Time Out says

Channing Tatum’s woke strip show is fun but a bit basic

Magic Mike on stage feels a bit like dating in London in my thirties: all the young, hot people got it on while I sat on the sidelines. But as a voyeur at this expensive strip-meets-cabaret show, there was some serious titillation: pains are taken to remind you that it has very much been made with the female gaze in mind. The romp unfolds in a faux-club built in Leicester Square’s already-slightly-seedy (in a good way) Hippodrome Casino, based upon the Xquisite strip joint from Steven Soderbergh’s surprise 2012 cinematic   smash.

The movie’s star Channing Tatum – whose IRL undressing escapades originally informed the film’s plot – is behind this theatrical reimagining, with London the second destination of ‘Magic Mike Live’ following a hugely successful run in Vegas. But it’s important to note that co-director Tatum (who, alas, merely lends his voice to the performance) has worked with a gender-balanced team and the sense that this is a safe space for women enshrouds the entire show, despite it being filled with semi-naked men.

The plot (in the loosest sense) centres on Michelangelo – Mike to you – a waiter plucked from the crowd and trained in showing a woman a (consensual) good time by our female emcee, played by actor Sophie Linder-Lee. She sounds a bit like Jane Horrocks and makes a lot of jokes about ‘jizz’ and the tightness of her own vagina. Most of the ladies pulled to the stage for some public gyration were mega hot (so hot, it almost felt like they’d been planted), but it seemed the emcee was symbolic of the more average woman, and she was shown the sort of time we all want and deserve. It’s a sweet message (sort of), but the combo of her banterous interjections and the narrowly focussed audience interaction left me feeling very unaroused (and a teensy bit unloved).

There was just one dance that got me a bit wet, and that involved a sort-of posh paddling pool suspended from the ceiling. In it, Mike and a professional female dancer writhed half-naked in the rain as if in a XXX version of ‘The Notebook’. Hot. A ripped male cast (with more collective abs than Brazil’s Olympic diving team) has been formed from a talented troupe of international dancers, singers and musicians who are very easy on the eye and have very shiny skin when the clothes come off.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to see them show off their… talents – especially in times when toxic masculinity is under the microscope. I mean, who knew tap dancing could be so sexy? But none of the performers (including one who was the spitting image of Tatum) had that roguish charm that the cast of the movies had, or their comedic timing. And, as it happens, there’s not a thong in sight. (But actually, maybe that’s a good thing.)

Rather than provide pure raunch, a thread runs throughout the night about how, as women, we deserve to feel empowered and appreciated. ‘You are enough, just as you are,’ declares our host just before the boys hump the floor to Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’. It was like we were in a Bridget Jones time-warp. Magic Mike’s London outing doesn’t feel remotely like it’s been written for a woke London audience, especially with jokes as in-your-face as those bulges. But they were lapped up by the audience like the whipped cream used in one of the acts (a reimagining of 50 Cent’s ‘Candy Shop’). Go in the right mood with a gang of girls and this could be some kind of magic. But instead of needing a cold shower, I just left Magic Mike feeling a little bit cold.

Trying to scribble in your notebook while dodging a pair of legs akimbo? It’s not a typical problem in the life of a theatre reviewer, but then, audience lap dances and all, Magic Mike Live is not your typical theatrical experience. Instead, this much-hyped extension of Hollywood star Channing Tatum ’s film franchise about “male entertainers” is strip show, dance spectacular, and wannabe feminist entertainment all rolled into one.

Through two films, and now this stage offshoot, Tatum has certainly played a blinder in capitalising on his brief pre-Hollywood career as a n exotic dancer. Instead of red-facedly disavowing his past, he has remodelled male stripping as an enlightened art form, where strippers are choreographically-breathtaking caretakers of female desire. That Magic Mike Live wants to be a cut above your average flesh parade is signalled from the off with an opening conceit, which, without giving too much away, takes the mickey out of old-school stripper stereotypes.

As for the Magic Men? The fact one is bigged up as “The Vegan” probably tells you all you need to know. These are not Chippendale-like chumps but oh-so-sensitive millennial lotharios: diverse in nationality, ethnicity and look, but united by an eminently approachable, boy band-ish demeanour – as well as abs with the contours of upturned ice cube trays, obviously. At the centre of the show’s notional plotline is the eponymous Mike, a rosy-cheeked naif played by Sebastian Melo Taveira, who has to be initiated in the ways of seduction via various dance showcases – and a lesson, in case you feared for its post-# M e T oo credentials, in gaining a woman’s “permission”.

Sebastian Melo Taveira and Sophie Linder-Lee in Magic Mike Live

Is this the emperor wearing no clothes – bar the requisite posing pouch? Slightly. Initially, at least, the show is so determined to prove its woke credentials, it drags out the set-up for too long: there’s too much telling and not enough showing, for want of a better phrase. And while comedian Samantha Baines, as the MC guiding proceedings, has a winning stage presence, her strain of “oo er” innuendo is a tad over-emphatic. Nor, in general, does her down-to-earth British manner sit entirely comfortably with some of the more evangelical American-sounding proclamations she’s given, such as “Why don’t we celebrate womanhood and raise each other up?”

But when it comes to the show’s meat-and-(two)-veg – the dancing, it scores. While showcasing various styles, from street to tap to robot, like Strictly on Viagra, it also boasts a sequence between Mike and a female dancer that , aside from being almost indecently intimate, is simply a stunning piece of choreography, all the more so for being performed amid cascading water – It should be mentioned that the venue, the theatre at Leicester Square ’s Hippodrome Casino , has been expertly remodelled to accompany various stage-shifting wizardry. Melo Taveira, in particular, is a star: another sequence in which he performs for Baines is an exhilarating whirl of balletic spins.

It would be remiss not to mention the audience interaction, with the dancers’ various bits of bumping ‘n’ grinding climaxing in the mild pandemonium of them lap-dancing their way through the audience. On this, I must defer to my companion Alice for her verdict – men, gay or straight, being rather a spare wheel in this context. She reports: “After 20 minutes of clutching the side of my chair, I relaxed into the show and enjoyed the dancers catching my eye and occasionally stroking me as they danced past. Then the inevitable happened and one of the – very attractive – dancers ran at me and hopped onto my lap. I stopped breathing – but I have to admit I enjoyed it. I do think the dancers achieved the show’s aim of making the women in the audience feel special.” So there you are.

Indeed, it has to be said, the rest of the audience seem nothing less than ecstatic throughout; certainly, the decibel level is one that should be experienced sparingly. And if it will surely launch a thousand think pieces about male objectification, then I think the show has achieved enough of the right balance between sexy, skilful and silly to shrug them off with aplomb.

MAGIC MIKE LIVE - LAS VEGAS DESCRIPTION

Ladies! Let’s get in formation because the men of Magic Mike are here to slay our hearts and our eyes. Leave the boyfriend at home – or hell bring him – and enjoy a night of strip teases, killer dance moves and even some comedy.

Channing Tatum, star of the popular movie "Magic Mike," created this show due to the overwhelming success of the franchise. The production features alluring choreography and thrives off of audience reactions. The show has no bias towards gender: men and women alike hoot and holler because these men are too hot to keep your voices down.

Inside this fantastic theater space there isn't a bad seat in the house, with every spot perfectly situated to give every guest an eyeful of these handsome hunks. What makes this show truly spectacular is the fact that they highlight every performers unique assets, and no we aren't just talking their physical ones. These men can sing, play guitar, dance the salsa, perform aerial spins, and one even gives a lucky lady the chance to sit on his lap while he plays a drum set that descends from the ceiling.

This Vegas show has it all: stunning production value, gorgeous men, and plenty of scream-worthy audience participation.

Magic Mike Live packs the heat, so make sure to bring your fan – you’re going to need it after the first guy takes his shirt off.

Channing Tatum's 'Magic Mike Live' to debut U.S. tour in Nashville

magic mike live tour reviews

Move over Las Vegas: Music City is about to become even more magical.

Actor and dancer Channing Tatum's "Magic Mike Live" is slated to debut its first-ever  North American tour next year, and Nashville will be the show's first stop, the team behind the show announced Saturday.

After performing to sold-out, worldwide audiences in cities including Las Vegas and London, the U.S. show's premiere is slated for April 6 in Music City.

"We agonized for close to a year about where to launch the tour, and while there were many worthy candidates, Nashville rose to the top," Executive Producer Vincent Marini told USA TODAY – Tennessee. "The (Nashville) music scene is unbelievable, the number of people there to have a good time, it's so unique... it's going to add to the vibrant scene there."

Conceived and co-directed by Tatum, "Magic Mike Live" is a "thrilling, sexy, live dance and acrobatic spectacular" based on the movies Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL.

The tour will come on the heels of  the new series "Finding Magic Mike,"  an unscripted competition from Eureka Productions and Warner Bros.,  premiering on HBOMax Dec. 16.

Dubbed by its creators "a unique, immersive, live-entertainment experience," "Magic Mike Live" will begin its limited run in a brand-new, custom-built venue before heading to Miami in fall 2022.

Other stops include New York, Chicago, Seattle, Dallas and Houston, with more to be announced at a later date.

Tickets for Nashville shows went on sale Saturday and will be available through the end of June 2022.

Why start in Nashville?

The worldwide tour launched in April 2017 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas .

"We've been asked time and time again to launch a North American tour," Marini said. "So many people said, 'You have to start in Nashville.' It has a tremendous profile among our target demographic – females, especially females ages 21-25."

"There are so many great restaurants, so many great hotels. It's a vibrant entertainment scene that we want to be a part of."

Marini said his team also took into account the city's population growth.

The show is 90 minutes, Marini said, and includes a curated cocktail experience.

"The show is his baby," Marini said of Tatum's dream to launch it.

While it's unclear whether the original crew – including Magic Mike (Tatum), Richie (Joe Manganiello), Ken (Matt Bomer), Dallas (Matthew McConaughey) and Tito (Adam Rodriguez) – will appear in Nashville and other cities, viewers can expect fresh faces, Marini confirmed.

A mini-metropolis venue

The show takes place in a pop-up, two-story spiegeltent that seats 600 audience members.

Christened “The Arcadia,” it includes a glass lobby, custom bars and indoor and outdoor lounges.

"Every fabric, every seat, every chair... every bit of that space is curated to feel special and unique and that you're part of a high-end experience," Marini said. "We cram the biggest kind of technology you see on a Broadway show while also making it feel intimate."

There's also a VIP section where guests can meet the stars.

"When you are there you feel like you are in your own world," Marini said.

Where the venue will be in Music City has not been released, but Marini said it will be close to downtown.

Tickets are on sale now at MMLTour.com . Prices start at $49.

Born out of the hunka-hunka-burning-love hit movies starring Channing Tatum — 2012’s “Magic Mike” and 2015’s “Magic Mike XXL” — this show will be staged in a pop-up venue called The Arcadia, set up at the Miami Marine Stadium on Key Biscayne for a six-month limited run beginning Thursday, Oct. 13.

That means “Magic Mike Live: The Tour” will likely get a big boost when the next installment, “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” hits screens in February. Tatum is a co-director of “Magic Mike Live: The Tour,” along with Alison Faulk, the choreographer of the three movies and a former Pembroke Pines resident .

The 90-minute production is also the centerpiece of the reality competition series “Finding Magic Mike,” streaming on HBO Max. Even Steven Soderbergh, who helmed the first movie and now the third “Last Dance,” is involved with his Singani 63, a spirit created and distilled by the Oscar-winning director being featured in specialty cocktails themed around the show. (Soderbergh is also a producer of the show.)

In addition to several bars at the indoor-outdoor space, The Arcadia also houses Wildfire, a pop-up restaurant in a partnership with Miami’s Meat N’ Bone for an open-air dining concept.

Specifics aren’t set yet, but the plan is to have this new production tour throughout major cities in North America including New York, Chicago, Dallas and Toronto.

Below, learn more about “Magic Mike Live: The Tour” from a question-and-answer session with executive producer Vincent Marini.

Q: Why was South Florida chosen as the first place to launch this new tour?

A: I think we chose Miami because we just felt like the population, both local and tourist, was diverse — sort of vibrant enough that it would be the perfect place to generate the kind of excitement and buzz around the tour that we need to sustain it for the present, for the future. But it really came down to just the … unique nature of the city. You know, the unique nature of just how alive and vibrant it is.

magic mike live tour reviews

Q: Can you describe what people will see as they enter The Arcadia?

A: You walk down these landscaped pathways and if you’re going to the restaurant, it’s adjacent to the venue, so you literally go into our new Wildfire restaurant, which has a menu that was specifically curated for our guests. You hang out there, you have a great meal, and then you continue on to the venue outside. You’re in this sort of beautiful landscaped garden area with festoon lights and fire pits and drinks available for everybody … You come into the lobby — and when I say lobby, it’s sort of a misnomer — it’s almost like a giant lounge that has seating and a beautiful full bar and photo opportunities and all of that cool stuff.

The event will include an open-air, pop-up food spot, Wildfire by Meat N' Bone. The menu will includes shareables, light bites and entrees, as well as signature cocktails inspired by the show.

Q: What about the space where the show is actually staged?

A: I would say that’s the moment that most people, they just stop, because I don’t think that anybody’s ever seen anything quite like it. I certainly haven’t in all my years of touring and doing shows. It’s basically this gorgeous in-the-round venue where you have a three-story bar in front of you [and] a stage in the middle. You’re sitting on couches, and at cabaret tables, and on easy chairs and at the bar — all this mix seating arrangement. All around you is all of this incredible technology, but it’s delivered in a way that feels personal and very intimate despite the grandeur of the room. So you watch the show and, while you’re watching the show, you have this fully curated drink service with drinks that you can order to match the numbers in the show. It’s just a really special and unique experience.

Q: What about the show itself? It sounds like a full-on production.

A: I think a really good way for people to think about it is like the difference between … an old-fashioned circus with elephants and stuff and Cirque du Soleil. Like that literally is the difference. So when you come in, it is this really fun hybrid of an immersive theater experience and hysterical comedy and also one of the most exciting sexy dance and acrobatic shows you’ve ever seen … For example, during one part of the show, it actually rains in the structure. During another part of the show, you have this massive drum kit that flies in from the ceiling and that seems like it comes from nowhere. In other parts of the show, you have pianos that are moving out towards the audience and staircases full of performers.

Cast and crew posed for pictures during a media preview earlier this year in Miami that provided a sneak peek of the show's exhilarating dance routines.

Q: And what about the cast?

A: Whether you’re male or female, it doesn’t matter. If you’re a guy and you happen to be straight, you’re basically going to be wowed by the physicality of what these male and female dancers can do. And if you’re female, you’re going to be not just wowed by that, but also you’re going to be incredibly inspired by just how beautiful and how incredibly talented and attractive these guys are. So it’s sort of like a really cool combination for basically anybody that comes in. We have a very diverse cast, too. So I think when you think of a male revue, you think of a bunch of guys in a line that are all the same. That is the opposite of what this show is. We have performers from all over the world, from Europe, from Australia, from New Zealand, from America.

Q: How will you evoke the movies into this stage show?

A: I think a lot of the dancing and a lot of the dance moves that Channing did … you will recognize very quickly … They just finished shooting a third film and that third film is going to be released during our run right here in Miami. So one of the fun things is that there are a lot of crossover elements between what people are going to see here and in the third film. One of the good things about the show is they didn’t just take the films and put them onstage. Instead, they did something that is sort of an evolution of a lot of the ideas, especially in the second movie, and they’d created sort of a new piece of art, and I think that people that come to see it that love the movies are going to feel like, “Oh my God, it’s almost like I just got a third movie.”

Q: How perfect is it that Soderbergh has a spirits brand and this project has several bars?

A: He has been incredible … We started working with Steven’s team to not just have a cocktail program, but to find a way to make the cocktail program an integral part of the show. So certain numbers in the show are combined and curated with specific cocktails. If you buy one of our ultra seats, for example, which are sort of front-row couch seats, you literally get a cocktail that’s made for that moment in the show … And because of the flexibility of Singani 63, it is really wonderfully paired with so many different other kinds of spirits. We have these really unique cocktails that taste amazing but also help sort of highlight specific moments throughout the show.

Q: What made you choose the site next to the Miami Marine Stadium?

A: We needed a space that was big enough to be able to house the football-field-sized … site. It has the main tent structure, which we created in Belgium a few years ago from scratch. It’s literally a custom-built sort of venue that has literally the production value that you would normally see in a massive Broadway show or in a mini arena … But then the other part of it is we wanted a great view of the city … So it’s kind of the perfect place because it has the size that we need, but it also has the views and the feeling, like at night when you’re sitting here on the deck and watching the sunset. It gets a perfect setting for the show.
