Visit A City – An absolutely free itinerary planner that is packed with awesome features?!?! *Disbelief*

I covered briefly Visit A City in my other article on how to plan a travel itinerary . Let me share with you my review on this itinerary planner that is absolutely free and easy to use.

Introduction

“Visit A City is all about the fun of planning the details of your trip. We believe that your own personal trip requires you to have your own personal travel guide. Starting with one of our adjustable guides is the easiest way to decide what to do, where to dine and where to put your head down after an enjoyable day. Planning a trip was never this easy!”

That is how Visit A City describes itself. And I think they do live up to the phrase “Planning a trip was never this easy”. Let me explain. Assuming you are going to one of the major destinations in the world, it is highly likely that Visit A City will already have template travel guides and itineraries prepared for you. The 400+ destinations currently covered are divided into different regions:

  • United States and Canada
  • Australia and New Zealand
  • Central and South America
  • Africa and Middle East

You can select the larger cities on the site’s main page. However smaller villages are also available, mainly in Italy at this time but I understand that by the end of the year Visit a City will add much of France, Spain, UK and then USA and Germany to their site.  So before you try to figure out how to plan that idea itinerary, why not just see if there is something you can already work with at Visit A City. Visit a City is free (I guess) because it integrates free content (the reason why I am recommending this site) with their other services (paid tours / purchasing of tickets etc.)

Features offered by Visit a City

Ratings and Reviews

Wonderful idea. solid info. buggy execution..

Let me stare up top I paid for the pro version. This app is overall a wonderful idea. The tours and walking maps are too notch. The information and depth of guides available is amazing. It has SO much potential and is a great value. That being said, a lot of the design choices are just not intuitive, user friendly, and in some cases are downright buggy. Example? There is no way to turn off audio when starting a route to a location. Each time you need to do if manually. Also, when downloading the map, you get a notice that the map is in your downloads… but you can’t exit out of that notice until you close and reopen the app. There are dozens of minor annoyances like that that would take too long to list. At the end of the day though, I have used this for about 6 cities, and have appreciated the content But I hope they do a redesign to make it less glitchy and more intuitive. This app has potential to become really big if they do.

Cheaper than a guided tour

Okay, I see some negative reviews about the map and the clunky app, but I have to say for the price, and yes, including the new yearly subscription, it’s still very worth it. I have used 6 of the paid tours and a few free ones with GPSmyCity. I started with the free, but when I paid for the upgrades (less than $5 at the time), I was pleased. Because I travel at least once or twice a year, I’m willing to pay the subscription mainly to support the team. I just recently came back from Florence where my wife and I spent over $200 for a private guided walking tour that included a fantastic lunch. No complaints, the guide was great and we learned a lot, but it was only 4 hours long and we were at his mercy. For less than $20 using this app, we would’ve been able to map out the tour we wanted, read in advance, and take our time. Yes, you can use Google and Pocket Earth and other free tools, but come on - for $20 you can get a well organized and fun tour with a pretty decent offline map. Spending hundreds in flight and hotels, I don’t $20 for something that would cost 3 times or more for a true guided tour. Oh, and the support team has been awesome for times when I did have problems with the app. I’ve been using them for years and will continue to do so. Don’t let the few negative ads steer you away - give it a shot...

Adore this app!

I downloaded this app a few days ago, and started using it to plan a multi- city trip to Europe. Wow! I love this app - it makes planning super easy. I’ve been traveling far and wide, both professionally and personally, for years. I’ve planned complex trips, and know how overwhelming it can get. So many places to see in so little time, and so sometimes tough to determine which sights to see, and the best route to take when sights to visit are scattered all over a city. Well, this app makes all of this easy, and fun! Great descriptions and photos of all sights, which ones are “must see sights”, ability to add your own sights (like your hotel). The app determines the best route and how long it will take you. There are tons of wonderful canned walks based on categories like “city overview,” “ museums,” “architecture,” etc. and the ability to create customized walks. If you love to travel, this tool will become an addiction. I tried the free version and then decided to upgrade to the full version because the route creation aspect is fantastic.

5 Travel Planning Apps for Free City Guides and Recommended Itineraries

The next time you travel to a new city, check out these sightseeing recommendation tools that other guidebooks might overlook.

The internet is your best travel buddy today. The next time you travel to a new city, check out these apps and websites. You will find offbeat attractions, walking tours, and sightseeing recommendations that guidebooks might overlook.

These apps assume you have already picked your travel destination, so you are now researching what to do once you get there.

From renowned brands offering city guides to local experts giving their insights, there's a healthy mix for every type of traveler. Plus, you don't have to research in advance every time. Some of these tools will dynamically recommend items based on your current location.

1. Visit A City (Web, Android, iOS): Readymade Itineraries Up to One Week

A travel agent will whip up an itinerary of where you should go, what you should see, and so on. Visit A City already has that prepared, ranging from a day's plan to seven days worth of sights and attractions in most tourist destinations.

Each city has multiple guides that cover major sights, tours, and activities. For example, if you pick Barcelona, you'll get a 3-day guide for top attractions, or a 5-day guide for visiting Barcelona with kids, and so on. There's a surprising amount of variety on the website, letting you choose exactly the type of trip you want.

Any itinerary you choose will open with a map and a day-by-day schedule. You can remove or add items, and buy tickets in advance. Other tabs recommend alternative things to do and attractions. The full itinerary can be printed for free, or you can download it for offline use on the Visit A City app.

The website and the app are easy to use and shockingly thorough. Even if you're someone who loves planning your own trips, use one of Visit A City's itineraries as a starting point to make your job easier.

Download: Visit A City for Android | iOS (Free)

2. WhatsHere (Android, iOS): Map of Nearby Tourist Attractions

WhatsHere is a map-based travel guide. Search for a place or let it zoom into your current location, and the app will recommend myriad tourist attractions. As simple as that seems, there are a few features that make it even better.

For starters, WhatsHere has a list of categories to narrow down the places of interest to you: historic, museum, tourist attraction, landmark, trail, UNESCO heritage spots, and so on. Choose one or all, and see them in list form. Each place has multiple tags and you can see how far it is from your current location.

Alternately, open the Map view, which is where WhatsHere really shines. Each pin has a different color and icon, depending on its category. Tap it to get a popup with a brief description about why it's important, and to see how far it is from you. You can bookmark the place, view pictures from others, and even get a quick link to its Wikipedia entry.

Download: WhatsHere for Android | iOS (Free)

3. Spotted By Locals (Web, Android, iOS): Non-Touristy Guides From Locals

Spotted By Locals currently has guides for only 79 cities, spread across Europe, parts of Asia, and North America. But if a city you're visiting is featured on the website, then you won't get a better guide for offbeat tourism.

If you've hosted a tourist in your hometown, you know that there are must-see places that every travel agent will recommend, and a few local secrets that you'd like them to see. That's what makes this special. Each city's guides are written by locals who have lived there for some time.

You will find articles across a range of categories, or view them chronologically. The latter might be better since you get a local's recent recommendation, rather than a place they visited a long time ago.

Spotted By Locals also has mobile apps. While the app is free, each city's guide costs $3.99 to download. In return, you get offline maps and information, but you can see all of the same data on the website for free.

Download: Spotted By Locals for Android | iOS (Free)

4. Awayn (Android, iOS): Visually Rich Guides and Free Magazine

Awayn is a design-focused app with a good mix of features to find travel inspiration. Among the highlights is the free Awayn digital magazine, packaged as part of the app, which tackles one type of travel or region, and includes an interview too.

On the main page of the app, you can search for a city, browse by country, or look at "featured adventures" as recommended by Awayn's community. These featured adventures are actually quite cool and a good place to discover something new. I also liked the idea of browsing by country instead of a city because you might come across an activity that alters your itinerary.

If you like to browse by location, head to Map to find your current GPS coordinates. Awayn will highlight points of interest and travel attractions in your vicinity. The app deserves credit here for recommending places that you wouldn't find in most other travel guides.

Download: Awayn for Android | iOS (Free)

5. CityBook (Android, iOS): Booking.com's Travel Guide

CityBook is the new kid on the block, a product of one of the best hotel booking websites Booking.com . Currently, it hosts city guides for only London, Amsterdam, and Paris, but the number of cities will increase with time.

Depending on the time of the day, CityBook will suggest activities. For example, if you check the app in the morning, you'll find breakfast recommendations. Later in the day, it'll give you evening activities, shows, or bars. It's a nice mixture of historical and cultural places, food and drinks, and events.

The app is a combination of recommendations for places to visit as well as a ticketing office for places like museums. You can add places of interest to your "bucket list" and tick them off as you go about your travels.

Get a Truly Local Experience

One of the joys of traveling is to discover how people from a different culture or lifestyle go about their daily lives or celebrate major events. Most hotels and tour packages will offer some activities, but these are often tourist traps and don't feel genuine.

Instead, as the internet breaks down barriers, use an app. Whether it's enjoying a home-cooked meal with a local or partying with a native, check out these cool travel apps to get a truly local experience .

GPSmyCity app review: Simplifying city breaks with downloadable, self-guided walking tours

Would you like to find a way to make exploring cities easier and more manageable? Do you like the ease and convenience of having a tour guide but prefer the excitement and flexibility of exploring alone?

Yep, me too! If you answered yes then keep reading to find out about GPSmyCity , a travel app that makes visiting cities SO easy.

how much is visit a city app

I often find cities to be overwhelming places to visit because there’s just so much going on. There are so many sights, iconic landmarks, countless places to eat and bucket list locations to visit. And then there’s all the hidden gems and interesting spots off the usual tourist trail you need to dig out and find.

Now imagine an app that stops cities being so overwhelming and guides you around to see all the unmissable locations. But not just the ‘top 10 things to see’ in that city; it can take you to all the places only locals know about, the places you’d usually walk straight past and the places you don’t see in many travel guides.

It will guide you around the city so you don’t get lost and will and ensure you don’t spend your precious holiday walking around in circles!

Let me introduce you to GPSmyCity (and their latest campaign)

how much is visit a city app

I started using GPSmyCity in 2014 when I worked on a project with Citadines Apart’hotels . Over 10 days I visited Paris, Lyon and Berlin and travelled solo around all three cities. It was a fantastic 10 days and GPSmyCity became my little lifesaver!

I hadn’t had much time to plan my time away so when I arrived in each destination I wasn’t sure what to do or where to go so I downloaded a selection of travel articles from GPSmyCity. These articles are free to download and read just like any good travel article you’d find on a blog or a website. But the beauty of GPSmyCity is that you can pay $1.99 and bring that article to life.

By upgrading, the locations featured in the article are plotted on a map and the article essentially becomes a self-guided walking tour. Yes, it’s a map with a little dot so you know exactly where you are and which direction you’re facing! The maps can also be used offline using GPS so you won’t be eating into your data allowance or racking up an enormous bill when you’re abroad. And that’s another travel blogger confession; I’m terrible with directions. I’m always getting lost and when I travel alone I spend half of my time walking around in circles.

I found the app especially useful in a smaller city like Lyon where I really had no idea about what there was to see or do. The app took me to all the top sights and attractions with ease. I felt like a travel blogging cheat as this was such an easy way to discover the city!

GPSmyCity is the largest travel portal of its kind with over 6,000 city walks and travel articles in over 750 cities worldwide. That’s a lot of travel advice!

Reviewing GPSmyCity app

I hadn’t used the app since last summer (I used it for a second time in Paris when Sam and I visited to review the Renaissance Paris Republique Hotel ) so before writing this review I wanted to give it a whirl again. As I haven’t travelled anywhere since I had Baby Joseph in October I decided to use GPSmyCity in my home city of Chester.

Now this is the ultimate test – being a tour guide to a local! Even a virtual tour guide has a tough job as I know most of the top spots to visit and have a long list of my favourites too. And in a small city like Chester there’s a limited amount of places that can be included in a tour.

I downloaded a walking tour of Chester and I had a great day out as I pretended to be a tourist in my own city. The app guided me around the city and showed me all the historical highlights with some interesting facts and information about each sight. The app even surprised me by taking me to places I’d never heard of before. My favourite spots were the places I was vaguely aware of but never visited – because who visits historical monuments or pretty views at home? I’m always too busy trying to do my shopping or meeting up with friends to actually look around and appreciate Chester.

how much is visit a city app

I’m so glad I tested out the app in Chester for two reasons. Firstly, it gave me the chance to explore the city in a way I’ve never done before. I’ve never seen it through the eyes of a tourist and I had time to soak up the culture and historic atmosphere. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it’s very pretty and I finally got to see that. The app was really comprehensive and had some great suggestions.

The second reason is because I got to test out the app again and this reaffirmed how brilliant it is. I’m really conscious about only recommending products I really love on this blog and GPSmyCity is definitely one of those! I’m going away again this weekend (to Barcelona but ssssshhh, it’s a surprise for Sam’s birthday) and I’ve already downloaded a couple of walking tours for while we’re there.

You can download the app for free and get access to many of the articles and walking tours. If you want to use the maps offline then you do need to pay but it’s not a lot and it’s usually worth it to avoid the roaming fees and for the convenience of having all the details there on your phone.

GPSmyCity are currently running a crowd funding Kickstarter campaign and you can get membership to all app content if you donate. The minimum donation is $50 which is actually pretty good if you travel a lot and you’re likely to use it in most cities you visit! You can download the GPSmyCity app here for iOs devices.

how much is visit a city app

[/one_half]

Update: I’ve just returned from Barcelona where I used GPSmyCity ALL the time! It was brilliant for visiting a new (and very confusing!) city. With all those narrow streets and hidden alleys it’s really easy to get lost in Barcelona. There’s also a lot to see in the city so the app made it really easy to find the sights we wanted to see without overwhelming us. You can choose walking tours that focus on specific things such as religious buildings, a Picasso Tour, a tour around the Gothic area, a Gaudi tour, a shopping tour, a La Rambla Walk and loads, loads more.

When we weren’t following the app we would stumble upon cool sights or historic buildings. If we wanted to know what they were, we could check what it was using the app. The app plots where you are on the map and you can see all the attractions around you so you can discover more about the sight that caught your interest.

Tuesday 24th of October 2017

Oh dear ! I downloaded the app and want the maps also so that I can plan my trip to Munich. I paid and the monies went through PayPal but I still have the lite version. I uninstalled it and tried again and still have the lite version. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me, please?

Have you tried contacting GPSmyCity support? I've downloaded it on a couple of devices and didn't have any problems so I think there must be a problem.

So much potential...

So much potential, but not there yet. I love the concept of creating my own tour, but until the ability to EASILY add sites that are not on their preloaded lists (current method not intuitive at all) and the ability to easily bring up a map on a mobile device that shows the path we have chosen are added, it can only be used as an additional reference, not on its own. My dream would be an app that turns my own custom walking tour into a Rick Steves type walking tour. Rick Steves has the walking tour concept down pat. To the developers, keep working on this - you have a good thing going and you are part way there. Even a more visible note telling folks they can add anything they wish if they know the address would be a big help. For instance, I changed our hotel to the cruise port by entering the cruise port address into the hotel address but I had to figure that out on my own. Nothing told me it was an option.

Best travel itinerary app out there!

I’m planning a trip to London and Paris in a couple of weeks. After trying to use Trio Advisor, Yelp and Google Trips without full satisfaction, I stumbled upon this while doing a Google Search. Wow! VisitACity and its website is incredible!!! You can use their itineraries or create your own from scratch, and it calculates the distance and time between points whether you walk or take transit. You can also add notes for each stop, which is super cool for noting special menu items, places to take the best photos, or whatever you want to remember about that place when you go. I am in love with VisitACity! I really can’t believe it only has 7 ratings.

By Hihodado

VisitACity was everything you need for your trip. You are given suggestions of itineraries, the number of days and how packed you want it to be. All the information you need is there-opening times, tickets, background information, etc. The planning was easy in that you could add or delete places, see everything on a map and make adjustments. Then when you get to your destination and start using VisitACity brings up a menu and lets you choose from a variety of maps ex Apple maps, Google maps, Waze, etc. you just pick your map and off you go. The only thing I found frustrating was if you decide to skip one of the things on your itinerary and go to the next, it doesn’t allow you to do that because it’s not the time that you scheduled. You have to go into the website and change it. I’ve told and shown all of my friends about VisitACity and they are amazed. Great job, VisitACity does it all. Your trip is organized so you aren’t wasting time figuring out what to do next. We loved it!

Good and helpful for trip planning!

I love this site and I shared it to everyone I know that travels a lot and do not want to go on a tour. It is a good way to plan your day and to search for things to do. They give you the exact calculations of your hotels and the places to see when you are in a foreign country! Used it for 5 years now when we travel to Europe, Asia and everywhere else and it never fails..🤗 I highly recommend it and just remember that you can modify more by using your laptop/computer and have your itinerary email to you so you can open it with no WiFi. you can do it to your CP as well but you can not modify it as much..🤗

What every self planner / frequent traveler needs

VisitACity is amazing for someone who I would call a “drive by” traveler, who travels often and plans their own trip but doesn’t have time To do research and plan. It is a good starting point. Functionality that allows to add your hotel and restaurant Ana then recalculate the best route is fantastic .. the fact that it tells you which sightseeing places are open or closed on the day of your travle is priceless ..handy links to websites to buy tickets for those place is also amazing ... I’ve been thinking this up in my head for so long and when I found this up it was def a EUREKA moment for me.

Dublin with Spectacular Advice

I’ve created several itineraries for different cities using Visit a City, but this is the first I actually used one, this time for Dublin. It worked great! I downloaded an offline copy and have been able to use it throughout my trip. It showed me all the top attractions without pushing the sale of admission tickets. It included a map to everything in my customized itinerary, and when I added my hotel, it included that in the mix. I’m looking forward to using VisitACity for many other cities in the future. If you have a city on your bucket list, it’s even fun to just explore the sights.

Invaluable in planning our trip

I have been using VisitACity to plan a trip to three cities. So many benefits: maps, showing where the attractions are so you can more efficiently plan your day, descriptions, which include the attractions ratings, highlights, opening times, recommended time to allocate, ability to find restaurants near the attractions. You can set up your itinerary and plan your day and VisitACity shows how much time it will take to walk between attractions. You can easily change your itinerary, make notes, and add tours or entertainment. I can’t say enough good things about VisitACity!

Incredibly useful and intuitive for trip planning. AMAZING.

I travel quite a bit and am a huge pre-planner - VisitACity has proved to be one of the most useful trip planning resources I’ve ever encountered. The itineraries you start with are great, and then the ability to customize them completely (add your own sights, swap days around, add days, etc) and have VisitACity update all connected info - like alerting you if you’ve moved a sight to a time it’s not open - is SO HANDY. I also really like the maps, and the walking/transit times given between each sight. Please expand to even more cities!

Best travel app

I admit I found it much easier to use website to plan the trip then VisitACity . I tried tons of travel planners and this is the best site. Once you have the plan done, you can share it or for me being old school, I printed it for a hard copy. There are areas it can improve on, but compared to other apps, this easy. I had to email them with a technical support and they were awesome. Download it and give it a try, but remember the website is easier to do the initial plan. 5 stars me is odd, but VisitACity deserves it.

Was good but the update is terrible

I made plans for a trip to Barcelona. The night before I’m to leave they completed an update. This deleted only my Barcelona plans and they could not be recovered. I have food allergies and am staying in 2 different hotels. I am redoing my entire 5 day plan and find that I cannot add restaurants twice anymore. I also cannot change/add a different hotel to multiple days. There is no override or way around it that I can find. There may be a way but this occurred at 4:00 PM and I am leaving for the airport at 3:00 AM so I honestly just do not have time to figure it out again. I had used VisitACity before and thought it was fantastic but I’m upset and disappointed with the new layout and limitations as well as the surprise of the lack of carryover from my plans that I had arranged.

Trip to Amsterdam

Just planned a 3 day trip to Amsterdam. this app made it unbelievably simple to plan this trip, choose activities and arrange schedules. Everything I needed was all in one place, no more searching all over the internet. The information and descriptions provided were fantastic resources. The ability to refine and adjust schedules was greatly appreciated. VisitACity also provides great tools (maps, directions, time schedules, etc.) to use on the trip and hopefully make it a super experience. Will review again after I return home.

App not opening

I absolutely love VisitACity. Each time we travel we use it to check things out and plan the itinerary. However, for some reason VisitACity is not loading for the last few days. I tried deleting and uploading VisitACity again and still nothing. I am not sure if other customers experienced the same issue? Update: I didn’t do the latest Iphone update and that was causing the issue. I have since updated to the latest version and now it works.

Favorite app of all time!

I have lived in Europe for two years. The first 8 months I spent hours on the computer trying to piece together trips for my family. The first time I used it was London and I refuse to go somewhere and not have a this app plan. It made traveling the underground a snap. this app does all the work for me and I’m not backtracking and wasting time finding out opening hours/days/prices. this app gives me the freedom of easily creating an amazing adventure for my family with minimal time and avoiding the “rabbit hole” of the Internet.

By vritterv

Planning made easy

this app was the first easy, intuitive and helpful apps I used. I tried a handful of planning apps but gave up on the others. this app allowed me to immediately start planning my trip and get excited about it! When I realized that I could add my hotel and it would time walking to and from, I was even more excited about VisitACity. It will also calculate the best day to add an attraction as well as make sure attractions are open. This is a must use for any trip.

Great trip planning app!

I love VisitACity for trip planning. I like that it has all the major city sites, with descriptions that provide useful information about them. Nice that it includes itineraries for different numbers of days and different needs, etc. to give you an idea how much time to allocate for various places and ways to maximize short visits. I wouldn’t characterize it as a “one-stop” place for all your travel needs, but all in all a very handy and useful app.

Love the app overall but could use improvements

I really love that I can plan out my trip with VisitACity and that it also calculates travel time. I think it would be more user friendly if you could just easily rearrange your daily itinerary without having to go through so many steps to do so. I also wish there was a way I could add notes to each event. And for the events that I add that don’t have a name, such as the Airbnb I’m staying at, I would like to be able to edit the title. Other than that I think it’s a great app.

Great planning tool, but needs some fine tuning

I started using this app to plan for a European trip that takes us to several major destinations. I found VisitACity intuitive & easy to use. It has various levels of assistance with itinerary suggestions and tour options that can be customized to suit ones’ schedule & activity level. I did find that VisitACity stalled a few times and I had to restart in order to escape a few pages. I think with some fine tuning VisitACity can be a very valuable travel tool.

By maritravels

itinerary & maps can go offline

Very useful in mapping out the major sites to see and then downloading these for offline use. The site includes info on what to look for in the site, days open, hours, admission fees, and walking distance to next site, with offline map to keep from getting lost. They also sell organized tours for those who don't want to plan their own sightseeing. No obnoxious pop ups or ads.

By Teemoe20

Just what I have been looking for

I have been looking for an app to track my trips and add places that I would like to go. VisitACity gives me ideas by setting up itineraries for me and allows me to adjust them to fit my needs. One thing that I would like to see is the ability to change the actual times. We made reservations for dinner and I may I am not able to change the time for that particular item without adjusting the length of the time I’m at other places.

Excellent Tour App

I’ve always used VisitACity when traveling. Very useful in USA, Europe and Japan. I hope they will add other tourist attractions other than mostly museums because museums cost money. I also request that they add places where to find food ranging from expensive to cheap prices, stores nearby where to buy day to day needs and hotels near tourist attractions. Also weather conditions for each cities. Overall I like it it’s the best travel app imo.

By N’sworld

10 years and happy

I’ve been using VisitACity for 10 years, I travel A LOT, I adjust times, dates and activities and attractions w easy. Usually I am the lead in my groups and people are always so impressed and satisfied. I set activities that are near eachother for same day, usually hitting one region or area per day. Very seldeom I use public transport, usually all by foot and the map option allows me to plan accordingly.

Great resources and support

I have used VisitACity to purchase tickets in two different countries. It’s very easy to use, and the directions they give are detailed and helpful. When I used it for my last event, I wasn’t sure if I was at the correct location, I reached out to their team via WhatsApp and they replied back to me in less then two minutes. I will use VisitACity any time I travel abroad !

Fantastic app

I used this app to travel to Europe. It took the hassle out of connecting with an unfamiliar foreign area and language barrier. I was able to plan my whole vacation. It gives suggestions on the number of days you want to plan out and itinerary (packed, top Attractions, Must sees, ect.) I was able to book the city tours, shuttles back the forth to the airport, Research and reserve restaurants. Love is app!!! What a fantastic tool to make you vacation memorable what years to come.

Do-It-Yourself City Tours with GPSmyCity

By Jennifer Dombrowski 12 Comments

The average city walking tour just isn’t our thing. Unless it’s a city tour that’s active like a biking tour or a segway tour, or combines something like food and city sights, we much prefer a do-it-yourself tour. We can take our time taking photographs, we can linger as long as we want at interesting spots and move on quickly from those that just aren’t that interesting. Best of all, we don’t have to battle any other tour group members for the perfect angle or pretend to wait patiently while they snap selfies. So when the folks at GPSmyCity reached out and asked us to check out their app, it sounded like an interesting solution to toting around a guide book (we don’t like to do that either) or having to Google on the go.

We decided to put GPSmyCity to the test right here at home in Bordeaux. It’s a place we know like the back of our hand and we could really get a feel for the accuracy and usefulness of the app.

What is GPSmyCity?

GPSmyCity is a free app for iPhone or Android that says it has more than 5,500 self-guided walks and travel articles in 700 cities around the world. First, it is its own app. Then, inside of GPSmyCity you can search for cities. We obviously searched for Bordeaux, and there’s another app, “Bordeaux Maps and Walks by GPSmyCity”. Both are free, though you can upgrade the city apps like Bordeaux Maps and Walks for $4.99 and get access to additional features like location services, city maps and walking directions.

There are also user generated walks in GPSmyCity called articles. Basically, as a blogger we could sign up as a contributor and turn some of our blog posts in to self-guided walks in the GPSmyCity app. Like the walks created by GPSmyCity staff, there’s an option to upgrade the articles for $1.99 and get access to the walk with directions to each place, monument or attraction from your location using your GPS enabled smartphone.

The folks at GPSmyCity provided us with some promo codes to upgrade their Bordeaux Maps and Walks app and an article called “Bordeaux Secret Sights Tour”.

Putting GPSmyCity to the Test

We started with the Bordeaux Maps and Walks by GPSmyCity and since we’re familiar with all the regular sights, we decided to try out the Chartrons Antique Hunting Discovery Walk. Though not far from where we live in the center, Chartrons is one of the neighborhoods we’re not too familiar with.

Chartrons District Bordeaux

Chartrons is known for its cobbled lanes and antique shops

The walk introduces itself with a brief overview of the Chartrons district. This neighborhood was formerly where the English settled when they came to Bordeaux to trade wine. There’s a few sights, but the main activity in Chartrons is to wander the lively streets and go antique shopping in the many antique shops.

GPSmyCity

Rue Notre Dame is lined with antique shops

Where the Chartrons Antique Hunting walk fell a bit short is we wished that the pin pointed locations would have offered a bit more information than just an address. The shop name and hours definitely would have been helpful to know for planning a good time to do the walk as tourists might not know that most of these shops are closed on Sundays in France and many close during the day for a lunch between 12:30pm – 2pm.

Still undecided, we decided to check out part of the City Orientation Tour, included in the Bordeaux Maps and Walks by GPSmyCity. It does a good job of covering the major sites and providing a short history of each sight, though several of the walks could be combined and you might not necessarily know that unless you lived in Bordeaux. For example, the City Orientation Tour brings you to the Saint Andre Cathedral, but the Palais de Rohan which is located within seconds of the cathedral, is located in a different walk.

GPSmyCity

Cour Mably is a hidden courtyard it’s easy to pass right by if you don’t know it’s there

We also tried out the Bordeaux Secret Sights Tour, which is one of the tours created from a travel article by a local British blogger living in Bordeaux. It works in the same way as the Bordeaux Maps and Walks by GPSmyCity. With sights mentioned that you won’t find in a typical guidebook or a map you might pick up at the Tourist Office, the location feature was particularly helpful in navigating you right to the more obscure sights. Some, like Cour Mably, could easily be overlooked since it is a courtyard hidden through a door you might not be sure you should enter if you’re a tourist visiting Bordeaux.

The Verdict

GPSmyCity is a useful alternative to carrying around a heavy guide book and provides interesting information about a city’s sights and attractions. We also liked the travel articles, which provide information beyond your typical guidebook like more obscure sights, shops, restaurants and more. We definitely couldn’t have bought a guidebook for as little as $4.99, which is the cost to upgrade the various city apps.

As noted about the Chartrons Antique Discovery Walk, we spotted some improvements that can be made. GPSmyCity is doing a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to create what they’re calling the world’s 1 st GPS-powered travel encyclopedia. Funds collected during the crowdfunding campaign will be used to double the number of cities available from 750 to 1500 and make improvements like adding an Android version of the app.

Lifetime Membership and Get 1 Free Upgrade

By pledging $60 in the crowdfunding campaign, you get a lifetime membership with access to all currently available and future walks and travel articles in GPSmyCity.

If you’d like to try GPSmyCity yourself, remember that the app is free. And you can get a free upgrade for a travel article of your choice until March 20, 2017. To get a free upgrade, contact [email protected] and mention that you’ve read about the offer here on Luxe Adventure Traveler.

Great app functionality! If only internet prices are also good on foreign trips!

January 23, 2017 at 12:52 PM

We usually pick up a pay-as-you-go SIM card and have found them to be quite affordable. The maps are also Google Maps integrated, so the nice thing is that you can put in the walking directions when you have wifi and the dot still moves with you even if you don’t have service.

January 23, 2017 at 1:41 AM

I love the idea of being able to create your own custom walk. Very cool. And, taking one of their pre-designed walks would be great with kids in tow as sometimes tours are difficult with other people. I find the kids get bored which can irritate other people on the tour. This way we could avoid that from happening.

Love doing self-guided walking tours. Ones that you can customize are even more valuable and useful. This looks like a great App, shall check it out!

January 24, 2017 at 11:07 AM

This sounds like a great app to have! It would be way more convenient than a heavy and bulky guidebook and I like that you can browse through to create your own guide if you want, as well. I love that you tried it out in a city you are so familiar with–such a great way to get a feel for how useful the guides are. Glad to hear you enjoyed it! We will have to check it out!

I got the app and designed 3 tours. I wish there was a simple edit button to revise custom walks, ie. in reverse order or omitting a stop etc. without having to make it from the beginning. But it is amazing! I’m hoping it’ll actually guide my steps so I don’t get lost.

NEW YORK --  New York City is now taking applications for the Section 8 waiting list, for the first time in nearly 15 years . The application window closes this weekend.

The New York City Housing Authority's Section 8 waitlist had been closed since December 2009. Here's everything to know about who's eligible and how to apply.

NYC Section 8 application process

The application window opened at midnight on Monday, June 3 and will last until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, June 9.

It's free to apply, and the online portal is available in English and four other languages.

"We currently have 3,700 people left on our waiting list from 2009. We are working through those families, and so now is a perfect time to open up the waiting list to an additional 200,000 individuals," said NYCHA CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt.

According to the site, the application process takes about 20 minutes. If you don't finish in one session, your information will not be saved , and you'll have to start from the beginning.

The site also says duplicate applications will be rejected, so submit only one.

"Submitting an application does not guarantee the application will be placed on the waitlist or that you will receive an offer of housing," the site reads. "All applications submitted are subject to NYCHA's review and approval."

City officials encourage people to apply online, but two  Customer Contact Centers  are open on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn and on East Fordham Road in the Bronx for anyone who has questions or needs a paper application.

NYCHA expects to receive up to one million applications before the deadline. The agency hopes to have the waitlist finalized by August 1, and will then start calling people about their status.

NYC Section 8 eligibility guidelines

Who can apply? Eligibility is based on five key factors:

  • Income: Applicants must fall within specific income limits, which can be found here. For a single person, the annual income limit is $54,350. For a family of four, it's $77,650.
  • Immigration status: At least one member of the household must have an eligible immigration status.
  • Family: Applicants must be members of a family and meet the definition under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which reads, "A single person or group of two or more persons with or without children who maintain an interdependent relationship and whose income and resources are available to meet the household's needs."
  • Social Security Number: All members of the household with a SSN must provide them as part of the application process.
  • Other standards: All members of the household ages 16 and older must pass a criminal background check and a nationwide sex offender check.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program offers subsidies to eligible low-income families, so they can rent in the private market.

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) runs the largest Section 8 program in the country, with approximately 85,000 current vouchers.

Cicada map 2024: See where to find Broods XIII and XIX; latest info on emergence

how much is visit a city app

If you haven't seen them yet, you may have heard them: the periodical cicadas that are out in full force in nearly 20 U.S. states across the Southeast and Midwest.

These 17 states, which range from Oklahoma to Wisconsin to North Carolina and more, are seeing the trillions of cicadas emerging this year in a rare, double brood event.

The two broods this year, the 13-year Brood XIX located mainly in the Southeast and the 17-year Brood XIII in the Midwest, have not emerged together in 221 years and are not expected to do so again until 2245.

Thanks to warm soil temperatures and ideal conditions, cicadas from both broods have already made their way above ground and the emergence is already in full swing.

Here's where you can find cicadas above ground this year.

What do cicadas eat? Lifecycle, diet and biting habits explained

2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge

The two cicada broods were projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, beginning in many states in April and May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

Where are the cicadas already out in 2024?

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX are now completing its emergence as the brood is out in full force in states across the Midwest and Southeast, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

They have been spotted on the app in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Brood XIII has started to emerge in Wisconsin, Iowa and Indiana and throughout the Chicago area and around central and northern Illinois around Peoria and Champaign, according to the tracking service.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These different species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

How long will the cicadas be above ground?

How long cicadas live depends on their brood and if they are an annual or periodical species.

The two periodical broods this summer are Brood XIX, which have a 13-year life cycle, and Brood XIII, which have a 17-year life cycle.

Once male and female periodical cicadas have mated and the latter has laid its eggs, the insects will die after spending only a few weeks above ground − anywhere from three to six weeks after first emerging.

That means many of this year's periodical cicadas are set to die in June, though some could die off in late May or July, depending on when they emerged.

The nymphs of annual cicadas remain underground for  two to five years , according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. These cicadas are called " annual " because some members of the species emerge as adults each year.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call that they make before mating.

The periodical 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas  are the loudest , partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.
