Many people visualize living in America, but living in New York is more magical, than any dream. Even though, New York City is considered as the majority inhabited city in the United States, it is the best place one can ever want to visit. Taking a trip to New York City has been my dream since I was young. I had always wished to visit a place with tall buildings, and full of people. My dream of visiting New York City had come to life. I could not contain my excitement because; I would be a New Yorker, even if it was for a couple of days. Coming from a small town, I had never been exposed to such a large city like New York. My trip to New York was dream come true because, it was like discovering an entire new way of life from the one I lived. I had just won a trip to New York, after an exemplary performance in my school project. I did not sleep the night before my travel to New York. I woke up several times in the middle of my sleep, just to check the time. When morning arrived, I picked my bag, which I had packed a week ago. My stomach was doing flips as we headed to the airport because; I could not believe it was happening. I was overcome by an exhilarating feeling as I realized that, in a couple of hours, I will be in the most amazing and biggest city in the United States. My plane ride was torture because I had a bubbling anticipation to reach my destination. On my way to my hotel room, I was awestruck at the incredible sight I saw in New York City. Each street is crammed with amazing buildings, and a fantastic view. After freshening up, I got the chance to go inside some of the buildings for instance, the Empire State Building. I made my way to the top of the building, and I will never forget the fantastic view. Standing on top of one of the top stories of the Empire State Building, was breathtaking. I felt like holding the entire city in my hands from this awesome view. In addition, I could see the Ellis Island a distance away from the top of the Empire State Building. It was as if the little peaceful vicinity where I lived was magnified by 1000 to make up the speculate city of New York. I did not miss the chance of passing through the great Times Square on my way to the famous Fifth Avenue. I could not miss the opportunity to enjoy the excitement of Rockefeller Center. There were so many shops on Fifth Avenue, and the people were very good to me. New York has an array of restaurants with all the types of food one wishes to take. I got the chance of eating in a Chinese restaurant, and the food was amazing. The evening was here, and I had to go back to my town the next morning. I had dreamed of being in New York City, and my dream had come true and now it was time to say goodbye to my dream city. I took a number of photos for remembrance of my two day trip to New York City. I took a taxi back to the hotel in preparation for my flight back home. I felt bad while taking my flight but I was so happy that my dream to go to New York had come true and so, I boarded my plane smiling. My first trip to New York was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, one I will always treasure, and I am sure I will return some day. The implausible means of transportation, the huge skyscrapers and buildings, and all of the thousands of people made me anxious to work harder, get a scholarship, and perhaps move to an incredible city such as this one. Personal Narrative Essay: My Trip To New York

Have you ever planned something big that ended very poorly? Well that was exactly how it was for me during my trip to New York. Despite being heavily excited for the trip, I was met with a lot of challenges along the way. It has also taught me the wonders of getting out of your comfort zone and exploring new areas with different food, cultures, and opportunities. I am writing about this experience as a trip down memory lane, it may not have been the best of experiences but was definitely a trip to remember. Without further introduction, here is the story of my not so good trip to New York

It was a Monday morning, the birds were chirping, the stress of summer school had dissipated, and a train passing through the neighborhood had jolted me awake. I look at the clock and realize that I need to get dressed! I was rewarded with a well-deserved trip to New York after months of anticipation. We finally got on the road after I got dressed and put on my shoes. To get to the hotel in Newark, New Jersey, we would have had to drive for over eight hours.  However, the hotel we stayed at was about an hour away from New York, which likely meant we needed to stay the night in New Jersey. In addition, the hotel received a lot of negative feedback, with many people claiming that it was filthy and in a dangerous area. However, on the road journey, this was not our primary worry. Everything looked to be going smoothly when we crossed the border into the United States, but as we drove towards New Jersey, everything began to go wrong. 

As we were driving down the highway, listening to peaceful music, suddenly, I heard a huge pop! Our tire blew out! My father lost control of the wheel, but we were able to take back control of the steering after letting go of the gas pedal. We were able to rest at the side of the road. Fortunately, it was late at night on an empty highway, so our car was not damaged. In addition, we had spare tires in our large Toyota minivan and were able to get back on the road quickly. We were all fatigued after the previous event, so we decided to have some breakfast at Krispy Kreme. We enjoyed a fantastic brunch, complete with doughnuts and coffee. As we got back on the road I realized, I had forgotten my phone at the restaurant! As we were going straight back to the restaurant, I found my phone in my bag. It was there the entire time. To put it mildly, no one was pleased with me. Following that, the rest of the travel proceeded as planned.

We finally made it to the entrance of the hotel during the afternoon. However, the service at the hotel was subpar. It took us an hour of wait time in order to get our rooms. As exhausted as we were, we decided to spend the night at the hotel and go to the city in the morning. We were able to get past the fact that the rooms were particularly very dirty, and simply spent the night at the hotel. One issue that arose later was time. Our trip started at the beginning of September, a few days before school started. Meaning we had to do everything we could with the time we had. It was tough enough with the limited time we had. 

Finally, the next morning we got back on the road to drive to New York. The ride towards New York City was okay overall, until we were plagued by downtown New York’s terrible traffic. We had reserved parking spots for our car, however, when we got there the street was blocked off due to the influx of traffic. We were searching for a place to park for several hours until we finally found one. 

The trip itself was amazing. We attended a wax museum and saw many wax figures of celebrities , athletes, etc. We went to the Nike store and bought new shoes. However, as we were on our way back to our car after our excursion, several guys who were seemingly intoxicated were walking past us, one of them seemed very sick. He eventually threw up on the floor which got on my shoes. The people around him were seemingly apologetic, It did, however, make an already awful trip even worse.. We ended the week by staying around Times Square and had lunch from a pizzeria called Joe’s Pizza, which was in fact featured in the Spider-Man 2 (2004) movie. After, we went straight back to the hotel, repackaged all of our belongings, and went straight home.

In conclusion, the trip came to a close with many ups and downs due to the numerous disruptions that happened along the journey. Although it may not have been the finest of experiences, it provided us with the chance to not only travel to other destinations across the world but also to learn how to better organize our excursions and make the most of the time we had. It was a principle we treasured and took into account during all of our subsequent trips, resulting in them being far more pleasurable and successful. Despite the fact that the trip was primarily unsatisfactory, it provided me with the opportunity to see a city I had never been before and to allow me to step outside of my comfort zone and broaden my horizons.

I had often yearned to pay a visit to any one of the renowned cities in the world. Endowed with the spirit of adventure to explore the world, I kept looking forward to the day when the real opportunity would strike. Being a geography student, I had learnt much to do with history, demography, economic activities, and infrastructural developments of some world class cities.

When our Geography lecturer announced that we would have an academic trip by the end of the semester, I was extremely excited. The destination of our academic journey would land us in New York City. This was just incredible! I spent the remaining three weeks before the trip preparing myself in readiness for the journey. This was also going to be my first time to take a flight.

A day before the onset of the journey, I revisited the geographical details of the New York City. From my shorthand notes, I found out that the state of New York covers 141,300 square kilometers being one of the largest in United States of America. As a city, it has the highest population according to latest statistics. It acts as the administrative centre of New York State. As a progressed city, it has a global influence on commerce and socio-cultural aspects. It is usually named as New York City to avoid confusing it with the state of New York.

My first finding was that New York City is located in the north eastern part of United States of America. It is strategically positioned on the coastal stretch bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, the city has been subdivided into smaller units to ease administrative work. Of great interest was the fact that the city has the highest population among all the cities in United States. A remarkable man made feature next to New York City is Brooklyn Bridge. It is none of the most fascinating pathways in New York. It has a historical backing in the sense that is the first steel suspension bridge ever erected in the world. After here, we headed straight to the outstanding Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. This construction left us dumb founded being the greatest gothic church worldwide but still undergoing expansion. Thereafter, a visit to Chinatown revealed to us one of the magnificent Asian community’s establishments in United States.

The Times Square located in Broadway along the 42 nd and 50 th streets was another captivating sight. The flashing neon lights in the city symbolized the centre of theatric works. There were also several entertainment joints alongside shops and street artists.

Similar to the first day, we all set off to accomplish the remaining task as stipulated in the questionnaires. Our first destination was the World Trade Centre comprising of two tall and elegant twin towers. They are also the tallest twin skyscrapers in the world. Unfortunately, the tower was a victim of terrorist attack which claimed over two thousand five hundred lives. Eventually, we paid a visit to American Museum of Natural history located at Central park west. The curator was a young black American gentleman probably in his mid thirties. His vocal lyrical voice kept us awake and attentive throughout the weather guide session.

Meanwhile, I came to learn that this museum is most famous for its hosting of the remarkable dinosaur halls. There are also tens of millions of remains housed in this museum. There was so much to learn and share.

Just before we wound up the day, we visited the Statue of Liberty, the most outstanding symbolic representation of this city and the entire of America

This was a day to reckon with. On our way back to the hotel facility, we took uncountable photos at least to have the memory of the trip carried forward. We were to take our return flight that evening. The two days were too short and seemed like a drop in the ocean. However, this was a journey that significantly changed my perception to nature, as I ended up loving the subject more.

My Trip to New York City

The summer before my junior year in high school, my family and I took a trip to a completely new world. Being from a small town, I had never really been exposed to the elements of a large city such as New York City. My trip there was like discovering an entirely new way of life that I had only heard stories of previously. For about the tenth time the morning of the flight, I checked my room to make sure I didn’t leave anything essential behind. My stomach was doing flips as we arrived at the airport and made our way to the gate. It didn’t get much better than this: I watched through the window as the runway zoomed by and the buildings and houses became smaller and smaller as the plane gained altitude. An exhilarating feeling overcame me as I realized that I would soon be in one of the most amazing cities of the United States. As we stood waiting for a taxi outside of the airport, it was immediately apparent to me that New York City was not the same as New Caney, Texas. It seemed like everyone there was in a hurry to get to another place. The loud and constant sound of cars honking was heard throughout the entire trip. As soon as a car seemed to be going slower than the person behind him liked, he would hear the horn of that car to let him know that he was apparently holding everybody else up! When we found our hotel in Times Square, I noticed that it wasn’t just the cars that were in a hurry. Everyone in the streets was walking at a brisk pace that indicated a rush to be somewhere. The transportation of the city was also far different than anything that I had ever been exposed to. In my little town, a bike, a car, or even walking was perfectly suitable for getting around town, but in this foreign land, there were many more ways for one to get to another destination. Everywhere you looked, there were people hailing taxis, waiting on buses, rushing underground to the subway stations, walking frantically, or desperately trying to maneuver their own cars through the busy streets. Just standing and watching the many people rushing their own separate ways was an interesting observation. In addition to the people and transportation, the buildings were also an incredible sight. Each street was crammed with buildings that were built side by side with no room in between them, and a number of skyscrapers were present throughout the city as well. I was awestruck again as we went inside some of these buildings such as the Empire State Building and made our way towards the top. Standing outside of one of the top stories of the Empire State Building was awesome. I could hold the entire city in my hand from this view. I could even see Ellis Island a distance away from there. The stores were also large compared to the ones of my little town. A small retail store in New Caney would be a huge store that took up an entire building in New York. This would make it seem logical that the prices of everything in New York were almost triple those back home. It was as if the little peaceful neighborhood where I lived was magnified by 100 to make up the wonder city of New York. My visit to New York City was a life changing experience. For the first time in my life, I was exposed to a little taste of what the real world is like. The incredible modes of transportation, the huge skyscrapers, and all of the thousands of people made me anxious to grow up and perhaps move to an incredible city such as this one. Either way, my first trip to New York was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, one I will always treasure.

Trip to New York Essay Example

While standing in the bustling Jacksonville airport, thirteen-year-old me was extremely excited. That day I was surrounded by hundreds of people, with numerous destinations unknown to me. I also had a destination of my own; I was headed to New York City. Ever since I found out my family and I were going to New York City, I looked forward to this day, and now it was here.   

The event I was looking forward to the most that day was flying on an airplane.  I had never flown before but always wanted to.  The first thing we had to do was go through the TSA checks.  The lines were shorter than normal, and we quickly went through them. It was amazing to see all the restaurants and stores inside the airport.  I felt like I had just walked into a fancy shopping mall. We shopped and went to get something to eat and drink while waiting for our flight.  Finally, flight attendants allowed us to board the plane.   

Upon boarding the airplane, I was amazed at how crowded it was. The seats were extremely close together, and the middle aisle was quite narrow. There was barely enough space to walk to our seats, and I found it challenging to put the luggage in the carry-on bin. I began to feel claustrophobic. When I finally sat down and began to watch a movie, that feeling went away. Then the pilot told us we were about to take off. 

I had the window seat on the airplane and found the scenery beautiful. The entire airport was visible a few seconds after taking off. I had never been that high up in the sky before. Shortly after we were so high up in the sky that I could no longer see the ground, the flight attendant brought us snacks and drinks. The rest of the flight went by fast, and before I knew it we were descending rapidly.   

After we landed and got out of the airport, I surveyed my surroundings. There were numerous colossal skyscrapers, multitudes of people, and the roads were filled with thousands of vehicles. There were lines of taxis outside of the airport, and my family and I took one of the taxis to our hotel. I thought “since we are only a few miles away from our hotel, we should be there very soon”.  However, this was not the case. After one hour of slowly inching our way through New York City traffic, our hotel was finally in sight. We exited our taxi, and put our luggage in our rooms, and left to explore the city. 

I was amazed at how many people were in this city.  We had to pay attention to our surroundings to avoid bumping into people on the sidewalks. There were so many famous buildings that I wanted to see. I was thrilled that we had gotten tickets to tour the new One World Trade Center. To get to the top of the building, we had to use the elevator. To make the experience of riding the elevator more interesting, a movie played as we ascended to the top of the skyscraper.  Then we were able to explore the One World Trade Center Observatory.  There were pristine, glass windows surrounding the observatory. It was slightly terrifying to be so high up and surrounded by the glass, but the view was worth it.  It was the perfect birds-eye view of the city.  

Times Square

That evening we went to Times Square. After dark, Times Square was absolutely stunning. After many years of watching the ball drop on New Year’s Eve in Times Square, it was hard to believe that I was actually there. The giant billboards that you could see on television were even more striking in person. We went to an M&M’s shop in Times Square also.  There were every possible color and flavor of M&M’s in the store. After walking all day we were exhausted. So we left the store and walked back to the hotel. 

The next day we went on a tour of New York City. The tour guide guided us to many historical places, like The World Trade Center Memorial, The Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. It was very sobering to learn about the events of 9/11 and to see the names of all those who lost their lives on the Memorial.  We climbed the Statue of Liberty and learned about its fascinating history. I also learned about how immigrants from all over the world came to America to start a new life, and how some of them went to the Ellis Island immigrant inspection station. The tour guide told us every detail of what the immigrants went through to be allowed into the United States.  By the end of the day, we learned many things we previously did not know about the history of our country.

After a few days, it was time to go home. I was excited to fly again, but also sad that I was leaving New York. It was very cold in New York while we were there, so when we got back to the Jacksonville airport the ninety-degree weather was very surprising. I greatly enjoyed my trip to New York City, and I was grateful that I had the opportunity to learn about the rich history of the city. Hopefully, I can go back to New York City one day.

The Best Upstate New York Day Trips From NYC

Upstate New York's Hudson and Beacon , Montauk at the tip of Long Island—you’ve heard those names before. And while they’re all perfectly lovely New York City day trips or getaways, there’s a whole host of new hotels, restaurants, and things to do and see outside the five boroughs well beyond those highly trafficked hotspots. Here, we’ve rounded up four incredible upstate New York getaways that should go on your calendar this summer.

Hotel Lilien in Tannersville is home to Nat's Mountain House, a rollicking upstate iteration of a classic New York City institution.

The 18-room hotel is set in an 1890s estate formerly known as the Washington Irving Inn and has held fast to that stained-glass, wood-paneled identity.

For the foodie: The greater Hudson Valley

New York City’s pantry sits about two hours north of the city in the Hudson Valley. While it seems like every trendy chef, recipe developer, and writer decamped for the region during the pandemic, the mass exodus has unsurprisingly turned it into one of the best food-fueled parts of the state to explore.

Skip Catskill and Hudson and head just a hair west, where about two hours north of the city, a chain of small towns you’ve almost definitely never heard of have become playgrounds for top New York City chefs.

Check into Hotel Lilien in Tannersville (population: 579), where an 1890s estate formerly known as the Washington Irving Inn has been transformed into an 18-room getaway with a few modern updates. Hotel Lilien has held fast to its stained-glass and wood paneling while adding lighter, more modern updates—think Carrara marble, Brooklinen bed furnishings, and Mies van der Rohe lounge chairs.

Breakfast is included with your stay, and you’ll want to make sure you stay on-site for at least one dinner: Hotel Lilien is home to Nat’s Mountain House , the rollicking upstate iteration of Natalie Freihon’s Nat’s on Bank and Nat’s on Bleecker. Freihon, who was behind Orchard Street’s legendary Fat Radisha bastion of Lower Manhattan cool for yearsbrings her quirky talent to Hotel Lilien in the form of fondue laced with apples and pork belly croutons, pakora-fried radishes, and cocktails like Nat’s G&T, which is what you’d expect with the piquant addition of celery and olive bitters.

Spend time on the property perusing the library, hanging out by the fire pit or pool, or wandering the eight-acre grounds, but don’t miss some of the other culinary heavyweights who have made their presence in the community known: Day June Luncheonette in nearby Windham opened last summer, at the hands of Fabián von Hauske Valtierra and Jeremiah Stone, the Lower East Side chefs behind natural wine bar Wildair and the late Contra, and serves low-key fare like country fried steak and gravy with beef from nearby Highland Hollow, a nearby farm.

Von Hauske Valtierra and Stone are further expanding their upstate presence this month with the opening of Matilda , a more “formal” restaurant in new hotel The Henson. It’s also next door to the duo’s Paracasa , a small grocery and market, in case your home larder could use some Hudson Valley culinary flair.

If you don’t have or don’t want to rent a car, a two-hour Amtrak trip to Hudson, followed by a quick taxi (ideally pre-booked; this isn’t exactly an area rife with Uber or Lyft), will get you where you need to go.

Troutbeck is an estate hotel with 250 acres of nature and amenities that could be mistaken for a vast, comfortable, and sleek country home.

For the art lover: Armenia

If you’re looking for art outside of the city, you’ve probably been to Storm King or Wave Hill or, maybe if you’re extra adventurous, Mass MoCA—but you probably haven’t been to Wassaic.

On the other side of the Hudson River lies the Wassaic Project , an artist-run, non-profit gallery and residence center in the tiny eponymous hamlet. This year’s summer exhibition, Tall Shadows in Short Order , shows work from 30 artists, focusing on massive, site-specific installations spread through Maxon Mills, a seven-story former grain mill where Wassaic Project hosts its contemporary exhibitions. The exhibition is open on weekends through September, but it's one of just many events that the group hosts; throughout the summer there’s an annual benefit, themed late-night dance parties, and open artists’ studios will also fill your calendar.

Stay at nearby Troutbeck , a 250-acre estate hotel reminiscent of your favorite rich auntie’s country house if she had Malin + Goetz toiletries and Frette linens. Regular Manor House rooms are perfect for a night or two, but even if you’re not taking up residence at the hotel, you can enjoy a leisurely lunch of steelhead trout with brassicas and black garlic or garganelli pasta with Veritas Farms’ lamb ragu and ramps before strolling the grounds. Guests also have access to The Barns, a massive wellness complex with a 1,250-square-foot fitness studio, a gym, treatment rooms, changing rooms, and saunas; a newly-renovated pool; and two U.S.-Open surfaced hard tennis courts, among other things.)

Troutbeck’s natural setting makes it tough to leave, but it’s also just a few miles from the Sharon Audubon Center . Situated along the Atlantic Flyway, one of North America’s major paths for migratory birds, it’s home to more than 1,100 acres of woodland with 11 miles of trail, a pollinator garden, and a raptor aviary with live birds of prey.

End your day with a drive-in movie at Armenia’s Four Bros. Drive-In , which touts itself as the newest drive-in theater in America. Movies change weekly here, but Thursdays are a favorite, where Four Bros. often does a triple showing with a classic in the mix.

A 20th-century boarding house perched above Kenoza Lake is now the 22-room Kenoza Hall hotel, an excellent home base for outdoor adventuring.

For the outdoorsman: Sullivan Catskills

The Catskills range is a broad-reaching section of New York State, with part of the district stretching almost all the way down to Pennsylvania’s northeast corner. This more remote region, the Sullivan Catskills, is a paradise for outdoors lovers: the hiking here is some of the best in the Northeast, and the fly-fishing, in particular, is among the best in the world thanks to the assortment of waterways like the Beaver Kill, Willowemoc Creek, and the East Branch of the Delaware River. (Humble Roscoe, New York, proudly wears its badge as Trout Town USA.)

Even if you’re not an angler, the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum in Livingston Manor will enamor you with the poeticism of the sportearly mornings on misty rivers, the shimmering scales of a rainbow trout, hand-crafted bamboo rods, and dry flies meticulously tied with feathers and fur.

Stay at Kenoza Hall , a pandemic product of Foster Supply Hospitality, that transformed a sprawling 20th-century boarding house into a 22-room hotel with excellent views of the expansive grounds and nearby Kenoza Lake. At the end of the day, you can soak your weary bones in a massive tub (all rooms have them) before dining at the on-site restaurant, which has a menu of retro Old World classics: gnocchi Parisienne, filet Rossini, and duck confit.

After hiking the grounds or the Willowemoc Wild Forest, a massage may be in orderand counter to the rough-and-ready nature of a few of its peers, Kenoza Hall has you covered. The onsite spa Hemlock Spa offers body treatments and massages inspired by Sebastian Kneipp, an early promoter of holistic living. The Kneipp Neuromuscular Massage combines deep-tissue therapy with arnica gel for a soothing, tension-relieving treatment that will melt away the soreness from that last cast or rock scramble. (Also, don’t skip the Kneipp walking path—it may sound a bit “woo-woo,” but walking barefoot over things like rocks, moss, grass, and pinecones is surprisingly therapeutic.)

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame gives a behind-the-scenes look at the on-track action that powers Saratoga.

For the socialite: Saratoga

You’ve heard the Carly Simon lyric: “Well, I hear you went up to Saratoga, and your horse naturally won.” Well, 52 years after its release, Saratoga is cooler than ever, with a bevy of hotels, restaurants, and things to do.

Summer in Saratoga is all about the horses, and you’re going to stay as close to them as you can without sleeping on the track. At the Brentwood Hotel , a shedrow-style barn immediately adjacent to the famed track was reinvented as a cozy 12-room hotel. In fact, on early summer mornings, you’ll be awakened by the clip-clop of prized thoroughbred hooves making their way out to their morning workouts. Rooms here are on the small side but incredibly comfortable, and the on-site bar, Farrier, serves biodynamic wines, excellent cocktails, and local beer and cider that can be enjoyed at the outdoor firepit.

Snag one of the hotel’s loaner bikes and make the seven-minute cruise downtown, where Broadway is lined with endless boutiques (some horse-themed, natch), cafes, and restaurants, including Seneca , whose outdoor patio is the perfect spot to wile away a summer evening after a day at the track; high-rollers can go for a prime New York strip served with foie gras-studded mac and cheese and roasted garlic butter. Then, grab a nightcap at Hamlet & Ghost , a buzzy bar where a reservation is a must, especially during the race meet. It’s worth the effort in order to get your hands on a Health & Wealth: a surprisingly earthy blend of olive oil-washed vodka and lemon aperitif with blackberry and pineapple.

While on-track action can quickly fill your days here, it’s worth knowing what goes into the thousands of pounds (and dollars) of horseflesh. The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame gives an in-depth look into the sport of kings, from a racehorse’s first humble steps on Kentucky bluegrass to—hopefully—the pinnacle of the sport. Interactive exhibitions, like the chance to “call” a race and walk through a true-to-size starting gate, all sweeten the experience at this unique museum.

Saratoga is easy to get to from the city, with Amtrak taking just under four hours. You’ll want your own car if you decide to venture out of town-proper to Saratoga Lake or up to Queensbury, but otherwise, biking or rideshare are both easy options here.

Travel for Library Lovers

A nd if you’re going to be in one destination or an extended period of time, you may be able to get a temporary library card giving you access to books and services for the time you’re there. For a book lover, that’s a big travel bonus. (If you’re looking for reading ideas, you can find some of my recommendations here.)

I asked a few traveling friends to share some of their favorite ideas about libraries.

The Long Room, Dublin: when Jedi knowledge meets monastic Ireland

When I think of libraries one that is top of mind is Trinity College and the Book of Kells. When Marta visited, however, she saw a comparison between Trinity College’s Long Room and Star Wars’ Jedi Temple archive. Do you see the similarity?

The Long Room is the most imposing and beautiful part of the vast Trinity College Library, an impressive collection of over 3 million manuscripts and books hosted in the grounds of Dublin’s oldest university. Trinity college dates back to 1592 when it was funded by charter of Queen Elisabeth, but the oldest library buildings we see now only date back to 1712, when construction started following the designs of Thomas Burgh.

Osgoode Hall, Toronto, Ontario – Photo Essay

Osgoode Hall in downtown Toronto is home to the two courts and the Law Society. It also houses the largest private law library in Canada, the Great Library, with over 100,000 volumes. Mary captured the grandeur of the building in photos.

I recently had an opportunity to tour the inside of Osgoode Hall and although it wasn’t a requirement or even necessary, I couldn’t help but whisper as I walked through the halls. You are after all in a place of law! Another thing was that I felt really small, especially in the library…with its high ornate ceilings and walls filled with books.

Underwhelmed in Alexandria, Egypt

Although he was underwhelmed, in general, with Alexandria, Lance was impressed with the collections at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (that’s his photo above).

We LOVED the area dedicated to the late President Anwar Sadat. It included a number of items from Sadat’s life, including a letter from then-U.S. President Jimmy Carter praising him for his role in bringing peace to relations with Israel as well as the clothes he was wearing when he was assassinated. Being American and woefully ignorant of Egyptian history, seeing this room (especially in the aftermath of the January 25 revolution) helped bring context to the political struggles of the country.

Getting Booked at New York’s Library Hotel

The Library Hotel in New York City combines two of my favorite things – books and a luxury stay – in an enticing environment. I’ve put this on my to-stay list.

Lance liked it too (that’s his photo above) and says:

One of the unusual aspects of the hotel is its number system. The entire hotel is laid out on the Dewey Decimal System. Each of the floors and all of the rooms have a theme based on the Dewey system. Our room was the Middle Eastern Language room and featured Islamic art (one of our favorites).

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.
