Police: Suspect in Irondequoit homicide shot himself at Letchworth State Park

An Irondequoit family lost two members in a murder-suicide that began early Thursday morning at 500 Pinegrove Ave. and ended early this afternoon on a hiking trail in Letchworth State Park 50 miles away.

At 5:38 a.m., the Irondequoit Police Department responded to the home for the report of a hysterical person saying, “there was blood everywhere,” Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters said at an early evening news conference.

Once there, officers found Joseph Deponceau, 80, inside the front door.

“He was obviously deceased and appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the upper torso,” Peters said.

Deponceau’s girlfriend is the person who called 911 and was not hurt.

She told police what happened and identified the suspect as Deponceau’s grandson Andrew Vahey, 24, of 522 Pinegrove Ave.

Her account was backed up by home security video.

Officers surrounded 522 Pinegrove and around 7:20 a.m. were able to contact the only person inside, Vahey’s roommate. He told police he had gotten texts from Vahey saying he had just killed his grandfather and was going to kill himself.

Having identified Vahey’s car, Irondequoit Police issued a “be on the lookout” alert, and New York State Park Police located the vehicle in Letchworth park.

A number of other law enforcement agencies then converged on the park, and around 12:30 p.m. spotted Vahey on Trail 18, armed with what appeared to be a long gun, Peters said.

Officers tried to contact him, but he immediately used the gun to shoot himself, Peters said. Attempts to save his life were unsuccessful.

Peters said that recently Deponceau and Vahey had been arguing over property, and officers responded last week to a family trouble call resulting from an argument about parking on the grass.

“That was it. We never had any issues before,” Peters said.

He said police don’t know why Vahey went to Letchworth. He has no known connections to the area.

In addition to emphasizing what a rare occurrence the incident was for Irondequoit, Peters said: “I just want everybody to know that … people in that family lost a grandfather and also lost a grandson. To add to the tragedy of what normally doesn’t happen in Irondequoit, realize that there’s a family that’s extremely hurting today.”

The park, which was closed during the incident, has since reopened.

Irondequoit Soccer Club provides opportunity for school-age children from ALL of Irondequoit and surrounding communities to learn the game of soccer and participate in organized league play. The club is a member of NYSWYSA (New York State West Youth Soccer Association) and has served the community for 50 years.

ISC's Recreational Soccer League:    T he Rec season runs from the beginning of May to the end of July. There are different divisions based on age; U7 & U9 teams are co-ed; U10, U13, U16 and U19 teams are separated for boys and girls. U7 & U9 teams plays in Intratown format, playing against other ISC teams on Irondequoit fields. U16 and U19 teams play in MURSL (Monroe United Recreational Soccer League), playing against Rec teams from other area towns. Whether U10 & U12 divisions play Intratown or in MURSL depends on the number of players registered; if 4 or more teams can be built, the teams play Intratown, whereas if 1-3 teams are built, the teams play in MURSL.

ISC's Travel League : The Travel league consists of U09 to U19 teams that play competitively in RDYSL (Rochester District Youth Soccer League). Travel tryouts are generally held at the end of July or beginning of August. Training for the travel league starts the first Saturday in November. Indoor training is at The Irondequoit Sports Center on E. Ridge Road from November to April. Teams move outside in May, with league games starting the end of May. The season ends in middle to late July.

ISC's Developmental Academy : The Developmental Academy program is focused on advancing the technical skills of our players. The  Developmental Academy's focus is on skill development and is appropriate for ages 4-13. Session times are divided by age ranges dependent on anticipated enrollment. There are no teams, no formal games and no referees. Each session will consist of drills developed by ISC's Technical Director, Bob Wagner. Our goal is for ISC players to further develop their soccer skills, while having fun with their friends. The Developmental Academy program meets seasonally in the Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer. Dates, times and registration information for upcoming sessions are posted on the ISC website and Facebook page and emailed to all members with an account. 

Irondequoit Soccer Club is a volunteer organization. We seek the community and parent's assistance to provide the necessary support and personnel to provide the best possible soccer experience for our youth.  ISC offers training for coaches including coaching clinics and reimbursement for coach licensing. ISC coaches are Risk Management Certified, which is a NYSWYSA background check.  We are seeking motivated adults with a passion for the game and a willingness to share both experience and knowledge with our youth.

New ALDI set to open in Irondequoit

A new ALDI store opens Thursday, June 27, at 1733 E. Ridge Road in Irondequoit.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony starts at 8:45 a.m., and the store will open to shoppers about a half-hour later.

Regular store hours will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Grand opening festivities will include contests, including for a $500 ALDI gift card, and the first 100 customers will get ALDI shopping bags filled with store products.

The no-frills supermarket chain, which charges a 25-cent deposit to use a cart, already operates an Irondequoit store at 2194 Hudson Ave. near Titus Avenue.

At 21,000 square feet, the East Ridge Road location is roughly 4,000 square feet larger than the one on Hudson Avenue and has a more modern look.

Plans presented to the town of Irondequoit in May 2023 for the East Ridge Road store also called for construction of an adjacent 3,000-square-foot quick service restaurant. There has been no update on that project.

Founded in 1946 in Germany and headquartered in Illinois, the chain is in the midst of a massive U.S. expansion. In recent years, the company has seen a surge in business as consumers continue to economize.
