The 10 Best International Airlines in 2022

The best international airlines, according to Travel + Leisure readers, offer impeccable service — both on the ground and in-flight — and ultra-comfortable cabins.

inter travel flights

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out  the 2023 list of our favorite international airlines .

As travelers returned to the skies in 2021, they relied on airlines to get them to their destinations not just safely, but in style. Whether you're flying halfway around the world or on a (relatively) short transatlantic hop, comfort, good food, and kind service are of the utmost importance. And that's exactly what Travel + Leisure readers considered when rating the best international airlines.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. In the airlines category, readers rated carriers on cabin comfort, in-flight service, food, customer service, and value.

Edging their way back on after being knocked out of the 2021 top 10 are No. 9 ANA and No. 10 Cathay Pacific Airways, two Asian heavyweights that were each praised for exceptional onboard service.

One of the newer airlines to make our readers' rankings is No. 6 La Compagnie, an all-business-class airline that launched in 2014 and currently connects New York with Paris, the Côte d'Azur, and Milan; it's been voted a World's Best International Airline since 2019.

The rest of the list is primarily filled by old reliables. No 2. Qatar Airways is, as always, celebrated for its business-class Qsuite, the first closed-door suite to enter service on any airline. "A 15-hour flight passes in what seems like moments," one voter said. Korean Air (No. 5) is also lauded for making time pass quickly and easily: "They made the longest flights I've ever taken comfortable and pleasant experiences," another said.

And, of course, the best international airline in the world — for more than a quarter-century — is none other than Singapore Airlines. Read on to find out why Singapore Airlines is so beloved by travelers and to discover the four other international airlines voted the World's Best by T+L readers.

1. Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines has been at the top of this list an incredible 27 times — every year of the awards' existence — and it scored even higher this year than last. Passengers are enthusiastic about every single aspect of the onboard experience: "Everything is as close to perfect as possible. Outstanding food, service, comfort," one voter said. And that's exactly what travelers want to hear before they board the longest flight in the world , a 19-hour haul from Singapore to New York. The luxury carrier had a big year, debuting six brand-new first-class suites on the A380s servicing the U.S. and unveiling new flagship lounges at Changi Airport following a $36 million renovation. It's perhaps unsurprising that another voter called Singapore Airlines "the standard against which all other airlines are measured."

The desire to get a good deal unites practically all travelers. Whether you're looking for a cheap getaway or a luxury vacation, no one wants to spend more than necessary. When it comes to booking flights, travelers may naturally head to an airline's website. However, that's not always the best site to book flights.

Whether it's taking advantage of credit card perks, earning bonus miles or saving money, the best flight booking site can vary depending on your situation and willingness to get creative. Let's take a look at six of the best sites to book flights and when each is the best option.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

The best flight booking sites

1. google flights.

For ease, speed and features, Google Flights is arguably the best website for flight searches. Search results appear almost instantly. Filters let you narrow down to nonstop options, select a subset of airlines, limit by price or factor in the price of a bag. Similarly, you can use Google Flights filters to avoid certain airlines, multi-stop itineraries, long layovers, early flights or pretty much whatever you might want to avoid.

You can easily check flexible dates, and if you're flexible on where you go you can use the Explore map to see prices for a variety of destinations for certain dates, a certain month or anytime in the next six months.

inter travel flights

Google Flights partners with hundreds of airlines and online travel agencies (OTAs) to pull current flight prices. That way you don't have to search each of these sites to be able to see the options. Once you select your preferred trip, Google Flights links you to the top booking options for actually booking your flight — including the airline itself and the best OTA booking options.

inter travel flights

The downsides of Google Flights are few. One is the lack of Southwest flight prices. Although Southwest flight schedules will show in flight search results, Southwest flight prices aren't available. That's because Southwest chooses to publish flight prices only on its website.

» Learn more: Why Southwest is not on Google Flights

Another downside is that Google Flights doesn't always show the cheapest prices — particularly for international flights. That means it's worth double-checking prices on another site before booking through Google Flights.

Like Google Flights, Kayak searches hundreds of other websites and flight booking platforms to find the best deal. Kayak generally doesn't let you book flights directly. However, one benefit of Kayak is the streamlined process. Rather than having to click through several pages to confirm your selection, clicking "view deal" on the results page can take you right to the cheapest booking option.

inter travel flights

Also, some travelers may find Kayak's flexible date search a bit easier to work with as you can see results from several days in the search results — eliminating the need to check each day's results separately.

inter travel flights

But perhaps the most important reason to use Kayak instead of Google Flights is that it can catch better deals. For example, we found a $550 round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Barcelona using Google Flights. Kayak found a way to lower that price to just $472 round-trip — at least once you scroll past an advertisement.

inter travel flights

Note that Kayak manages other flight search sites — including Momondo and Cheapflights — so the results may be very similar between these sister sites.

So far, we've focused on ease in flight searching, and that's going to be enough for many travelers. However, now let's add in some additional elements to consider when choosing the best flight booking site: earning rewards and saving by booking packages. Expedia excels at both of these.

Through the new One Key rewards program , travelers can earn 0.2% in OneKeyCash from flight bookings made through Expedia. That's not much, but it can stack on top of the awards you earn from the airline and those that you earn on your credit card purchase.

Even better, you'll earn credits toward One Key elite status by booking your flight through Expedia. As you climb up the tiers, you'll unlock up to 20% savings on hotels, get hotel upgrades, priority support and even price drop protection.

Plus, Expedia boasts that travelers can "save up to 30%" when bundling a hotel with a flight booking — although actual discounts are likely to vary.

4. Capital One Travel

For many Capital One cardholders, Capital One Travel might just be the best flight booking site. Part of this is to take advantage of cardholder benefits.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

For example, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card holders earn 5x Capital One miles when booking flights through the Capital One Travel portal. Plus, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card holders get up to $300 off travel booked through the Capital One Travel portal each cardholder year.

» Learn more: How to maximize the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Also, Capital One Travel can help you truly get the best price for your flight. Capital One partnered with travel data company Hopper to show suggestions about when it's the best time to book.

inter travel flights

Capital One backs up these recommendations with money. If you book a flight through Capital One Travel when Hopper recommends doing so, you'll get up to a $50 credit toward future travel if the price drops within the next 10 days.

Would you be willing to book a trip as two separate tickets in order to save money? That's the idea behind Kiwi. Instead of simply searching flights from your home airport to your destination, Kiwi checks all potential options to get between A and B. That could mean taking a bus or train from your home city to another to catch a flight to your destination. Or, Kiwi might pair a low-cost domestic flight with a cheap international flight from another city to lower your total cost.

Protect your upfront travel expenses by booking with a card that has travel insurance or by purchasing a separate policy .

For example, when we priced out a round-trip flight from Phoenix to Tokyo, the cheapest option when booked as one ticket cost $1,353 round-trip — and that's with an overnight stay in Vancouver.

inter travel flights

Pricing out the same itinerary and dates through Kiwi drops the price to just $789 round-trip. The secret? Booking this as two round-trip flights: One from Phoenix to Los Angeles on Frontier and a separate round-trip from Los Angeles to Tokyo on Zipair.

inter travel flights

Keep in mind that there are risks with booking separate tickets to get where you want to go. If a delay or cancellation causes you to miss your connection, the second airline/bus/train company isn't obligated to honor your ticket and rebook you on the next option. So make sure to factor in all of the risks of booking travel like this.

6. BookWithMatrix

ITA Matrix is a very powerful and ultra-customizable search platform for finding exactly the flight itinerary you want — whether that's booking a longer layover, avoiding certain aircraft types or booking nerdy trips such as the Alaska Milk Run .

The catch: Travelers can't actually book flights through ITA Matrix. And, unlike Google Flights, ITA Matrix doesn't even link to the best flight booking site for that itinerary. Instead, travelers are left to attempt to re-create the same itinerary through another flight booking website — which can be hard in the case of certain complex itineraries.

inter travel flights

Enter BookWithMatrix. Travelers can copy-paste their perfect itinerary from ITA Matrix into BookWithMatrix to get bookable links through the airline or select OTAs.

inter travel flights

Alternatively, travelers have the option to install the PowerTools extension in Google Chrome .

inter travel flights

This extension adds booking links right on the ITA Matrix itinerary page, avoiding the need to browse to another page.

Final thoughts on the best flight booking site

There's not a one-size-fits-all best website for booking flights. Instead, the best flight booking site for you is going to depend on how simple you want the process to be, whether you're willing to get creative with your booking, and even which credit cards you have.

For most travelers, the simplicity of Google Flights is going to make it the best one-stop shop for searching and booking flights. However, it's worth considering other options if you're flying internationally, want to book a flight-and-hotel package or have a Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

12 Tips to Prepare for an International Trip

Tips for take-off to landing

Going on an international trip soon? The rules for international flights have many dos and don't's. Here are 12 tips gleaned from experienced globe trotters designed to make that long-haul flight easier.

Pack Lightly

On one of my first international business trips as an adult, I overpacked drastically. Guess who had to carry a large heavy suitcase, a large purse, and a garment bag around Paris at Metro and train stations that didn’t have elevators or escalators? After that, I swore to only pack what I could comfortably carry by myself. Check out my packing tips here.

Choose an Aisle Seat

On long flights, it’s recommended that you get up and walk to stretch your muscles and avoid blood clots in your legs. This is much easier to do in an aisle seat, so book one as soon as you book your ticket.

There's an App for That!

Apps can be a savior when traveling, but especially when you're abroad. You can use travel apps them to keep in touch with your airline, translate different languages, search for services at airports, choose your seats and myriad other tasks.

Dress Accordingly

On a long flight, you want to look well-dressed, but you also want to be comfortable. so you don’t want to wear clothes that cut or bind. I wear a wrinkle-proof jacket that can double as a blanket or a pillow, and I always wear a long pashmina for the same reason. The pashmina can also be used as a wrap, a pillow, a skirt cover and an accessory to dress up travel outfits. Buy my favorite for $10 at the Bijoux Terner website. I also wear slip-on flat shoes that are easy to take on and off at security and on your flight. All of this isbeautifully illustrated here at the Chelsea Tells Storiesblog.

Arrive Early

Most airlines want you at the airport at least two hours before your flight takes off, especially if you’re leaving from a U.S. international gateway airport . It will give you time to check your bags, check in, navigate the airport security checkpoint and get to your gate in plenty of time and arrive stress-free.

Zip Through Customs

Those who travel internationally know that U.S. Customs and Immigration lines can be a nightmare, especially at peak arrival times at the major international U.S. airports. Smart travelers carry the  Global Entry  card, which speeds you right past the Immigration and Customs lines. And a bonus -- it also works for the domestic Transportation Security Administration's PreCheck program .

Lounge Around

Because you need to be at the airport so far in advance, consider paying for access to an airline-branded or airport lounge. There are plenty of lounges that allow you to pay a fee for entry. It's good to have time away from the masses before boarding your flight.

Drink Water

It’s OK to have a glass of wine or two while on your flight, but you really need to stay hydrated, because aircraft cabins are extremely dry. And instead of bothering flight attendants for endless little cups of water, go to your local dollar store, buy a water bottle and ask them to fill that up.

Cone of Silence

Nothing is worse than being on a plane with a screaming child or a chatty Cathy seatmate. That’s why I never travel without either a pair of  noise canceling headphones or my Beats Flex By Dr. Dre earbuds. Pop on either of them and enjoy the silence.

Sleepy Time

When it’s time to rest, you want to be comfortable. So invest in an inflatable neck pillow (I know they look silly, but they are a great sleep enhancer), an eye mask and comfortable socks.

Charge Me Up

More airlines are installing power ports on their aircraft, but you can’t always depend on that. When I flew to Paris for Christmas, the flight over had a USB port, but the flight home didn’t. That’s why I always carry mytrusty Mophie Juice Pack Powerstation Duo, which allows me to charge my iPhone and iPad quickly.

Show The Love

The flight attendants are there for your safety. But they also work hard to ensure that our flight is comfortable and stress-free. Show your appreciation by presenting them with a box of sealed chocolates, like Ghiradelli Chocolate Squares or Ferrero Rocher truffles. And although you're not expecting it, they may show the love back to you in return.

Frequently asked questions

  • What you pack in your cabin baggage can make the difference between a comfortable flight, and a restless one. Start with the must-haves, such as your passport (or a valid ID) and your travel documents. Once they’re safely packed, throw in any medications you might need. Next? Consider your comfort factor. Earplugs, a neck pillow and a good book will help the time fly by while you’re cruising at altitude.
  • It also pays to check with your airline regarding what you can’t bring on board your flight. Box cutters, utility knives, razor blades and swords are among the prohibited items. Anything sharp, flammable or explosive is generally not allowed in your carry-on baggage. Be sure to pack any sports equipment like ski poles or baseball bats in your checked luggage.
  • Go for comfort rather than fashion when flying. Layer up and wear natural materials as they allow air and moisture to pass through and keep you cool. Cabin temperatures can get cold on long-haul flights, so pack a hoodie or similar and always wear sneakers or flat, closed-toe shoes.
  • Consider wearing compression tights or socks to help prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This condition is a result of blood clotting that can be caused by prolonged periods of sitting, especially on long-distance flights. Doing foot and leg stretches in your seat or walking around the cabin will help improve your circulation.

SFO jet bridge collapses on plane during deplaning process

inter travel flights

A jet bridge at San Francisco International Airport is under investigation after it collapsed onto a Hawaiian Airlines plane in the middle of passengers disembarking Thursday evening, the airport said.

Hawaiian Airlines flight 42 departed from Kahului in Maui and arrived on time at SFO’s International Terminal A, according to FlightAware . The aircraft arrived without any issues, and the jet bridge began its usual process of positioning itself towards the plane.

Shortly after the jet bridge was positioned, it experienced “a structural failure” with a metal strut and suddenly collapsed onto the plane, according to SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel.

About half of the 179 passengers had deplaned when the incident occurred, Hawaiian Airlines spokesperson Alex Da Silva told USA TODAY. The remaining guests and six crew members used the rear exit door and steps to disembark.

“All of our guests were able to safely deplane, but our aircraft sustained some damage,” said Hawaiian Airlines spokesperson Alex Da Silva. The aircraft is being repaired before returning to service.

Bonnie Hayes, a former American Airlines gate agent who operated jet bridges for 33 years and now serves as an expert witness for related lawsuits, told USA TODAY she has “never (seen) the cab of the jet bridge collapse.”

Hayes said it’s typically the airport's responsibility to perform routine maintenance checks of jet bridges, which commonly occur weekly or even daily. “There’s so many checks that are done on these,” she said.

“Underneath, it must’ve been stressed,” she said.

The passenger boarding bridge remains out of service for investigations and repairs, SFO said.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — After years of delays and stumbles, Boeing is finally poised to launch astronauts to the International Space Station for NASA.

It’s the first flight of Boeing’s Starliner capsule with a crew on board, a pair of NASA pilots who will check out the spacecraft during the test drive and a weeklong stay at the space station.

NASA turned to U.S. companies for astronaut rides after the space shuttles were retired. Elon Musk’s SpaceX has made nine taxi trips for NASA since 2020, while Boeing has managed only a pair of unoccupied test flights.

Boeing program manager Mark Nappi wishes Starliner was further along. “There’s no doubt about that, but we’re here now.”

The company’s long-awaited astronaut demo is slated for liftoff Monday night.

Provided this tryout goes well, NASA will alternate between Boeing and SpaceX to get astronauts to and from the space station.

A look at the newest ride and its shakedown cruise:

THE CAPSULE

White with black and blue trim, Boeing’s Starliner capsule is about 10 feet (3 meters) tall and 15 feet (4.5 meters) in diameter. It can fit up to seven people, though NASA crews typically will number four. The company settled on the name Starliner nearly a decade ago, a twist on the name of Boeing’s early Stratoliner and the current Dreamliner.

No one was aboard Boeing’s two previous Starliner test flights. The first, in 2019, was hit with software trouble so severe that its empty capsule couldn’t reach the station until the second try in 2022. Then last summer, weak parachutes and flammable tape cropped up that needed to be fixed or removed.

Veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are retired Navy captains who spent months aboard the space station years ago. They joined the test flight after the original crew bowed out as the delays piled up. Wilmore, 61, is a former combat pilot from Mount Juliet, Tennessee, and Williams, 58, is a helicopter pilot from Needham, Massachusetts. The duo have been involved in the capsule’s development and insist Starliner is ready for prime time, otherwise they would not strap in for the launch.

“We’re not putting our heads in the sand,” Williams told The Associated Press. “Sure, Boeing has had its problems. But we are the QA (quality assurance). Our eyes are on the spacecraft.”

THE TEST FLIGHT

Starliner will blast off on United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. It will be the first time astronauts ride an Atlas since NASA’s Project Mercury, starting with John Glenn when he became the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962. Sixty-two years later, this will be the 100th launch of the Atlas V, which is used to hoist satellites as well as spacecraft.

“We’re super careful with every mission. We’re super, duper, duper careful” with human missions, said Tory Bruno, CEO of ULA, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Starliner should reach the space station in roughly 26 hours. The seven station residents will have their eyes peeled on the approaching capsule. The arrival of a new vehicle is “a really big deal. You leave nothing to chance,” NASA astronaut Michael Barratt told the AP from orbit. Starliner will remain docked for eight days, undergoing checkouts before landing in New Mexico or elsewhere in the American West.

STARLINER VS. DRAGON

Both companies’ capsules are designed to be autonomous and reusable. This Starliner is the same one that made the first test flight in 2019. Unlike the SpaceX Dragons, Starliner has traditional hand controls and switches alongside touchscreens and, according to the astronauts, is more like NASA’s Orion capsules for moon missions. Wilmore and Williams briefly will take manual control to wring out the systems on their way to the space station.

NASA gave Boeing, a longtime space contractor, more than $4 billion to develop the capsule, while SpaceX got $2.6 billion. SpaceX already was in the station delivery business and merely refashioned its cargo capsule for crew. While SpaceX uses the boss’ Teslas to get astronauts to the launch pad, Boeing will use a more traditional “astrovan” equipped with a video screen that Wilmore said will be playing “Top Gun: Maverick.”

One big difference at flight’s end: Starliner lands on the ground with cushioning airbags, while Dragon splashes into the sea.

Boeing is committed to six Starliner trips for NASA after this one, which will take the company to the station’s planned end in 2030. Boeing’s Nappi is reluctant to discuss other potential customers until this inaugural crew flight is over. But the company has said a fifth seat will be available to private clients. SpaceX periodically sells seats to tycoons and even countries eager to get their citizens to the station for a couple weeks.

Coming soon: Sierra Space’s mini shuttle, Dream Chaser, which will deliver cargo to the station later this year or next, before accepting passengers.

Rostov-on-Don, Russia

  • Rostov-on-Don, Russia

Rostov-on-Don (Rostov-na-Donu) is the capital city of the Russian federal subject of Rostov Oblast. It is the biggest city in Southern Russia and the 10th most populous in the country, with a current population of 1,110,000. Owing to its strategic position on the Don River, Rostov-on-Don acts as a vital seaport and industrial juggernaut. This metropolitan also serves as a launching point for the Caucasus and an all-around beautiful place to visit.

Geography And Climate Of Rostov-on-Don

Rostov on don river

Rostov-on-Don, also referred to simply as "Rostov," is located in Southeastern Russia, just north of the Caucuses - a mountain range containing Mount Elbrus , which is Europe's highest peak (i.e., one of the " Seven Summits ''). Rostov-on-Don is also situated on the Don River, about 30 miles inland from the Sea of Azov , which itself opens into the Black Sea . Rostov is about 670 miles south of Moscow and sits in the immediate vicinity of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions of Eastern Ukraine.

This region's climate is generally temperate and experiences steady rainfall throughout the year. The average annual temperature is 51 degrees Fahrenheit, ranging from a low of 22 degrees in the coldest month of January to a high of 85 degrees in the hottest month of July. The average relative humidity is 73%.

History Of Rostov-on-Don

Building of Rostov-on-Don administration

The predecessor of Rostov began in 1749 with the establishment of a Turkish customs port. The fortress of St. Dmitry of Rostov was built between 1761 and 1763, which served as the developing town's focal point. Neighboring Armenian settlement, Nakhichevan-na-Donu, later merged with this site to form the basis of modern Rostov. In 1806, the combined town was officially named Rostov-on-Don. The city grew steadily throughout the 19th century in conjunction with the surrounding North-Caucasus region.

In 1952 the Volga-Don Shipping Canal linked Rostov to the Volga basin. This project thereby connected the already important seaport to Europe's longest river and Russia's main waterway.

Today, Rostov-on-Don is a vital meeting point for road, rail, water systems, and oil and natural gas pipeline connections that serve central Russia and the Caucasus. Rostov is also close to the Donets Coal Basin, which has contributed to the city's significant industrial and engineering role for the whole of Russia.

Because of its transport and industrious capabilities, Rostov has recently played a major part in the invasion of Ukraine. Russian forces and heavy artillery gathered near the border city, which was then used as one of many launching points for the attacks on February 24, 2022.

Visiting Rostov-on-Don

Rostov on don football stadium

The Rostov-on-Don Airport was replaced by the Platov International Airport in 2017. Some international flights are available, but most international travel would likely connect through Moscow. Rostov can also be accessed by Russia's extensive train system or by car or bus. Prospective international travelers will want to be sure to allow adequate time for obtaining a tourist visa. This formal undertaking can be much more time-intensive and expensive compared to many other nations around the world.

cathedral in rostov on don

While the current situation makes travel ill-advised, Rostov does offer a variety of appealing aspects for general tourism. For starters, there is a wealth of striking architecture, both in terms of religious structures and government buildings. A thorough tour will also unveil a variety of niche museums and a bounty of beautiful parks scattered throughout the city. Sports fans and fitness buffs will want to take stock of the gigantic athletic facilities that Rostov offers. And finally, no trip would be complete without a survey of the Don River. The Voroshilovsky bridge offers a panoramic view of the city and a snapshot of the seaport activity.

Current Events And The Invasion of Ukraine

Early in the morning of February 24, 2022, Russia's military invaded Ukraine , launching assaults by land, sea, air, and with disruptive cyber attacks. Rostov-on-Don served as a vital launchpad for this campaign. The widespread attacks were unprovoked and triggered immediate, harsh sanctions against Russia by the United States and other G7 nations . Russian President, Vladimir Putin, claimed that the intention was the "...demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine." Ukraine declared a state of emergency, and President Volodymyr Zelensky asked for all citizens willing to defend the country to step forward.

History of Rostov-on-Don

Foundation of rostov-on-don.

Long before the foundation of Rostov-on-Don, the first Russian emperor Peter I wanted to build a fortress on the site of the present city to protect the southern borders of the Russian Empire from the raids of the Ottomans and Crimean Tatars. But because of the Treaty of the Pruth, which ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1710-1711, it became impossible as the treaty was a political victory for the Ottoman Empire.

By the decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna dated December 15, 1749, the Temernitskaya customs house was founded here, at the mouth of the Temernik River, on the right bank of the Don River in its lower reaches, about 46 kilometers from the mouth of the river, where it flows into the Sea of Azov. In the spring of 1750, a pier, a warehouse, a quarantine, and a garrison barracks were built at the customs.

In 1756, the international “Russian and Constantinople Trading Company” was opened here. Temernitsky port became the only Russian port in the south of the Russian Empire through which trade with the countries of the Black, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas was carried out.

In 1760-1761, the construction of the fortress began to protect the lower reaches of the Don. The garrison of the fortress numbered more than four thousand people. The fortress was originally named after Metropolitan Demetrius of Rostov and Yaroslavl (1652-1709) canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.

More Historical Facts…

Over time, houses for merchants and clergymen, shops, taverns, a prison, and other buildings were built here. The port of Rostov quickly became known in Russia and abroad, attracting more and more Russian and foreign merchants. Foreign goods went from here to the depths of Russia: to Moscow, Smolensk, Kazan, Orenburg, Vyatka, and to numerous fairs.

The fortress had a large garrison, was armed with 238 guns and for half a century was used as a rear base for the Russian troops. The fortress of St. Demetrius of Rostov played a significant role during the Russian-Turkish wars of the second half of the 18th century. During the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774, it served as a base for the offensive against Azov.

Rostov-on-Don in the late 18th - 19th centuries

By the end of the 18th century, because of the annexation of the territory of the Crimean Khanate to Russia, the fortress lost its strategic importance, the fortifications were dismantled. In 1779, Catherine II allowed the Crimean Armenians to settle here. They founded the settlement of Nor-Nakhichevan to the east of the fortress. Today, it is the Proletarsky District of Rostov-on-Don.

The name of the fortress and the settlement subsequently changed: the fortress of St. Demetrius, the fortress of Demetrius of Rostov, the Rostov fortress, just Rostov, and finally, to distinguish it from the old Russian town of Rostov the Great located near Yaroslavl, Rostov-on-Don.

In 1811, Rostov received its coat of arms, which depicted a fortress tower, symbolizing the town’s past. After eliminating the danger from the Ottoman Empire and the development of the southern trade routes, Rostov-on-Don found itself in the center of the country’s foreign trade. In 1836, a new Rostov customs house was built, and in 10 years the trade turnover of the Rostov port increased by about 30 times.

By the middle of the 19th century, it became one of the largest export points for grain and iron in the Russian Empire. The rapid growth in freight traffic caused a strong impetus to the development of river shipping and shipbuilding. Rostov was famous for two fairs, some of the biggest in the country. Rostov also had the largest fish market in Russia.

In 1875, with the construction of the Rostov-Vladikavkaz railway, the opening of the first drawbridge over the Don and the first large railway station, Rostov-on-Don turned into one of Russia’s largest railway junctions. In 1887, it was included in the Don Cossack Host Oblast (an administrative-territorial unit populated mostly by Don Cossacks and governed under special conditions), which was the impetus for the further development of industry.

According to the 1897 census, 119,476 people lived in Rostov-on-Don. The following native languages were mentioned: Russian - 94,673, Jewish - 11,183, Ukrainian - 5,612, Polish - 1,444, Armenian - 1,182, German - 1,182, Tatar - 1,172.

Rostov-on-Don in the 20th century and beyond

During the Russian Civil War of 1918-1920, Rostov-on-Don played a prominent role as one of the centers of the anti-Bolshevik White movement. The Soviet period in the history of Rostov-on-Don began on February 11, 1920. In the late 1920s, active construction began in Rostov-on-Don. In 1926, the plant “Rostselmash”, a giant of the Soviet agricultural machine building, was founded.

On November 29, 1935, the country’s largest drama theater with an auditorium for 2,200 seats was opened in the city. The theater building was designed in the shape of a giant tractor. On September 13, 1937, Azov-Black Sea Krai was divided into Krasnodar Krai with the center in Krasnodar and Rostov Oblast with the center in Rostov-on-Don. In 1939, Rostov-on-Don was the 4th most populated city in Soviet Russia - 510 thousand people.

During World War II, German troops occupied Rostov-on-Don twice: in the fall of 1941 and in the summer of 1942. On November 20, 1941, the Germans entered the city for the first time. A week later, on November 28, Soviet troops recaptured the city during the Rostov offensive operation. The liberation of Rostov was the first significant victory of the Red Army in the initial period of the war.

Rostov-on-Don remained Soviet until July 1942, when, after the failure of the Red Army offensive near Kharkov, the German command launched an offensive in the Kuban and the Caucasus. On July 24, 1942, the 17th Army of the Wehrmacht entered Rostov-on-Don. On February 14, 1943, after the victory at Stalingrad, during the general retreat of the Wehrmacht in the southern sector of the Eastern Front, Rostov-on-Don was finally liberated from German troops.

The war caused great damage to Rostov-on-Don, about 12 thousand houses were destroyed. On August 9, 1945, a general plan for the restoration of the city was approved. It was included in the list of the 15 largest and oldest Russian cities to be rebuilt in the first place. By the early 1950s, it was almost completely done.

In the 1970s, the reconstruction of Rostselmash and other large enterprises of the city was carried out. As a result of mass housing construction, large residential areas Western and Northern were built. The area of the city’s housing stock more than doubled in three decades. In 1987, Rostov-on-Don became one of the cities of the USSR with a population of over one million.

After the collapse of the USSR, Rostov-on-Don became one of the largest business centers and the 10th most populous city in Russia. In 1999, its 250th anniversary was celebrated, a lot of architectural monuments were restored.

In 2000, Rostov-on-Don became the center of the Southern Federal District (about 11% of the total population of Russia). In 2008, it was awarded the honorary title “City of Military Glory”. In 2018, Rostov-on-Don hosted five matches of the FIFA World Cup.

The products of “Rostselmash” (agricultural machinery) cover more than 50% of the Russian market, “Don Tobacco” - 12%. “Rostvertol” is the only enterprise on the territory of the Russian Federation that produces helicopters for various purposes, “Yug Rusi” is known as the largest producer and exporter of sunflower oil.

This city is the largest transport hub in the Southern Federal District of Russia. Platov International Airport, commissioned in December 2017 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, is located about 40 km from Rostov-on-Don and offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Astrakhan, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Sochi, Dubai, Istanbul, and a number of other cities. Several federal and regional highways pass through Rostov-on-Don, including the M-4 “Don” highway, which runs along the outskirts of the eastern side of the city.

Too low traffic capacity of streets and lack of good transport interchanges plus a large traffic flow, especially during peak hours, are the main reasons for frequent traffic jams. Also, the problem of parking for personal vehicles is very acute, especially in the old part of the city, in the center. Cars parked near office buildings occupy a large area of the roadway, which also leads to the creation of traffic jams.

Many in Russia know the criminal nickname of this city: “Rostov - papa” meaning “Rostov - dad” (similar to the nickname of the city of Odessa in Ukraine - “Odessa - mama” meaning “Odessa - mom”). Rostov-on-Don and Odessa became the southern capitals of the criminal world during the late Russian Empire.

At the end of the 19th century - the beginning of the 20th century, a lot of criminals led a nomadic, vagrant lifestyle. Therefore, when they were detained without passports and asked about their parents, one could hear the answer: “Rostov is my dad, Odessa is my mom.” This is one of the versions of the origin of these nicknames. Today, Rostov-on-Don is not included in the list of cities with the highest crime rate in Russia.

The city has more than 800 objects of cultural heritage, including 470 architectural monuments, 55 archeological monuments, 106 monuments of monumental art and military glory. The historic center of Rostov is especially rich in monuments of architecture.

Rostov-on-Don is also one of the largest jazz centers in Russia. In the early 1980s, the country’s first “professor of jazz” Kim Nazaretov opened the department of pop-jazz music at the Rostov Conservatory.

Main Attractions of Rostov-on-Don

Bolshaya Sadovaya Street - one of the oldest and most beautiful streets in Rostov-on-Don, where a lot of city sights are located. Its length is about 4 km. The questions of our visitors

Rostov-on-Don is among top 10 most criminal cities in Russia. So from this point of view it is not a very safe city. However, if you are concerned about safety during the World Cup 2018, then during this time, special efforts will be made to ensure security, so a visit to the city will be relatively safe.

I would recommend that you still follow such simple precautions as always keep your documents, tickets, cards, cash with you because thefts are still very possible. You should also avoid walking alone in the evening/night time especially not in the central part of the city.

Innovative Airline Operations: The Turnaround

inter travel flights

As the aviation sector continues its forward momentum, the transformative technology shifts aren't limited to just the airline retail experience we highlighted in our recent Airline Tech Transition Report .

There's another core segment of the airline ecosystem that's pivotal to its efficient functioning – airline operations.

Within the complex realm of airline operations, three pivotal areas stand out, each undergoing significant innovative overhauls that are reshaping traditional operational methods:

  • Ramp Terminal Operations : Preparing the aircraft for its next journey.
  • Flight Operations : Managing the aircraft while it's in the air.
  • Post-Flight Operations : Streamlined management of luggage post-landing.

In this analysis, we'll take a closer look at the first of these critical areas – Ramp Terminal Operations – exploring its nuances and understanding its evolving role in the broader operational landscape of airlines.

Aircraft-Turnaround

RAMP TERMINAL OPERATIONS: RACING AGAINST TIME

In the aviation world, the clock is always ticking!

Each minute holds monumental value, especially when aircraft are grounded. As the famous airline saying goes: planes don't make money sitting on the ground . The essence of an efficient airline operation lies in how promptly it can prepare an aircraft for its next journey – all while maintaining the highest safety standards and ensuring top-notch service.

As the airline industry constantly evolves, so do the methods and technologies that support it. Today, the emphasis on efficient Ramp Terminal Operations isn't just about manual precision but about leveraging cutting-edge technologies to ensure seamless operations.

The intricate dance that constitutes Ramp Terminal Operations revolves around swift yet organized coordination. This process isn’t merely about restocking amenities or refueling the aircraft. It involves orchestrating a multitude of stakeholders, for example, the strategic alignment between an airline’s fleet planning, schedule planning, passenger reservations, in-flight and ground operations, and especially airplane maintenance systems. Furthermore, this coordination extends to interactions with external entities such as air traffic controllers, airport authorities, and control authorities like immigration and customs. These latter elements add significant uncontrollable factors to the process, contrasting with the aspects airlines can control. This dichotomy between controllable and uncontrollable aspects is a critical consideration in the efficiency and success of the turnaround process.

As a result of this complexity, a single turnaround typically consists of hundreds of individual tasks, involving more than 75 different people and entities .

So, what drives this push for optimizing turnaround times, especially in today's rapidly evolving aviation landscape?

Let's dive into the three pivotal reasons that are more urgent now than ever before, underscoring the importance of shaving off every possible minute from the aircraft turnaround process.

WHY MINIMIZING TURNAROUND TIMES IS PARAMOUNT

Before an aircraft embarks on its next journey, it undergoes a crucial period of preparation. First, it remains stationed at the gate, allowing passengers to disembark, cargo and baggage to be unloaded, and necessary services, including refueling, cleaning, catering, and maintenance to be performed. Following this, cargo and baggage are loaded afresh, and a new set of passengers board. The time this cycle takes, averaged over numerous trips, is what the industry denotes as 'average turn-time'.

These average turn-times are constantly under pressure to be kept as short as possible.

Let’s briefly explore why.

Aircraft-Turnaround-1

1. THE ECONOMIC IMPERATIVE OF EFFICIENT TURNAROUND

For airlines, time is money – quite literally. An airplane on the ground is usually an asset not generating revenue. Thus, the quest for minimizing average turn-time isn't merely operational but fundamentally economic.

This is especially true for low-cost airlines that rely heavily on quick turnarounds for efficient operations. However, it's important to note that for many legacy carriers, the equation can be more nuanced. For them, scheduling optimal connectivity in their hub-and-spoke systems often takes precedence. Additionally, in some cases, aircraft may need to remain on the ground for extended periods due to time differences and specific flying patterns. Thus, while efficient turnaround is universally valuable, its impact and implementation can vary significantly between different types of carriers.

In the case of budget airlines, the foremost consideration is airplane utilization. Especially for carriers championing point-to-point routes and those with shorter average trip lengths, efficient utilization is a key necessity. Such carriers typically adopt a streamlined approach: they employ a simplified fleet structure, limit airplane types, and emphasize high airplane utilization.

This lean operational model offers dual benefits:

  • Firstly, with a limited variety of airplanes, swapping out an aircraft in case of unforeseen technical glitches becomes smoother.
  • Secondly, elevated airplane utilization allows these airlines to distribute their fixed ownership expenditures across a larger number of flights, effectively diminishing costs on a per-seat-mile or per-trip basis.

Boeing's research  crystallizes the economic significance of reducing turn-times. By shaving off a mere 10 minutes from the average turn-time (reducing it from 40 to 30 minutes), airplane utilization surges by an impressive 8% for a typical point-to-point carrier.

Aircraft-Turnaround-2

While the advantages of decreased turn-times are clear, assigning an exact monetary value to such reductions is challenging. Grounding costs are influenced by a myriad of factors, from the specifics of aircraft financing and aircraft type to variables like route specifics, fuel prices, load factors, and more.

While it's challenging to pinpoint an exact financial figure, the economic rationale for minimizing turn-times remains unquestionable. As such, the push for enhancing efficiency in turnaround operations is primarily about profitability.

2. The Passenger's Perspective on Turnaround Times

While airlines grapple with the economics of turnaround times, passengers are primarily concerned with another facet: punctuality.

Punctuality is not just about the flight departing and arriving on time. For many travelers, especially those on connecting flights, punctuality is crucial for ensuring connectivity. A delay in one segment can have a ripple effect, potentially causing passengers to miss their connecting flights and disrupting carefully planned itineraries. Therefore, maintaining strict adherence to scheduled turnaround times is essential not just for economic reasons and operational efficiency but also for ensuring that passengers can reliably reach their destinations or make their connecting flights without undue stress.

According to our proprietary OAG Flight Status Data , while a delay of about six minutes in planned turnaround can often be recuperated  at some stage during a flight, anything beyond this window typically culminates in agonizing delays.

Data from our OAG analysis in March 2023  provides the regularity of this issue.

  • Alarmingly, none of the major US airlines consistently achieved their aircraft turnarounds within the projected timeframes.
  • United Airlines was the lone contender that managed to keep the variance within the six-minute gap between planned and actual turnaround times.

Aircraft-Turnaround-3

Our findings from March, while indicative, represent only a high-level view given the small sample size of 10 airports and 25 airlines. However, they do align with larger industry trends observed across various markets. According to the 2023 Turnaround Benchmark Report , the average ground delay, even among the best-performing short-haul airlines in the world (categorized as those in the top 75th percentile in terms of turnaround time), is an alarming eight minutes. This statistic highlights the significant challenges that even the most efficient airlines face in optimizing turnaround times.

What does all this mean for the average traveler?

Simply put, disruptions and discomfort.

  • Recent studies indicate that flight delays feature prominently among the top three frustrations  that air travelers complain about.
  • Frost & Sullivan estimates  that a 1% reduction in on-time performance in a given year results in a reduction of up to 0.6% of an airline’s net promoter score.

Thus, streamlined and punctual turnaround times aren't just an economic necessity – they're a core pillar of customer satisfaction. This holds true for all carriers, spanning the spectrum from short-haul point-to-point providers to long-haul legacy specialists.

3. The Green Angle of Turnaround Times

The call for sustainability is bellowing louder than ever, especially in the airline industry .

As stakeholders and passengers push for a “greener” travel experience , airlines are compelled to scrutinize every facet of their operations, from in-flight procedures to on-ground activities.

While the main engines might be silent during the turnaround, the aircraft is far from inactive. An essential player here is the aircraft's Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), typically nestled in the tail cone. Even with the main engines switched off, the APU runs, providing vital electrical and mechanical power. This includes maintaining air conditioning, powering essential cockpit systems, and eventually aiding in restarting the main engines.

While the APU serves a pivotal role, it’s not without its environmental footprint. Every minute of delay in turnaround times adds to the APU's operational duration. While the emissions might seem minor in isolation, they accumulate rapidly.

  • Reducing each flight's turnaround time by just a single minute, thus cutting APU runtime, can lead to a CO2 reduction of over 3 kg  – a seemingly modest amount.
  • But when projected across the anticipated 32 million flights in 2023 , this translates to a staggering industry-wide savings of over 172 million  kg of CO2.

Aircraft-Turnaround-4

Recent research supports this savings potential:

  • The Turnaround Report  finds out that among the 25% least efficient airlines in terms of turnaround management, an average of 16 minutes of additional APU operation equates to a burn of approximately 27kg of extra fuel, translating to over 85kg of additional CO2 emissions.
  • This Transport and Environment Study  illuminates that accurate departure time forecasts would significantly trim down unnecessary APU emissions, reinforcing the importance of a tight turnaround schedule.

Notably, this carbon footprint could be effortlessly sidestepped if turnaround times adhered closely to the plan – no revolutionary electric or hydrogen-based jet engine needed.

So while many view sustainability through the lens of in-flight practices only, the significance of ground operations cannot be ignored. After all, every saved minute on the ground is a stride toward a greener tomorrow.

THE TECH BEHIND PERFECTING TURNAROUND TIMES

To appreciate the transformative potential of faster turnaround times, it's vital to evaluate how these improvements can be realized consistently and safely. The fusion of innovation and technology is the keystone to this advancement. This journey of innovation unfolds in three distinct phases:

Aircraft-Turnaround-5

1. MANUAL OPTIMIZATION

At its core, this is about refining and rigorously standardizing turnaround processes. A consistent and clearly defined approach to turnaround processes like cleaning, cargo handling, and passenger boarding can significantly smooth operations. The more these processes are repeated, the more streamlined they become. This is when little windows of opportunity for improvement show up.

One compelling example showcases Delta Airlines' awareness: it tweaked the angle  at which aircraft are pushed away from the gate. A shift from 90 degrees to 45 degrees saved the company just a minute or two each time, but these small increments, over time, prove monumental, as we learned above.

There are many other straightforward ideas  to augment this efficiency further. While these manual optimizations are invaluable, they offer only limited upside potential. For more transformative shifts, technology-led innovation is imperative.

2. Smart Visibility

This second phase is anchored in leveraging today’s technology to keep a vigilant eye on ongoing processes and to enhance planning. A notable example is AeroCloud , which boosts its Airport Management Systems by combining flight data from multiple sources. This ensures a real-time, up-to-date single source of truth around flight activities, facilitating better planning for upcoming turnarounds.

Employing computer vision allows for real-time operational monitoring, flagging any deviations from optimal performance. Springshot is such a case in point. Developed in 2011, Springshot is an operations platform that provides aviation managers and planners with a unified control panel for smooth daily operations. By integrating our OAG data , Springshot equips airports and airlines with tools for accurate and balanced resource distribution. Its systems, fueled by automation, integrations, and AI, help save millions of dollars by preventing delays.

Assaia , a travel-tech startup from Switzerland, is another powerful example. The company’s partnership with airports, like the one in Halifax, Canada, employs a synergy of Artificial Intelligence and computer vision. Its solution can, for example, assist in efficient de-icing processes , a frequent cause of delays. By integrating data from the gates, the de-icing pad, and other essential inputs, the technology facilitates better coordination, minimizing blockages. Assaia's tech suite, with its real-time alerts and event detection capabilities, claims over 12% turnaround time improvements .

Other tech giants, including IBM , have also channeled their expertise into the turnaround domain, creating unified platforms to enhance collaboration and streamline operations. An array of tech solutions, from emerging startups like Aerogility  and EXSYN  to long-time tech pioneers like Honeywell  and IBS Software , are also making waves in this space. Not to mention airline-owned solutions such as those from Lufthansa Systems .

What all these examples have in common is that they lie at the intersection of data, people, and technology, making sense of the data and connecting the right people.

3. The AI-Driven Future

The journey of innovation in airline operations is steadily integrating AI technologies, not only for monitoring and detecting but also for proactive adjustments that enhance operational efficiency.

A prime example of this unfolding AI future is the “ Deep Turnaround ” system at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). This AI-driven solution, equipped with cameras, tracks over 70 steps in the aircraft turnaround process to predict its duration and estimate when a plane is ready to push back from the gate. Although still in its early stages, “Deep Turnaround” has already shown positive results  and is not limited to Schiphol. Recently, it was revealed that this system is also being tested at other airports, including Eindhoven Airport .

With this in mind, imagine the expansive potential of such technology. For instance, an AI system could use real-time weather updates to foresee delays and automatically redirect fuel or cargo handling to another aircraft due for an imminent departure. This proactive adaptation ensures no time is wasted, resources are optimally utilized, and the integrity of the flight schedule is maintained. These advancements signal a future where AI not only tracks and reports but dynamically orchestrates operational decisions, leading to more efficient, timely, and sustainable airline operations.

This future vision underscores a seamless, automated ecosystem where every piece of data is not just collected but also actioned upon in real-time, ensuring optimal turnaround efficiency.

In wrapping up, it's clear that the most effective solutions for airlines emerge from the synergy of innovation, data, and technology. These elements serve as invaluable aids to dispatchers and movement controllers, offering enhanced visibility and informed decision-making. However, it's important to recognize that while these advancements significantly assist operational processes, they are not replacements for human insight. Commercial considerations and other critical factors still require human oversight and intervention. As the airline industry continues to evolve, the adept management of turnaround times, augmented by these technological aids, will play a crucial role in determining its future course and success.

Video shows fight that broke out on Spirit Airlines flight as it landed at Logan Airport

Passengers on that flight said they could hear a tense verbal exchange during the flight, but were unprepared for what happened when it landed, by eli rosenberg • published may 9, 2024 • updated on may 10, 2024 at 12:02 pm.

It was a tussle on the tarmac as a fight broke out on a recent Spirit Airlines flight right after it landed at Logan Airport.

"Everything seemed fine and dandy until we hit the ground," said Framingham resident Nicole Grome, who recorded video of the fight on her cell phone. "The tension was really building, you could cut it with a knife, the tension was so thick."

Grome, and her mother Laura Grome, say the fight started shortly after their May 7 Spirit flight landed from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They add that during the flight they could hear a tense verbal exchange but nothing could prepare them for what happened next.

"They were choking each other out, it was kinda a really crazy sight to see, it was like straight out of a movie," Grome said.

The Grome family had been in Myrtle Beach for several days as they helped Nicole change college dorm rooms, and they were flying home, tired after a day of moving. They credit a Spirit flight attendant who got in between the two men to try and break up the fight.

"They are trained to try and de-escalate things as much as possible," said Mark Weinkrantz, a retired commercial and military pilot.

"People travel, they surrender a lot of their space, they surrender their comfort and other people are in charge and it makes things uncomfortable," he added. "It is the perfect environment for a small incident between two people to erupt into a much bigger confrontation."

Laura Grome agrees, wondering aloud whatever happened to good manners.

"Where is the decorum, you know? You are supposed to fly, and be respectful, in a closed environment, there are certain places where you are respectful, a library is one of them, an airplane!" she said.

Spirit Airlines issued a statement on the situation:

"Law enforcement was requested due to a disturbance that occurred as Spirit Airlines flight 3907 (MYR-BOS) was deplaning in Boston (BOS) on May 7," Spirit said in a statement. "We do not tolerate disruptive behavior of any kind, and the passengers involved are no longer welcome on any of our flights."
