1 Day Kakadu Tour from Darwin Itinerary

Starting off nice and early from Darwin, our first stop is the Adelaide River, where you can choose from two enjoyable activities. Join the Jumping Crocodile Cruise to navigate down the river in search of local saltwater crocodiles. With insightful commentary from your guide, you’ll learn all about these fearsome creatures and their habitat as you observe them leap up to devour a delicious meaty snack. The second option is to explore the wetlands of the Fogg Dam Conservation Centre via walks and observation points. Traditional lands of the Limilngan-Wulna people, the area is home to a wealth of bird and animal species.

Then we’ll head into Kakadu and visit the Bowali Visitor Centre and Murrawuddie Gallery, where you can wander the displays to discover more about the Kakadu environment and local Aboriginal culture. After lunch, we continue deep into Kakadu to view Cahills Crossing . Look out for saltwater crocodiles at the dangerous river crossing and see if you can see any overturned vehicles that didn’t make it across.

Not far from Cahills Crossing is our final stop, Ubirr Rock. This impressive gallery is home to some of the world’s most important rock art, dating back thousands of years. Once a regular camping spot for travelling Aboriginals, the paintings depict food animals such as turtles and fish, cultural stories involving Rainbow Serpent and document early contact of the Indigenous people with Europeans. There is even a painting of a Tasmanian Tiger, extinct on the mainland for over two thousand years, which stands as a testament to the age and importance of these paintings.

After you have walked through the gallery, climb to the top of Ubirr Rock for incredible views over the Nadab Floodplains. Admire this amazing view before we make our journey back to Darwin.

Please note: our Top End tour itineraries are subject to change and may not be exactly as described when you travel due to weather conditions, park closures for traditional landowner ceremonies and unforeseen circumstances.

Optional Upgrades

Join the Jumping Crocodile Cruise for the opportunity to view the Top End’s fearsome saltwater crocodiles in the wild. We'll first travel through Litchfield National Park, an area famous for its  pristine waterfalls and swimming holes . Continuing on to Katherine we'll spend two nights at the luxury Cicada Lodge and explore  Katherine Gorge . Day 1 - Litchfield touring

Depart your Darwin accommodation at 7am for the beginning of your 7 day safari through the Northern Territory’s ‘Top End’.

Our destination today is Katherine and en route we’ll visit  Litchfield National Park . Located just over an hour south of Darwin Litchfield comprises of a central sandstone plateau which supports rich woodland flora communities. Patches of monsoon rainforest thrive in the deep, narrow gorges and wildlife such as wallabies and birds flourish in the Park.

Two of Litchfield’s most famous waterholes are Buley Rockhole and Florence Falls, both of which we will visit today. Here you will have the opportunity to swim and also snorkel in the crystal clear pool below Florence Falls and relax in the cascading pools at Buleys.

a-luxury-tour-of-kakadu-and-the-top-end-florence-falls

Today we will also visit the Magnetic Termite Mounds. These gigantic termite mounds stand up to 2m tall, having been erected in a north-south orientation which acts as a built in temperature control. These ‘tombstone’ like structures make the area look eerily like a giant cemetery.

After a picnic lunch we’ll travel to Tolmer Falls. The caves near Tolmer Falls are home to the rare Orange Horseshoe and Ghost Bats.

Next, we will depart Litchfield and continue south to Nitmiluk National Park, home of the Jawoyn Aboriginal people and Katherine Gorge. Once in Katherine we’ll head straight for the Gorge and our accommodation at Cicada Lodge.

Overnight: Cicada Lodge

Day 2 - Katherine Gorge touring

After breakfast, we’ll take to the air and explore Katherine Gorge by helicopter. This aerial journey will take us over all 13 spectacular gorges and will touch down in a remote section of the Park. On the ground, your guide will show you a special rock art site painted by the local Jawoyn people many thousands of years ago. Here you’ll also have the chance to take a dip in your very own private swimming hole next to a waterfall. Continue back to the heli-pad.

a-luxury-tour-of-kakadu-and-the-top-end-scenic-heli-flight

Next, we will travel to the Cutta Cutta Caves. These limestone caves are unique to this area and have formed a large underground system of caverns covered in stalactites and stalagmites.

Continue on to the Katherine Hot Springs, a nice place for a dip before heading back to Cicada Lodge.

Late-afternoon we will join a Nabilil Dreaming Sunset Dinner Cruise through Katherine Gorge. Sit back and relax and discover the stories and ways of the local Jawoyn people as we cruise along the first two gorges. The tour includes a three course candle light dinner, featuring fresh, local Australian produce cooked on board, and a complimentary glass of sparkling wine.

Day 3 - Kakadu National Park touring

This morning we’ll check out of our accommodation and travel by 4WD to the world heritage listed Kakadu National Park. En route we’ll stop for morning tea at Edith Falls.

Covering almost 20,000 square km of exceptional natural beauty and unique biodiversity, Kakadu is one of very few places World Heritage listed for both its cultural and its natural values. Kakadu is home to the Bininj and Mungguy Aboriginal people who have inhabited this area for thousands of years.

Our first stop in Kakadu will be Moline Rockhole, a special permit area in which only a few select operators are permitted to access; guaranteeing minimal crowds. The small waterfall and waterhole below the falls is a great place to cool down and relax.

a-luxury-tour-of-kakadu-and-the-top-end-gunlom

Next, we’ll visit Gunlom Falls, another great swimming hole. A 15 minute steep climb to the rock pools above the falls provides sweeping views across the bushlands of Kakadu as well as great hiking opportunities.

Continue north through Kakadu late-afternoon to our accommodation in Cooinda.

Overnight: Yellow Water Villas

Day 4 - Kakadu National Park touring

This morning we’ll continue to explore more of Kakadu, firstly heading to Nawurlandja Lookout. A short climb takes us up the sloping sandstone to provide views of the sun rising across Anbangbang Billabong, Nourlangie Rock and the Arnhem Land escarpment.

Continue to the nearby site Nourlangie Rock, an area home to various Aboriginal rock art and occupation sites. Aboriginal people have inhabited this area for twenty thousand years, sheltering under Nourlangie Rock and utilising the natural resources around them. The results of this occupation can still clearly be seen and understood today with the various rock paintings of animals, people and spirits. Your guide will give detailed explanations of the stories behind the rock art and the surrounding area.

After Nourlangie we’ll make our way to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge). Enjoy a scenic 1km walk along the edge of Barramundi Creek before arriving at the base of Barramundi Falls. Here you have the opportunity to swim or snorkel in the large plunge pool below the falls and discover an array of aquatic life.

a-luxury-tour-of-kakadu-and-the-top-end-yellow-waters

Next, we’ll travel to Cooinda and join at 2hr cruise on the famous Yellow Water Billabong. On this picturesque waterway you will have the opportunity to view a large variety of birdlife as well as salt water crocodiles in their natural environment. Learn more about the wildlife on the billabong from your knowledgeable guide who will make the cruise both fascinating and informative.

Return to Cooinda after the cruise, keeping an eye out for nocturnal wildlife en route.

Overnight: Yellow Water Villas

Day 5  - Arnhem Land touring

After breakfast we travel to the northern region of Kakadu National Park to Cahill’s Crossing on the East Alligator River, where we enter Arnhem Land. A 15 km scenic drive to Gunbalanya Aboriginal community provides some of the best driving views in the Top End with floodplains covered in bird life and water lilies running up alongside the Arnhem Land escarpment.

Upon arrival at Gunbalanya we will visit the renowned Injalak Arts and Craft Centre. Here you have the opportunity to meet and watch traditional local artists in action before departing with our Aboriginal guide to be shown around Injalak Hill's very extensive rock art sites. Spend the morning experiencing some of the best Aboriginal rock art in Australia. The area is home to a unique style of ‘x-ray art’, dating back many thousands of years. Listen to ancient dreamtime stories and learn more about Indigenous culture in the heart of Arnhem Land from your local Indigenous guide.

a-luxury-tour-of-kakadu-and-the-top-end-rock-art

Next, we’ll depart Arnhem Land and travel back through Kakadu to Bamurru Plains.

Plains is a luxury wilderness lodge located on a 300 square kilometre private buffalo station on the floodplains of the famous Mary River system on the western boundary of Kakadu National Park.

Arrive in at Bamurru mid-afternoon where we will stay for the next 2 nights.

Overnight: Bamurru Plains

DAY 6 - Bamurru Plains touring

Today we will explore Bamurru by 4wd and airboat, with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the serenity.

Bamurru Plains:

The camp has ten safari bungalows built amongst the pandanus vegetation on the edge of the wetlands. Each of them has been built with privacy uppermost in mind and to take advantage of the spectacular views across the wetlands. Each bedroom has views towards the floodplains.

a-luxury-tour-of-kakadu-and-the-top-end-wetlands

The focal point for dining and gathering with other guests, the lodge building has a quieter library area with reference books and some privacy from the more communal areas in the rest of the building, which includes the dining area. The front deck features a BBQ firepit area, a wet edge swimming pool with views across the floodplains and a covered lounge area for sitting out the heat in the middle of the day.

A select open bar (wines, beers and soft drinks) is included in the tariff and this is generally accessed on a self-service basis. Spirits are available for purchase.

Kakadu's Jeffrey Lee plans to invite tourists to Koongarra despite ongoing park closures

After years of frustration about the  lengthy closures  of key attractions across Northern Territory's Kakadu National Park, visitors may soon get the opportunity to see an area that has never been opened to the public.

A decade after persuading the federal government to add his uranium-rich land into Kakadu, Djok traditional owner Jeffrey Lee wants to start inviting tourists to Koongarra.

He refused to accept hundreds of millions of dollars in uranium mining royalties because he wanted to protect the rock art, springs, plants and animals he would like to show travellers.

Jeffrey Lee stands at a gate on a dirt road in Kakadu.

"There's a lot of other ways we can make money, than destroying country, by getting visitors from overseas and Australia," he said.

"I'd like visitors to come and learn about our rock art and culture and have a swim."

Jeffrey Lee points to rock art on a rock wall in Kakadu.

The 55-year-old retired park ranger said initially he wanted to permit small numbers to visit Koongarra, on guided tours he would lead.

But first he needed advice about how to establish a small tourism business.

"This is my first time, and this is where I'm looking where I can get advice from other family who already got tourism on country," Mr Lee said.

"I don't know much about that tourism side."

Jeffrey Lee holds a stone inside a rock structure in Kakadu.

The potential of opening another area of Kakadu to tourism is exciting to tour operator Greig Taylor.

Visiting Mr Lee's Burrungkuy Nourlangie Rock area, which is already open to the public, is one of his tour highlights.

"Any access that we can get to any part of Kakadu is a bonus, and the tourism industry is looking for partnerships," he said.

"If Jeffrey is keen to engage and work with the industry in developing a product, we're right there."

Greig Taylor guides a tour with two people at Nourlangie rock in Kakadu.

Mr Lee said he might consider a partnership, but would prefer his and most other Kakadu operations to be run by its Bininj and Mungguy people.

"In future I'd like to see more Bininj running their own tour," he said.

"We want more Bininj rangers to be stepping up the ladder; I want to see Binning running the park."

Mr Taylor is particularly keen to see more areas of Kakadu opened to tourism because two of its most popular attractions, Gunlom Falls and Twin Falls, have been closed for five years.

The federal government's Parks Australia, which jointly manages Kakadu with traditional owners, has also struggled in recent years to repair wet season road damage and remove crocodiles from other popular sites including the Jim Jim Falls in time to get them open for the peak tourist season starting in June.

"Last year we didn't even get those areas until the second week of the school holidays, that's just not acceptable or sustainable from a tourism perspective," Mr Taylor said.

"So there needs to be more human resources, and maybe they need to replan their work scope so we can get these sites open to visitors."

In a statement, Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said: "Part of the reason the park is opening later is due to the wet season running later."

The wet season did run later in Kakadu in 2023 and 2022, but not in 2021 or 2020.

Queensland tourist Kristy Hendrie said finding some areas closed had been disappointing.

"It's been beautiful, but a lot of the waterfalls and the waterholes that we wanted to go to were closed," she said.

On Wednesday, Parks Australia announced it would plead guilty in Darwin Local Court to prosecution by the NT's sacred sites watchdog.

Director of national parks Ricky Archer released a statement offering "deep and sincere apologies to traditional owners for the wrongs of the past" and an assurance "lessons learned from this situation will improve how Parks Australia executes projects".

Wurrkbarbar senior Gunlom custodian Joshua Hunter said traditional owners were now considering reopening Gunlom, possibly next year, but first wanted assurances they would get compensation and other financial assistance.

Joshua Hunter

"We've sacrificed our area to provide a visitor friendly place for everyone to visit so we're really looking forward to what the government will put on the table before we re-open Gunlom," he said.

"We've lived our two decades in poverty, there were times when my own mother lived in a caravan just outside of the Gunlom road, and they preferred to spend money on fixing the road for our visitors, while traditional owners lived many years in poverty.

"We're in this deal together, and they should come to the table with better living standards, better funding and better opportunities for us to thrive as indigenous people."

Ms Plibersek said she "will take all steps necessary to repair the relationship with the traditional owners of Kakadu".

She added her government is "fixing 212 homes in Kakadu" and its May budget included "$11 million for remediation of Jabiru".

Asked whether it is assisting traditional owners start more tourism businesses, Parks Australia provided a statement that it has facilitated "workshops between the tourism industry and Bininj and Mungguy and business development workshops".

The Gunlom dispute has heightened tension over the park's joint management among traditional owners who have felt they have not been given enough say about how Federal Government funding is spent in Kakadu.

Traditional owners closed the popular Ubirr lookout for the 2021 season.

Parks Australia said "Bininj and Mungguy are consulted on park management in accordance with consultation guidelines developed by the Kakadu Board".

Jeffrey Lee said he was watching how the government was prepared to deal with traditional owners now.

"We can close things; we can close half the park," he said.

"If I say I want to close my area, it can be very difficult."

But the Djok traditional owner said he would prefer to work with the federal government to achieve his tourism plan.

"If people from Canberra can walk with us, and help us mob start our business, and look after country the way we want to look after country, that will change a lot of things.

"I know it takes time, but in the future, it's going to happen."
