When it comes to flying across the Pacific, there are several great business class options. These include world-class airlines such as Cathay Pacific , All Nippon Airways , and Singapore Airlines . Another airline that travelers should consider for these long-haul journeys is Korean Air.

Korean Air’s business class, known as “Prestige” class, is an extremely underrated product.

Let’s take a look at what Korean Air has to offer business class passengers and the best ways to book a flight in business class on Korean Air.

As with Korean Air first class , your business class experience with this airline is largely determined by the cabin layout of the particular aircraft you’re flying on. Knowing what to expect on your flight can help you pick a seat that will provide the most enjoyable experience for you.

To get the best business class experience on Korean Air, keep an eye on the aircraft type that will be operating the route you want to book .

Between the U.S. and Incheon International Airport (ICN) in Seoul, Korean Air’s base of operations, Korean Air flies several aircraft: the Boeing 777-300ER, the Boeing 747-8, the Boeing 787-9, and the Airbus A380.

Korean Air Business Class Bed

If Korean Air is flying a Boeing 787-9 or Boeing 747-8 on your flight, you’re in a Prestige Suite. These are also commonly referred to as Apex Suites .

Each suite provides direct aisle access and a lie-flat seat to make those long-haul flights more comfortable and easier to enjoy. These are 2 of the most important aspects of a solid business class seat since having both of these ensures you’ll rest well and won’t have to worry about people stepping over you.

If you look at the cabin layout for each of these aircraft, you’ll notice the 2-2-2 layout. While this usually indicates that only the middle section will guarantee direct aisle for both passengers, the staggered layout of Apex Suites provides aisle access to everyone — including those sitting in window seats.

Meanwhile, the Korean Air business class cabin on the A380 is in a standard 2-2-2 configuration (i.e., not Apex Suites), meaning not all passengers have direct aisle access.

This cabin layout can also be found on some of Korean Air’s Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A330 aircraft. If the route you want is operated by these aircraft, make sure you check the seat layout first. It may not seem like a big deal, but having direct aisle access is a huge plus when traveling in business class.

Some Korean 777-300ERs have an older 2-3-2 layout that isn’t staggered. These are generally considered inferior products , as quite a few seats do not have aisle access.

Lastly, we want to cover some other aircraft that could be used if an aircraft swap were to happen. Business class on the Airbus A321neo features a 2-2 layout with lie-flat seats. The Boeing 777-200ER has a 2-3-2 layout with seats that are not lie-flat.

The reason we focus on the many cabin layouts that Korean Air uses for business class is that they can dramatically impact your experience, especially if you have high expectations. Knowing what aircraft you would fly on can help determine if an award ticket is worth booking.

Korean Air Prestige Lounge

Fortunately, regardless of the aircraft, you can expect the same excellent service that Korean Air provides all business class passengers. Additionally, you get access to Korean Air’s business class lounges and other SkyTeam lounges.

Throw in a nice inflight meal, and you’ll enjoy the Korean Air business class experience!

Korean Air is a member of the SkyTeam alliance . This means you can use partner airline miles to book award seats with Korean Air. This allows for more opportunities to book a business class award on Korean Air if you have miles and points in different programs.

Korean Air SKYPASS

First, let’s start with Korean Air’s own program, SKYPASS . Although the program has undergone major changes over the years, it still provides an excellent way to redeem miles for a premium cabin on Korean Air .

The program is arguably the best way to book Korean Air premium cabins, as its mileage requirements are better than those of its partners . It also releases more award space to those booking through Korean’s program.

Many well-known programs in SkyTeam, such as Delta SkyMiles and Air France-KLM Flying Blue , use dynamic pricing when it comes to booking award tickets. This means fares can vary significantly.

Fortunately, Korean Air still uses an award chart when it comes to miles redemptions. You can find the full Korean Air award chart on its website . For Korean awards, pricing is based on seasonality.

Here is the one-way pricing for Korean Air awards between the U.S. and Korea:

For example, here is an award between San Francisco (SFO) and Seoul (ICN) that can be booked for 62,500 miles during the low season.

sfo icn korean air skypass J

Occasionally, you can also find discounts on certain routes. For example, here is an award between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Seoul (ICN) on the same day. Instead of the 62,500-mile pricing, this award can be booked for 57,500 miles.

ORD ICN Korean air skypass

Korean Air SKYPASS seasonal pricing does come with conditions:

  • Peak-season redemptions require more miles than in the off-peak season
  • If the departure and return dates are in different seasons, mileage depends on the corresponding season for each segment.
  • For itineraries to and from South Korea, peak season applies based on the boarding date for each segment.
  • For international itineraries with a connection in South Korea, peak season applies based on the boarding dates for each segment of the itinerary.

To book a Korean Air award, follow these steps:

  • Go to Korean Air’s website and select Mileage Booking .
  • Log in with your User ID or SKYPASS number.
  • Select your origin, destination, and travel dates.
  • Select Prestige Class .
  • Select your flights.
  • Click Continue to enter your information and complete the booking.

Korean Air partner availability is very tough to come by. You can get around this by booking through Korean Air SKYPASS.

Alaska Airlines

An excellent partner program worth considering for Korean Air business class awards is Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan . Although Alaska is a member of the Oneworld alliance , the airlines have a non-alliance partnership. This means you can use Alaska miles to book award a Korean Air award .

It is worth mentioning that Alaska will be implementing its new distance-based award charts in March 2024 . Pricing will increase for awards depending on which city you fly from.

For now, you can use your miles to fly to South Korea one-way for 70,000 miles in economy or 105,000 miles in business class. This may not be the best use of Alaska miles, but it’s another program worth considering.

Award space is incredibly difficult to find. There are multiple weeks where not a single award seat can be found. Here is a one-way award between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Seoul (ICN).

Korean air w Alaska miles LAX ICN

You can also book a ticket from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) for the same price.

Korean air w Alaska miles SFO ICN

There’s a caveat to booking Korean Air awards with Alaska miles. If you redeem Alaska miles for a one-way Korean Air award, you pay the same amount of miles as if you booked a round-trip award . This is a requirement for Korean Air awards.

Another quirk with redeeming Alaska miles is that certain partner-operated flights cost more miles . This is especially true with airlines such as Korean Air and Japan Airlines.

It is also worth mentioning again that award space is incredibly difficult to come by. However, if you can find the award space, it provides an excellent way to fly between the U.S. and Asia on a premier airline.

Check out our guide on the best ways to redeem Alaska Mileage Plan miles for maximum value .

Air France-KLM Flying Blue

Finally, it’s also worth considering the Air France-KLM Flying Blue program for award flights on Korean Air. Air France-KLM is another SkyTeam  partner of Korean Air, which means that Flying Blue miles can be used for Korean Air flights.

When it comes to award pricing, Flying Blue uses a dynamic pricing method . This means that award ticket prices fluctuate based on several different factors. And worst of all, the fluctuations can be quite drastic.

For example, here’s a monthlong overview of a Flying Blue award from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to Seoul (ICN) for February 2024. A one-way award can be booked for as few as 89,000 miles or as high as 586,500 miles. That’s quite a noticeable difference!

Flying blue dynamic pricing february 2024

Korean Air also has blackout dates where you cannot use your Flying Blue miles to book an award seat. You can find more information on the Korean Air blackout travel dates here .

For a Flying Blue award redemption, you can search and book online through the Air France website. To book an award ticket with Flying Blue, follow these steps:

  • Go to Air France’s website .
  • Select Book with Miles .
  • Sign in to your Flying Blue account.
  • Select your origin and destination.
  • If your travel dates are flexible, leave the departure date box empty to show a monthly award availability.
  • Select Business so the search shows Korean Air business class flights.
  • Select the appropriate flight, then fill in the passenger information.
  • To complete the booking, pay the necessary taxes and fees.

While the redemption rates with Air France-KLM Flying Blue might not be as competitive as Korean Air or Alaska when booking a Korean Air business class award, it is significantly easier to earn Flying Blue miles than it is to earn Korean Air SKYPASS miles or Alaska Airlines miles.

Air France-KLM Flying Blue is a partner of several transferable points programs, including  American Express Membership Rewards , Bilt Rewards , Chase Ultimate Rewards , Capital One Miles , Citi ThankYou Rewards , and Marriott Bonvoy .

All points programs, except Marriott Bonvoy, transfer at a 1:1 ratio. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio, with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred.

Other Ways To Book Korean Air Business Class

As Korean Air is a member of the SkyTeam airline alliance , you can use miles from several partner programs. However, be aware that the redemption rates for many of these programs won’t be competitive .

To prevent any surprises while trying to book Korean Air business class awards, it’s important to remember that Korean Air has a seasonal award chart that provides peak and off-peak pricing. To get the best pricing, book during the off-peak season.

You can book a one-way business class award on Korean Air (in the off-season) between the U.S. and South Korea for only 62,500 Korean SKYPASS miles!

Korean Air Partner Award Chart

Award space is difficult to find with partner airlines. Korean Air releases the most award space to SKYPASS members.

Korean Air SKYPASS only has 1 transfer partner : Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio.

Similarly, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan’s only transfer partner is also Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio. You get 5,000 bonus Alaska Airlines miles for every 60,000 Bonvoy points you transfer,

As mentioned above, Air France-KLM Flying Blue is a partner of American Express Membership Rewards, Brex Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Miles, Citi ThankYou Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy.

The next time you search for business class award space to Seoul on Korean Air’s site, you’ll notice they even let you know how many seats are available to be booked with Korean SKYPASS miles. This can make planning much easier.

The Apex Suite is one of the nicest business class cabin layouts on the market . If you’re flying solo, you could be sitting next to the window with almost total privacy and still have direct aisle access.

If you’re traveling with a companion, you could sit next to each other in the middle section and enjoy the flight together.

Great Business Class Service

The crews on Korean Air flights make sure that the business class experience is a special one. We’ve found that they are happy to do whatever they can to make it a trip to remember. If you have a request, just ask, and they should be able to help you.

Korean Air business class is often overlooked in favor of Asian carriers, such as EVA Air and Singapore Airlines. However, it is a great way to cross the Pacific. Korean Air flies to several airports across the U.S., which can be useful when it comes to award bookings.

Korean Air award space is challenging to find when booking with partner programs. Korean Air does release more award space to SKYPASS members.

The next time you plan on booking a business class adventure to Asia, give Korean Air a look. They could be just the ticket for you and your family!

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Moscow warns US of 'fatal consequences'; Russia suffers more than 1,000 casualties in 24 hours, Ukraine claims

Ukraine's grid operator has imposed daily energy restrictions across the country after critical infrastructure was damaged in Russian attacks. Meanwhile, one person has been killed and others injured in a strike on a recreation centre in the Kharkiv region.

Around 1.5 million men have registered for conscription in Ukraine, the defence ministry has said.

After the new law on mobilisation came into force on 18 May, military-aged men were given 60 days to update their personal data so that the state could locate them.

According to a video posted on the ministry's YouTube channel, the majority of the updates were done on the new Reserve+ online app.

In addition to using the app, Ukrainians can update their data in person at public service centres or enlistment offices.

The ministry added that 14,000 men living abroad across 124 countries had updated their credentials.

Ahead of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Britain's defence chief Admiral Sir Tony Radakin spoke about the comparisons made between the Second World War and the conflict in Ukraine.

He told Sky News he is confident we are not heading towards another world war and has every faith Ukraine would prevail in its fight.

Admiral Radakin added that by the end of June, 500,000 Russians would have died or been injured in the conflict.

Kazan's airport has imposed temporary flight restrictions for safety reasons today, Russia's aviation watchdog has said.

This is usually done in expectation of Ukrainian drone attacks.

Kazan is the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan and is located about 500 miles east of Moscow.

The region has been repeatedly attacked by drones in recent  months, an indication that Ukraine has dramatically improved its ability to strike deep within Russian territory.

Ukraine has claimed the Russian military has suffered 1,270 casualties in the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian general staff said on Monday.

If that toll, released by the Ukrainian general staff this morning, is correct, it would be one of the highest daily Russian casualty figures since the war began.

Kyiv has regularly claimed that Moscow's forces have lost more than 1,000 men a day since Russia launched a new offensive in the Kharkiv region last month.

The Kharkiv region, which borders Russia, and Kharkiv city, the administrative centre of the region, have been battered nearly daily, since the attacks intensified.

The news comes on the heels of last week's decision by President Joe Biden to approve the use of US supplied weapons to hit targets inside Russia that were involved in attacks on Ukraine's Kharkiv region.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Donald Trump risks being a "loser president" if he retakes the White House and imposes a bad peace deal on Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president said he had "no strategy yet" for what to do if Trump wins in November and that Boris Johnson had approached the Republican on his behalf, according to The Guardian.

He said if Trump were re-elected, the Republican could impose a crushing defeat on Ukraine, should he so chose.

It's widely thought Trump may end US military support for Ukraine if he gets into the White House.

"Ukraine, barehanded, without weapons, will not be able to fight a multimillion [Russian] army," Mr Zelenskyy told the paper.

"Does he want to become a loser president?" he said.

"A ceasefire is a trap," he added, saying that after a break in hostilities Vladimir Putin would "go further" and make Trump look "very weak" in the eyes of the world.

Donald Trump has previously claimed he could "end the war in 24 hours".

We're getting more warnings from Russia to the US now.

The foreign ministry told the US not to make any "mistakes that may have fatal consequences" with regards to allowing Ukraine to strike targets on Russian soil, the Interfax news agency reported.

It comes after the foreign ministry earlier warned that Ukraine using Patriot air defence systems in Russia would escalate the conflict.

Beijing has hit back at Volodymyr Zelenskyy after he accused the country of helping Russia disrupt a global peace conference in Switzerland.

China has said it would not be attending the summit because Russia would not be taking part alongside Ukraine.

The Chinese foreign ministry said it believes all efforts should be recognised by all in supporting peace measures around the Russia-Ukraine war.

Beijing has never "fanned fire or fuelled the flames", said ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, addressing a question on the peace summit.

She added that there was "no situation of China exerting pressure on other countries".

In the same press conference, Ms Mao also said China wanted to "deepen oil and gas cooperation with Russia".

Yesterday, speaking at the Shangri-La defence forum in Singapore, Asia's premier security conference, Mr Zelenskyy said China is pressuring other countries and their leaders not to attend the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, scheduled for 15-16 June.

"Russia, using Chinese influence in the region, using Chinese diplomats also, does everything to disrupt the peace summit," he said.

"Regrettably this is unfortunate that such a big independent powerful country as China is an instrument in the hands of Putin."

Russia has said discussions over allowing Ukraine to use Patriot MIM-104 air defence systems over Russian territory show the West is on a "path of escalation".

The state-run TASS news agency cited Moscow's foreign ministry as making the remarks today.

"Russia will take all measures to thwart such threats," the ministry added.

In April, the Pentagon said it would "rush" Patriot air defence missiles and artillery ammunition to Ukraine as part of its new $6bn military aid package.

However, Patriot systems for launching the missiles will not be sent, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said at the time.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been forthright in saying the weapons are needed urgently and their absence is costing Ukrainian lives.

"Patriot" stands for "Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target" and is a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather air defence system designed to counter tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft.

The American-made missiles are produced by Raytheon in Massachusetts and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Florida.

The system is used by the US and some of its allies, including Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Poland, Sweden, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Romania, Spain, and Taiwan.

Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto has said his country has not yet decided whether to join a global peace summit aimed at helping to end the war in Ukraine.

He said that while he respected efforts by Switzerland to achieve peace, he doubted whether the summit made sense if "there aren't both parties to the war" present.

Russia will not attend the summit, which is being held later this month.

Hungary has repeatedly opposed Ukraine's accession to NATO and the EU, sanctions on Russia, undermined Western aid efforts for Ukraine, and maintained close relations with Moscow throughout the full-scale war.

In mid-May, it vetoed a Council of Europe resolution to officially recognise and support Volodymyr Zelenskyy's 10-point peace formula.

"If both sides of the war are not represented, I think it is a legitimate question whether the whole summit makes sense in terms of the ultimate goal, which is to seek peace," Mr Szijjarto said.

"We [Hungary] believe that the peace summit has real meaning and gives the greatest hope for peace if both sides are at the table."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is making a surprise appearance in the Philippines today, thanking it for its participation in a high-level peace summit later this month.

In their first in-person meeting in Manila, the Ukrainian president thanked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr for his "clear position" on Russia's "occupation of our territories".

"I'm happy to hear today from you that you participate (in) our basic steps to the peace," Mr Zelenskyy told his Philippine counterpart during their bilateral meeting, speaking in English.

He also announced that Ukraine would open an embassy in Manila this year.

Headquarters of the Korea AeroSpace Administration in Sacheon, about 300 kilometers south of Seoul/ Yonhap

With the opening of the nation's full-fledged space agency, Korea is set to make its mark on the global space stage, aiming to transform into a powerhouse and join the elite space race led by the private industry.

The Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) will open its doors Monday, focusing on fostering local companies that can play key roles in space development projects, and helping the country develop a global-level space industry and space economy.

"Until now, the country's space development projects have been led by the government," Yoon Young-bin, KASA's inaugural chief, said earlier. "The most important role of the space agency will be supporting the private sector to lead space development."

He pointed out that the world's space industry is moving toward the so-called "new space" era, where private companies are actively leading innovation in space technologies with more economic feasibility.

"The global paradigm is shifting," Yoon said, noting that top space companies, such as SpaceX, have developed reusable space rockets and launched a group of small satellites with capabilities similar to medium- and large-sized satellites.

To keep up with this trend, Korea established KASA, the Korean version of the United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), located in Sacheon, approximately 300 kilometers south of Seoul.

The 293-member agency will lead the nation's space programs, such as the moon and Mars exploration, and bolster Korean companies' competitiveness in the global space industry.

Two years ago, the Korean government announced its plan to land a homegrown spacecraft on the moon in 2032 and Mars in 2045 as part of efforts to become one of the top-five global space powers.

Korea was a latecomer in the highly advanced industry but is currently considered the seventh-strongest space power after having successfully developed the 200-ton space rocket Nuri in recent years.

The country also plans to develop a next-generation rocket, named KSLV-III, and make three launches in 2030, 2031 and 2032, with the third launch carrying a moon spacecraft aboard.

Experts at home and abroad welcomed the establishment of KASA, expecting the agency to help Korea make a significant leap in the space sector and participate more in international cooperative research projects.

"It is difficult to have international competitiveness in the space industry without technological development in various related fields," Kim Seung-jo, former chief of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, said. "But Korea has the world-best level of cutting-edge technologies in most of the fields."

He called on KASA to set future-oriented goals for space projects that need patience and passion from a long-term perspective.

Earlier this month, NASA officials also expressed expectations for expanded space cooperation with Seoul following the establishment of KASA, underscoring the importance of Korea's expertise for international space projects.

They also advised KASA to "learn lessons" from failures.

To leverage expertise and experience from the world's top space power, KASA has named John Lee, a retired senior executive from NASA, as its deputy administrator in charge of space missions and policies, the second-highest position at the new institution.

John Lee said he will work to adapt the U.S. space agency's strengths to KASA in a Korean context and align Korea's space projects with international standards.

Meanwhile, the local space industry voiced hopes for KASA, asking it to provide more consistent support to big and small companies, and facilitate their participation in international space projects.

"The country's space projects have been centered around the government and big companies until now, but I hope KASA can also support smaller-sized companies that have been overlooked," Park Jae-pil, the founder of space startup Nara Space, said.

"There are many Korean companies with space technologies that can contribute to international projects, and I believe KASA will open a channel for that," he added.

KASA aims to foster more than 2,000 space-related companies and create about 500,000 new jobs in the field. (Yonhap)

Korean Air ranked second best airline globally by AirlineRatings

korean air travel agent

Korean Air has secured second place among the top 25 airlines worldwide in AirlineRatings’ 2024 Airline Excellence Awards, and has been named the Best Long Haul Carrier in North Asia.

AirlineRatings.com, an Australia-based aviation media, evaluates over 440 airlines on multiple assessment criteria, including safety, product ratings, passenger reviews, fleet age, and environmental commitment. Korean Air was awarded “Cargo Airline of the Year” in 2022 and 2023, and “Best Airline in North Asia” in 2023.

The airline recently accelerated the modernization of its fleet, making significant investment in next-generation aircraft to offer greater passenger comfort and to meet the airline’s sustainability goals. The airline in March signed a contract with Airbus to purchase 33 A350s. In addition to fleet upgrades, Korean Air has implemented advanced safety measures, including rigorous maintenance protocols, crew training programs, and the adoption of cutting-edge technology to monitor and manage flight operations.

The airline also further enhanced its in-flight services by introducing new in-flight menus like its Korean vegan meal, and collaborated with world-renowned sommelier Marc Almert to introduce new wine options across all cabin classes.

“Korean Air just gets better and better with passenger approval ratings. The airline is at the forefront of innovation and it has invested in a young state-of-the-art fleet built around the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A321neos.” said Geoffrey Thomas, Editor-in-Chief at AirlineRatings. “Its rankings reflect the dedication of management and staff to delivering excellence across the airline.”
