The best times to visit Jordan are spring (March to May) or fall (September to November). The days are warm, with temperatures between 61°F and 99°F, but the nights are cool. It’s not too hot for exploring sites or hiking in the nature reserves, where flora and fauna are abundant.

It’s very hot in summer (June to August), with temperatures of up to 102°F. In contrast, Jordan often experiences snow in winter (December to February) and the nights get very cold, especially in the desert regions. Most of the rain falls at this time, in short, sharp showers.

Visiting Jordan in January - February

The winter months in Jordan are very cold: Amman is typically assailed by biting winds, while Petra experiences snowfall and temperatures hovering a few degrees below freezing. Around Aqaba and the Dead Sea the climate is warmer and more pleasant. January is also the wettest month of the year.

Events & Festivals

• Aqaba Traditional Arts Festival: This celebrates the culture of the Bedouin people, and is a showcase of local traditional arts and crafts in the city of Aqaba.

Visiting Jordan in March

In March the country emerges from the chilly temperatures of winter, and the rainiest time of year is over. As this is only the start of spring the sites are still relatively quiet. However, nights in the desert can be quite cold still.

Visiting Jordan in April - May

Wildflowers coat the valleys and even the desert from April through to early June, creating a kaleidoscope of color across the country. Temperatures are warm but not too hot and, thanks to winter's rain, the valleys and forests are lush. This is one of the most popular times to visit Jordan.

Visiting Jordan in June - August

The heat increases over the summer months from June to August, so if you plan on visiting during this time we advise taking lots of water and finding shade often. However, this is dry heat rather than being humid, so if you don't mind the high temperatures it can still be comfortable. As this is the low season, hotels tend to decrease their rates accordingly.

• Jerash Festival: A celebration of Jordanian arts, culture, literature, food, and music. This is a large and lively event, and often includes optional seminars and workshops in addition to the main celebrations taking place in Jerash.
• The dark skies of the desert: At this time of year, the skies provide the perfect canvas for watching the Perseid meteor shower, which occurs annually, and can bee seen in Wadi Rum.

Visiting Jordan in September

Although still a summer month, toward the end of September temperatures do start to cool off slightly.

Visiting Jordan in October - November

Fall isn't always a particularly distinct season in Jordan, although it falls roughly from the end of September through to the end of November. Temperatures have cooled from the heat of summer but are not yet into the depths of the winter chill, and there is often a bit of rain around mid-October which provides sustenance to the ground after a dry few months, creating green landscapes once again. This is a very pleasant time to visit Jordan.

Visiting Jordan in December

December is the start of the winter season in Jordan, with temperatures plummeting and rain and snow often falling throughout the country. However, this is a quiet time to visit, so sites may be empty.

You have decided to visit Jordan and are wondering what’s the best time to visit Jordan.

The best travel time for Jordan depends on a few factors: where exactly in Jordan you are going, and what the purpose of your trip is. That’s because there are several climate zones in Jordan . Good temperatures will make your trip much more enjoyable. I guess you don’t want to have your visit to Petra be rained out (literally), right?

Speaking for the entire country, the best time to visit Jordan is during spring and early summer (March to June) and during autumn (September to November).

In this article, I’ll explain to you the best time to travel to Jordan, depending on location, weather and travel purpose.

Let’s dive right in.

Best Time to Visit Jordan by Location

Best time for a roundtrip.

Most people visit Jordan to make a roundtrip through the country by visiting all the highlights within a week or two. If you’re visiting Jordan for the first time and want to explore the best sights and activities, you really don’t want to miss out on anything because of the weather.

The best time for a roundtrip in Jordan is during spring and early summer (March to June) and during autumn (September to November). Those are the months where you’ll have pleasantly warm weather across the country.

During spring, early summer and autumn, temperatures average 25°C (77°F) in Amman and 30°C (86°F) in southern regions like Aqaba or Wadi Rum . Perfect to travel around the country.

Best Time to Visit Dead Sea

The Dead Sea attracts millions of visitors a year. It’s considered a great destination to visit year-round . The best time to visit the Dead Sea is spring (March-June) and autumn (September-November). During these months, temperatures are warm and the UV concentration is moderate.

Summer months at the Dead Sea are quite hot (hitting 40°C / 104°F is no exception). You don’t want to roast under the hot sun for hours, especially if you aren’t used to such temperatures.

December and January are popular for “winter escapes” during Christmas and New Year. Temperatures average 20°(68°F) and the water is pleasantly warm during winter months. However, there can be colder days and occasional rainfall during winter.

Best Time to Visit Amman

Amman has one of the most drastic differences in weather in the country. It gets really hot during summer months (July/August) and quite cold during winter (January/February). While you can expect a steady 35°C during summer, snowfall is almost guaranteed during winter months.

Consequently, the best time to visit Amman is during spring (March-June) and late autumn (October-November).

I recommend that you plan your trip outside summer and winter months. Amman being a large city with over 4 million inhabitants, urban heat during summer months is more intense in Amman than in villages. Besides, Amman is a hilly city and your sightseeing trip will involve a lot of walking. That isn’t pleasant when the weather is too hot or snowy.

Best Time to Visit Petra

The ancient Nabatean city of Petra attracts millions of visitors every year. The site is open year-round and there are always people visiting.

However, there are times of the year which are more suitable to visit Petra than others. I personally believe that the best time to visit Petra depends on two factors: the weather and the amount of visitors.

Let’s first look at the weather. Petra is located in the southern part of Jordan. The weather here is very hot and dry during summer (40°C / 104°C are the daily average). If you’d like to go hiking in Petra, I recommend that you travel outside of the summer, ideally in spring or autumn .

A second factor which is particularly important for Petra is the amount of visitors . Almost everyone wants to take a picture of the iconic Treasury without the crowds. Petra is huge in size and there’s enough space for everyone. But the truth is that it can get really crowded (and noisy) at the Treasury (the main point of interest in Petra), if you come at the wrong time.

Like I said, most visitors will visit Jordan as part of a roundtrip. The preferred time to do so is from March-June and from September-November. The travel agencies know that, solo-travelers know that, and as such, most people are heading to Petra during these months. Let me reassure you – you don’t have to avoid these months to have a great time in Petra. If you’re visiting Petra during the preferred travel time, be sure to enter the site early in the morning. Aim for 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. if you can.

If you aren’t an early bird but you still want to have a quiet time in Petra, try to travel outside of these months. Temperatures in winter are colder and winters are less popular months to travel (for tourists from the Northern Hemisphere). You can expect less crowds between December-February .

Best Time to Visit Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is a desert located in southern Jordan. Deserts are known for their long, dry and hot summers . That also applies to the Wadi Rum.

Same as with most other locations in Jordan, spring and autumn are the best time to visit Wadi Rum. That’s especially true if you’re planning on exploring the highlights of the desert, like going on a jeep tour and climbing the sand dunes.

If you’re planning on doing heavy physical activities, such as climbing or trekking, I recommend that you do so in late autumn (November) or early spring (March).

Rainfall (during winter) is a highlight for Bedouins in Wadi Rum who rely on it for maintaining the desert’s vegetation.

Best Time to Visit Aqaba

Aqaba is a wonderful destination to visit year-round . Located on the gulf of Aqaba (which is connected to the Red Sea), Aqaba is one of the cities in Jordan with the highest average temperatures . Summers here are hot (similar to Wadi Rum) and winters are pleasantly mild, averaging 20°C (68°F).

While weather in Aqaba is mild in winter, water temperatures are much colder here compared to Dead Sea waters. You can go diving and snorkeling with the right equipment during all seasons, but it’s much more pleasant when the weather (and water temperature) are warmer. Same applies for enjoying the beach or the resort’s, which Aqaba is famous for. It’s doable at 20°C (68°F), but it’s so much nicer when the weather is sunny and warm.

Consequently, the best time to visit Aqaba is during late spring and early summer (April-June) as well as in early autumn (September-October).

Best Month to Visit Jordan

Additional factors to consider.

Another important factor to consider is the availability of guides and access to sights .

Opening hours are slightly longer in summer (April-October) than in winter (November-March), but that shouldn’t affect your trip.

One more factor to take into account when choosing the best time to travel to Jordan is Ramadan.

Ramadan is the holy month in which Muslims refrain from eating and drinking during daytime. With shorter working hours, many worshippers dedicate more time to religious activities and their families.

For tourists this means that the opening hours of most sights are shorter than usual. Furthermore, there are less tourist guides available. Guided tours that require heavy physical activity (such as guided Wadi Mujib trails, hiking in Dana etc) are not available during Ramadan.

On the other hand, you can benefit from the special and unique atmosphere in Jordan during Ramadan.

Public Holidays

In most countries, public holidays are the time when availability is lower and prices are higher . Jordan is no exception to that.

The days after Ramadan (known as Eid festivals ) as well as during other religious holidays, are popular days for short vacations for many Jordanians. Places such as the Dead Sea or Aqaba are particularly popular with locals. If you’re trying to get a good deal, try to visit these places outside of weekends and public holidays in Jordan .

School Vacations

School vacations are one of the factors that drive up the prices . The good thing is that summer in the US or Europe isn’t the best time to visit Jordan, so at least you don’t have to worry about booking a trip when literally everyone is taking holidays.

However, even when booking a trip in spring/autumn, keep an eye on the school vacation dates. You might get a better deal for your flight to Jordan if you book before or after a school holiday.

Jordan is a small country. Its remarkable differences in altitudes and landscapes make Jordan have different climate zones.

If you’re planning a roundtrip to see the country’s highlights, the best time to visit Jordan is during spring and early summer (March to June) and during autumn (September to November) .

If you’re not used to hot weather and/or are planning to go trekking, March/April and November are the best months for you.

Summer months can be quite hot (40°C and more), and aren’t ideal, as visiting Jordan usually means a lot of walking.

Winter months are popular for winter escapes (the Dead Sea and Aqaba are popular wellness destinations). However, the weather is less predictable in most parts of Jordan. Rainfall and snow are common (especially in Amman, but also in Petra and Wadi Rum).

When it comes to planning your trip to Jordan , there’s one big question. It’s not whether you should go, it’s when should you go!

The best time to visit Jordan depends on a few different factors. Firstly, is a sunny beach break in Aqaba a large part of your plans? Or are you primarily visiting Jordan as the spectacular open air museum that it is, gathering Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea within its borders?

While you’ll always find something to do in Jordan, it really isn’t a year round destination. The summer months can become unbearably hot for hiking in the midday sun. And the winters are surprisingly bitter to be outdoors for too long in the Jordan Valley.

Here, I’ve broken down the travel advice for visiting Jordan into a month by month guide. Don’t read this in one go! It’s too boring! But skip to the part that you’re wondering about and take it from there.

In brief: The Best Time to Visit Jordan

I’d highly recommend visiting in the off season to beat the crowds and the harsh temperatures. In Jordan, the shoulder season involves spring and summer, so that’s March to May and then late September to November.

Here’s your month by month guide to visiting Jordan…

Jordan in JANUARY

Don’t be taken by surprise. January gets cold in Jordan! The idea that the Middle East is hot year round is just not true in this particular part.

Snow is uncommon but not impossible in Petra and the capital city of Amman. That said, if you visit in January, you will likely have these places to yourself.

Just make sure you pack the right kit and you will be fine.

• You might catch Arbor day, a three day holiday where Jordanians plant trees. Jordan in winter is full of surprises. 

Always bring layers. When the cold wind blows in, you feel it!

Jordan in February

February is an excellent time to visit Jordan in the off-season. The temperatures are cooler but the sun is starting to break through. Pack lots and lots of layers and be prepared for anything from snow to fierce sunshine in Petra (we had both during our trip to Jordan in February.)

It’s probably a good idea to skip the beach town of Aqaba, though, and focus your Jordan visit more on the historic sites in Jerash and Madaba instead.

• The Aqaba Traditional Arts Festival takes place in February, taking advantage of the cooler months in this seaside resort town.

Jordan in March

Jordan in March brings with it a variable set of temperatures. You can still feel the chill of winter and get caught in the rain. Or, you can find yourself reaching for the sunscreen as the sun decides to come out and play.

In short, layers are essential to combat the Jordan weather in March.

March is a great time for hikers, with the routes around Petra still not full.

Jordan in April

By April, spring is well and truly under way. The air is warmer and the flowers have burst into life. Yes, even in the desert.

It’s a lovely temperature for both city life and the great outdoors and, as a result, crowds gather and prices rise.

• The off-road car race the Jordan Rally takes place in April.

Jordan in May

Jordan in May is a beautiful time to visit. The weather in Jordan in May is mild, with temperatures rising up to 28℃ (82℉) in the day and falling to 12℃ (53℉) by night.

It’s a popular time to visit, with the heat in Petra and Wadi Rum not too overbearing and the capital of Amman fresh with blossom. As a result, of course, the prices rise too.

• Jordan’s Independence Day takes place on 25th May and is celebrated with fireworks and military parades.

Jordan in June

June well and truly marks the start of summer in Jordan and the temperatures start to climb. June is often a month without rainfall but the temperatures haven’t yet reached the peaks of July and August.

Temperatures can rise to 105°F (40°C) in places and sandstorms can also roll in, darkening the skies and leading to a sense of claustrophobia.

It’s a good month to visit the beach resorts in Aqaba and the Dead Sea and still a pleasurable time to walk around the capital of Amman, where the air is a little cooler.

For Wadi Rum and Petra, prepare to sweat. But also, pack layers and warm coats because the temperature also plunges in the evenings and night in the desert.

• 9th June is King Abdullah’s coronation anniversary and also a public holiday.

Reading in the Dead Sea Jordan

Jordan in July

Is it too hot to visit Jordan in July? Simply put, yes! Temperatures run at 105°F (40°C) and Sirocco (a hot, dry southerly wind) blows.

If all you want to do is laze around in Aqaba or float around the spas near the Dead Sea, then maybe different advice applies.

But if you want to visit (and hike) your way through Petra and Wadi Rum, then find another time.

There’s one big caveat to that, though:

• The Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts takes place in July and it’s a visual extravaganza. So, if costumes and lights sway you, then think twice about July.

Jordan in August

Much like July, August in Jordan is hot, hot, hot and dry, dry, dry. The desert sees temperatures of 105°F (40°C) by day, although Amman at its higher elevation runs at a comfortable 81°F (27°C).

Jordanians tend to head to the beach in Aqaba or make the most of the air conditioned museums in Amman.

Another cooler spot involves visiting the mosaics of Madaba, where you’re protected from the fierce sun. Mount Nebo, which can get pretty blustery in winter, is more comfortable in August.

In short, August is not a great month to visit Petra and Wadi Rum unless you know you can handle the heat well. The crowds have thinned since many international visitors know to avoid the Middle East during its peak heat. The choice is yours…

• The start of the Islamic New Year, the Maal Hijra, takes place in August. It’s a lunar date so the exact date changes each year.

Jordan in September

Is September a good month to visit Jordan? Yes, it’s one of the best!

The hot temperatures in the desert have faded and yet the sea remains warm in Aqaba for divers. Amman is balmy and, well, everyone seems in a good mood.

Sure, other international visitors have visited and those prices begin to climb. It’s wise to book well in advance and to be prepared to brave the crowds at the top sites.

• The Haya Theatre Festival takes place in September, with puppet shows for children.

Jordan in October

Early October in Jordan is distinctly different to late October in terms of temperature.

Those early October days seem like paradise, with warm waters in the Red Sea for divers and warm but not blistering temperatures in Wadi Rum and Petra.

It’s one reason why October is the peak month for hiking visitors to Jordan.

Temperatures fall sharply, however, and by Halloween, nights in Amman feel cool and the autumnal rains will fall.

Jordan in November

November in Jordan sees distinctly cool weather in Amman and more variable weather at the Red Sea.

Now’s the time that the crowds disperse, the fares drop and yet the country remains as beautiful as ever.

Organised tours from Globus, the Jordan Escape, start up to make the most of those crowd-free sights and hikes. Don’t let the weather in Jordan put you off!

• Muslims in Jordan celebrate the birth of the prophet Mohammed with the Mawlid or Mawlid al-Nabi al-Sharif in November.

Jordan in December

December marks an unmistakable winter in Jordan, with regular rain and occasional snow. Temperatures are cool across the country, and a beach holiday in Aqaba seems absurd.

However, for those who love hiking, history and having the place to themselves, now is the time to go. And it’s another month when you can book a trip with the tour group I travelled with, Globus and the Jordan Escape.

When is the best time to visit Petra?

Visiting Petra is one of the best things to do in Jordan , so you want to time it right.

What you need to bear in mind is that Petra was an ancient city, not just an ancient temple. To explore the whole area takes a lot of hiking and a fair amount of endurance. And if you’re looking for those beautiful photographs, you’ll have to climb for anything between around half an hour and four hours.

It’s also incredibly popular. While the city itself is large enough to absorb summer crowds, the key spots like the Treasury can get horribly congested.

So, bearing that in mind, I’d suggest that the best time to visit Petra is in the low season: spring or summer.

What is it like to visit Jordan during Ramadan?

Unlike certain other Middle Eastern countries, Jordan is relaxed about both tourists and locals not following the rules of Islam. Alcohol is served and the main sights are open during Ramadan.

However, the majority of Jordanians do follow Islam and so you may find that many of the smaller shops, restaurants and cafes are closed during the day during Ramadan. Plus, certain areas remain very conservative, so please always behave in a respectful manner. Which, of course, you would, right?!

Amman is an intriguing city to enjoy all year round. But if you plan on dining outside and making the most of the blossom-filled streets, then spring is the best time to go. April and May are absolutely gorgeous and a great time to indulge in fresh, Jordanian food outside.

When is the best time to visit Israel and Jordan?

Although Israel has a longer coastline than Jordan, the weather isn’t too different. A popular combination involves spending one week in Israel and one week in Jordan and the spring and autumn months are the best for that.

The best time to visit Egypt and Jordan

The summer months in Egypt are absolutely, unbearably, swelteringly hot. I would highly recommend avoiding them if you plant to be sightseeing as visiting Egypt’s Valley of the Kings is a physical endeavour!

So, once again, the most popular months to visit Egypt and Jordan together would be within the spring and autumn months. But you can escape the crowds altogether if you wrap up a little and visit during the winter.

Summer, between June and August, can be unbearably hot in Jordan, while conversely, some areas can become frigidly cold in the winter, between December and February.

Most travelers choose to visit in spring, between March and May, or in autumn, between September and November. This is when the weather is at its most pleasant, but of course, that also means that spring and autumn are peak season. 

Being a Muslim nation, you may also want to factor in Ramadan when deciding the best time to visit Jordan, although this varies year by year.

Visiting Jordan in January 

January is the middle of winter in Jordan, and while you might at first think that this isn’t such a problem given the Middle Eastern location, this is in fact a country that experiences vast extremes of weather. 

In fact, the capital Amman can be bitterly cold, given its relatively high altitude, and the city occasionally sees snowfall. The desert regions, while they might be perfect to explore during the day in January, become equally cold at night once the sun has dropped.

January though is a good time to go hiking, and a good time to visit Petra, when things aren’t quite so busy at this iconic Jordanian attraction. 

Visiting Jordan in February 

February is the last winter month, and it can be the best time to visit Jordan before the rush of spring begins.  Temperatures are starting to rise again and things are heating up in the desert and along the Red Sea.

Around Aqaba, the popular diving and beach resort area, they are already seeing average temperatures rising into the 20s, while in Amman, it’s considerably colder.

Head to Petra or Wadi Rum to see these sights without the spring crowds, but take warm clothes to wrap up in at night time. 

Visiting Jordan in March 

March is when spring begins, and in terms of the weather, it can easily be the best time to visit Jordan.  The country is heating up and in the desert and along the coast it’s very much getting warmer, with highs approaching the 30 degrees Celsius mark. 

This is a great time to be in Amman and to enjoy both good weather and great culture. Petra and Wadi Rum are starting to get busy though, as tour groups begin to arrive and tourist numbers rise.

If you want to go hiking in Jordan, weather conditions are optimal in March, while the country’s nature and wildlife are starting to bloom beautifully. 

Visiting Jordan in April 

April can be particularly busy, especially at famed tourist spots such as Petra, but that’s because April is the best time to visit Jordan to experience the country’s best nature and best attractions. 

The weather is great, and it’s still not summer, so temperatures are pleasant yet not overbearing. Amman is now seeing temperatures in the 20s, while Aqaba in the Red Sea is regularly well above 30 degrees Celsius. 

In the western world, April usually means it’s the Easter holidays, and this can bring in lots of visitors from Europe or North America looking to not only make the most of their holiday time but to enjoy the warm climate of Jordan. 

Visiting Jordan in May

May is when the climate begins to transition from spring into summer and you can rest assured that it’s going to be hot in Jordan. 

It’s still not overbearing though and given the wildlife and nature on show, this can be the best time to visit Jordan if you’re interested in hiking or scuba diving. 

This is a great time to visit Aqaba on the Red Sea as temperatures are high, and you can really enjoy the beaches. If you’re diving or snorkeling, then the visibility is perfect and as summer approaches, the currents and conditions are much calmer than in winter. 

In May, wildflowers are blooming everywhere in Jordan, and it’s a beautiful time to strap on the hiking boots and to hit the trails in search of Jordanian flora and fauna. 

Visiting Jordan in June 

June is the start of summer, and it’s not necessarily the best time to visit Jordan, because this is when things really start to heat up. 

Compared to July, June is colder, of course, but conditions are still verging on the unpleasant, especially if you aren’t used to hot temperatures. It’s incredibly dry in June though, and there’s no humidity and no chance of rain. 

While you won’t want to be hiking, June is great for scuba diving and snorkeling, as visibility is only getting better in the Red Sea, and you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the underwater world before relaxing the rest of your day away along the beautiful coastline. 

Visiting Jordan in July 

July is the height of summer, and things can be really hot all through the month. If you’re looking for cool weather, this is most definitely not the best time to visit Jordan, and if you aren’t used to temperatures breaking the 40 degree Celsius barrier than its best to stay away. 

Given the oppressive heat though, Jordan is quiet in July and if you brave the high temperatures you’ll find that usually crowded locations such as the ruins at Petra are actually quite quiet this time of the year. You can score good deals on flights and tours too because this is low season across the country. 

Head to the coast for more great scuba diving, but make sure you book a hotel with a swimming pool or one that’s right by the beach so you can cool off in the water! 

Visiting Jordan in August 

In August, it’s still incredibly hot across Jordan with temperatures hovering between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius depending on your location. 

Again, this is still low season, and if you can beat the heat then you can score some excellent package deals and tours, and if you are on a budget, it can be the best time to visit Jordan. 

Like the rest of summer, August is great for scuba diving, and given the heat, the water is always the best place to be in Jordan when the sun is out. 

The desert and Wadi Rum are popular places to visit for budding astronomers, as in August, the annual Perseid Meteor Shower can be seen. With dark skies, Jordan is a wonderful place to experience this natural phenomenon. 

Visiting Jordan in September 

From September onwards, temperatures begin to drop slowly as the country transitions to autumn.  This is the start of peak season again, as given the colder climes it’s a great time to travel to Jordan .

It’s still very hot though, compared to winter, so be prepared to deal with the sun, particularly at midday.  For divers, September is often seen as the best time to visit Jordan, because the Red Sea has the best visibility of any time of the year.

You can see far into the depths because the water is crystal clear, as there has been no rain or runoff from the coast for months by now. 

Visiting Jordan in October 

October can be the best time to visit Jordan if you are looking to go hiking, or simply to sightsee, as you can enjoy the wonderful weather of autumn when it’s not too hot and not too cold. 

It’s very busy this time of year, but it’s great if you want to visit Wadi Rum and explore the deserts, as you can enjoy the sights and walk around attractions without working up too much of a sweat. 

Visiting Jordan in November

November is the start of winter in Jordan, and it’s very much a shoulder month when it comes to tourism.  You can expect a little rainfall as the month progresses while the nights can be very cold, especially in the desert.

It’s a good time to avoid the high season crowds but to also enjoy hot weather during the day, and it’s the last chance to really go scuba diving on the coast before the water gets colder and the visibility decreases once the rain starts to fall in heavier amounts. 

Visiting Jordan in December 

December can be rainy and cold, and it’s often not a popular time of the year to visit Jordan.  In Amman, temperatures drop drastically as you enter the dead of winter and in the desert, night time is a frigid affair. 

It can still be warmer here than many countries in the northern hemisphere, especially Europe and North America , and if you head to the coast then you can enjoy some winter sun over the Christmas period, although this is a holiday that isn’t celebrated here of course.

The Best Time to Visit Jordan: Comparing the Seasons

You are probably here because you are wondering what is the best time to visit Jordan. The answer, however, is going to depend a bit on you, your availability, and how much you like hot or cold. There is definitely a high season for visitors, and that occurs from about the middle of March when the weather starts to warm up in this part of the Middle East, until the middle of June when it starts to get really hot. The other high season is the middle of September when the weather cools off a bit to the end of November, before it gets quite wet and cold. However, there are reasons to also visit in the summer or over the Christmas holidays. It really depends on your schedule.

Why visit jordan in spring.

Mid-March, April, May and Early-June are the best time to visit Jordan. The days are warm, but not too hot, the sun is warm and bright and the nights are not fridged. The weather is usually good, but do keep in mind that the end of winter / early spring is when you can see rain / snow or sandstorms. These are rare, but do check the weather during your time in Jordan. If you are visiting Jordan in the spring, the wind can still be cool, you should pack a warm jacket and prepare for a chance of rain.

Spring is the most popular time of the year for hiking in Jordan . The weather is cool, and good for hiking. It can be very wet, so plan some flexibility into your itinerary.

Why Visit Jordan in Fall

Mid-September, October, to Mid-November is also the best time to visit Jordan. The hot summer days are gone (although it is still very warm in the sun) and the evenings are still warm. If you are visiting in November, bring a warm jacket, it can be cold as soon as the sun goes down and in the early mornings.

Fall is also high season for visitors, although it is not like other places in the world. Jordan sees just a million visitors a year to Petra, so even on busy days, it is nothing like other tourist sites in the world that see tens of thousands of visitors a day. Do not be put off by traveling in high season in Jordan.

Visiting Jordan in the Summer and Winter

As I mentioned, you can visit Jordanany time of the year. It is just that spring and fall are best, temperature-wise. I was recently there in July, and I was surprised that it was not as hot as I was expecting. It was also busy with tourists. Those who are tied to summer break holidays choose July to visit Jordan. Residents of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries also escape the unbearable heat and choose to visit Jordan, where the temperature is much more comfortable than their home country.

I did not find it too hot to hike in Jordan in the summer. Ensure you stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and cover your head with a hat or scarf.

If you are visiting in the winter, the sun is warm, but it is often cloudy with a cool breeze. You need warm clothes between November and April. Pack a winter jacket, gloves, and a hat. Dress in layers as the sun can be warm in certain areas of the country, but high elevations such as Amman and Petra are quite cool. I have an entire post about winter in Jordan. Travel Insurance for Jordan

There are a few other things to think about when it comes to travel. The first thing is travel insurance. Whether it is an emergency room visit for something as simple as strep throat, or an emergency appendix surgery, or an unfortunate moped incident things do go wrong when people travel everyday.

Best time to visit Jordan

Generally, the best time to visit Jordan is during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). The weather is more temperate, so you can explore iconic sites like Petra or the Wadi Rum without getting scorched by the sun. Granted, it's busier during these months, but if you go during a shoulder month like March or November you should miss the big crowds.

Traveling during the summer (June to August) isn't off the cards, but it can be challenging for those not accustomed to the heat as temperatures are known to top 104°F in some regions. The same goes for winter – while it's possible, heavy winter rains can cause flash floods so you may need to leave some wiggle room in your itinerary for travel disruption (not ideal if you're pushed for time).

Best for: smaller crowds, empty beaches and enjoying Jordanian hospitality

While January’s in the middle of low season (winter), it’s still a fabulous time to visit Petra without hoards of tourists lining up to queue or take photos – if you’re willing to brave the cold that is! But it is a magical feeling to walk around this ancient city when it’s super quiet. However, if you’re a keen hiker, then January in Jordan isn’t for you as popular hiking trails in Wadi Mujib or other trails near the water can close due to heavy rainfall and the risk of flash flooding.

Best for: cooking classes and café hopping

While the cold weather of winter might make you want to cuddle up in your hotel room with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate, low temperatures are perfect for exploring the many fascinating cafes, boutique stores and Jordanian hospitality found in cities all over the country. Warm up with a mint tea while people-watching in Amman, tuck into a warm khubz (pita bread) or spend the evenings learning how to make falafels, mansaf and other traditional dishes at a cooking class.

Best for: hiking and wildflower viewing

The winter chill of February is replaced with warmer conditions come March with comfortable temperatures experienced into April. And, if you want to explore Jordan’s great outdoors, spring is one of the best times to do it. Daytime highs average a comfortable 64°F-82°F and nights are cool but comfortable if you have warm layers on.

The rainy season also ends in March (but can continue on into April), so it’s a great time to go hiking as most of the trails are open and the wildflowers are blooming thanks to the winter rain. Remember to take your camera with you as you traverse valleys and hills in search of some of the most picturesque views in all of Jordan.

Best for: experiencing local culture during Ramadan

April is one of the best months to visit Jordan if you love the sun but don’t love hot weather. The Wadi Rum Desert has well and truly emerged from winter’s freezing conditions but the hottest days of summer haven’t yet arrived so April really is the sweet spot with average temperatures in the mid 70°Fs. 

Another drawcard to visiting Jordan in April is Ramadan (although the exact dates change every year depending on the crescent moon). During this month-long religious event, Muslims give up food and drink from dawn till dusk to practice spiritual discipline and become closer to God. The days might be sleepier than usual, but it’s a totally different story come evening. The streets, restaurants and cafes are buzzing with people staying up late to eat and drink, so you’ll need to plan ahead and avoid eating in public during the day, but it’s a wonderful opportunity to experience Jordanian culture.

Best for: Independence Day celebrations and experiencing the Bedouin lifestyle

Temperatures are starting to climb now that summer is around the corner with average temperatures in the mid-high 70°Fs. It’s worth noting that May is one of the busiest months out of the shoulder season, and despite weather conditions getting hotter as the month wears on, there’s still plenty of people around. If you’re keen on seeking the colder (and quieter) parts of the country, Amman experiences comfortable temperatures of 64°F-82°F, while Petra’s average temperatures fluctuate between 55°F-75°F.

Best for: Coronation Day celebrations and having fun at Aqaba Marine Park

Summers are long, hot and dry, and it all kicks off in June. Jordan experiences plenty of sunshine each year (around 300 days). Most of it falls between June and August, but unfortunately, with all that sun comes extremely high temperatures of up to 102°F (average temperatures sit around 86°F), so it’s best to carry a reusable water bottle with you whenever you’re out exploring.

Luckily, there are plenty of coastal destinations in Jordan to cool off at, starting with Aqaba. This holiday hotspot promises endless fun for kids and kids at heart thanks to the Aqaba Marine Park and popular diving spots such as Kiwi Reef and Blue Coral. There are also several beaches you can plonk yourself at for the whole day to get some vitamin D, make sandcastles and go for a swim.

Best for: festivals, visiting historic sites and cooling off in waterfalls along the Dead Sea

July is one of the hottest months in Jordan with the Dead Sea coast and the Valley of Jordan River seeing the highest temperatures - we’re talking averages of 90°F. There’s hardly any rain during the month and the wind doesn’t offer much reprieve due to such dry conditions.

But, just because it’s hot doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do! The festival calendar is jam-packed in July, including the much-anticipated Jerash Festival for Culture and Art, which celebrates the best of Jordanian art, music, culture, literature and food.

Best for: smaller crowds at popular places and indoor activities

Summer sizzles in Jordan and temperatures hit their peak in August. Highs in Amman average 88°F-91°F, and it’s even hotter along the Dead Sea coast and in the Valley of Jordan where it can reach a sweltering 100°F-108°F. The coastal city of Aqaba has occasionally topped a scorching 113°F!

While hiking may be off the cards (unless you’re experienced and prepared for the heat), summer can be a great time to visit popular sites like Petra as they’re much quieter as this time of year. Although, you should try to visit first thing in the morning before temperatures get too high.

Best for: hiking and exploring archeological sites

The intense heat of August tapers down come September with cooler days and even cooler nights, making it a prime time to visit Jordan. Daytime highs linger in the mid 80°Fs, and while that might not seem like a massive reduction, you’ll be able to feel the few degrees of difference when you’re out exploring everything this spectacular country has to offer.

However, the near perfect weather conditions attract more tourists, so be prepared for slightly higher prices, lower availability and longer queues at all the popular sites. To avoid disappointment, lock in your travel plans as soon as possible.

Best for: camping in the Wadi Rum Desert, beach lounging and diving

October sees the start of frequent rainfall, especially towards the end of the month, which adds a splash of green to the arid landscapes. Both days and nights are cool, but not yet cold, which makes for ideal camping conditions in the Wadi Rum Desert.

This is also one of the best months for beach bums as you can enjoy the beaches and swim (or float!) in the Dead Sea without getting sizzled. Diving conditions are also at their best with excellent visibility, pleasant water temperatures and abundant marine life including turtles and eagle rays.

Best for: museum visits and shopping in Amman

The weather in November in Jordan is quite moderate with average temperatures sitting in the mid 60°Fs (a welcome relief after several months of 85°F+). It’s not uncommon for the rains of October to dampen the first few weeks of November, but generally they’re quite light and don’t last long leaving you plenty of time for rain-free exploring.

Nighttime temperatures border on cold during November, especially in the Wadi Rum, so pack lots of layers to avoid discomfort once the sun goes down.

Best for: relaxing at beachside destinations along the coast and Christmas celebrations

December marks the beginning of the short, wet and windy winter season and these weather patterns are felt all over Jordan except for the country’s coastal regions (which boast warm weather all year round). Most of Jordan’s annual rainfall occurs in December and January so pack your umbrella and a few water-resistant outfits – think jackets, pants and sturdy walking shoes.

You’re also going to need plenty of layers as the temperature can dip below freezing at night in the Wadi Rum, and snow occasionally falls in higher altitude destinations like Petra, Amman and the western mountain ranges. But, if you’re looking to escape the European winter, head to the Red Sea or the Dead Sea coast for a beach holiday where average highs hover in the mid to high 60s°F.

For those looking to make the most of the country by travelling the length of it, spring (March to May) is widely considered to be the best time of year to visit Jordan. It’s when temperatures are toasty, but not scorching, wildflowers are out everywhere (even the desert is covered with them, and the hills and valleys running down the centre of the country are lush and colourful.

The worst of the rain is over by March, though it doesn’t entirely peter out in northern Amman and its surrounding hills until late April. Humidity is pleasant everywhere, and low, clear sunlight draws a spectacular kaleidoscope of colour and texture from the desert rocks.

There’s only one drawback – a desert wind, loaded with dust and grit, which blows regularly each spring or early summer out of the Arabian interior. This is known across the Middle East as the khamseen (“fifty”), after the fifty days it traditionally persists (although in Jordan it rarely lasts longer than a few days), and can darken the sky and raise the temperature by 10°C, coating everyone and everything in a layer of sand.

Jordan is a year-round destination – but despite its small size, you’ll find wide variations in climate, often reliant on the topography: Amman, Petra and Wadi Rum all lie well over 800m above sea level, Dana and Ajloun are even higher (up to 1500m), whereas the Dead Sea lies 400m below sea level. This means that deciding on when to go to Jordan depends on where you’re intending to visit.

Jordan is 90% covered by desert and so summers are red hot. The beaches of Aqaba and the Dead Sea, for example, can reach 40°C in the month of July. It’s worth remembering that the nights are cold, though – the sands of Wadi Rum can drop to 4°C in winter, for example.

By contrast, the north west is relatively green and so unsurprisingly receives Jordan’s highest annual rainfall, with peaks in January of 69mm. It, along with Petra (at 1,100m elevation), are among the coolest parts of Jordan.

Assuming that you’re keen to travel around a little, the best month to visit Jordan is either in April or May. Most of the rain has cleared up and temperatures haven’t yet hit the sizzling highs of the summer, which have been known to hit 45°C.

It’s a particularly good time for hikers to go to Jordan too, as wild flowers are in bloom in the country’s lush valleys and rolling hills. It’s worth remembering that evenings remain cool, though, particularly in the north west around Amman.

When to visit Jordan in winter

In winter (roughly Dec to Feb), Amman can be desperately chilly, with biting winds sweeping through the valleys, rain showers and even snowfall, although the sun is still never far away.

With short days and freezing nights, Petra winters can be taxing; exceptional lows of -8°C have been recorded.

Wadi Rum is more temperate, but Aqaba makes a fine retreat, with sunshine and warmth even in the depths of January (average Red Sea and Dead Sea water temperatures vary little either side of a balmy 24°C all year).

Visiting Jordan in December to February

It might be mid winter, but for some this can be the best time to visit Jordan. For instance, southern Aqaba on the northern shores of the Red Sea, is warm (up to 23°C) with plenty of sunshine and a pleasant water temperature for comfortable beach-focused holidays.

Amman and Petra, with their higher elevation, are less hospitable, with snow not uncommon in the former. It’s the choppy winds that people comment on the most, so if you’re planning a trip, be sure to dress appropriately.

When to visit Jordan in spring

Spring time in Jordan spans March until the end of May. Temperature wise, it’s thought of as the best time to visit Jordan, owing to agreeable temperatures, and as such is Jordan’s high season. Be sure to reserve rooms ahead of time in touristy areas.

If you’re keen to avoid the rains, it’s best to visit Jordan in late April or May, but be mindful that things start to hot up around then, particularly around the Dead Sea and Aqaba in the south.

May, however, is the best time of year to visit Petra. Rainfall is low at 4mm and temperatures very rarely get any higher than 30°C.

Visiting Jordan in March

March marks the beginning of spring in Jordan, when the cold winds and rain of winter are beginning to subside and wild flowers take bloom across the north of the country .

There is still rainfall across Jordan in March but showers tend to be short and sharp. Hikers start to make an appearance around this time of year, particularly in the hills around the Dead Sea and in Jordan’s nature reserves.

When to visit Jordan in summer

In summer (roughly June to Sept), Amman can sizzle – up to 40°C in the city centre – though it’s a dry heat, rarely uncomfortable, and the hills catch some cooler breezes.

Temperatures at the Dead Sea and Aqaba have been known to top 45°C, with Aqaba in particular suffering from an intolerable hot wind that makes you feel like you’re basting in a fan-assisted oven.

High, hazy light flattens the brown landscape and bleaches any beauty out of the desert. Copy the locals and treat the hours between noon and 3pm as a time to snooze in the cool indoors. One disadvantage of summer travel is that it’s peak season for tourism from the Gulf countries.

Visiting Jordan in June to August

You won’t very often here people saying that the best time to go to Jordan is between June and August. That’s because it’s hot – really hot. Particularly around the Dead Sea where the mercury rises to a balmy 40°C in August.

That said, the heat is dry, therefore rarely uncomfortable, and the hills can enjoy refreshing breezes. At the height of summer you’ll also receive a wondrous 13 hours of sunshine. Despite the heat, summer is when the bulk of Jordan’s festivals are held. The Jerash Festival for Culture and Art is well worth a visit. It takes place in Jerash in July, focusing on Jordanian dance and music.

Besides the weather, it’s worth remembering that the hajj will take place in July for the next three years. While the pilgrimage is bound for Mecca in Saudia Arabia, many connecting flights come through Jordan and so planes are block booked. Book well in advance.

When to visit Jordan in autumn

Typical autumn weather (mid-Sept to mid-Nov) mostly passes Jordan by, with only a few weeks marking the shift out of high summer. But if you catch it, this can be a lovely time to visit. The first rains fall in early or mid-October, making the parched countryside bloom again and temperatures drop to more manageable levels.

Visiting Jordan in September to November

Everyone is pleased at the arrival of autumn in September as temperatures finally start to cool down to bearable levels. The shoulder months of September to November in Jordan are the best time to go to Aqaba and the Red Sea, though prices rise as temperatures go down.

October, in particular, is a good time to visit as the first rain begins to fall following a blistering summer, which in turns make the parched countryside bloom again. October is also the best time to go diving in the Red Sea around Aqaba: the water is a comfortable 26°C and marine life is abundant.

The best time to visit Petra – Jordan’s most popular attraction – is in spring, when temperatures are neither too hot or cold. May, in particular, is a winner, because rainfall is very low (at 4mm) and thermometers are unlikely to read above 30°C. This is high season, though, so don’t expect to have the place to yourself.

Petra’s high elevation means that temperatures stay ‘doable’ throughout the summer months, peaking in August at 32°C. Beat the crowds and peak heat by arriving at around 5am in time for the rising sun.

In autumn things begin to cool off again and temperatures remain comfortable all the way through to November. In winter, you can expect short days and freezing nights; exceptional lows of -8°C have been recorded.

If you’re feeling up to it, though, a winter trip to Petra has its advantages: the low light creates much more variation in the colour of the sandstone. In summer – Jun to Aug – any such distinctions are largely washed out.

Air fares peak in the periods surrounding major Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, when thousands – or, in the case of the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, millions – of people are on the move.

For weeks before the hajj (which takes place in July until 2023), whole planes get block-booked for pilgrims on many routes into the Middle East – not just flights into Saudi Arabia, but also connections via Jordan and neighbouring countries. For two weeks after the pilgrimage, few planes out of the region have spare capacity.

Another consideration when thinking about the best time to travel to Jordan is, of course, Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. Dates change each year and for 2020, it falls in April. It pays to check when Islamic holidays are due to fall; book well ahead if you want to fly at or near those times.

One thing to watch when planning an itinerary is your scheduled arrival time: many flights from London, for instance, are afternoon departures, landing in Amman in the late evening – which means your head may not actually hit the pillow until midnight or later.

In addition, many return flights to London take off from Amman at breakfast time, necessitating a pre-dawn wake-up call.

Average temperatures in Jordan vary greatly. Considering humidity, temperatures feel very nice much of the year, but hot in the summer and cold in the winter with a very low chance of rain or snow throughout the year. The area is somewhat temperate — in the 55th percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Jordan, the hottest months are August, July, and then June. See average monthly temperatures below. The warmest time of year is generally early August where highs are regularly around 99°F (37.2°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 73.1°F (22.8°C) at night.

Jordan has some comfortably humid months, and dry months in the opposite season. The least humid month is June (28.7% relative humidity), and the most humid month is January (52.5%).

Wind in Jordan is usually calm . The windiest month is June, followed by July and May. June’s average wind speed of around 5.9 knots (6.8 MPH or 10.9 KPH) is considered “a light breeze.” Maximum sustained winds (the highest speed for the day lasting more than a few moments) are at their highest in early to mid March where average top sustained speeds reach 13.1 knots, which is considered a moderate breeze.

The Busiest and Least Crowded Months

The busiest month for tourism in Jordan is June, followed by July and August. Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit Jordan in December. Those willing to visit at these times will likely find it the least expensive month.

Humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel warm. Highs range from 91.6°F (33.1°C) and 65.3°F (18.5°C) with warmer temperatures in the later months. Rain is extremely rare with 0 to 1 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the second busiest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.

Summer (June through August)

The middle-year months have very comfortable weather with high temperatures that are quite warm. These months see the least precipitation with about 0 days of precipitation per month. June – August is the busiest season for tourism in Jordan, so lodging and other accommodations may cost more than usual.

Fall (September through November)

Fall daily highs range from 94.8°F (34.9°C) and 69.2°F (20.7°C), which will feel very nice given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a barely noticeable amount: 0 to 1 days per month. Tourism is the slowest during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be affordably priced.

Winter (December through February)

Weather is too cold this time of year in Jordan to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 66.6°F (19.2°C) and 56.7°F (13.7°C). On average, it rains or snows a smalll amount: 1 to 2 times per month. These times of year are fairly slow with tourists.

5 Things to Know Before Visiting Jordan in Winter

Many people wonder what is the best time to visit Jordan. Jordan is really a year round destination that can be enjoyed at anytime of the year. With that being said, when you are planning to visit Jordan in winter, you will want to read this entire post. Jordan has 4 distinct seasons and winter in Jordan is actually quite cold. The desert of Wadi Rum dips down below freezing at night and snow is not uncommon in Amman and on the desert highway.

When visiting Jordan in winter, you may find that some attractions (mostly hiking ones) only operate seasonally. That is because the winter and early spring brings most of the country’s annual rainfall and flash flooding can cause dangerous conditions in the mountains and streams.

But do not be put off by Jordan in winter, there are a few benefits for visitors. Since it is the off-season, you might find yourself alone at one of the major tourist sites. I remember when I was in Jerash for the first time, I wondered where everyone was! While hotels do not change their prices a lot in the winter, you might find some deals and you will for sure have more availability when you visit Jordan in winter.

If you are traveling to Jordan over Christmas break, this is a busy travel period all over the world. Ensure you book your airfare well in advance as well as any tours or hotels. You do not want to miss out on that once-in-a-lifetime visit because everything was sold out, or flight prices skyrocketed before you had the chance to book! But do not let that discourage you from visiting Jordan over Christmas break if that is the best time for you. You will still see little crowds at this time of year, I just do not want you to miss out if you plan on booking a tour!

5 Things you need to know about Jordan in Winter

1. it is off season and crowds should be light in jordan in winter.

While I touched on this above, winter is a great time to visit Jordan as it is mostly low season. Apart from Christmas break (which is high season almost all over the world), there are few visitors to Jordan from December to February.

The low visitors means that you can wander ancient wonders like Petra without tour groups around every corner of the Siq. You will have very little problems getting around and plenty of hotels have lots of availability! If you are visiting Petra in high season, on some nights it is almost impossible to find a room! This is not the case in winter in Jordan!

As I mentioned above, this does not apply over the Christmas period and you should book any tours or hotels in advance! But other than those two weeks, for most of the winter in Jordan, you will have very limited crowds.

2. You do not need to worry about modesty in cold weather

Jordan is a Muslim country and conservative dress (for men and women) is mu suggestion for anyone visiting.

I am about to visit Jordan in the summer, and I am WAYYYYYY overthinking my wardrobe. The thought of hiking in pants and long sleeves ? Can i wear this dress? Does this show too much cleavage? When you visit Jordan in winter, these thoughts go out the door. Thoughts of, will this jacket be warm enough, do I have gloves, do I have a toque, should be on your mind if you are visiting Jordan in winter.

Something else to take into account when you are visiting Jordan in winter is heating. While hotels should have adequate heating, it might not be central heating. If you are staying in a local home it will NOT be central heating and if you are in a camp in Wadi Rum, book one with a heater!

Many hotels have a single heater/air conditioner in the room that should suffice to keep you warm. If you are in a private home, baseboard-style heaters are common, as are portable propane gas and electric space heaters. This usually means that you need to move them from room to room. I suggest you bring warm clothes for wearing indoors.

Camping in Wadi Rum is going to require warm clothes! Many of the luxury tents have heaters, but it is still just a space heater. Bring your long johns and a toque to keep warm as the nights can drop below freezing!

Packing properly for Jordan in Winter is probably the single best piece of advice that I can give you. 

I have told people countless times that a windbreaker is not going to cut it if you are visiting Jordan in February. Ok if you plan on wearing a fleece underneath and the dry cold does not bother you then feel free to prove me wrong. I will continue to suggest down-filled jackets, plenty of layers, warm socks, gloves and toques. You also want something that is waterproof if you do not have a flexible itinerary and end up wandering Jerash or Petra on a really wet day! (my feet have gotten soaked multiple times in Jordan, whether waiting for a taxi, or walking to my car, or just crossing the street!) The drainage in Amman is non-existent which means that the streets turn into rivers as the water goes down the hilly streets!

3. Winter in Jordan means the beaches are EMPTY (But COLD)

While it will likely be in the 20s (that is degrees Celcius for my American friends) at the Red Sea and the Dead Sea, you are not going to see summer warmth at the beaches. The breeze can be cool at the beach, even in March and April and the hotel pools are FREEZING all year round (except the heated ones).

Depending where you are from, you might enjoy the 20-25 degree weather at the Red Sea in Aqaba. Ensure you have sunscreen as even that winter sun can burn!

The Dead Sea is always warmer than Amman due to its position as the lowest point on Earth and the surrounding hills. I have been there while it has been raining, but it is still definitely warmer than Amman in the winter!  I have a whole post about getting to the Dead Sea from Amman .

4. Have a flexible Itinerary when visiting Jordan in Winter

While most of Jordan may be classified as desert, it is actually made up of 4 climate zones with huge altitude variations and microclimates. In the winter, there can be inclement weather, and it is usually seen in advance. Sites like Petra will close if they are expecting heavy rains as the rain water pours off the tall Siq cliffs and a torrent of water ends up running down the Siq.

It can be dangerous and the flooding in Jordan takes lives every year.

I highly suggest that if you are visiting Jordan in winter to pack some flexibility into your itinerary if you are not on a fully guided tour. You do not want to get rained out of Petra or even deal with a sand storm in your Wadi Rum Camp .

Pay attention to the weather forcasts and check with the front desk at the hotel. Those are the first to places to start to find out if bad weather is expected today, or in the future!

You also want to worry about SNOW! Yes, it can snow in Jordan, especially in Amman, and everything comes to a standstill in the snow. Amman is made up of several hills and when going from A to B you will have to go up or down a hill at some point. Without snow tires, cars just slide. If you are trying to use the desert highway in the snow, be wary of fast moving vehicles who are not driving for the conditions and ensure you are driving for the conditions yourself.

5. Plan for Short Days

It can get dark before 5pm (around 4:30 at the shortest day of the year) in the winter in Jordan so take that into account when planning your day. If you do not want to be driving in the dark you will have to plan ahead to make sure you are at your destination before dark.

So what to do with all that dark? There are plenty of great restaurants in Amman to grab a meal. You can also take a cooking class to learn more about Jordanian cuisine. There is a lively coffeeshop / cafe scene in Amman in the evening and you will find plenty of locals who are socializing with a coffee and shisha.

So what to do in Jordan in Winter

Almost everything is at your disposal when you visit Jordan in the winter. While some hiking trails will be closed and it might not feel like beach weather, there is still plenty to enjoy.

What to Pack for Jordan in Winter

Wondering what to wear in Jordan in winter? You are not the only one! I have been to Jordan in every season and have made a few packing mistakes along the way!

• Down Jacket that is ideally waterproof. This is what I suggest to everyone. Down jackets pack really well and they do a great job of keeping the body heat in. Pack gloves and a toque as well.
• Water resistant shoes. While you can get away with sneakers or running shoes, if possible, bring something that has a bit of water resistance to it. I also pack wool socks. They keep my feet warm and they do not smell!!
• Water bottle with filter. We use this one and it filters hotel water in the morning meaning we do not need to use bottled water during the day!
• Sunglasses are always recommended. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the breeze maybe cold, but you are likely to have some sunny days while you are in Jordan.

Jordan Winter Weather

When planning a visit to Jordan in winter you want to be ready for rain and the possibility of snow. The rainy season begins at the end of November and continues till the end of March. However, in 2018 and 2019 April had above average rainfall. But the rain that Jordan receives is sporadic and it is very unlikely that you will have rain for your whole trip. 

The coldest months of the year are December and January, where temperatures average about 13 degrees Celsius but can drop to around 5 degrees. In areas with an altitude of 1000 meters and above, (such as Amman) there is a chance of snowfall in winter. Petra and Wadi Rum have even been known to receive a skiff of snow.

What to do in Jordan in the Rain

If you have a really rainy day while you are in Amman you may want to adjust your itinerary. Instead of any outdoor activities you might want to consider the Automobile museum (Or if you have kids, check out the Children’s Museum, it is similar to a science center. There are a few giant malls in Jordan, Mecca Mall and City Mall are two of them.

If you are in Petra and it is raining, listen to the tourist police as they will know if there are any flash flood warnings in the area.

Jordan in Winter Safety Tips

Jordan is a safe country to visit overall. I have never felt unsafe while there and I use the same cautions that I would when visiting any country.

In the winter in Jordan there are certain extra considerations when it comes to driving. When it is raining be wary of traffic. Cars do not have great tread on their tires so they can easily slip in the rain. In the snow, the city almost shuts down as the hills and twists and turns makes driving almost impossible.

Flash floods are another thing to be mindful of during heavy rains in Jordan. When it does rain, flash floods can be extremely dangerous. Last winter Amman saw terrible flash floods, as did Petra!

Jordan is famous for its historical and cultural sites, and Petra is a must-see for most travelers due to its remarkable rock-carved architecture and rose-red landscape.

Since you may spend most of your time at these outdoor attractions, the best times to visit Jordan for the best weather are during the spring and autumn seasons (from March to May and September to November).

During these times, the weather is pleasant at about 23°C (73°F) and it barely rains, most people don't have vacations to travel to Jordan, making these the best times to visit at a reasonable cost.

Visiting Jordan during the winter season (from December to February) can also be a good decision, but be prepared for the swarming tourists from all over the world.   For trips during Christmas and the New Year, departing before December 20th is beneficial for obtaining cheaper international flight tickets.

Winter is cool in Jordan at about 10°C (50°F) during the day, but this temperature can vary at different altitudes. Places like Mount Nebo may be lower than -2°C (28°F) and you may think twice before making your excursion.

Additionally, by visiting a northern area of Jordan, such as Amman or Jerash, you may witness unique beauty when snow falls on the city during this peak season, and experience the festive atmosphere when people celebrate Christmas and New Year.

Typically it would cost 250 USD per person per day in the shoulder season but expect to face larger crowds and higher prices with a 30% increase in accommodation and flights.

In conclusion, reserving your trip at least 6 months in advance is highly recommended.

Typically, the worst time to visit Jordan is between July and August due to the unbearable summer heat.

The summer daily high temperature in Jordan averages 37°C (99°F). The fierce sunshine above (for more than 13 hours per day) makes outdoor activities and sightseeing uncomfortable and exhausting for most.

However, if you are prepared for the heat, you'll get a great deal on flights and accommodation with a 20% decrease, due to summer being the low season in Jordan.

Rain or snow mainly falls in northern parts of Jordan (such as Amman and Jerash) during the winter season, and most of the rain is short-lived, which would barely affect well-prepared travel plans.

So when you're planning your trip, all you need to do is focus on the temperature range that suits your needs.

Jordan in January: Enjoy the Hot Springs near the Dead Sea

January is the middle month of the winter season in Jordan, with cool temperatures of about 10°C (50°F) during the day.

In January, hiking in northern parts of Jordan, such as Amman and Jerash, may not be easy because you may encounter showers of cold rain or snow.

Due to the Dead Sea being the lowest point on Earth, it's still warm in winter, making it a wonderful winter escape destination where you can enjoy the hot springs or simply swim in the warm Dead Sea water.

Holidays: Typically, the school winter break in Jordan lasts for a month and takes place from January to February, which means you may expect higher prices and more crowds during this period. So plan your trip at least 6 months in advance to try to avoid price increases.

Jordan in February: Last Month Before the Rush of Crowds

February is the last winter month when the temperature starts to rise, averaging 14°C (57°F) during the day.

Since the winter break is over and the first peak season (from March to May) is yet to come, it can be a good time to visit the southern areas of Jordan , such as Petra, Wadi Rum, and Aqaba, at a reasonable cost.

Remember to take a warm coat with you and beware of the large drop in temperature at night (it drops to about 5°C/41°F).

Jordan in March: Trekking into Nature for Spring Flowers

March is the beginning of spring in Jordan, with pleasant weather and a temperature of about 20°C (68°F) during the day, making it one of the best times to visit Jordan.

Family groups with teenagers who are interested in nature may have a good time trekking during this period.

Trekking in the warm springtime, you can often witness the beautiful blooms of wildflowers and explore wildlife reserves, such as Jordan Valley, Azraq Wetland Reserve, and Dana Nature Reserve, where you can see the best spring views.

Festivals: Ramadan in Jordan, a floating holiday that falls between March 10 and April 9 in 2024, depends on the Muslim calendar. For a whole month, Muslims abstain from food and drink during the daytime.

You won't be expected to fast as a visitor, but most local shops and attractions may close earlier by about 2 hours. So you need to find some non-Muslim shops to meet your needs, or simply reach out to us to tailor-make a personalized itinerary for you.

Jordan in April: Pleasant Weather for Easter Holiday Travel

April can be the busiest month with the Easter holidays , which means visitors from Europe and North America would most likely choose Jordan to enjoy its pleasant weather (about 25°/77°F) and wonderful attractions.

For a holiday break, Aqaba can be a good choice for you as the temperature reaches 29°C (84°F) during the day.

With a sunny day to relax on the beach or participate in water sports with warm and clear seawater (scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing...), either one can make your vacation very enjoyable.

Jordan in May: Last Month with Pleasant Weather Before the Summer Heat

May is the last month before the summer season (from June to August) and has great weather (about 27°C/81°F) for planning a round-trip in Jordan.

No matter whether you decide to hike in Petra, float on the Dead Sea, or camp in Wadi Rum, it would be a great time to fully witness the beauty of Jordan .

Still, the crowds are swarming and the prices of accommodation are high, so you may need to visit the popular attractions earlier to avoid the crowds (at 6/7am).

Jordan in June: The Coolest Month of the Summer Season

June is very warm, but still bearable, with the temperature averaging 30°C (86°F) during the day. In desert regions and alongside the Red Sea, it may exceed 35°C (95°F).

Due to the hot temperature and dry air, June is the start of the low season. Most people won't choose June to visit Jordan, which means you can easily beat the crowds and plan your trip on a budget.

What's more, you can get a good experience in Aqaba, where you can still enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling in humid air and with a beautiful seascape.

Jordan in July and August: The Hottest Months of the Year

July and August, with the temperature exceeding 37°C (99°F), are considered the worst times to travel to Jordan.

With the school summer holiday starting, the coastlines of the Red Sea and the Dead Sea are swarming with locals.

But some famous attractions, such as those in Petra or Jerash, would be visited only by a few who brave the heat and you will get more room to fully explore these historical sites .

To avoid the heat and heatstroke, try to arrange your trip early in the morning and make sure you take enough water and sunscreen with you.

Jordan in September: Best Diving Time of the Year in Aqaba

The temperature starts to drop in September but it is still very warm in the daytime at about 32°C (90°F). Prepare for the last heat from summer when you plan to do some hiking or other outdoor activities.

As the school summer holiday ends and you can benefit from the best visibility underwater at the Red Sea, it is the best time to visit Aqaba in September for scuba diving and swimming.

During this time, not only can you get the chance to encounter numerous marine creatures but you can also get the best prices without sacrificing any experiences.

Jordan in October: Great Time to Explore the Desert

As the middle month of the autumn season, October has a pleasantly warm temperature all across the country at about 27°C/81°F. It would be a good choice no matter where you choose to go.

However, we highly recommend that you visit Wadi Rum.

During this period, the weather is great and the sky is clear. You can fully appreciate the great scenery of the moon-like landscape by bathing in the morning/evening colors in a hot-air balloon, or camping in the desert overnight to witness the galaxy in a romantic tent trip.

Jordan in November: Hiking in the Humid Air and Mild Weather

November is considered to be the shoulder month before December. It has humid air and mild weather at about 23°C (73°F), which is great for outdoor activities.

During this time, hiking in the Dana Nature Reserve , which is only 1-hour drive away from Petra, can be a good choice.

You can expect a little rainfall to humidify the air and to see some wild animals, which emerge after the rain. However, it can get chilly at night with the temperature dropping to 10°C (50°F), so remember to take some warm clothes with you.

Jordan in December: Best Time to Enjoy the Festive Atmosphere

December is a little cold, as it sees the start of winter , averaging 15°C (59°F) in the day, but many visitors from Europe and North America still like to choose Jordan to celebrate their Christmas and New Year holidays.

Jordan is believed to contain the location where Jesus was baptized among other Biblical sites of interest.

Major cities, such as Amman and Aqaba, come alive with festivities, with vibrant decorations, concerts, and cultural events, offering visitors a festive and joyful atmosphere to celebrate.

You can celebrate the festivals with both your family and friends, enjoying the holy songs around you and warm sweet smells from the stalls.

There are so many things to love about visiting Jordan, from the majesty of Petra to the otherworldly landscape of Wadi Rum to the fact that with even 5 days in Jordan, you can craft a Jordan itinerary that you’ll never forget!

Jordan’s small size and ease of travel make it a fantastic introduction to the Middle East.

No matter how long you have to explore, you’ll no doubt leave some stones unturned… but have even more once-in-a-lifetime experiences along the way.

With less than a week in Jordan, you can visit a wide variety of the country’s iconic attractions, including floating in the Dead Sea, exploring some of the best-preserved Roman ruins outside of Italy, camping in Wadi Rum, riding a camel, and hiking through the Lost City of Petra.

… and that’s just the beginning.

We designed this 5-7 day Jordan itinerary as a loop beginning and ending in Amman.

It is primarily intended as a road trip–and yes, you can absolutely road trip Jordan with relative ease!

However, if you don’t want to drive, through a combination of organized tours, public transportation, and/or private transfers, you can easily spend a week in Jordan without a car, as well.

This itinerary is intended for travelers enjoying their first trip to Jordan who are hoping to hit up the country’s biggest highlights in a very limited time.

And, since Jordan is such a small and easy-to-navigate country, that is quite doable!

If you drove this route straight through without detours, it would include a little over 12 hours of driving in the whole loop.

Taking a road trip in Jordan is an absolute delight, and this itinerary is perfect for doing so!

Jordan’s roads are well-marked and (outside of Amman), fairly simple to navigate.

You can still have a fantastic time in Jordan!

While navigating this itinerary via public transportation alone would be cumbersome, guided tours can offer excellent value for money and keep your trip planning simple.

Basing yourself primarily in Amman and booking a multi-day tour like this to see Petra and Wadi Rum, and then supplementing with day trips like this to places like Jerash, is absolutely a valid way to have a fantastic Jordan vacation.

For virtually all travelers planning a trip to Jordan based on this itinerary, the Jordan Pass is a must-buy before you go!

The pass is organized by the Jordanian government and includes entrance fees to more than 40 of the top attractions in Jordan, including Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash, and many more.

It also covers the cost of your visa on arrival!

The pricing of the pass is structured in such a way that once you account for the cost of your visa and entrance to Petra, the pass has already paid for itself, making it an easy win.

However, make sure that you purchase and download your pass before flying into Amman!

When we went through immigration, the family next to us in line ended up having to purchase a separate visa because they only screenshotted their pass confirmation and didn’t download it before arriving.

Day 1 in Jordan: Explore the ruins of Jerash and float in the Dead Sea.

If you’re trying to see Jordan in 5 days, you’ll want to hit the ground running as soon as you land in the country!

After getting your rental car in Amman, drive north to explore one of the best-preserved Roman cities outside of Italy.

Explore the Roman city of Jerash.

Stepping foot inside Jerash is an incredible experience, and it reminded me immediately of exploring Pompeii in Italy (but in Jordan, we got to start our visit with a freshly squeezed pomegranate juice in hand).

Don’t miss the magnificent South Theater (climb to the top for the full effect–the acoustics are incredible), Oval Plaza, or Cardo Maximus column-lined street.

You’ll also find beautiful temples, including ones dedicated to Zeus and Artemis, in Jerash.

Head to the Dead Sea to float your worries away.

Once you wrap up at Jerash, make your way to the Dead Sea, where you can float your worries away in one of the most unique landscapes on Earth!

Jordan’s side of the Dead Sea lends itself to luxurious resorts with private beaches that are more affordable than you might think.

… And, since the Dead Sea is shrinking every year, it’s worth a bit of a splurge.

This is one of those “experience-it-while-you-can” attractions!

Plus, floating in the Dead Sea, while iconic, doesn’t take very long, making it easy to fit into a 5 day Jordan itinerary.

Due to the salt content in the water, it’s recommended to only stay in the water for 15 minutes or so per visit.

Day 2 in Jordan: Spend the night camping in Wadi Rum.

After waking up at the Dead Sea, enjoying the gigantic breakfast spread at the Dead Sea Marriot Resort , and possibly going for a morning float, it’s time to head south!

The final destination of your second day in Jordan is the otherworldly Wadi Rum, but consider making a quick detour before you go!

Wander through Kerak Castle.

Kerak Castle (often also written as Alkarak Castle) is one of the largest and best-preserved Crusader Castles in Jordan.

Dating to the 1100s, everything from the castle’s structures to the views here are incredible, and it’s a fascinating side stop during your road trip in Jordan.

Drive to the incredible Wadi Rum Protected Area.

After seeing the castle, make your way to Wadi Rum for one of the most memorable nights of your life!

The Wadi Rum Protected Area is, more or less, a desert landscape that looks like Mars crossed with Utah .

It’s the traditional home of Bedouin people, who host guests like us in their special landscape today.

It’s also a popular filming location (see: Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars, Dune, and many more).

Wadi Rum is a magnificent destination and hands down one of the best places to visit in Jordan.

We’ve written an entire guide to Wadi Rum to help you plan your trip in detail, but here’s the short version: this afternoon, take either a camel or Jeep tour, and then spend the night at a Bedouin Camp.

Camps range from extremely basic to the famous and luxurious Bubble Luxotel .

We opted for the middle-of-the-road Candles Camp and had a fantastic time!

Day 3 in Jordan: Adventure across Wadi Rum and drive to Petra.

We go over this in more detail in our Wadi Rum guide , but essentially, your time in Wadi Rum should absolutely include both a Jeep tour and a camel ride!

The Jeep tour takes much longer and is a great option for this morning (however, you can also do a sunset Jeep tour and sunrise camel tour instead–it all depends on your exact schedule).

Once you wrap up exploring the majestic beauty of Wadi Rum, it’s time to drive to Petra!

The drive to Petra (or more specifically, Wadi Musa, the modern village outside of Petra) from Wadi Rum takes a couple of hours, give or take.

In other words, you can take your time enjoying Wadi Rum and plan to arrive in Wadi Musa to settle in for the next day, which will arguably be the busiest of your trip!

Day 4 in Jordan: Marvel at the Lost City of Petra.

The crown jewel of any trip to Jordan, the Lost City of Petra more than lived up to our sky-high expectations!

While the famous Treasury is just as incredible as described, the full experience of visiting Petra, from the Monastery to the Siq slot canyon to the lesser-known highlights like the Royal Tombs, is beyond words.

Like other incredible ruin sites around the world such as Pompeii , Angkor Wat , Becan , and more, part of the incredible appeal of Petra lies not just in its photogenic attractions but in the fact that you can truly feel the layout of the city as you explore.

While it would be very easy to spend several days exploring all that Petra has to offer, with only 5 days in Jordan to work with, it’s realistic to plan for one.

How to Structure Your Day in Petra, Jordan

In order to make the most of your one day in Petra, we highly recommend taking advantage of Petra’s lesser-used “back door”.

By using the back door, you’ll first hike to the Monastery (or Ad Dier) at the back of the park, and then walk to the main entrance in Wadi Musa throughout the day, passing by all of Petra’s highlights and saving the Treasury for the grand finale.

You’ll also be able to reverse the 800+ step climb to the Monastery and go down the steps instead!

This is an official entrance, though barely used compared to the crowded front gate.

We absolutely adored using this method and felt that we were able to make the most of our time in Petra without feeling rushed, since we knew we didn’t have to turn around and hike back out.

Your hotel can help you arrange transport to the back door–we stayed at Petra Aretas Hotel and they were great about arranging a ride for us, with a mini-tour on the way!

Petra Aretas Hotel also served a great breakfast and is located within walking distance of the main entrance of Petra.

Day 5 in Jordan: Make your way back to Amman (with sightseeing stops).

On the final day of your 5 day Jordan itinerary, it’s time to make your way back to Amman.

Assuming you have most of a day to work with, though, you’ll find plenty of incredible sightseeing opportunities as you road trip from Wadi Musa back to Amman!

Here are just a few sights to consider adding to your list of things to do in Jordan.

To appreciate a different side of Jordan’s impressive history, enjoy a quick stop in the charming city of Madaba.

While there are a handful of interesting sights and a shopping street to peruse, without a doubt Madaba’s top attraction is the intricate 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land, found on the floor of the Church of Saint George.

Known as the Madaba Map, this striking mosaic is considered to be the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land.

The Baptismal Site of Jesus Christ

Just north of the Dead Sea in Jordan, you’ll find the reported Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, which for thousands of years has been considered the location where John the Baptist baptized Jesus.

While the site is very popular (you can even be baptized there if you choose), it’s also highly managed and a bit–dare I say it–commercialized.

If you’d like to visit, you’ll need to join a group tour, and admission is not included in most Jordan Passes.

Mount Nebo is a highly significant site in the Abrahamic religions and is believed to be the place where Moses glimpsed the Holy Land before he died.

Today, you’ll find sweeping views, beautiful memorials, and art from several cultures on top of the mountain–and on a clear day, you can even see all the way to Jerusalem!

The Moses Memorial Church is a striking blend of extremely old (the church originally dates to the 4th century), and the extremely new, with a 21st-century building surrounding historic mosaics.

King’s Highway Viewpoints

There are two essential roads in Jordan that you’ll hear a lot about when planning a Jordan road trip: the Desert Highway (fast, efficient, but a bit dull), and the King’s Highway (which takes longer, but is also more scenic).

For this 5-7 day Jordan itinerary, we recommend driving part of the Desert Highway on your way to Wadi Rum (when your schedule is more packed) and then taking the King’s Highway all the way up as you head north.

You’ll come across plenty of striking viewpoints as you travel, so be sure to safely pull over and snap photos at a few!

We personally found the northern section of the King’s Highway more scenic than the southern section.

Where to Stay For Your Final Night in Jordan

If your experience is like ours (and for many of your guys flying back out of the region, it will be), your flight out of Jordan will leave very, very early in the morning.

To make life a little easier on ourselves, we checked into this peaceful hotel near the airport for the “night” (our wakeup call to head to the airport was at 1:00 AM).

The rooms were comfortable and the service excellent.

They were even able to call us a taxi and ensure that we were picked up on time, making our bleary-eyed final few hours in Jordan much less stressful.

Add a day in Amman.

With 6 days in Jordan, you should absolutely add a day in Amman!

Jordan’s lively capital city offers a chance to see a completely different side of the country than the wild country landscapes and archaeological sites do.

Tour the famous Amman Citadel (and soak in its incredible views), explore the Roman Theater (that is still used for performances!), and visit Rainbow Street.

The King Abdullah I Mosque is one of the only mosques in Jordan that non-Muslims can enter, and is also worth seeing.

If it fits into your schedule, the Jordan Museum is also well worth a visit–some of the Dead Sea Scrolls are on display there!

For cheap and delicious eats, don’t miss the famous falafel and hummus at Hashem Restaurant, or the delicious kunefe located just up the road at Habibah.

Slow down or add a day in Aqaba.

Our number one itinerary suggestion if you have a full week in Jordan to work with is simply to slow down!

This suggested route is incredibly packed, and while that’s sustainable for 5-6 days in order to pack in Jordan’s best sights with very limited time, you can’t keep it up forever.

A second day spent in Petra, Wadi Rum, or even the Dead Sea area can add a lot of depth to your trip without having to find yet another hotel to stay in.

If you’re feeling energized, though, a 7 day Jordan itinerary could also be expanded to include a day of scuba diving and/or snorkeling in Aqaba.

Other options include a hike in a slot canyon like Wadi Mujib, time spent in the Dana Biosphere Reserve, or a soak in the Ma’in Hot Springs.

For something more history-focused, visiting another one of Jordan’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Quesir Amra or Um er-Rasas are also very interesting options.

While you can absolutely enjoy a week in Jordan year-round, spring and fall are considered the optimal times to visit in order to balance crowds and weather.

Summer can be searing hot, however, it’s also the best time to go scuba diving down in Aqaba–if you’re a diver, you may choose to brave the heat inland in order to optimize your time at the Red Sea!

If you plan a winter trip to Jordan, don’t assume you’ll stay warm!

Winters in Jordan can definitely get cold, and you may even experience snow in Amman.

We took our Jordan road trip in March and enjoyed excellent, mild weather throughout our trip.

Here are a few essentials that you should definitely add to your packing list as you prepare for 5 days in Jordan (or more!).

Travel Insurance  — We don’t ever suggest traveling without travel insurance–anything can happen, and a fast-paced road trip is definitely a case of better safe than sorry.

We use and recommend  Safety Wing  for trips to Jordan.

Travel Adaptors for Jordan — Unfortunately, Jordan uses several different kinds of plugs (we saw at least 3 kinds during our trip).

To cover most of your bases, you’ll definitely want both European-style adaptors and UK-style adaptors with you.

Many hotels will also supply adaptors in Jordan, as the situation is confusing, but not all do!

Pacsafe  — We can’t recommend our Pacsafe enough!

This travel safe is affordable, sturdy, easy to pack, and will help keep your valuables safe in your hotel room (not that you should need to worry much about theft in Jordan, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!).

Hands-Free Phone Mount  — This is especially important if you don’t have a reliable co-pilot: the last thing you want to do is be fumbling with the GPS on your phone during your road trip in Andalucia.

Pack a cell phone holder to attach to the car and you’ll be able to drive much more safely!

Jordan Pass — I already mentioned this above, but it bears repeating!

With this itinerary for Jordan, you will absolutely benefit from pre-purchasing a Jordan Pass.

Additional Car Insurance  — Whether you purchase a policy that covers car rental (only some do, so double-check!), purchase a policy through the rental car company, or something else, be sure you have coverage: it’s worth the peace of mind.

Portable USB Charger — Don’t stress about your phone dying when sightseeing or camping!

Our USB charger was a lifesaver during our night camping in Wadi Rum, as the plugs at our camp weren’t compatible with our devices.

Camera  — We absolutely adore our  Sony a7R III , but whatever camera you’re comfortable with works.

Just make sure you have something with you to preserve your memories!

My husband and I are planning to visit Jordan for 7 nights early March 2024. Our preferred stay would be 2 nights in Amman on arrival. 2 nights Petra / 1 night Dead Sea / 1 night Wadi Rum / Last night in Amman again. Would be grateful if you could please suggest an iterinary – not necessary the same sequence mentioned above (except Amman).

Essentially with those stops, you’ll either want to make your way south slowly and then have your “long” driving day (not that the drive is too long in Jordan!) at the end of your trip, or vice versa–take the longest drive at the beginning of your trip and then slowly work your way back north.

With the first option, you’d want to go Amman – Dead Sea – Petra – Wadi Rum – Amman, the second option would be to reverse it: Amman – Wadi Rum – Petra – Dead Sea – Amman.

Personally, since you’re spending a couple nights in Amman to start, I’d tend to recommend the second option. That way, you’ll be doing the most active traveling earlier in your trip, and end with a final relaxing stop at the Dead Sea. 🙂

Our flight arrive at Amman airport is late at night about 10pm, and departure time is early about 10am. Do you know if any car rental company would still be open for car pickup late at night , and car drop off early in the morning? Thanks

Not offhand, but I’d check the locations at the airport–they’ll likely have the most extended hours. Alternatively, if you’re spending the night in Amman, you could take a taxi into the city for your first night and then pickup a rental car at an in-town location the next morning (just make sure to confirm you want to drop off at the airport when you leave).
