Mediterranean
Where cuisine and culture converge
Once home to ancient civilizations and famous philosophers, the Mediterranean continues to define tradition. Departing from Rome, Athens or Barcelona, sail into Marseille and bask in the beauty of Provence’s lavender fields. Explore Pompeii’s ruins while visiting Naples. Or taste cuisine as rich as the culture with fresh vegetables in Santorini and hand-thrown pizzas in Naples.
British Isles
Legendary tunes and storybook tales
On a European cruise to the British Isles, walk in the footsteps of royalty, like the kings, queens and musical empires before you. Travel along the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle, where bagpipes greet you. See the world’s oldest book, The Book of Kells, at Trinity College Library. Or walk along Abbey Road and visit the old stomping grounds of one of the world’s most famous boybands. With Princess, fortresses and musical memoirs await.
Scandinavia & Baltic
Viking history as deep as the fjords
Legendary tales come alive on a European cruise to Scandinavia. Explore Baltic heritage with an overnight visit to Stockholm, where you can visit the Royal Palace or sail the sparkling waterways of its 14 islands while learning about Sweden along the way. Walk Tallinn’s cobbled streets and admire the preserved medieval architecture from its 13th-century origins.
Norway & Iceland
Natural splendors abound
Natural attractions abound in Norway and Iceland, your gateway to dazzling fjords, cascading waterfalls and black-sand beaches. Navigate through Geiranger’s winding waterways to Seven Sisters Waterfall where currents rush 800 feet down the rugged cliffside. Or take a dip in the rejuvenating waters of the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik. Admire Mother Nature’s masterpieces on some of our best European cruises.
Transatlantic
The best of land and sea
Indulge in a classic sailing experience and revel in life at sea as you travel across the Atlantic. While on board, luxuriate in the best that your ship has to offer — like the Princess Luxury Bed and cuisine made from scratch. Then explore ports from Iceland to Greece and cities between. Get to know the unique personalities of your ship and the destinations visited, only on a Transatlantic European cruise with Princess.
Cruisetours
More time to explore
European cruisetours combine our traditional cruises with four to eight nights on land exploring world-famous regions. As a part of your trip, enjoy expert guides, hotel stays and daily meals. Experience seamless transportation from land to ship before setting sail to the dream destinations on your itinerary. See Europe in a way that only Princess can show you.
European Cruise Departure Ports
- London (Southampton)
Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.
Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.
Copenhagen boasts equal parts charm and culture. Before you set sail on your European cruise, indulge in thrills at Tivoli Gardens, and ride a bike along Nyhavn’s waterways, passing multi-colored homes on the way. Tour ancient fortresses, like Kronborg Castle, which inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Or make a stop to see Copenhagen’s most famous symbol, The Little Mermaid.
From double-decker buses and telephone booths to medieval castles and monuments, experience the best of the city and countryside on a European cruise from Southampton. Ride on the London Eye, and watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Then head west and walk the hallways of Windsor Castle, or travel even further to learn about the mystery of Stonehenge.
Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.
Why Cruise in Europe
With Princess, travel effortlessly through Mediterranean beaches, British Isles, Russian palaces and Norwegian fjords. On a European cruise, meet locals who call these destinations home, see world-famous landmarks and relive stories of the past.
Cruising vs Land Vacations
The value of vacation
Revel in first-class experiences without the first-class price tag. On a European cruise, unpack once and save on transportation and baggage fees as well as dining and entertainment costs. Independent land travel through Europe adds up fast — between accommodations, restaurants, train travel, taxis and more. But with Princess, you can spend more time exploring Europe and less time checking into your next hotel.
Experience Different Seasons of Europe
Sail into the season
See the many faces of the world with seasonal European cruise sailings from Princess. In the spring, shop France’s colorful outdoor markets for hand-crafted souvenirs. Frolic through Norway’s landscapes when they fully bloom in summer. Or visit Italy in the fall to taste the first wines of the season.
Sail Aboard Our Newest Ships
Your best-in-class travel companion
Built in Italy, our newest ships first set sail in international waters for their inaugural season. On a European cruise, you can be one of the first to travel aboard these vessels, adding a whole new level of excitement and opportunity to your trip. Plus these are the first ships designed with Princess® MedallionClass®, making them the best European cruises at sea.
See Famous Landmarks
Where history books come alive
Between the castles, towers and ruins, Europe is teeming with ancient architecture. On a European cruise, sail into Le Havre and choose to visit the beaches of Normandy or ascend the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Walk through the Colosseum in Rome, and stop by Livorno to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Or explore hidden gems — like Belfast’s Giant’s Causeway.
A Vacation for Every Generation
Adventures for all
In Europe, there are activities for all. With exciting tours through age-old cities, kids can see textbooks come to life and return with their own stories to tell. Parents can relish in romance and relaxation amidst fairytale landscapes, and grandparents can relive stories of memories past with their loved ones. Whether on board or ashore, find activities created with every type of guest in mind on a cruise to Europe.
Enjoy the Convenience of Cruising
Travel reimagined
See multiple international cities without the hassle of transportation or additional planning. Cruise from one destination to the next with world-class entertainment, fresh food and relaxing accommodations at your fingertips. When you return to the ship, continue your exploration with unique activities and global cuisine, or enjoy the familiar comforts of home with your favorite foods — all on our best European cruise ships.
European cruise excursions
From thrilling kayak voyages in Flåm to relaxing beach days in Mykonos, find shore excursions that match every guest’s preference with Princess. In Rome, taste local delicacies like wood-fired pizza, fine wines and homemade gelato. Walk past medieval buildings in Bergen, stopping by the Schøtstuene Museum on your way back. Or hike Mt. Fløien and revel in panoramic views of Norway’s woodlands, fjords and cityscapes.
Local connections
Don’t just cruise to Europe, experience it alongside those lucky enough to call it home. Our Local Connections program introduces you to each region with award-winning shore excursions. Enjoy a food and wine pairing in the home of a local Tuscan farmer. Capture snapshots of Glasgow’s breathtaking scenery with the help of a Scottish photographer. Or set out on a guided beer walk through Copenhagen.
More ashore
Dive even deeper into the flourishing cultures abroad with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays on select European cruise itineraries. Visit one of Dublin’s pubs and enjoy a night of Irish song, dance and Guinness. Go glamping in Alta and spend the night under the evening sky for a chance to see the Northern Lights. Or dance into the evening at a party in Mykonos — an island famous for its nightlife.
European Cruise Onboard Experience
Experience Europe right on board. Our onboard activities bring the diverse cultures of the region directly to you. Sing, dance, feast and celebrate in a way that only Europe — and Princess — knows how.
Accommodations
Your home away from home
Your stateroom is where you rest and recharge between adventures. That’s why every room is equipped with the expertly designed Princess Luxury Bed, 100% Jacquard-woven cotton linens and our SLEEP program created by a board-certified sleep expert. From interior cabins to full suites, unwind in any of our staterooms, and enjoy peace of mind with the option of connected rooms for families of four or more traveling together.
A sensory tour of Europe
From the spice of Moroccan tagine to the sweetness of Greek Baklava, Europe’s flavor profile is incredibly diverse. On board your European cruise, enjoy English favorites — like bangers and mash or shepherd’s pie — during a British-style pub lunch. Then head ashore to savor fresh ingredients and iconic dishes, including fresh Greek salads and Italian gelato. From ship to shore, taste the best of abroad with Princess.
Sip and savor
Home to some of the best vineyards in the world, Europe knows a thing or two about wine — and so does Princess. Visit Vines wine bar, one of the best-stocked cellars at sea, and sample an assortment of reds and whites. Unwind with a drink in hand at Crooners, a vintage Sinatra-era cocktail lounge. Or enjoy a glass from the comfort of your stateroom balcony while taking in views of Europe’s most inspiring shorelines.
Cultural Immersion
Dive even deeper
On a European cruise, explore destinations even at sea. Learn from local experts — like musicians, dancers, athletes and chefs — who come on board to show you the unique personality of each region. Or listen to stories from international crew members, many of whom call these lands home. Even kids can awaken their sense of wonder with our Youth and Teen Centers, created in partnership with Discovery™ and Animal Planet™.
Entertainment
Find your joy
Embark on adventures by day, and indulge in entertainment by night. Watch Movies Under the Stars® at our 300-square-foot outdoor theater. Attend original productions from Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz, composer of Wicked . Or learn traditional moves, like Flamenco or Irish stepdance, and listen to popular music from the destinations on your itinerary. On a European cruise with Princess, the choice is yours.
Celebrations & Romance
Love blooms on The Love Boat
It's difficult to imagine something more romantic than sailing through the alluring cities and charming countryside of Europe. While on board your European cruise, we cater to your sentimental side with private dining on your balcony — like breakfast for two or a sunset dinner — honeymoon packages, flowers and chocolates delivered to your room and couples-only massages in the Sanctuary.

The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe
Jun 7, 2024 • 8 min read
Appreciate the beautiful architecture of Budapest from the Danube © Sanga Park / Shutterstock
Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.
By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.
The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise.
1. Northern Rhine (Germany)
From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities
The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.
2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)
Explore intriguing towns in this border land
The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.
3. Rhône (France)
Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France
Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .
4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)
Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe
The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.
5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)
Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east
The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.
6. Douro (Portugal)
See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine
The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.
7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)
A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe
Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.
8. Seine (France)
Cruise out of Paris through northern France
Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.
9. Main (Germany)
A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube
Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
10. Moselle (Germany)
An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region
Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .
How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?
The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.
While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.
Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.
When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?
Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.
Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.
Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.

Mediterranean cruise packing list: What to pack when cruising Europe
Packing for a cruise in the Mediterranean has unique challenges. As an American, you'll definitely be flying rather than driving to your cruise port, so over-packing isn't a good option (unless you want to pay extra fees). Plus, the Mediterranean region is large and cruise ships regularly call at over a dozen different countries. The weather in the northern Mediterranean city of Venice can differ greatly from that of the cruise ports in the southern Greek islands like Santorini and Crete. Your packing list will have to adjust — especially if you're on a long cruise that covers lots of ground.
After five Mediterranean cruises , I've learned some tips and tricks to pack everything I need for cruising in Europe without needing a second suitcase or paying overweight baggage fees. Here, I share my packing secrets and a handy Mediterranean cruise packing list to streamline your vacation preparation.
For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
What to pack for a Mediterranean cruise
The dress code of your cruise line and how you expect to spend your time play a big role in what goes into your suitcase. On most cruise lines sailing the Mediterranean, you'll be fine with casual attire. Toss in a few items that allow you to dress up a notch in the evenings, and you'll have your onboard wardrobe all set.
How you expect to spend your time on vacation is also key. Your Mediterranean cruise shore excursions might include anything from hiking volcanoes and ancient ruins to attending cooking classes or wine tastings. You may be touring museums, cathedrals or mosques on some days and taking boat rides, lounging on the beach or doing water sports on others.
I find it useful to organize my packing around the activities I have planned, but throw in a few items that allow for spontaneity. For example, I always pack a swimsuit, even if I don't have any water activities planned. You never know when the hot tub will start calling your name.
Daytime clothing
Shorts, lightweight shirts, capris and sundresses all work well for most daytime activities on and off the ship throughout the Mediterranean during the warmer summer months. Plan on adding long pants and layers for spring and fall cruises. Hats, caps, visors and sunglasses are a good addition for excursions any time of year, as is a long-sleeve sun protective shirt. If your onshore adventures will take you to a church or mosque, plan to bring clothing that covers the knees and shoulders.
And remember that not all Mediterranean ports of call are touristy. In some cases, you will be walking city streets alongside businesspeople. Couple that with the fact that Europeans tend to dress a bit more conservatively than Americans, and you will find that what would fit in on a port day in Rome is a bit dressier than what you'd wear in The Bahamas.
Evening wear
Mainstream cruise lines in the Mediterranean like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises have casual buffet dining options if you prefer not to dress up for dinner, as does Viking. For most main dining rooms and specialty dining venues, eveningwear consists of slacks or skirts with nice shirts. If there is a dedicated formal night, jazz things up with accessories or a sparkly top, or go all-out with a suit or cocktail dress. Jackets and ties for men would be optional except on formal nights, where they would fit in nicely on most ships.

This is the clothing category that can bust your plan to pack lighter, but it's important to have the right footwear in Europe. With so many places to explore on foot, the most important shoes to pack for a Mediterranean cruise are comfortable walking shoes.
Beyond that, you'll need flip-flops or water shoes if there's a beach in your cruise plan, and a dressy pair of shoes for the evening. You could get by with a nice pair of deck-style shoes like Sperry's or hiking sandals like Tevas or Keens for almost everything if you can color coordinate with your outfits. I recently managed a nine-day cruise in the Mediterranean with a pair of slip-on hiking shoes, a pair of black Teva sandals and one pair of black heels, which I could have done without (and been more comfortable).
The number one piece of gear for a Mediterranean cruise is a day bag or backpack. I use a fold-up lightweight nylon backpack that allows me to carry snacks, bottled water, sunscreen and even a beach towel — anything I think I might need on a day in port — but still has plenty of room to stash my souvenirs. It's designed to zip up into its own built-in pouch the size of a large wallet, so it takes up little packing space or weight.
If you are a snorkeler, pack your own mask and snorkel so you can take advantage of surprise opportunities to see what's beneath those brilliant blue Mediterranean waves at the beaches of Sardinia, Santorini or even in Croatia. If you're a hiker, consider collapsible hiking poles — which can come in handy on walks to hilltop ruins. Photographers will want their camera gear if their cellphone camera won't cut it for vacation photos.
Packing tips for a Mediterranean cruise
It's easy to overpack for a Mediterranean cruise. To avoid that, choose a neutral base color like black, navy or tan and plan your outfits to mix and match that color scheme. Pick clothing items you can dress up or down as the event requires. Neutral colors will make you feel more at home throughout most of the Mediterranean, where daytime fashion is rarely flashy.
Keep your materials lightweight for hot summer afternoons, but plan for a possible added layer on board the ship, where air conditioning can be chilly. Lightweight layers also come in handy on cruises in March, April, October and November when daytime temperatures can be in the 50s and 60s.
I can get through a weeklong cruise with a base of two pairs of black shorts, a pair of black capris, a pair of casual black slacks and a black tank dress. I mix those up with lightweight shirts or tanks each day, dressier tops at night, some scarves and a black sheer blouse. Keeping clothes to a minimum leaves me more room for important things like snorkeling and scuba gear.

Many travelers check their bags on long flights to Europe. To hedge your bets should your luggage go missing, divide your necessary items among multiple suitcases, including your carry-on bags. That way you'll have a few clothing changes if one bag is lost.
Also, since Mediterranean cruises often begin with a preboarding hotel night, pack what you need for that first night in a packing cube in your carry-on to make it readily accessible, even in your jet-lagged daze. If your airline supplied an amenity kit, be sure to toss that in your carry-on for the first night so you aren't rummaging through your suitcase for a toothbrush. I have been known to make up my own little amenity kit if I'm flying cheap and know I won't get one from the airline.

Mediterranean cruise packing list
Here's a handy packing list for your Mediterranean cruise.
- A casual, lightweight shirt for each day of the cruise.
- A few pairs of shorts, capris (perfect for days when you need more coverage either due to cooler temperatures or visits to religious sites), leggings or skorts and maybe a casual dress to wear during the day during summer. For spring and fall cruises, swap the shorts for slacks or jeans.
- Jacket, fleece vest or sweater for early- and late-season sailings.
- Unless you're a water fiend, one swimsuit is usually enough for the Mediterranean. There are simply too many amazing land-based things to occupy your time. Don't forget clothespins to make it easier to hang it in the bathroom to dry.
- A cover-up for the beach or onboard pool.
- Athletic wear and shoes if you plan to walk, jog, hike, cycle, work out in the ship's gym or attend any fitness classes.
- Jeans, slacks, collared shirts or nice T-shirts, capris, skirts or dresses for evenings on board. Take half of what you think you need, then re-wear evening clothes at least once. Plan to mix and match tops and bottoms to make this work even better.
- Jewelry, belts and accessories, along with a large scarf or shawl that doubles for warmth and as an appropriate cover-up for bare shoulders.
- Optional: True eveningwear if you plan to dress for an onboard formal night or just feel like putting on the glitz. This would include suits for men and cocktail-style dresses or pants and tops for women.
- Pajamas, underwear and socks. Mainstream lines supply robes (but rarely slippers) in suites and for repeat guests at certain loyalty levels. Premium and luxury lines usually have both robes and slippers in the room.
- A light rain jacket or poncho — with a hood — that fits into your backpack in case it rains.
- Sweater, dressy jacket, over-shirt or shawl for cold dining rooms and theaters onboard.
- Waterproof shoes or sandals if you plan on visiting the beach.
- Walking shoes, sneakers or hiking sandals.
- Dress shoes for the evening (unless you can coordinate your day shoes or sandals).
- Hats, caps or visors, plus magnetic hooks to hang them up in your cabin.
- Prescription medication and a first aid kit with common over-the-counter medicines.
- Sunscreen and after-sun lotion or gel.
- Cosmetics, toiletries and hair accessories.
- Ultra-lightweight tote bag and/or backpack.
- Re-useable water bottle and a reusable straw to do your part in keeping single-use plastics out of the ocean (and so you aren't stuck sipping your frozen Bellinis through the paper straws many cruise lines now use).
- Phone, camera, tablet and the associated chargers and spare batteries. Consider a multi-outlet adapter to expand the available USB and electric outlets in your cruise cabin.
- Sports gear you prefer like snorkeling equipment, hiking poles or your own bicycle helmet.
Bottom line
Packing for a cruise in the Mediterranean isn't that different from packing for any other cruise. Check the weather and the shoreside activities for each port, make sure you have a good pair of walking shoes, then double check your cruise line's recommendations for eveningwear and you'll be all set.

Ukraine-Russia war – live: Blasts across Kyiv in major missile attack as US lifts ban on Azov Brigade
LIVE – Updated at 07:04
Russia has struck Ukraine ’s capital Kyiv with cruise and ballistic missiles as well as drones in a major overnight attack in the early hours of today, just days before Volodymyr Zelensky is set to discuss a peace plan with European allies.
The massive aerial attack forced neighbouring Poland to scramble its aircraft, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said this morning.
Poland said that “all necessary procedures to ensure the safety of Polish airspace have been launched”.
The attack, coming after several weeks of quiet nights in Kyiv, also targeted parts of western Ukraine that border Nato-member Poland, and triggered air raid alerts across the whole of the war-torn country.
Ukraine’s air defence systems are engaged in repelling the strikes, Kyiv’s military administration said on Telegram. Many explosions were heard in and around Kyiv, according to witnesses.
This comes as the US dropped a critical ban on arming a controversial Ukrainian fighting unit, allowing the Azov Brigade access to some of its lethal munitions.

Russia and belarus start second stage of tactical nuclear drills.
Russia lost at least 980 troops, including those killed and injured, on the frontline in Ukraine in just the past day, senior Ukrainian military officials said this morning.
Sharing a daily update, the General Staff of the Ukraine Armed Forces said: “Over the past day, the Russians lost 980 servicemen killed and wounded, nine tanks and 46 artillery systems on the battlefield.”
It said the total casualties of those killed and wounded in Russia’s full-scale invasion launched in February 2022 has now risen to 521,830.
Russia has not commented on the daily death toll shared by Ukrainian forces and authorities, nor has it separately issued its own death toll since the full scale invasion of Ukraine.
Additionally, new documents show that Russia’s Wagner mercenary group suffered more battlefield deaths than the Soviet Union lost in the decade-long invasion of Afghanistan, as almost 20,000 of its fighters were killed.
Last month Russian casualties were confirmed to have exceeded 465,000 troops, according to Nicholas Aucott, the senior military adviser of the UK Delegation to the Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe.
China says it will oppose all unilateral sanctions
China will resolutely oppose all unilateral sanctions following new warnings from G7 countries on small Chinese banks about their links to Russia, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
China will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, spokesperson Lin Jin said at a regular press conference.
It was reported yesteday that member countries of the G7 were set to send a tough new warning next week to smaller Chinese banks to stop assisting Russia in evading Western sanctions.
Leaders are gathering for the summit on June 13-15.
Russia fired 30 missiles and drones at Ukraine overnight
Ukraine’s air defence forces destroyed at least five Russian missiles, including hypersonic and ballistic missiles, fired by Russian forces in a major overnight attack, the Ukrainian Air Force has said.
“On the night of 12 June, 2024, the occupiers launched a missile-air strike against Ukraine, using air and ground-based missiles, as well as attack UAVs,” the Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Mykola Oleschuk, said this morning.
He said Ukrainian air-defence intercepted 24 Shahed drones, all four air-launched cruise missiles and one “Kinzhal” hypersonic missile, in a statement this morning.
One Iskander-M ballistic missile was also fired but could not be intercepted, the Air Force Commander said.
The anti-aircraft defence worked in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Vinnytsia regions, he said on his official Telegram channel.
Kim Jong-un calls North Korea Russia's ‘invincible comrade-in-arms’
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has described his country as an “invincible comrade-in-arms” to Russia in a message to Vladimir Putin, state media KCNA said today, amid speculation over Putin’s impending visit to North Korea.
Congratulating the Russian president on Russia’s National Day, Kim said his meeting with Putin at a Russian space launch facility last year elevated the ties of their “century-old strategic relationship”.
“Thanks to the significant meeting between us at the Vostochney Spaceport in September last year, the DPRK-Russia friendly and cooperative relations developed into an unbreakable relationship of comrades-in-arms and a long-standing strategic relationship and are steadily developing into the higher-level state relations,” he said, reported KCNA.
Putin is expected to visit North Korea and Vietnam in the coming weeks, according to Russia’s Vedomosti newspaper.
The North Korean leader also lauded Russia for achieving results on its efforts to build a strong country despite by “suppressing and crushing all the challenges and sanctions and pressures of hostile forces”. He also called Putin’s leadership “energetic and correct”.
An official in Vietnam said the Vietnam trip was planned for 19-20 June, but has not yet been confirmed.
Zelensky to meet Biden in Italy, says White House
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky will be meeting Joe Biden in a guest appearance in Italy on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit, the White House has announced.
The two-day G7 summit will kickstart in Italy tomorrow in the southern province of Puglia.
Senior White House official John Kirby said Mr Biden and Mr Zelensky will meet tomorrow to “discuss the US’s support for Ukraine, both now and in the future”.
Mr Kirby added that Washington would demonstrate a clear commitment to support Ukraine during the G7 summit. The two will also hold a press conference, he said.
Russian and Belarusian troops have started the second stage of tactical nuclear drills in Russia, Russia’s defence ministry has said.
The ministry said the drills were aimed at ensuring that the two countries’ military personnel and equipment were ready to protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“During the exercise, issues of joint training of units of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus for the combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons will be worked out,” the defence ministry said.
US to give Ukraine another Patriot missile system for air defence
Joe Biden has allowed sending one more Patriot missile system to war-hit Ukraine, two US officials said, answering Kyiv’s desperate calls for more air defences as it battles an intense Russian assault on the northeastern Kharkiv region.
It would be the second Patriot system that the US has given to Ukraine, although the Pentagon has routinely provided an undisclosed number of missiles for the system. Other allies, including Germany, also have provided air defence systems as well as munitions for them.
Volodymyr Zelensky late last month pleaded for additional US-made Patriot systems, arguing that they will help his forces fight the close to 3,000 bombs that he said Russia launches into the country every month.
“If we had these modern Patriot systems, (Russian) airplanes wouldn’t be able to fly close enough to drop the (glide) bombs on the civilian population and the military,” he had said on a bilateral trip to Spain.
The two US officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been publicly announced.

One killed in Ukrainian shelling in Russia’s Belgorod
At least one person was killed and three others were injured in Ukrainian shelling in the town of Shebekino in Russia’s Belgorod region, the governor of the region bordering Ukraine said this morning.
“The man died from his wounds on the spot before paramedics arrived,” Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a post on Telegram, adding that two wounded people were taken to local hospitals.
The shelling by multiple launch rocket systems also damaged six residential houses and 11 apartment buildings, he said.
Kyiv says its attacks on Russian territory are aimed at undermining Moscow’s war efforts by destroying military, energy and transport infrastructure.
Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched against its smaller neighbour in 2022.
Russian fighter-bomber crashes after ‘technical fault’
A Russian military jet crashed during a training flight in North Ossetia, killing two people on board, the defence ministry said Tuesday.
The Sukhoi SU-34 jet crashed “in a mountainous zone” and there was “no damage on the ground”, the ministry said, adding that a technical problem appeared to have caused the crash.
It comes amid an increase in aircraft accidents in Russia, attributed to sanctions imposed on Russia leading to a shortage of necessary parts.
Ukraine says it has destroyed all Russian missiles and drones in overnight attack
Ukraine’s air defence systems have destroyed all air weapons on their approach to Kyiv, the head of the city’s military administration said this morning.
In a rare large-scale attack which sent all of Ukraine under air-raid alert, Russia launched a missile and drone attack on Kyiv in the early morning, the Ukrainian military said.
Russia used a combination of cruise and ballistic missiles as well as drones in its attack, Serhiy Popko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration said, citing preliminary information.
The full scale of the attack was not immediately clear, he added. Witnesses said several blasts that sounded like air defence systems at work were heard in and around Kyiv.
The air raid alerts lasted several hours across all of Ukraine, starting soon after midnight GMT and including regions bordering Nato-member Poland.
Poland has scrambled its aircraft and air forces against Russia’s large-scale missile attacks targeting Ukraine’s central and western parts, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said this morning.
The Polish armed forces described its response as “defensive air activities”.
Warning of increased noise-levels due to Polish and allied aircraft operating in its airspace, it said: “Tonight we are observing the activity of long-range aviation of the Russian Federation, carrying out strikes using cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles of the Shahed type against objects located, among others, in the western territory of Ukraine.”
Poland, which lies on Ukraine’s west, said that the last such “intensified” Russian aggressive activity was recorded on Thursday and Friday night.
“All necessary procedures to ensure the safety of Polish airspace have been launched, and the RSZ Operational Command is monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis,” it said, referring to one of the two command bodies of the Polish Armed Forces.
Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago, there have been a number of intrusions into Polish airspace, triggering worry in the European Union and Nato member state and reminding people of how close the war is.
Explosions hit Kyiv as Russia launches major missile attack
Blasts were heard across Ukraine’s capital Kyiv this morning as Russian forces rained missiles on the war-hit nation, officials said.
Ukraine’s air defence systems are engaged in repelling the strikes, Kyiv’s military administration said on Telegram.
Many explosions were heard in and around Kyiv, according to witnesses.
The attack, coming after several weeks of quiet nights in Kyiv, saw all of Ukraine placed under blaring air raid alerts.

Foreign investment in Ukraine reaches $4.25 bln in 2023
Foreign investment into the Ukrainian economy reached $4.25billion in 2023 despite the war with Russia, Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said on Tuesday.
“The war does not mean an embargo on investment. In 2023, foreign investors committed $4.25billion to the Ukrainian economy, which exceeded the 2016-2017 levels.
“We should continue to increase this figure,” Svyrydenko said.

Zelensky warns pro-russian rhetoric ‘dangerous’ for eu countries.
Volodymyr Zelensky has warned of growing pro-Russian rhetoric in Europe, after far-right parties – some sympathetic to the Kremlin – made gains in European Union elections.
“It seems to me that the most important thing is that people did not choose pro-Russian populist rhetoric. But radical pro-Russian rhetoric is dangerous for your countries,” Mr Zelensky said in Berlin.
Finland sees first Nato deployment as its jets join mission in Romania
Finland has made its first deployment for Nato since joining the alliance in April 2023, sending seven F-18 fighter jets to a military base in southeastern Romania where they will conduct air shielding missions with Romanian and British jets.
A Finnish Air Force commander said the mission would help speed up Finland’s integration into Nato.
“I’m sure that during this enhanced air policing air shielding mission our integration into NATO will take a big leap forward,” Johan Anttila, commander of Finland’s Karelia Air Wing told soldiers on the tarmac at the Mihail Kogalniceanu base.
Ukraine appeals for help rebuilding shattered cities
Ukraine and its allies drummed up support to protect Ukrainian cities from Russian missiles today and urged international businesses to put their faith, and billions of dollars, into post-war reconstruction.
Kyiv hopes the recovery conference will cement its credentials as a future member of the European Union that is worthy of huge injections of reconstruction financing – even as Russian forces continue to make slow advances in Ukraine’s east.
Speaking alongside German chancellor Olaf Scholz, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had already wiped out enough energy infrastructure to power the cities of Berlin and Munich combined.
Russian hybrid operations very concerning, say Romania, Poland and Latvia
Russia’s malign hybrid activities in Nato countries are a source of deep concern, the presidents of Romania, Poland and Latvia said on Tuesday in a statement released to coincide with a meeting of eastern members of the alliance.
Countries on Nato’s eastern flank say that Russia is using tactics ranging from sabotage and cyberattacks to illegal migration to destabilise them due to their support for Ukraine.
Russia has repeatedly denied accusations that it is behind such activities. “We are deeply concerned about Russia’s recent malignant hybrid activities on Allied territory, which constitute a threat to Allied security,” the presidents said in the statement.
US drops ban on controversial Ukrainian brigade
The United States had dropped a ban on arming a controversial Ukrainian fighting unit which has been criticised for recruiting fighters from far-right circles.
The Azov Brigade is among Ukraine’s most effective and popular fighting units, formerly based in Mariupol, has also been called out for some of its fighting tactics.
It has rejected accusations of extremism and any ties with far-right movements, and the US said it had found “no evidence” of human rights violations.
“This is a new page in our unit’s history,” the brigade said. “Azov is becoming even more powerful, even more professional and even more dangerous for occupiers.”
Russia says West may force it to amend nuclear doctrine
The actions of the West are making Russia think about amending its nuclear deterrence framework, the TASS news agency cited deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying on Tuesday.
Russian president Vladimir Putin spoke about Russia’s nuclear doctrine last week, saying that it was a “living instrument” which could be changed. On Tuesday, Ryabkov declined to say what exactly could change in the documents.
Russia destroyed half of Ukraine’s power generation capacity, says Zelensky
Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy facilities have destroyed half of its electricity generation capacity since winter, Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday.
“As a result of the strikes of Russian missiles and drones, nine gigawatts of capacity have already been destroyed. The peak of electricity consumption last winter was 18 gigawatts. So half now doesn’t exist,” Mr Zelensky told a conference in Berlin.
Russian forces capture two villages in Ukraine
Russian forces have captured the village of Miasozharivka in Ukraine’s Luhansk region and the village of Tymkivka in the Kharkiv region, the TASS news agency cited Russia’s defence ministry as saying.
At Nato allies summit, Latvia touts coordinated Ukraine approach, without Hungary
Nato’s eastern flank leaders will have a more coordinated approach towards supporting Ukraine after the Hungarian president stayed away from their summit in Riga, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics said.
The split emphasises diverging approaches to Russia and Ukraine among central European nations, amid Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban’s continued close ties to Russia and refusal to give arms to Ukraine.
Rinkevics said Hungary’s President Tamas Sulyok cancelled his trip to the summit of the Bucharest Nine, a group of European countries on the eastern edge of Nato, at the weekend.
Ukraine’s recovery - problems within Kyiv government
Among other immediate problems Ukraine faces, sustained Russian attacks on its power grid in recent weeks have forced leaders in Kyiv to institute nationwide rolling blackouts.
But on Monday, the head of the State Agency for Restoration of Ukraine, Mustafa Nayyem, announced his resignation on Facebook.
He cited “systemic obstacles that prevent me from exercising my powers effectively” and accused the government of bogging his agency down in red tape.
Ukraine hasn’t had a minister dedicated to reconstruction since Oleksandr Kubrakov was dismissed in May.
Mr Nayyem complained that Ukraine‘s prime minister barred him from attending the Berlin conference, starting on Tuesday
Ukraine’s bid to join EU - ‘we are pulling out all the stops’, says Germany’s foreign minister
Ukraine applied to join the EU after the Russian invasion in February 2022, and last Friday, the European Commission said it had met the requirements for starting negotiations - so it’s now up to member countries to make it happen.
Speaking ahead of the two-day Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock said: “We are pulling out all the stops so that Ukraine can soon take a seat at the table of the European Union - because, in addition to our military support, that’s the best protection there is.”
Task of supporting Ukraine’s recovery ‘too big to be tackled by governments alone'
Ahead of the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, where support will be gathered for Kyiv from governments and businesses, the German development minister Svenja Schulze has said governments need support of companies and civil societies.
It said assisting Kyiv in its short and long term recovery was “too big to be tackled by governments alone”
He added: “Even during the current times of war, Ukraine needs to continually rebuild houses, water pipelines, hospitals and power grids.
“People want to keep on living in their country, and to do so they need electricity, water and a roof over their heads.”
What’s happening today
Germany is hosting a two-day conference to gather support for Ukraine’s recovery in a signal of solidarity witth Kyiv from today.
The two-day Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin comes before the Group of Seven summit of Ukraine‘s leading Western allies in Italy and a global peace summit in Switzerland this coming weekend.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who last week attended events marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France, is expected at the gathering, which the German hosts say will bring together 2,000 people from politics, business and other areas.
Russia drops 500kg guided bomb on Ukrainian civilians overnight
At least five people were severely injured after Russian forces dropped a 500-kilogram guided bomb on a residential area of the city of Kostiantynivka in Donetsk oblast yesterday, Ukrainian officials said.
The guided bomb hit the area around 11.20pm last night, officials said.
The bomb hit a residential area where five local residents sustained physical injuries due to shattered glass and a powerful blast wave, reported Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda. The injured civilians include a 65-year-old man and two women aged 63 and 88.
They were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries and multiple lacerations, the report added. The bombing also hollowed out 13 multi-storey buildings and shattered its windows and glass panes.
Russia does not acknowledge its missile and bombing attacks on Ukraine, especially civilian areas, although it claims it is targeting military hotspots. However, in its 27-month-old war, Russia has attacked schools, maternity wards, hospitals, shelters, villages, residential settlements, museums, churches among several other places.
90 countries to attend Swiss-hosted Ukraine peace summit that Russia is snubbing
Zelensky reaches Germany to meet Scholz
Volodymyr Zelensky said he arrived in Germany for a conference on Ukraine’s post-war recovery and would also hold talks with chancellor Olaf Sholz.
The Ukrainian war-time leader said he would prioritise measures concerning Ukraine‘s energy sector, shattered by Russian air attacks at the conference, an annual event.
His talks with Sholz would focus on continued military support, including air defences and joint manufacture of munitions, and the coordination of positions ahead of the “peace summit” to be hosted by Switzerland later in the week.
Russian bomber crashes in Caucasus, killing crew
A Russian SU-34 bomber crashed in the Caucasus mountains during a routine training flight likely due to a technical malfunction, killing the crew aboard, Russian news agencies reported today citing the defence ministry.
An unspecified number of crew members have been killed, officials said. It is not immediately known how many people were on board.
“The preliminary cause of the plane crash is a technical malfunction,” TASS state news agency cited the ministry’s representative as saying. The crash took place in the Ossetia region, the ministry said.
US does not expect EU's rightward shift to bring big foreign policy changes, official says
The United States does not expect any major foreign policy changes from the European Union, including on Ukraine, after a European Parliament election that saw far-right parties gain seats, a US official said on Monday.
The official said Washington expects Ursula von der Leyen will be able to stay on as EU president.
Russia undermining Finnish sovereignty with airspace violations, says think-tank
The Kremlin is continuing its mission to undermine Finland’s territorial and sovereign integrity by sending military jets into its airspace, a US-based think-tank said, after Russia violated the Nato nation’s airspace yesterday.
Shortly after breaching Finnish airspace yesterday morning, the Russian defence ministry said it conducted flights using Tu-95MS missile carriers and Tu-22M3 bombers over the neutral waters of the Baltic, Barents and Norwegian seas.
Noting that the Russian ministry of defence has not responded to Finnish reports, The Institute for the Study of War said: “This reported incursion likely forwards the ongoing Kremlin effort to undermine Finnish sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
It noted that the Russian defence ministry had proposed last month that the Russian government should “reassess Russia’s maritime borders in the Gulf of Finland, which some Western officials have warned may be part of an effort to revise maritime zones in the Baltic Sea”.
“The Kremlin has also been running a number of information operations aimed at portraying Finland as an enemy to Russia and Russians, ultimately setting information conditions to justify potential future aggression against Finland,” the ISW said.
90 countries to attend Ukraine peace summit that Russia is ignoring
Nearly 90 countries and organisations, half from Europe, have confirmed attending the Swiss-hosted Ukraine peace summit over the weekend despite Russia’s refusal to participate in the conference, Switzerland’s president has said.
Viola Amherd told reporters in the Swiss capital that the summit, on Saturday and Sunday, will aim to chart a path toward possible peace nearly 28 months after Russian forces invaded Ukraine and the war grinding on.
Some, including French president Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Olaf Scholz, are expected to attend the summit at the Buergenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne.
Brazil and China said they wouldn’t take part unless both sides – including Russia – were at the table, according to Swiss officials. Beijing has been one of the top supporters of Vladimir Putin since the war started.
“This is not propaganda,” said Amherd. “This is about the basis of humanitarian aid provided by Switzerland… and to initiate a dialogue.”
The Swiss president added that most participants — about half of which will be represented at the level of head of state or government — are country leaders, but “a handful” are from organisations like the United Nations.

Putin claims Russia may supply long-range weapons to enemies of West
Vladimir Putin has claimed Russia could retaliate in kind against those permitting Ukraine to target Russia with their long-range missiles – by providing such weapons to countries within striking distance of Western nations.
In wide-ranging remarks at his annual economic forum in St Petersburg, the Russian president sought to insist that Moscow “does not care” about the upcoming US election, claimed candidate Donald Trump’s hush money conviction was “political”, and dismissed fears that Russia wants to attack Nato as “nonsense”.
But he warned that the United States and Germany’s recent authorisation for Ukraine to use their weapons to hit specific Russian targets close to Kharkiv could lead to “very serious problems”, calling Berlin’s decision a “very dangerous step”.
Putin claims Russia could supply long-range weapons to West’s enemies
A Russian military plane breached Finnish airspace yesterday, officials in Helsinki said. This was the first such violation by Russian forces since Finland joined Nato last year.
The warplane entered Finland’s airspace for approximately two minutes on Monday morning, officials from Finland’s defence ministry said, confirming the breach of its air territory in the eastern Gulf of Finland.
The aircraft flew at least 2.5km into Finnish territory.
Finnish defence minister Antti Hakkanen said the country takes the “suspected territorial violation seriously and the investigation has been started immediately”.
This is not the first time Russia has violated Finland’s airspace. In August 2022, it sent two fighter jets inside the European nation’s airspace, sparking international condemnation over its reckless air operations.
Ukraine appoints commander of drone systems
The Ukrainian military has appointed a commander of drone forces in a newly created position, bolstering its most active air defence unit, as it continues to fight back against Russia’s 27-month-old war.
Ukraine has repeatedly underlined the importance of drone warfare in reconnaissance and combat operations it is carrying out against Russian forces. The drones have been used by Ukrainian forces in overwhelming numbers to strike positions on the frontline, bordering Russian villages and cities, and deep inside Russia.
A statement by the General Staff of the Armed Forces said Vadym Sukharevskyi, deputy armed forces commander, had been named to the post by order of defence minister Rustem Umerov. Sukharevskyi was appointed deputy commander in February with responsibility for drones.
Mr Zelensky had issued a decree in February calling for the creation of a separate branch of the armed forces devoted to drones and the order was endorsed last week by the government.
Ukraine will be producing a million of its own drones in the course of 2024, Mr Zelensky said. Alongside the Ukrainian military has ramped up its use of drones. Commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi has also met in recent days with the country’s most successful drone units.

Biden to lift ban on ukrainian unit using us weapons – report.
The Biden administration will lift its ban on allowing a controversial Ukrainian military unit to use American weapons, the Washington Post reported citing State Department officials.
The State Department reversed a decade-old prohibition on the Azov Brigade from using American training and weapons after a new analysis found no evidence of human rights violations by the unit, the Washington Post reported.
“After thorough review, Ukraine’s 12th Special Forces Azov Brigade passed Leahy vetting as carried out by the US Department of State,” the State Department said in a statement obtained by the newspaper.
The Leahy Law bars US military assistance to foreign units found to have committed such violations.
The Azov Regiment, which has far-right and ultra-nationalist roots, is part of Ukraine’s National Guard and evolved out of a battalion that was formed in 2014 and fought against Russian-backed separatists who carved out breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine.
The regiment is lionised in Ukraine for defending the country against Russia’s invasion and in particular the southern city of Mariupol, but they are reviled by Russian president Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin.
