NEW BRUNSWICK TOURISM DASHBOARD

This dashboard shares information on the health of the Tourism Sector in New Brunswick. It indicates, where visitors are from, when they visit, and how New Brunswickers are feeling in regard to hosting these visitors.

Visits to New Brunswick

Resident sentiment weekly tracker.

Data is aggregated and compared on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis versus the previous month, quarter and year.

Data is selected from devices that can reliably infer their Daily and Yearly Common Evening Locations.

Data has been anonymized, standardized and normalized leveraging demographic data and PRIZM , a neighbourhood segmentation system.

Visits/Trips = the number of times an individual travels 60 km or more away from their common evening location and spent 1 or more nights in New Brunswick before returning to their common evening location.

Common Evening Location (CEL) = Used to infer the device home location (where the device is normally seen between 6PM and 8AM the following morning) over the last 365 days; The common evening location is assigned to the closest Postal Code.

VisitorView is developed by Environics Analytics . It creates overnight visitation estimates using a combination of privacy-compliant, anonymous mobile location data, administrative datasets and analytics.

Notes & analysis

Destination Canada is seeking to understand how safe residents of each province/region are feeling towards travelling to different places.

Approximately ~1,800 responses for the resident sentiment questions are collected from Canadians on a weekly basis through an online methodology. The study is fielded from Friday to Sunday preceding the report date. The study is weighted to be representative of the Canadian population according to census data, excluding the northern territories. The northern territories are excluded from this research due to sample feasibility issues given small population sizes. The questions are being asked by Leger, a market research provider.

Every week, respondents are asked a question evaluating their personal feelings of safety towards travel to various destination

Two questions are asked on a rotating basis and alternate each week and evaluate:

  • The level of welcome residents have towards visitors to their own community
  • The receptivity of residents towards seeing advertising promoting their own community

Destination Canada has requested a minimum of n=200 respondents every week from each province/region, with a minimum of n=50 respondents identifying as living in rural communities among each province/region.

New Brunswick tourism numbers bounce back post-pandemic

The Province of New Brunswick has shared tourism statistics for 2022 and the numbers are up from a year ago -- way up.

According to the province's department of tourism, total room sales from January to September jumped from just over 707,386 in 2021 to 1,105,674 last year.

Annick Robichaud Butland, the owner of ABConnect Travel and the president of the Albert County Chamber of Commerce, has a simple reason for that.

"For 2022, it was the first year that was fully open to all markets for the entirety of the year. So it gave us a chance to have more of a normal year and getting back to regular numbers," said Robichaud Butland.

But the rise in overnight visitors post-pandemic is significant.

Visitors from the United States saw an increase of 414 per cent. Ontario visitors saw an increase of 144 per cent. It was 85 per cent for Quebec and 115 per cent for the rest of Canada.

Encouraging news, but the numbers couldn't help but go up with the borders open again.

The CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of New Brunswick said the numbers can be taken with a grain of salt, but it's still good news.

"Honestly, you need to take the positives where the positives are rather than looking backwards," said Andrew McNair. "You know, it's good to see people travelling again and things returning to where they should be."

McNair said overall numbers are not quite what they were pre-pandemic, but people are seeking new adventures in New Brunswick and the province is trying to capitalize on that.

"They've done a really good job at focusing on what tourism is looking like and what tourists are looking for. They’ve shifted somewhat to outdoor adventure tourism and a lot of that type of product," said McNair.

Visits to provincial parks increased from 695,100 in 2019 to 810,510 in 2022. Campsite bookings were up to what the province says is likely a record 86,678 bookings.

McNair said after being in lockdown, people living in nearby states and provinces are looking for new places to travel.

"Tourism is evolving and what tourists are looking for and what they're wanting is evolving a bit too," said McNair. "Post-pandemic, people are doing a little more outdoor activities."

So what's the appeal to an American traveller or a Canadian who's never been to New Brunswick before?

"We're really nice," laughed Robichaud Butland. "Actually, our Maritime friendliness. I know it's been said time and time again, but it's true. People like the laid-back lifestyle, the open space. It's not crowded, it's safe. So those are definitely draws that we have."

And there's more positive news.

The AREA 506 Waterfront Container Village in Saint John recently won a Canadian Tourism Award in the innovation category and the Heritage Path Tour in the Elsipogtog First Nation won in the Indigenous category.

Tourism New Brunswick is a government organization that is responsible for growing tourism in the province. The organization operates the province’s official travel portal and collaborates with cities and attractions to reach and engage their target audiences.

“No-Hassle Travellers’ are 93 percent more likely to visit New Brunswick than the average Canadian Household. We never would have known this before.”

Tourism New Brunswick wanted to improve targeting and marketing effectiveness for its campaigns. To do so, they employed PRIZM and Destination Canada's Explorer Quotient (EQ) segmentation systems. However, they did not know if the segments they wanted to focus on were visiting the province or where they were going. While the segmentation system helped it concentrate its efforts, the tourism department didn't have the transactional data necessary to verify who was visiting the province. The department had many questions about their visitors' travel habits, answering them was an essential issue for Tourism New Brunswick because the answers would have implications on how cities, attractions, and tourism operators develop their product offerings and marketing strategies.

Step one with paper and microscope

While most organizations in the tourism sector want to know about visitors to a particular attraction, Tourism New Brunswick sought to capture guest insights from across the province. The tourism department considered other approaches, like intercept surveys or visitor count data, but they were deemed to be cost-prohibitive and time-consuming. The tourism department wanted to use privacy-compliant mobile location data  to serve as a proxy for transactional data, similar to the way malls and communities use it to analyze their visitors, but the scope of the project was beyond anything attempted with the technology so far.

Step two, arrows circling city icon

Mobility analytics can provide insights for areas where there is limited or no transactional data. For the first time, Tourism New Brunswick was able to link the segments it targeted in its campaigns to actual visitation to the province. For example, the mobility data revealed that the PRIZM segment Mini Van & Vin Rouge was 24 percent more likely to visit New Brunswick than the average Quebec household. By looking at the origins of the devices, the tourism department could also understand the difference between Canadian and American travellers. The analysis reveals Canadian visits peak very noticeably in the summer months, whereas visits from the U.S. peak later in the year.

With mobility data, Tourism New Brunswick was able to determine that a significant portion of visitors made it their destination of choice. Almost half of the Canadian visitors and 35 percent of U.S. visitors spent at least one night in New Brunswick. These insights are now allowing Tourism New Brunswick to refine and optimize its segments from one year to the next.

With this approach, Tourism New Brunswick can also identify which segments are not performing well and understand why in order to affect change and grow visits.

Population projections: canada, provinces and territories, 2023 to 2073.

Released: 2024-06-24

Since the last edition of Statistics Canada's population projections for Canada, provinces and territories, released in 2022, Canada's demographic landscape has evolved substantially: population growth has accelerated following many permanent and temporary immigrants coming to the country, fertility has reached a record-low level in 2022, and life expectancy has decreased for three years in a row (from 2020 to 2022).

Today, Statistics Canada has released a new set of projections for Canada (2023 to 2073) and for the provinces and territories (2023 to 2048). These projections include several possible scenarios of the future evolution of the population, as projections are not predictions. These scenarios take into account recent trends and also the opinions of population experts who were consulted specifically during the development of these projections.

Canada could have 63 million inhabitants by 2073

According to the various projection scenarios, Canada's population, estimated at 40.1 million in 2023, would continue to grow over the coming decades to reach between 47.1 million and 87.2 million in 2073. According to the medium-growth scenario (M1), the Canadian population would reach 62.8 million people in 2073.

From an average of 1.12% over the last 30 years, the annual population growth rate would gradually decrease to reach 0.79% by 2072/2073, according to the medium-growth scenario (M1). In comparison, this rate would increase to 1.59% according to the high-growth scenario and would decrease to 0.07% according to the low-growth scenario.

In all scenarios, migratory increase would be the key driver of population growth in Canada, continuing a trend observed since the beginning of the 1990s. Natural increas e—t hat is, the balance of births minus death s—w ould play only a marginal role, given the anticipated rise in the number of deaths due to population aging, as well as low fertility, a situation observed in many other countries.

The population aged 85 and older could triple by 2073

The share of persons aged 65 and older within the total population would increase from 18.9% in 2023 to between 21.9% (slow-aging scenario) and 32.3% (fast-aging scenario) in 2073.

However, the growth in the proportion of persons aged 65 and older would be less pronounced after 2030, when all baby-boomers will have reached or passed the age of 65.

The share of children (aged between 0 and 14) within Canada's population has decreased significantly since 1962, when it peaked at 34.0%. Estimated at 15.4% in 2023, this share of children in the population would decrease according to all projection scenarios, with the exception of the slow-aging scenario and the high-growth scenario.

The number of persons aged 85 and older would continue to increase rapidly in the coming years, particularly between 2031 and 2050, a period during which the large baby-boom cohort will reach this age group where the need for healthcare and services are significant. According to the various projection scenarios, the population aged 85 and older would increase from 896,600 people in 2023 to between 3.3 million (low-growth scenario) and 4.3 million (high-growth scenario) people in 2073.

The average age of Canada's population would reach between 42.6 years (slow-aging scenario) and 50.1 years (fast-aging scenario) in 2073, up from 41.6 years in 2023.

Population aging in all provinces and territories

If recent trends continue over the long term, the relative weight of the population of the provinces east of Ontario would continue to decline according to all projection scenarios.

Specifically, the populations of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Quebec would continue to decrease as a share of Canada's total population between 2023 and 2048, according to almost all scenarios. Conversely, the demographic weight of Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia would increase according to all scenarios.

In all projection scenarios, Ontario and Quebec would continue to be the most populous provinces in Canada over the next 25 years.

The average annual population growth rate would vary considerably among the provinces and territories. Some provinces and territories could see their population size decrease according to certain scenarios. For example, according to the low-growth scenario, the populations of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Northwest Territories would both decrease between 2023 and 2048.

As population aging continues, the share of older adults (aged 65 and older) in the total population would continue to increase in all provinces and territories in the coming years. The proportion of persons aged 85 and older would also increase rapidly in all provinces and territories.

A new tourism company that will offer tours of Black heritage sites and charters to cultural events around Nova Scotia has been granted its licence after facing pushback from competitors.

The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board approved a motor carrier licence for Ayomikun Bus Charters on June 20.

"It was almost like finding out you won the lottery, for me personally," Dalton Cain, vice-president of Ayomikun Bus Charters, told CBC Radio's  Information Morning Halifax.  "That overwhelming feeling of OK, now we're able to start and do something that we all genuinely put our blood, sweat and tears into just putting it all together and getting it underway."

Cain, along with friends Kevin Brooks and Peter Field, started the company last December with the goal of making Black history more accessible through bus tours.

But during their licence application process, the new company faced opposition from tourism competitors , who said there isn't a market for African Nova Scotian cultural tours. They also had concerns about "overcapacity within the industry for existing operators."

The review board disagreed, noting in its decision that "there is a niche Black cultural market in this province."

"This market is not being fully served by the existing carriers," the decision said.

Three men stand together and smile for a photo.

Cain said while the situation was mentally draining, he's pleased with the end result.

"There were organizations who were trying to prevent us from obtaining a licence, reaching a demographic of people who are underserved — specifically speaking of our community, the Black communities — so in doing that, it was just overwhelmingly frustrating at some times," he said.

"But the support that we had from community and one another, it helped us stay grounded."

Kevin Brooks, president of Ayomikun Bus Charters, said that support is what kept them optimistic.

"We went through some pains, but it made us stronger. And as a team it made us stronger, and we're better because of it," he said.

Ayomikun means 'full of joy'

Peter Field, co-owner and manager of Ayomikun Bus Charters, said he and his partners are feeling joyful now that the licence has been approved.

It's a fitting feeling, he said, because Ayomikun means "full of joy" in the Nigerian language of Yoruba.

"That's our intentions for people who take our tours. That they will have a joyful experience and get off the bus full of joy," Field said.

Brooks said the company is working to source two buses, with hopes of being on the road by Aug. 1 for Emancipation Day.
