram into a small space, the more clunky and heavier the travel pack becomes.

On top of that, the price tag is very high. This is particularly true if you’re based in the Asian Pacific or Latin America, and you have to pay those astronomical shipping rates.

The NOMATIC products fit in a strange space in the cosmos of bags. They do too much for a short vacation, but they don’t provide enough space (or back support) for a serious backpacking journey.

So, while they look nice and have a laundry list of features, the bottom line is they aren’t perfect. I honestly think they’re better for traveling professionals and digital nomads who need a well-organized carry-on bag.

Hi Jeremy, thanks for this review, super helpful 🙂

Do you happen to know anything about Nomatic’s materials sourcing? In terms of environmental sustainability and labor chain? I’m hunting info on that before I make a purchase

Regards, Paul

Hey Paul—that’s a great question, and one I’d actually love some more info on, myself. If you happen to find any info, please keep us updated!

Reads like an add. The fact that ebags sells comparable bags for less than $100 should be noted.

Thanks for the insight! If someone is looking for a $100 bag, they probably won’t be reading this article 🙂

Very useful review, but the company has the worst customer support service ever. Ordered a backpack two weeks ago, still no shipment nor answer from them. They don’t even reply. No phone number. It’s basically a scam. And think you should mention this in your review.

The Nomatic Travel Pack is PERFECT You If…

You want a 2-in-1 extendable backpack . This pack can be used both as a 20L day or commuter backpack or it can be extended and turned into a 30L overnight/weekend pack.

You want a laptop compartment. The Nomatic travel pack has a 15” laptop compartment located on the inside of the pack. If this is something you value then bingo!

You value organisational options. All of the Nomatic packs really shine when it comes to organisation. Everything has its own place and there are loads of zip and mesh pockets dotted all over the pack. Therefore if you like to travel neat and tidy then this pack may be for you. Fellow OCD heads unite!

The Nomatic Travel Pack is NOT For You If…

You need a big backpack . When extended, the Nomatic Travel Pack offers 30L of storage. That is enough for a weekend break or maybe a week if you are a seriously minimalist light packer.

If this is you then check out either the Nomatic 40L Travel Bag or one of their full-blown suitcase/luggage models like the Nomatic Navigator or the awesome Nomatic Check In .

You are on a tight budget. Coming in at $300 this pack is not cheap. In fact, $300 is actually quite expensive for a 30L backpack. Whilst it may well justify the price tag, it does nevertheless exclude those who are short on funds.

You’re looking for a camera-specific bag. Whilst this bag will fit some photography gear in, the clever folks at Nomatic have designed a bag specifically designed for camera gear in collaboration with Pete Mckinnon that is better suited for keeping your expensive gear safe.

The Nomatic Travel Pack at a Glance

The original and maybe best Nomatic backpack , the Travel Pack is an adaptable backpack that converts from 20 to 30L meaning it can be used either as a day pack or as a small travel pack. It is well made, stylish and has some lovely, innovative features.

Looking for something smaller? Have a look at the Nomatic Messenger Bag , it’s a great stand-alone pack if you want to travel super light or a good addition to this bag if you need extra space for valuables.

Word Up Funsters – In case you get to the end of this review and don’t quite think that the Nomatic Travel Pack is for you, then note that Nomatic also offers 2 similar packs; the 40L Nomatic Travel Bag and the 20 – 24L Nomatic Backpack.

We have written a full  Nomatic Travel Bag review as well as a Nomatic Backpack review . On the other hand, if you’re looking for something bigger and more like a suitcase, have a look at the Nomatic Carry On Pro instead.

Let’s now take a detailed look at the main features of the Nomatic Travel Pack.

Aesthetics & Material

The Nomatic brand really does have a strong brand identity and all of their packs fit a certain, in-house style. The Travel Pack like other Nomatic offerings has a simple, classy almost minimal look that helps it to blend in equally well in the airport lounge, the office or the gym. Some critics find the design too ‘boxy’ and austere but that’s all subjective.

The main material is some form of tarpaulin material. It feels kind of rubbery but pleasant to the touch and offers a good level of water resistance which is a real plus.

Storage Capacity

nomatic travel pack 14l vs 20l

Ok, listen up because this is important. As we said earlier, what makes this pack unique and special is that it is extendable. It’s default setting is 20L but it can be extended to accommodate 30L of glorious travel junk.

The expansion works simply by “zipping down” the pack using a zip located right slap bang in the middle of the pack. And when you have finished using it as 30L, you can simply zip it back up.

In case you don’t know, 20L is generally suitable for day use and 30L suitable for overnight and weekend use.

Size, Weight & Fit

As this pack is extendable, the size of it does change accordingly. At full mast (ie, unzipped to 30L mode) the size is 18.5 in x 12 in x 9.5 in (47 x 30.5 x 24.1 cm) which is kind of standard size for 30L packs. In case you are wondering, it is within the acceptable “carry on” requirements for all but the most miserly of airlines. It easily fits into the overhead compartment and even fits under most airline seats when compressed to its 20L mode.

As for weight, it remains constant no matter which size and capacity mode is being invoked. Weighing in at 4.16 lb (1.9 kg)  it is heavy for a 20L pack and even weighty for a 30L pack. As such this ain’t a pack you want to take hiking or carry up hills on hot afternoons too often.

In terms of carrying, the pack is well fitted to suit an average man’s torso. The shoulder straps are adaptable and there is a harness hip belt which you may wish to use if you fully pack it at 30L. Note that pack also has an adaptable handle meaning that it can be carried like a suitcase too.

Main Compartment

nomatic travel bag

Where Nomatic packs really shine is in their organisational potential. Nomatic boasts that this pack has a “space for everything” and it’s not a bad assessment.

The main compartment pack opens up in a clamshell style which means you can lay it out flat and pack/unpack it like a suitcase – as opposed to the standard “top access” you get with backpacks. The main compartment has a generous amount of room for putting clothes, shoes or whatever else you can fit in there.

Below the main compartment are two zip mesh pockets which fit small bits and pieces such as chargers.

Then, there are four mesh pockets on the sides of the main compartment which you can pop other little bits and pieces into – the size perfectly accommodates a sunglasses case and by the way, the Nomatic Travel Pack actually comes with a free sunglasses case in case that swings it for you!

Other Compartments

Nomatic Travel Pack

One of the best features of this pack is the laptop compartment.

It is located on the reverse side of the inside side of the pack (the part that rests on your back ). When you zip open the clamshell to access the main compartment, the laptop case will fold down. The compartment opens and closes securely with a zip and comes with enough padding to keep your precious device safe from a few knocks. It will fit laptops up to 15” which is a bummer if you are one of those rare beasts who still uses a 17”.

So what else do we have? Well on the outer side of the pack the flap zips open to reveal 4 more mesh pockets, a bottom pocket, and then some inside pockets on the inside of the flap. I don’t know about you, but you can never have enough pockets in my opinion!

But that’s not it, there is also a small secret zipper pocket situated on the backside of the pack. The pocket is super hard to access but that is the whole point of it – it’s a secret compartment and therefore useful for hiding passports, credit cards and cash!

Quality and Longevity

Nomatic gear is not cheap so buyers have every right to expect high quality and some longevity.

The main material is tarpaulin which offers a good level of water resistance. It feels quite thick and hard-wearing (which does make the pack on the heavier side of things) but it is definitely not scuff proof and I can foresee the pack taking a few scratches after a few months of use.

The zips and zip lining are zoom zippers which are of a very high quality.

The other Nomatic packs we have owned are in great condition after years of use and we fully expect this one to perform just as well. In fact, Nomatic even offers a pretty strong Lifetime Warranty that guarantees against manufacturer defects.

Price and Value For Money

The Nomatic Travel Pack is $300. That is quite a lot for a 20L or a 30L pack.

Still, we do feel that the chunky price tag is justified. The Nomatic brand pride itself on making innovative, high-quality travel gear that offers heaps of awesome features.

Basically, if you feel you will make use of the pack’s features such as the clamshell opening, the extendability, the laptop compartment and all the little organisation pockets, then you will probably get your money’s worth.

If you will not make the most of these features then there are more cost-effective alternatives out there for you.

Also, keep in mind that this pack comes with a lifetime guarantee – and $300 is not really bad for a travel bag for life now is it?! I mean, you can’t beat a 10p Tesco bag for life in terms of value but they are somewhat lacking in features compared to the Nomatic!

nomatic travel pack 14l vs 20l

As we have seen, the Nomatic Travel pack is a unique extensible travel pack. It can be used as a 20L daypack or a 30L overnight or weekend bag . It is made from high-quality materials, has lots of storage options and even comes with a laptop compartment.

It is not a cheap travel pack and it is not ideal for everybody. Still, it has a very unique space in the travel gear-o-sphere and has earned itself a lot of fans… including us.

Looking for some accessories to match you’re new shiny bag? Have a look at the Nomatic wallet that fits perfectly in the secret pocket. Also, check out the Nomatic toiletries bag , it’s one of the best on the market and continues the company’s line of excellent travel products.

Nomatic 20L Travel Pack review: Compelling versatility and innovative design

nomatic travel pack 14l vs 20l

Many of us love to travel. The challenge though is figuring out exactly what you need without overpacking – not to mention, having the correct luggage for the occasion. Recently, I ran into this exact situation. Fortunately, there is Nomatic with their innovative design and packing versatility.

The Dilemma:

The packing dilemma… we’ve all been there. Mine is an eight-day work trip, two stops, temperatures ranging from low 40’s to mid 70’s with some rain forecasted. However, I really don’t want to check a bag. Now, fitting all the clothing I need into a carry-on bag is challenging enough, but I also need to bring my laptop, other work materials, and reading for the plane. Not to mention I know I’ll be bringing materials and resources back with me.

The Nomatic Travel Pack 20L (also available in 14L) is for everyday use and for 1-3 day trips. I am super pumped to pair this with my traditional carry-on luggage to stretch capacity and avoid having to check a bag. The Travel Pack resembles a backpack, yet functions as a work bag and/or an extra carry-on as well. The Nomatic Travel Pack combines the best of a travel bag and traditional luggage. It offers both full-zippered front access and clamshell-style opening. I am leaning pretty heavily on using it for lugging my work stuff and laptop for the trip.

I finish packing my carry-on bag, and try to put my remaining items that didn’t fit into the Nomatic Travel Pack – along with all my work gear and plane entertainment. Huh. It doesn’t fit quiet right. I try shuffling things around a little bit but it still doesn’t seem right. I’m a little disappointed. The Travel Pack has plenty of pockets, but it has a slightly ridged structure and formed shape that doesn’t bend and bulge like a traditional cloth backpack. So far, it seems like a very rigid backpack with some cool pockets and features. Oh, how wrong my first impression is.

The Breakthrough:

A little reorganizing, and both my carry-on bag and the Travel Pack are arranged with a little space to spare. I’m actually pleased with how it turns out, and am impressed with the layout and accessibility of the Travel Pack. When I get to the airport, I breeze through security with minimal shuffling of items. The TSA-approved fold-down laptop pocket is convenient for scanning. It is just as easy to access the pocket and slip the laptop out for separate screening. Amazingly, I clear security and arrive at my gate before my wife can make the 15-minute drive back to our house!

What I love (yes, I’m beginning to fall in love with this Travel Pack ) is how the internal pocket structure allows me to conveniently access my items. I grab a charging cord, my book, and other items effortlessly without having to rummage around or take other objects out first. Additionally, I simply turn the bag sideways and slip it onto my carry-on handle for easy mobility through the airport. Even with all the jostling, my items stay in place and undamaged. There is just about a place for anything – cord pass-throughs, pockets designed for everything, and even a hidden compartment.

For the next several days I tote the Travel Pack around to all my meetings. It is a little bigger than I might normally use for a work setting, but is completely acceptable for the nature of my trip. (The 14L might be more fitting for this purpose). Plus, it held everything I could need for the day – computer, books, pens, chargers, water bottle, jacket – with room to spare. And unlike a traditional backpack, the formed profile is sleek and subtle, even when not fully packed.

After 5 nights in my first hotel, I have another flight and three days and two nights to go before my journey home. As I pack my carry-on luggage and realize that I’ll have to put my remaining clean clothes with my… well, let’s just say not so clean clothes. (I just had to workout three times in the hotel gym – smh.) I glance over at my Travel Pack – will this really work?

The Conversion:

The Nomatic Travel Pack has a mesh zipper dividing the main compartment for packing clothes and has the ability to open clamshell-style like a traditional luggage bag. It also has an expanding zipper for an additional 50% volume. This allows me to pack my clean clothes for the remainder of the trip separately.

Boarding my next flight I am a little nervous. Its overbooked, and they are stripping people of their larger carry-ons and checking them planeside. Here I am waltzing up with essentially two full carry-ons. However, the shape of the Travel Pack keeps it from looking like a vagabond’s backpack that’s about to burst at the seams. Despite my hesitation, to the eyes of the steward it appears I have a carry-on and a reasonable personal item. He waves me through.

Since the flight is overbooked, I politely stow my carry-on overhead and put my Travel Pack under the seat. (Friendly tip: don’t be that person that uses up all the overhead space on a crowded flight when one of your bags can fit under the seat!) I am surprised at how well it fits under my seat compared to other bags I’ve used in the past. I even have plenty of room for my size 12 feet. I’m officially convinced, (and hooked). At this point it is hard for me to imagine traveling in the future without the Nomatic Travel Pack .

Additional Options:

Nomatic also makes a full line of similar quality and equally innovative luggage and camera bags. The Check-In offers 78L – 90L of space if you are looking for traditional luggage. (I personally like the deep olive color.) I love the durable polycarbonate design for a virtually indestructible case. The three-stage aluminum handle, low profile side handles, silent Hinomoto wheels, and TSA locking YKK zippers make traversing airports a breeze. However, the innovative magnetic compression straps for easy packing is clutch. They allow me to compress what I want, making packing that much more convenient to fit my personal needs.

Nomatic also offers Packing Cubes (large, medium, and small) for further convenience in packing and organization. They even have collapsible Sling (4L) and Tote (25L) for greater flexibility to adjust to my traveling style. Everything that Nomatic offers exhibit the same attention to detail, durable quality, and stylish and sleek design.

The Final Word:

The Nomatic Travel Pack combines the best of a travel bag and traditional luggage. It offers both full-zippered front access and clamshell-style opening. With over twenty innovative features, magnetic side pockets, and tech organization, it combines everything you want or need in a pack with all the convenience of a traditional carry-on bag! I love the versatility, and engineered durable construction and water-resistant material. Traveling is rough on bags and possessions, but with Nomatic products I never have to worry. The Nomatic Travel Pack truly carries like a backpack, yet packs like luggage!

The Nomatic Backpack: Our Honest Review

In this Nomatic backpack review, we test the Nomatic pack over a few months as an everyday backpack, and on several trips.

If you’re looking for an everyday backpack, this Nomatic pack is sleek, with a minimalist-like design is packed with features and plenty of pockets.

The classic Nomatic backpack we tested is small at only 20 litres, though it does expand to 24 litres.

Nomatic Backpack Review

  • plenty of pockets
  • sleek, stylish design
  • great for organizing electronics
  • the snaps are hard to snap strap for hiding straps in suitcase mode
  • too small for use as a practical travel carry-on at 20-24 litres

Buy it at Nomatic

  • Weight: 4 lbs
  • Dimensions: 18.5″ x 12″ x 5″ (7.5″ expanded).
  • Volume: 20 l (24 l expanded)

Since the Nomatic backpack is only 20 L (and expands to 24 L), it’s made for daily use, rather than as a carry on pack for longer trips.

The Nomatic backpack could work as an overnight bag if you travel extremely light, love plenty of packets, and don’t carry large items.

Pockets and Organization

The backpack has many pockets and sections that are perfect for gadgets and items of various size, and the padded laptop sleeve has easy access for better convenience at the airport.

There’s a front pocket that zips completely open, allowing full access. There’s plenty of room in there for cables, chargers, and other odds and ends.

There’s a small, easy access pocket on top of the backpack that’s perfect for storing things you need to access quickly, like a passport, wallet, or phone.

There’s a power cord pass-through, which is handy if you plan to listen to music or use a power bank for your phone and other mobile devices.

The interior, largest compartment opens up like a suitcase. There’s a padded laptop sleeve, plus another large pocket that we found was perfect for our Kindle .

When compared to other minimalist backpacks for every day use, the Nomatic backpack can fit quite a lot of items.

Materials and construction

The materials and construction seem to be pretty sturdy. I’t made with durable construction and resilient, waterproof materials. Its zippers won’t easily be deteriorated, and the straps will stay comfortable, even if you’re hauling a heavier load.

Other Nomatic backpack features

Here is a quick glimpse at some of the Nomatic backpack’s other features:

Using the Nomatic backpack for travel

I used my Nomatic backpack as a personal item on my last flight.

At an official size of 18.5″ x 12″ x 5″ (7.5″ expanded) it’s just a hair larger than most personal item sizes. For example, United Airlines’ personal item size is 9″ x 10″ x 17″, while Air Canada’s personal item size is 6″ x 13″ x 17″.

The Nomatic backpack’s a bit larger than the official personal item size for United or Air Canada, but it’s pretty close. I flew with it on Air Canada on a domestic flight in Canada, and had no problem.

That said, I’ve never had a personal item checked for size in Canada or the US, but I always make sure my personal item isn’t obviously over size. That said, there’s always a first time.

Is the Nomatic backpack right for you?

The Nomatic backpack is a great choice as a day pack, a personal item when traveling, or minimalist overnight trips.

Is the Nomatic backpack for men or women?

Because this is a smaller pack, this pack seems to work equally well for men and women.

At a 5’5″ woman, it fit me well, and was tight and snug to my body, with comfortable straps.

Charles also tried it out for a few hours, and reported back it fit well. The straps were comfortable on his shoulders, and it looked in proportion to his size as well. He’s just shy of six feet tall.

Converting to briefcase mode

One cool feature of the Nomatic backpack is that it converts from backpack to briefcase mode, making it a great choice for business.

Here’s what the back of the pack looks like as a backpack.

To convert to briefcase mode, just undo the snaps at the top of the backpack straps.

Then, tuck away the backpack straps under the padded back of the backpack, and re-snap the snaps.

Viola! It’s in briefcase mode.

Looking for something bigger?

If you’re looking for a carry on size bag, the Nomatic travel bag comes in either a 30 liter (9 x 19 x 13) or as a 40 liter (9 x 21 x 14).

The Nomatic travel pack is a little smaller than the backpack with 20 liter that expands to 30 liter.

Nomatic also now sells rolling luggage. See their rolling luggage here .

About Nomatic

Nomatic is a brand that launched on Kickstarter, and aims to make functional travel gear. The company sells travel backpacks, duffles, travel wallets, and other travel gear.

See all of Nomatic’s gear here.

The bottom line

All in all, we’ve used the classic Nomatic backpack for a few months when we wrote this review.

It’s rapidly becoming my top choice for my everyday carry when I’m out and about. I’ll grab it, throw it in my laptop and go work in a cafe for the day. I’ve used it as my personal item when I’m traveling, or as a small electronics bag on a road trip.

As I keep using the pack of the next months, I’ll update with more information on how it’s holding up for durability.

Not quite what you’re looking for?

Here’s our Complete Guide to the Best Digital Nomad Backpacks.

More about the NOMATIC Backpack 20L

20 pockets all designed with purpose.

This feature of the NOMATIC Backpack 20L is one of its best. It has over 20 pockets , all with a specific purpose! That’s a lot of pockets, but it’s all perfectly designed to keep your items safe and secure. Plus, it’s water-resistant and has RFID protection for extra security.

It’s like a modern-day Mary Poppins bag! But instead of a carpet bag, it’s a laptop bag. And instead of being able to pull out a bed or a lamp, you can just pull out whatever you need from one of the 20 pockets . It’s like a little bag-within-a-bag, but it’s all connected.

Pro Tip: Be sure to keep track of all the pockets and their specific purposes , so you can easily find whatever you need! And if you’re ever in a pinch, try looking in the front and side pockets first. They’re usually the most accessible.

NOMATIC

Strong exterior and Waterproof

The NOMATIC 20L bag has a strong exterior that will protect your laptop and other items from outside elements like rain and water splashes. We all know how important it is to keep our tech safe, so this bag is the perfect way to do it!

The science behind this is actually pretty simple. The bag is made with a special material that helps repel water and prevent it from entering the bag and damaging your items. It also has a special RFID shielding fabric that helps keep your valuable items safe from scanning.

Pro tip – If you’re using the bag in rainy weather, make sure you keep all the zippers closed tight so that no water can get inside. That way, your tech and other items will stay safe and dry no matter what!

YKK Zippers

The NOMATIC Backpack is equipped with YKK Zippers , which offer superior durability and security. It’s like having an extra layer of protection to make sure your belongings stay safe.

The YKK zipper works by utilizing a double-tooth design . This unique design creates a locking mechanism, where the top tooth is engaged and the bottom tooth is disengaged. This means that the zipper won’t accidentally open, so your stuff stays safe.

Pro Tip : When zipping up your backpack, always make sure to tuck the zipper pull into the pouch . This prevents any accidental openings and helps your backpack stay secure.

Patent Pending Strap Design – Brief Case to Backpack Transition Smoothly

With the patent-pending strap design feature, the NOMATIC Backpack – Water-Resistant RFID Laptop Bag 20L – Updated 2020 V2 makes it easy to transition from a briefcase to a backpack in a snap!

So, no more awkwardly switching bags while you’re on the go – this bag has you covered.

What’s even better? It also features an adjustable and detachable sternum strap for extra stability and comfort.

But how does this all work? Well, the straps are designed with a special locking mechanism to make sure your bag stays secure and in place. This locking mechanism simply snaps into place when you’re carrying it as a briefcase or a backpack. It’s so easy to use – and you won’t have to worry about it coming loose.

Pro Tip : Make sure to adjust the straps to your perfect fit for the most comfortable and secure experience.

Full Perimeter Zipper for Access from All Sides

The latest feature, the full perimeter zipper for access from all sides , makes it even easier to get things done quickly. With this feature, you can access any item in the bag from any side in a flash.

No more rummaging around in the bottom of the bag to find that one item, as the NOMATIC Backpack is designed with a zipper that wraps around the entire bag, allowing you to access any item quickly and easily

This makes it ideal for those on the go and always in a hurry.

Pro Tip: Make sure to close the zipper completely after accessing items to ensure that your items stay secure!

Review and Score

Our score: 85/100.

I have been on the lookout for a great bag and I’m happy to say that NOMATIC Backpack – Water-Resistant RFID Laptop Bag 20L fits all my needs.

It has enough room for everyday carry items, is extremely lightweight yet very sturdy, and is water-resistant with 20 pockets in total including an expandable laptop pouch which can also house 15-inch laptops easily.

Plus, it features RFID-blocking technology to keep credit cards and other sensitive information safe from prying eyes.

All of this combined makes it one of the best backpacks out there right now.

The customer reviews are overwhelmingly positive too – people appreciate its combination of style, quality and space which make travel or daily commute so much easier without compromising safety as well as organization requirements.

My score would be 85/100 because while its construction might not be perfect (there are people complaining about zippers), but overall it’s an outstanding digital nomad backpack.
