Cashel Palace Hotel Cashel Tipperary Ireland Historic Hotel 5 Star Afternoon Tea in Queen Anne Room

Ireland, for the Hibernian hideaway

Add the Cranberries and U2 to that honeymoon soundtrack—the emerald hills of  Ireland are calling. Roughly two hours from  Dublin , Relais & Châteaux's recently refurbished  Cashel Palace Hotel in County Tipperary reopened in March 2022. The stately Palladian manor, built for an archbishop in 1732, now has an array of modern amenities including a spa and sauna, a 56-foot indoor pool, elevators, and air-conditioned guest rooms.  With just nine sumptuous suites and 42 bedrooms, the property feels intimate—a lovely place to take a morning stroll through elegant English-style gardens, relax in an outdoor seaweed bath, or sip afternoon tea from delicate bone china in the elegant Queen Anne Room. Adventurous couples will make the most of these picturesque country environs, of course, by exploring the medieval Rock of Cashel and Hore Abbey, joining a spine-tingling ghost walk through spooky Leap Castle, or hiking the ancient pilgrim path of St. Declan's Way.

Ritz Carlton Maldives Fari Islands

The Maldives, for the glam Crusoe experience

If there was ever a time and place to splurge on a vacation, it’s a honeymoon in the  Maldives . Screensaver-blue waters and Pinterest-worthy overwater bungalows are a common sight in this corner of the world, but the enchanting  Fari Islands —with its ultra-luxe resorts, community marina, and beach club—really ups the ante. A 50-minute speedboat ride from Velana International Airport in the North Malé Atoll brings couples to one of two stunning hotels:  Patina Maldives, Fari Islands and the  Ritz-Carlton Maldives . A third, the Kengo Kuma–designed  Capella Maldives , is slated to open in 2027.  Patina Maldives, Fari Islands , is the first flagship property from  Patina Hotels & Resorts , a new-ish lifestyle brand from Capella Hotel Group. It was designed by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan of Studio MK27 and features 90 one- to three-bedroom beach and pool villas, 20 studios, a specially commissioned James Turrell Skyspace pavilion, and a plant-based meal experience set in an organic permaculture garden. Honeymooners, in particular, should take note of Patina’s new Island Romance package, which bundles together private dinners, couples’ massages, meditation sessions, and a chance to take part in the resort’s coral-conservation program.

Napa Valley, for the oenophile retreat

A honeymoon in wine country? Sounds like the perfect pairing. At the 712-acre  Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection on the banks of the Napa River, rustic cottages (from $995 per night) are situated among rolling vines. (The working ranch and vineyard is known for its pinot noir and chardonnay varietals.) Couples can cycle alongside olive groves, play bocce on the “great lawn,” splash around the resort's hilltop pool, treat yourselves to a wine-themed spa treatment, vineyard hop to neighboring wineries (including  Scribe and  Matthiasson ), or take a 10-minute hotel shuttle to downtown Napa, where they can sample top-notch cabernet sauvignon and global cuisine. ( Angèle Restaurant & Bar , a riverside spot for romantic French fare, is fantastic for both.) While downtown, pay a visit to  Brown Estate —the first and only Black-owned winery in the region. A bottle of their zinfandel makes for a memorable souvenir.

Lisbon Portugal. Bridge. Water. Tourists. People. Building. Architecture

Portugal, for the city-beach combo

A newly year-round direct flight from New York to Funchal, the capital of Portugal’s Autonomous Region of Madeira, has made the far-flung archipelago more accessible than ever for American travelers. Beyond its thrilling hiking and mountain biking trails, Madeira is heaven for foodies: Dine at the remote beachfront restaurant  Fajã dos Padres , where many of the ingredients are farmed organically on-site; sip rum at Porto da Cruz, a distillery run by steam engine; and settle in for a six-, nine-, or 12-course tasting menu at the Michelin-starred Desarma , opened in 2023 by Chef Octávio Freitas on the rooftop of the boutique-y Views Baía hotel.

When you’re ready to trade small-town vibes for big-city action, fly to the Portuguese capital of  Lisbon , home of the oldest bookstore on earth ( Bertrand ) as well as the recently reopened  Royal Treasury Museum at the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda. Browse the luxury boutiques lining the Avenida da Liberdade, a.k.a. the Champs Elysées of Lisbon; take a tile workshop at the  Museu Nacional do Azulejo ; or soak up more Vitamin D by driving an hour south to the beaches in the stunning Setúbal district. Kayaking beneath the peninsular cliffs in Parque Natural de Arrábida is a must, as is locking in one of the 53 rooms or suites at  AlmaLusa , the only hotel in Comporta that is walkable to a beach.

Blue Pond Hokkaido

Hokkaido, for the winter wonderland

Instead of following the crowd on the well-trodden Tokyo-Mt. Fuji-Kyoto route, honeymooners should consider a winter getaway to Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island and the largest and wildest of its 47 prefectures. Kickstart the journey at Akan Mashu National Park by paddling around Lake Kussharo, the second largest caldera lake in the world, and down the serene Kushiro River with Kussharo Eco Tours , one of two local operators running canoe tours year-round. (If you’re lucky, your guide may spot a white-tailed eagle or rare Blakiston’s fish owl.) Lake Mashu, also within park boundaries, is equally worth a stop. It’s one of the clearest lakes on Earth, primarily because humans are forbidden from going on or in it. The best way to experience Mashu’s majesty is via a snowshoeing tour, led by soft-spoken naturalist and hobby photographer Shinobu Katase , around the rim of its caldera. Learning about the Ainu, the original inhabitants of Hokkaido, on an enlightening Anytime, Ainutime! excursion through Lake Akan Ainu Kotan, one of Japan’s largest indigenous villages, is another can’t-miss experience. Language, foraging, culture, crafts—it’s all covered, and you can further support the community by shopping at one of the 20-plus Ainu-owned stores in the area. Whatever you get up to by day, the open-air onsen at Oyado KinkiyuBettei Suikazura in the steaming hot springs town of Kawayu is where you want to unwind at night. The spring-fed waters rank among Japan’s most acidic—which does wonders for some skin conditions but can also corrode jewelry (so slip those new rings off before you plunge in).

Machu Picchu in the fog Cuzco Peru

Peru, for the Amazonian immersion

For newlyweds craving a touch of adventure, Uniworld’s 16-day  Peruvian Amazon & Machu Picchu Exploration (from $13,999 per guest) delivers in spades. The itinerary starts and ends in Lima and includes a weeklong cruise on the  Aria Amazon, a luxurious river boat with floor-to-ceiling windows in its 16 chicly designed staterooms.  Among the featured excursions: a skiff ride on the Marañón River in Iquitos, where lucky couples might spot pink dolphins or one of 64 rare birds; kayaking or canoeing the tarry black waters of the Yanayacu-Pucate River; jungle trekking with a naturalist through the San Jose de Sarapanga forest, eyes peeled for 300-pound water lilies; and visiting a manatee rescue and rehabilitation center in Maynas. The pièce de résistance, of course, is a visit to the epic wonder that is Machu Picchu .

Bermuda, for the easy-breezy island getaway

Maybe it's the pink sand beaches or the British colonial architecture or the ease of flying there in two hours from New York City, but Bermuda is always popular with the honeymoon crowd. It's even more enticing now that a state-of-the-art terminal has opened at LF Wade International Airport. Taking a page from the Singapore Changi playbook, the sustainably designed project features a putting green, nature trail, and outdoor terraces. On the hotel front, The Loren at Pink Beach lures newlyweds with its contemporary design, one-bedroom villa suites with private heated pools, and fun honeymooner activities like shipwreck diving (Bermuda’s coastline holds the world record for most wrecks per square mile). Other postnuptial properties to consider include Azura Bermuda , a cliffside boutique hotel overlooking South Shore, and the century-old Cambridge Beaches Resort , with its full-service marina and European-style spa. Besides swimming and sunbathing, newlyweds can plant a cedar tree to commemorate their special day, thanks to a partnership with the Bermuda National Trust , or explore Black-owned businesses and other historic points of interest along the African Diaspora Heritage Trail . At sunset, toast to married life at The Birdcage , a seasonal rooftop cocktail bar.

Kirkjubøur and Koltur at Foaroe Islands. Traditional black tarred timber and grass roofs.

The Faroe Islands, for the Faroese fairytale

A storybook wedding deserves a storybook honeymoon—and a road trip around the Faroe Islands is the stuff of Grimms' Fairy Tales . Fly into Vágar Airport and pick up a vehicle from 62°N Car Rental ; the North Atlantic archipelago is well-connected via tunnels and bridges, with mom-and-pop accommodations sprinkled throughout the islands. At Hanusarstova , an airy cottage in the village of Æðuvík, about a 20-minute drive from the capital of Tórshavn, young farmers Harriet and John ply their Airbnb guests with homemade breakfasts—including eggs from their own chickens. Alternatively, couples can base themselves at the four-star, Green Key -certified Hotel Brandan in Tórshavn, and make day trips along the Sóljuleiðir, or Buttercup routes, named for the Faroese national flower. Intrepid honeymooners who take it slow will be rewarded with cascading waterfalls and spectacular hiking trails, turf roof homes nestled amid rolling green hills, and an abundance of charming villages (Tjørnuvík, Gjógv, and Skálavík, to name just a few).

New Orleans Louisiana

New Orleans, for the epicures’ delight

For newlyweds who first connected over a mutual love of food and drink, there’s no better place to indulge your cravings than New Orleans—land of powdery-sweet beignets, killer po’boys, and muffulettas the size of hubcaps. Check in at Hotel Peter & Paul , a 19th-century Catholic church, convent, and schoolhouse in the Marigny neighborhood that has been lovingly transformed into one of the finest boutique properties in the South. Couples can select from dozens of one-of-a-kind rooms decked out in rich tapestries, Italianate marble fireplaces, and hand-painted tile showers. More importantly, there’s the excellent Elysian Bar in the former rectory; the aperitivo hour (3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday) with its $9 pineapple shrub daiquiris and rillettes is the ultimate warmup for the bar crawl and food binge to come. Our suggestion: Start with a round of Vieux Carrés while going ‘round-and-round at the famous Carousel Bar in the storied Hotel Monteleone before eventually making your way to Fritai for innovative Haitian-Creole dishes like kabrit (crispy twice-cooked goat with rice and beans, fried plantains, and spicy relish), the charmingly Frenchified N7 in the Bywater for the housemade charcuterie and frog legs karaage with sambal aioli, or the Rabbit Hole Supper Club pop-up at Trap Kitchen, where the quirky parade of genre-rattling dishes sometimes includes a burnt grain salad we still dream about. When you’re ready for a nightcap, duck into the velvety-luxe Peacock Room at the Kimpton Hotel Fontenot , where the spirit menu is as vast as the vibe is sultry. If you’ve left any room for non-culinary activities, the Germaine Cazenave Wells Mardi Gras Museum , secreted away above Arnaud’s Restaurant; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art ; and City Park , whose handsome old oak trees drip with Spanish moss; are always worth a detour.

Tutka Bay Lodge

Alaska, for northern adventure

Many travelers to the 49th state experience it from a ship deck, but tackling it by car, foot, and plane pays dividends for more DIY-type honeymooners. Start at the family-run Tutka Bay Lodge on Kachemak Bay near Homer. Nestled amid 35 acres of pristine forest, the rustic-luxe boutique property offers daily cooking classes, meditation and yoga, sea kayaking, bear viewing, glacier trekking, deep-sea fishing, and tours of the family’s nearby flower farm.

Next stop: a charming A-frame cabin at Salted Roots in Seward. Sandwiched between a spruce forest and Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula, its private deck is the perfect perch to kick back after a packed day of sightseeing (or flightseeing, as the case may be). The couple that runs the place also owns Flamingo Lounge , a craft cocktail bar-cum steakhouse in town; ask them for tips on hiking, orca spotting, and where to buy the most unique Alaskan-made souvenirs.  For a grand finale, fly an hour north to Fairbanks and bed down in a glass dome igloo at Borealis Basecamp outside Fairbanks. Pitched amid towering spruce trees under an inky black sky, it’s ideal for catching the aurora borealis, which is most active from late August through April. When you’re not watching the night sky, you can walk alongside reindeer in a boreal forest or make a day trip to the Arctic Circle.

The Vietage Private Booth

Vietnam, for the romantic rail journey

One of the most relaxing ways to experience the beauty of Central Vietnam is aboard The Vietage by Anantara , a luxury train carriage operated by Anantara. Originating in Đà Nẵng, it chugs its way through the scenic countryside and along the South China Sea, ending in the coastal town of Quy Nhơn. The 12-passenger car is dolled up in 1920s and '30s French Colonial style, complete with a full bar. Couples can indulge in endless beer and bubbly during the six-hour journey; A three-course meal made with local ingredients and a 15-minute head-and-shoulder massage are also included. The ideal way for newlyweds to experience the route is by booking Anantara's Exploring the Central Coast package (from $1,235 for two people). It features two one-way tickets aboard The Vietage, bookended by two nights in a deluxe balcony room at Anantara Hoi An , just a half hour's drive from Đà Nẵng, and two nights in a glamorous oceanfront villa at Anantara Quy Nhơn Villas . Honeymooners won't even have to worry about feeding themselves; daily breakfast and dining credits are folded into the rate.

The Great Smoky Mountains, for the backpackers’ romp

For couples bonded over their love of the great outdoors, the five-day Great Smoky Mountains Hiking trip (from $5,899 per person for a private guided excursion) from REI Adventures will leave them breathless—literally and figuratively. The itinerary winds through the 522,427-acre Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina and includes a visit to the 19th-century John Oliver Cabin in Cades Cove, one of the park’s oldest historical structures, and Andrews Bald, a double peak on Forney Ridge and the highest bald in the Smokies. It also covers a leg of the Appalachian Trail, culminating with panoramic views of Fontana Lake from atop the historic Shuckstack fire tower. The hiking will be moderately challenging, covering between four and nine miles per day, but honeymooners won’t rough it come nightfall: sleeping arrangements include a stay at the 76-year-old Nantahala Village Resort and glamping in Under Canvas ’ safari-style tents with real beds, private baths, and wood-burning stoves. Meals, guides, park fees, and transportation from Knoxville are included.

Dubai, for the Arabian dream

For couples who believe luxury and romance go hand in hand, there are few destinations more glamorous than Dubai. The largest city in the United Arab Emirates boasts some of the world’s most opulent hotels and spas, a cityscape rife with glittering architecture, and more than a dozen Michelin-starred restaurants. One&Only Royal Mirage makes for a stunning basecamp with its jewel-toned Arabian suites, tiled hammam, and lagoon-style swimming pools (including one reserved exclusively for adults). Pry yourself away from the five-star property and the whole city awaits: Sign up for a Dubai Fountain lake ride at the foot of the Burj Khalifa , the world’s tallest building; hop aboard a traditional abra at Dubai Creek to browse mountains of colorful spices and gobs of wedding jewelry in the traditional spice and gold souks, respectively; or check out the knock-your-socks-off Lost Chambers Aquarium at Atlantis The Palm , home to more than 65,000 marine animals. End the trip with a stay at Bab Al Shams , a splendid Arabian Desert resort just beyond city limits. Days here are spent bashing dunes, riding camels, and splashing around Escher-esque, multi-tiered swimming pools. Nights are for stargazing and, well, use your imagination.

Montana, for the wilderness vacation

When the team behind  The Resort at Paws Up , a four-time Readers' Choice Awards winner and one of the most exclusive addresses in rural  Montana , announced the summer 2021 opening of a new adults-only retreat, newlyweds took notice.  The Green O is tucked into the same 37,000-acre working ranch that houses Paws Up—deep in the forested Blackfoot River Valley yet less than a 40-minute drive to the Missoula airport. The Green O’s 12 standalone guest houses have enormous windows for taking in the serene woodlands, but the two-story  Tree Haus layout, lofted 23 feet above the ground, feels the most private. When couples aren’t curling up by one of two fireplaces or soaking in the ground-level outdoor hot tub, they can pass the hours horseback riding, hot air ballooning, and whitewater rafting. Food, wine, airport transfers, and the use of a Lexus SUV on-site are included in the nightly rate.

Indonesias Komodo National Park

Indonesia, for the seekers’ sanctuary

Newlyweds keen on taking their relationship to a deeper level can get their minds, bodies, and souls in sync at AYANA Estate on Jimbaran Bay in the south of Bali. The one-bedroom cliff villas have sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, plus plunge pools and personalized butler service, but it’s the property’s cultural and holistic wellness offerings that really entice: sunrise yoga, sound bath meditation, Hindu temple visits, batik painting classes; tours of the on-site Saka Museum , an architecturally stunning cultural center that explores the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana; herbal remedy workshops where participants harvest their own ingredients from the resort’s five-acre organic farm; and thalassotherapy, a spa treatment that heats saltwater to the optimum temperature to stimulate circulation and rebalance the body’s minerality. Honeymooners can also request dinner on a private pier surrounded by flickering tiki torches or a couples massage in twin villas nested atop ocean-facing rocks.

From Bali, hop a one-hour flight to Komodo National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda archipelago known for its rugged landscapes and scaly residents (more than 4,000 Komodo dragon monitor lizards call this home). Drop your bags at AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach in Labuan Bajo and head straight for the water: Popular activities here include stand-up paddleboarding and sea kayaking, snorkeling at Menjerite Island, planting coral with an in-house marine biologist, and exploring Komodo’s various nooks and crannies aboard Lako di’a , a traditional phinisi yacht fit for Balinese royalty.

The 39 best honeymoon destinations for 2024

By Laura Chubb and Anya Meyerowitz

The best honeymoon destinations for 2024

The word honeymoon traditionally referred to the common medieval tradition of drinking mead (a fermented honey-based tipple) for a month after your wedding. Thankfully, today, the term is rather more synonymous with spending quality time around your eternal plus-one somewhere bucket list-worthy, whether that means trekking through exotic rainforests or lounging on a biscuit-hued beach. Before the fun can begin though, there’s the serious business of planning the holiday. With so much expectation, we’ve pulled together a list of some of the most enchanting honeymoon destinations we can think of. From classics like the Maldives to the more unexpected (in honeymoon terms) destinations such as Scandinavia; from the far-flung beaches of Bora Bora to the closer-to-home rugged landscapes of Scotland, our definitive list of the best honeymoon destinations for 2024 and beyond has you covered.

1. The Maldives

If you have visions of yourselves lazing in hammocks in your over-water villa, while your butler brings you a Martini by boat, then the Maldives is the honeymoon destination for you.

Every year the resorts of the Maldives out-do each other with increasingly opulent and romantic experiences – candlelit dinners for two on your own private sandbank; rambling wooden suites on stilts out to sea, which can only be accessed by boat. The only difficult decision you'll have to make is choosing the right island to suit you. Almost all of them offer the kind of dreamy, laid-on-luxury holiday fit for a honeymoon, surrounded by the bluest of blue scenery that never, ever loses its sparkle.

Go for a hit of winter sun between November and April.

Where to stay

Some of our favourites include the designer good looks mixed with relaxed boho vibes at Joali , and Soneva Jani , a dazzling hangout that has some of the biggest villas with huge private pools. For more recommendations, see our edit of the best hotels in the Maldives or our guide to Maldives honeymoons .

Amalfi Coast

2. Amalfi Coast, Italy

Closer to home but with the promise of ethereal charm, Italy’s Amalfi Coast is widely considered one of the world’s most breathtaking coastlines, beloved for its chocolate box towns, white-washed villages and the shimmering Mediterranean Sea. You’ll be hard-pressed to find one spot here that isn’t a photo opportunity, but the Amalfi is much more than the sum of its biscuit-hued beaches and hidden coastal caves. This romantic area offers a slower pace of life, and easy charm that lulls even the most highly-strung newlyweds (table planning will do that to any couple) into a pervading calm. Dotted with forests, mountains, small fishing villages and ample opportunity for island-hopping, it’s not hard to see how this no-stress destination makes it onto the list of best honeymoon destinations. For maximum romance, rent a vintage, open-top car and drive yourselves around the 50km stretch of road between the port city of Salerno and clifftop Sorrento, winding past grand villas, terraced vineyards and cliffside lemon groves.

The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is in the spring and fall, specifically May and September.

Nestling in one of the most beautiful corners of the Amalfi Coast, Hotel Santa Caterina is well-known, and loved, for its beach club. The late 19th-century liberty-style villa has a seawater pool and a view from the lofty rock face it sits on that is second to none. Newcomer Borgo Santandrea is another standout spot, perched high in the cliffs and built into the rock face overlooking the sea. All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and sea views, but for an extra special stay request an infinity-pool option. For more options, see our pick of the best hotels on the Amalfi Coast .

Krabi Thailand

3. Krabi, Thailand

Beloved by party-goers and gap year students, Thailand can end up often being overlooked as a honeymoon destination, but Krabi, at the tail end of the west coast, tends to be less crowded, making it ideal for couples after a taste of The Land of Smiles’ calmer side. Blue waters lap at grass-covered limestone stacks just offshore, best viewed via private boat tour, or from the secluded beaches that pepper the area. Fill days here with tours through Krabi’s ethereal mangroves, scuba diving around the coral reef and lethargic afternoons around the pool or on the sands.

The weather is most even between December and March, with the latter being the hottest month here.

One of Thailand’s most luxurious hotels,  Phulay Bay, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve sprawls across a natural sanctuary of tropical gardens, manicured lawns and intimate private dining and relaxation spots.

There's something so utterly captivating about Greece and the Greek islands . The simple beauty, the rich history and mythology, the scrubby wildernesses scented with wildflowers, the perfect clash of blue and white. All that light! Dazzling on little whitewashed church domes and fishermen's cottages built into the rock. And the unbelievable blue of the sea and the skies in long, hot summers that seem to last most of the year.

How remote do you want to be? Hundreds of islands, their names like gods and monsters – the Cyclades, the Ionians; Thassos and Zakinthos and Spetses - each with their own distinct character. One of the most photogenic of them is Santorini , a honeymooner's paradise. It is absurdly beautiful, but thanks to the natural amphitheatre of its caldera, anyone staying in the whitewashed villages that tumble down its steep hillsides gets an uninterrupted view of the volcano and the deepest blue sea. At sunset the setting sun paints the villages pink and honey-gold.

Spring or early summer will be sunny without too many crowds, while most of the islands stay warm well into autumn, too.

One of Paros' more recent additions, Summer Senses Luxury Resort , is a get-away-from-it-all haven where rooms range from deluxe hideouts to suites with private pools. On Santorini, each villa at Andronis Arcadia has its own private balcony and pool. F Zeen on Kefalonia is an earthy adult-only retreat with a wellness focus. There are plenty more options – see more on our guide to the best Greek Island hotels .

5. Bali, Indonesia

Land of pirates, and dragons, of a million islands, misty, mythical mountainous stacks. Land, too, of some of the most beautiful places to stay in the world – and most of them are on Bali. It seems almost unfair, just how many heavenly hotels Bali has; and still more keep opening. Those deep-green infinity pools, jungle-cloaked and inviting, so classy after all that ubiquitous turquoise.

Yet however many five-star hotels open up, Bali is no homogenized island resort. It's a magical, spiritual place, which manages to retain its authenticity and culture, as well as its unspoilt beaches and green tropical landscapes. And there are places to stay for all budgets from backpacker beach-huts (full-moon parties can be found) to super-sexy designer retreats.

Dry season is April to September, although July and August are the busiest months. A visit in spring or autumn will be quieter.

Como Shambhala Estate is the most relaxing spa in Bali's hinterland. For a jungle stay, Capella Ubud is a luxe tented camp where the 22 one-bedroom suites have sprawling outdoor decks and private plunge pools. At Bulgari Resort Bali in Uluwatu, all 59 villas come with private plunge pools, and everything is as splendid as you could expect from a brand known for its diamonds and gold. For more, see our roundup of the best hotels in Bali .

6. Scotland

From June to August , when Santorini and St Lucia are swarming with brides hot in their frothy frocks, when every terrace in Venice and Ravello is clinking with newlyweds, Scotland might very well be the smart choice for honeymooners.

True, Edinburgh in August is full of festival mayhem. But beyond the capital: miles and mountainous miles of astoundingly beautiful landscapes, some of Britain's loveliest beaches – on sunny days compared to those of the Caribbean – and the sweet rivers and murmuring streams of Burns's love poems brought to life. And how many places in the world are just as spectacular in winter, even while stormclouds roll across gigantic skies?

In August, when the weather is fair for exploring.

Stay at the arty Fife Arms in Braemar, or maybe Perthshire's Gleneagles , the most famous hotel in Scotland .

Comporta

7. Comporta, Portugal

Chic and discreet, Comporta is the back-to-nature, beach-shack type of exclusive: a pristine idyll that’s drawn everyone from Louboutin to Sarkozy. It is only an hour’s drive from Lisbon , on Portugal ’s blustery west coast, and the strict preservation laws and stewardship by an elite banking group have been key to keeping it spotless and secluded. Singular scenery ranges across bright-green rice fields, scented cork forests and 12km of thrillingly elemental beaches, all icing-sugar sand and thundering surf. Endlessly compared to pre-fame Ibiza or St Tropez, it’s in fact far less glitzy – and better for it. Kick off your flip-flops for sunset dining at a handful of unshowy restaurants on sun-bleached boardwalks, icy jugs of white sangria aside fresh, garlic-steeped clams and coriander-spiked local arroz.

Still warm but less crowded in shoulder seasons: April to May or September to October.

At Quinta da Comporta , where bedrooms have a beach-house feel and the spa is a standout.

Aerial view of Bora Bora island French Polynesia

8. Bora Bora

Bora Bora in French Polynesia is well-known for its vast volcanic views, aquamarine lagoons and sieved-flour sand. Adding to the tropical bundle are the luxurious overwater villas that pepper the perimeter of the island , just offshore, and complete the textbook honeymoon image. In short, it’s a tried-and-tested formula that’s proved itself perfect for couples basking in the post-wedding glow (and fatigue).

Away from the crowds of other traditional honeymoon destinations such as Hawaii and the Caribbean, resorts here favour those on post-nuptial getaways and are known for pulling out all the stops. Expect private island picnics, intimate snorkelling excursions and elaborate spa packages.

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, Bora Bora is surrounded by sand-fringed Motus (islets) and a turquoise lagoon protected by a coral reef, making it a prime spot for scuba diving . There are no direct flights to Bora Bora from the UK, but, with the most popular stopover en route being Los Angeles , see it as an opportunity to tack some green-juice-wielding Hollywood glamour onto your trip.

The best time to go to Bora Bora is between November and April, when temperatures are still warm. The high season runs from May to October, and though rain showers become less frequent during this time, the number of visitors swell and rates rise.

The Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is loved by travellers the world over for its unrivalled collection of overwater bungalow suites, beachfront villas and fine dining options. It can also claim fame as the backdrop for several films over the past few decades.

Tokyo

9. Tokyo, Japan

Call it the capital of good taste. Foodies, drinks snobs, design buffs and culture nuts: you’ve found Shangri-La. More Michelin stars than any other city. (Yep, Paris comes second – and by a stretch.) Architecture doubles for art, from those all-glass Prada and Dior stores to Tadao Ando’s minimalist-concrete shopping mall, Omotesando Hills. Mixologists blend craft cocktails with laser precision at intimate 10-seater bars; sumo wrestlers scuffle in stadiums and kabuki performers peacock around theatres. Narrow back streets bristle with slow-drip coffee bars, indie fashion boutiques, traditional tatami workshops and eighth-generation noodle counters. Everything artisanal, long before it was cool. And then, when that’s quite enough sophistication, neon-soaked thoroughfares thrum with restaurants staffed by robots and cafés filled with goats.

Sunny days and autumn colours in October and November lend a certain romance.

Aman Tokyo is the most spoiling stay in the city.

Grenada Caribbean

10. Grenada, Caribbean

Though misleading to still refer to Grenada as the Caribbean’s best-kept secret, it’s fair to say that the island still enjoys a more comfortable flow of tourists than some of its other, busier siblings. The tiny island – known as the Spice Isle of the Caribbean – boasts a landscape that seems to outweigh its size in terms of sheer diversity, mixing black and white sand beaches with jungle-clad waterfalls and a singular city, St. George’s, with an 18th-century fort that looks out across the waters of St. George’s Bay. Many honeymooners opt to sail around the island, stopping off at its various beaches and fishing villages.

To avoid the rainy season, visit between mid-December and mid-April.

Though not a budget option by any stretch of the imagination,  Spice Island Beach Resort  is the creme-de-la-creme of the island’s hotel scene. Fringing the sands of Grand Anse and its white-washed, low-rise buildings peppered among seagrapes, the property is smart yet unpretentious and airy.

Rome Italy

11. Rome, Italy

A long beloved backdrop for proposals, the city of Rome is also a hit with culture-loving couples and food-fixated honeymooners alike. Combining 28 centuries of rich history - from world-renowned architecture (including the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain) to priceless paintings - with sophisticated piazzas, centuries-old trattorias and photo opportunities at every turn. Known as the Eternal City, the centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the iconic Pantheon and Roman Forum, as well as the Vatican. Private tours of the grandest sites here are an easy way to add an extra dose of intimacy to the bustling city experience so too are the myriad cooking masterclasses that can be booked for two.

The best time to visit Rome is between October and April, though the temperature can fluctuate, the crowds have dissipated and finding a good deal is much easier.

A member of the world-renowned Rocco Forte Hotel Group, the  Hotel de la Ville  sits at the top of the Spanish Steps and envelopes its guests in a mix of 17th and 18th-century inspired decor, along with achingly cool modern touches, like the sprawling spa and open-air lounges and bars.

12. Costa Rica

Known for its steamy cloud forests, gorgeous surf beaches and multicoloured wildlife, this country is the stuff of travel legend. Those looking to indulge should look no further than Peninsula Papagayo. Think of it as your own exclusive corner of Costa Rica: 21 powder-soft beaches, eight miles of scenic sea cliffs and 600 square miles of protected rainforest and mangroves to explore. There’s also a team of expert naturalists to help guests tailor adventures into the wilderness, from paddling through bioluminescent plankton to mountain-biking rainforest trails. Swiftly followed by some serious poolside cabana time, of course – you wouldn’t want to work up too much of a sweat.

January and February fall comfortably within the dry season, and all but guarantee perfect beach weather.

Some of the best hotels in Costa Rica are eco-friendly stays. We love Aguas Claras in Puerto Viejo, a boutique bolthole with Victorian-style bungalows and a tiny beach club. For a dreamy melt-into-the-horizon pool scene, check in to Kura in Uvita.

13. Mauritius

Mauritius is the Indian Ocean paradise with a pulse. No fear of getting bored here; this spice island has incredible national parks; its interior soars up into mountain ranges, where tropical forests harbour amazing wildlife; and it has an astonishingly rich coastline and marine parks to explore, by boat or underwater (watersports are quite the thing here). The neighbouring islands of Réunion and Rodrigues offer their own riches – and feel off-the-beaten-track even by Mauritian standards; while hundreds of tiny islets dotted around the coastlines three have breathtaking scenery

It's not just about the beaches, but the beaches are superb. And if that's the kind of holiday you want – to lie on a cabana and be handed cocktails on the hour, every – Mauritius is the place for it. Many beachfront resorts here tend towards high-octane glamour; but it is also possible to find under-the-radar, more laid-back places to stay to suit independent travellers.

June-September. The cool winter, when temperatures average around a balmy 20ºC, runs through June, July, August, September. Perfect for a post-summer-wedding de-stress.

Maradiva offers the ultimate less-is-more escape where roomy pool villa dwellings are wonderfully discreet and the beachside location is one of the best. Foodie couples should book into One&Only Le Saint Géran , while LUX* Grand Baie is beloved for its sun-drenched high glamour. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Mauritius .

Paris France

14. Paris, France

We often think of a honeymoon destination as a far-flung place, but it doesn’t need to be. Sometimes, all the romance and downtime you need is just a short Eurostar trip away. Enter: Paris , a city for lovers, where cafés spill out onto pavements, nestled in the profile of imposing architecture, and cobblestone streets lead to chic boutiques and a sparkling evening scene. A forever favourite of poets, songwriters, artists and, of course, the hopelessly in love, it makes the perfect post-wedding stop-off for couples who are either short on time or keen to minimise the air miles.

A trip between October and April offers both balmy climes and fewer crowds.

The former address of a certain Oscar Wilde before his death (which, yes, took place in one of the rooms here if you’re wondering),  L’Hôtel  has often dubbed the most romantic hotel in Paris. Arranged around a circular atrium, the rooms and suites are decadent but comfortable and the spa and pool lend themselves to ultimate relaxation in the midst of the city’s buzz.

Napa Valley Vineyards and mountains.

15. Napa Valley, California, USA

Straying from the traditional biscuit-hued beaches of a more ‘traditional’ honeymoon, Napa Valley ties together a European feel with Californian climes and a bucolic pace. Known for its hundreds of hillside vineyards, the wine country of the USA is a food-focused getaway that can easily be paired with the urban buzz of San Francisco or the rugged expanse of the Big Sur.

And when you’re not sipping world-class Sauvignon Blanc (the region is famous for it) with views across the valley, there are a string of enchanting towns to meander at leisure, including Calistoga (well-known for its hot springs and mud baths) and St. Helena (home to Beringer Vineyard – considered the oldest continually operating winery in the Valley).

In the middle sits Yountville, famed for its high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants , while a more low-key dining experience can be enjoyed at Oxbow Public Market in Downtown Napa itself.

The best time to visit Napa is August through October or March through May.

A place that feels as though it was plucked straight from the heart of rural France and dropped into the middle of the dramatic Californian landscape, the five-star Auberge du Soleil is an adults-only hotel nestled within a terraced, sun-kissed hillside.

16. Finland

If you’re more about hunkering down by the fire than lolling around at the pool, a romantic winter-weather adventure in Finnish Lapland could be for you. The Finns’ national pastime of spa and sauna also gives honeymooners ample opportunities to get cosy. Kakslauttanen’s log cabins have private hot tubs for getting steamy in an otherwise frigid forest; just imagine clinking glasses of Champagne as the warm fog roils around you under a crystal-clear night sky. Add to that moonlit sledge rides, crackling fires and frozen landscapes, and suddenly that tropical-island trip seems basic.

Perhaps surprisingly, autumn and spring are the most active seasons for Northern Lights activity in Finnish Lapland – and, owing to the region’s position above the Arctic Circle, visiting outside of winter doesn’t mean missing out on the snow. It does, however, mean skipping the Christmas crowds. The very clearest skies can be banked on in March.

The region offers no end of luxurious ways to spot the Northern Lights without leaving bed: be that from a glass igloo at Kakslauttanen , or from Hotel Iso-Syöte ’s two-storey Eagle View Suite, with its wraparound glass walls and roof.

St Lucia The Pitons tower above Soufriere beach on the Caribbean island of St Lucia as fishing boats lay on the beach

17. St Lucia

St Lucia and its sky-piercing Pitons have long been a favourite of honeymooners looking to pair bare-foot luxury with the opportunity to explore a rich tapestry of history and culture. Dive sites are teeming with marine life, natural harbours (like that of Marigot Bay) carved into the island create ample opportunity for wonder and the hiking is second-to-none (Trails in the interior rainforest lead to waterfalls like the 15m-high Toraille, which pours over a cliff into a garden). Castries, the lively capital, has an eternally bustling market and Pigeon Island, now no longer estranged from the mainland, will enchant history lovers with its tales of the colonial era and fort remains.

The best time to visit Saint Lucia is between February and May, when rain showers are almost non-existent.

Sugar Beach sits on a former sugar plantation sandwiched between the Pitons and certainly wins the award for the most immersed hotel on the island. A forest spa with treehouse treatment gazebos completes the romantic experience. For more inspiration, see our edit of the best hotels in St Lucia .

Oualidia Morocco

18. Oualidia, Morocco’s Western Coast

Though Morocco is perhaps best known for its fourth largest city, Marrakesh, and their surrounding Atlas mountains, away from the sensory overload of the bustling markets and town squares here, the quieter west coast area of Oualidia is ideal for those seeking a laid-back honeymoon with a dose of culture. Visitors delight in outdoor activities, from surfing or swimming in the saltwater lagoon to quad biking, all surrounded by pink flamingos and oyster farms.

The best time to visit Morocco is September-November or March-April.

A Moorish fortress with sustainability at its heart, they don’t come much more exclusive than  La Sultana Oualidia , made up of 12 unique bedrooms and suites. As well as endeavouring to be as eco-friendly as possible in its design and daily workings, the property runs a programme of tours and initiatives to immerse guests in their ethos, too - their Bird Safari is only one such example.

Tahiti

Soaring peaks, tranquil lagoons and crystalline waters have drawn honeymooners to Tahiti’s South Pacific shores for years. More remote than islands of similar stature, the off-grid appeal helps to add to the feeling of being fully immersed in island life. Shaped like a figure of eight (or an infinity symbol if you want to get romantic, which of course we do), Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia, with black-sand beaches and two extinct volcanoes among its charming collection of rugged scenery. Though relatively unexplored by British tourists, those who do venture here rave about Papenoo Valley, in the heart of the island, with its luxuriant jungles and string of waterfalls, perfect for cooling off in after a warm-weather hike.

The best time to visit Tahiti is between June and August when the climate is at its driest and the weather is balmy.

WHhere to stay

Not all hotels can boast a natural aquarium, but the InterContinental Tahiti Resort can. With lush gardens, views across the volcanic peaks of Moorea Island and an overwater gourmet restaurant, this five-star hotel is a safe pair of hands for any couple looking to push the boat out.

20. Vienna, Austria

The Austrian capital is the ultimate in cultured luxury; an urban honeymoon destination steeped in old-world romance. This is a place for waltzing across shining marble, with neoclassical palaces lining leafy boulevards, opulent Renaissance-style opera houses and coffee shops that are less salvaged wood, more crystal chandeliers. It’s strolling arm-in-arm by the Danube and stealing kisses in stately courtyards. Where you might spend your days floating around art galleries and evenings hogging the best seats at the ballet. Better still, the city has its own urban vineyards, where you can try a crisp white among the vine rows, with views stretching across Gothic cathedrals and imperial residences to the river.

September is an excellent time to enjoy the wine harvest, paired with warm temperatures in the 20s.

At newcomer Rosewood Vienna in the heart of Vienna’s 1st district, the grandest opening in the city in almost a decade.

21. Los Cabos, Mexico

Just an extra little nudge away from the United States, Mexico is a long-loved honeymoon destination in its entirety. However, Los Cabos , located on the very tip of the Baja California Peninsula, is a particularly entrancing stop for recently-espoused lovers. Between December and March, whale watching is firmly on the agenda, though the rich tapestry of marine life here is on hand all year-round (think: sea lions, turtles and myriad tropical fish). The area comprises two old towns, San Lucas and San José del Cabo, linked by a 32km corridor of beach-front properties and championship golf courses. Secluded? No. Romantic? Yes.

The best time to visit Los Cabos is from May to June, and after October once the bigger rain showers have passed.

The Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal has continually cropped up in our Conde Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards, and it’s easy to see why. Mediterranean village vibes, paired with a rustic beach and elevated Mexican details combine to create a truly heady atmosphere.

22. Mallorca, Spain

This Balearic beauty’s more glamorous side has always been an A-lister secret – it’s the sort of place you’ll find Kate Moss sipping sangria in a honey-hued, stone-hewn hilltop village, or Michael Douglas wandering his vineyard on a remote coastal cliffside, and all at a suitably refined distance from the better-known, built-up resorts. A honeymoon here still promises glorious seclusion: Mallorca has more than 260 beaches, many of them tucked into secret coves, so you and your amor are all but guaranteed a private roll-around in the surf. Plus, along with the dreamy scenery – sweeping white-sand crescents, pine-peppered cliffs, golden citadels – there are some seriously out-of-this-world hotels.

Avoid the stiflingly hot and busy summer months and opt for the serene seclusion of shoulder season: May and September temperatures average around 22°C.

Finca Serena , a white-washed spa sanctuary, is spread across 40 hectares of orchards and farmland; Cap Rocat , a former fortress turned private retreat, is set on the coast; and Predi Son Jaumell, a forested 16th-century estate, has a Michelin-starred restaurant, aromatic gardens and yoga classes. See our guide to the best hotels in Mallorca for more.

St. Kitts Looking at a touristic bay from up above a mountain in StKitts Nevis.

23. St. Kitts

When it comes to honeymoon destinations, St. Kitts (and her sister island, Nevis ) is often overlooked in favour of some of the Caribbean’s more eminent islands, offering those who choose to shun some of the bigger names a quieter, often more affordable, getaway. The island’s laid-back vibe is immediately infectious and the rainforest-coated mountains invite immersive day trips that lead visitors along a path that feels much less trodden.

Famous for its white, grey, and black sand beaches and volcanic terrain that offers memorable hiking scenery, St. Kitts is also home to freshwater pools for forest bathing and Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, which was built in the 18th century and has panoramic Caribbean views.

The best time to visit St. Kitts is between May and June, when hotels lower their rates. However, during peak season – December to April – the island hosts a six-week carnival.

The Park Hyatt St. Kitts Christophe Harbour on Banana Bay houses spacious rooms and suites (ideal if you don’t plan on stepping outside it very much), contemporary architecture and unobstructed views across the Caribbean Sea.

Jamaika Region Montego Bay Rafting Village Martha Brae river bamboo rafts

24. Jamaica

Known as the ‘birthplace of reggae,’ a honeymoon in Jamaica is certainly not going to be a quiet one. But in place of a sleepy atmosphere is a vibrant tapestry that envelops travellers in a landscape that is just as colourful and rich as its culture. Tree-cloaked mountains, vast rainforests, meandering rivers and fish-fringed reefs are all open to exploration during your time here, while the manmade side, with many historic plantations, where you can sample tropical fruits and tour the grand great houses, offering its perspective of the island. It’s worth touring around during your trip as each area offers its take on island life: lively Montego Bay (the country’s capital city) is one of the most popular resort towns, while Ocho Rios is the island's major port, and Negril is famous for its long, languishing beach, trimmed by coconut palms.

The best time to visit Jamaica is from November to early December — hurricane season has ended, and the hotels and restaurants are all open, but you'll be able to enjoy the island without the high volume of visitors that arrive in mid-December.

The Trident Hotel sits just outside of Port Antonio on Jamaica’s wilder Northeastern coast and offers villa-only accommodation, an intimate feel and a private, protected lagoon just beyond your infinity pool.

25. Deplar Farm, Iceland

Yes, yes, Iceland is the destination du jour – the number of visitors has rocketed threefold in the past few years. But you won’t see many folks in the far north’s Troll Peninsula . A rugged hinterland of emerald valleys, snow-cloaked mountains and chilled teal waters, it’s just as otherworldly as it sounds. Deplar Farm is the isolated, high-spec lodge at the heart of it: formerly an actual farm and now a 13-suite stunner with a living grass-covered roof, indoor-outdoor geothermal pool (a hell of a place to see the Northern Lights) and a spa with isopod flotation tanks, it offers the ultimate in de-stressing calm. But the end-of-the-world epicness isn’t just for looking at – this adventure is hands-on. Heli-skiing offers runs that literally no one on Earth has skied before, stretching from peak to sea; summertime spells fat-biking untouched mountain trails. Honeymooning on a remote island? Ha. Deplar Farm is another planet.

You're most likely to see the Northern Lights between October and February.

At Deplar Farm, of course – a blow-the-budget, once-in-a-lifetime escape.

Two Wild Pink Flamingos on a Caribbean Beach

For those yearning to be marooned on a desert island but who perhaps can’t quite hack an off-grid lifestyle, Aruba is the ideal honeymoon destination. Having long-lured loved-up travellers to its clear jade waters, the Caribbean islet is within easy reach of the United States, enjoys more predictable weather than its neighbours and, due to the year-round arid climate, offers crystal clear viewing conditions underwater (perfect for anyone wanting to explore the peppering of shipwrecks that lie just offshore). UTV tours are popular here, often involving an opportunity for cliff-diving as you explore the more rocky rubble of the island’s Northeastern side, while animal-lovers will enjoy the focus on caring for nature here, from the butterfly farm to the animal sanctuary.

The best time to visit Aruba is between April and August when the island hits a sweet spot of more affordable rates paired with good weather.

The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba offers, among a smorgasbord of luxury amenities, direct access to a private pristine beach, an adults-only pool and an expansive spa that puts focus on using indigenous ingredients like aloe.

Beach and Twelve Apostles mountain in Camps Bay near Cape Town in South Africa.

27. South Africa

A popular destination to mix and match with one of the sleepier Indian Ocean Islands, South Africa merits inclusion on our best honeymoon destinations list all on its own. Known worldwide for its Big Game safaris (hello, eco-friendly lodges and infinity pools that double as water holes for the surrounding wildlife), the rest of the country is equally as fascinating, from the bustling V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, lorded over by the flat-topped Table Mountain, to the vine-woven valleys of the Winelands onto the penguin spotting at Boulders Bay (though colonies can be found from southern Namibia around the South African coast to Port Elizabeth). Many honeymooners hire a car, or better yet, a private tour guide, and head down to the Garden Route or Route 62 along the Western Cape.

The best time to visit South Africa is from May to September, especially if you plan to head out on safari, as the cooler winter months in the northern regions conjure ideal conditions for viewing big game.

Though the country offers myriad privately-owned guest houses and lodges that all boast their unique charm, the One&Only Cape Town is somewhat of an institution among honeymooners here. Holding a prime position on the city’s lively harbourside, the hotel is framed by the majestic peak of Table Mountain, which makes for pretty magical viewing at sundown.

28. Cartagena, Colombia

Time was Colombia would have been a less obvious honeymoon destination. But Caribbean-side Cartagena ’s deep-rooted romance has proven irresistible, helping tourism to grow more than an incredible 300 per cent in the past 12 years. The old, walled town woos with sun-yellow colonial villas and cathedrals, balconies with billowing bougainvillea, and slow ambles through cobbled streets to arcaded squares. But it also bubbles with a contemporary energy, brought by freshly experimental kitchens (now rivalling Lima ’s), and a savvy fashion crowd drawn to the colourful brew of old and new. Beyond the old-town walls, glitzy Bocagrande beckons with swimming beaches and upscale bistros; at Donjuán, chef Juan Felipe Camacho fuses Basque and Colombian flavours, influenced by years at Michelin-starred San Sebastian restaurants. (President Juan Manuel Santos is a vocal fan.) Things get steamier still in late-night salsa bars, or an hour’s boat ride away at the protected Rosario Islands – ideal for a castaway canoodle.

29. Slovenia

Verdant wine regions and Venetian villages; fairy-tale castles and sparkling marinas: romance is sewn into Slovenia’s fabric – you can even cycle a heart-shaped road in its Špičnik winelands. The country’s name has ‘love’ in it, for goodness sake. Compact enough to explore widely, yet varied enough to thrill at every turn, Slovenia has been hailed the best of Europe in miniature, with its snow-capped mountains, Adriatic coastlines, cobbled old towns and teal-green Alpine lakes. But this enchanted land won’t remain the continent’s best-kept secret: its selection as the European Region of Gastronomy 2021 speaks to a new excitement buzzing around the farm-to-table food scene. A raft of freshly sophisticated offerings such as Pikol Lake Village, where floating wooden villas sit amid the Brda vineyards and are served by a dedicated Michelin-approved restaurant, are opening too. When it’s time to turn in, you can go big at Hotel Gredič , a castle with a Champagne temple, or understated at Hiša Franko , where Hemingway wrote A Farewell to Arms and renowned Slovenian chef Ana Ros has her restaurant.

Autumn brings the harvest – ideal for food and wine fans – and vibrant colours.

Go off-the-charts indulgent at Chocolate Village for riverside glamping on the site of an organic chocolate factory. Or – it’s your honeymoon, after all – all three.

30. The Seychelles

The Seychelles archipelago is the ultimate castaway-island fantasy. It's out-of-this-world beautiful, the archetypal Indian Ocean paradise: palm-fringed beaches shelving gently into a dreamy-turquoise sea. And there's a romantic wildness to it which certain others lack; the islands of the Seychelles are less groomed; there's adventure to be had and curious wildlife – a wildlife so rich it is comparable to the Galápagos – to be found among its virgin forest and coral reefs. It's not hard to happen upon a beach where you can leave the first pairs of meandering tracks in the powder-white sand.

May to October - perfectly timed for the wedding season - when the trade winds blow in refreshingly cool, dry weather. Temperatures are fairly constant year-round at 24-31ºC, though certain islands have their own microclimates, so check first.

Stay at North Island , the super-natural, ultra-private island where William and Kate (reportedly) spent their honeymoon. Or on Six Senses Zil Pasyon , where the villas are the closest thing to super-smart, minimalist tree-houses. See our guide to the best Seychelles hotels for more.

Jerusalem Israel

31. Jerusalem, Israel

Jerusalem’s atmospheric old town is a melting pot of cultures, religions, sights, sounds and vibrant colours, and one that abounds in romance. Here, key religious sites like the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the famous Western Wall, mix with market stalls selling everything from clay crockery to clutch bags, vibrant spices to slices of pizza, and people from all over the world. Outside of the city’s old walls, authentic Middle Eastern restaurants, a plethora of museums and art fairs can be found, as well as traditional shisha bars and ample walking opportunities.

April - May and October - November are ideal times to visit, these months are outside of peak periods but still enjoy warm weather.

One of Israel’s most famous hotels, with an impressive former guest list (think everyone from Bono to Richard Nixon), the  King David combines grand interiors with panoramic views across the old city and the knowledge that you are walking in some pretty prestigious footsteps.

Aerial view of Wadigi and Malolo islands Malolo reef Mamanucas islands Fiji

32. French Polynesia

Surely there is nowhere more exotic and far-flung than Polynesia, the islands of the South Seas. Thousands of miles from anywhere, Fiji is a castaway fantasy: empty beaches washed by spectacular surf, waterfalls splashing into deep green pools in the jungle, blue lagoons where couples can swim alone amid shoals of rainbow-coloured fish – Blue Lagoon was actually filmed here, as was Cast Away and, less romantically, Shipwrecked . But those who wash up here get a warm welcome, smiley locals proffering hibiscus flowers.

Fiji is made up of hundreds of islands, and no small number of them have been turned into private-island resorts. Laid-on luxury, no-expense-spared resorts, or stylish eco-lodges where nature is king - and the best are a mix of both. Set sail for a dreamy honeymoon with a conscience.

May-November. Fiji has a warm and wet tropical climate all year round, though from May until November the temperatures drop and there is less rain.

For the ultimate castaway adventure, stay at The Brando, French Polynesia , an elegant, low-impact hideout.

If you’re looking for something really unique, a honeymoon in this Himalayan hermit kingdom won’t disappoint. The tiny nation of Bhutan is perhaps best known for keeping the outside world at bay – thank the hefty daily tariff the government levies on foreign visitors – and the result is a literal breath of fresh air: a land of pristine peaks, rushing rivers and mysterious, forest-cloaked valleys. Where getting away from it all might entail a trek to the famously precipitous Tiger’s Nest Monastery, followed by a soak in a Himalaya-facing plunge pool. A serene sanctuary of incense and gongs; mindfulness and monks.

October is the best time of year to visit, with cool mountain air and clear skies offering ideal conditions for exploring the Himalayas.

The sublimest stay for couples here is undoubtedly Six Senses Bhutan . A series of five luxury lodges spread across the country’s most spectacular landscapes, it offers unparalleled views, purifying spa treatments and incredible itineraries where private guides take you hiking and biking into the heart of this special country, connecting with communities as much as the land.

34. Zanzibar

The spice islands of Tanzania – Zanzibar, Pemba, Chole, Mafia – are the stuff of fantasy. Extraordinarily clear, blue waters and remote white-sand beaches, empty but for a salt-harvesting local in the distance, perhaps; or a single pair of sunloungers set out just for you.

Here you can really go off-radar. And these islands are but drops in the ocean compared with the vast wildernesses of the rest of the country. Tanzania is a giraffe's head and shoulders above other countries when it comes to wildlife and landscapes: the highest mountains; the greatest lakes; a quarter of it given over to national parks and game reserves, thrumming with great numbers of birds and beasts.

So it's no wonder that the bush-and-beach honeymoon is becoming increasingly popular - two weeks or more, split between two or more of Tanzania's extraordinary lodges, from the plains to the coast. Two out-of-this-world honeymoons in one.

July to March. Avoid the rainy season from April to June.

Check into Zuri Zanzibar for a socially-aware, blissed out beach break.

Scenic view of Nyhavn pier with color buildings ships yachts and other boats in the Old Town of Copenhagen Denmark.

35. Copenhagen, Denmark

Denmark’s capital city is a rich smorgasbord of cultures, cutting-edge design has woven itself around historical landmarks, modern culture bubbles around grand castles and hygge hideaways are tucked away behind bustling cobbled streets. In short, this is a honeymoon destination where you’d be hard-pressed not to find a slice of society that feels synonymous with your own values and interests. Dine out on Michelin-starred food at one of the 15 star-awarded eateries peppered around the Danish hotspot, explore the regal history of the land at Rosenborg Castle – built in 1601 – or immerse yourself in a real local pastime, diving into the refreshing harbour waters before spending the rest of the morning lazing around on the docks with a drink.

When to go: From June to August, you can expect long, bright days and nights, low humidity and comfortably warm temperatures.

Where to stay: The eco-savvy love birds among us have likely already heard of the cutting-edge hotel Manon Les Suites . A former factory, the space is now home to six floors of suites, each with its own balcony, all centred around a courtyard. The piste-de-resistance here? The indoor pool, seemingly a climate all of its own, encircled by tropical greenery and day beds.

Houses in a small village are dwarfed by the looming presence of a volcanic mountain Rwanda

A firm favourite of animal lovers and those looking to steer away from more traditional honeymoon destinations, Rwanda’s wildlife offering is second to none. And the primary draw here? Gorilla trekking . Visitors can get within a few feet of these giant beasts as they hike through the volcanic landscape of the National Parks. Newlyweds can also head out to see lion pride and the rare black rhino, as well as take part in nighttime safaris to see the animal kingdom in a different, dwindling light.

When to go: The best time to visit Rwanda, both in terms of weather and wildlife spotting chances, is during the dry period from June to September.

Where to stay: You’ve likely seen photos of Bisate Lodge , one of Rwanda’s most luxurious resorts, without even knowing it, as the award-winning lodge has been singled out for its sustainable (and stunning) ethereal pods, which seem to rise naturally out of the rainforest. Like giant birds’ nests tucked into the trees, the Forest Villas offer a well-balanced blend of pampering and trekking, all while naturally immersed in the landscape.

37. The French Riviera

Oozing glamour, there is something of a honeymoon on the French Riviera that whispers syrupy sweetness in your ear, suggesting romance around every intimate corner. From well-documented harbourfront restaurants to lesser-known enclaves, renting an open-top car and weaving your way through Cannes toward Menton, stopping at the enchanting towns and cities on the way is the best way to cover as much ground as possible. Popular Antibes, an old town enclosed by 16th-century ramparts with the draw of its distinctively star-shaped Fort Carré is a good option for history buffs, while extroverted Monte-Carlo – home to the world-famous Place du Casino and the Boulevard des Moulins – has a name which precedes it. It’s all enchanting from start to finish.

When to go: May through to early July is the best time to visit to enjoy warm weather without the summer crowds.

Where to stay: Perched above the rocky coast of Cap Ferrat, Grand Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat , is protected from the sea winds by 14 acres of faultlessly groomed gardens. Everything here can be personalised, from private, candlelit dining amid the pines to in-room spa treatments, making it a popular choice for honeymooners looking for a unique luxe experience.

Lounge chairs and umbrella on white sand beach

38. Turks and Caicos

Though little in the Caribbean can be classed as a ‘secret’, in honeymoon terms, Turks and Caicos probably comes the closest. Widely believed to be two islands – ‘Turks’ and ‘Caicos’ – it is actually an archipelago of 40 low-lying, coral-connected islands. Sparsely populated, the idea of ‘alone time’ is easily achievable here, and boat excursions, nature walks and leisurely days spent stretched out on one of the swathes of honey-hued sands are the norm. The waters here are also a diver’s paradise, with the 14-mile barrier reef of Providenciales’s north shore or the dramatic underwater wall stretching some 2,000 metres off the shore of Grand Turk just two of the highlights.

When to go: Though Turks and Caicos merits a visit all year round, the warmest, driest weather can be found between December and March.

Where to stay: Amanyara , built on the rocky coves of Providenciales, encircled by tropical forest and overlooking the coral reefs of Point Marine National Park, feels entirely detached from the rest of the world. The price tag can be eye-watering but so too is the sheer natural beauty around which the luxe resort has immersed itself, and the level of personalised service here is second to none. Villas are vast, many with sweeping private pools, the wellness offering is cutting edge and the daily diving sessions (included in your stay) a real highlight.

Montana USA

39. Montana, USA

Definitely a consideration for lovebirds who are keen to not take their honeymoon lying down – quite literally – Montana offers a plethora of adrenaline-activating activities, from canoeing down the Yellowstone River and carving lines down the slopes of Big Sky to canyon treks and forest camping. And top of many mooners’ Montana must-dos? A trip through the arresting scenery of the 52-mile highway, which winds into Glacier National Park, which crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. And if you’re keen to cover more ground, visitors to Montana often couple it with a trip to Salt Lake City, Seattle or Denver, with daily flights scheduled.

When to go: Montana is a year-round destination, but the weather (and the crowds) are certainly mellower during September, though keen skiers are more likely to find the power quality they’re after in February or March.

Where to stay: No trip to Montana would be fully authentic without staying at one of the romantic lodges peppered throughout the varied terrain, and Sage Lodge – along the banks of the Yellowstone River – is one of the best. This luxe resort is just five miles from Camel Discovery and six miles from Chico Peak.

Each hotel is located a five to 10-minute drive away from the islands’ most popular spots and offers stunning sunset views and delicious, regionally-informed fine dining. Plus, many of the luxury suites have their own private pools for couples looking to balance alone time with the excitement of the bustling islands. Couples getting married in the Northeast need not go far to enjoy a relaxing postnuptial vacation. If you’re hosting a New York City celebration, consider staying a night or two at the Ritz Carlton New York Central Park to enjoy unparalleled views of the park and a La Prairie spa treatment before jetting off to a distant honeymoon destination. Another excellent mini-moon option is the Auberge Collection’s idyllic Mayflower Inn & Spa in Connecticut, with charming interiors by Celerie Kemble, farm-to-table dining, and incredible grounds that are ready for both lazy and active summer activities—all ideal for some romantic R&R. Of course, honeymooners should absolutely take advantage of the inn’s beautiful spa retreat by The Well with its state-of-the-art facilities, holistic treatments, and dreamy design.

If the lush jungle and beaches of Bali have always called to you as your dream honeymoon destination, it’s best to book your trip during the dry season from May to October. Luxury comes at a lower price on the island, so an incredible experience awaits no matter your budget. If you wish to splurge on a clifftop contemporary retreat along the coast, book a stay at the Alila Uluwatu . Each villa is equipped with numerous amenities and private pools, while the top-tier service can be tailored to your taste from “discrete” to “indulgent.” If you prefer an escape immersed in the jungle, Como Shambhala Estate is the perfect resort to let you and your new spouse focus on wellness and relaxation.

June is one of the best times to embrace la dolce vita in Italy . With temperatures ranging from the 60s to 80s, honeymooners can explore the storied museums, vineyards, and coastlines before the crowds and humidity increase in July and August. Honeymooners who have already toured the historic cities of Rome , Florence, and Venice can avoid the rush of summer tourism and take advantage of the relaxing retreats throughout the country. If you’re looking for a White Lotus -inspired vacation (without the drama, of course), take a trip to Taormina in Sicily for a beachside honeymoon. Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel is a stunning property for your stay with old-world charm dripping from its wallpapered halls and six-acre gardens. For an intimate escape focused on food, wine, and wellness, head to the hills and relax after your nuptials at the Monteverdi Tuscany . Located in the UNESCO World Heritage site Val d’Orcia, the hotel brings next-level fine dining to the medieval town. Any architecturally minded honeymooners heading to Capri might want to book a few nights at Punta Tragara . Designed by Le Corbusier, the interiors are as much of a draw as the beautiful ocean views. If you want to infuse your classic holiday with a modern touch, you might want to stay a while at Il Sereno , a Lake Como hotel designed with a refined, minimalist sensibility by Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola.

If you want a perfect blend of beaches and stunning wildlife, head to the African island nation of Mauritius. June and September are the sweet spot months to avoid the extreme heat of the summer and slightly cooler temperatures of the winter—although numbers during the months of July and August rarely dip below the 60s. National parks offer beautiful jungle excursions while the coastline is famed for its incredible beaches. Lux* Grand Baie is definitely a hot spot on the island for couples that don't mind balancing relaxing spa visits with dj sets by the pool. For a more restful retreat, book a stay at the Maradiva Villas Resort perched above Tamarin Bay. It’s important to note for LGBT+ honeymooners that while same-sex marriages are not legal in the country, the government has banned all discrimination against same-sex couples.

And Lanai is where couples can really get away from it all, but in the lap of luxury at one of two Four Seasons properties: the Four Seasons Resort Lanai , where nightly rates start at $2,033, or the adults-only Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort where honeymooners can focus on wellness and relaxation with nightly rates starting at $881.

Getting hitched is one of the best reasons to ditch work and undertake your longest, splurge-iest trip ever. But before you dive headfirst into checking off the items on your travel bucket list, take a few minutes to consider the practical stuff—because the trip of your dreams won’t just magically appear by itself.

In fact, lousy hotels, missed flights, lackluster meals and inhospitable weather can significantly hamper a happy holiday, essentially flushing your hard-earned money down the toilet. And while we can’t see the future, we can assure you that proper planning will undoubtedly put the odds in your favor of enjoying the getaway of your dreams.

Here's a handy guide to the best planning tips and advice for your honeymoon.

Timing is everything

You’ve dutifully set aside your collection of vacation days—now it’s time to work out how to spend them on your honeymoon. It’s important to weigh the time you’ve allotted for your adventure against your destination of choice, and make sure that your trip is spent traveling, not transiting.

With two or three weeks, you’ll have a more generous amount of time to take a crack at a faraway destination and overcome the exhaustion of a long-haul journey and/or jet lag. But a week-long holiday, say, is never well served by spending two full days hoofing it from one continent to another, only to turn around a few days later and repeat the grueling trek back.

Boats next to an idyllic beach backed by tree-lined cliffs in Thailand.

The other major timing consideration has to do with seasonality. Tacking your honeymoon on at the end of your already-set wedding date might preclude travel to certain destinations simply due to the time of year. Large areas of the Caribbean , for example, are prone to hurricanes during the months of September and October. Other destinations have annual monsoons—like Thailand , which has two different curtains of rains that sweep across the kingdom during the latter half of the year.

It’s best to educate yourself on the high and low seasons of your preferred honeymooning locales. Prices, of course, increase with a rise in demand during the months with the most favorable climate and during busy periods such as school holidays (when desirable hotels can also become scarce). Low seasons, on the other hand—or better yet, ’shoulder’ or ‘green’ seasons—can be a worthy option if you want to see more bang for your buck at the expense of rolling the dice weather-wise.

Benefits of DIY

When choosing a destination for your honeymoon, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with sticking to one place, but a protracted vacation—as many honeymoons are—lends itself well to exploring several locales. All-inclusive hotels are going to try to convince you otherwise, and travel agents will try to capitalize on your lack of destination knowledge with tours and templates.

However, a DIY trip is much easier than you might think, and the rewards are exponentially greater than signing up for a cookie-cutter tour. Hands-on planning is a crucial part of understanding a destination and you’ll arrive in the country with a commendable amount of acquired knowledge that will further guide you to sniff out the top experiences that really speak to you.

How to build a multi-stop honeymoon

As the architect of your own multi-stop trip, you might want to think of your honeymoon as a novel; the action on your vacation should swell and ebb accordingly. Think of the beginning of the trip as the initiation phase—you’re adjusting to a new world (maybe getting over jet lag) and want to ease into the action as it gradually builds. The middle section of the honeymoon is where the plot thickens. Your pulse quickens with adventure sports, or late urban nights exploring. Then, with the end of the story in sight, the last section of the holiday is when the jets cool—a denouement of sorts when you once again slow your pace.

It’s the beach in Bahia after Rio and São Paulo , the Amalfi villa at the end of Tuscany and Rome  or the ryokan in Hakone when you’re wrapping up Kyoto and Tokyo . You need a chance to unwind at the end of the trip, so you feel revitalized by the holiday, not desperately needing another.

Picking hotels

Now, with your storybook itinerary you’re going to have to slot in hotels. These should play out in tandem with the pace at each stage of your trip, but you need to slightly trick your future self. Every accommodation option selected should build upon the previous choice. The human mind can’t help but judge, and when you arrive at lodging number two you won’t be able to ignore the instinct to compare it to your accommodation the night before.

So, in order to essentially feel like you’re winning at travel, each hotel must get progressively better—or maintain the quality of the previous stay—culminating in your big splurge at the end, which nicely coincides with your itinerary’s finale. The last slice of the vacation is the happy ever after—just like you and your spouse after the wedding.

Honeymoon planning timeline

One year before honeymoon : Dream. Think about where you’ve always wanted to go to celebrate your marriage, and get inspired by guidebooks , magazines and websites.

Nine months before your honeymoon : If you’re budgeting your holiday in tandem with your wedding, you’ll likely know at this point what funds you’re hoping to allocate to your trip and can compare your budget against that dream list of destinations.

Six months before your honeymoon : Properly slot in your travel dates after calibrating for personal commitments and taking into account the optimal time–as you deem it–for visiting your destination of choice.

Four months before your honeymoon (or earlier) : Cement the foundations of your plans, scouting airplane tickets, booking must-have items on your checklist (hotels, visa, park permits) and firming up a version–in very broad strokes–of what your itinerary might look like (which days in which destination for multi-stop trips).

Two months before your wedding (note wedding, and not necessarily honeymoon) : If you’ve decided to ask your guests to help you fund your dream trip, now is the time to create an online registry detailing tangible activities to be undertaken at a gradation of price points to suit your wedding guests’ varying budgets.

One month before your honeymoon : The internet enables the world to move a million miles a minute, so once you begin the 30-day countdown you can take to your social platforms to snoop for upcoming events and trending bars, and even find friends that might be crisscrossing your itinerary.

Best honeymoons of 2023 & 2024

Seeking inspiration for your upcoming honeymoon? Our country specialists have pinpointed specific, of-the-moment destinations that, for a variety of reasons, contain the ingredients for a fulfilling trip. We believe what makes a honeymoon ― apart from superb places to stay (and we’ve recommended some of those, too) ― is the experiences.

We’re talking real one-off activities that you might never (or rarely) get the chance to repeat. This might be spending an afternoon as the sole couple on a secluded Fijian beach, witnessing the northern lights, or a candlelit dinner in the African bush.

Ravello, Amalfi Coast

By Italy specialist Taylor

When to go: mid-March to May or September to November

Sun-gilded hills where golden evenings seem to stretch for hours. Glorious food and wine. Opulent palazzos turned hotels. Storied cities packed with great artwork, past and present. Glamorous beaches lapped by turquoise waves and dotted with luxe villas. I’ve always imagined that Italy seems made for honeymoons.

Indeed, the national pursuit of la dolce vita — the sweet life — makes it the ideal honeymoon destination, no matter what you’re longing to do. You can pack your days with private tours and visits to monuments, if you like. However, you can also easily spend your whole trip emulating the locals by relaxing in the sun, sipping coffee at a cafe, drinking fine vintages, and indulging in some of the best food in Europe .

Where you go in Italy depends entirely on the sort of honeymoon you’re looking for. You might stick to the classic sights in Rome, Venice, and Florence, with a visit to the Amalfi Coast for relaxation and a chance to rub shoulders with the glitterati. For something more active, consider the Italian Lakes, where you can cycle, kayak , and boat in the Alpine splendor. Couples looking for exceptional wines and cuisine tend to gravitate to Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, but you might also consider Sicily . You can peruse our Italy honeymoon guide for more.

  • Try this: Take a cooking class with Laura , a nonna just outside Sorrento who will teach you how to make her family recipes. You’ll roll out pasta by hand, filet the day’s catch, and other classic Italian techniques, all while sipping on a glass of wine. Just the thing to start you own family cookbook.

Lion couple in the Serengeti, Tanzania

By Tanzania safari specialist Tom

When to go: anytime except mid-March to May

Glowing red and orange sunsets in wide, open skies, candlelit dinners beneath the stars and falling asleep under canvas to the sounds of the bush: a Tanzanian safari effortlessly delivers romance to any honeymoon.

That said, most camps and lodges love to acknowledge how important a honeymoon is and will go the extra mile to offer special touches for newlyweds. You might receive champagne on arrival, retire to your room to find rose petals scattered on the bed, or be offered a complimentary couples’ massage.

Best of all, your afternoon game drive might end with a surprise dinner set out just for you in the middle of the bush, lit up by the warm glow of lanterns.

The camp or lodge you stay at depends on your personal taste. If you’d prefer a more polished option, I suggest Sayari Camp in the northern Serengeti, whose huge tented suites (including the honeymoon suite) come with an egg-shaped bathtub overlooking the plains. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, stay at Lake Manze Camp in the heart of the Selous, where tents are more rustic and animals often roam past on their way to the lakeshore.

  • Try this: Follow up your time on safari with some beach relaxation in Zanzibar. Just a short flight from the mainland, the island’s tidal beaches are washed by the clear, warm waters of the Indian Ocean, which are ripe for snorkeling. You could also explore Stone Town’s fragrant spice markets and narrow alleys.

Male orangutan, Tanjung Puting National Park

By Lauren from our Indonesia team

When to go: April to October

Indonesia’s almost endless list of beach resorts and boutiques offer the secluded coves, spa treatments and champagne sunsets many honeymoons are made of. It’s also home to one of the least-explored areas of Southeast Asia — the jungles of Kalimantan, southern Borneo .

Here, thick jungle is broken only by the Sekonyer River. For some just-the-two-of-us seclusion, I suggest exploring the region on a klotok (a private, multi-story liveaboard), which can navigate the narrow waters that flow into Tanjung Puting National Park.

The park has one of the highest densities of wild orangutans in the world, so you stand a good chance of seeing one swing past as you have lunch on the top deck of your boat. Come evening, you might see them building a nest in the trees. But for me, the orangutans aren’t the only highlight here.

At nightfall, the top deck of your boat can be converted into an open-air bedroom (with a mosquito net and canopy). As you settle into bed, the surrounding trees begin to glow with thousands of fireflies, and on a clear night you can see the Milky Way stretched out above.

  • Try this: If you’re itching for some traditional honeymoon luxe after the simplicity of your cruise, fly on to Bali , where you can take your pick of beachside escapes — I like the villas and cottages at Belmond Jimbaran Puri, which have private gardens and sea views.

Scuba Diving, Fiji

By Fiji specialist Peter

When to go: May to October

Fiji has the icing-sugar sand and aquamarine seas synonymous with the South Pacific, but it also has its own unspoiled culture and some of the most genuinely welcoming people I’ve ever met. Everyone greets each other daily with an upbeat call of ‘Bula!’ (‘Hello!’)

This 18-day Fiji itinerary gives you an overview of this island state. However, I’d swap Port Denarau for the wide, soft sands of Natadola Beach ― a good place to snooze straight after a long flight.

From here you can take a jet-boat safari of the Sigatoka River, which transports you into Fiji’s verdurous interior. It’s a chance to visit authentic Fijian villages, meet their chiefs, and participate in a traditional welcome ceremony which involves drinking kava root out of a coconut shell.

Wherever you are in Fiji, if your visit coincides with a Sunday, head to your nearest church. Fijian hymn singing is something else ― it’s like waves of soaring a capella harmony washing over you.

Finish your trip on Matangi Island, a private island resort surrounded by luxuriant tropical vegetation. Here you stay in a luxe version of a traditional bure (thatched cabin). Snorkel in crystalline waters over well-preserved coral; learn Fijian basket weaving or take a cooking class; hike among the palms, almond trees, and mangroves; and spot birdlife ― everything from fruit doves to sacred kingfishers.

  • Try this: Being marooned, just the two of you, with a picnic on Matangi Island’s Horseshoe Bay. Formed from a sunken volcanic crater, you’ll be dropped off by boat to enjoy the bay’s utter seclusion for a whole afternoon.

Iguazu, Argentina

By Argentina specialist Liz

When to go: October to April

Argentina offers wide variety as a honeymoon destination: an energetic capital, wilderness, ice fields and natural spectacle. There are elements that lend themselves to romantic getaways, too ― such as estancia stays (see below).

Start in Buenos Aires . It’s a city of many guises: repository of Belle Epoque architecture, well-heeled and fast-paced fountain of eternal youth, gourmet trendsetter and living shrine to Eva Perón. You can explore it on a city tour, a tour of parrillas (traditional hole-in-the-wall restaurants) , and by watching tango in a milonga (a dance hall).

Then, leave urban Argentina behind and fly to southern Patagonia. The small town of El Calafate serves as your base for visiting the humongous Upsala and Perito Moreno glaciers. You can take boat trips to the glacier snouts or go ice-trekking on them. Continuing north to Bariloche in northern Patagonia, you enter a world of sprawling lakes and quiet woodlands. There’s great hiking here, or you take a drive along the scenic Road of the Seven Lakes.

To round off your trip, fly to Iguazú Falls . In the Belmond Hotel Das Cataratas on the Brazilian side you can lounge by the pool, the mist gently spooling down from the falls overhead. This hotel gives you early morning and evening hours access to the falls, so you can stroll the boardwalks in peace.

  • Try this: head into the countryside south of Buenos Aires to an estancia (traditional working ranch). Set off into the pampas on horseback and indulge in hearty Argentinian red wines.

Northern lights in Iceland

By Laura from our Iceland team

When to go: October to March

Starry skies might be romantic, but how about gazing up at ethereal ribbons of light shimmering across the inky blackness? Spend your honeymoon in Iceland and you have a good (though never guaranteed) chance of seeing the northern lights glow across the sky.

Iceland’s latitude means the northern lights could show wherever you are on the island during the winter months. And, with temperatures barely dropping below zero, it’s not as cold as you might think.

You could take a guided tour from Reykjavík, searching for the lights in the countryside surrounding the capital. But, my best experience of seeing the aurora was during my stay at Hotel Rangá. Situated on the south coast, the hotel has custom-made benches where you can sit out with a warm drink and watch the skies put on their display, as well as telescopes for stargazing. You can also arrange for a wake-up call should the northern lights appear during the night.

You’re close to some of Iceland’s largest volcanoes here, including Mount Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, the latter of which you can visit with a guide. Stroll the coast’s black-sand beaches or head to the Gjáin valley to see its waterfalls and pools.

We can start planning your Iceland trip from the end of October 2019. For more information visit https://www.audleytravel.com/us/iceland .

  • Try this: Take a 45-minute flight from Reykjavík to the north of Iceland, which sees fewer visitors than the south. Here, you could soak in the geothermal infinity pool at GeoSea, near the coastal town of Húsavík, after dark for a chance to see the northern lights closer to the Arctic Circle.

The Seychelles

Fairy tern chick on Denis Island

By Hidden Beaches specialist Hannah

When to go: March to May or September to November

With more than 100 islands scattered like jewels among the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles archipelago is the quintessential honeymoon destination , especially for those interested in marine life or birdwatching. Which of the many islands do you want to visit? That depends on what you want to do while you’re there — you can explore your options in our highlights guide .

The archipelago boasts still-thriving reefs that are home to a wide array of turtles as well as vast schools of tropical fish. Most are easy to reach either from the beach or by boat, with sites suitable for snorkeling and diving. For the best and brightest house reefs, I’d suggest staying on Denis Island, La Digue and Bird Island.

Bird Island is also good for birdwatchers. This tiny private island, just a 30-minute flight from Mahé, is home to Bird Island Lodge. This isn’t where you go for polished luxury, but a rustic resort that rests gently on the land — for example, there’s no artificial light after sundown, so as not to confound the birds and turtles. If you might enjoy that sort of castaway feel, then the lodge offers an exceptional base for exploring the island’s raw landscape and spotting the abundant birdlife.

While there, you might be able to add a variety of birds to your life list, including sooty terns, common noddies and the fairy terns. You may also see hawksbill and green turtles nesting on the beaches at certain times of the year.

  • Try this: You’ll fly in and out of Mahé, the largest island of the chain. A full-day guided tour of the island will let you understand Mahé’s natural and human history, with stops at a Hindu temple, the Botanical Gardens, a rum distillery and Morne Seychellois National Park.

Traditional houseboat cruise

By India specialist Sophie

When to go: November to March

There’s no set formula for a honeymoon in India , but for a combination of more traditional honeymoon relaxation and adventure, I suggest a few weeks exploring Kerala and Karnataka in South India.

If you’re looking for the sort of joyful chaos you might expect from India , I’d start in Mysore. Explore its Indo-Gothic palace ― especially striking when illuminated on Sunday evenings ― and delve into its spice, silk and food markets.

Then, travel on one of India’s toy trains to Coonoor to stay on a private tea estate. Looking out over neat rows of tea plaiting the hills gives you a breather after Mysore’s busyness. You can take tea tastings and walk through hamlets inhabited by the Toda tribe, who live in traditional dogles (bamboo and rattan huts).

Next, go to Nagarhole National Park to see wild elephants via boat and 4x4 tours — leopards, tigers and sloth bears also hide in the bamboo thickets, but you’re more likely to be shown their claw markings or tracks. You can then move on to Coorg, a verdant region of coffee plantations. You can visit a Tibetan community here (the only one in South India), Bylakuppe. Tour their monastery and try their momos.

For a relaxing finale, head to Neeleshwar for a stay in the thatched cottages of Neeleshwar Hermitage , located in gardens just off the nearby beach. You can even include a houseboat cruise on the Keralan backwaters as part of your stay.

  • Try this: A walking tour of Mysore’s food markets, sampling local delicacies such as Mysore pak, a sweet made with ground flour, sugar and ghee.

Fira, Santorini

By Greece specialist Brittany

When to go: May through September

With endless sun, whitewashed villages and piercingly blue waters, the Greek islands seem made for a honeymoon. I can’t imagine anything more romantic than watching the sun set over the glittering Aegean unless it’s diving off a sailboat into a tiny hidden cove, where you and your new spouse are the only swimmers.

The islands have a plethora of options to keep you busy. You might choose to visit some of Santorini’s wineries , where you’ll find ancient vines and rare vintages. Or, you can take a private catamaran tour through the gloriously clear waters — you can even visit the once-sacred island of Delos, legendary birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.

I suggest starting in Athens for a few days, then heading to Mykonos , which has the most luxurious hotels. Take a guided walking tour of the town in the morning and then you can explore on your own in the evenings. Then head to Santorini on the ferry where you can visit wineries and enjoy the glitz and glamour of the Cycladic villages on the caldera. Then, end your trip on quieter Milos, which boasts the best beaches in the Aegean.

  • Try this: While you’re on Milos, take a private sailboat tour of the island to see tiny, hidden inlets that you can only reach by water, many completely deserted. Kleftiko is only accessible by boat, boasting a white stone shoreline that’s riddled with sea caves and delicate arches.

One of the best ways to round out wedding planning is by taking a once-in-a-lifetime trip with your partner after it's all said and done. If you enjoy perks with stays, then perhaps the best route to consider. especially when booking a resort, is to explore their romance and honeymoon packages.

Romantic getaways for couples that combine a variety of experiences—including meals, upgrades and excursions—are considered packages as it's about setting the overall tone of the trip. For example, some hotels will offer a wellness package for two where couples can easily indulge in organic spa treatments, daily wellness rituals, and turndown services. Another may have a honeymoon package deal where newlyweds will be treated to an exclusive, sunset dinner for two, as well as a bucket-list excursion locally. Here, we review the best honeymoon packages for couples, especially those who want the five-star treatment (and chilled champagne upon arrival).

In this article:

What to Look for When Booking a Honeymoon Package

Caribbean honeymoon packages, central america and mexico honeymoon packages, europe honeymoon packages, south pacific, australia and new zealand honeymoon packages, south and southeast asia honeymoon packages, usa honeymoon packages.

A couple enjoying a romantic beachside dinner together.

Given your honeymoon will be one of the most outstanding trips you'll take as a couple, refining the destination and respective hotels or operators may be a tough decision. According to The Knot's 2022 Honeymoon Study, one-third of all couples stay at premium hotels, while a quarter seeks all-inclusive options. One in five specifically select luxury, five-star properties to accommodate their dream getaway. (For many, the honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime splurge.)

To get the most from a given resort or destination, couples will look for romance deals or specific honeymoon packages custom-tailored by each resort. These packages cater to the overall intimate experience sought by couples. The property may provide complimentary spa massages, a romantic beach dinner for two, or a private sunset boat ride. Some tour operators may include a private helicopter ride or boat transfers as part of its comprehensive package experience.

What else should you look for when booking a honeymoon package? "Budget is usually one of the first concerns. There are options for most price ranges, however, you need to be realistic. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for," advise Reco advisors Mike K. and Curtis R. "Other items to consider are travel times as some locations can require overnight flights which can be stressful after a wedding. Most of all, it's about finding the right resort for your desires. Friends and family will provide suggestions, but their likes may be different than yours."

With this in mind, it really is up to you to decide what you want to get out of your honeymoon and, more specifically, what you want out of your honeymoon package. If all you want is to fly and flop somewhere tropical, you might like the Caribbean, the South Pacific or Indonesia. If you'd prefer a destination that marries gorgeous scenery with adrenaline-pumping activities, try New Zealand, Iceland or Australia. And for something a bit closer to home (which also means saving pennies!), consider a US-based honeymoon in Florida.

Renaissance Island in Aruba

A short distance away from the East Coast of the US, it's no wonder Caribbean honeymoon packages are so high in demand. Between Aruba, Saint Lucia and Jamaica, it's a tough decision to select the ideal honeymoon package for you and your partner–they're all too good.

Saint Lucia Honeymoon Packages

There's a reason why St. Lucia honeymoon packages are so high in demand. The destination is arguably one of the most romantic in the Caribbean with the dramatic and otherworldly peaks of the Pitons. Resorts on the island also custom tailor experiences around romance, making it a sultry destination of choice for couples.

Jade Mountain : There are honeymooners galore at Jade Mountain, but you likely won't see them. Luckily, room service is terrific and efficient. The Total Romance offer is a honeymoon package where luxury meets adventure. Expect guided volcano tours, scuba diving lessons, jungle biking, a half-day yacht trip and a Swedish massage.

St. Barths Honeymoon Packages

Throughout the year, couples can take advantage of various offers or packages, including 10% off accommodations, as well as resort credits to be used for food and beverage options.

Xanadu Island Resort : Ambergris Caye is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in Belize and this package simply enhances the experience. Couples will receive a welcome drink upon arrival, as well as a welcome basket with local treats and wine. The experience also includes a romantic dinner for two al fresco, as well as a restaurant dinner on separate evening. Those looking for water activities will appreciate that this package comes with a half-day snorkeling excursion at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, as well as a private fishing and snorkeling trip that ends with the day's fresh catch enjoyed during a beach barbecue. A couple's massage will top off the experience. That's not all: round-trip flights from the international airport and transfers to Xanadu are included with this package.

Costa Rica Honeymoon Packages

One of the most biodiverse countries on Planet Earth is none other than the Land of Pura Vida. Adventure-seeking couples will find ease with Costa Rica honeymoon packages, which may couple a fun outdoorsy activity with a relaxing couples massage or yoga class.

The lodge sits atop a cliff, perched above the Pacific Ocean in Drake Bay, where jungle-immersed rooms are fit with air-conditioners and stunning interiors, along with a large balcony, hammock and plenty of monkey sightings. Opt for the Romance package when booking your stay for a bottle of wine or sparkling wine, chocolates and flowers on arrival and a couples massage.

Botánika Osa Peninsula : Situated between Corcovado National Park and the Pacific Ocean's Golfo Dulce, Hilton's Curio Collection eco-resort, Botánika Osa Peninsula, is an incredible ocean and rainforest paradise for couples. Its romance package includes massages for two, daily breakfast, dinner for two, as well as chilled champagne. Plus, couples can enjoy late check-out.

Cancún Honeymoon Packages

Along the Riviera Maya is the shining resort region of Cancún, where you can find just about every type of all-inclusive resort under the sun. Couples who want the full honeymoon experience, however, may want to venture slightly beyond Cancún to areas like Playa del Carmen and Tulum for more privacy and natural beauty.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba : Discerning honeymooners know developments along the Riviera Maya are completely distinct from nearby Cancún. This includes the Banayn Tree in the luxury development of Mayakoba. The property offers a " Sense of Romance " package, including a couple's massage a dinner for two at the recommended Thai restaurant Saffron, an "intimate moment" arranged by the concierge (a popular choice among couples is the in-villa outdoor bath), sparkling wine upon arrival, and daily breakfast for two.

Secrets Impression Moxché Playa del Carmen : At Secrets Impression Moxché, couples can enjoy an uninterrupted Newlywed and Anniversary Package that includes the following: fresh fruit, sparkling wine, turndown services with a special touch, breakfast in bed, and 15% off all spa treatments if that's your priority.

Los Cabos Honeymoon Packages

The southernmost region of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, located along the Pacific Coast, is considered one of the top destinations for travel from the West Coast of the US. Residents who live in LA or Texas can easily reach Cabo in less than a few hours. However, venture just a bit further to lesser-known Todos Santos and you'll find even better romance offerings that feel a bit more private.

Rancho Pescadero : An adults-only property in Todos Santos centered on mindfulness and natural beauty, the Rancho Pescadero offers a "Joy of Living Well" package. (Enough said.) This deal takes a rest and relaxation approach, including a massage or treatment at the Botánica Spa, followed by a farm-to-table lunch for two at the restaurant on-site. There's also an apothecary component where couples can build their own bouquet or create their own essential oil blends.

Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort: Couples escaping to Cabo will appreciate the "Here's to the Honeymooners" package from this particular adults-only property. Newlyweds who book a stay of five or more nights will enjoy special decorations in their room upon arrival, as well as chilled sparkling wine. Early check-in and late check-out, as well as the possibility of room upgrades are also teased as part of the package. Plus, couples can repeat the experience with a free night stay on their first anniversary.

A sunny day on the island of Santorini in Greece.

Imagine fields of provincial lavender, pure blue water against Cycladic Islands, and mounds of freshly-rolled pasta preluding an afternoon of boating along the Mediterranean. It's no surprise that couples adore an international getaway, especially when European honeymoon packages are involved.

France Honeymoon Packages

If you're looking for the Emily in Paris experience (sans the drama of the show), consider exploring France honeymoon packages along the French Riviera or the Normandy region. Considering the country is home to the world's finest gastronomy and wine, all you have to do is say "oui" to France.

Hôtel Plaza Athénée : Since 1913, the Hôtel Plaza Athénée has been the poster child for all things luxury and the epitome of Parisian chic. Here, rooms come dressed in rich silks, damask, rare woods and velvet—many with unparalleled views of the Eiffel Tower. Naturally, at a hotel so fine and in a city so well known for food, it's fitting that chef Alain Ducasse would oversee all of the hotel's food and beverage operations. The Romantic Offer package comes with a bottle of champagne and chocolates upon arrival, American breakfast for two, and access to the sauna and hammam in the Dior Spa.

Greece Honeymoon Packages

The white-washed walls and blue rooftops of Santorini and the otherworldly feeling of shipwrecked Zakynthos are just a few of the sightseeing opportunities for couples who want an Aegean getaway. Some Greece honeymoon packages are tailored to romance and aquatic adventure.

Abaton Island Resort & Spa : While most flock to the Cyclades when they head to Greece, why not stray from the crowd and visit the country's largest island instead? Abaton Island Resort & Spa is a quick 20-minute transfer from Crete's airport and its honeymoon suite—with a private pool, jacuzzi and sea views—is primed for a relaxing stay. Dinner and breakfast are included with the hotel's half-board option.

Andronis Feretti : The Andronis portfolio's unique package for its private yacht experience includes a half-day cruise around Santorini led by the captain of the boat and a crew member. Couples can enjoy refreshments and local wine, as well as other divine delicacies known to Greece. Lunch is served on board too. Plus, you'll head back to your suite after an enchanting day of sailing around the Aegean.

Iceland Honeymoon Packages

Drama is the word that comes to mind when considering Iceland honeymoon packages. Couples who dare to venture to the Nordic Island will be delighted by the landscape offerings across land, sea and sky. Naturally, an Icelandic experience should include a visit (or several) to a thermal spa, coupled with an outing to the Golden Circle. Pending priority, some iceland honeymoon packages may include a visit to the Tectonic Plates or involve a Northern Lights viewing experience.

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland : The 62-suite hotel offers direct access to the Blue Lagoon, arguably one of the highest-visited tourist destinations in Iceland. Couples, however, will enjoy their own private section of the lagoon's healing thermal waters and access to its beloved clay masks. The "Romantic Getaway" package includes accommodations, welcome drinks, daily breakfast for two, welcome gifts, daily group yoga sessions, a four-course dinner at the Lava Restaraunt, and a seven-course tasting menu for two at the acclaimed Moss Restaurant. In addition, couples can choose between various treatments at the spa, while having unlimited access to the Retreat Spa, Retreat Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon–skincare amenities, included. Now how's that for an all-encompassing Iceland honeymoon package?

Italy Honeymoon Packages

Arguably one of the top global destinations for any form of romance (and carb consumption) is the Land of La Dolce Vita. While Italy honeymoon packages are a bit pricier than other international offerings, the country is known for its wellness amenities and focus on cultural exploration.

Preidlhof: The wellness resort in northern Italy has rejuvenation and romance on its radar with its very own Honeymoon & Wedding Anniversary Package. Couples can rest easy knowing Preidlhof is all-inclusive with fresh fare offered each day to guests. Package offerings include a specially-decorated suite upon arrival, welcome drinks, a designated "romance table" for dining, treatments for two at the spa, and one trip out to the local region in the resort's Fiat 500 for the true Italian experience.

A scenic view of the mountainside in Bora Bora, part of French Polynesia.

Venturing far and Down Under, the South Pacific, Autralia and New Zealand are known for attracting adventurous honeymooners who dare to explore. The South Pacific contains some of the best honeymoon destinations, including Fiji and Tahiti. It's made up of clusters of intimate resorts, small peaceful villages and miles of quiet pristine beaches where honeymooners can post up in some seriously dreamy digs. The best time to travel to Fiji and French Polynesia is during the high season months of June to September, but New Zealand and Australia are best visited between December and March to catch the warm weather . Pending location, packages may include watersports or mountaintop excursions. Beauty is guaranteed no matter where you land.

Australia Honeymoon Packages

An aerial view of Sydney Harbor in Australia.

Head to the likes of Fiji or French Polynesia for overwater bungalows, or to New Zealand and Australia for a honeymoon immersed in nature. The following New Zealand and Australia honeymoon packages may spark multiple return visits.

Qualia : Known as one of the world's best resorts, you can't go wrong with a stay at Australia's qualia hotel. Sitting on 30 acres of native gardens, the hotel can be found on the northernmost tip of Hamilton Island and is the perfect base to explore the Great Barrier Reef. For your honeymoon, may we suggest the Heart Island Adventure package? This includes a four-night stay, a helicopter tour over the Great Barrier Reef and landing on Heart Island's helipad to spend some time snorkeling around the reef. Talk about a memory-maker.

Longitude 131˚ : For an all-inclusive honeymoon package that's as adventurous as it is scenic, opt for a stay at Longitude 131˚. Here, you can stay in one of the luxury tented domes or pavilion, each with bucket-list views of Australia's famed Uluru. Honeymooners should pick the Classic Uluru package for spa treatment credits and a guided walk to Uluru's base on top of your meals and drinks.

New Zealand Honeymoon Packages

Huka Lodge : After a luxury New Zealand honeymoon package? Look no further. Huka Lodge, nestled near the banks of the Waikato River in New Zealand's North Island, has just 20 guest suites (so you're bound to get some much-wanted privacy). The honeymoon package includes two nights, an hour-long couples spa treatment, flowers and chocolates on arrival, five-course evening meals in a private dining location as well as a full country breakfast.

Hapuku Lodge + Treehouses : Located above a deer farm in the South Island of New Zealand, Hapuku Lodge sits at the foot of the Kaikoura Seaward Mountain Range. A stay in one of its treehouses is such a unique honeymoon idea. Each treehouse has large windows that look across the canopy—best seen while relaxing in one of the deep-soak tubs. The honeymoon package includes three nights in one of the treehouses, a bottle of French champagne, organic chocolate, a three-course dinner each night (with a five-course, wine-paired dinner one night!) and a massage for each of the newlyweds. Sign us up.

Fiji Honeymoon Packages

Likuliku Lagoon Resort : No trip to Fiji is complete without a stay in one of its overwater bungalows (or as they say in Fiji, bures ). Likuliku Lagoon Resort's Celebration package is ideal for honeymoons as it includes an hour-long couples massage and a bottle of sparkling wine when you book a five-night stay. The room price includes all meals, bottled water and use of non-motorized water sports—but you'll likely spend most of your time here diving off your private deck into the crystalline waters, which are that dreamy!

Yasawa Island Resort & Spa : Located in the sunniest and driest part of Fiji, Yasawa Island Resort & Spa is the only resort on Yasawa Island—which means guests here have 10 private beaches all to themselves. The all-inclusive resort boasts just 18 luxury bure suites and the honeymoon bure is hidden at the end of a deserted white beach with a horizon pool. The price includes half-day trips to the famed Blue Lagoon Caves as well as guided snorkeling trips.

French Polynesia Honeymoon Packages

Bora Bora honeymoon packages are highly-desired with airline partners often partnering with resorts to help ease the burden of long-haul travel from the US.

Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts : With the island of Taha'a on one side, Bora Bora on the other and crystal-clear Tahitian waters all around, a stay in one of this resort's overwater bungalows is the perfect romantic honeymoon spot. You can choose a half-board package here—we recommend the spa offer for daily breakfast and one traditional Taurumi Polynesian massage per person

A woman swims through the crystal clear water of the Maldives.

There's so much to enjoy across Southeast Asia, especially for honeymooners seeking pristine beaches and culture. These regions provide the perfect combination of beauty, beaches and culture all in one romantic getaway. It's here that you'll find overwater bungalows galore (we're looking at you, Maldives). These bungalows are often perched above pristine waters, where honeymooners laze the day away on their daybed and take dips in the ocean via their private deck.

Maldives Honeymoon Packages

Thatched-roof, overwater bungalows with glass floors and utmost privacy are what most couples imagine when considering a Maldivian getaway. Most, however, walk away with far greater of an experience, especially if Maldives honeymoon packages are properly arranged well in advance.

Jumeirah Maldives Olhahali Island : To get to the Maldives, most couples from the US will have to experience a layover or two (often a prerequisite before landing at a fine destination worth visiting). Jumeirah is offering its dual-trip stopover package, which includes a two-night stay at the iconic Burj Al Arab in Dubai. Couples can get situated in the lap of luxury before flying to the Maldives, where they'll then enjoy four nights at the new Jumeirah property on Olhahali Island.

The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island : Arguably one of the most well-known properties in the region, the Conrad Maldives is located right along the South Ari Atoll. With 12 restaurants and bars, including the all-glass undersea restaurant Ithaa, as well as two spas, couples can find their ultimate honeymoon bliss. Specific packages for honeymooners are reserved, including private jet ski outings and more arranged by the concierge team. Inquire upon booking.

Huvafen Fushi Maldives : If you prefer your bungalow to come with its own private plunge pool, you're looking in the right place. At Huvafen Fushi Maldives, it feels as if it's just you, your new spouse and the fish (you'll see them via the glass floor in the Ocean Bungalow rooms). Honeymooners love the underwater spa, and a 60-minute treatment comes included in the resort's Romance package, which also includes a bottle of champagne and chocolate-dipped fruits on arrival, daily breakfast (and one floating breakfast), a private four-course candlelit dinner and complimentary snorkeling equipment.

The sun rises over Makena Beach in Maui, Hawai'i.

Honeymooning stateside can be totally romantic. Be it a northern lights camp, a lush resort or a private island hotel, there are loads of options and vast lands to explore in the United States. Florida, a beach-lover's favorite, offers oceanside cottages that feel as if you've been transported to the South Pacific. And of course, there's Hawaii: a cluster of islands that's practically synonymous with jet-setting honeymoons—complete with fragrant floral leis, tropical mai tais, hula dancing, and some of the finest US honeymoon packages. Those who want more of an active, outdoorsy honeymoon should look north to Alaska for breathtakingly beautiful scenery. According to The Knot Honeymoon Study, approximately half of all couples in 2022 chose to honeymoon in the US. Considering the breadth of experiences and options available to newlyweds, it's a fair choice.

Alaska Honeymoon Packages

A view of the northern lights in Denali National Park, Alaska.

If the Northern Lights, wildlife sightings and fresh seafood are among your bucket-list items for the honeymoon, then an Alaska honeymoon package will serve you well.

Borealis Basecamp : Just 25 miles from Fairbanks, Alaska, Borealis Basecamp sits on 100 acres of boreal forest—but the real draw here is its clear-topped domes where honeymooners can watch the northern lights dance above them while snuggled up in bed. There are various autumn and winter packages available and, depending on which one you choose, activities such as an Alaskan dog sledding tour and meeting reindeer.

Stillpoint Lodge : At the foot of Kachemak Bay State Park, get lost in the remarkable Alaskan wilderness with a stay at Stillpoint Lodge. There are several packages to choose from here—we like the look of the Adventure package or the Nature & Nurture package for your honeymoon. Each package includes organic meals, one spa treatment per person and various activities like brown bear watching and guided eco-tours.

Florida Honeymoon Packages

A gorgeous aerial view of Clearwater Beach, Florida.

The peninsula is home to some of the most luxe resorts in the US, which means Florida honeymoon packages offer romance and amenities.

The Faena Hotel Miami Beach : The five-star property with prime beach access in Miami oozes romance. The Faena's "Suite Dreams" package includes two complimentary treatments at the spa, daily breakfast for two at the Poolside Veranda, a $200 resort credit, butler service for only certain suite tiers, early check-in and late check-out, complimentary valet parking, a welcome amenity, and a complimentary rollaway bed or crib (in case a little one is involved). Oh–and did we mention the suites are, indeed, a dream?

Little Palm Island Resort & Spa : This honeymoon resort may be located in Little Torch Key, Florida, but it feels more like the South Pacific. Accessible only by boat or seaplane, this oasis is plopped on a 5.5-acre private reserve and allows no more than 60 guests at one time. Here, thatched-roof private bungalows come equipped with private verandas, outdoor showers and beds draped in gauzy butterfly netting—but they're void of phones and television. The Culinary Paradise package will delight foodies with its welcome bottle of champagne, daily breakfast, three-course lunch, four-course dinner and $100 spa credit per person, per day.

Hawaii Honeymoon Packages

The sun sets over Wailea in Hawai'i.

Hawaii honeymoon packages are a must-consider for couples who want to indulge in all that the Aloha State has to offer. Between Maui's world-class resorts and Kauai's adventure offerings, there's no need to secure a visa when honeymooning in this domestic paradise.

The Westin Maui: Nestled right along a prime oceanfront area of Ka'anapali Beach, the resort's "Love Travels" package comes with accommodations in the renovated Hokupa'a luxury tower, which gives couples immediate access to the Lanai lounge. There, romance awaits with a private bar, plunge pool, daily breakfast and evening cocktails and demonstrations. The package also includes a signature couple's massage and dinner at the acclaimed restaurant Waicoco.

Koʻa Kea Resort on Poipu Beach : Poipu Beach is where the honeymooners flock for romance and gently lapping waves that crest on golden sand. Koʻa Kea's " Master of Moons " package is custom-tailored per couple as honeymoons have evolved into familymoons, bestiemoons and more. Booking include romantic experiences like candlelit dinners, sunset cruises, oceanfront massages at the spa, as well as horseback riding along the Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail. Depending on the level of your package, you can also request a honeymoon photoshoot to document the gorgeous experience.

Las Vegas Honeymoon Packages

Foodies and nightlife-adoring couples who like variety will appreciate Las Vegas honeymoon packages. Consider the casinos and entertainment options as added amenities, though the F&B credits will especially do the trick.

The Venetian Resort: One of the higher-end properties in Sin City easily offers romance at every turn, especially with its views of Vegas, as well as its fine dining scene. Costco's package for suites , however, is one that should be seriously considered among couples who desire daily food and beverage credits, as well as complimentary parking.

How to save money on your honeymoon

Before finalizing your honeymoon plans , here are additional money-saving tips to consider. From setting your budget to researching all-inclusive packages , these suggestions will help you make the most out of your trip.

1. Create a budget—and stick to it

First, sit down with your partner and set a honeymoon budget you’re both comfortable with. Ask yourselves, “What are your priorities?” Would you rather splurge on a fancy resort? Activities? Maybe you both don’t mind spending money on an overseas flight if the country you’re going to has affordable housing and free excursions. Once you’ve established your budget, commit to it throughout your trip.

2. Book your flights and hotel early

Trust us: Don’t wait until the last minute to book your flights or travel accommodations. We recommend planning your trip six to eight months in advance. That way, you’ll have enough time to research deals and find flights within your budget. You’ll also have a greater selection of rooms and options for hotels, resorts, and Airbnbs (especially if you travel during the busy season).

3. Travel during off-seasons

If you want to visit a popular destination, consider traveling during the off-season when crowds are minimal and prices are lower. However, you’ll want to ensure the weather is still good. For example, avoid going to the Caribbean in August and September because of peak hurricane season. Similarly, spring may not be the best time to visit Yellowstone because many parks are closed then.

4. Look at all-inclusive options

Booking an all-inclusive honeymoon is a smart way to take a vacation without surprise fees or extra expenses. Besides your accommodation, the packages typically include food, entertainment, and activities. Cruises are a popular all-inclusive option for honeymooners. But if you’d rather not travel by ship, there are all-inclusive honeymoon resorts available in most destinations. Bonus: Zola has cruise gift cards to help you raise funds for the big trip.

5. Use Zola’s honeymoon fund

Instead of using your wedding registry for new cookware, consider asking your guests to contribute to your honeymoon! Zola’s honeymoon and cash funds make it easy for your friends and family to give you money for your trip and specific experiences, including round-trip airfare, dinner for two, and activities like watersports or horseback riding.

Looking for one more big idea? Saving money on your big day can help shave a bit off your budget to put towards a honeymoon. From cutting overall wedding costs to planning a wedding on a budget , Zola has expert tips on where to think creatively so you can invest in your dream honeymoon.

The Hawaiian island of Maui attracts throngs of newlyweds each year thanks to its dramatic landscape, which features lush forests, beautiful beaches and dormant volcanoes. There are a wide variety of shorelines to explore here, including the wild Polihale State Park and the relaxing Po'ipu Beach. It's important to know that if you visit during winter, you'll hit Kaua'i's rainiest season and many of the island's beaches won't be safe for swimming. Capri's incredible setting will no doubt sweep honeymooners off their feet. The Italian island's stunning cliffs frame its beaches, making for an unforgettable spot to wade through the water or enjoy a meal at a beachfront restaurant. Keep in mind, because of its rugged topography, Capri's beaches are made up of pebbles and rocks rather than sand. The top free beaches visitors should check out include Marina Grande and Marina Piccola. However, for the full Capri experience, travelers should splurge for access to a world-renowned beach club like La Fontelina to enjoy chair rentals, top-notch seaside cuisine and Instagram-worthy shorelines.

honeymoon travel ideas

For a unique (and surprisingly cheap ) Caribbean experience, head to Martinique, an overseas region of France. Alongside quintessentially idyllic Caribbean beaches, you'll notice that residents speak French and use the euro. Specific beaches you'll want to check out include beautiful Les Salines beach and quiet Anse Mabouya.

honeymoon travel ideas

A vacation along Italy's Amalfi Coast is a dream for many honeymooners thanks to its spectacular beauty and excellent dining scene. Although the beaches in the Amalfi Coast region are smaller and more pebbly than those found in other popular honeymoon destinations, the scenery from the many cliffside towns more than makes up for the petite shorelines. For unforgettable Amalfi Coast views, hit up Positano's Marina Grande Beach or the secluded Fiordo di Furore. Since many of the area's beaches are only accessible via rigorous stairways, book a table at a Michelin-starred Italian restaurant to indulge and refuel.

12 Affordable Honeymoon Destinations That Inspire Romance Without Breaking the Bank

Because love shouldn't cost a thing.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

honeymoon travel ideas

Your honeymoon should be an opportunity to decompress after months of wedding planning . In reality, however, doling out a small fortune for your first vacation as a married couple — after spending a pretty penny on the wedding itself — can be just as stressful.

According to a study by The Knot , newlyweds dropped an average of $5,100 on the trip in 2022 (after spending tens of thousands on the wedding, in most cases). So it would be understandable for couples to feel hesitant about booking the dreamy multi-country European tour or lavish overwater villa they've always dreamed of. But fret not, frugal lovebirds — there are plenty of luxurious honeymoon destinations, even for couples on a budget.

Booking a honeymoon on Oahu rather than Maui or Kauai, for instance, can deliver a classic Hawaiian experience for less. As another example, if you love Spain but don't want to pay Spain prices, neighboring Portugal is a little more affordable. Traveling during a destination's off-season means cheaper lodging (and fewer people), while tracking flights on Hopper will ensure you buy tickets when prices are at their lowest.

Ready to celebrate a lifetime together somewhere spectacular? Here are 12 cheap honeymoon destinations on our radar.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Honeymooners love Belize, a gorgeous slice of Central America that serves up idyllic beaches with a side of tropical forest. Belize City, the nation's largest urban area, is perfect for active couples. You can go kayaking or snorkeling and visit the nearby Mayan sites Xunantunich and Cahal Pech or the jaguar preserve at Cockscomb Basin .

Belize is also home to many resorts that offer all-inclusive packages — such as Chaa Creek and Belizean Dreams — which help couples save money on food and drinks. Though not all-inclusive, Xanadu Island Resort on Ambergris Caye, overlooking the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea, offers an array of complimentary activities, such as kayaking, bird-watching, paddleboarding, and bicycle rentals.

Key Largo, Florida

If you're looking for somewhere warm to spend your honeymoon that doesn't require an international flight, head to Key Largo (you can even reach this Florida destination by road ). The long, skinny piece of land in the upper Florida Keys has plenty of beach and water sports from snorkeling to paddleboarding. It's also a 45-minute drive from Everglades National Park , where you can try to spot the park's resident manatees and crocodiles.

Book your honeymoon adventure at the Baker's Cay Resort Key Largo, Curio Collection by Hilton , which stretches along the scenic Florida Bay, or check out the highly rated Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection , which has an ocean-view pool and a private beach area.

If you want to get out of the U.S., but don't want to travel far, Bermuda is the perfect destination. Flights from NYC are just over two hours long, and upon arrival, you'll be greeted by the island's famous pink-sand beaches and turquoise waters.

Stay at The Reefs Resort and Club , which has three restaurants and bars, two tennis courts, and complimentary kayaks and snorkel gear. Up the ante with the resort's romance package, which includes an ocean view room for four nights, a welcome cocktail, four gourmet dinners (one on the beach), a 60-minute couple's massage, and champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries upon arrival.

On the other side of the island, you'll find Rosewood Bermuda , a property with multiple restaurants and lounges and an unbeatable location on the coastline of Castle Harbour. With plenty of free or affordable things to do in Bermuda, like walking the Royal Naval Dockyard or visiting the Unfinished Church, couples don't have to feel guilty splurging a little bit on their accommodations.

Jamaica is the land of good vibes, mountains, rain forest, and beautiful beaches — but budget-conscious honeymooners will also appreciate the typically affordable flights to the island and the low cost of living. Save money by exploring the island on your own and hanging on the beach (which, let's be honest, never gets old), so you can splurge on accommodations at the GoldenEye resort, where Ian Fleming wrote all 14 James Bond novels. Today, the property is a honeymooning couple's dream, with a lagoon, secluded beaches, and stand-alone villas, cottages, and beach huts.

The island is also home to plenty of all-inclusive resorts , where you can pay upfront, then enjoy your honeymoon without stressing about that second round of drinks or late-night room service order. For the ultimate all-inclusive experience, check out the Azul Beach Resort Negril or one of the island's seven adults-only Sandals .

Napa and Sonoma, California

There's no lack of luxury in California's Napa and Sonoma valleys, but you can keep the costs down by experiencing it on your own terms. Kick the celebration off with a flight of sparkling wine at Domaine Carneros winery, a French chateau-inspired spot with beautiful formal gardens perfect for photo ops.

Stay at the Carneros Resort and Spa , where you can book a luxury suite or retreat from the world in a spacious cottage. With delicious food options on-site and an extensive spa, you'll never have to leave the compound. But it's worth venturing out for a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train to take in the sights with lunch and wine included. Compare tour options for the best price.

Head to the Sonoma Plaza for a quaint shopping experience at local boutiques and to check out a Spanish-style mission. Save a few bucks by bringing your own wine, cheese, and blanket for a romantic moment in the park on the square, or indulge in a French meal on the rustic outdoor patio at The Girl & the Fig .

Flights from the U.S. to Mexico are generally short and inexpensive even though the sunny destination feels a world away. The country continues to lure American honeymooners with its endless beaches, Mayan ruins, high quality of life, and low prices.

Head to Tulum , on Mexico's Riviera Maya, for a honeymoon that offers both relaxation (hello, Caribbean waters!) and adventure. Make sure you spend at least a couple days exploring the area's Mayan ruins: the Playa Ruinas in Tulum and Chichén Itzá two hours northwest. Stay at the boutique Jashita Hotel , a white-sand oasis that beckons you to relax on the beachfront lounge chairs with a cocktail in hand. You can book one of its oceanfront honeymoon suites and pass the time at the rooftop bar and adults-only infinity pool.

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

Offering less expensive alternatives to Thailand's famous tourist destinations, Vietnam has a little something for every kind of honeymooner. Like to hike? Visit the Valley of Love in Dalat or enjoy scenic views of the Muong Hoa Valley or Fansipan mountain in Sapa. Looking for a honeymoon filled with food and culture? Book a stay at the luxurious Sofitel Legend Metropole in Hanoi, an oasis in the center of a buzzing city.

Honeymooners interested in beaches, spa treatments, and relaxation can head to Côn Đảo, an archipelago off the coast that makes an affordable honeymoon filled with white-sand beaches and scenic trails possible. Check out Côn Đảo's Six Senses resort, which is also a protected national and marine park with plenty of beachfront.

Honolulu, Hawaii

If Hawaii tops your honeymoon list but doesn't seem feasible when it comes to cost, consider bustling Honolulu on the island of Oahu. It's a city that sits practically on the sand, providing access to the stunning (and wonderfully surfable) coast of Waikiki Beach; you can rent a board from Moku , just a block from the beach, for $30 a day (less if you keep it longer than three days). Or hop on one of the city's easy-to-use Biki bicycles to cruise the canals and coastline.

As you'd imagine, the city has hotels that fit various budgets. Honeymooners looking for direct beach access will love the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort , while those looking for a refined, modern hotel should check out the 'Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach across the street from the sand. An upscale stay can be found at the five-star Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach . You might be able to justify the extra cost by cooking meals in the in-room kitchenettes instead of dining out.

Costa Rica may be known for its lush rain forests and diverse wildlife, but the country also delivers a honeymoon-perfect beach vacation. Book your own house, condo, or studio in the coastal towns of Playa Pelada or Playa Guiones (near Nosara) through Rent Nosara . Or check out the adults-only Hotel Makanda by the Sea , which has suites and villas with ocean views and an on-site restaurant.

When you're ready to explore beyond the beach, take a yoga class in Nosara, book a zip-lining adventure, or visit Manuel Antonio National Park near Hotel Makanda.

Portugal is often overshadowed by the popular honeymoon destination on its border (Spain, of course), but it has the warm weather, beaches, and culture many couples are looking for at a fraction of the price.

For an easy, accessible trip, head to Lisbon, where you can spend your days exploring the city on foot (or by tram) in search of the city's best pastel de nata , a Portuguese egg custard tart. Stay at The One Palácio da Anunciada and book a romantic dinner at Belcanto , the first restaurant in Lisbon to earn two Michelin stars.

If you've got it in your budget for a second flight, head to the Azores islands off the coast to try your luck at spotting whales and dolphins aboard the Moby Dick .

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada

Just across the Canadian border and about half an hour from the hustle and bustle of Niagara Falls is the quaint Niagara-on-the-Lake. Nicknamed "The Loveliest Town in Canada," it truly lives up to the hype. With a plethora of outdoor cafes and independent shops housed in colonial-style buildings, this small town is the perfect spot for a romantic stroll. It's also nestled in the heart of Canadian wine country, where you can sample ice wine and wines made from local produce like peaches.

Spend an afternoon tasting at Peller Estates followed by a romantic dinner for two among the grapes. Stay at the town's landmark hotel, Prince of Wales , a Victorian-style property that boasts an award-winning restaurant, an elegant tea room, and a full-service spa with an indoor saltwater pool.

Flights to Guatemala tend to be affordable, and once you're there, the low cost of living will keep your wallet happily padded. Prices for dining, activities, and luxe hotels are a fraction of what you'd pay in the U.S. All that aside, the country is home to volcanos, ancient Mayan sites, and lush rain forests, so there's plenty to see and do.

For a remote and romantic trip, book a stay at La Casa del Mundo on Lake Atitlan, a hotel built into the cliffs that's only accessible by foot or boat and has stunning volcano views — all for an affordable price. From La Casa del Mundo, you can hike around the lake to neighboring villages, book a boat tour, or take a day trip to the bustling Chichicastenango Market to pick up a couple of treasures to bring home.
