Etna Tour 4×4 is one of the most requested excursions. The tour includes an itinerary in stages in which the 4 × 4 movements alternate and off-road routes with short walks, in order to appreciate places of great naturalistic interest within the Etna Park . Starting from the lava flows that have threatened entire countries, we will visit some extinct craters and the viewpoint of the majestic Valle del Bove . We will also let you experience the thrill of descending into the meanders of the volcano by visiting a lava flow cave (lava tube) equipped with a helmet and speleologist lights, to include the methods related to the lava flow. Our nature guides will enrich our excursion by illustrating, in simple and clear language for everyone, the countless natural and volcanological aspects of the largest volcano in Europe, named UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.

Tour Program

The most impressive manifestations of the Etna volcano are the lava flows that descend along the sides of the volcano even for many kilometers. Over the centuries there have been hundreds, some have even reached the sea! On board our 4x4 vehicles we will plow the dark scoriaceous surfaces of ancient and recent lava flows and we will let you touch the transformation of these volcanic rocks from an apparently sterile surface to one of the most fertile in the world.

"Valle del Bove" is a huge natural amphitheater that covers almost the entire eastern side of the volcano. Its walls are up to 800/1000 meters high. Within this "valley" most of the Etna lava flows flow together, making it a place of raw beauty, so from its edges, a panoramic point of passage for many of our excursions on the volcano, it is often possible to admire volcanic activity. We will explain the formation processes of this place and the geological history of the volcano (still evolving ...) object of interest of volcanologists from all over the world.

Etna is very rich in volcanic caves, over 250 known ones, which were formed due to the thickening of the lava due to the solidification of the outermost layer of the eruptive flow in contact with the air. Once the cooling is complete, the extraordinary morphologies connected to the passage of the fluid and incandescent lava remain visible: remelting stalactites, bubbles, shelves, rolls and more. We will provide you with lights and helmets to visit, going down inside, a fascinating volcanic cave in order to understand some truly unique and interesting dynamics.

The lateral craters are cones normally generated along eruptive fractures at even low altitudes, due to the accumulation of volcanic slags in the same point for the duration of the eruption (therefore days / months). Etna has about 250 along its sides and their number is increasing since almost every eruption these cones are formed upstream of the lava flow. They are on average about 100 meters high and from their top you can have a privileged overview of the surrounding area having almost the sensation of flying. We will let you experience the thrill of climbing some of these craters from the relevant altitude of about 2000 meters.

ETNA 3K TOUR,  VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATORY

The Etna 3k tour at the Volcanological Observatory will take you to the feet of the majestic active craters of Etna, the North-East, the Central crater and the South-East. The ascent will be on board 4x4 vehicles up to the volcanological observatory. From this position it will be possible admire the volcanic plateau where the 4 summit craters of Etna are located, with a unique view of the South-East crater, it could gives you the spectacle of a new explosion*. A short trek will lead you to the majestic volcanic depression of the Valle del Bove, with its walls and peaks of volcanic rock over 1k meters high. Most part of the trail will take place along lava fields, typical lunar landscapes, and inactive craters, with wonderful views of the Ionian coast and Taormina. The tour lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and is accessible to anyone. During the return to the station there is a further stop during which you will discover the phenomenon of the subterminal eruptions of Etna.

Aci Castello

Accompanied by a marine biologist and an underwater environmental guide, you will head to explore the enchanting lava sea beds of Aci Castello, also known as the “Island of the Cyclops.” Here, you will snorkel in a protected marine area. Dive beneath the surface and discover underwater columnar basalt, lava ropes, lava cushions, marine life, and colorful plants. At the end of this truly magical experience, you will be dropped back to where the journey began, in Catania.

Gole dell’ Alcantara

Leave Etna behind as you head to the gorges of Alcantara, which were formed by black lava walls molded in the prismatic shape that is typical of rocks during the cooling process. Admire the columnar basalts, the lava formations, and extraordinary shapes of varying thickness and orientation. Tour the nature reserve before heading back to where you started.

Acireale & Acitrezza

Head to the ancient town of Acireale, which is located on a lava-stone plateau overlooking the sea. Visit a pastry shop and sample typical products like Sicilian granita, arancini, and cannoli. The next part of the journey will see you in the seaside village of Acitrezza. Off its coast lie, three tall, prominent sea stacks (Island of the Cyclops) which great legends claim were the great stones thrown at Odysseus in the epic poem The Odyssey. By bus: 2-5, 431N, 439, 530, 534 Nearest stop: VI Aprile Sangiuliano (1 minute away from the meeting point)

By car: You can drive down to Rifugio Sapienza. Park here and then get a ticket to a 20-seater off-road vehicle that takes you up to 8,500 feet. From here, a qualified guide can take you higher or if you choose, you can even use their services to ascend to the summit.

• Try and reach Rifugio Sapienza (the starting point and located on Etna’s southern side) by around 8:30 in the morning. While the cable car officially starts at 9 AM, the first lift sometimes begins 15 minutes earlier. If you get here on time, you’ll be able to avoid the massive crowds that generally start arriving around or after 10 AM.
• That said, maximize your exploration by taking advantage of the cable car and off-road vehicles available for ascending Mount Etna. The cable car offers a smooth ascent, and the off-road vehicles navigate the challenging terrain.
• Take the opportunity to savor the unique flavors of Mount Etna. Indulge in local delicacies, such as honey, wine, and pistachios, known for their distinct volcanic tang.
• Don’t let the fiery breath of Mount Etna fool you into thinking it’s summer year round–once you ascend the peaks, it gets quite chilly. Carrying a jacket and a hat is advisable to beat the sudden cold.
• Always stick to the paths defined by the tour guides, especially when you’re walking up or hiking. This is because the landscape is constantly changing, so going off on a detour can be dangerous.

• Goes without saying, but wearing sturdy shoes or hiking boots are a must while visiting Etna. Save those flip flops for the beach!

Due to uneven terrain and undulating lava fields, Mount Etna is not the most accessible destination on the planet. That said, there are limited provisions for wheelchair users to enjoy the volcano either on a 4x4 drive or by taking the Ferrovio Circumetnea train which circles the volcano. The Circumetnea departs from Catania and ends at Riposto.

Is it safe to visit Mount Etna? On most occasions, yes. The meteorological department is actively tracking Etna's state and will issue warnings if an eruption is about to occur. Moreover, Etna's eruptions tend to be relatively predictable, often occurring from its summit craters or new vents that open on its flanks. This means that most areas around the volcano are considered safe zones. Areas that are deemed too dangerous due to recent eruptions or volcanic activity are typically closed off to the public. However, before you visit, it is best to check whether it is advisable to visit Mount Etna during that period.
