Mongolian Shamanism

Introduction.

Mongolian Shamanism is an ancient ethnic religion, tradition and moreover, a way of life. It is a way to connect with nature and all of creation. As all ancient spiritual practices are rooted in nature, shamanism is the method by which we can strengthen that natural connection. It is also centered on the worship of the Tenger (Heaven, God of Heaven, God) Shamanism is the universal spiritual wisdom inherent to all tribes and it is memory of tribes and nations, preserving the traditions through-out the centuries. Mongolian shamanism is an all-encompassing system of belief that includes medicine, religion, a reverence of nature, and ancestor worship. It is a practice that involves a practitioner reaching altered states of consciousness in order to perceive and interact with spiritual world. A shaman is someone who is regarded as having access to the world of spirits and enters into a trance state during a ritual and connects with spirits of their ancestors. Shamans perform a variety of functions depending upon their respective cultures; healing, leading a sacrifice, preserving the tradition by storytelling and songs, fortune-telling, and acting as a psychopomp (literal meaning, “guide of souls”). A single Shaman may fulfill several of these functions. In this way the Shaman helps to maintain balance and harmony on both a personal and planetary level.

What our guests say

We appreciate your feedback about our tours and services.

Living the mongolian way

Great place to stay and experience mongolian way of living, no tv, wifi, phone. Just nature and great company of the staff and livestocks of mongolia. The toilet is a hole in the ground covered by a shed. It is clean, but can be smelly to those used to city life. Not hot water supply, inform the staff that you like to hot water half an hour earlier so that they can boil it over camel dung 🙂

There are endless cultural and historic stones to overturn during a visit to Mongolia , but none may be quite as unique as the ancient practice of Shamanism. A practice full of rituals and tradition that have a huge impact on everyday life in Mongolia even today.

Visiting a Shaman is a serious spiritual undertaking for Mongolians, but foreigners can take part as well. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting a Shaman in Mongolia.

This Shaman experience comes highly recommended and is a great tour to book to get a feel for Shamanism in Mongolia.  Book this 1-on-1 Shaman Experience for $149 now →

Mongolian Shamanism: Then and Now

Shamanism dates to the time of the Hun Empire between 300 and 400 BCE, making it one of the most ancient spiritual practices among modern humans.

Shamanism emphasizes the spirit that exists among all living things, places, and objects (like rivers and mountains), rather than focusing on a specific deity.

It’s the Shamans who then serve as mediums between the spirit world and the mortal plane. Once a Shaman channels a spirit, they are then able to offer guidance, advice, or even punishment for those seeking wisdom.

Today, Buddhism is the main religion practiced in Mongolia. But many Mongolians continue to seek the counsel of a spirit-channeling Shaman during times of strife or transition.

This may seem unfamiliar to Western-minded people raised to see religion as an all or nothing commitment, but there is no such mutual-exclusivity in Mongolian spirituality.

In fact, all over the Steppe you are likely to spy a teepee-shaped structure covered in blue strips of fabric called an ovoo tahilga. Originally shamanistic in nature, these structures now incorporate Buddhist qualities as well.

For today’s Mongolians, visiting a Shaman is a serious undertaking with sacred rituals and real-life consequences. If you are able to visit a Shaman in Mongolia, remember that it’s not a show or performance put on for entertainment, but a deeply rooted cultural experience. To be invited into a Shaman’s home is the highest honor possible and you should pay your respects accordingly.

Mongolian Shamanism

What Makes Mongolian Shamanism Unique

Most Shamanistic practices are derived from animism, or the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence.

It’s out of these beliefs, and a respect for nature, that Mongolian shamans are able to channel spirits. In doing this, they are able to provide advice, foretelling the future, and doling out direction for a more harmonious life.

Shamans are called to the profession, often identified by an elder mentor or someone in the community who can identify one’s spirit-channeling ability. They will then undergo extensive training to perform these sacred rituals and tasks while keeping a balance between the two universes.

In Mongolian Shamanism, an interpreter always accompanies the Shaman. This is usually the Shaman’s wife. It’s her who will then translate the Shaman’s ancient Mongolian tongue he’s speaking into modern Mongolian.

If you don’t speak Mongolian, you’ll then need a second interpreter to help make this process go smoothly. The Shaman will address you privately, asking questions, and telling you things about your life that you’d never expect. Having an interpreter is a key part of this experience and getting the most out of your visit.

Mongolian Shaman Clothing

Mongolian Shamans don very specific garb, which is unlike the clothing of Shamans anywhere else in the world.

It includes a deel, the traditional Mongolian robe most nomadic herder’s wear. However, a Shaman’s deel will look completely different. A Shaman’s deel will be covered in snakes or wolf pelts or other sacred items. They’ll wear a feathered hat with a face cover and traditional Mongolian boots.

The Shaman will also beat a goat skin drum with a drumstick to conjure the spirits. Collectively, the outfit makes the Shaman appear quite mystical and ancient, truly embodying the ancestral spirit coming through him.

Shamans from other cultures may provide a calming or peaceful experience, but don’t expect that here. Mongolian Shamans can be quite intense, depending on which spirit is embodying them, and even visitors aren’t exempt from being whipped as punishment or to remove dark curses.

Visit a Shaman Mongolia

Am I supposed to bring a gift for the Shaman?

Yes, bringing a small gift is always expected when you enter anyone’s home in Mongolia. Shaman or not.

Following your session with the Shaman, it’s also appropriate to leave an offering of some kind. This is typically money. An appropriate amount to leave on the alter of the Shaman after receiving his advice is 10,000 to 20,000 Tugriks.

Arranging a Shaman Visit

Arranging a visit to a Shaman is not a typical thing tourists are interested, or even invited, to do.

It takes a traveler with a curious kind of soul to be open to this experience, and for the opportunity to visit a Shaman to present itself. And often times, it doesn’t.

While there are dedicated tours online, as well as a  International Shaman Festival in Ulaanbaatar  every May, the best way to arrange a visit is through a local tour agency or contact. Whether that be a local guide, local fixer, or other, locals are always in the know about which Shamans are the real deal.

They’ll also be able to help you navigate the experience, which isn’t always straight forward.

Even when you do work with a local to arrange a visit, there’s no guarantee the Shaman will see you. A Shaman doesn’t hold a Spirit ceremony until nighttime, usually no earlier than 10 or 11 pm. These ceremonies can then last for hours, going on until the early hours of the morning.

Even then, after you agree on a date and time for a visit, there’s still the possibility the Shaman, or the Spirits, change their minds. The uncertainty only adds to the mystique.

Additionally, it’s important to know that once a ceremony starts, there’s no leaving until the ceremony is over. No matter what you see, and no matter what happens, once a ceremony has begun, you’ve committed to seeing it through. For better or for worse.

As with much of Mongolia, it’s best to leave flexibility in your schedule for these things. Especially if this is something you don’t want to leave without experiencing.

What Happens When You See a Mongolian Shaman?

When planning to visit a Shaman, come prepared by knowing your Chinese Zodiac according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Ox, rat, tiger, monkey, rooster, each animal holds a significance in these ceremonies.

You should also have one very specific question channeling through you. Maybe you want to know about your job or your marriage. Come with a question you want answered and be specific.

If at any time during the ceremony, you feel the urge to take a photo, just don’t. It’s disrespectful to the Shaman and the local who helped you arrange this visit. I recommend not bringing your cell phone on your visit.

Before the Shaman can call to the Spirits, women will be asked to remove their earrings and to take out any hair bands and leave their hair down. You have to stay like this throughout the entire ceremony.

The Shaman will then begin to call to the Spirits through dancing, singing, and using his specifically tuned drum. Once he enters a noticeable state of trance, that means the Spirit has embodied him.

Spirits may be warriors, family members, or strangers from the past. They can be good and they can also be bad. Don’t be alarmed is the Spirit is dark.

When the Shaman summons you, sit on your knees before him, with your feet facing away from him. Don’t sit with crossed legs.

He may grab your hand, or hold your head, or not touch you at all. He may begin by telling you things you never intended him to know, or he may ask why you’ve come to see him. No matter what happens, don’t be surprised when the spirit is able to pinpoint aspects of your life you’ve never spoken aloud.

Visiting a Shaman can be an intense experience, so be prepared for anything.

Shamans typically only see members of their local community, and they do so on an ongoing basis. Don’t be disappointed if he is unable to resolve your question to the fullest degree, these questions often take time for him to get to the root of. If it was so easy to answer some of these things for yourself, you wouldn’t have needed to even see him in the first place!

The best approach to Mongolian Shamanism is to go into it with an open mind, a flexible schedule, and an appreciation that these ancient practices have survived through so many generations to be experienced today.

We rode on a camel, took a lot of pictures, enjoyed a looooong(5-6 hours?) endless road trip to the ger with Mongolian musics that our guide Bachi selected. Talking about Bachi, he was so talented and has a various kind of experience in his life, so what he has storytelled amused us and never got bored thanks to him. The highlight is the overnight staying at a nomad fam gar. It was definitely once in a lifetime experience. Btw, if we could have also been to the hustai National park then it would be even better. • hajinh2023 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing and authentic experience! In a nutshell - super amazing and authentic experience. Bachi was very knowledgeable on history and culture of Mongolian - he also shared a lot about shamanism in Mongolia which was very interesting! He knows all the hidden places with crazy beautiful sceneries and he knows his way around Mongolia - if the weather isn't great in the first day, he'd be flexible and change your plan - it turned out super great in our case! It rained when we reached Semi-Gobi, so we directly headed to the next destination with a better weather, headed back to Semi-Gobi the next day with a super great weather. So enjoyed all the destinations with nice weather. I read the reviews ahead so I was prepared for the possible unhygienic situation but it was okay overall! Like, it would lose authenticity and would be weird if the nomadic family is super hygienic when it comes to burning the horse dung for the heat just for the travelers - remember they are not hotel or hostel hosts - they simply share and show their real and authentic lifestyle to the travelers. If you expect something like that, then you should go to super commercialized ones, not the authentic tour like this. I was a solo traveler so I was kinda worried about the bedroom situation esp. because my travel companions were all male, but when we go to the traveler ger camp, you can always find a ger for yourself or share it with other female travelers from other groups, so no worries at all. I stayed with the mama of the nomadic family too when we stayed the night at the nomadic family's house. Bachi tries his best to create safe environment for solo female traveler like me. • WasHereTraveling 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Very traditional, overpriced. Look for other similar tours. Our tour guide and the nomad family were very nice which is the only reason it earned the extra star. Why I only gave 2 stars on this trip?… The tour guide picked us up on time from our hotel where we began our 7 hour drive. The SUV vehicle only had seatbelts for the driver, passengers had no usable seatbelts to use. The vehicle had no AC, but that’s ok, it was in the 70’s outside. We stopped at a rest stop restaurant on the way and ate some food, which had a long black hair inside, but not the fault of the tour. We didn’t stop much during the long drive, it would have been nice if the tour guide offer some sight seeing on the way like other similar trips offer. Once we made it to our destination we went for the camel ride, but it was very short. They take you about 150m through the sand dune to take photos then ride back. The primary reason for 2 stars: The Nomad family was very dirty; let me explain. They have small stoves to cook homemade noodles with beef and carrots inside, however, it’s extremely unsanitary. They burn horse poop in the stoves, but that’s ok. The problem is they use their hands to put the horse poop in the stove, then they continue cooking your meal and going on their day without ever washing hands or using hand sanitizer. There is no soap, hand sanitizer, or hot water on the entire farm. If you want hot water they need to boil it for you on the stove. They offered fermented horse milk to drink as a nice gesture, but the bowl was littered with flies inside and they don’t mind. They share dishes among us and each other without washing them (even with covid), so if anyone gets sick there is a high chance of it spreading to many tourists. This can be a major inconvenience if you test positive for covid on your return trip home. There is no toilet. There is an outhouse to poop in, but it’s the traditional kind you have to squat over. You’ll need to bring your own tp wipes. No showers or sinks to clean up, so think of this trip like camping. The beds were pretty hard, but comfortable considering they were covered in a layer wool and blankets. The wool blankets were warm at night when the fire went out which was nice. The following morning we were not offered breakfast, but instead the leftover dinner from the day before that was left out all night for the bugs to get to… On the drive home we never stopped at a horseman’s family or even seen horses other than passing by on the highway. We stopped at the same rest stop as the way there to use the bathroom then continued all the way back to the hotel. Overall the trip was more like camping and it wouldn’t have been half bad if they explained that in the description so we could properly prepare. The trip was also significantly overpriced for what was offered compared to the other trips like this one, yet the other similar trips have shower rooms, sinks to clean up, and soap etc… I recommend look elsewhere for similar trips that offer better commendations considering they are roughly the same price. This tour is very, very traditional. So if this is what you’re looking for choose this trip and bring hand sanitizer. Read more Written September 11, 2022
  • patleck 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles DO NOT USE HIM Bachi was fast to collect money. December 2019, I made a full payment for the Mongolia tour in May 2020. Under the agreement, I can have 100% refund when I cancelled before April 2020. Due to Covid, I need to cancel the tour in March and asked for refund. After numerous emails and empty promises from Bachi, 9 months have passed and U never get my money back. In addition, he is now uncontactable. • MonOnMove 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An amazing, once in a lifetime experience! I planned a last minute trip to Mongolia and immediately booked this tour. I was in for a treat! My guide/driver was Nara and she was an amazing hostess. I was picked up promptly from my hotel in UB, we traveled through the countryside and had lunch, stopped at the wild horse reserve along the way, and ultimately got to our destination in the semi gobi desert. Along the way, we also saw several nomadic families migrating to different lands with all of their livestock. That was a sight to see! The nomadic host family who we stayed with is very kind. You’ll help them to make a meal to eat all together. Their camels are beautiful and the land they stay on is just stunning at any time of day. It’s an incredible experience to stay in a yurt and live that life albeit just for a night. I highly recommend this tour (and as a matter of fact, have suggested it to a few people now).

It is also centered on the worship of the Tenger (Heaven, God of Heaven, God)

Shamanism is the universal spiritual wisdom inherent to all tribes and it is memory of tribes and nations, preserving the traditions throughout the centuries.

  • WHAT'S INCLUDED

The Mongolian shaman tour is an excellent opportunity for those who have a short period in Mongolia and are interested in learning about shamanism . During this tour, you will have the chance to meet a Mongolian shaman and communicate with their ancestors, which is a unique experience that is not very popular in Mongolia.

Day 1. Arrive at Chinggis Khaan airport

We will pick you up from the Chinggis Khaan airport and transfer you to your hotel. In the afternoon, we will embark on a city tour, which will include a visit to Sukhbaatar Square, the National Historical Museum , Gandan Monastery , and Zaisan Hill . In the evening, we will enjoy dinner at a restaurant where you will get the chance to meet the Shaman. You will spend the night in a hotel.

Visit the supermarket to prepare for the next three days before driving to the Shaman Center. We will visit the shaman’s home, where you will have the chance to meet her and learn about Shamanism. We will spend the night in a ger close to the Shaman’s house.

Day 3-4. Stay with a shaman (shamanic ritual)

On Days 3 and 4, we will make a shamanic ritual, which will be the highlight of this tour. During this time, you will learn about traditional Mongolian shamanism and how they offer and hallow the mother earth and nymph. The shaman will conduct the ritual and communicate with her ancestors. She will give you good advice for your future, keep you safe, and answer any questions you may have. Our expert guide will translate every word professionally to ensure there is no misunderstanding between you and the shaman. The ancestor of the shaman speaks a very ancient language, which can be challenging to understand for a simple person. Spend the night in a ger close to the shaman’s house.

Day 5. Gorkhi Terelj National Park

Today we will say goodbye to the shaman and move to Gorkhi Terelj National Park . It is 54 km away from Ulaanbaatar and one of the nearest attractions. The park is a popular sightseeing place for both locals and foreign tourists. You will have the opportunity to visit Ariyabal Monastery and hike through the national park. Spend the night in a tourist camp.

Day 6. Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex

Travel to Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex after lunch. In the afternoon, we will return to Ulaanbaatar city, where you will have the chance to buy souvenirs and some cashmere products. We will end our day with a traditional folklore concert before dinner at a restaurant. You will spend the night in a hotel.

Day 7. Departure day

Read more Written 11 September 2022

Under the agreement, I can have 100% refund when I cancelled before April 2020. Due to Covid, I need to cancel the tour in March and asked for refund. After numerous emails and empty promises from Bachi, 9 months have passed and U never get my money back. In addition, he is now uncontactable. While I understand that tourism could be worst hit by Covid. The least he could do is to reply me - and if he gives a date - to honour it. Read more Written 17 December 2020

You’re definitely in for a once in a lifetime experience. Read more Written 24 January 2020

Although Mongolian indigenous beliefs had suffered a great deal during the USSR anti-religious campaigns, more than half of the residents are proudly Buddhist. Mongolian Buddhism derives from the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism, one sect that garners a lot of Westerns' attention, but it presents its own unique characteristics. The most important spiritual Buddhist sites in the country are the Erdene Zuu Monastery in Central Mongolia , Amarbaysgalant monastery in Northern Mongolia , Baldanbereeven monastery in Eastern Mongolia , Khamar monastery in the Gobi and Gandan monastery in Ulaanbaatar.

Mongolian shaman & Buddhist monk

On the other hand, prior to the 15th century, the ruling religion of Mongolia was that of the great blue sky – “hoh tenger”. This system of traditional beliefs and practices, known in the west as Shamanism , is based on the idea that the visible world is full of invisible forces or spirits. The shaman as intermediary between the natural and spiritual world, communicates with the spirits of water, wind, fire, trees, the moon and so on, for assistance in healing, hunting or changing the weather. The healers of the Buu, as it is known in Mongolia today, are still performing these peculiar rituals.

We make special arrangements for you to stay in Buddhist monasteries; learn more about Buddhism, understand how the monks of this Tibetan philosophy dedicate themselves to spiritual awareness, and take time to relax. Mongolian Shamanism: Spiritual Practices in the Modern World

In the vast and mystical landscapes of Mongolia, the ancient tradition of Mongolian Shamanism has endured the test of time, seamlessly blending its spiritual essence with the currents of the modern world. Mongolia, with its nomadic heritage and breathtaking natural beauty, becomes a canvas for the intricate tapestry of shamanic practices. Let’s delve into the enigmatic realm of Mongolian Shamanism, exploring its roots, rituals, and its fascinating relevance in the contemporary era.

Understanding the Essence of Mongolian Shamanism

Introduction to shamanic traditions.

At the heart of Mongolian Shamanism lies a profound connection with the spiritual dimensions of nature. The word ‘shaman’ itself is derived from the Tungus tribe of Siberia, and it refers to a person who can access the spiritual realm to interact with the forces that shape existence. Mongolian Shamanism has deep roots in the country’s nomadic culture, evolving over centuries as an integral part of the daily lives of the people.

Mongolian Shamanism

The Role of the Shaman

Shamans, known as “Böö,” act as intermediaries between the human world and the spirit world. They embark on journeys into the ethereal realm to seek guidance, healing, and protection for their communities. The Böö connects with ancestral spirits, nature deities, and other ethereal entities to bring blessings, cure illnesses, and restore harmony to the lives of those seeking their aid.

Embracing Tradition in the Modern Era

Shamanic practices today.

In the modern age, Mongolian Shamanism has not faded into obscurity; instead, it has adapted to coexist with contemporary lifestyles. Amidst the bustling streets of Ulaanbaatar and the vast Mongolian steppes , shamans continue to play a pivotal role in the lives of the people. While urbanization and technological advancements have reshaped the landscape, the spiritual pulse of Shamanism continues to beat strong.

Mongolian Shamanism

Shamanism and Cultural Revival

There is a growing movement to revive and preserve Mongolian Shamanism as a crucial aspect of the country’s cultural identity. Festivals and events celebrate shamanic traditions, providing a platform for practitioners to showcase their rituals, art, and healing practices. The modern world is witnessing a renaissance of interest in these ancient spiritual customs, fostering a deep appreciation for the symbiotic relationship between man and nature.

The Shamanic Journey: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Shamanic rituals in the contemporary setting.

From the traditional yurts of the nomadic herders to urban spaces, shamanic rituals find expression in diverse settings. Ceremonies involve rhythmic drumming, chanting, and intricate dance movements, creating a captivating fusion of ancient mysticism and modern aesthetics. The allure of the shamanic journey transcends cultural boundaries, attracting individuals from various walks of life seeking spiritual insight and healing.

Mongolian Shamanism

Healing in the Modern World

In a world where the pace of life can be overwhelming, individuals often turn to ancient practices for solace and healing. Mongolian Shamanism, with its emphasis on holistic well-being, has found resonance in the modern wellness movement. Shamanic healing sessions, incorporating traditional techniques, gain popularity not only in Mongolia but also globally, offering a unique blend of spirituality and self-discovery.

Bridging the Spiritual Chasm

As we traverse the intricate landscapes of Mongolian Shamanism, it becomes evident that this ancient tradition has seamlessly woven itself into the fabric of the modern world. The rhythmic beats of the shaman’s drum echo through time, resonating with those who seek a connection with the spiritual realm. In a world marked by constant change, the enduring spirit of Mongolian Shamanism serves as a testament to the timeless dance between tradition and modernity.
